The First Timer's Guide To Big Sky

Big Sky, Montana is a family-friendly, year-round destination. The most popular times to visit are during the winter ski season and during the summer season - but the fall and spring are a blast too! There's really no bad time of year to visit Big Sky. You can always find something fun to do in the little town that's next to everything.

Big Sky is located in the Madison Range of Southwest Montana. It's almost right in the middle of Bozeman and West Yellowstone off of Highway 191. Just turn by the stoplight near the Conoco onto Highway 64 and you'll be in Big Sky. You can't miss it. It's the only stoplight in town.

If you're flying, book your flights to Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN). Most major carriers fly into Bozeman, and Big Sky is about an hour south of the airport. Find directions from BZN to Big Sky here .

Big Sky Ski Resort Quick Facts

The Mountain: Choose your path from 85 miles of trails. Lone Peak offers extensive intermediate and expert terrain- its exposed peaks are renowned for their challenging runs. Those newer to skiing will find plenty of opportunities at its base or on the slopes of Andesite Mountain. Lone Peak has 4350 feet of vertical, Andesite a gentler 1250. Lift lines are famously short.

The Ski Resort: Rejuvenate at Solace Spa, and visit the Mountain Mall for a variety of shopping opportunities, including unique works from local Montana artists.

But this place is much more than mere winter sport mecca. In fact, for adventurous sorts, the activities of spring, summer, and fall are every bit as alluring. Hiking, whitewater rafting, and fly fishing throughout the region is the stuff of legend.

If you’re motivated by rest and relaxation instead, this quiet corner of southwestern Montana isn’t any less attractive, either. It boasts an impressive stable of five-star properties, plus a laundry list of cosmopolitan-caliber restaurants, spas, and speakeasies. And all of it is backdropped by some of the most stunning scenery in the Lower 48. Yes, Big Sky is the ideal place to elevate your altitude without necessarily elevating your heart rate.

The sprawling property, perched at the foothills of the Spanish Peaks, is particularly picturesque. And yet it’s just the tip of the snowcapped crag when it comes to sumptuous stays around here.

• Book a fly-fishing guide and experience on the Gallatin River. Gallatin River Guides brings guests out onto the water every month of the calendar year and caters to adventurers of all ages and skill levels, from first-timers to seasoned pros.

Lone Mountain Ranch

This century-old guest ranch straddling the North Fork of the Gallatin River offers all the rustic charm of the American West while retaining the trappings of modern luxury. It holds 25 stand-alone log cabins on its 148 acres, with access to horse-drawn sleigh rides — and nearly a hundred miles of nordic ski trails — throughout the winter, plus fly fishing and horseback riding in the warmer months. No matter when you arrive, you’ll be met with world-class hospitality and some of the best food and drink in all of Big Sky.

Montage Big Sky

Not even 3 years old, this grandiose five-star resort has already changed the luxury hospitality game in southwestern Montana. And though it encompasses some 139 guest rooms (and 39 residences), there's a distinctly cozy vibe to the property, buttressed by an old American West aesthetic — and floor-to-ceiling windows that showcase the majestic surroundings, making you feel small by comparison.

Aspects Big Sky

This modern collection of stand-alone villas is ideal for families looking to lock down a home away from home. Each unit comes with a kitchen, a terrace, and access to a hot tub. The fully furnished accommodations are positioned about an 18-minute drive from the base of the ski mountain.

Summit Hotel at Big Sky Resort

Slopeside accommodations in Mountain Village are plentiful, especially if you book well in advance of your arrival. Of the four distinct lodging styles here, the Summit Hotel provides the most traditional experience, with ski-on/bike-on access to the lift directly from the ground floor lobby.

One&Only Moonlight Basin

Arriving in time for the 2025 ski season is the first-ever American outpost of the highly vaunted five-star hotel collection. This one will rest at the foot of an 8,100-acre wilderness and recreation area. Designed by the award-winning architectural team of Olson Kundig, the structure promises to meld seamlessly into its untamed surroundings.

The Big Sky Community Organization maintains 36 miles worth of multiuse, multidirectional trails that are family- and dog-friendly. They’re also suitable for mountain biking — all from the center of town. And that’s just a small fraction of what you have available once you drive up to any of the dozens of popular trailheads on the outskirts. Eliza McClure, local and avid outdoor enthusiast, recommends the Ousel Falls Park Trail just south of town. “It’s only about 1.5 miles round-trip, with minimal elevation gain,” she explains of the jaunt, which leads to a photogenic cascade. “Small effort, but big reward.”

