11 incredible trips around Spain for train lovers

spain tours by train

The Transcantábrico

The Transcantábrico Train is the oldest and most quintessential luxury tourist train. This route is a dream: travel around the north of Spain, known as Green Spain for its stunning landscapes overflowing with this colour, on board a train that preserves the romanticism of the great trains of the early 20th century but also has modern facilities. It has a more glamorous version, the Transcantábrico Gran Lujo, which goes from San Sebastián to Santiago de Compostela (or vice versa) on an 8-day tour. Travellers can try the cuisine of the Basque Country , Cantabria , Asturias and Galicia , while enjoying gala evenings, live music on board and tickets to museums and monuments with a multilingual guide.

Al-Ándalus Train

People say the Al-Andalus Train is like a palace on wheels. In fact, the carriage-suites are part of the very series constructed to transport the British Royal family between Calais and the Côte d'Azure. Passengers on this train will visit Andalusia over seven days, beginning in Seville and ending in Malaga (or vice versa). The experience of travelling on one of the world's most spacious trains is combined with the chance to try dishes by prestigious chefs and discover cities such as Cadiz, Ronda, Cordoba, Úbeda and Baeza and sights like the Alhambra in Granada.

Galicia

Galicia's tourist trains

Did the previous ideas tempt you to visit Galicia? Then you will be happy to hear that every year in Galicia, they run various themed tourist trains. They usually run between May and October and travel the most beautiful routes, such as the Lighthouses Route, the Mansions and Historic Gardens Route, the Cheese Route, the Monasteries Route, etc. Galician wine has become very famous, and one of the most original ways to try it is on board one of these trains, on routes such as the Rías Baixas Wine Route . Get ready to see through the window landscapes of valleys and vineyards, monasteries hidden among the mountains or incredible coastal landscapes.

La Robla Express

La Robla Express

Still in the north of Spain, for three days and nights this train offers a journey through the nature and culture of the area, for the most part following the Camino de Santiago or St James' Way. The Bilbao and Leon itinerary is a journey usually offered from June to October. Inside, you can expect classic decoration and outside you will see the natural landscape of the north of Spain. And fine dining is an important part of this route.

The Lakes Train

Tren dels Llacs

The landscape on this route is equally stunning. We are going to the province of Lleida (in Catalonia) to travel on the Lakes Train . You have two options: a journey in vintage carriages, which have been lovingly restored, or on board modern, panoramic trains. The route takes you to a multitude of locations and has plenty of activities to take part in. For example, there are stops arranged at one of the oldest liquor factories in Catalonia, a lunch of traditional local dishes, trips to the Gerri de la Sal salt flats, the Castell de Mur, artisan cheesemakers, the Aigüestortes y Estany de Sant Maurici National Park and much more. You can enjoy a trip on this historic train most Saturdays from April to October. The panoramic trains are also available some Saturdays in July and August.

The Cervantes Train

The Cervantes Train

As well as trips over several days there are also interesting day trips. The Cervantes Train departs from Madrid and arrives in the historic city of Alcalá de Henares , the birthplace of the most famous Spanish writer of all time: Miguel de Cervantes. Even the journey itself is interesting as various actors in 17th-century costume accompany the travellers. When you arrive you can visit iconic places in Alcalá such as the Calle Mayor, the University, the Cathedral and, of course, the home of the author of Don Quixote . The train usually runs on Saturdays in the spring and autumn seasons.

Sigüenza Medieval Train

Sigüenza Medieval Train

Sigüenza , known as the “City of the Young Kinght”, is just 130 kilometres from Madrid. It is one of the few places that still has three preserved walls and a surprising medieval feel. The train journey , which departs from Madrid, is brought to life by folk singers, knights and princesses through music and theatre, and it also offers a selection of cakes. Upon arrival in Sigüenza, a tour guide will take you to discover the most important points in the city: the Castle, the Cathedral, the Plaza Mayor square and the Casa del Doncel. You will also be able to try typical dishes such as migas, Castilian soup and the delicious Yemas del Doncel sweets. It usually operates between April and November, not necessarily on weekends.

The Strawberry Train

The Strawberry Train

This is a great idea for the weekends in Spring and Autumn . The route? From Madrid to Aranjuez , a location famous for its delicious strawberries and whose Cultural Landscape is listed as World Heritage. Aranjuez is primarily known for the Royal Palace of Aranjuez and its stunning gardens that are great for walking around. During the journey, you will travel in wooden carriages constructed between 1914 and 1930, and will be offered strawberries to try. Once you arrive in Aranjuez, depending on which itinerary you have chosen, you can visit places such as the Palace or the gardens, or climb aboard a boat or sightseeing bus-train.

Philip II Train

Philip II Train

Passengers are taken to San Lorenzo de El Escorial , just over 50 kilometres from Madrid, in a 20th-century locomotive . Once the train arrives, and depending on the ticket type, the trip includes a guided tour of the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial . This amazing monument was built by Philip II in the 16th century and was considered the “Eighth Wonder of the World”. It houses the Royal Pantheon, the Basilica, the Library, the Hapsburg Palace, etc. That is why walking around inside is an experience worthy of kings. The tour can also include a panoramic route through La Herrería forest or the Casita del Infante gardens.

Sóller Port

Sóller railway

Climbing aboard this period train with wooden carriages is one of the best experiences on the island of Mallorca . The railway itself is really beautiful, but what you can see through its windows is even more so: It leaves the city of Palma , passes through the Serra d'Alfàbia, overcomes a difference in altitude of almost 200 meters and crosses 13 tunnels, several bridges and the Cinc-Ponts viaduct. Once the train reaches the beautiful village of Sóller , the smell of orange blossom mixes with the sea and having a coffee outside with the mountainous landscape in the background is a truly delightful experience.

