Sidste chance for de ryttere, som ikke kan vinde i de høje bjerge eller enkeltstarten på sidstedagen i Nice.

Så der vil være rigtig mange hold, som vil jagte udbruddet og se, om de kan redde deres Tour de France. De store sprinterhold vil prøve at holde tingene under kontrol, hvilket kan være svært i en tredje uge, hvor man måske ikke har fuldt holde længere, og rytterne er meget trætte.

I morgen går den rigtige finale ind med to store bjergetaper og den sidste enkeltstart til Nice.

-Pogacar and Vingegaard got away on the Col de Spandelles but then Pogacar crashed on the descent

Bonjour and welcome to the Cyclingnews live coverage of stage 18 of the 2022 Tour de France.

As we get up to speed, the riders are signing on in Lourdes, ready for this final mountain stage of the 2022 Tour de France.

It's a huge final day in the Pyrenees and so much could happen on the three big climbs of the stage. 

As always, we'll have full live coverage of all the action.

Sadly two more riders are out of the Tour due to COVID-19. Movistar team announced that their road captain Imanol Erviti tested positive for the virus this morning. 

Damiano Caruso  also headed home after struggling in the Pyrenees, with Bahrain Victorious revealing he was also positive for COVID-19.

Erviti is the first Movistar rider to catch COVID-19 during the 2022 Tour de France. It is only the second time in his long career as a domestique and road captain that he has failed to finish a Grand Tour. He has started 28 Grand Tours and only failed to finish the 2012 Tour de France. 

It is the first time Caruso has abandoned a Grand Tour after completing 15 three-week races.

Ineos is next on stage. They still have a full team of eight riders despite some illness. 

They again wear yellow helmets during the stage as leaders of the team classification.

Groupama-FDJ are on stage next. They will be hoping that David Gaudu can keep fighting for a top-five place overall. 

Nairo Quintana is only 4 seconds ahead of him in fourth and so the two will be locked in their own race on the climb to Hautacam.

This is today's stage. It includes the mighty Aubisque, the Col de Spandelles and then the finish at Hautacam.

We're 15 minutes from the start of the stage.

Jonas Vingegaard is on stage with his Jumbo-Visma teammates. The Dane is eating a ice lolly to try to stay cool.  

It's currently 28C in Lourdes but cooler at the Hautacam finish, which was above the clouds earlier this morning.   

The sign-on podium is in the centre of Lourdes and several riders will be looking for a miracle today.

They include Tadej Pogacar, who is on stage now.

It's going to be tough but i'm going to give my all," Pogacar says when it is pointed out today is his last chance to pull back time on Vingegaard. 

After losing Rafa Majka before Thursday's stage, Pogacar has just three teammates: 

Marc Hirschi, Mikkel Bjerg and Brandon McNulty. 

The riders are starting to line-up for the roll out. 

It's time for the pre-tace fist-pumps.

The riders face a short 3.1km neutralised sector. 

140 riders start the stage. 

Also missing is Chris Froome, who announced he has COVID-19 just before the roll out.

The flag drops the stage starts! 

The road climbs straight away and there are attacks.

Froome published a brief message, expressing his disappointment but saying he plans to ride the Vuelta a Espana.

Another fast start and another Wout van Aert attack! 

He was joined by Neilson Powless but is now solo. 

Riders are chasing van Aert to try to form the break of the day.

Van Aert is still 10 seconds ahead of the chasers. Jumbo clearly want him up the road to help Vingegaard later in the mountains.

The intermediate sprint comes after 58km of valley roads and so van Aert can score more points but he has already secured victory.  

Politt and Teuns are chasing, but so is Tiesj Benoot, also of Jumbo-Visma. 

Jumbo seem to want to give it back to UAE. 

Their attacks have put Mikkel Bjerg in difficulty.

After a 13km attack, van Aert is caught. 

Who is next to go?

We have more attacks. 

Van Aert goes again! 

Is he attacking to hurt UAE and Bjerg? 

Stan Dewulf of AG2R is up front but is marked by Christophe Laporte and others.  

The speed is super high from the very start. The average speed is over 50km/h. 

The race is fluid and ever changing. 

EF are especially aggressive today and in a small group off the front with Laporte.

Laporte, De Wulf, Leknessund, Vermeersch, Bissegger and Matthews are on the attack. 

Schachmann and Van Poppel are trying to go across but it's a big task.

The gap is only 10 seconds. 

Cofidis are lead the chase to try to keep Geschke in contention for the KOM points on the first big climb. 

He needs to score some points in the hope of keeping the polka-dot jersey all the way to Paris.

Gruppo compatto after 33km fast racing.

Teams and riders know that this is their last chance to win a stage.

Bjerg is still chasing in the team cars. He's suffering but slowly getting back to the peloton. But how much will the chase cost him?

The pace is so high the police motorbikes are being caught in the action.

Now we have a new attack of 15 riders.

Geschke is trying to go across again. 

Ciccone is also in the attack and is a rival to Geschke. 

Bettiol is there too, plus Benoot for Jumbo.  

The USA's Matteo Jorgenson is up front too. 

Geschke did not make it across and there are more attacks. 

A group is closing down the attack. 

The peloton seems to be easing up.

There are 27 rider in the front group. 

They lead by 35 seconds but Geschke and van Aert are still trying to inspire the peloton to chase.

Benoot ups the pace as van Aert drags a small group across to them. 

One day we'll know just how much van Aert was riding for himself and how much for the Jumbo team. 

Van Aert wants to join the group to take the Laruns intermediate sprint in 10km or so.

Perhaps he wants to set a new green jersey points total in Paris.

A squeeze in the road ends with Jack Bauer (BikeExchange - Jayco) crashing into a team car. 

Fortunately he had slowed somewhat but he still hit the UAE car.  

Team DSM ride Nils Eekhoff also crashed just ahead, sparking the slam on.  

Bauer and Eekhoff both need medical treatment from the doctor's car. 

Interestingly, QuickStep are now chasing the attack. 

They want to keep Jakobsen up front as much as possible. If the break goes away, that makes it harder for Jakobsen to finish inside the time limit. 

Interestingly, Vingegaard comes up to ask QuickStep to ask what they're doing. 

He wants his teammates up the road, so wants the gap to out.  

The rider have a stiff tailwind but they've raced at 49.61km/h for the opening hours. 

All on stage 18 of the Tour. Ouch. 

The Laruns sprint is coming and then the riders hit the Col d'Aubisque. 

Van Aert surges to score maximum points at the intermediate sprint. 

That's another 20 points in the bag.    

Will van Aert ease up? 

No. He stays up front as other riders push on. Why give up a free ride? 

van Aert works on the front but the peloton is only 15 seconds back as the Col d'Aubisque starts in earnest. 

