Shortcuts app for iPhone

How to create custom iPhone home screen app icons in iOS 14

Aesthetic upgrade trick uses apple's shortcuts app and doesn't involve jailbreaking.

Thanks to the new widgets of iOS 14, iPhone users can finally customize the look of their home screens. Yes, Android owners are probably laughing at home Apple is a decade late to the party, but it's still a big deal for life-long iPhone users.

There are two parts to the equation. The first, as we wrote about at GearBrain previously , is how applications can be used to create custom widgets beyond those offered by Apple and app developers. The most popular of these customization apps is Widgetsmith, which is free to use but charges to create a weather widget.

  • How to personalize your iOS 14 iPhone home screen with custom widgets
  • What are Siri Shortcuts? How they work and how to create them

The second part is using Apple's own Shortcuts app to create a set of custom application icons. This isn't actually new for iOS 14, as the Shortcuts app has been available for a year. But its ability to change app icons has only just been realized by the majority of iPhone users.

Before we explain how to use the Shortcuts app to create custom iPhone app icons, there are a couple of important caveats. The first is that these icons will not display notifications badges, and the second is that tapping on the icons first opens the Shortcuts app, which then quickly opens the app you wanted. The Shortcuts app only appears for a brief moment, but it's there nonetheless.

Clearly this isn't Apple's intended primary use for the Shortcuts app, but it works.

How to create custom iPhone app icons with the Shortcuts app

First, you need to find (or create) an image you want to use as your new app icon, and save it to your iPhone's camera roll. Now follow these instructions:

  • Download and open the Shortcuts app
  • Tap on the + in the top-right corner
  • Tap on the Add Action button
  • Tap on the search box, type 'open app' and tap Choose
  • Now tap on the three dots in the top corner, then pick the app you want the shortcut to open
  • Tap on the Add to Home Screen button

Now you should see a placeholder app icon next to the Shortcut you have created (which you will have named after the app you want to open). Follow these instructions to continue:

  • Tap on the gray placeholder icon next to the shortcut name
  • Tap on the Choose Photo button and pick whatever image you want to use
  • Tap Add, then Done and the new shortcut will appear on your iPhone home screen

Finally, you'll want to hide the original app so you don't have two on your home screen. To do this (which is new to iOS 15), long-press on the app then tap Remove App, then Move to App Library.

That way, the app remains installed on your phone but its icon won't appear on the home screen. Instead it will be moved to the app library list on the page to the right of your home screen.

With all that complete, you now have a shortcut that is named after the app you want, but has a custom icon. When tapped, the shortcut briefly opens the Shortcuts app, but then quickly opens the correct app.

This is a trick not without its limitations, but – along with the new custom widgets – means your iPhone screen can be personalized far more than ever before.

How to use custom app icons on your iphone and ipad.

Tired of seeing the same default app icons on your iPhone or iPad? Using this trick, you can change them to anything you like!

Quick Links

How does it work, preparing a replacement icon image, "replace" iphone and ipad app icons with custom designs.

If you're tired of seeing the same old app icons on your iPhone or iPad home screen, you can customize their look by creating new ones and "replacing" them. The trick is possible using Apple's  Shortcuts  app, which allows you to use any image as an icon.

Currently, it's not possible to truly replace an app's icon on an iPhone or iPad. Instead, you can achieve a similar result by using the Shortcuts app. We'll be creating a custom shortcut that opens an app and then using a custom image as its icon on the home screen.

This technique has been possible since the introduction of Shortcuts in iOS 12 , but it became popular following the release of  iOS 14 , which allows you to officially hide home screen icons in your App Library .

iPhone owners running iOS 12 or iOS 13---or iPad owners with iPadOS 12 or 13---can do this same trick and place the original icons they don't want to see in folders to tuck them out of the way .

Before we begin, you'll need to decide which app icon you're replacing, and you'll need to locate or create the image you'd like to replace it with.

The ideal replacement icon will be a perfectly square image of about 512 x 512 pixels in size, although you'll have the opportunity to crop any image to a square shape in the steps ahead. For this example, we've created a simple purple mail icon in an image editor by using a simple envelope outline.