Black Lagoon Natural Park in Soria

Campos de Castilla Train

We recommend travelling to Soria from Madrid and spending the weekend surrounded by poetry and local cuisine. Taking this train means following in the footsteps of the famous poet Antonio Machado, who lived there more than 100 years ago. Before the train arrives in Soria, in Sigüenza, some “special” passengers get on board: actors who liven up the journey with anecdotes about Machado. Once you reach Soria you can visit the Baroque San Saturio Chapel, the splendid San Juan de Duero Monastery , the ancient city of Numantia and the enigmatic, captivating Black Lagoon. You can take this trip some weekends between May and November.

Spanish trains: A complete guide to travel like a pro (2024)

spanish trains

Spanish trains are fast, reliable, and super comfortable. Whether you want to travel to a long-distance destination or somewhere nearby, Renfe and other railway operators offers you several options.

Ticket fares for most Spanish trains are regulated by a dynamic pricing system. In a nutshell, train ticket prices vary just like any airline fares.

That means that the best way to save money is purchasing your train tickets in advance.

Save time and money getting your train tickets in advance. You can purchase them online in a couple of minutes! If you need it, I wrote a complete guide on how to purchase your Spain train tickets online .

Table of Contents

Check my complete guide to Spanish trains

I love traveling by train. And it’s something that I do very often, especially between Madrid and Seville thanks to Renfe’s wonderful AVE high-speed trains.

Every day I get dozens of emails asking me about train travel in Spain, how to purchase Renfe tickets online and what’s the best itinerary possible using the train. That’s why after many years using Renfe trains myself, I decided to come up with a complete guide related to Spanish trains based on my own experience.

The following section contains all the information that you need to know to make the most out of the Spanish train service.

Here is a complete summary of all the guide:

1. Spain trains: how to travel around like a pro 2. How to buy Spain train tickets online the easy way 3. 7 tricks to get cheap train tickets in Spain 4. Renfe: Spain’s state-owned railway company full guide 5. AVE trains: all about Renfe high-speed trains 6. Combinado Cercanías: get the most out of your free transfer 7. Is the Renfe Spain Pass worth it? My full review 8. Avlo: all about Renfe’s high speed low cost trains 9. OUIGO trains: all about the budget train operator 10. iryo: all about Spain’s low cost rail operator 11. 7 packing tips to comply with your train baggage allowance

Why should you travel using Spanish trains?

Traveling by train is the quintessential method for touring Spain and rightfully so.

It’s romantic. It’s inspiring. Some might say it’s almost magical. And to those of you who don’t live in a country where train travel is prominent, it’s a little mysterious too…

Train is the most comfortable means of transportation to travel around Spain.

The country benefits from a wide railway network, especially in terms of high-speed trains. As a matter of fact, this network covers the main tourist destinations in Spain and is used by millions of travelers each year.

And it has many advantages too!

Benefit from Spain’s high-speed rail competition

Since 2021 there are several open access operators competing with state-owned Renfe on the high-speed network, all bookable online so you can compare prices:

  • Avlo is a low cost subsidiary of Renfe.
  • OUIGO is a low cost subsidiary of SNCF (the French national train company).
  • iryo is a joint venture of Trenitalia (the Italian national rail operator), Globalvia and Air Nostrum

Arrive right in the center of town

Unlike airports, Spanish train stations are most of the time located right in the middle of town.

So compared to getting to/from Madrid Barajas Airport for instance, you don’t have to spend time and money traveling into the city because you’re already there.

Skip long check-in and security lines

Forget about lengthy check-in procedures for train travel – there is no need to go through any security screening.

You can simply show up a few minutes before the train leaves and hop on the car where your seat is.

Spain has a huge rail network and many different trains

Spain’s rail network is huge , and you can travel to even the smallest of towns by train. Most destinations offer multiple trains a day. The most popular routes usually have a train each hour, which really increases your travel options.

It’s a very comfortable way of traveling

Spanish train seats are usually a little larger than planes seats (especially when compared to many low-cost airlines). You’re also free to move about the train whenever you feel like it.

Many trains also have seats that face each other and have a table between the seats. These are perfect for groups or if you just like table space.

Spanish trains are reliable and on schedule

Spanish trains run on schedule well over 90% of the time, while flights are only on schedule around 65%. It makes a huge difference when you are on holidays, don’t you think?

Trains are peaceful and quiet

The train is the perfect place to sit back and relax. There is something very peaceful about staring out the window as you ride silently through the Spanish countryside. The train is also a good time to read a book, write in your journal, or continue planning your future travels.

Renfe has a few luggage restrictions

Although officially Renfe has some luggage restrictions , the truth is I’ve never seen anyone paying extra fees for exceeding weight limits or for multiple pieces of luggage.

Unfortunately, all high-speed trains operators ( Avlo ,  OUIGO and iryo ) are very restrictive.

Enjoy some beautiful views

Spain has a lot of amazing countryside, and traveling by train is a great way to see some fantastic views.

  • The Most Epic Train Journeys...

The 11 Most Epic Train Journeys You Can Experience in Spain

spain tours by train

With the longest fast train network in Europe, Spain allows for getting about in speedy and economical fashion. However, if you like to travel by train for the scenery, there are some truly epic routes across mountains, seaside and the backcountry. Here’s our pick of the best train journeys you can experience in Spain.

1. transcantabrico.

Natural Feature, Historical Landmark

Costa Verde Express

Perhaps the most well-known of the Spanish train routes, the Transcantabrico takes you across northwestern Spain, from the pilgrimage town of Santiago de Compostela to the food capital San Sebastian. What makes the Transcantabrico so remarkable is the possibility of travelling in the Grand Luxe five-star cabins which have their own fine dining restaurant and on-board entertainment in the social carriages. A journey on the Transcantabrico is a holiday in its own right, and expectedly comes with quite a price tag.