The Col d'Aubisque is 16.4km long at 7.1% and so shake out the break and the peloton. 

Indeed the sprinters and rouleurs in the break are dropping back. 

Jumbo have taken control in the peloton, with Nathan Van Hooydonck and Sepp Kuss on the front for Vingegaard.  

The peloton is at 1:00 as the lower slopes of the Col d'Aubisque.

The sperinters are slipping back from the peloton. There will soon be calls of  'gruppetto, grupetto,' a call for unity so that they ride together and all finish inside the time limit.

Jakobsen makes Tour de France time cut by 15 seconds

This is the Col d'Aubisque. It is Hors Category and oe of the historic climbs of the Tour.

7km to go the summit of the Col d'Aubisque.

Pogacar takes a bidon and pours the cold water over him. Kuss makes sure Pogacar does not open a gap.  

The peloton is 1:50 down on the 22 attackers, with Louis Meintjes in the middle at 1:00 with a teammate. 

Simon Geschke's hopes of winning the polka-dot jersey seem over. He has lost contact with the yellow jersey group. 

He needed to score points on the Col d'Aubisque.

The pace is steady in the peloton and so riders keep jumping up the road.

These are the 20 riders up front. 

Giulio Ciccone, Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo) Tiesj Benoot, Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma), Bob Jungels (Ag2r-Citröen), Max Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe), Enric Mas, Carlos Verona, Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar), Valentin Madouas, Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ), Alexey Lutsenko (Astana Qazaqstan), Andreas Leknessund (Team DSM), Rigoberto Uran (EF Education-EasyPost).

Other riders have been dropped. 

There's a moment of study and control on the higher slopes of the Col d'Aubisque.

Vingegaard has Nathan Van Hooydonck and Sepp Kiss with him, with Pogacar has McNulty and Thomas has Yates.

Jumbo is slowly letting the break go away on the Col d'Aubisque.

Van Aert drags the attackers to the top of the Col d'Aubisque. 

Ciccone jumps away to score 20 KOM points. He now has 61, three ahead of Geschke, who was hoping to defend the polka dot jersey.

Meintjes summits some 50 seconds later, while Neilson Powless is at 1:30. 

The peloton passes the Col d'Aubisque at 3:15.

The road now descends through the trees but the views across the high Pyrenees are spectacular. 

Of course, the riders do not have a lot of energy to enjoy the views.

Meintjes is 1:10 behind the attack as he tries to go across and perhaps gain time in the GC.

He's seventh in the virtual GC but this is a big effort by the South African. 

The riders are on the exposed high roads of the Haute Pyrenee. Spectacular. 

Arkea are on the front of the peloton on the fast descent, they're defending Quintana's 4th place overall. 

This is a twisting 15km descent and Pogacar has joined Arkea up front to up the pace. 

Vingegaard is forced to go after him.

Meintjes and Hamilton have caught up with Mas in the descent of col du Soulor.

There are again races within the race today, as riders battle for places in the top ten as well as the stage and the overall victory.

The end of the descent can only mean one thing. It's time to climb again. 

The riders start the steep and narrow Col de Spandelles. It is little more than a farm track.   

Here we go! 

Big Nut McNulty is back on the front as UAE take control of the peloton.

His pace will surely test everyone. 

Van Aert is still in the break and still riding on the front. He wants to be up there for Vingegaard later on. 

But after such a big effort, will be able to do anything later? 

Geraint Thomas moves across the road and asks 2 Jumbo soigneurs for drinks. Both unsportingly refuse. That's not nice.

McNulty's pacing is eating into the gap on the break and spitting riders out of the back. 

Vlasov is struggling, Pidcock has already been dropped. 

Vingegaard has Kuss and Thomas is there but Bardet and Gaudu seem to be suffering.

These are the riders in the yellow jersey group. 

onas Vingegaard, Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma), Tadej Pogacar, Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates), Geraint Thomas, Adam Yates (Ineos Grenadiers), Nairo Quintana (Arkéa-Samsic), David Gaudu, Michael Storer (Groupama-FDJ), Romain Bardet (Team DSM) and Alexander Vlasov (Bora-Hansgrohe).

However Yates is also struggling to stay in contact. 

Pogacar ups the pace and blows the group apart. 

Now it's just him and Vingegaard.

They quickly blast up to Meintjes. 

They're only 2:20 down on the attackers, which has also split.

Pogacar eases and so Kuss gets back on.

Behind Thomas chases with Quintana, with Gaudu a few metres behind.

Pogacar and Vingegaard still have 5km to climb.

Up front van Aert is leading the attack with Pinot and Dani Martinez of Ineos.

Thomas gets back on. Quintana too.

But Bam! Pogacar attacks again!

Vingegaard is on him and Kuss is there too.

Attack number 3 from Pogacar!

Vingegaard is on him and Thomas too. 

Now Thomas attacks! 

There are 3km for the GC to climb on the Col de Spandelles.

Thomas leads by 50 metres but Kuss is pacing Vingegaard. 

Pog goes again!

Ufff! Pogacar and Vingegaard blast past Thomas! 

Vingegaard had to suffer to get onto Pogacar's wheel that time. 

Is that a sign he's starting to suffer?

Pogacar's normal pace is not super fast, with Thomas able to peg the gap. 

Up front van Aert is trying to stay away so he can help Vingegaard in some way.

It remains to be seen if van Art can actually do anything to help on the climb to the finish.

Pinot is with van Aert and could try to win the stage. 

There is also the nasty, technical descent. 

It is 18km long to the foot of the Hautacam. 

Van Aert is the first to the top of the Col de Spandelles. 

He can't win the polka-dot jersey, so what was he doing? 

Attack again from Pogacar!!

They are just 1:35 down at the summit. 

Will Pogacar attack on the descent too? 

Thomas is 30 seconds down at the summit.  

Ohhhhh! 

Vingegaard wobbles on the descent. He puts his foot out to stay up! 

Pogacar opens a gap but Vingegaard closes quickly.

Crash Pogacar!!! 

He's up and riding but they're both taking risks. 

Pogacar went wide into the gravel and then lost control of his bike.

Vingegaard waits for him! 

That's incredibly sporting and they shake hands. 

Pogacar didn't crash at speed but has a hole in his shorts and some road rash under his thigh.  

Pogacar calls for his team car. 

Does he need a new bike? 

He talks to his team car but does not change his bike. But he was animated and something is wrong.

The pace of Pogacar and Vingegaard has slowed, so Thomas is only 10 seconds behind now.

Soon after the two shook hands, Pogacar thanking Vingegaard for waiting for him.

The riders are at the foot of Hautacam and Thomas and others join Vingegaard and Pogacar. 

Thomas calls his team car.

The Hautacam is famous for several previous finishes. 

