Chanderi Fort Trek

Chanderi Fort Trek is situated near Thane in Badlapur region of Maharashtra. It is not actually a fort as there are no fortifications but there are some water cisterns, caves and rock cut steps. As The route to Chanderi fort is very difficult it seems that this place was used as a military base.

The history for this fort is not very well documented, however it is worth mentioning as the jewel in the crown of forts in the district of Raigad. Remnants of fortification can be found near the caves. This is probably the only feature that may classify Chanderi as a fort. In 1656 Shivaji Maharaj won over all territory up to Kalyan-Bhiwandi-Rairi This was when this fort came under the rule of the Marathas. Low water storage areas and  absence of significant constructions that rather than a fort, this was possibly a military base.

The shape of Chanderi is very unique and can be easily seen from anywhere as a really beautiful mountain. It looks like a table top with a lot of pinnacles clubbed together. The pinnacle is highly weathered because of erosion from high heat and cool rains. Mhaismal or Mhasmal is Chanderi’s twin pinnacle and the two are seperated from the Khind or col which is the lowest point. One can see a path going towards Mhasmal from the Col, however it is full of scree and ends abruptly. The Khind is around 470m above sea level where as the caves of Chanderi is around 650m.

The caves and rock cut steps are similar to ones on Kalavantin Durg or Gorakhgad. There is an idol of lord Shiva inside the cave. A reservoir of potable water is very close to the cave. Water in this cistern is potable but available only till the month of October. The cave can comfortably house 8 to 10 people at a time making it a good camping spot. There’s a portion of the cave which is tiled. A water cistern of is situated at the base of the pinnacle.

The highest part of the fort is 710m. Chanderi provides excellent view of all the surrounding forts making it as a vantage point or watch tower in those days. Prabalgad , Kalavantin Durg , Irshalgad , Karnala , Nakind, Vikatgad, Matheran, Mhaismal, Haji Malang, Tavli, Navra Navri are some of the prominent mountains that can be easily made out from the top of Chanderi. On the oter end of the hill a statue of Shivaji Maharaj is placed.

The plateau beneath the Chanderi fort trek is enchanting in the monsoons and many tourists travel here to enjoy the waterfalls.

The trek to Chanderi starts from either of two villages, from Tamsai (Panvel) or from Chinchavli (Vangani, Badlapur). The route from Chinchavli is longer as compared to Tamsai but it is easily accessible and close to railway station. One can park their cars just before the village as the village is very small.

Chanderi is an indomitable fort. It is easy to lose your way, as a major part of the trek is through a dense forest. Trekking groups have marked arrows and piled rocks to indicate the route. There are very high chances of missing these signs as well and it is recommended to take a local from the village as a guide on this trek.

The trail climbs gradually till a huge plateau with lots of rocks and boulders. One has to trek the Nlichi Vat or the river route till Khind. The climb is tiring in summer but very refreshing in monsoon. One has to also cross a small waterfall and a stream on the way up. Once you reach the Khind, the trail to Tamsai, Panvel can be seen. From the col, the left goes to Chanderi and the right to the 4 pinncale cluster, Mhasmal. The trail to the left takes you to the caves in 15 minutes.

As the approach to the top is very dangerous, trekkers generally hike only till the caves. Erosion of rocks and frequent landslides have made reaching the top very difficult and risky. The climb is inclined at 80 degrees and is full of scree. Professional trekkers do not need a rope for this climb however it is always advisable to carry one and take a guide along.

Just recently around 40 trekkers were stranded on the way up in monsoon. The heavy rains and cloud cover made navigating the path really difficult for them. There was one casualty. One should should not go beyond the caves in the monsoon season.

How to reach

One can reach Vangani from Mumbai. The road is not in the best of condition but is convenient. It takes about 20 minutes to reach Chinchvali, the base village from here. If travelling by train, one can alight at Vangani station or Badlapur station as both are convenient railheads to reach this fort. Both these stations are on the Central railway line. Private vehicles or rickshaws from the stations will reach you till the base village – Chinchvali.

Chanderi Fort, Panvel Overview

Located in the Matheran district of Maharashtra, the Chanderi Fort is a historical monument which can be reached by taking a short trek to the hilltop. This day-long trek in the Kalyan area is a breather for people from Mumbai, Pune and the nearby regions, and the fort is as famous as the trek that leads to it. From the top of this ancient fort, one can view the surrounding forts of Prabalgad, Nakind, Kalavantin, Irshalgad, Karnala, Vikatgad, Mhaismal, Matheran, Haji Malang, Tavli and Navra Navri, and also the Western Ghats far behind in all their glory.

This mighty fort is located near Thane in the Badlapur region, and interestingly, this structure is not really a fort! There are no fortifications at the site, but only water cisterns, rock cut steps and caves that denote that the historical site is indeed a fort. Chanderi Fort was captured by Shivaji Maharaj from the Mughal Sultanate, and ultimately it went into the hands of the British later on. This fortress is often used as a military base, or a hideout since the path that leads up to it is challenging and tiresome. The fort offers the best of both worlds and appeals to both history lovers as well as adventure enthusiasts since it provides visitors with breathtaking views, excellent historical information, as well as an adrenaline rush.