2. Barcelona to Montserrat

Monastery, Natural Feature

Montserrat, Spain

3. La Robla

Train Station

Museo Guggenheim de Bilbao, Bilbao, Spain

4. Tren de la Fresa

Architectural Landmark

One of the quirkier train rides in Spain, the Tren de la Fresa runs between Madrid and the town of Aranjuez, famed for its juicy strawberries or fresas in Spanish. The train runs from April to October (except July and August) and follows the route of the second ever Spanish train line, inaugurated over 160 years ago. What really makes the Tren de la Fresa memorable is the fact that passengers are fed strawberries by train workers in 19th century dress before arriving in the UNESCO World Heritage Site town of Aranjuez.

5. Barcelona to A Coruña

6. Costa Blanca Express

Historical Landmark

Costa Blanca, Spain

No longer officially named the Costa Blanca Express, this train route runs between Alicante and the infamous beach resort Benidorm . These days the train is part of the Alicante suburban rail network and makes frequent stops along the coastline of the Costa Blanca. If the thought of exploring Benidorm doesn’t sound quite up your street, opt for the neighbouring town of Villajoyosa, which has retained a more authentic spirit.

7. Bilbao to Santander

8. madrid to oviedo.

Picos De Europa, Spain

Leave the Spanish capital behind and head north to the Asturian capital, Oviedo , on the shores of the Bay of Biscay. This train journey takes you through the heartland of Spain and along one of the country’s most impressive mountain ranges, the Picos de Europa – so named as they are said to have been one of the first things sailors would see on their return to Europe from the Americas.

9. Ronda to Córdoba

chris-unger-DlEC02QXC0Q-unsplash

If the northwest of Spain is marked by verdant pastures and epic coastline, then the south is an altogether different story. If the cities of Seville , Córdoba and Granada are famous for their Moorish architecture, the backcountry is home to the so-called pueblos blancos or ‘white villages’. Explore the beauty and charm of Andalusia by catching the train from the mountain top town of Ronda and winding your way through the mountainous arid landscape.

10. Nuria Valley Rack Railway

Natural Feature

Nuria Valley, Spain

The Núria Valley Rack Railway may only run for 12.5km (7.7 miles), but the journey also climbs a 1,000m (3,280 feet) elevation through the Pyrenees mountains. The Vall de Núria is picture-perfect, with peaceful mid-mountain lakes, diverse wildlife and many species of wild animal to be admired. The rack railway, inaugurated in 1931, is in fact the only the way to access the valley which makes the journey all the more special.

11. Tren dels Llacs

The so-called ‘ Train of the Lakes ‘ is a sightseeing train ride which runs from Lleida in Spain to Saint Girons in France and was first inaugurated in 1929. The train runs along the course of the Noguera Pallaressa and Segre rivers, offering views of the nearby mountains, valley and water reservoirs – hence its name. Highlights include some great birdwatching opportunities, as well as geological and historical sites which can be visited along the way.

It was created in 1983 and already in 2009, the International Society of Railway Travelers included it in the ranking of the 25 best trains in the world. Isabella Noble

In this series, Lonely Planet’s team of writers and editors answers your travel problems and provides tips and hacks to help you plan a hassle-free trip. The train in Spain? That’s one for Barcelona-based, Andalucía-raised travel expert Isabella Noble.

Question: I want to visit a city, an off-the-beaten-track destination and a beach in Spain by train, all in one trip. How can I do it?

Isabella Noble: With a raft of new routes launching, it’s a bumper year for train travel in Spain – and there’s never been a better time to explore the country by rail. Here are two itineraries, in two regions, that will let you see the best of this magical country by train.

“The Milk Sellers” in the Plaza de Trascorrales in Oviedo, Asturias Spain

A slow-paced northern journey

A lesser-known pocket of Spain with divine beaches? Head to the wonderfully green north coast . There’s a go-slow beauty to trundling through this region on the narrow-gauge FEVE railway , hopping off and on as you make your way east from Oviedo. Buy tickets at stations or on board; at the smallest stops you might have to flag trains down, bus-style.

Start with a couple of days in elegant Oviedo , capital of Asturias , whose charms include spectacular pre-Romanesque churches, lively markets, graceful plazas and the memorable Museo de Bellas Artes , along with a thriving food scene (think blue cheeses and crisp ciders). Tierra Astur on the famous Bulevar de la Sidra and Nacho Manzano’s Gloria are favorite local restaurants; consider a stay at the smart Barceló Oviedo Cervantes . Adding to the appeal is a brand-new high-speed AVE train line, expected to (finally) link Oviedo with Madrid later this year.

Next, hop on the FEVE to Arriondas (90 minutes), a peaceful little town in the foothills of the Asturian Picos de Europa mountains. It’s a great base for hiking, with serene rural bases such as Posada del Valle , a restored 19th-century home with its own organic farm.

Aerial view of Ribadesella beach and its estuary, Ribadesella, Asturias, Spain

Next, it’s beach time, via a 50-minute train to Ribadesella on Asturias’ cliff-edged coast. Set on an estuary, Ribadesella is known for its golden beach and wonderful seafood restaurants (try La Huertona ). Come evening, sleep in a thoughtfully converted 20th-century palacete (mansion) at Villa Rosario . There’s a similar feel in nearby Llanes, a buzzing beach town 40 minutes further east. Plenty of gorgeous, remote beaches lie along this stretch of coast (I love Torimbia, Toranda and Gulpiyuri), and the Camino del Norte route of the Camino de Santiago passes through here, too.

From Ribadesella (90 minutes) or Llanes (40 minutes), take the FEVE east to San Vicente de la Barquera , Cantabria ’s prettiest fishing town. The route stays close to the coast between Ribadesella and San Vicente, before turning inland to reach Cantabria’s capital Santander , home to sweeping beaches, the Renzo Piano–designed Centro Botín gallery and lovely boutique B&B Jardín Secreto .