Today's race will only add to the history.  

Up front are van Aert, Pinot and Dani Martinez. 

All three would be incredible stage winner.  

This is Hautacam. That steep, black section explains why it is such a hard climb.

It is 13.6km long at 7.7%. It takes about 40 minutes to climb. 

The Vingegaard group is 2:30 down on van Aert, Pinot and Martinez.

Behind  Gaudu and Quintana are locked in a battle for fourth and fifth.

In the attack, Pinot covers his head and body with cold water. He has been dancing on the pedals and seems keen to attack van Aert and Martinez. 

Kuss is pacing Vingegaard on the last major climb of the Tour. He is escorting him nearer and nearer to victory.

Gaudu attacks Quintana with teammate Madouas and they manage to get away.  

Thomas is still with Kuss, Vingegaard and Pogacar.

Will Pogacar soon try another attack? They're only 1:00 the Pinot attack now. 

Van Aert must know that his own teammates are chasing him as Kuss sets a fast pace.

He attacks and only Martinez can go with him.  

Pinot seemed to crack mentally there. 

Kuss is again doing an vital team role today. Part of Vingegaard's eventual success is his. 

Behind everyone else is fighting to limit their losses and hold their GC position. 

This is a dramatic day of Grand Tour racing.

Thomas is dropped! 

There is still 7km to climb to the finish. 

Van Aert and Martinez lead Kuss, Vingegaard and Pogacar by just 30 seconds. 

Pogacar wants to win the stage but Vingegaard perhaps also wants to win in the yellow jersey.

Lutsenko and Verona are with Thomas. They were in the early break and have survived this far.  

Everyone is just trying to ride in and limit any losses. 

Up front Martinez and van Aert after joined by Kuss, Vingegaard and Pogacar.

Incredibly van Aert is able to pace Vingegaard and Pogacar. 

Thomas is 50 seconds back. 

Gaudu had gained a minute on his GC rivals Quintana.

Pinot is pacing his younger teammate after being in the attack. 

Pogacar is suffering! He's dropped!  

He's already lost 10 seconds!

Van Aert is doing some incredible pacing for Vingegaard here. 

Now Vingegaard goes solo! 

Van Aert moves off and he is totally spent. He gave his all. 

Yet he manages to sit on Pogacar as he chases Vingegaard.

But the young Dane is strong and opening a gap with every pedal stroke. 

Vingegaard leads Pogcar by 35 seconds.

He is going to win the stage in yellow and surely cement his overall success.

The crowds are huge near the summit. 

Stay safe Jonas!

Fortunately he is into the barriered sector.

Pogacar's white jersey is open as he suffers and chases.

But we've seen a very human Pogacar this year. He's lost 40 seconds to Vingegaard now.

Vingegaard has extended his virtual GC lead to 3:00.

This is the moment Pogacar cracked.

Vingegaard is close to winning the stage and so the 2022 Tour.  

Vingegaard reaches the finish at Hautacam and wins the stage solo.  

He's 1:00 ahead of Pogacar. 

Chapeau! 

Jonas Vingegaard blows a kiss and punches the air.

Pogacar finished 1:03 behind.

Wout Van Aert (Jumbo Visma) is named as the winner of the Prix Antargaz de la Combativité.

He also finishes third on the stag at 2:10 and celebrates too. 

Thomas finishes fourth at 2:53 with another brave, gritty ride. 

Gaudu is just behind him and so secures fourth overall.

Today's time cut is given at 40:47. It will be a real battle for Fabio Jakobsen and the other sprinters. 

In the podium area, Pogacar again congratulates Vingegaard and then cools down on the rollers a little despondently. He knows his chance of winning the 2022 Tour have gone.

This is how Pogacar finished. He gave his all but Vingegaard and Jumbo-Visma were stronger.

Jonas Vingegaard spoke about why he wanted to win the stage in the yellow jersey.

"It's incredible. This morning I said to my girlfriend and daughter I wanted to win for them and I did. I'm really really happy and proud I won for them. This one is really for my two girls at home," he said soon after the finish.

"I was just happy it finally ended. It was incredibly hard. I'm also really happy I won the stage. Now there's still two more days to come before we are in Paris so we need to keep focus and we'll take it day by day again."

He also explained what happened when Pogacar crashed.

"I think he missed the corner and then he went down into the gravel and tried to steer it out and the bike disappeared under him. Then I waited for him." Vingegaard explained. 

"I have to thank all my teammates, they're incredible. You see Wout van Aert dropping Tadej Pogacar in the end, Sepp Kuss was incredible, everyone was incredible, Tiejs, Christophe, Nathan, they were all incredible. 

"Thanks so much to my teammates, I could never done this without them."

Incredibly Wout van Aert climbed to 22nd on GC with his ride today. 

He also has Saturday's time trial to add another victory and more time.

Adam Yates has been sick for several days but fought to stay in the top ten.

Louis Meintjes also rode well and is now sixth overall.

Geraint Thomas again fought all the way to the finish. He is still third overall, at 8:00.

In a hugely successful day for Vingegaard and Jumbo-Visma, he also took the polka-dot jersey after Simon Geschke was unable to get into the early break and so score as few points to defend his narrow lead.

Geschke was in tears when he reached the finish.

Vingegaard soars to Hautacam win on Tour de France stage 18

MVP today was Wout van Aert.

Wout van Aert was immense today, going in the break again, scoring more green jersey points, staying away on the high mountains and then being there to help drop Pogacar and set-up Vingegaard.

He was naturally voted the Combativité of the stage and probably will win the Combativité prize for the whole Tour.

Vingegaard strengthened his overall race lead by winning the stage.

Fabio Jakobsen arrived at finish with a good margin 36:40 after Vingegaard but inside the 40:46 time limit. 

Friday's stage to Cahors is flat but there's a risk of crosswind all day and a break will want to try to holds off the sprinters but he is now set to make it to Paris and also sprint for the stage in on the Champs Elysees.

And breathe. After a wild two days in the Alps, the sprinters come to the fore again on Stage 18 at the Tour de France. Jonas Vingegaard need only stay upright on the remaining four stages and he will surely win a second yellow jersey, with the Dane holding a 7'35 lead over Tadej Pogacar in the general classification. So how can you watch the action unfold on Thursday? Here's all you need to know.

Jonas Vingegaard speaks.

It’s incredible. This morning, I said to my girlfriend and my daughter that I wanted to win for them and I did. This one is for my two girls back home. I was just happy that it finally ended. I was just happy it finally ended. It was incredibly hard. I’m also really happy I won the stage. Now there’s still two more days to come before we are in Paris so we need to keep focus and we’ll take it day by day again. I am so really happy they I won the stage, now there is more days to come. I think [Pogacar] missed the corner and then he went down into the gravel and tried to steer it out and the bike disappeared under him. Then I waited for him. I have to thank all my teammates, they’re incredible. You see Wout van Aert dropping Tadej Pogacar in the end, Sepp Kuss was incredible, everyone was incredible, Tiejs, Christophe, Nathan, they were all incredible. Thanks so much to my teammates, I could never done this without them.