Horseback Riding

“We're lucky enough to be in some of the most gorgeous mountains in the world and exploring them on horseback is tough to beat,” says Drew Hay, director of operations for Gallatin River Guides . Jake’s Horses is a long-standing outfitter that offers year-round adventures. But if you’re arriving between December and March, Hay says you shouldn’t miss the famed Sleigh Ride Dinner at Lone Mountain Ranch, where a horse-drawn sled carries you through snowy backcountry until you arrive at a lantern-lit cabin, featuring a chef-prepared coursed tasting menu. “The sleigh ride itself is super-fun; add in the super-unique dining experience and it's tough to beat,” he adds.

Big Sky Resort is the third-largest in North America by skiable acreage. It includes 300 named runs across four connected mountains. And it’s not just quantity but quality here: Winter sees more than 400 inches of snowfall. Accessing it all has never been easier, with the opening of the brand-new Lone Peak Tram , which summits the 11,166-foot eponymous pinnacle. But as the resort's vice president of mountain sports Christine Baker is quick to point out, you don’t need to be an expert rider to head on up and marvel at the panorama. In fact, you don’t even need to wait for winter at all. “The 360-degree views are incredible, and on a clear day, you can see the Grand Teton and millions of acres of wilderness surrounding Big Sky,” adds the local who has skied here every season — save one — since 1982. “In the winter, there's scenic access that typically doesn’t have a line and anyone who can ski or ride a green run can access the new tram.”

Fly Fishing

Southwestern Montana is fly-fishing paradise. This is where they filmed "A River Runs Through It," a film that serves as an ode to the activity. Nevertheless, as Hay will tell you, many visitors are surprised to learn this is a pastime to be enjoyed at all times of year. You can secure his expertise over at Gallatin River Guides. During the summer months, McClure recommends beginners check out Yellowstone Fly Fish , an outfitter owned by the Montana Whitewater Rafting Company (another worthwhile summertime adventure) about 10 miles outside of town.

Big Sky Bar Crawl

Big Sky isn’t exactly big on population. The community’s official population stops short of 3,000 residents. But this is hardly some sleepy mountain town. In addition to offering an enviable après-ski scene, the town center flaunts a handful of raucous watering holes that stay rocking well into the evening hours. Local favorites include Tips Up , Beehive Basin Brewery , and Brothel Bikes. And if you’re staying at the aforementioned Lone Mountain Ranch, you’ll want to take advantage of your access to the town’s hippest new speakeasy, Auric Room . “When you enter, it feels as if you're stepping back in time to a place where you can imagine cowboys lingering in 1915,” says Mike Hope, owner of the Rocking R Bar in nearby Bozeman . “The design here elegantly blends cowboy culture with Parisian flair.”

The signature dining outpost within the Montage is Cortina , an Italian chophouse that somehow manages to weave Montana flair effortlessly into the mix. So, even though you’re getting colorful pastas and wood-oven-roasted proteins, the stars of the show are most often outsized heritage chops, river fish, and local game. It all exits an open kitchen into a sprawling dining room with Western-worn charm.

This lunchtime fixture at the base of the mountain has been a local favorite for 16 years. The menu is as simple as it is sensational: great glizzies, Montana-made ice cream, and beer on draft. But not necessarily in that order. “Make sure you get the Sweaty Lefty,” advises McClure. It’s a gut-busting hot dog smothered in zesty mayo, shredded cheddar, and bacon.

McClure is also fond of this locally owned restaurant-slash-liquor store. The food menu leans into non-GMO organic produce and meats whenever possible, and the booze highlights spirits and suds sourced from within the state.

The Riverhouse BBQ

“We love sending our guests to The Riverhouse BBQ — it’s one of my personal favorites,” says Patrick McVey, general manager of Lone Mountain Ranch. “It’s a casual and fun barbecue restaurant and bar nestled right on the banks of the Gallatin River. Whether you're enjoying a cocktail with a view or savoring authentic Texas-style barbecue, the experience is unparalleled. And don't miss the $7 fried chicken, a crowd favorite in the perfect setting.”

Horn & Cantle

If you want something a little more polished, however, slip into your finest cowboy boots and settle in for a taste of Lone Mountain’s edible ode to the Wild West. Elk meatballs, trout rillette, and wild game bolognese are just some of the specialities to enjoy within this elegant A-framed cabin.

