Ocean Explorer

ocean explorer cruise cost

The 138-passenger Ocean Explorer cruise ship is the newest vessel in a purpose-built polar fleet, and also the smallest ship offered by Quark Expeditions . Arctic and Antarctic travelers choosing Ocean Explorer are treated to a modern and refined atmosphere, excellent sightlines and outdoor access, top-notch guides, and smooth sailing due to the ship’s inverted bow. The Ocean Explorer ship was built in 2021 by Ulstein; she’s part of the SunStone Infinity series and will launch in Antarctic waters in late 2024.

Ocean Explorer Review

AdventureSmith Explorations’ Ocean Explorer review includes a detailed description of the small ship including deck plans and a photo gallery. Our experts have been aboard nearly every small expedition ship in the polar regions. Please read our Ocean Explorer ship review below then contact our polar cruise experts to compare the Ocean Explorer with  Antarctica ships and  expedition ships  that offer  Antarctica cruises and Arctic cruises .

Choose the Ocean Explorer for her superior comfort and modern feel. With a leading ice class rating and inverted Ulstein X-Bow, the Ocean Explorer offers a smoother ride and faster transits. Nearly every cabin offers a walkout balcony, with various solo traveler options. Add top-trained, loyal guides, thoughtful amenities and sweeping sightlines with views directly into the sea, and Ocean Explorer becomes a leader in polar vessels.

Design, Sustainability & Accessibility

For guest comfort and aesthetics, Ocean Explorer offers bespoke Scandinavian interiors with grand fixtures and luxe furnishings throughout. Spaces blend the outdoors with the indoors via features including floor-to-ceiling glass library walls. The ship’s ample observation decks create opportunities for photographs with a variety of vantages, plus increased opportunities to capture wildlife on the move. An elevator accesses all decks of the ship, however accessible cabins are not available.

Ocean Explorer’s Micro Auto Gasification System incinerates waste that then creates stored energy for use on board, making her a leader in state-of-the-art waste handling. Her X-Bow increases efficiency while underway, reducing fuel consumption. Rolls Royce zero-speed stabilizers help ensure smooth sailing and steadiness when at rest. Finally, Ocean Explorer’s Safe Return to Port system maintains power even in cases of engine failure.

Onboard Facilities

The Ocean Explorer cruise ship offers upscale, inviting spaces and amenities aimed at ultimate guest comfort in demanding polar climates. The ship touts unbelievable viewing areas, including a dramatic two-story forward lounge and the well-stocked library’s floor-to-ceiling glass refuge, with views straight down into the sea. Complimentary basic WiFi is offered throughout the ship, with a premium option available. Finally, a medical clinic offers peace of mind during remote polar travel.

Lecture Theater & Observation Decks

The Explorer Lecture Lounge seats all guests at the same time, for informative talks on polar wildlife, history, geology and more. With TVs strategically placed around the room and clean sightlines, every guest is guaranteed a front-row seat.

Ocean Explorer’s Deck 8 features 360-degree opportunities to view and photograph passing wildlife and scenery, away from sea spray; an interior Observation Lounge (seating 63 guests at a time) adds a heated space from which to soak in the ship’s surrounds. And Deck 7 features a special forward-facing Observation Deck, just below the Bridge (guests can also enjoy the open Bridge policy for sheltered forward viewing on Deck 7).

Dining & Bars

The Ocean Explorer cruise ship offers her guests numerous daily dining options. The Main Dining Room seats up to 144 guests at a time for buffet-style breakfast and lunch, in a modern, bright, stylish setting. This dining room also features a nightly 5-course dinner, for an elegant 3-hour affair. For groups, a private dining room accommodates up to 36 guests with buffet-style service; reserve on board (no additional fee).

Deck 8’s Compass Restaurant (the Observation Bistro) provides a streamlined alternative to the full-course dinner in the Main Dining Room. Buffet-style options enable guests to eat a lighter meal, or save time for relaxing. Seating is unassigned for all meals in all dining areas.

Ocean Explorer features two bars: the al fresco Sun Deck Bar and the lecture-lounge-adjacent Latitude Bar (the latter seating up to 46 guests at once). Enjoy lush sofas and chairs, faux marble-topped tables and a convivial atmosphere.