South from Seville

For a taste of magical Andalucía , combine the soulful regional capital Seville with Cádiz Province ’s wildly beautiful Costa de la Luz , with most of your travel on Renfe ’s media distancia trains or cercanías (local commuter trains). You can prebook media distancia tickets; cercanías tickets are easily bought at the station on the day of your travel.

A flamenco dancer in motion, Seville, Andalucía, Spain

Three days is enough time to soak up Seville’s urban delights – the Moorish-origin Real Alcázar , flamenco-filled Triana, the magnificent cathedral – and the thrilling Andalucian tapas scene ( La Brunilda , Eslava , Las Teresas ). Hotel Casa 1800 Sevilla provides an evocative, central base in a reimagined 19th-century mansion. Time permitting, little-visited Carmona makes a wonderful side trip from Seville , with Roman, Moorish and Mudéjar relics; it’s easily reached by bus (75 minutes).

Heading south to Cádiz from Seville, don’t miss a night or two in lively Jerez de la Frontera , center of sherry and flamenco. It’s a one-hour train from Seville’s Santa Justa station to Jerez, where you can stay at stylish Hotel Bodega Tio Pepe , tour ancient bodegas like Lustau or Tradición and dive into the buzzy tabancos (sherry bars).

From Jerez, cercanías (45 minutes) and media distancia and Alvia trains (both 35 minutes) zip onwards to Cádiz , one of Europe’s oldest cities, with its buzzy historic center perched on a wind-lashed headland. Cádiz has a clutch of fabulous golden-white beaches, including Playa de la Caleta (bordering the old town’s Carnival-loving Barrio de La Viña) and surfy Playa de la Victoria , south of the centre. Savor the city’s famous tapas scene at Taberna La Sorpresa , Casa Manteca and the Mercado Central , and stay at Casa de las Cuatro Torres , an 18th-century mansion turned boutique hotel.

Kitesurfers and sunbathers on the beach at Tarifa, Costa de la Lus, Andalucía, Spain

But the Cádiz region’s dreamiest beaches lie southeast of the city, along the blissfully undeveloped Costa de la Luz, which stretches all the way to Tarifa on the southern tip of mainland Europe. No trains run here, but it’s a scenic one-to-two-hour bus trip from Cádiz to the pretty Costa de la Luz hubs of Vejer , Conil and Tarifa – and the powdery white sands, wonderful gastronomy and kitesurfing vibe are the irresistible reward.

The 10 most scenic rail journeys in Spain

T here are few countries where train travel is as cheap , accessible and downright enjoyable as Spain . Much as the locals love to complain about state-run railway company Renfe, the truth is that the lines and rolling stock in Spain are constantly updated and the network reaches into the most remote corners of the country.

Prices are reasonable too, even for the high-speed AVE trains that connect a handful of the major cities. Government funding is generous; a scheme involving free local trains to get people moving after the pandemic has been extended to ease the cost of living crisis, and there are further subsidies on long-distance trains.

Spain’s trains have always been within most budgets, however, and the country’s extensive rail network makes train travel a relaxed way to experience Spain at a gentle pace. The north-west of the country, Madrid , Barcelona and Andalucia , are all particularly well-served, along with the eastern coast from Murcia right up to Alicante, Valencia and beyond.

Complementing this efficient structure criss-crossing the land is a handful of quirky and heritage side routes, often using trains made up of rolling stock from rail travel’s glory days. Some were constructed for the convenience of royalty and local dignitaries, others to transport produce or coal. Some are unabashedly kitsch, staffed by serving wenches and minstrels in medieval ruffs, but will nevertheless delight children as well as railway buffs.

Local tourist boards have also seized the opportunities of regular train lines to create themed routes showing the best of their regions or to access parts of the landscape that would be impossible to reach by car.

This is all great news for the sustainable traveller, and the journeys below are unforgettable experiences in themselves.

Tren de la Fresa

Start point: Museo del Ferrocarril, Madrid

End point: Aranjuez

Madrid’s first train line was opened originally in 1851 as a way for the Spanish Royal Family to travel between the capital and their spring residence, the elegant Royal Palace in Aranjuez, about 30 miles south of the city. The train once cut through fields of strawberries (fresas – hence the train’s name) and this special service includes a strawberry tasting on the return leg, with servers in period costume. The rolling stock is made up of carriages from different periods, comprising wooden, open-sided passenger coaches and two 1920s dining cars. The train takes around an hour, and leaves from Madrid’s Museo del Ferrocarril at weekends in spring and autumn. It can include walking, tourist train or boat tours of Aranjuez and its spectacular palace and gardens.

How to do it:  Stay at the colourful Only You Hotel (doubles from £188 per night; 00 34 9100 52746; onlyyouhotels.com ), close to the railway museum. Plan the perfect trip to Madrid with our guide.

Tren dels Llacs

Start point: Lleida

End point: La Pobla del Segur

The “Lake Train” meanders up into the foothills of the Pyrenees from the quiet city of Lleida, known for its looming cathedral and its annual snail-eating festival. The train is a 1960s diesel locomotive in jaunty green and yellow trim, with a vintage mail carriage and dining car. It runs along the banks of the rivers Segre and Noguera Pallaresa on a single-track railway, passing the four lakes (reservoirs, strictly speaking), to the town of La Pobla del Segur. The journey takes just under two hours and the train runs on Saturdays from April to October.

How to do it:  Stay at the stately Parador de Lleida (doubles from £83 per night; 00 34 9730 04866; parador.es ), set in a 17th-century convent, with rooms around the former cloister

Start point: La Tor de Querol

End point: Villefranche de Conflent

The jolly little “yellow train”, also known as the Canary, is a French/Catalan concern, beginning at the station of La Tor de Querol on the border between France and Spain and running up through the eastern Pyrenees through 63km of mountainous landscape and over vertiginous viaducts and a dizzying suspension bridge. It runs between four and nine times a day and is best taken in summer, when you can sit in one of the open-topped carriages. Passengers can embark from any one of its 22 stations, or settle down for the full three-hour route from La Tor de Querol to Villefranche-de-Conflent.