For your custom icon, you can use any image or photo you'd like as long as it's in your device's photo library. Try searching Google for custom icon designs and saving them, or you can draw your own icon and transfer it to your iPhone or iPad using AirDrop .

Related: How to Instantly Share Files with AirDrop on iPhone, iPad, and Mac

First, open the "Shortcuts" app. If you don't see it on your home screen, swipe downward with one finger in the middle of your screen to open Spotlight search . Type "shortcuts" into the search bar that appears and then tap the "Shortcuts" icon.

In the Shortcuts app, if you see the "Shortcuts" overview screen, tap the "My Shortcuts" tab and then select "All Shortcuts."

On the "All Shortcuts" page, tap the "+" button.

Next, you'll see a "New Shortcut" page where you add the steps to the automation, sort of like a computer program. We're going to add a single step that opens an app. Tap the "Add Action" button.

When the actions panel appears, choose the "Scripting" option.

In the "Scripting" panel, select "Open App."

Back on the new shortcut page, locate the box for the "Open App" action. Tap "Choose."

In the "Choose App" panel that appears, select the search bar and type the name of the app you'd like to launch when you tap your custom icon. Then tap the app's name in the results list. You can choose any app on your iPhone or iPad.

Next, tap the three-dot menu button in the top-right corner. On an iPad, these dots are at the very top-center of the screen beside the "New Shortcut" name.

A "Details" panel will appear. First, tap "Shortcut Name" and name the shortcut anything you'd like, so it will be labeled properly in the Shortcuts app. Then tap "Add to Home Screen."

In the panel that pops up, locate the "Home Screen Name and Icon" section. Select the placeholder icon to the left of "New Shortcut."

In the context menu that pops up, select "Choose Photo."

Using the photo selection panel that appears, locate and choose the photo in your library you'd like to use as your new custom app icon. After you select it, you'll have a chance to crop it to fit the square ratio of a standard app icon.

After that, tap the "New Shortcut" name. Enter the label you'd like to use for the icon on your home screen. Ideally, this will be the name of the app icon you're replacing, such as "Safari" or "Mail."

Finally, tap the "Add" button and your shortcut will be added to your home screen.

Once the custom icon is on your home screen, you can move the app icon wherever you like, including the Dock. To run the app, tap the shortcut icon you just created.

If you'd like to hide the original app icon (and you're running iOS 14 or later), enter Jiggle mode by pressing and holding a blank area of your home screen and then move the icon to your App Library .

If you're running iOS 12 or iOS 13, or using an iPad (which does not have an App Library), you can "hide" the original app icon by moving it to a folder that you can place on a different screen.

Related: How to Move iPhone Apps From a Home Screen to the App Library

The only downside of this technique is that when launching an app through your shortcut, you first make a quick detour through the Shortcuts app before the actual app appears. At the moment, this is a necessary drawback, but the behavior may change in a future update. Have fun customizing your device!

Aesthetic Fall App Icons for iPhone and Android

Get in the Autumn spirit by swapping out your app covers with fall-themed icons. In this article, I'm sharing free aesthetic fall app icons for an iPhone and Android.

Aesthetic Fall App Icons for iPhone and Android

Autumn's cool weather, colorful leaves, and early sunsets after hot summer days gently remind us that change is necessary. With fall app icons, you can carry the beauty and symbolism of autumn right in the palm of your hand.

I've seen home screens embellished with colorful pumpkin icons, flannel designs, and vibrant apples fit for an apple orchard. Additionally, you can makeover app icons in every fall color or keep it simple with a neutral layout. Add an aesthetic autumn background, and you have a home screen fit for the season!

In this article, I'm sharing free fall app icons you can download, and how to use them with an iPhone or Android. Let's get started!