Just like his compatriot , Bjarne Riis, in 1996, Jonas Vingegaard wins on the Hautacam, cracking a champion that had previously seemed impregnable. And that moment on the descent of the Col de Spandelles, when Pogacar came down, and Vingegaard waited for him, was a historic moment. Not least because Vingegaard had seemed to lose his chain before and Pogacar had attacked. As it turned out, Vingegaard was the better and stronger man, and Pogacar refused to attack more on the descent, telling his team car so.

...Gaudu comes just behind Thomas , whose third place looks assured, if nothing goes too awry on Saturday’s time trial. Quite some ride from Thomas to finish fourth on that stage.

Pogacar comes in, his shirt open, blowing in the mountain air , he battles on bravely, his head sinking as he crossed the line. He got knocked down, and got up again, but he couldn’t overturn such a strong and inspired rival. Behind him, Van Aert comes in, having dominated the stage from start to finish and set up his teammate to win the stage, and probably Le Tour.

Jonas Vingegaard wins the 18th stage on the Hautacam!

The Dane is surely - surely - destined to win the Tour now. He does so having cracked Pogacar, something that until this year’s Tour was considered impossible. And today, perhaps more importantly, he did so having shown such sportsmanship when Pogacar crashed on that descent. What a moment, what a win. A brilliant ride from Vingegaard.

1km to go: Gaudu tries to drop Martinez and Thomas but ends up dragging them to the Sepp Kuss group, as Vingegaard looks back to see how far he has left Pogacar down the road. The flamme rouge arrives, and the agony will soon be converted to elation.

1.5km to go: Gaudu gets up to Thomas, and needs to take three minutes off him to claim third in GC. Next year, Gaudu may be France’s great hope. This time, it’s dazzling, it’s dynamic, it’s Denmark, as the gap between Pogacar and Vingegaard opens up to 40 seconds.

2.5km to go: Geraint Thomas needs a bike change, though has Martinez, his Ineos teammate, for company at least as Gaudu closes within seconds of him. That’s for the minor places since Vingegaard has smashed the rest of them, with 35 seconds on Pogacar, the rest almost in reverse as they climb the Hautacam.

3.5km to go: Pogacar and Van Aert join up, wordless between them, the gap to Vingegaard at 20 seconds, though it may as well be an hour. Pogacar has no way back. There will be no third successive Tour, barring an accident (or Covid).

Pogacar has cracked!

The green jersey of Van Aert leads the yellow of Vingegaard, ahead of the white jersey of Pogacar. Thomas is still a minute down, and Gaudu is on his tail. But here’s the moment the yellow jersey is decided, and Van Aert’s pacemaking leads to Pogacar being unable to live with the Jumbo-Visma pair. He drops off the back, and is immediately distanced. Vingegaard and Van Aert have the stage and the Tour in their grasp.

5km to go: Geraint Thomas starting to lose nearly a minute on the two leaders, while David Gaudu is going to get fourth from Nairo Quintana if it stays this way. Looking back down the road from the green jersey, the yellow jersey is visible, and Van Aert drops back take over from Kuss as pacemaker. Vingegaard will take polka if he finishes first or second at the summit. Poor Simon Geschke back in the grupetto is set to lose his prized possession.

6km to go: Van Aert seems to slow up, Martinez clinging on behind him, the gap at 36 seconds, with Kuss finally running out of gas. The longer this group stays together, the less chance Pogacar has to attack. But the plan seems to be for Vingegaard to attack. He has the manpower around him to engineer that but Jumbo-Visma may be setting up Van Aert for the stage win, too. They have plenty of cards to play.

7km to go: Thomas is dropping off Kuss, Vingegaard and Pogacar, as that trio speeds uop the Hautacam, passing a stricken Thibaut Pinot. The French are not going to end their stage-win drought here.

8km to go: Van Aert flips his elbow, and asks Martinez to do his turn. The Colombian acquiesces. Van Aert wants polka dot as well as the green jersey he can already call his own.

Van Aert attacks!

9km to go: The pace Kuss is riding along may soon see the GC group catch up the trio at the front. It’s running Pogacar into the red zone, draining his ability to chase down Vingegaard, to mount another of those wildcat attacks. Van Aert though decides to go off the front, and with that, Pinot’s chance looks to have gone, and it’s only Martinez who can stay with him.

10km to go: Pinot asks his fellow travellers up the top to race alongside him, to take a turn. He drenches himself in water, but Van Aert and Martinez sit grim-faced behind him as he tries to ride them away. Is he bluffing? Does he have the legs? Behind him down the mountain, Sepp Kuss is pacing Vingegaard along and it’s Pogacar’s turn to hold the wheel. The gap is closing, Pinot’s pace is far slower than that of Kuss. Louis Meintjes will not be troubling Geraint Thomas for the podium; he’s toiling back down the hill.

12km to go: Meintjes goes off the back, but only to collect a bottle ahead of the climb. Thomas will be watching him like a hawk. Benoot and Kuss sit up the front of that group, Jumbo-Visma setting the pace. Up at the top, Pinot has a turn off the front, testing the legs of Martinez and Van Aert. Two races at one here, though Benoot’s day is done.

Here comes the Hautacam

Dani Martinez, Thibaut Pinot and Wout van Aert reach the bottom of the hill, and there is a stage win, a polka jersey and perhaps, in Van Aert’s case, the chance to land a GC win for Vingegaard. Louis Meintjes, chasing down Geraint Thomas’s third place, has joined the group of GC contenders.

15km to go: Up ahead, Van Aert, with two minutes on the chasing GC contenders, has a chance of the polka-dot jersey if he wins the stage. So too does Thibaut Pinot, to rescue something from a disappointing Tour. Vingegaard and Pogacar are joined soon enough by Kuss, Benoot and Thomas, who continues to hang on limpet-like to his place on the podium.

17km to go: All credit goes to Vingegaard and Pogacar seems to recognise that, even if his team aren’t so empathetic. They reach the bottom of the hill, and soon enough the Hautacam will beckon. Their slow pace down the descent has pulled backed in the likes of Kuss and Tiesj Benoot, in Jumbo jerseys, to push Vingegaard along.

22km to go: Pogacar is on his radio, possibly requesting a new bike, his steed looks to have failed him. And the team care comes alongside him, offering a bottle after a short discussion. He seems to be angry with his team, as if they are asking him to attack someone he has just enjoyed a moment of brotherhood with. Ironically enough, Eurosport have turned to Alberto Contador for expert summarising. He describes it as a “historic moment”, but then says falling off is part of the race and the risk.