As has been repeatedly reported, the best time to see Big Sky is entirely dependent on what you want to do there. Skiers and snowboarders will find the finest powder between December and March. Mountain bikers and hikers will appreciate the 75-degree sunny days that typify June through August. As will music lovers, who can enjoy free family-friendly concerts held every Thursday night throughout the summer months. But for Baker, the secret season is April. “The skiing is fantastic, being that April is one of the snowiest months of the year,” she reveals. “And with so few people on the mountain, you really feel like you have it all to yourself.”

Big Sky is about a 50-mile drive south of the nearest major airport, Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport. Though it has the quaint feel of a regional provider, the airport has expanded its service in recent years to allow for regular flights from all the major U.S. cities, including Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago. The easiest way to get down to Big Sky upon landing is to rent a car. But there are public transportation options, including the Skyline Bus , which operates between the two destinations seven days a week during summer and winter high seasons.

If you opt to arrive in town without your own wheels, there are Ubers and Lyfts to shuttle you between your desired destinations. Additionally, as of last year, the local community launched Big Sky Connect , a fare-free, on-demand service that allows visitors to request rides around Town Center and the Meadow Village areas. You’ll have to download an app to make use of the service.

Where to Go in 2024

Gallatin River Whitewater Rafting (Half Day) in Big Sky, Montana

The classic half-day trip runs through the heart of the whitest water in the Yellowstone Area! You will begin with some small rapids which progress in size until we drop into the lower canyon where we will run BIG rapids including House Rock and the continuous Mad Mile.

Big Sky Resort uses variable pricing on lift tickets so prices are subject to change and buying your tickets well in advance of your trip is strongly recommended. 

PLEASE NOTE:

You have the option for your lift tickets to be mailed to you.  

If you do not have your tickets mailed to you then you will have to drive to “Mountain Village” (Big Sky Resort’s main ski base area) and take your receipt of purchase to the ticket window to obtain your passes. This could entail long lines and provide significant frustration on your first day of vacation.

As a guest staying at one of our properties, we are happy to assist you by accepting delivery on your behalf: packages, luggage or ski gear directly to our office in Big Sky Montana.  A $25 handling fee, per delivery, will be charged by Travel Big Sky Vacation Rentals which includes delivery of package to your property pre-arrival and pick up and drop off to shipper upon departure.  This will be charged to your guest reservation on day of delivery.  If additional deliveries are required during your stay a $25 (per delivery) feel will apply to your guest reservation.

In his 1962 book “Travels with Charley,” John Steinbeck wrote, “It seems to me that Montana is a great splash of grandeur. The scale is huge, but not overpowering. The land is rich with grass and color and the mountains are the kind I would create if mountains were put on my agenda.” While some aspects of his travelogue have since been disputed, it’s hard to argue with this description of the Treasure State. There’s glory, beauty, and adventure across the mountains, the plains, and everywhere in between.

“Montana is a nature lover’s paradise with a lot to offer,” says Jason Pittman, ranch manager at Alpine Falls Ranch . “From epic hiking with breathtaking mountain views, fantastic skiing, and biking trails to legendary fly-fishing, river rafting, bird watching, horseback riding, and more — there’s something for everyone of all ages and energy levels.” While places like Glacier National Park and Yellowstone tend to draw in travelers, they’re far from the only worthwhile destinations. “Don’t be afraid to get off the beaten path. Every town in Montana has a great story,” says Avery Patrick, the vice president of Showdown Montana .

Lolo National Forest

“At two million acres, Lolo National Forest is one of the smaller national forests in the state, but it features rivers, waterfalls, mountains, valleys, and nearly every physical feature Montana offers,” says Pittman. He describes the wildlife, geology, and scenery as “breathtaking,” and many of the area’s campgrounds and sites are open year-round for visitors to explore. The warmer months are particularly nice, as there’s hiking, biking, fishing, swimming, and more.

Red Lodge, Montana, is a certified mountain town that’s located in the Beartooth Mountains and surrounded by Custer Gallatin National Forest. Not only was it recently named the “ most charming” small town , but it’s also a gateway to Yellowstone. The route from Red Lodge to the national park — what’s known as the Beartooth Highway — is just as noteworthy. If you’re visiting Red Lodge in the winter, though, you’ll miss the drive; Beartooth Highway is only open to cars from Memorial Day weekend through mid-October (weather permitting).

