How can I improve the V10 MPG?

  • Add to quote

Any suggestions from the group? I get 11-12 on the road, but thought I'd ask if anyone has tried some mods to improve mpg.

11-12 on the road? Yikes!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/depressed.gif I afraid don't have any suggestions for you. Are your numbers from the console computer or done by hand? Is your truck 4X2 or 4X4? 3.73 or 4.30 axle? What kind of tires? how much AC (including defroster)? My brother has a stock Y2K F250 XLT CCSB 4X2 V10 AT 3.73 with Michelin LTX M/S tires, and he gets 15~16 on the road with up to 5 people and a pile of bikes and luggage on board. He managed ~13.7 last summer with that load and towing a 3,250 lb trailer from the DC area out to Montana and back @ 65 MPH (his V10 + 3.73 did a tad better than my V8 + 4.10!). Here's a link to my trip report. 11-12 just doesn't sound right... HTH, crewzer

Free flowing exhaust, bed cover, 255/85R16 tires, raise tire pressure, rpms below 2000, easy driving.

2000 excursion v10 mpg

Tire pressure up. Performance air filter. skinny tires are better for fuel MPGs. take it easy with the go pedal. I think anything around 12 MPGs is doing good. twinbulls

What he said!

Sell it and buy a diesel. I get 11.4 uphill, downhill, off a cliff, idling. Under 2000rpm's don't work with 4.30's. Exhaust didn't work either. Long story short, they don't get good gas milage. That's why I bought it, to make the environmentalists mad/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif!

Check my sig. I still only get around 12. Maybe 13 if I'm lucky (downhill in neutral with a tailwind). Still goes like hell though 0-60 in 7.0 and the quarter in 15 at 92. And I drive like I'm running the drag strip most of the time as well, so I guess that probably doesn't help me.

I'm sorry, and I don't mean to offend anyone, but, I can't friggin believe any of you bought the V10 and even have a care in the world about the gas mileage. Mileage is not what this truck is about. I just don't understand... Ok, go ahead, flame on... Rev

Amen Reveye!!!!!!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

So it seems that some of us go the "other way". We look for mods and ideas to increase fuel mileage. Hell, any dope can buy a tuner, slap it in his PSD, call himself the "Mod Master" and flick boogers at us gassers BUT what really turns heads is when someone like the guy above or any one of us, finds out how to get a solid 18MPG average out of our V10s! So, maybe it's not so much about "caring" about mileage as it is the challenge to find a mod or combination thereof that will take us farther on a tank of dead dino! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I agree with you Monsta. Nothing wrong with modding in that direction. It just seems that most people I see on this site that are talking about gas mileage on their 10's, are whining or complaining about 1 or 2 miles per gallon. 1 or 2 miles per gallon doesn't seem like modding to me. Sorry if this hits people the wrong way. I just knew, plain and simple, when I ordered this truck, that it was built to do what I wanted it to do when I mashed on that throttle and if I wanted mpg's, I should've bought a Kia... Rev

[/ QUOTE ] Very good post... one of the best opinions I've seen in some time!!!

If you guys figure it out, you let me know, but the V10 is a pig, almost as bad as the 460 w/o as much power.

I have a diesel F350, 99 and I dont get much better,, I often see as low as 13 around town, and Diesel fuel is more expensive than regualar around here so the difference in price almost equals the price.. I have done a ton mods and upgrades and to be honest,, I would trade a identical V-10 for mine.. I cant stand the noise and I don't tow anything large enough to warrant the torque

[ QUOTE ] Hell, any dope can buy a tuner, slap it in his PSD, call himself the "Mod Master" and flick boogers at us gassers BUT what really turns heads is when someone like the guy above or any one of us, finds out how to get a solid 18MPG average out of our V10s! [/ QUOTE ] Why waste a good booger? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif Seriously, I doubt claims of 18mpg on a V-10 as much as some of the claims on the PSD. I'm not flaming, just questioning the process of checking, as well as if it's repeatable.