A little about CHANDERI FORT

Location: Amidst the lush green vegetation surrounding the mountain ranges of Nakhind and Mhaismaal, Chanderi Fort emerges like a masterpiece crafted with natures best hands. Situated at a height of 2,330 ft, the hill fort, now in ruins, offers a beautiful view of the surrounding area as well as presents one of the toughest trek routes around Mumbai. Although worth mentioning as the jewel in the crown of forts in the district of Raigad, there is no significant history attached to this fort. Near the caves on the fort are visible some remnants of fortification. This is the only sign to designate Chanderi as a fort. Chanderi is famous for water streams and its difficult route. In monsoon route gets thrilling with water flow and tricky.

In May 1656 Raje Shivaji Maharaj conquered all the territory up to kalyan-Bhivandi-rairi. This was when this fort came under the rule of Marathas. Lack of development, Low water storage areas, absence of significant constructions, limited facilities for people to stay and extremely difficult approach road seems to suggest that rather than a fort, this was possibly a military base.

The Great Escapers

Not all who wander are lost, chanderi fort trek - most challenging and difficult hiking in maharashtra.

Chanderi Fort located at Chanderi in Ashoknagar District of Madhya Pradesh state in India is situated at a distance of 127 km from Shivpuri and 37 km from Lalitpur and about 45 km from Esagarh and 38 km from Mungoali It is located on a hill southwest of the Betwa River. Chanderi is surrounded by hills, lakes and forests and there are several monuments of the Bundela Rajputs and Malwa sultans. Chanderi finds mention in Mahabharata. Shishupal was the king of Mahabharata period.

Chanderi is located strategically on the borders of Malwa and Bundelkhand. History of Chanderi goes back to the 11th century, when it was dominated by the trade routes of Central India and was proximate to the arterial route to the ancient ports of Gujarat as well as to Malwa, Mewar, Central India and the Deccan. Consequently, Chanderi became an important military outpost.

Chanderi Fort, a vast Mughal fort, dominates the skyline of the lovely old town of Chanderi. The main gate of the fort is known as the "Khooni Darwaza". Chanderi fort is situated on a hill 71 meter above the town. The fortification walls were constructed mainly by the Muslim rulers of Chanderi. To the southwest of the fort there is a curious gateway called katti-ghatti made through a hill side.

Chanderi is mentioned by the Persian scholar Alberuni in 1030. Ghiyas ud din Balban captured the city in 1251 for Nasiruddin Mahmud, Sultan of Delhi. Sultan Mahmud Khilji of Malwa captured the city in 1438 after a siege of several months. In 1520 Rana Sangha of Mewar captured the city, and gave it to Medini Rai, a rebellious minister of Sultan Mahmud II of Malwa. The Mughal Emperor Babur captured the city from Medini Rai, and in 1540 it was captured by Sher Shah Suri, and added to the governorship of Shujaat Khan. The Mughal Emperor Akbar made the city a sarkar in the subah of Malwa. The Bundela Rajputs captured the city in 1586, and it was held by Ram Sab, a son of Raja Madhukar of Orchha. In 1680 Devi Singh Bundela was made governor of the city with his commander in chief and prime minister of chanderi state Maharaja Chaubey Bhim singh, and Chanderi remained in the hands of his family until it was annexed in 1811 by Jean Baptiste Filose for the Maratha ruler Daulat Rao Sindhia of Gwalior. The city was transferred to the British in 1844. The British lost control of the city during the Revolt of 1857, and the city was recaptured by Sir Hugh Rose on February 14, 1858. Richard Harte Keatinge was awarded the Victoria Cross for leading this assault. The city was transferred back to the Sindhias of Gwalior in 1861, and became part of Isagarh District of Gwalior state. After India's independence in 1947, Gwalior became part of the new state of Madhya Bharat, which was merged into Madhya Pradesh on November 1, 1956.

Chanderi Fort is located near Chinchavli Village which is about 10km from Vangani railway station and 16km from Badlapur Railway station.

The surrounding of the fort does not look like a fortification. Basically, it was used as a watchtower. Trek to Chanderi Fort is much well-known activity from the area of Matheran range. This fort is located close to Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. There are two routes to reach the Chanderi Fort. One is from Tamsai village which is 20 km from Panvel, Raigad district, and another is Chinchavali at Vangani, Badlapur.

How to Reach Chanderi Fort

There is no air service available to reach directly to the Chanderi fort. The nearest air service is located at Mumbai International airport at a distance of 60 km from the location. One can take a self-drive car from the airport to reach the fort or you can also option for local transport till base village Tamsai at Panvel or Chinchavali at Vangani within the Mumbai.

There are two routes to reach the fort. You can either travel to Panvel station on the Harbour line or Vangani, Badlapur on the central line of Mumbai. The fort is accessible in both ways, from Vangani is within walkable distance. If you are traveling from Panvel then hire tumtum from Panvel depot. The distance is 16 km.

Easy road connectivity is available to reach the base village of the fort. You can take your vehicle to the base village and park. Two-wheelers and four-wheelers can be taken to the base village. From there you have to walk till the summit point.