Fort Benton

“Fort Benton is a cool Montana town along the banks of the Missouri River with an amazing history,” says Patrick. “Whether you want to recreate on the river or take a historical tour, you won’t be disappointed.” If you’re staying in town, she recommends booking a room at the Grand Union Hotel , Montana’s oldest operating hotel and an establishment that was once known as the finest lodging between Seattle and St. Louis.

“ Garnet Ghost Town is a real, well-preserved, Old West ghost town just outside of Missoula,” says Pittman, who recommends it “for those who love history and the Old West or just want to experience something that most will never get to see.” And if you happen to be in the area in June, your trip may overlap with Garnet Day, which he describes as a “can't-miss experience featuring Old West reenactments, games, music, food, and family-friendly activities that embrace the history of the town.”

For some, Big Sky is synonymous with ski season in Montana; after all, Big Sky Resort boasts more than 300 named runs across a series of connected mountains. The town of Big Sky, however, is an all-seasons destination, and it has a variety of incredible places to stay — from the rustic-chic cabins at Lone Mountain Ranch to the ultra-luxe Montage Big Sky . Plus, there’s even a brand-new One&Only property set to open in 2025.

“Beyond all the outdoor adventure at your fingertips, places like downtown Missoula are also full of breweries and restaurants with live music, great food and drinks, and cool locally-owned shops featuring independent artists, art galleries, and museums. It also has great architecture and plenty of historic sites for history buffs,” says Pittman. If you’re spending a few days in the city and searching for places to eat, he recommends checking out a few of his favorites: Big Dipper Ice Cream , Top Hat Restaurant & Bar , The Depot , and Break Espresso .

West Yellowstone

Yellowstone has five entrances, one of which is located in West Yellowstone, Montana. While it was only incorporated in the 1960s, the small town has been known as a gateway to the park for well over a century. It’s a great day trip from Island Park, Idaho — Travel + Leisure ’s Best Small Mountain Town of 2024 — and it’s especially fun in the summer when the West Yellowstone Rodeo is on and you can find huckleberry ice cream on nearly every corner in town.

Glacier National Park

If you haven’t yet experienced the splendor of Glacier National Park, add it to your list. One of the park’s highlights is the 50-mile Going-to-the-Sun Road, the stretch between West Glacier and St. Mary that goes through the heart of the park and by incredible observation points, waterfalls, and glacial lakes. Glacier is also a certified International Dark Sky Park, making it one of the best places to stargaze in Montana.

Medicine Rocks State Park

A lot of Montana’s tourist attractions and notable destinations are located on the western side of the state, but you’ll find Medicine Rocks State Park in the eastern region. The medicine rocks themselves are a collection of natural rock formations that are considered sacred by Native American tribes in the area. For a completely immersive experience, visitors can camp at one of the 12 campsites among the rocks.

There’s no shortage of lakes in Montana, and the 200-square-mile Flathead Lake is certainly one of the best. “The lake features islands, mountain views, and adventurous activities that make it a must-visit location,” says Pittman. A little over an hour’s drive from Missoula, it makes for the perfect day trip if you’re in the area.

Lookout Pass

Technically, Lookout Pass is located on the border between Montana and Idaho, but Pittman calls it the best place to ski in the Western Montana region, and he recommends it for anyone “who wants to experience Rocky Mountain skiing without having to drive 5 hours.”  He also adds that the ski area has “multiple trails of each skill level, restaurants and bars, and experienced staff,” making it a “can't-miss mountain for those visiting in the winter months.”

Travelers headed to Glacier National Park should make it a point to stop in Whitefish, a resort town with year-round appeal. Home to Whitefish Mountain Resort , this is a destination where winter sports are a priority — the resort features 3,000 acres of skiable terrain. If you prefer accommodations that are close to the resort, downtown Whitefish, and the national park, book a cozy, Western-inspired room at The Lodge at Whitefish Lake .

Clark Fork River

“If you've come to Western Montana with fishing in mind, the Clark Fork River is a must,” says Pittman. “The cold, raging waters of the river are also the perfect spot for some white water rafting or even for some more peaceful river floating (cocktails are a must).” But for anyone searching for something a bit more challenging on Montana’s largest river, he suggests “going straight to the Alberton Gorge , a spot on the Clark Fork that features some of the best and most challenging white water rafting in the region.”

Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park

When you come to Montana, you’ll see a variety of geological features, from mountains and valleys to lakes and caverns. If you want to experience the latter, Patrick suggests Lewis & Clark Caverns , a state park near Whitehall. “It is one of the largest known limestone caverns in the Northwest and is a very impressive 2-hour tour,” she says. After your tour wraps, she recommends stopping by LaHood Park Steakhouse along the Jefferson River for a margarita and a steak.

Great Falls

“While Great Falls might not be one of the most talked-about destinations in Montana, it’s one you don’t want to miss,” says Patrick. The centrally located city is referred to as “Montana’s base camp” and even has an international airport. “Whether you’re at the C. M. Russell Museum or the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center , Great Falls has great museums highlighting Western culture and has great lodging and dining options,” she adds. If you’re visiting in the summer, her insider tip is to make the 40-minute drive to nearby Sluice Boxes State Park for swimming, fishing, and rafting.

Diamond Lake

When you get to Diamond Lake, notes Pittman, ”you are greeted by a panoramic, jaw-dropping scene of a pristine, crystal-clear lake, ringed by forest and mountain peaks.” When the weather permits, he says you can fish, hike, picnic, or “just sit on the shoreline and take in the mountain air and amazing scenery.”

Southwestern Montana is usually associated with Yellowstone — it’s less than two hours from the national park — but it also has its own identity as one of the best places to live in Montana . Residents are able to take full advantage of the great outdoors; activities like fishing, hiking, backcountry exploring, and skiing are all at their doorstep. Additionally, Bozeman is known for its thriving arts and cultural scene. Spend even a little time in the city and you’ll find museums, art galleries, street festivals, farmers markets, and more.

Seeley Lake

Patrick calls Seeley Lake “the place to be” when summer temperatures peak, as there’s “fishing, boating, golfing, hiking, waterfalls, and, most importantly, huckleberry ice cream.” It’s also a beautiful fall destination; beginning in early October, you can expect the western larch needles to turn yellow and put on a show.

The capital of Montana, Helena sits between Yellowstone and Glacier, making it a good stopping point for anyone attempting to do both national parks in one trip. History buffs will find plenty of points of interest in the city, which was founded as a gold camp during Montana’s gold rush. The Last Chance Tour Train , for example, leaves from the Montana Historical Society Museum and takes riders on a journey through Helena’s past and present, passing by the State Capitol Building, the Cathedral of St. Helena, and other must-sees while in town.

White Sulphur Springs

Montana might be big on outdoor sports and general adventure, but the entirety of your trip doesn’t have to fall into this category. Case in point: White Sulphur Springs, a city named for its mineralized hot springs. Patrick calls it the “perfect getaway,” and recommends planning a ski weekend at Showdown Montana that includes a stay at The Edith Hotel and a soak in the hot springs at Spa Hot Springs Motel .

It's a busy week for central bankers in the UK and abroad as interest rate-setters in London, Washington and Tokyo meet to decide on the cost of borrowing in their countries. 

They all have the same goal: to bring down inflation and keep it low at 2%. 

The key numbers guiding the Bank of England in their decision come tomorrow when official inflation data for August is released. 

The consumer price index (CPI) measure of inflation is expected to stay at 2.2%, according to economists polled by Reuters - the same rate as July. 

A CPI reading of 2.2% would mean that prices are on average 2.2% more expensive than a year ago and the inflation rate remained higher than in June and May.

Other measures of inflation, such as core which excluded volatile food and energy, are projected to tick up from 3.3% to 3.5%,  which will likely move members of the Bank's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) to hold rates at 5%.

Traders currently bet there's a 36% chance of the Bank cutting interest rates when they meet on Thursday, odds that could change. 

Just 6% of Britons who took a staycation this summer planned to use an electric vehicle (EV), a new survey has found.

"Range anxiety" is the main factor, with more than a third (38%) worrying the vehicle will not have enough battery charge to reach its destination and more than half (52%) have concerns about the lack of charging points.

It means that drivers, despite knowing it is the greener option, are reluctant to use EVs on longer journeys.

Ovo Energy, which runs Charge Anywhere within its Ovo Charge app for all EV drivers – not just Ovo customers – directing users to 34,000 public chargers across the UK and 400,000 across Europe, acknowledges there is more to be done to boost confidence in the system.