Illustrated Fall App Icons

This first set of fall app icons by RJ Kaur features adorable hand-drawn icons on top of a solid background. The burnt orange, olive green, and golden shades are reminiscent of leaves covering the streets. There are 40+ app covers to work with including, Twitter, Instagram , Reddit, Etsy, Netflix , and more.

safari icon aesthetic iphone

I avoid placing apps with the same background color side by side , then add frequently used apps at the very bottom of the home screen. That way, I can quickly find and open the app. For me, this usually consists of the phone, messages, and Safari app, but add what best suits your needs! You'll find a few app covers in RJ Kaur's Pinterest board overlaid with handwritten text to download as well.

Cozy Fall App Icons

If you're browsing Pinterest for aesthetic app icons, you'll quickly find covers by Lori from Guitar and Lace . She recently whipped up a few more sets with fall in mind that you can download for free. This cozy set includes 43 covers with background images of various soft, patterned sweaters, flannels, and blankets. This is the perfect set to use and view while snuggling up next to a fireplace.

Minimal Fall App Icons

Minimal fall app icons work well if you're going for something something simple and sweet. These app covers by Vanja from Life with Alba lets your wallpaper shine without consuming app covers in its design. I recommend using a wallpaper with contrasting colors like cream, green, purple, and gold.

You can always use this free app icon template If you're hoping to customize covers with your own photos. This template has a 1:1 aspect ratio to make perfectly sizes covers for your iPhone or Android and can be resized to make widgets for both devices. I recommend signing into Kapwing first, so there won't be a watermark on your image after exporting. You can use any email address and it's free to sign up!

How to Change iPhone App Icons

The release of iOS 14 sent social media in a frenzy as users shared their aesthetic home screens on Twitter and TikTok. Now that time has passed, I'm sure you're a pro at customizing the home screen. If this is your first time sprucing up app covers, or you need a refresher, follow the steps below.

  • Tap Shortcuts , then the + sign in the top right corner of the screen.
  • Tap + add action and type Open App in the search bar and select it from the menu.
  • Tap Choose and pick an app.
  • Tap the blue circle in the top right corner, then tap add to home screen .

How to Change Android App Icons

While the above examples show the apps covers in use on an iPhone, you can use them on Androids too. I'm sharing a straight-forward process that doesn't use a Launcher. The covers should be quick to implement if you have every image saved to your phone.

  • Download Shortcut Maker from the Google Play store.
  • Choose Apps from the menu and select the icon you want to customize.
  • Tap Icon and choose a shape, then tap Gallery Image to select a cover.
  • Use the crop tool to select the entire cover, then tap the blue checkmark .
  • Give your shortcut a name, then tap create shortcut.

Safari Icon Aesthetic For iPhone On iOS 14 in 2024

The world’s fastest browser – Safari, is compatible only with Apple devices. By updating to iOS version 14, users will be able to switch the default Safari icon to any icon according to their wish. By doing so, iPhone users will be able to create a unique home screen. With a huge collection of icons present all over the internet, users can uniquely customize stunning icons and make use of it and make their iPhones look ravishing. iPhone users can download icons from the web either for free or for a certain price. But it is advised to go with free icon packs, as there are numerous icons available for free. Paying a price only to make use of one or two icons, just doesn’t feel right.

The simple and most common way to customize a Safari icon is by using the shortcut application. This is a basic and easy method that gets the work done in no time. On all the iPad and iOS devices the shortcut app comes pre-installed. This app has the ability to enable its user to change the primary icon of the Safari application. The concept of customization has become very popular recently after the launch of iOS version 14.

What Does “Shortcut App” Actually Do?

Let’s get this straight, with the shortcut application, users will be able to create a new icon as well as the application. In simpler words, a shortcut app creates a new app, that will be created according to your preference of application name and application icon.

For example, once you create a Safari application using the shortcut app, there will be two Safari applications on the home screen (default app and newly created). Once you get familiar with the new app, the default app can be uninstalled.

Procedure To Set Aesthetic Icon For Safari On iPhone iOS 14

Make sure to keep the picture downloaded and ready before starting this procedure and check if the iPhone is updated to the latest version of iOS. All the below-mentioned steps are easy and simple to follow. Now that everything is made clear about the shortcut app, let’s move on to the steps for setting an aesthetic icon for the Safari application on an iOS device.