Pogacar crashes on the descent!

28km to go: Oh dear, that was almost very nasty, as Vingegaard almost comes a cropper, but then Pogacar actually comes off, and there will be road rash. Pogacar gets back on, gingerly, though rides like a demon to get back on, and Vingegaard sits up for his rival, and when they meet, there is a touch of hands

This was no Andy Schleck and Alberto Contador scenario. There is clear respect between the riders and they ease off in their chase down the hill, both recognising the danger involved. What a moment of sportsmanship.

33km to go: Pogacar’s pace means Tiesj Benoot, who had gone up the road to assist his leader, can’t keep up, and gets cracked. Meintjes, who had designs on a podium finish, with Thomas behind him on the road, also fails to live with the speed. Sepp Kuss can also offer little more in the way of assistance.

Van Aert, Dani Martinez and Thibaut Pinot are the three riders who go over top of the climb, Van Aert taking the mountain points and speeding down the Col de Spandelles. Through a hairpin bend covered by trees, Pogacar, with Vingegaard on his tail, go over the brow and they can begin their descent. The Hautacam is where it will be decided.

Thomas and Pogacar both attack

35km to go: Pogacar, once Kuss joins them, is hosed down by a rider he passes by, and then once Thomas joins the group, speeds on, and tries his best to shed Kuss, who then catches up again. The aim seems to be the speed up and slow down to shed Vingegaard and Kuss, in a game of cat and mouse. Then he slows down, allows Kuss and Thomas to rejoin him. Then off goes Thomas, up the hill, and stretching the field. Vingegaard looks highly stressed by all this happening around him. But can he be cracked? Pogacar goes off, and speeds past Thomas, with Vingegaard on the limit as he chases. Ciccone, the king of the mountains that never was, gets eaten up. The pace is relentless, deadly for those around them.

Pogacar goes off at the front!

38km to go: Van Aert has clearly been on the radio, and is doing his best to get over the top so that he can be there to aid Vingegaard later on. The result of that is that Ciccone has cracked, and that means Geschke, at the back of the field now and suffering, may yet find himself in polka at the end of the day. Ciccone is looking for Mollema, but no avail, the best-laid plans have been skewered by Van Aert. With McNulty winding it up in the GC group, the likes of Thomas and Yates are clinging on for dear life.

McNulty lifts the pace, but then sits back as his team leader goes away. Vingegaard reads the move, and sits off Pogacar, as the rest of the field is blown away as the dynamic duo power on. Pogacar is trying to isolate Vingegaard from his teammates. A glance back tells him Sepp Kuss can catch him up, and that he has Vingegaard out of the saddle, but that he is all on his own up this climb and then the Hautacam.

40km to go: It’s a 10km to go, a category one, and Ciccone and Mollema continue together, and Ciccone needs to finish fourth at the summit to overtake Geschke to take the mountains jersey. That looks more than likely. Back in the overall GC race, this is where the pack is likely to be split. Brandon McNulty takes up the pace, and attempts to do what he did yesterday, to shred the field. An early victim is Tom Pidcock, who soon spins off the back, unable to hold any wheels. McNulty blasts along, and plenty of bottles are being shed, with Jumbo-Visma’s people offering up bottles to their own men, but Geraint Thomas gets refused when asking for one. Gamesmanship. Vlasov’s dreams of climbing the GC are crushed by the pace of McNulty.

45km to go: The Col de Spandelles approaches, and perhaps this is the moment for Pogacar.

50km to go: The peloton is led over the Col du Soulor by Nathan Van Hooydonck of the Jumbotron, with Pogacar and Vingegaard at close quarters. Ciccone is having a dig off the front of the leading pack while Nairo Quintana, a daredevil descender, is leading an attack on the descent. Pogacar goes with him, Vingegaard asked to follow.

55km to go: Down they fly to another short climb. The view of the mountains at the top of the Col D’Aubisque was truly awesome but there is no time to rest, this is a nasty, exacting test of mettle. This is the Col du Soulor, offering very little respite. Louis Meintjes continues to attempt to bridge the gap to the leading pack, but is getting no help from the riders around him. Bauke Mollema, the veteran, leads Ciccone over the top, lending vital help to his Trek-Segafredo teammate. And the descent can resume.

Ciccone takes the mountain points on Col d'Aubisque

66km to go: Louis Meintjes, who came second on Alpe D’Huez, chases the leading group led by Van Aert, as the climb twists itself round and round the hairpin bends, and slowly. Meintjes is about a minute behind, and on GC virtuel, he has ridden himself up to fourth. Long way to go yet today. Adam Yates, of Team Ineos, has been suffering today but the slow pace of the peloton has allowed him back on.

The group who will begin their descent together: Giulio Ciccone, Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo) Tiesj Benoot, Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma), Bob Jungels (Ag2r-Citröen), Max Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe), Enric Mas, Carlos Verona, Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar), Valentin Madouas, Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ), Alexey Lutsenko (Astana Qazaqstan), Andreas Leknessund (Team DSM), Rigoberto Uran (EF Education-EasyPost).

Ciccone is unchallenged as he goes over the summit first, and is now within three points of Geschke, who is sweating blood back down the hill. Ciccone will fancy picking up some more on the next hill.

The other news is that the two motorbikes that caused the accident including Jack Bauer have both been kicked off Le Tour.

70km to go: Luis Leon Sanchez, a wily old fox, sets off from the front of the peloton, and eats the ground between him and Simon Geschke, who can’t stay with him and seems highly unlikely to be in polka tomorrow. A long long afternoon awaits, and there’s still around 5km of the Col d’Aubisque to go. The yellow jersey group is getting smaller, down to barer bones. Vingegaard is out of his saddle, no pressure as yet.

Col d’Aubisque (1,700m) is next up, with pine and birch forests, hairpin bends and spectacular views. We stop to attempt to cycle the pass (I give up part way up!). Nerves of steel are needed for the road cut into near-vertical cliffs around Col du Soulor (1,474m). It’s narrow, with a couple of tunnels, so you’ll need to drive it in the afternoon if your vehicle is over three tonnes (east to west in the morning). The scenery is sublime: the valley floor seems miles below – with nothing but a few concrete blocks between you – while impossible peaks loom above. This beautiful section of road is another favourite of diehard cyclists.

This climb has only ever been a summit finish three times, with the winners Bernard Labourdette in 1971, Stephen Roche in 1985 and Michael Rasmussen in 2007.

The latter was kicked out of the race while in yellow, only the second time that’s happened.

