Where to stay

Bring your tent or RV to enjoy the great outdoors at one of the many campgrounds in the park.

Two of the three National Park Service campgrounds accept reservations: Mather Campground on the South Rim and North Rim Campground . Desert View Campground on the South Rim (open seasonally between mid-April and mid-October) is first-come, first-served, and Trailer Village is a concessioner-run RV park with full hook-ups.

If roughing it isn't quite your style, Grand Canyon National Park Lodges operates numerous hotels, both inside and outside the park.

Located at the top of Bright Angel Trailhead, the historic Bright Angel Lodge & Cabins , designed by Mary Colter in 1935, provides rustic accommodations close to outdoor adventure. Take your pick from budget-friendly lodge rooms with shared bathrooms, standard lodge rooms or private cabins (one of which was home to one of Roosevelt's "Rough Riders").

Perched on the edge of the South Rim, the European chalet-style El Tovar Hotel , which opened in 1905, offers spectacular views, one-of-a-kind rooms and suites, and fine dining in the famous El Tovar Dining Room.

Just a mile from the entrance of the park, The Grand Hotel at the Grand Canyon is the area's only Three-Diamond hotel, and the rustic chalet-style hotel offers an indoor heated swimming pool and hot tub, a steakhouse and saloon, and plush rooms with a kitchenette.

Meanwhile, Thunderbird Lodge and Kachina Lodge are popular choices for families, due to their casual, modern aesthetic and convenient location within walking distance to many of the park's attractions.

On the North Rim, book one of the cozy cabins at the historic Grand Canyon Lodge to stay amid towering pine trees and just steps away from the scenic Bright Angel Point Trail. This landmark lodge boasts cliffside views and an on-site restaurant serving up hearty, regionally inspired dishes such as venison meatloaf and wild rice primavera.

Getting around

Take advantage of the Grand Canyon National Park's free shuttle buses that operate on set routes throughout the park along the South Rim, including:

• the Village (Blue) Route, connecting the visitor center with lodging and other facilities;
• Kaibab Rim (Orange) Route, a figure-eight route between the visitor center and five scenic viewpoints;
• Hermit Road (Red) Route, connecting Grand Canyon Village and Hermits Rest, with scenic overlook stops along the way; and
• the Tusayan (Purple) Route, a park-and-ride service between the community of Tusayan and the park.

The early-morning Hiker's Express Shuttle transports hikers to the South Kaibab Trailhead from Bright Angel Lodge, the Backcountry Information Center and the Grand Canyon Visitor Center. For a $90 fee, the privately run Trans-Canyon Shuttle takes visitors between the North and South Rims.

Your morning starts with breakfast and a drive up the Zion switchbacks to see a wild world of swirling sandstone, then out through the east entrance. You pass through Kanab, Utah , marveling at yet more fantastic rock formations along the way. Up you go up to the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park and visit viewpoints around the North Rim Lodge including Bright Angel Point and other areas. After lunch you will continue your journey to Page, Arizona by crossing the Navajo Bridge spanning the Colorado River , passing by the enormous Vermilion Cliffs , so named for their brilliantly crimson striations of sedimentary rock. There will also be a stop at the Navajo Bridge and Colorado River. Our lodging for the next two nights is on the shores of Lake Powell .

There's no better way to see the best of what the Colorado River and Lake Powell has to offer, while learning about its history and geology than stepping aboard a guided boat tour of Navajo Canyon . Avoid the land-tour crowds, bask in the Navajo Sandstone’s orange glow, and experience wonders only the water provides as you glide deeper and deeper into the world’s most famous and beautiful slot canyons.  The highlight is the beautiful Navajo Tapestry-laden walls of Navajo Canyon and learning about the Navajo People who have inhabited this land for centuries.    Once finished on water, experience the undulating sandstone-sculpted walls of Antelope Canyon . Today you will head to Kayenta, Arizona , for a brief stop before entering Monument Valley in an open-air truck. Admire the gigantic formations up close or towering along the horizon. You'll also visit filming spots for classic Western movies and lesser-frequented outcroppings in the backcountry. After lunch, you will have some time to explore the historic Gouldings Lodge before continuing to Bluff, UT. Stops will be made at Sand Island Petroglyph Panel and Historic Fort Bluff to learn about the early settlers of the region before enjoying your evening in this quaint town.