How to do it:  Stay in nearby Puigcerdà for a wider range of eating and sleeping options. Try the smart Villa Paulita (doubles from £63 per night; 00 34 9728 84622; villapaulitahotel.com )

Mr Henderson’s Railway

Start point: Algeciras

End point: Ronda

The train that runs from Algeciras to Ronda might not be historically interesting in itself, but the story behind the line is a fascinating one. It took place in the late 19 th century, when bored British officers garrisoned at Gibraltar were frustrated with the difficulties of travelling into Spain and a British financier, Sir Alex Henderson, stepped in. With the help of a British engineer they created a single-track line through difficult terrain and bandit country. Regular Renfe (the state-owned railway) trains still run along here today, through magnificent scenery – described by Michael Portillo as “one of the most picturesque train journeys in Europe”.

How to do it:  Stay at one of the luxury hotels specially constructed to house the passengers at the time: the Hotel Reina Cristina (doubles from £50 per night; 00 34 9566 02622; globalesreinacristinahotel.com-hotel.com ) in Algeciras, or the Catalonia Reina Victoria (doubles from £127 per night; 00 34 9528 71240; cataloniahotels.com ) in Ronda

Ferrocarril de Sóller

Start point: Plaça de Espanya, Palma de Mallorca

End point: Sóller

Built in 1912 to transport fruit from Sóller’s citrus groves, this narrow-gauge line now serves to carry daytrippers to and from Palma de Mallorca in a wooden train with mahogany panels and brass fittings. The train runs several times a day and connects with the similarly picture-book tram from the town of Sóller to its port. The hour-long journey takes passengers north out of Palma past olive plantations and oak forests, through tunnels and over viaducts, into the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana.

How to do it:  Stay at the Sóller Plaza (doubles from £123 per night; 00 34 8712 01 188; hotelsollerplaza.com ) overlooking the café terraces of the town’s main square. Plan the perfect holiday in Palma de Mallorca with our guide.

Tren de Felipe II

Start point: Príncipe Pío station, Madrid

End point: El Escorial

Named for the fanatically devout Philip II, who built the vast and austere monastery at San Lorenzo de El Escorial, this handsome green 1960s diesel locomotive with yellow art deco “speed whiskers” is one of Spain’s finest, and pulls a series of 1940s carriages patrolled by actors in period dress. It leaves Madrid once a day at weekends, and cuts through the Sierra de Guadarrama to the town of El Escorial (the ticket includes entry to the monastery). The journey time is 50 minutes.

How to do it:  Stay at the Exe Victoria Palace (doubles from £65 per night; 00 34 9189 67066; eurostarshotels.co.uk ) in El Escorial. It is set in an 18th-century palace close to the monastery. Plan the perfect trip to Madrid with our guide

The Rack Trains

Start point: Ribes de Freser/Monistrol

End point: Vall de Núria/Montserrat

Catalunya has two rack trains; one at the monastery of Montserrat and the other in the foothills of the Pyrenees at the Vall de Núria. The first was opened in 1892, created to whisk pilgrims from the town of Monistrol up the mountain to the sacred Montserrat monastery, and is still used to this day, though mostly by daytrippers. The train at Núria slices up through glorious scenery from the pretty little town of Ribes de Freser to the mountain resort of Núria, set around an impressive lake. Both run frequently, every day.

How to do it:  Stay in Barcelona for Montserrat, taking a train out from Plaça d’Espanya, but in Ribes de Freser try the cosy,  family-run Els Caçadors de Ribes (doubles from £64 per night; 00 34 9727 27006; hotelelscacadorsderibes.com-hotel.com ).

Trenes Turísticos de Galicia

Start/end points: Various

14 routes, traversed by small, modern trains, are a stress-free way to see the best of this uniquely verdant corner of Spain. The rides come with guides and are loosely themed around traditional Galician sights: lighthouses, monasteries, gardens, wine and of course the Camino de Santiago pilgrims’ route. There is even a route based around fishing and the lamprey, a gruesome prehistoric-looking creature that resembles an eel and tastes surprisingly good. Tourist train ticket holders are eligible for the Galicia Rail Pass, which allows unlimited further travel through the region for a period of three days.

How to do it:  Stay at the Parador Hostal dos Reis Católicos (doubles from £261 per night, including breakfast; 00 34 9815 82200; parador.es ) in Santiago de Compostela.

Tren del Vino

Start point: Chamartín station, Madrid/Segovia

End point: Valladolid

The “Wine Train” is actually a series of trains running between Madrid or Segovia and Valladolid, an undervisited city in the northwestern region of Castilla y León. The trains on this occasion are gleaming and modern, whisking visitors through the different wine provinces entitled to the protected label of ‘ denominación de origen’ : Ribera del Duero, Rueda, Toro and Cigales. The routes run through vineyards and past winemaking bodegas , and the price includes wine tastings, guided tours and lunch. Join departures on the first Saturday of the month from February to November.

How to do it:  Stay, if you can, in the fairy-tale town of Segovia, at the atmospheric La Casa Mudéjar (doubles from £84 per night; 00 34 9214 66250; lacasamudejar.com )

Tren de Arganda

Start point: Estación-Museo del Tren de Arganda, Arganda del Rey

End point: Laguna del Campillo

“The Arganda train whistles more than it moves” as the saying goes. Straight from the pages of a children’s book, these two century-old steam locomotives pull vintage passenger carriages along a four-kilometre track from Arganda del Rey to the Laguna del Campillo, a short train ride south of Madrid, crossing the wrought-iron bridge that was at the centre of the infamous Battle of Jarama during the Spanish Civil War. The train runs four times a day, on the first Saturday of the month and every Sunday in spring and autumn.

