Rome has been a popular topic in song and verse for centuries, but the ripest period, barring the Romantic poetry and prose of the 19th century, has been from the 1950s to today, sweeping across genres and styles with one thing in common… the timelessness of the Eternal City. 1) Frank Sinatra “Three Coins in the Fountain” In 1954  – Ol’ Blue Eyes made the world swoon when he released this No. 1 Billboard Pop Chart single for the romantic film of the same name. Half a century later, even the least superstitious of travelers continue to toss coins into the Trevi!

2) Dean Martin “On an Evening in Roma (Sott’ er Celo di Roma)”  – This 1959 love song is so very “Roman”. Switching between English and Italian, Martin describes the romance that he longs for as he paints a beautiful picture of the Eternal City.

3) Peggy Lee “Autumn in Rome”  – Lee’s 1950’s jazz ballad oozes with romance, complete with a strong orchestra and the sounds of birds chirping throughout. The American singer/actress masterfully expresses a heartbroken vocal melody as she reminisces about falling in love in la bella cittá, Roma!

4) Lou Monte “Roman Guitar”  – A tasteful Italian-English 1956 lament to love lost in Rome. Classical guitar picking, Latin rhythms, and an orchestra complete this light and danceable song!

5) Elvis Presley “Heart of Rome”  – In the 1971 orchestrated single, Elvis opens his heart up about being left by his lover in Rome. What’s a man to do? According to “The King”, he should pray and throw a coin in every fountain. Sounds like a plan!

7) Sam Cooke “Rome Wasn’t Built in a Day”  – In 1964, Sam Cooke turned an age-old-phrase into a classic soul jam! This one’s not even about Rome, rather the idiom is used as a metaphor to convince his “honey” to stay, suggesting that her love for him may just take some time to grow.

8) Toto “Spanish Steps of Rome”  – While Toto is most well known for their “Africa” anthem (which will probably be stuck in your head after simply reading about it), this corny 1990s synth rock tune is about a mysterious woman in the Eternal City. Intrigued? Give it a listen!

9) Bob Dylan “Early Roman Kings”  – As odd as it may seem, the most recent if our favorite Rome songs was released by Bob Dylan in 2012. Perhaps it was an homage to the modern-day Romans, who, as a whole, are totally obsessed with Dylan! The singer songwriter uses classic blues riffs in this song that makes the early Roman kings sound like rock stars.

10) Morcheeba “Rome (Wasn’t Built in a Day)”  – Morcheeba waited a few decades before working Sam Cooke’s romantic metaphor into a 21st century pop song. It worked out well for them, taking the 34th spot on the UK charts for the year 2000, making it their biggest hit ever in their home country!

11) Phoenix “Rome”  – In 2009 electronic pop group Phoenix released their album “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix” which featured this energetic track. It’s fresh, modern and reminiscent of young love in Rome, with lyrics about smoking cigarettes near the colosseum and admiring Roman sunsets, without being too literal or overdone.

Most people don’t even know how or why they know this tune – it just kind of creeps into your conscience (and no one’s complaining about it). It’s true that this song focuses a bit more on Southern Italy, but we love it anyway!

Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi “Rome”  – This 2011 release is an alternative soundtrack to your Roman state of mind. With Danger Mouse (whose producing ventures include El Camino by The Black Keys) and urban Morricone-esque arrangements by contemporary Italian composer Daniele Luppi, featuring talents such as Jack White (The White Stripes) and Norah Jones, this is a beautiful ode to the Eternal City in all its promises and failings.

1. On an Evening in Roma — Dean Martin

Ask anyone for the first song that comes to mind when they think of Rome, and there’s a good chance they’ll say On An Evening In Roma . This was undoubtedly one of Dean Martin ’s most famous tracks and has become a staple of films that take place in the Eternal City.

When it was released in 1959, it was an instant hit, spending 13 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. It’s not hard to see why—the song perfectly encapsulates the feeling of a warm summer evening in Rome with the person that you love. Martin’s silken voice makes the city sound like the most exciting place in the world. 

2. Arrivederci Roma — Nat King Cole

Nat King Cole wasn’t the creator of this popular song. It was first composed in 1955 and featured in the movie Seven Hills Of Rome , where it was sung by Mario Lanza. However, the track received many covers over the years, notably by Dean Martin and Cole.

Rome is popularly known as a city where tourists can experience a brief romance; however, this song is written from the other side—from the perspective of a Roman man thinking back on the romances he has had with tourists who come to visit his city. 

3. Three Coins in The Fountain — Frank Sinatra

One of the most famous landmarks in Rome is the Trevi Fountain , which is visited by more than a thousand people every day. The tradition is to throw a coin over your shoulder into the fountain and make a wish as you do.

Frank Sinatra’s track was recorded for the 1954 film of the same name, which follows three tourists as they explore Rome. It won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and has been covered countless times ever since—though some people say that no one can live up to the original.