75km to go: Tom Pidcock, the hero of Alpe D’Huez, is up riding with Geschke, and has two teammates off him, only for Geschke to drop off the back. His polka dot jersey has been endangered by the Cofidis team’s failed efforts to get him up there, and his own lack of form. Giulio Ciccone, the Trek-Segafredo rider at the front, could close to within three points of Geschke if he takes the points at the top. All to play for. Jumbo-Visma have Tiesj Benoot up the front with Van Aert, to act as a launchpad if Vingegaard needs them later on. At the back of the field, Quick-Step are doing their best to save Fabio Jakobsen missing the time limit. He made it by just 15 seconds yesterday.

80km to go: The chase is on on that first big climb. Geschke gives chase as that 30-man group soon breaks up, 21 seconds behind, and back in the peloton, the only UAE rider sat with Pogacar is Brandon McNulty, who led his man right to the finish yesterday.

Van Aert wins the intermediate sprint!

84km to go: Some calm? Seems like it for now, with an intermediate sprint and climb soon to come and a sizeable group away in front, though the gap is only around 20 seconds.

The makeup, a movable feast was this: Tiesj Benoot (Jumbo-Visma), Dani Martinez and Luke Rowe (Ineos Grenadiers), Stan Dewulf (Ag2R-Citroen), Marco Haller (Bora-Hansgrohe), Mattia Cattaneo (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl), Matteo Jorgensen (Movistar), Matej Mohoric 9(Bahrain Victorious), Alberto Dainese (Team DSM), Alexandr Ribsushenko (Astana-Qazaqstan), Alberto Bettiol (EF Education-EasyPost), Amaury Capiot (Arkea-Samsic), Andreas Kron (Lotto Soudal), Giulio Ciccone (Trek-Segafredo), Dylan Groenewegen (BikeExchange-Jayco) and Franck Bonnamour (B&B Hotels-KTM), Nils Politt and Max Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe), Florian Senechal (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl), Benjamin Thomas (Cofidis), Valentin Madouas (Groupama-FDJ), Rigo Uran (EF), Matis Louvel (Arkea), Tony Gallopin (Trek-Segafredo), Edvald Boasson Hagen and Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies) and Michael Woods (Israel-Premier Tech)

Van Aert idles them home, nobody looking like they fancy challenging him. The green jersey is his, barring accident/Covid. The first climb approaches, and those 30 or so men will never be mentioned in the same breath again.

A crash at the back of the field!

95km to go: Van Aert joins up to make it a 30-man group up away at the front. A dog barks loudly as a bottle is lobbed. And at the back of the field, there’s a prang, A press motorbike took a tight street too keenly and Jack Bauer ended up going into the back of the UAE team car. 100km to go: It remains eventful, and there’s another break formed, only for it to splinter. Luke Rowe and Danny Martinez of Team Ineos are involved. There are signals made to work harder from within the group. Simon Geschke hasn’t managed to bridge the gap, it seems, as the gap goes up to just over 20 seconds.

110km to go: Mikkel Berg, who rode a big ride for Pogacar, is sat off the back of the peloton and looks to be suffering for yesterday’s efforts. Simon Geschke, the leader of the mountains points, is chasing down the breakaway, in an attempt to close off any other contenders for the polka pots on the first climb, the Col d’Aubisque. Eventually, the chase closes down the break and the pack is soon enough back together. Van Aert resumes the role of stalking horse up at the front. The pace is high, no rest ahead of the humps to come. Though as soon he rests, other attempt to make their escape.

115km to go: That break is made up of as follows: Stan Dewulf (Ag2R-Citroen), Andreas Leknessund (Team DSM), Stefan Bisseger (EF Education-EasyPost), Florian Vermeersch (Lotto Soudal) and Michael Matthews (BikeExchange-Jayco). The gap is teetering around 30 seconds.

120km to go: Van Aert is back in the pack and it’s left to others to chase the break. Christophe Laporte is on the front, replicating the actions of Van Aert, his Jumbo teammate. Michael Matthews is in this leading quintet, with Aleksandr Anatolyevich Vlasov, in eighth on GC, trying to join up. Van Aert then leads an expeditionary force from the peloton in an attempt to get within the break.

130km to go: No energy being saved for the climbs ahead, as Nils Pollit and Dylan Teuns chased after Van Aert as he makes a descent down the first hill of the day, they have nine seconds to make up on him, the peloton around 20 seconds behind but then the gap begins to go down, as a UAE-led peloton zip after him. Vingegaard and Pogacar are almost joined at the hip in the depths of the peloton, both covered up ahead of the battle to come up the road. Pollit and Teuns are pulled back in. Even Van Aert is struggling to live with the pace, the gap dwindling to five seconds. Stan Dewulf of AG2R catches him and overtakes him. Could this be the formation of a breakaway group?

140km to go: A reminder of what the stage looks like. Lumpy, in short and up the front, Van Aert drops Powless and flies away from the field. The man is relentless.

The peloton flies along to Kilometre Zero and off goes Wout van Aert goes off up ahead, the race is on immediately. Looks like the Jumbo-Visma plan is for him to go up ahead, take the intermediate sprint and then work with Vingegaard later on in the stage. Nelson Powless, a regular in the breakaways, joins him up there. A powerful duo to pull away so early.

The four-time winner has tested positive, and will take no further part for the Israel–Premier Tech team, for whom he rode to third on Alpe D’Huez. Will we see him again on Le Tour? The plan is for him to go for the Vuelta next month.

All over for “G” in terms of winning a second Tour but a podium finish is still on, he was cracked yesterday by Pogacar’s UAE teammates.

Thomas said: “I didn’t really expect that, especially from Berg. He put in a hell of a shift for the rider he is. It’s cracking me actually, that he was hurting me so much on a climb. But fair play: they really took it on.” Asked if Berg’s and particularly McNulty’s performance, which saw the American leading Pogacar into the final 200m, were what he had have expected, Thomas said: “Not at all, no. Fair play, both of them, and whatever they had for breakfast, because they were going.”

Everything is possible. Tadej, he had one bad day and lost the yellow jersey, so we need to put the pressure on and see if Jonas has a bad day. It’s one of the hardest stages in this year’s Tour. Tadej has good legs, we all feel confident and good that we can try to do something.

A third and final day in the Pyrenees, and a last chance for Tadej Pogacar to land a blow ahead of Saturday’s time trial. The stage win went his way on Wednesday but Jonas Vingegaard was not for the cracking as the two leaders made their way together to Peyragudes’ finish line.

A path well known but not necessarily well travelled on Le Tour, the Hautacam has serious history. The last winner on its peak was Vincenzo Nibali, who rode in the yellow jersey into Paris, while its most famous day was in 1996 when Miguel Indurain, the winner of five consecutive Tours, cracked as Bjarne Riis appeared to be riding a hematocrit-powered motorbike up ahead of Big Mig. And talking of suspicious wins, it was in 2000 that Lance Armstrong cracked Jan Ullrich, taking four minutes from the big, friendly giant.