  • Step 1: Launch the pre-installed shortcut app on the iOS device.
  • Step 2: Select the “+” option on the right top corner of the displayed screen.
  • Step 3: Tap on the ” + add ” option, to start the process.
  • Step 4: Click on the “open app” and then navigate to the “Safari” application.
  • Step 5: Select the “add to home screen” option which is available.
  • After this there will be three drop-down options, “take photo”, “choose photo” and the last one “choose file”. These options will be displayed. This is where iPhone users will be able to set a name and icon for the application.
  • Step 6: Click on the “choose photo” option and select the image you want to set as the app icon.
  • Step 7: Click the “choose” option on the bottom of the screen to set that image as the application’s icon.
  • Step 8: Select the done option, to save all the changes.

After this, if you go back to your home screen, you will see two applications named Safari (default app and newly created). Once you find your way around the newly created app, you can delete the default app from your iOS device and start using the customized app – full-time.

Safari Icon Aesthetic Samples

Here are a few ideas for the Safari application icon.

Safari Icon Aesthetic

The Safari icon can be set in a way that can coincide with either the light mode or dark mode. Make sure that your phone looks vibrant and exclusive and make changes to your home screen. So, browse through the net, visit several sites, go through various packs and select uniquely styled icons that you like. Or you could just make your own themed icons and give them an even more interesting look.

The major disadvantage of Apple products was the lack of customization ability, but with the iOS version 14, you can give a new and exclusive look to your Safari application icon. Users can also change it often to keep it more exciting. Though many found this feature to be surprising, few were sure that this day might come.

Also, here are a few things you should remember while creating your own icons, make sure that the icons are different and stand out so that it will be easy to identify that application. Go through several icon packs before choosing the ideal one for you. Remember, the uniqueness of your phone depends on how good your imagination is.

App icon customization, new emoji creation coming to iOS 18

Charles Martin's Avatar

Replacement of standard app icons could finally be possible in iOS 18

safari icon aesthetic iphone

The forthcoming iOS 18, expected to be announced at June's WWDC event, will mix the usual round of new features alongside AI-based enhancements. Previous reports have proposed that Photos, Safari , Siri , Voice Memos , and Notes among other apps will gain AI-based abilities.

Another potential use of AI technology will come to Messages, with the app gaining the ability to suggest new custom emojis, based on what the user is texting. This would be in addition to the ever-expanding library of standard emojis, which work across various platforms.

Apple will also be allowing users further freedom in customizing their home screens. In addition to previously-mentioned reports of free placement and grouping of app icons, more customization options are on the way.

Bloomberg now reports that iOS 18 will give users the ability to change app icons, though it is unclear how far Apple will go with this.

As an example of app icon customization, users might wish to change the new black icon for social service X back to the sky blue color it was when called Twitter. It could also be possible to change, for example, all sports-related apps to have a red icon, or banking and finance apps to have green icons.

It's unlikely that outright app icon replacement would be officially permitted, as in letting users replace the X app icon with the old Twitter icon.

The company will reveal more of its plans for iOS 18 at WWDC, starting June 10th, 2024.

Forget OpenAI, Google, Nvidia, etc. Apple will have full emoji AI supremacy.

mikethemartian said: Forget OpenAI, Google, Nvidia, etc. Apple will have full emoji AI supremacy. More importantly, most of Apple's efforts in "AI" seem to be focused on enhancing functions and apps users already rely on, and make them perform better. This might be less "flashy" and "entertaining" than dangerously hallucinating AI chatbots who tell you to eat one small rock a day and glue your cheese to your pizza, but what we've seen reported here and elsewhere actually sounds like it will more-or-less seamlessly fit into my existing workflows, either by saving some steps or by saving some time. We'll see what WWDC brings us, but so far I like the approach Apple seems to be taking compared to the AI-generated dog and pony show we get from the others.

Isn't that what MS and Google are already doing with MS Office + Copilot and Google Workspace + Gemini?

Microsoft AI where your computing life will be recalled in a rerun available to the highest bidder?..... I  think Apple will do better building  long term products when compared to Microsoft, Google, or Meta.