Elvis Presley’s 1971 song Heart Of Rome is a far cry from the massive rock and roll hits of his early career , but nevertheless remains a classic of his final years. The mournful ballad is written from the perspective of a man whose lover has left him behind in Rome.

Though he doesn’t know if he’ll ever see her again, he plans to spend his days saying prayers, throwing coins in fountains, and wandering the city streets in the hopes of finding her. 

5. Spanish Steps of Rome — Toto

The band Toto is widely known for their 1982 hit Africa , they also recorded a song that’s all about the Eternal City. Spanish Steps Of Rome was featured on their 1999 album Mindfields. It tells the story of two people meeting and falling in love on the Piazza di Spagna, one of Rome’s most iconic staircases.

The track goes on to describe the lovers hunting for one another throughout the city, mentioning several well-known landmarks along the way. These include the catacombs , the Trevi fountain, and the statues of the wolf nursing Romulus and Remus. 

6. Rome Wasn’t Built in a Day — Morcheeba

We’ve all heard the phrase “Rome wasn’t built in a day,” which is generally used to mean that good work is done one small step at a time. English band Morcheeba used the saying to describe two lovers building their relationship.

They want to rush ahead and get to the intense declarations of love, but they know that to build something that lasts, they need to take it slow. If the success of the Roman Empire was any indication, the saying holds true. 

7. Fall of Rome — Shawn Colvin

The Roman Empire lasted more than 1,000 years before falling in 476 CE. In her 2012 song Fall Of Rome , Shawn Colvin describes the ending of an era. It’s not entirely clear if she means to describe the actual fall of the empire, but it seems to be metaphorical ; she also makes references to other catastrophic endings, including the sinking of the Titanic and the destruction of Pompeii . Whatever has happened, it’s clear there is no coming back from it. Rome will never rise again. 

8. Autumn in Rome — Peggy Lee

The song Autumn In Rome was written for the 1953 film Stazione Termini, or Indiscretions Of An American Wife , which follows the story of a month-long affair between an Italian man and a married American tourist.

But it is probably best remembered for its cover by Peggy Lee. The track describes a long-ago romance in Rome, with the narrator describing how scenes around the city are fixed in their mind. It has been covered many times since its original release and is now better known than the film itself.

9. Rome — Phoenix

French band Phoenix released Rome in 2009 , proving that songs about having a fling on vacation in Rome have no expiration date. The track was inspired by the French people’s love of Rome and how it is seen as a destination of ultimate romance and adventure.

It also describes the ways that people tend to build up the prospect of relationships in their heads, while reality can’t possibly hold up. This can lead to these relationships crumbling—much like the Roman ruins themselves.

10. Early Roman Kings — Bob Dylan

Early Roman Kings is one of Bob Dylan’s more recent works, appearing on his 2012 album Tempest. The song is a criticism of the evil men in power throughout different eras of history, making nods to the kings of Rome as well as modern rulers.

Other connections are made in the reference to the Roman Kings, a street gang active in New York in the 1960s. In typical Dylan fashion, the track’s lyrics are as complex as they are clever, weaving the common theme from ancient Rome to the modern day. 

11. The Roman Road — Super Furry Animals

There are plenty of ways to interpret The Roman Road by Super Furry Animals. The song leans unashamedly into its own bizarre lyrics, with references to fighting German aircraft with a kite and talking to goats about the shape of the universe.

However, the overarching theme of the track seems to be the interconnectedness of the world, as referenced in the saying “All roads lead to Rome.” The lyrics describe the narrator’s home as a “pitstop” on the way to Rome, where there is “scheming and a-dreaming there is reason to be living.” 

12. Fontana di Trevi — Achille Togliani

Achille Togliani ’s dreamy song isn’t well-known in the English-speaking world. The track is a sweet ode to the Trevi fountain and all the promises that it holds. He describes it as a promise for those who believe in love and dream of having someone to call their own.

Call it sentimental, but if there is one thing Italians know how to do without apology, it’s sentiment. And it’s a beautiful thing. Even the most stoic will have a hard time resisting his stunning performance as he describes his hopeful search for the love of his life. 

13. Roman Guitar — Lou Monte

Lou Monte wasn’t the first person to sing Roman Guitar . In fact, the earliest version happened more than 20 years before his time. It was originally an Italian song, Chitarra Romana , recorded by Carlo Buti in 1935 . In 1956, Monte’s English adaptation became a classic.

The singer’s version alternates English and Italian verses in this beautiful love track. Most of us would like to imagine a lover serenading us with a guitar under the Roman stars, a picture the song paints to perfection. Romeo And Juliet doesn’t take place in Rome, but if it did it might sound like this.

14. When in Rome — Tony Bennett And Bill Evans

When In Rome was first recorded in 1964 by Peggy Lee —who seemed to enjoy singing about Rome. Eleven years later, Tony Bennett and Bill Evans covered the song, which is styled as a kind of breakup track .