Start your day with breakfast before traveling to Four-Corners Monument where you will stop to shop and snap a shot at the famous spot where the borders of Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah all meet.

Travel into Colorado to Mesa Verde National Park . Here, you'll explore and experience the dramatic ruins of ancient Pueblo cliff houses, built into shallow caves and under rock overhangs. You will also stop at viewpoints and a museum along the mesa top before heading to the San Juan Mountains for Durango. This frontier town offers plenty of restaurants and shopping — just the place to enjoy your free evening.

Score a true frontier experience with a steam engine train ride on the Durango and Silverton Railroad , an impressive track built in 1881 that snakes along the canyons of the Animas River Valley . It'll be lunchtime when you arrive in Silverton, and the Shady Lady, Bent Elbow, and Natalie's--all former bordello and current restaurants--will be happy to accommodate you. Then, trek the twisting turns of the Million Dollar Highway , stopping in Ouray for some shopping before the final leg to Moab. (If traveling from March 1 to May 1, the train ride will be only up to Cascade Canyon.)

Spend the day exploring Arches National Park and its 2,000 natural sandstone arches, up to 50 of which you'll experience firsthand as you hike to the Delicate Arch, Landscape Arch, Devil's Garden, and Courthouse Towers . Returning to the hotel, you'll have the afternoon free before an early dinner at a local restaurant, giving you plenty of time to head over to Dead Horse Point for a beautiful sunset overlooking the Colorado River.

Lodging – Hyatt Place, Moab, UT (B, L, D)

Today, you're treated to another scenic drive into Canyonlands National Park to see and experience the majestic Mesa Arch in the morning. This is the best time to photograph this formation. You will then enjoy the San Rafael Swell on the way to Capitol Reef National Park , where you'll hike up to Hickman Bridge , enjoy the Grand Wash , and look for Geodes and other activities within this fantastic park. Dinner and an enjoyable evening will be experienced at one of the local hotels in this area.

After a morning exploring Capitol Reef National Park, you will journey down Highway 12 , known as the All-American Road for its iconic vistas, and also the deep canyons that have been carved through the landscape before arriving at Bryce Canyon National Park , a Utah treasure filled with unearthly archways and rose-colored hoodoos. You'll spend the evening hiking the stunning canyon, relaxing, and dining on your own in Bryce Canyon.

Your last day in the Southwest's fantastic landscape starts with a stellar sendoff of early morning sun lighting up pink cliffs during an unforgettable sunrise in Bryce Canyon . After hiking and exploring more of the canyon, you'll head back to Las Vegas, stopping for a few final views of Zion National Park from the Kolob Canyons and lunch at a local joint in Cedar City, Utah . After lunch begin your return drive to Las Vegas through the historic town of St George, UT .  Hotel drop off by 6:00 pm PST.  Thank you for traveling with us!

5 Can’t-Miss Day Trips from Mesa, AZ You Won’t Forget

Exploring is a fantastic way learn more about their surroundings. You can take day hikes or visit museums with your family. There are many beautiful locations to visit within a couple of hours’ drive from Mesa, Arizona. If you are looking for a day trip for you and your family that is both fun and educational, look no further than this list of five day trips from Mesa you need to try. There is something for everyone, even if you want to drive an hour or two, which will be ideal for a trip with your little ones. 

1. Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is number one on many people’s lists of places to visit. It is a beautiful testament to what nature is capable of and is one of the world’s seven natural wonders. While a day trip out to this magnificent beauty may have you spending long hours in the car, it will be more than worth it when you arrive. 

From Mesa, the Grand Canyon is a 496-mile roundtrip. The trip is just under four hours from Mesa but still doable in one day, especially if you leave early in the morning. It may be a long day for those in the 2 to 4-year-old range, but your infants will likely catch a couple of great naps along the way while your kindergartner can find plenty of exciting sights out their window. Snacks and car activities will also be your friend for this drive. 