My Trekking Experience of Chanderi Fort

This was all started with a random discussion with my friend. We were discussing the necessity to be away from regular boring life. Post second covid wave when a lockdown was lifted out, we made a plan to trek to Chanderi Fort from Panvel district. The distance was not more than 30 km for me. We managed to reach the base village with all precautions and started the trek at 9 am in morning from village Tamsai. As we started to move further, the fort was clearly visible from the base village. As the monsoon had recently hit Maharashtra; the climate was wind chilled with little raindrops and a 360-degree view of greenery. Monsoon is the best season for trekking in any corner of Maharashtra. It does not only offer the greenery but one can be engaged with the gorgeous view of the sky, shimmering waterfall pouring a massive amount of water on the rocky surface.

The initial route passes from the village Tamsai. There is no diversion so one doesn’t need to worry. You need to cross a small water stream at a distance of 5 min from the base village. A flat plateau welcomes the trekkers with the view of Chanderi Fort hidden in the clouds. After walk for 10 min, the trail opens up into the dense forest. The human trail is the only way one needs to follow to ascend. Though it is a human-made trail, it is clearly visible. There is an arrow marked at someplace on the trees. Following the same trail will take you to a more dense forest. One can witness the magic of nature along with clouds playing hide and seek games. Colorful crabs on route attract most travelers. A large number of crabs swarming across the road look spectacular. After a walk of 30 minutes, you witness the little glimmer with the exquisite view of a shimmering waterfall in the valley.

Trek continues towards the left with a gradual walk. It can be tough and challenging for some of the new trekkers. It has a very thick forest till summit point, one should have great endurance level to reach the top with challenging ascend. The chances of getting lost are more in this thick forest, the only thing is you should look for some sort of arrow marking. Now the trekkers have left behind the arrow mark and piled rock to indicate the direction for other trekkers. With this arrow marked you need not worry about the directions. Up until the top trek becomes a little gradual with lots of rocks. After a walk of 2 hours in the forest, you come across the diversion, left towards the Badlapur route and right goes to the summit point of Chanderi fort. Another 20 min trek and you reach the Khind. There is a small cave with the statue of Lord Shiva . You can find the Chanderi fort on the left side of this cave. Summit was yet to come because the final 30 min climb was very dangerous and risky too. If you are a regular trekker with some basic idea about rock climbing, only take the risk to reach the summit point. One person at a time is the thumb rule to climb the final patch of the mountain. If one is having a phobia of height then better to avoid the final climb.

There was a rescue operation once for few trekkers who had stuck at the final patch. They all climbed the summit, but couldn’t descend as the trail was not visible due to dense fog. The climb becomes very dangerous in monsoon when the loose rock starts falling and a route becomes more slippery. A human trail parallel to caves goes to the top of the fort.

After the long struggle of 3 hours, you reach the summit point of Chanderi fort. The astonishing view from the top will wander the travelers. It is said that the best of view comes after the hardest climb. Chanderi fort provides a breathtaking view of surrounding forts like Prabalgad , Kalavantin , Irshalgad , Peb fort , and Matheran mountain range. This trek is something where new trekkers should avoid at least the final patch. On top one can get engaged with the statue of Shivaji Maharaj (the great Maratha) surrounded with the Swarajya flag. The space is not much at the summit point so one has to take care.

CHANDERI FORT PANVEL

Ideal Time to Visit Chanderi Fort

Being located in the range of Sahyadri Mountain this trek is not seasonal like other places. You can find many trekkers trekking in the monsoon time. Chanderi being risky fort it is better to avoid it in the monsoon due to slippery patch.

Post monsoon from September to February is the ideal time to visit the fort. This is the time when one can witness the greenery and blossom of flowers. The climate here is very chilled at this time. One can also think of camping at the base village or at the fort where the caves are located.

Summer from March to May is a bit hot with humidity on the hiring side. You will hardly see any trekkers trekking in summer. If you are trekking in the summertime, then it is advisable to start the trek early in the morning to return to base before the sun becomes extra hot.

Things to Carry for Chanderi Fort Trekking

- Wear a proper pair of shoes that can give a good grip on a wet and dry surface. You need to walk for almost 6 to 7 hours in a single day.

- Do not wear heavy clothes while trekking to the fort; it may make you uncomfortable to climb.

- A cap with sun lotion if your skin is a bit sensitive to the sun.

-Do carry the lightweight rain jacket over the umbrella for your own comfort while climbing.

-If you are climbing from the Panvel route then you may take a guide from the base village.

What to Know Before You Reach Chanderi Fort

-It’s a thumb rule to search and take extra information about the place before you visit.

- The trail from Vangani is very easy to compare to Panvel, but it is so long and takes close to 4 hours to reach the summit of the fort.

- Route from Tamsai village, Panvel may confuse you as it passes through the dense forest. Follow marking or you can ask for a guide at base village.

- There is some space in the caves where people stay at the night; you can put your tent inside the caves.

- Do not try the final patch of a trek if you are not experienced in rock climbing, because there have been cases where people have lost their lives at the final climb.

- There is drinking water available for emergencies in small ponds close to the caves before the final climb.