Jacuzzis, Sauna & Gym

A dry sauna (accommodating up to 15 guests at a time) and two upper deck, outdoor Jacuzzis invite guests to unwind after an exciting day exploring in the polar wilds. A fitness center ensures guests can maintain routines, with machines such as treadmills, a spin bike and an elliptical machine—all beside floor-to-ceiling windows for wildlife sighting.

The onboard Library accommodates up to 47 guests with comfortable seating, accent lighting, view windows and reference materials. The Ocean Explorer ship’s library seamlessly transitions into the 2-story glass atrium for forward viewing off the bow.

Ocean Explorer’s Deck 3 Mudroom optimizes the process for polar excursions. Each guest is assigned an open storage locker for life jackets, coats, and waterproof pants and boots throughout the voyage. With thoughtful locker assignments and ample benches, no one is cramped while preparing or ending an off-ship excursion.

Activities & Expeditions

For expedition operations, 15 Zodiacs deployed via four separate sea-level embarkation points get guests out into the environment faster. Also on board are 16 sea kayaks for long outings, 16 inflatable kayaks for one-time paddle excursions, 16 stand-up paddleboards, full dry suits, gloves and life jackets, plus camping gear.

Crew, Guides & Expedition Leaders

The 105 crew members aboard work to ensure a seamless guest experience, where lifelong memories are made. And the 22-26 onboard Quark Expeditions guides (some with over 20 years of experience) are eager to base their expeditions from this purpose-built, comfortable small ship. These elite guides are trained above and beyond every standard imaginable for safety and preparedness in the Polar Regions. Guests’ experience on board the Ocean Explorer ship will be enriched by lectures and interactions with professionals from various knowledge bases: paddle guides, photography guides, geologists, ornithologists, historians, penguin scientists, marine biologists and other experts relevant to each specific polar destination.

Cabins & Ocean Explorer Deck Plan

Luxury cruise ship charging $33k per person stranded in freezing arctic.

Fjord-gaddeboudit!

A luxury cruise ship that charged passengers $33,000 has run aground in a remote area of Greenland — and will be stranded for days in the freezing Arctic waiting for help to arrive, according to reports.

Aurora Expeditions’ Ocean Explorer, an Australia-based cruise operator carrying 206 passengers and crew, got stuck Monday while navigating through Alpefjord in Northeast Greenland National Park, the world’s northernmost park situated between two glaciers.

To make matters worse, several cases of COVID have been reported on board among the mostly elderly passengers, most of whom are Australian, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.

“We do have a couple of cases of COVID, but there’s a doctor on board,” Steven Fraser told the outlet, adding he contracted the virus aboard the ship.

Fraser, a retired Aussie traveling with his wife, and the rest of the passengers may have to wait several more days before being rescued.

The earliest a vessel can reach the Ocean Explorer is Friday morning, according to Danish authorities.

Representatives for Aurora Expeditions did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.

Ocean Explorer, a cruise ship operated by Aurora Expeditions, was 11 days into a month-long voyage when it grounded in a remote area of Northeast Greenland National Park on Monday afternoon.

The three-week cruise left on Sept. 1 and was slated to return to port on Sept. 22.

Aurora Expeditions, which specializes in polar trips , touts the Ocean Explorer as a 342-foot Nordic vessel with 10 different types of suites and staterooms, each spanning anywhere from 122 to 600 square feet, as well as a gym, wellness center and spa, glass atrium and observation deck.

The ship, which was completed in 2021, was “purpose-built for expedition travel to the world’s most remote destinations” that’s “outfitted with the latest cutting-edge technology.”

“It’s a cruise that a lot of wealthy older people do because they can get out into these wilderness areas,” Fraser told the Australian news site.

Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command (JAC) said that its closest inspection vessel, Knud Rasmussen, could get to Ocean Explorer by Friday morning.

The Ocean Explorer hasn’t been able to free itself since it ran aground around nearly 900 miles from Greenland’s capital, Nuuk.

As of Tuesday morning, Arctic Command’s closest inspection vessel, Knud Rasmussen, was 1,200 nautical miles (1,381 land-measured miles) from the cruise ship, JAC said.

Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command (JAC) said in a statement that no one on board has been injured, and the ship hasn’t sustained any damage, according to Arctic Command Commander Captain Brian Jensen.

Jensen said it’s possible that Ocean Explorer could free itself once the tide becomes high.