How to do it:  Stay in Madrid at the NH Madrid Atocha (doubles from £85 per night; 00 34 9153 99400; nh-hotels.com )

Need to know

Spain’s extremes of temperature mean that some of these services, particularly those with open-topped carriages, do not always run at the height of summer or in the depths of winter, but otherwise do not require too much forward-planning.

The Spanish train system

Renfe is the national train operator, with a network of long-distance, regional and local commuter trains (known as Cercanías) covering every region of the country. Trains are comfortable and generally punctual, with WiFi and sockets on most longer routes. For medium and long-distance trains it’s wise to book in advance, online or at a station. Cercanías rarely cost more than a few euros, but you can also buy 10-journey tickets, which reduce the price further.

Those planning an extended stay in Spain might investigate the Renfe Spain Pass. Available to non-residents, it is valid for four, six, eight or 10 medium or long-distance journeys and lasts for a period of a month. See renfe.com .

From city weekends to island escapes, here's where to go in Spain

spain holiday destinations

The country is home to various island groups, too. The Balearics, consisting of Mallorca , Menorca, Ibiza and lesser-visited Formentera, are perfect holiday choices. Ibiza may have a rowdy reputation, but in reality the island has a much more serene side and Dalt Vila, its hilltop old town, is beautiful.

And Mallorca may be a more popular choice, but Menorca is just as captivating, with its charming port towns and rural retreats – we love Villa Le Blanc Gran Meliá on the Santo Tomàs seafront.

Over in the volcanic Canary Islands , there are more sunny Spanish holiday destinations to choose from, including old favourites Lanzarote and Tenerife , the latter of which has a dream hotel for foodies in the form of the Ritz-Carlton Abama .

And in the heart of Andalucia, Hacienda de San Rafael is the perfect base if you're hoping to explore Seville and its imposing Gothic cathedral.

Read on for the best destinations in Spain for a summer holiday.

For a holiday in Spain with a more dramatic than average landscape, try Lanzarote, with its volcanoes, lava fields, black and red earth, and intriguing rock formations. It also has whitewashed houses, palm groves and, of course, beautiful beaches. Away from the coast, don’t miss the charming villages inland.

The island has been designated a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO – to really appreciate the Mars-like scenery, head into the Timanfaya National Park, or book a trip to the Montañas del Fuego (which means Mountains of Fire) to see the volcanic cones, curious geology and lava fields.

Where to stay: In the smart Playa del Cable area of the island’s capital Arrecife, Hotel Villa Vik is an adults-only boutique retreat where you’ll feel like part of the family.

It’s not hard to see why Mallorca is such a classic Spanish holiday destination for Brits. The island has it all, from a vibrant capital and gorgeous beach resorts, to the spectacular Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, lively port towns such as Sóller and inland villages favoured by artists such as Deià.

Palma has a charming old town, an imposing Gothic cathedral and lots of excellent restaurants. From there, you can catch an old-fashioned tram all the way to Sóller for lunch at one of the restaurants lining the harbour.

Where to stay: A Belmond outpost in Deià in the island’s north-west, La Residencia is one of the most luxurious hotels on Mallorca, with peaceful gardens, a superb spa and several hundred works by local painters.

Another island within the Canary archipelago, Tenerife has a landscape that’s as mesmerising and unusual as its counterpart Lanzarote. It’s the biggest of the Canary Islands, which are off the coast of West Africa, and home to the looming Mount Teide, a dormant volcano and the loftiest peak in Spain.

As it’s a volcanic island, some of the beaches have black sand, but there are regular golden shores, too.

Where to stay: The Ritz-Carlton Abama is the ultimate place for fine-dining on Tenerife, since it’s the proud owner of several Michelin stars, spread across its many restaurants, which include Basque and Japanese options.

A cultural city with its own beach, Barcelona is a Spanish holiday destination that lets you combine a city and seaside break. High-brow highlights include the Picasso museum, the art nouveau La Sagrada Familia and Gaudi’s other great Barcelona work, Park Güell.

After winding your way through the Gothic Quarter’s narrow medieval lanes (and its restaurants and bars), you can put your feet up at the beach.

Another Balearic beauty, Menorca gets slightly less footfall than its neighbours Mallorca and Ibiza, but it shouldn’t be overlooked. Stay at a rustic finca on a farm and enjoy the bucolic backdrop; or check in to one of its many renovated historic hideaways and boutique guesthouses. Menorca’s retty port towns include Mahón and Ciutadella.

This wild, rugged island has a serene, sleepy pace. Enjoy the peaceful pine-lined coast with its sandy beaches and rocky coves, and the island’s towns set above ancient harbours.

Where to stay: Villa Le Blanc Gran Meliá is a five-star resort steps from the sand on the south coast, with white-washed architecture, an infinity pool surrounded by bars and restaurants, and a spa where you can book in for Anne Semonin treatments.

On the mainland, Marbella is one of the major holiday destinations within the southern province of Andalusia. The Costa del Sol resort has a backdrop of the Sierra Blanca mountains and a vast 27-kilometre stretch of shoreline. As well as its beautiful beaches, the area is known for its golf courses.

The coast is also home to the aptly named Golden Mile (a stretch of some serious real estate), which leads down to Puerto Banús marina, with its staggering super-yachts and fancy restaurants.

Where to stay: If you’re aiming to eat well while you’re in town, booking a stay at the Nobu outpost will be a sensible move, especially if you want to enjoy the brand’s famous black cod miso.

It may have a somewhat rowdy reputation (which isn’t totally unjustified), but there’s another side to Ibiza, away from the super-clubs (of which there are indeed many) on the San Antonio strip. The island has long-attracted spiritual sorts, here for the magnetism and the sunsets, which are a ritual every evening.