Spring cleaning: Make your iPhone feel new again

T here are two types of iPhone users: those whose unread emails are non-existent, and those whose mail app shows a four-digit red number. If you find yourself in the latter camp, your smartphone is probably housing more than just unopened messages but unnecessary apps and outdated files. A cluttered iPhone doesn't just make it hard to find the right app, a smartphone with storage near capacity can have reduced performance.

A cluttered iPhone doesn't just make it hard to find the right app, a smartphone with storage near capacity can have reduced performance.

But, when it comes time to clean up an iPhone, there are a few tricks that can make the process faster. And, frankly, who doesn't love a way to simplify their spring-cleaning chore list? Here are a few tips and tricks to clean up your iPhone quickly, from opening up storage to physically disinfecting your device.

How to clean and disinfect your AirPods and AirPods Max

How to clear memory on an iphone by deleting unused apps, photos, and files.

Once your iPhone's storage is full, you can't take any more photos or download any apps -- ideally, you should clear out unused data before your smartphone becomes perilously full.

How to quickly remove apps from an iPhone

The easiest place to start is by deleting unused apps. To delete an app from your home screen, follow these steps:

  • Tap and hold on the app until a small menu pops up.
  • To delete several apps quickly, tap Edit Home Screen . In this mode, all the app icons start to wiggle.
  • You do not need to exit the wiggly app mode to navigate to different home pages, you can simply swipe over to the other pages.
  • Tap Done once finished.

Tricks to quickly delete photos and videos from an iPhone

One of the biggest culprits that triggers a "storage full" message on the iPhone is photos and videos. The first step is to save the photos that you want to keep in another location -- and there are a few different ways to do this. You can plug your iPhone into a MacBook and use the Photos app to transfer the files over to your MacBook. Or, you can transfer photos to a portable hard drive plugged into your iPhone. Cloud storage is another option as well, if you have the space.

Before you start, be sure you have the photos in another location besides the iCloud, as deleting images from your iPhone will also remove them from the iCloud.

Once you've saved the memories that you don't want to lose, it's time to mass delete large quantities of photos . If you don't need any of those old photos, you can follow this guide to quickly delete all iPhone photos. If you have a few photos that you pull up on occasion, there are still some shortcuts that you can use to delete large amounts of photos without removing everything.

The fastest way to clear out unnecessary photos is to use the iPhone's built-in utility that finds and merges duplicate images, keeping only one version.

  • Open the Photos app and tap Albums.
  • Scroll down to Utilities .
  • Select Duplicates .
  • Tap Select in the upper right corner.
  • Tap Select All .
  • At the bottom, tap Merge .
  • In the pop-up, choose whether you want to merge only exact copies, or similar copies as well.

How to hide a photo and create a hidden album on iPhone

While removing duplicate photos is great, the iPhone, unfortunately, doesn't have an option to automatically remove all your unflattering selfies. But, you can quickly select large groupings of images.

  • If you scroll down on the album page, you can also see folders organized into media types. This is a great shortcut for, say, deleting all of your screenshots at once.
  • Next, tap the first photo in the grouping to delete, then drag your finger across the screen and photos until you've selected every image in that section. Skip over any images that you want to keep and repeat until you've selected everything that you want to remove.
  • Tap the trashcan icon in the lower right corner and confirm your deletion in the pop-up window.

How to organize your iPhone's home screen and add widgets

Once you've cleared out the storage space, your iPhone home screen may look a bit bare. Organizing your home screen allows you to access your most frequently used apps the fastest, while making other apps easier to find. I like to put my most-used apps on the first page, then arrange subsequent pages by category, so everything is easy to find, but you can use whatever organization strategy fits your lifestyle.

  • Tap and hold the background of the home screen until the apps start to wiggle.
  • To move an app, tap and drag the icon to its new position. Drag to the side of the screen to jump to a new page.
  • To create a folder of apps, drag one app and drop it on top of another app that you want to group it with. Type in a folder name at the top. Tap outside the folder to exit. Any subsequent apps to be added can be dragged to the new folder rather than dragging on top of another app.
  • To add a new Widget, tap the plus icon. On the next screen, select a Smart Stack for a group of Widgets, or choose a Widget from the list.
  • Widgets can be dragged and dropped to new home screen locations just like app icons can. Or, you can leave your home screen Widget-free and access Widgets by swiping from the left, then tapping the edit button on the bottom to customize.