Only one Frenchman has won on Hautacam, in 1994 when Luc Leblanc, that year’s world road race champion, crested the summit with Indurain just rwo seconds back and Marco Pantani 18 seconds back, the rest of the field splintered into smithereens. It’s a place where the big boys come out to play.

Another stage that is too short for a break to gain much time before the big names get moving. It’s a brutal course covering the legendary Col d’Aubisque and the unknown Col de Spandelles before the final haul to a bleak plateau. The winner will probably be in the top six overall, and he will be odds on to take the final victory. Think Pogacar, Roglic, Vingegaard or, from the left field, the Australian Ben O’Connor.

NB: Such is this Tour’s attrition that O’Connor and Roglic are long gone from the peloton. Instead, they will be aiming for this year’s Vuelta.

Tour de France 2022 Route stage 18: Lourdes - Hautacam

The riders clip into their pedals near the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes and leave the pilgrimage site behind to enter the Pyrenees. On virtually flat roads the route travels to Laruns and after 60 kilometres in the saddle the climbing begins.

The Col d’Aubisque is a climb of 16.4 kilometres at 7.1% before the riders descend via the Col du Soulor to Ferrières. That’s the base of the Col de Spandelles, which is a 10.3 kilometres climb at 8.3%.

A long descent leads to Argelès-Gazost, and that’s the base of the finish climb.

The ascent to ski resort Hautacam is a scenic one-way climb. The length is 13.6 kilometres and the average gradient sits at 7.8%. The second half is the hardest part with kilometres 8, 9 and 11 standing out – respectively with gradients at 10.3%, 11.3%, and 10.4%.

It’s the sixth time the Hautacam ascent is included in the Tour de France. Luc Leblanc won in 1994, Bjarne Riis in 1996 , Javier Otxoa in 2000, Juan José Cobo in 2008, and in 2014 Vincenzo Nibali took the win. With the exception of Otxoa and Nibali all these riders were affiliated with doping at some point in their career.

The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds.

THE TOUR DE FRANCE IN DENMARK: THE YELLOW FEVER

The northernmost Grand Départ of the Tour de France led to a popular craze that exceeded all expectations. From the teams’ presentation in the heart of Copenhagen to the finish of stage 3 in Sonderborg, the riders were treated to a noisy, warm and respectful honor hedge of more than 400 kilometers. The Danish television channel TV2 recorded an average market share of 78% during the first three stages. Never seen before!  

The tears of Jonas Vingegaard, touched by the welcome he received in the Tivoli theme park, are already part of the iconography of the 2022 Tour de France. Spectators who did not have the privilege of being among the 15,000 present for the teams’ presentation then flocked to the sidewalks of Copenhagen, defying the rain that watered the time trial in the heart of the capital on Friday afternoon. They were even more numerous to witness the conquest of the polka-dot jersey by Magnus Cort between Roskilde and Nyborg, then to greet their new national hero, who escaped alone towards Sonderborg. About two million Danes travelled to watch the race during this unprecedented sequence, out of a total population of around six million.But what did the Danes who didn’t attend the Tour de France between 1st and 3rd July do? The figures published by the national channel TV2 indicate that they have largely followed the stages of the Tour in front of their screens, since the market shares reached up to 86% of the people who turned on their television. A peak of 1,100,000 viewers was even recorded for the finish in Sonderborg, just before Dylan Groenewegen’s sprint victory. A way to greet the peloton massively before flying to the French territory.

Key numbers:

- During the first three days of the Tour de France, TV2/TV2 PLAY has been in contact with 2,362,000 Danes across stages and studio broadcasts. That’s almost a doubling compared to the interest we saw for the Tour’s first three days last year.

- The first three stages are seen by an average of 767,000 Danes (viewer shares from 72 percent to 86 percent) and at the 3rd stage - at the end of the route - the number of viewers peaks with 1,095,000 Danes who follow the final sprint through Sønderborg.

- The stages are the most viewed 1-3. stages ever, and for all Tour stages, we need to look back more than 10 years to find similar levels.

- On TV2.DK & apps, the interest is also overwhelming, with the first three days of the Tour de France content showing a quadrupling of traffic compared to previous years.

Giro 2024 (13e étape): insatiable Jonathan Milan, l'Italien remporte sa troisième victoire au sprint

L'essentiel.

• Jonathan Milan a remporté au sprint sa troisième victoire d'étape sur le Tour d'Italie ce vendredi. L'Italien a notamment devancé le Français Hugo Hofstetter, cinquième. Le classement de la 13e étape remportée par Jonathan Milan, intouchable sur le sprint
• Au terme d'une étape tranquille pour les leaders du classement général, le Slovène Tadej Pogacar a conservé le maillot rose, avec une avance confortable de 2’40" sur le Colombien Daniel Martinez. Romain Bardet est toujours sixième (+4'57").

Victoire pour Jonathan Milan!

Jonathan Milan remporte au sprint la 13e étape du Giro! L'Italien de l'équipe Lidl-Trek était une nouvelle fois le plus fort aujourd'hui. Il remporte sa troisième victoire d'étape sur ce Tour d'Italie.

Pris dans un coup de bourdure, il a pourtant dû cravacher pour revenir dans le peloton à une quarantaine de km de l'arrivée. Mais il était bel et bien le plus fort.

3km - Ça accélère très fort, Alaphilippe travaille pour Merlier

Tout le monde veut être parfaitement placé.

6km - Le peloton en ordre de marche vers le sprint final

C'est l'heure des grandes manoeuvres pour les équipes de sprinteur.

9km - De Pooter est repris

Seul en tête, le Belge est avalé par le peloton. Ça devrait se jouer au sprint, comme prévu.

15km - De Pooter tente sa chance tout seul

Le Belge Dries De Pooter (Intermarché-Wanty) fausse compagnie à Martin Marcellusi, son compagnon de fortune. Le peloton pointe toujours à une vingtaine de secondes.

16km - 20 secondes d'avance pour le duo de tête

Le Belge Dries De Pooter (Intermarché-Wanty) et l'Italien Martin Marcellusi (VF Group-Bardiani CSF) luttent contre le peloton.

20km - Chute dans le peloton!

Plusieurs coureurs sont allés au sol, alors que le peloton ne roulait pas vraiment à vive allure. C'est tombé en plein milieu du peloton. Aucun favori ne semble pris dans cette chute.

23km - Deux coureurs en tête

Le Belge Dries De Pooter (Intermarché-Wanty) et l'Italien Martin Marcellusi (VF Group-Bardiani CSF) ont attaqué. Ils comptent une trentraine de secondes d'avance sur le peloton.