In the hillside Dalt Vila (or Old Town), stroll the cobbled streets, or head to quieter villages, such as Santa Gertrudis, which has brilliant boutiques, traditional bars and excellent restaurants such as Bottega Il Buco.

Where to stay: If you’re here for hedonism in the form of food, book a stay at Oku , which has a superb Japanese restaurant where the chef is known to wander over to your seat to cook tableside. It has a robata grill and a raw bar, as well as a sake selection, for added authenticity.

Often overlooked by tourists for Barcelona, Spain’s capital may not have beaches but it has plenty of landmarks, from its wide boulevards and pristine parks to its incredible culture. At the Prado Museum, visitors can admire works by Spanish masters including Velázquez and Goya.

Another highlight of Madrid is the Plaza Mayor, the city’s main square, which dates back to the 15th century. The grand Royal Palace is also worth a visit – in between tapas pit-stops, of course.

Where to stay: Rosewood Villa Magna is on the Paseo de la Castellana, a major thoroughfare that runs through the city, so you’ll be perfectly placed to explore the main sights.

Gran Canaria

Another holiday destination in Spain that’s part of the far-flung Canary Islands, Gran Canaria has a similar landscape to its neighbours, with black-lava beaches (as well as white-sand ones), a colourful capital, Las Palmas, and a mountainous interior.

For buzzy nightlife, head to Playa del Inglés on the southern coast; or marvel at the scenery of the Maspalomas Dunes overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

Where to stay: Salobre Hotel Resort & Serenity is a five-star resort that has two 18-hole golf courses – and there are buggies ready for you at reception. The peaceful Maspalomas retreat also has an excellent wellness centre, a shuttle service to whisk you to the beach and cabanas around the pool.

There are lots of lovely places to visit in Andalucia, but Seville is one of the most popular and with good reason. For a start, warm weather is all but guaranteed – the Spaniards don’t call it the ‘Frying Pan’ for nothing.

The city’s old town and former Jewish quarter, Barrio de Santa Cruz, is home to the huge Gothic cathedral, the Alcázar Palace and the La Giralda bell tower. For a lively night out, visit one of Seville’s famous flamenco shows or a hole-in-the-wall bar. And if you’re hoping to stockpile ceramics, stop by the Tirana neighbourhood, which has lots of pottery studios.

Where to stay: An hour or so’s drive south of the city (but worth it for the peace and quiet), Hacienda de San Rafael is an 18th-century hideaway on an olive estate in the Andalusian countryside. It’s roughly halfway between Seville and Jerez, so you’ll be able to visit both cities during your stay.

Travelers Should Be Extra Mindful of Pickpockets in These European Countries, Study Shows

The study also mentioned specific attractions where pickpockets may be most prevalent.

spain tours by train

Getty Images

Nothing can ruin a vacation like being the victim of a pickpocketing scam. Throughout Europe specifically, a new study shows that there are some destinations where theft is more prevalent than others.

Travelers to Italy should be on their guard since the country ranked the highest for pickpockets among all popular European hotspots, according to a recent study by UK insurance price comparison platform Quotezone.co.uk . To determine the ranking, the study looked at pickpocketing mentions in visitor reviews at popular attractions like the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, and Pantheon in Rome, the Duomo di Milano in Milan, and the Gallerie Degli Uffizi in Florence.

Overall, Italy had 478 pickpocketing mentions for every million British visitors, the highest of countries studied in Europe, according to the report.

“Theft can happen anywhere and tourist hotspots are convenient places for criminals to target holidaymakers’ wallets and purses whilst they are busy taking in the sites,” Greg Wilson, the founder and CEO of Quotezone.co.uk, said in a statement. “It is essential always to remain vigilant, leave valuables, like expensive [jewelry], in a safe in the hotel and always travel with a secure cross-body bag with zips to secure phones and wallets or even a money belt.”

Travelers heading to France should also be aware of their surroundings since the country ranked second on the list with 251 mentions of being pickpocketed for every million British visitors. That’s especially true for the area around Paris’ most iconic structure, the Eiffel Tower, which the study found was the worst for pickpockets in the country.

That was followed by Spain — and particularly Barcelona’s Las Ramblas — and Germany, which each saw 111 mentions of being pickpocketed for every million British visitors.

On the other end of the spectrum was Ireland, which had only seven mentions of pickpocketing for every million British visitors, according to the study. Where you want to watch out for your bag is the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin, a notorious tourist trap but a worthwhile one nonetheless .

If you do get pickpocketed, Wilson encouraged travelers to file a police report to be covered for any possible insurance claims.

It’s also a good idea to make copies of important documents and make sure all your devices are password-protected.

And remember: you’re not alone. Even the most seasoned travelers can fall victim to pickpockets, just like Rick Steves did when he wasn't wearing his money belt on the Paris Metro a few years ago.

Verano Joven Programme 2024: how to apply for bus and train ticket discounts

News - 2024.6.24

The second edition of the Verano Joven programme reactivates discounts for young people aged between 18 and 30 years to travel around Spain and Europe by bus and train between 1 July and 30 September.

25/06/2024. Verano Joven Programme 2024. Verano Joven Programme 2024

On June 4 last, the Council of Ministers approved the launch of the second edition of the Verano Joven (Summer for Young People) programme, an initiative created in 2023 to promote the use of public transport among young people, boosting their learning and strengthening European sentiment.

A total of €130 million will be used to finance discounts of up to 90 % on single and return tickets on state bus and rail services, and the Interrail Pass for rail travel in Europe.

Who are the beneficiaries of the Verano Joven programme?

The beneficiaries are young people with Spanish nationality or who are legally resident in Spain, born between 1 January 1994 and 31 December 2006 (i.e., aged between 18 and 30).

How to register to access the Verano Joven programme discounts?