How to customize your iPhone home screen aesthetic

Clean up safari by closing old tabs and deleting bookmarks.

Another culprit for forgetting data-hogging iPhone space is Safari. Opening new tabs with each link can lead to hundreds of forgotten tabs. Thankfully, iOS has a few tricks that make cleaning up those old tabs take just a few taps.

  • Clean up old Safari tabs by following this guide . The gist: Open the tab view, long press one thumbnail and select Close Other Tabs.
  • Set Safari to automatically delete unused tabs, so you don't get another backlog. Head to Settings > Safari > Close Tabs and choose to close old tabs after either a day, a week, or a month.
  • Clear out unneeded bookmarks. Open Safari > Bookmarks icon > Edit . Then, tap the red minus icon to quickly remove items from your bookmarks or reading list.

Too many Safari tabs open on your iPhone? Close them all with this trick

Clean up old emails and texts.

I'm guilty of letting my unread email count creep well past the hundreds, but I now try to delete all the junk on a weekly basis to avoid missing an important message. iOS has a few tools to clean up the communication clutter without deleting one email at a time. And, if you download an app for mass unsubscribing junk mail, you can keep those numbers from quickly creeping back up.

  • Delete lots of emails quickly by opening up the email app, then tap Edit > Select All . Go through and unselect any emails that you want to save, then hit the trash button.
  • Consider downloading an app to unsubscribe from junk mail. I use Unroll.Me to quickly unsubscribe from any mass email lists. It's much simpler than unsubscribing the manual by clicking the link at the bottom of each email.
  • Delete old text messages that you no longer need. You can do this in a similar process to deleting emails -- open the Messages app, tap on Edit > Select Messages . Then, select the ones you no longer need and tap Delete.
  • Use iOS 17's new tool to automatically delete two-factor authentication messages by following this guide .

Perform a privacy check-up

The annual spring clean-up is a good time to double-check your privacy settings and ensure that no unnecessary apps are using your information. iOS has a built-in tool for this called Safety Check. Head to Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check . Your iPhone will walk you through the process.

Physically clean the outside of your phone

Scrubbing your iPhone clean of old apps and emails feels great -- but what about the physical exterior of your phone? As often as our phones are in our hands, the devices can get dirty pretty quickly. In fact, you probably want to clean your phone more than once a year during spring cleaning. The question is, how do you disinfect an iPhone without destroying it? Thankfully, Apple lists just what's safe to use when cleaning an iPhone.

First, remove any cases and wash them separately. Dirt build-up inside a case can lead to scratches on your device, so it's a good idea to clean the case both inside and out. Silicon and plastic cases can be soaked in warm water with dish soap and scrubbed with a clean toothbrush. Leather and wood should never be soaked and instead should be cleaned with a slightly camp cloth. Make sure the case, including the microfiber lining, is fully dry before putting it back on your iPhone.

For the phone itself, Apple recommends wiping clean with a lint-free cloth such as a lens cloth used for glasses and screens. This works well for regular cleaning.

For a deeper clean, or, if you did the unthinkable and let your iPhone slip right out of your pocket and into a toilet, disinfecting is in order. Apple recommends using a 70 percent isopropyl alcohol wipe -- you can usually find these in the first aid section at a grocery store or pharmacy. Or, Apple says Clorox disinfecting wipes are also okay, but be sure to get the kind without the abrasive scrubbing materials embedded into the cloth.

Never put moisture in the iPhone's ports or speaker openings. If you have a build-up in these openings, follow our guide to clean an iPhone speaker or clear out an iPhone port .

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

safari icon aesthetic iphone

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

safari icon aesthetic iphone

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

safari icon aesthetic iphone

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

safari icon aesthetic iphone

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

safari icon aesthetic iphone

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

safari icon aesthetic iphone

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

safari icon aesthetic iphone

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.