Alex Thwaites, director of EVs at Ovo, said his firm's app attempted to provide drivers with "peace of mind", with access to live updates and availability of chargers.

A new YouGov poll for the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) has found petrol car drivers have a limited understanding of how electric cars are currently charged, mistakenly assume that EV drivers regularly run out of charge and underestimate the savings that EVs generate over running a combustion engine car.

More than five in 10 petrol car drivers (54%) think EV drivers run out of charge at least once a year but in reality, 82% of EV drivers report never running out of charge.

The energy secretary has been urged to tackle the UK's "dire" smart meter rollout.

In a letter to Ed Miliband, MoneySavingExpert (MSE) founder Martin Lewis warns that "too many smart meters don’t work" and "word of mouth is often saying 'don’t bother'."

He suggests firms shift their targets away from overall installations to looking at how many "working" smart meters there are.

In a blog on his website, Mr Lewis wrote: "Complaints about smart meters are through the roof. Too many people tell me theirs are broken. Others refuse to have them and feel companies are forcing them.

"I'm generally in favour of the concept of smart meters, though I think the way they've been rolled out since the start has been dire."

He said many who don't have a smart meter are willing to pay more to avoid getting one.

A survey by MSE also found 19% of households with a smart meter said theirs did not work - this included problems with in-home displays, incorrect data on tarrifs or prepay top-ups not working correctly.

Mr Lewis wrote: "Too many resources are focused on installations, not repairs, leaving more existing meters not working properly. Repairs can be slow, if they happen at all, leaving consumers frustrated and at risk of mis-billing and further problems."

Earlier this year, Citizens Advice warned that millions of households were missing out on the benefits of their smart meter due to faults and poor service from their supplier.

Nearly 1,400 OVO customers will receive compensation after the energy firm was hit with a £2.37m penalty for complaint handling failures.

Energy regulator Ofgem said the firm, one of the UK's largest energy companies, will pay more than £378,000 directly to affected customers.

Due to the "severity of consumer detriment", OVO has also paid £2m to the Energy Industry Voluntary Redress Scheme - a fund supporting customers and developing energy projects.

Jacqui Gehrmann, from Ofgem, said OVO "failed to adequately protect and respond to their customers when it was needed most".

"This is not acceptable," she added.

OVO is Britain's fourth-biggest household energy supplier and has about four million customers.

More than 1.7 million households do not plan on turning on their hearing this winter - nearly double the amount who said they did not heat their homes last year.

More than half of those polled for Uswitch (55%) blamed rising living costs while 25% of over-65s said their decision followed the loss of winter fuel payments.

Another one million households will wait until December to turn it on, the survey also found.

The average date of the big switch on this year (according to the people polled) will be 6 October, almost a week earlier than last year's 12 October (which was the most common date in 2023 the 2,000 people surveyed said they were turning it on).

But almost six million have already started warming their homes after last week's cold snap.

What temperature should you set your thermostat?

The survey suggests households will set their thermostat at an average 19.4C this winter, up from 19.3C a year ago.

The Energy Saving Trust estimates that people can save 10% on their heating bills for every degree they turn down their thermostats, although it is recommended that people do not set them lower than 18C.

More than one in six households (17%) are planning to set their thermostats below 18C to save money, while 8% plan to heat their home to 17°C, and 11% to 16C or lower.

At the other end of the spectrum, almost four million households are setting their thermostats at or above 22C.

A priest has avoided jail after he was caught on CCTV stealing from his own church's donation pot.

Fortunato Pantisano, 44, took around £200 cash from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Fulham, west London, on 7 January.

He had been suspended from service at the time of the offence.

He was seen on footage entering an office at the church around lunchtime and taking two plates of money that had been donated, Westminster Magistrates' Court heard.

Pantisano pleaded not guilty but was convicted after a trial last month.

He has continued to deny the offence. A pre-sentence report said it is likely he will not be able to practise as a Catholic priest again.

Pantisano, of Harewood Avenue in Westminster, was sentenced to 20 weeks' imprisonment suspended for two years at the same court on Tuesday.

The judge said a suspended sentence was appropriate given the defendant had no previous convictions, presented no real risk to the public and had a "strong prospect of rehabilitation".

Amazon has told its office workers they may no longer work from home except in extenuating circumstances.

It comes as Jonathan Reynolds, the UK's business secretary, said flexible working contributes to productivity, employee resilience, and staff retention.