Potential beneficiaries must register with their DNI, NIE or passport in the space provided on the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility's website .

If the requirements of the programme are met, once registered, beneficiaries will receive a personal and non-transferable code to be used to purchase the Interrail Pass and discounted train and bus tickets on the websites of the respective operators. The code, consisting of the DNI or NIE number and a set of characters, will be sent to the mobile phone or email provided if the young person meets all the requirements. The code is valid for the entire period, and all means of transport are included.

You must register 24 hours before the first ticket is issued. Registration is free of charge, although companies may charge a handling fee for the issuing of discounted tickets, subject to a limit of €1 per ticket.

Young people must use a certified electronic system, such as Cl@ve , or enter their name and surname (as stated on the DNI or NIE), date of birth and the number and date of validity of the DNI; or the date and validity of the NIE, together with the support number of the EU Citizen Register or Foreigners' Identity Card (TIE) as appropriate, as well as the nationality and the municipality of residence.

What are the discounts for travel in Spain and Europe?

  • 90% discount for regular state bus services
  • 90% discount on conventional medium-distance and metric gauge services
  • 50% discount on Avant single tickets
  • 50 % discount, up to a maximum of €30 per ticket, for long distance or high speed commercial services
  • 50% discount on the Global Flexible option of the 10-day over 2 months Interrail Pass, when marketed through Renfe . The discount is applied on the official Interrail fares, with their price features according to age, etc.

spain tours by train

Conditions and penalties

There are a number of conditions to avoid misuse of discount tickets. For example, the use of the registration code by a person other than the registered beneficiary will be directly sanctioned. In this case, the person intending to travel will be deemed not to have a valid ticket and fines of up to €750 for rail transport and up to €200 for bus transport may be imposed.

In addition, the registration code may be withdrawn from beneficiaries who accumulate more than six detected misuses, whether on rail or road transport. The company will give advance warning of any misuse by SMS message to the mobile phone or registered email address, and of the possible consequences of the misuse.

The following cases are considered as misuse:

  • Failure to cancel a trip that has been formalised and not made at least 24 hours in advance. The company may reduce this period in accordance with its usual marketing and sales practices.
  • In the case of state bus lines, the concessionary company may reduce this 24-hour time limit for short journeys where most of them are for regular mobility. To this effect, changing tickets on these journeys will not be considered misuse.
  • Violation of the established condition that the code is personal and non-transferable.

The booking of more than one return journey per day for the same origin-destination with the same rail or bus company will not be allowed unless the first journey has been made or cancelled in advance.

Travelling in Europe: the Interrail Pass

Interrail is a personal, non-transferable pass that can be purchased and used by residents of most European countries to travel by train in 33 European countries (or by boat between Italy and Greece). There are two types:

  • Interrail Global Pass: allows you to travel in several countries. Continuous (valid for 15 days, 22 days, 1 month, 2 months or 3 months) or flexible (valid for 4, 5 or 7 days in 1 month or 10 or 15 days in 2 months).
  • Interrail One Country Pass: focuses the journey on one country only, except for the country of residence.

The discount established for the Interrail Pass in the Young Summer 2024 programme will be 50% when marketed through Renfe and will be applied to the Global flexible option of 10 days in 2 months.

TRAVELLERS can make their way around one of the most popular European holiday destinations very affordably this summer, after a train operator launched a new ticket sale.

Some tickets are as low as €7 which works out at not much more than a fiver, making it easy and cheap to see as much of the country as possible.

Cheap train tickets are available on routes across Spain this summer

Spain's state railway operator Renfe has launched the new ' Superprecios' fares this summer .

They allow affordable travel between various destinations from July 22 until September 8.

The aim of the campaign is to get more people travelling by train, reducing emissions from cars and easing pressure on roads created during the summer months created by the influx of tourists.

Tickets were launched yesterday (Monday June 24) and are available to purchase on the Renfe website, as well as from stations until July 1.

Meanwhile, tickets from the Spanish capital to Malaga and Huelva are available for €24 (£20) and trips from Madrid to Cadiz will start at €34 (£28).

Elsewhere, tickets on routes between Madrid and Barcelona , Lleida and Camp de Tarragona, Seville, Granada, Algeciras, Almeria and Extremadura are all on sale from €18 (£15).

The rail company explained that its daily circulation of trains (passenger and freight) "prevents the emission of 4.1 million tons of CO2 each year".

They added: "Renfe has the 'Carbon Neutral' certification granted by AENOR for all our electric trains, both passenger and freight, which highlights the commitment to sustainability ."

The cheap tickets are available to all passengers throughout the summer, making it a great way to explore the cities of Spain this year.

Three of the country's cities featured on Travel Supermarket' s list of best European city break destinations to visit this year.

They include Madrid, Barcelona and Seville where tourists are recommended to "allow some time to sample some of the city’s world-famous tapas in a traditional bar or two, before watching a flamenco show until the small hours".

Everything you need to know about visiting Spain

  • Brits must have at least three months left on their passport from the day they plan to leave the country.
  • Tourists do not need a visa if visiting for up to 90 days in an 180-day period.
  • Make sure your passport is stamped on entry and exit.
  • Travellers may be asked to show hotel booking confirmations and that they have enough money for their stay at the border.
  • Spain is one hour ahead of the UK.
  • The country uses the euro with around €10 working out to £8.55.
  • Flights to Spain from the UK take between 2-4 hours depending on the destination.

The price of a pint in Seville is around £2.14, while Barcelona isn't much more expensive at £2.50.

Madrid has the most expensive beers from the three destinations, but it is still hardly breaking the bank, with a pint costing around £2.75.

Return flights to Spain aren't too expensive either, starting around £56, with budget airlines like Ryanair , easyJet and Iberia Express all linking the UK to the popular holiday spot.

Spain is the most popular travel destination for Brits, with close to 18 million travellers from the UK heading there in 2023.