28 km - Retour au calme avant l'emballage final

Après l'accélération d'Ineos-Grenadiers et le coup de bordure, le peloton roule "tranquillement" vers l'arrivée. Pour rappel, il n'y a plus aucun échappé.

36km - Le dernier groupe piégé dans la bordure est rentré

Si le groupe de Jonathan Milan avait pu rentrer, un autre, notamment composé de Benjamin Thomas et Valentin Paret Peintre, n'avait toujours pas réussi à boucher l'écart. C'est désormais chose faite.

43km - Ça rentre pour Jonathan Milan

Piégé par une bordure, le sprinteur fait son retour dans le peloton. Il a peut-être laissé des forces dans cet épisode en vue de la victoire d'étape.

47km - Milan toujours pas de retour dans le peloton

L'écart n'est pas encore bouché entre le peloton et le groupe qui s'était fait surprendre par le coup de bordure. Jonathan Milan, l'un des favoris à la victoire aujourd'hui, est distancé.

52km - C'est fini pour les trois hommes de tête

Pietroboni, Tarozzi et Tonelli ont été repris par le peloton. L'accélération de ce dernier pour tenter un coup de bordure leur aura été fatale.

59km - Jonathan Milan en difficulté

Favori pour la victoire d'étape, le sprinteur a été distancé dans le coup de bordure. Il pointe à environ 20 secondes du peloton.

61km - Coup de bordure initié par Ineos-Grenadiers

La formation britannique a accéléré. Des premières cassures ont eu lieu dans le peloton principal. Aucun gros favori ne s'est laissé piéger.

Les coureurs de la Bardiani prennent les deux premières places au deuxième sprint intermédiaire, dit "InterGiro". Le Giro effectue un classement InterGiro avec des points attribués chaque jour. Les points comptent également pour le classement par points. Cette fois, Jonathan Milan ne se bat pas et laisse Kaden Groves prendre la 4e place.

86km - Le peloton se rapproche encore

Seulement 1'20" d'avance pour le trio, qui n'a pratiquement aucune chance d'aller au bout.

100km - Le peloton reste calme

Toujours 2 minutes d'écart, le vent annoncé ne semble pas vraiment motiver les coureurs, qui en profitent pour récupérer avant plusieurs échéances importantes.

108km - Du vent annoncé

Est-ce que ça sera suffisant pour provoquer des bordures? Il y a des portions dégagées mais il faudra en avoir l'envie aussi.

114km - Passage au premeir sprint intermédiaire

Andrea Pietrobon devance les deux coureurs de la Bardiani. Dans le peloton, on y va sans vraiment trop forcer. Jonathan Milan et Kaden Groves ont chacun leur train et c'est finalement l'Italien, après un petit sprint, qui a conforté son maillot.

119km - Tarozzi se trompe dans un rond-point

Manuele Tarozzi prend la mauvaise direction dans un rond-point. Pas de panique pour l'Italien, qui revient rapidement à l'avant.

120km - L'écart continue de baisser

Sans vraiment forcer, le peloton revient déjà peu à peu. Il n'y a plus que 2 minutes d'écart. Le soleil est lui au beau fixe sur cette étape, tout comme le public.

130km - Rien à signaler

L'écart se stabilise autour des 2'30". Pour les téléspectateurs bien calés dans leur canapé, la sieste doit être bonne.

La Visma-Lease a Bike annonce le retour de Wout Van Aert

En marge du Tour d'Italie, la Visma-Lease a Bike annonce le retour à la compétition de Wout Van Aert lors du Tour de Norvège (du 23 au 26 mai). Le Belge, qui devait être présent sur le Giro, avait chuté lors d'A Travers la Flandre fin mars, l'empêchant de disputer les classiques dans la foulée.

150 km - 3 sprints intermédiaires aujourd'hui

Le premier d'entre eux interviendra après 60 kilomètres de course. En attendant, le rythme est tranquille dans le peloton, du moins pour des cyclistes pros.

160km - Moins de 3 minutes

Alpecin-Deceuninck et Lidl-Trek, respectivement pour Kaden Groves et Jonathan Milan, roulent avec la Soudal-QuickStep.

168km - L'équipe d'Alaphilippe roule

Mais pour le sprinteur Tim Merlier. L'écart est de 3'20", le peloton n'a pas envie de laisser trop d'avance au trio de tête.

170km - "La classe à la Française", Calmejane rend hommage à Alaphilippe

Filmé alors qu'il était en discussion avec Julian Alaphilippe, le Français Lilian Calmejane (Intermarché-Wanty) rend hommage à son compatriote : "c'est ça la classe à la Française!"

175km - Pietrobon bien parti pour conserver la tête d'un classement

Les kilomètres à l'avant sont mis à l'honneur sur le Giro, avec un classement de la Fuga. Leader avec 332 kilomètres comptabilisés, Andrea Pietrobon va faire fructifier son avance. Pour indication, il faut qu'il y ait moins de 10 coureurs dans un groupe pour que les kilomètres soient pris en compte.

177 km - Trois Italiens à l'avant

Outre Andrea Pietrobon, il y a également deux coureurs de la formation invitée VF Group - Bardiani : Manuele Tarozzi et Alessandro Tonelli.

Après des mois de doutes, de chutes et de blessures, Julian Alaphilippe a signé une renaissance éclatante jeudi en remportant en solitaire la 12e étape du Tour d'Italie grâce à un raid extraordinaire de plus de cent kilomètres. Après le coup de force de Julian Alaphilippe , vainqueur jeudi, cette étape, extrêmement plate, semble promise aux sprinteurs. Du côté des favoris , ils auront l'occasion de "récupérer" un peu avant le contre-la-montre ce samedi.

Déjà vainqueur à deux reprises sur cette édition, Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) fait office d'homme à battre. Le sprinteur italien tentera de nouveau de prendre le dessus sur Tim Merlier, qu'il a devancé mercredi, même si le Belge a été finalement déclassé pour sprint irrégulier ensuite

C’est la deuxième victoire d’étape de l’Italien (après celle d’Andora) devant Tim Merlier, qui a bien résisté. Le sprinteur italien de Lidl - Trek a réglé, en costaud, cette bagarre finale, tout en puissance.

Cette arrivée massive a été marquée par une chute ayant impliqué Fabio Jakobsen (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL), Tobias Lund Andresen (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL) ou encore Jenthe Biermans (Arkéa - B & B Hotels).

Un peu auparavant, à dix kilomètres de l’arrivée, les équipes de sprinteurs étaient déjà placées à l’avant du peloton. Andrea Piccolo (EF Education - EasyPost) avait bien tenté de sortir, mais il avait été très vite été rejoint par le peloton…