[ QUOTE ] If you guys figure it out, you let me know, but the V10 is a pig, almost as bad as the 460 w/o as much power. [/ QUOTE ] I'll dispute that. I put a fully loaded E-350 U-haul w/ v-10 up against my dad's f-350 dually w/ 460 going up Vail and Loveland passes when I helped him move from Las Vegas to Denver. Both vehicles were loaded approximately equally (dad was towing his 65 cutlass). The 460 was screaming in first on the way up. The v-10 loafed up both hills in second and could have gone faster if I hadn't had to stay with him. Overall milage for the day was better for the v-10 by 3MPG. IMHO, when it comes to big gassers, the 460 isn't even in the same league...

The 460 is a monster! I think your dad's is a little tired or else he needs to know you are racing when you are racing.

2000 excursion v10 mpg

Ditto what Stan said. Even with my 285 AT II+ tires, I get around 14-15 highway mileage if I keep it at 65. The bedcover makes the diff. I'm not pulling a sheetmetal drouge chute (tailgate). Also, getting lower engine revs at cruising due to the higher gearing the tires provide. In Wyoming, I can idle in neutral and get 65 mph/60 mpg on the eastound leg, although it's hard on the brakes keeping it that slow. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I'm getting a bed cover then.

Smurf, tell your dad to hook up the 8th plug wire next time. We have a couple 460-powered buses (and 2 351's) at work. The 351's will run with the V-10's...the 460's will run AWAY from them. They all get about the same mileage--2-4 around town, 7-9 highway (pushing 11-12' high bodies). Hills that are a WOT first-gear affair with a V-10 are a WOT second-gear affair for the 460s (and a second-gear, about-60%-throttle run for the PSD's). How to improve V-10 mileage? Trade it for a PSD. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I totally disagree with Johnny. My buddy and I have IDENTICAL trailers with identical loads inside. If I am in front him I walk away from his 97 350 with the 460. If I am behind him I have to get out of the throttle so I don't run him over. I get about 8-9 mpg towing while he gets about 5-7 mpg. I don't know what the factory specs are for the 460 hp and torque rating but would guess is lower than the V10. Just a guess though.

I agree with you 03psd 4x4, I believe the V-10 is more powerful than the 460 which is only rated at 245 HP and 400 ft lb torque compared to the V-10 which is rated at 310 HP and 425 ft lb torque. I'm not knocking the 460 which is a great engine, but I think that the V-10 is more powerful and fuel efficient than the 460.

[ QUOTE ] I agree with you 03psd 4x4, I believe the V-10 is more powerful than the 460 which is only rated at 245 HP and 400 ft lb torque compared to the V-10 which is rated at 310 HP and 425 ft lb torque. I'm not knocking the 460 which is a great engine, but I think that the V-10 is more powerful and fuel efficient than the 460. [/ QUOTE ] Banks says: The V10 has 197 hp and 270 ft-lbs of torque to the rear wheels. 460 has 178 hp and 334 ft-lbs of torque to the rear wheels. I would love to believe that this v10 is a great engine but all the one's i've seen aren't. The heads are prone to blowing spark plugs out (design engineer should be fired for that) as do all the triton motors. I can't understand why they don't fix that...it is such and easy fix and it is a really expensive repair (over 2k)! Mine pings like hell on pretty much any kind of gas. I had a 460 (1989 and 1986) that ran like hell and never got serviced. They sucked gas like hell too, but the 1989 has 400,000 miles on the original block and still fires up on the first turn after sitting for months. I know this v10 won't last anywhere near that. The tranny is worse! I know that pile won't make it to 120K. I wish I bought a diesel, they make more power stock, they have the capacity to make tons more power with some mods and they get 63% better gas milage to top it off. Why isn't FORD pushing it more and dropping the price tag?