When you reach the park, you can easily spend hours exploring lookouts and sites throughout Grand Canyon National Park and along the Canyon Rim. Guided tours are available, as are helicopter flyovers of the canyon. 

However, if you and your family prefer a self-guided experience, you can pick up a map at the entrance and start exploring. Some of the more popular attractions depending on which rim you go to, are places like the following:

• Kolb Studio
• Lookout Studio
• Mather Point Overlook
• Geological Museum
• Hermit Road Drive
• Grand Canyon Railway Depot
• Bright Angel Trail
• Desert View Drive

This is just a selection of the trails and sites you can experience while spending a day at the Grand Canyon. If you decide to hit up multiple spots and turn your day trip into a weekend trip, there are many hotels in the area to stay in that are kid-friendly. 

2. Apache Trail and Superstition

The Apache Trail is much closer to Mesa — only 65 miles, roundtrip. This historic trail allows you to immerse your little ones in Native American culture. You can walk in the footsteps of prospectors and Native Americans from 100 years ago and see the volcanic Superstition cliffs — which scale 2,000 feet —and the hidden Lost Dutchman Mine. 

The Lost Dutchman Mine is one of the most talked-about mines in the West. Take your children to The Superstition Mountain Lost Dutchman Museum to see artifacts, history, and folklore from the area. 

Goldfield is also in the area. In the 1890s, it was a prosperous community. Now it’s a desolate ghost town. Add a little intrigue to your day trip by taking the Goldfield Ghost Town’s guided tour of the Mammoth Mine. While there, enjoy the shops, saloon, and a vintage general store. 

Venture a little further past the ghost town, and you will reach Canyon Lake Marina in the Tonto National Forest. Take a ride on Dolly Steamboat for the nature cruise. You and your family will get the experience of an old-fashioned riverboat cruise. As you float, your captain will share historical facts about the trail and the lake. 

3. Wickenburg and Lake Pleasant

Head an hour north of Phoenix to visit a town steeped in the Old West. Here you can explore places like: 

• Antique shops
• Art Galleries
• Outdoor trails
• Beautiful nature spots
• Historic buildings
• Vulture Mine

If you are more interested in water features, drive about 35 miles southeast to Lake Pleasant . It is one of the largest in the state, plus it has rentals for boats, fishing boats, deck boats, and even houseboats, which will surely be fun for your kids. 

Hassayampa River Preserve is a protected wildlife environment with 4 miles of trails to hike that allows you to see birds, mammals, and reptiles, allowing you to teach your kids more about animals’ natural habitats. 

4. Mogollon Rim

Take a 206-mile round trip trek to Mogollon Rim . Here you and your family will find the world’s largest natural bridge, Tonto Natural Bridge. The travertine bridge is 400-feet long and sits 183-feet high. Stand on top of the bridge and take in the secenry or follow the trail underneath the bridge so you and your family can marvel at its sheer size. 

In the area lies Pine, a community settled by Mormon pioneers in 1879. The town is full of historical buildings, and they even have a Pioneer Days Celebration they hold yearly in July. It is one of the oldest of its kind. 

Also, check out the nearby town of Strawberry, which gets its name from the wild berries growing in its hills. It is home to the state’s oldest schoolhouse made by pioneers in 1885. The schoolhouse still stands and is a state historical site. 

5. Globe, Miami and Tonto

Globe and Miami are two historical mining communities filed with enough history to satisfy the most curious minds. You can visit the Besh-Ba-Gowah Indian Ruins, some of the most well-preserved sites in the Southwest region. On the San Carlos Reservation, you can visit the San Carlos Apache Cultural Center just 10 miles south of Globe. 

Head toward Roosevelt Lake, and you will hit the Tonto National Monument . Adjacent to the monument, there is a hiking trail leading to the Salado Indian ruins. Here you can see the cliff homes from 500 years ago, giving you an idea of how the natives lived. 

Of course, the final attraction is the Roosevelt Dam , one of the world’s largest masonry dams. Named after Theodore Roosevelt, the dam keeps the Valley of the Sun supplied with water.