The stranded ship was reportedly built to withstand Greenland's unforgiving polar conditions. However, it hasn't been able to free itself from the ocean floor in Alpefjord's waters, which is situated between two glaciers.

JAC shared another update on Wednesday morning confirming that Ocean Explorer is still stuck, though “the atmosphere on the ship is good and everyone on board is fine.”

Fraser, one of 90 Australians aboard, told The Morning Herald that the crew had already attempted to lighten the ship and dig itself out from the ocean floor, which is a mix of sediment, sand and silt left by a nearby glacier.

“They’ve offloaded the anchor … and they’ve taken the lifeboats, so they’re floating in the water but they’re still attached to the boat, just to try and lighten the load a bit,” Fraser told The Morning Herald.

Aurora Expeditions charges passengers nearly $40,000 for its month-long cruises. Tickets for an upcoming 12-day voyage to Antarctica will run travelers $13,395 each.

On Aurora Expeditions’ website, 30-day cruises will run passengers as much as $38,895 per person.

It’s next voyage, a 12-day trip set to depart from Argentina on Oct. 30 and travel throughout Antarctica, costs $13,395 per passenger.

Ocean Explorer, a cruise ship operated by Aurora Expeditions, was 11 days into a month-long voyage when it grounded in a remote area of Northeast Greenland National Park on Monday afternoon.

Are Luxury Cruises Really Worth It?

With price tags that can be in the tens of thousands, luxury cruises aren’t cheap. a look at what’s included and how to pick the right one..

While the term “luxury” is often thrown around and overused, the top-end luxury cruise lines really do deliver a five-star experience that’s akin to staying at a grand hotel—with the added bonus of all-inclusive pricing and a ship that brings you to multiple destinations during your stay.

When you book an ultra-luxury cruise, you can expect a carefully curated travel experience. Having sailed on dozens of luxury cruises the world over, I can attest that on these best-of-class vessels, you’ll enjoy high-quality design details, fine artwork, and all-you-can-consume champagne and caviar between visits to tony and lesser-known destinations. In addition, luxury cruise lines also focus on providing immersive and enriching programming that offers a more meaningful and richer understanding of the places and cultures you are visiting through expert-led lectures and guided tours. And the crew to passenger ratio is often as high as one crew member to every two guests, ensuring an elevated level of service.

For years the ultra-luxury end of cruising was limited to a small selection of top brands: Seabourn , Silversea , Regent Seven Seas Cruises , and Crystal , to name a few. But that’s changing. New brands are emerging such as Scenic and the more recently launched Explora Journeys and Atlas Ocean Voyages , each with their own nuances and expertise. (Scenic and Atlas are making a name for themselves in the expedition cruising space, for instance, while Explora promises a beautiful boutique cruising experience on a 900-plus passenger ship.) Luxury hotel companies (and even railway brands) are also getting in the game, with such well-recognized names as Ritz-Carlton , Four Seasons, Orient Express , and Aman all recently unveiling plans to offer a luxury cruise product to guests.

Natalya Leahy, who was named president of Seabourn last year, says the luxury cruise market is growing due to several factors, not the least of which is that there are more than 22 million people in the U.S. with a net worth of a million dollars or more. Well-heeled boomers are booking luxury cruises, but so are Millenials and even younger travelers.

Afar spoke with Leahy in Genoa, Italy, last summer, as the brand prepared to launch the 264-passenger Seabourn Pursuit , the second ultraluxury expedition ship in the Seabourn fleet, which is exploring remote destinations that include Antarctica and the Kimberley region of Australia.

We asked Leahy’s advice on what travelers should know before going on a luxury cruise—and added a few of our own tips as well.

How to pick the luxury cruise line that’s best for you

Leahy suggests starting out by asking your luxury cruising friends and acquaintances what lines they like. Word of mouth is frequently a factor in the luxury-end of cruising. “Our guests are our biggest ambassadors and bring many new guests onboard,” she says.

Once you get some ideas, or even if you don’t, consult with an expert. “In general, for luxury travel, it’s helpful to have either a travel advisor or, if you book directly with us, a personal cruise consultant,” she says. “It’s very helpful to have someone who is there to advise you.” (Here’s our complete list of travel advisors who are specialized in selling cruises .)