Workers need to be judged on outcomes and "not a culture of presenteeism," Mr Reynolds told The Times.

What is Amazon doing?

Amazon has described the policy change as returning to the way it worked before the COVID-19 pandemic - being in the office five days a week except for special circumstances.

A letter from Amazon chief executive Andy Jassy said those situations included when staff or their children were sick, house emergencies, travelling for work or coding "in a more isolated environment".

Some staff who had been given exceptional permission to work remotely will remain able to do so.

The changes will take effect on 2 January next year as Mr Jassy said the company understands staff have "set up their personal lives in such a way that returning to the office consistently five days per week will require some adjustments".

Forget CPI for measuring inflation, as brat summer fades into a demure and mindful autumn, we bid farewell to iced coffees and hello to their spicy seasonal counterparts.

But even fan favourite, the Pumpkin Spice Latte, is not immune to inflationary pressures.

Card payment experts SumUp have analysed this year's autumnal menus from the four leading coffee shops (Starbucks, Costa, Greggs and Pret) to find out which offers the best value for money.

It may have started with Starbucks, but Greggs took the crown with the cheapest Pumpkin Spice Latte, bucking national trends and actually decreasing the cost by 20p since last year. Their offering is 53% cheaper than Pret and Starbucks. 

Greggs has also added 10 new menu items - including Pumpkin Spice Latte doughnuts.

With the price for a regular Pumpkin Spice Latte now at £4.65, Pret a Manger had the largest increase year-on-year - with a 37% markup. 

Costa has rejected the Pumpkin Spice Latte entirely, with the comparison instead looking at their Maple Hazel Latte. 

However, this Pumpkin Spice alternative is still 6% more expensive than Starbucks and Pret a Manger’s offerings and a whole £1 more from last year's starting price - a 25% markup.

With the exception of Pret, the coffee giants began launching their autumn menus in August, despite starting in September just two years ago. 

Why are seasonal drinks so expensive?

Bart Visser, from SumUp, says high operating costs, quality of ingredients and supply chain issues are to blame for rising coffee prices.

"Seasonal menus frequently see a markup in price due to their special ingredients and limited availability," he said.

"Customers are willing to pay a premium for these items, and seasonal menus often come with targeted marketing campaigns, themed decorations, and special promotions. 

"These efforts can be costly, and businesses may recoup these costs through higher prices."

Regular Sky News readers will have had this morning's news yesterday. 

Today Flutter Entertainment, the owner of Paddy Power, confirmed Mark Kleinman's story that it is buying the consumer operations of Playtech, the gambling technology group. 

Flutter's share price was up 0.59% following the announcement. 

The biggest riser on the UK's benchmark stock index (the FTSE 100 list of most valuable companies on the London Stock Exchange) was Kingfisher, the owner of B&Q and Screwfix. 

The 6.3% increase in its share price is part of the overall FTSE 100 0.76% rise. 

The more UK-based FTSE 250 index, of the 101st to 350th most valuable London-listed firms, rose 0.5%. 

With the looming US interest rate cut tomorrow, the dollar has remained weak - good news for people heading to the US from the UK and for people paying for goods in dollars. A pound is back buying $1.32. 

Against the euro, sterling buys €1.187.

Oil has remained around the $72 mark. A barrel of the benchmark Brent crude oil costs $72.50 - not much more than the $70 low that, until last week, was not seen since 2021.

Metro Bank is set to axe hundreds of jobs as it pushes ahead with an £80m cost-cutting plan, according to reports.

The beleaguered lender will announce 300 roles are going within the business operations, IT and support divisions, according to the Daily Mail .

It comes just months after the bank said it would axe 1,000 roles (equivalent to 22% of the workforce) and scrap seven-day trading in all its branches. These latest cuts come in addition.

The bank has been hit by a series of blunders, including accounting errors and leadership changes.

It has struggled to recover from a blunder in 2019 that saw £900m in loans misclassified, sparking an investor and deposit outflow at the time.

Since then, its share price has plunged from £287 down to £65.50 today, a dip of 77%.

In July it sold its £2.5bn residential mortgage book to NatWest after a deal with Barclays fell through last year.

The bank, which was founded in 2010, has about 2.7 million customers and 75 branches in the UK.

It has looked to capitalise on public anger over high street branch closures by mainstream banks since the financial crisis by focusing purely on branch services - opening seven days per week.