I have a 2001 V10 F350 4X4 SRW now that I load pretty heavy. It replaced a '92 460 F250 (but nearly identical) that I used with the same load (9.5' Hallmark overhead camper towing a Explorer.) The V10 goes up the hills a little bit better (maybe 3-5 mph) and gets almost identical mileage (about 9.0 round trip) over the same route (Loveland, CO over all the passes to Southern Utah.) It's foot to floor in 2nd gear (4200 RPM) on the passes with an occaisional shift into 1st if you get trapped behing an 18 wheeler stopped in the right had lane. 72-73 on the flats. So I rate them pretty equal, but the V10 is much more pleasant to drive. Starts, runs and performs wonderfully! The only flustrating thing is the programming of the cruise control. Really stinks?

[ QUOTE ] Banks says: The V10 has 197 hp and 270 ft-lbs of torque to the rear wheels. 460 has 178 hp and 334 ft-lbs of torque to the rear wheels. [/ QUOTE ] Torque rules. And this would explain why the 460's at work will run away from the V-10's going up hills. Of course, the PSD's will run away from the 460's, too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

[ QUOTE ] Seriously, I doubt claims of 18mpg on a V-10 as much as some of the claims on the PSD. [/ QUOTE ] You mean the ones where guys claim 28 and 30 miles per gallon. Right.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

V10 6.8L mpg

  • Add to quote

Hello folks, I am new to the board, and looking to purchase a 2000-2003 Excursion. Can anybody out there give me an idea what kind of mpg they're getting (or heard of) in city driving (non-towing) with the V10. I'm looking for a 2000-2003 Excursion, and am trying to decide on the V10, or 7.3L diesel. Most of my driving will be short run city errands. Thank you,

2000 excursion v10 mpg

go 7.3 I have herd the V10 nets around 10mpg or so.. i get over 20 if i drive nice with my 7.3

When I first started looking, I drove on around with the v-10, with my driving style, I was averaging 12-13. In the one I bought, after smartening upo a bit, I got the 7.3, after exhaust and intake I averaged 18-19 in the summer. I can't wait to get the TW chip with the 80hp econo setting. Wonder what I'll jump to then.

2000 excursion v10 mpg

My last SD was a V10. I got 10mpg on a good day. GO with the 7.3 for many more reasons than just mpg's.

2000 excursion v10 mpg

My wife drives a '00 EXC w/V10, and we use it pull our travel trailer. It gets 9-10 mpg whether we're uphill with a head wind pulling the trailer or running empty going downhill with a tail wind. It does pull nicetho and it does have good power, but not as good as my F250 w/7.3. It is more comfortable with the kids and dogs for cross country trips. We got the gasser because my wife didn't want a diesel.....she's the one that drives it so..........

2000 excursion v10 mpg

Get the 7.3 you will not be disappointed mine 199,000 miles and runs great

I'd go with the diesel, they're better in just all aspects. Power Longevity MPG

2000 excursion v10 mpg

V10 is gay

2000 excursion v10 mpg

The wife's excursion is a V-10.....It's ok.. She gets 10 around town, but her size 5 foot is very very heavy. I can get 15 on the highway, but thats with E load range tires at 70 PSI, a throttle body spacer, K and N, flowmaster 2 chamber. It's not too bad. And it was cheap. Never pulled much more than the 4 wheelers and go carts with it. I seriously doubt it will last longer than our 7.3 Excursion though. We are going to install headers and see if that helps . Still beats driving a van...

2000 excursion v10 mpg

Agreed. The V-10 belongs in the VIPER, nothing else.

2000 excursion v10 mpg

I had a V10 before my 6.0...it still haunts my dreams everynight -Evan

2000 excursion v10 mpg

Now thats funny...lol

2000 excursion v10 mpg

v10:supergay:

2000 excursion v10 mpg

i know this thread is super old but i just found it on google, i would totally go with a 7.3. we have a 2003 v10 (my mom wanted it cause it was quieter..... women....) we avaerage between 11.5 and 12.5 city and we can normally get about 16 highway

2000 excursion v10 mpg

Towing with the v10 is decent, is rather use my f150, and my 250 tows like a dream in comparison, but good luck.