A luxury cruise should be a carefree vacation experience, given all the inclusions, Leahy says. She notes that “when you want to see the world and compare land travel to cruise travel, cruise is much easier to organize.”

But there are nuances—between cruise lines, types of accommodations, and even what is (and isn’t) included in the “all-inclusive” pricing (for instance, certain more exclusive excursions might be extra). This is where working with an expert comes in handy.

Leahy says she seeks advice even when she cruises, which is often with multiple family members or friends. “If I even attempt to organize it on land, I think we all would become ‘best enemies,’” she laughs. “I really believe travel advisors play an incredibly strategic role for us,” Leahy adds. “They know our brands.”

Two-thirds of Seabourn’s business comes through travel advisors, and on any given cruise, about half the guests have cruised with the line before and half are new to the brand—and often new to cruising—Leahy says.

The best luxury cruise lines

Luxury ships vary in size and destinations they visit as well as other factors such as what’s included in the cruise fare. For instance, is your transportation included? Wi-Fi? Are there any upcharges for specialty dining? Will you pay extra for excursions? Will you have a butler? Every brand has its bragging points.

Atlas Ocean Voyages

The newest cruise line in America, Atlas Ocean Voyages came onto the cruise scene in 2021 and has grown into a fleet of three, 198-passenger yacht-style expedition ships ( World Voyager , World Traveller , and World Navigator ). Atlas has become known for providing extreme comfort and luxury in some of the most extreme polar regions in the world. But it also sails it the warmer waters of the Mediterranean, where it offers immersive culture and culinary programming.

The resurrected Crystal Cruises , now owned and managed by high-end tour operating company Abercrombie & Kent and known simply as Crystal , consists of two ships, the 740-passenger Crystal Serenity and 606-passenger Crystal Symphony , both with complimentary Nobu restaurants aboard.

Explora Journeys

Explora Journeys , a new luxury line from shipping company MSC Group , launched its first, 922-passenger ship, Explora I , last summer with an extensive spa, four pools, and lush interior design details. Sister ship Explora II joins the fleet in September 2024.

Regent Seven Seas

Regent Seven Seas Cruises differentiates itself by including a lot in its fares—such as business-class airfare and unlimited shore excursions—on ships ranging from 490 to 750 passengers. The line launched its newest ship, the 750-passenger Seven Seas Grandeur , the latest of what Regent calls its “world’s most luxurious” ships, last November.

Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

The famous hotel brand launched its first cushy yacht in 2022 . Aboard the 298-passenger Evrima , attractions include hotel-like suites and bartenders who are whizzes at creating personalized concoctions. The 456-passenger Ilma follows in September 2024.

The Seabourn fleet, with ships ranging from 458 to 600 guests, features complimentary fine dining. And the brand’s two expedition ships are outfitted with 24 Zodiacs and kayaks for exploration led by a 24-person expedition team, plus a six-passenger submarine for undersea views.

Australian expedition line Scenic has as many as 10 dining experiences onboard its intimate vessels and toys that include an eight-passenger submarine and state-of-the-art Airbus helicopters aboard its two 228-passenger expedition yachts.

Silversea ships range from 254 to 728 passengers, plus two smaller expedition ships, the 132-passenger Silver Explorer and 100-passenger Silver Origin . The line’s S.A.L.T. program focuses on local dining and drinking experiences, and all guests get butler service—on ships that include the recently launched 728-passenger Silver Nova .

Make sure to choose the ship that’s right for you

Many people start off their vacation planning with the destination, but Leahy makes a case for the strong role the ship should play in your decision-making.

“The unique thing about cruising is your experience continues 24/7,” she says. “It doesn’t end with visiting the destinations. You step onboard and have this experience with fine dining and interaction with our cruise members and entertainment and shows and live music that continues the experience.”

Social media posts and cruise line websites provide clues to help you understand the environment on board specific brands, Leahy says, adding that you should check reviews and look for photos.

She says it’s not uncommon for guests to describe Seabourn ships as their “home away from home.”

Because you will be spending a considerable amount of time on the ship, just as you would when comparing land-based resorts you’ll also want to get an idea of what’s offered onboard in terms of bars, restaurants, lounges, gym and spa facilities, and entertainment. Also consider the amount of outdoor space, such as outdoor dining options, pools, bars, and other spots to catch sea views. Dig into the onboard programming as well to see if there will be talks, live shows, classes, and other offerings that cater to your interests.

How to decide on the right suite and whether to upgrade

Luxury ships in general are usually entirely or mostly made up of suite accommodations with features such as large bathrooms and walk-in closets. You’ll have ocean views and will likely have a balcony on these high-end vessels.

If you’re looking for more space, you might consider upgrading to a suite with a living room and a larger deck. Some luxury suites are apartment-size and come with amenities such as private outdoor hot tubs.

Cruise line websites generally do a good job in terms of providing descriptions, layouts, square footage, and photos of the various options, but a specialized travel advisor or consultant can help you assess your space needs.

Think about how much time you will be spending on the ship and in your suite versus off of the ship to help decide whether the upgrade will be worth the investment. If it’s a busy and active itinerary with daily port stops, it may not be. But if it’s a sailing with longer days at sea, having extra-plush digs could certainly pay off.

Start with a shorter cruise

While you can book luxury cruise itineraries for weeks or months, Leahy suggests before you go all out with a longer sailing you consider a test cruise to see if you will like the experience.

“I think it’s important to start cruising by trying for seven days whether the Caribbean, Alaska, or the Mediterranean,” she says. “They are bucket list destinations and yet they don’t commit you to being the first time on a ship for too long. It’s a great way to start cruising and experiencing.”

Don’t forget about the land-based experiences

Once you decide on a destination and what cruise line you want to try, and you book your suite, it’s important to start thinking about what land-based experiences you’d like to have at the various ports of call.

An advantage of cruising is that your cruise line will provide a selection of carefully curated choices for exploring the ports, for those who prefer not to do independent exploration.

And think about whether you want to extend your stay whether in your embarkation city or your final destination and whether the cruise line might be able to help with that. It’s not uncommon for cruise lines to offer pre- and post-cruising packages that include hotel stays and additional excursion options.

Luxury cruise lines like Seabourn are working to create “deeper and richer” land experiences, says Leahy.

Tracking the Remnants of Hector

By Matthew Bloch ,  William B. Davis ,  Madison Dong ,  Judson Jones ,  John Keefe and Bea Malsky

The remnants of Hector were in the North Pacific Ocean early Thursday Pacific time, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The system had sustained wind speeds of 35 miles per hour.

Hector is the eighth named storm to form in the Eastern Pacific in 2024.

What does the storm look like from above?

Satellite imagery can help determine the strength, size and cohesion of a storm. The stronger a storm becomes, the more likely an eye will form in the center. When the eye looks symmetrical, that often means the storm is not encountering anything to weaken it.

Storms that form in the Atlantic or the Pacific generally move west, meaning Atlantic storms pose a greater threat to North America. If a storm forms in the Pacific close to land, it can bring damaging winds and rain before pushing out to sea.

However, an air mass can sometimes block a storm, driving it north or northeast toward the Baja California peninsula and the west coast of Mexico. Occasionally, a storm can move farther north, as Hurricane Hilary did last year, bringing damaging winds and intense rain to Southern California.

Hurricane season in the Eastern Pacific began on May 15, two weeks before the Atlantic season started. Both seasons run through Nov. 30.

Another factor for storm-watchers this year is the likely development of La Niñ a , the intermittent, large-scale atmospheric pattern that can affect weather worldwide.

In the Pacific Ocean, La Niña increases wind shear, which is a change in wind speed and/or direction with height. Those changes make it more difficult for storms to form. (In the Atlantic, La Niña has the opposite effect, reducing wind shear and increasing the chances for storm formation.)

Tracking map Tracking data is from the National Hurricane Center. The map shows probabilities of at least 5 percent. The forecast is for up to five days, with that time span starting up to three hours before the reported time that the storm reaches its latest location. Wind speed probability data is not available north of 60.25 degrees north latitude.

Wind arrivals table Arrival times are generated from a New York Times analysis of National Hurricane Center data. Geographic locations use data from the U.S. Census Bureau and Natural Earth. Time zones are based on Google. The table shows predicted arrival times of sustained, damaging winds of 58 m.p.h. or more for select cities with a chance of such winds reaching them. If damaging winds reach a location, there is no more than a 10 percent chance that they will arrive before the “earliest reasonable” time and a 50 percent chance they will arrive before the “most likely” time.