Well, not exactly. The narrator says he’s off to Rome and that his lover shouldn’t begrudge him a vacation fling with another woman. Why? Because he’s just trying to be respectful of the local culture, which apparently involves romance with a stranger. No word on whether that excuse was successful for the narrator.

15. Knowledge is Power — The Ethiopians

Many famous tracks about Rome are love songs, but this track by The Ethiopians is a bit different. It describes how funny it is to live in Rome alongside the pope —inarguably one of the most important figures in the world.

Most of us can’t exactly relate to that experience, but we have to admit that it would probably be pretty strange. It just goes to show that in a city like Rome, there are many aspects to consider.

Rome is not only one of the most visited cities in the world, but also one of the cities with most mentions in poems and songs. Because music and travel are two of my biggest passions, I thought I would combine them to create the perfect playlist for visiting the Eternal City.

First of all, if you’re thinking about visiting Rome, take a moment to check out 10 of the best things to do and see in Rome . You need to get a little familiar with the city beforehand, because in addition to the list of songs, there are also recommendations on where to listen to each one of them. Now, let’s get into it!

Need a push to start your trip to Rome? This song will basically command you. Listen to its wise words.

2. Toto – Spanish Steps

And then it occurred to me Suddenly I was standing there alone On the Spanish Steps of Rome

A song about an unfulfilled love that started on the Spanish Steps of Rome, it’s a good idea to go at the exact spot and imagine the story pictured by the lyrics.

3. Dean Martin – On An Evening In Roma (Sott’er Celo De Roma)

Sung half in Italian, half in English, this song will get you in a romantic mood in seconds. It doesn’t matter in which season you visit Rome, this song will take you down the memory lane every time you’ll hear it. Personally, it will always remind me of the long walks in Villa Borghese, one of Rome’s most beautiful parks. If you want to hear this song brought to life in a feminine voice, look for the version sung by Peggy Lee.

5. Morcheeba – Rome Wasn’t Built In A Day

One fine day, we’ll fly away, Don’t you know that Rome wasn’t built in a day

Ok, this is not exactly a song about Rome, but rather a song with a reference of Rome. Nevertheless, I love this band and also love the happy vibe of this tune. The title is a good reminder that all good things take time and effort, so be patient when working for your dreams, because not even Rome was built in a day.

6. Frank Sinatra – Three Coins In The Fountain

Three hearts in the fountain Each heart longing for its home There they lie in the fountain Somewhere in the heart of Rome

This is a timeless song about the tradition to toss coins in the fountain to be granted wishes. It doesn’t specifically mention Fontana di Trevi, but it’s obvious. Listening to this song while standing in front of the fountain will make you wonder what are the stories of the people around you and what are they secretly hoping for in exchange for a coin. Also, there is a movie with the same name, go check it out!

7. Elvis Presley – Heart of Rome

Hold me very close before you leave me La la la la la, somewhere in the heart of Rome

Rome is once again the setting for another love story to unfurl. It’s about a lover that is sad about his sweetheart leaving the city. Because the song is called “Heart of Rome”, I’d say the perfect place to listen to this song would be the area around the Colosseum and Roman Forum. If that’s not the heart of Rome, I don’t know what is.

8. Super Furry Animals – Roman Road

The Roman road It’s a line to the past and a road to Rome

This song is about a Roman road, without giving further details. But I think I’m not the only one who automatically thinks about the ancient Appian Way, which survived the test of time and can still be seen in our days.

9. Shawn Colvin – Fall Of Rome

Maybe a message is coming to you In the middle of nowhere from out of the blue Then cross the dark distance and lay down your guns For Rome it has fallen And morning has begun

The Rome reference in this song is just a metaphor for those hard times in life, but you can play the song while you’re still at the Roman Forum. Although that place has seen the fall of Rome, it’s still standing tall, reminding us of the glorious place it once was. Therefore, a fall doesn’t have to mean an end.

10. Mario Lanza – The Seven Hills Of Rome

The world is old but love is new And when in Rome your heart will tell you what to do

According to the legend, Rome was founded on seven hills: Aventin Hill, Caelian Hill, Palatine Hill, Capitoline Hill, Esquiline Hill, Viminal Hill and Quirinal Hill. You can play this song on any or all of them. As the lyrics say, when in Rome your heart will tell you what to do.

11. Synaulia – La Musica Dell’Antica Roma (Ancient Roman Music)

Aaaaaa (Because probably Romans didn’t fancy songs with lyrics)

A dark, mysterious song, that has the power to transform the surrounding reality and take you back in time, 2000 years ago. The song recreates what ancient Romans actually listened to. Give it a listen inside the Pantheon or Sant’Angelo Castle, both locations have an appealing mystic vibe.

12. Petula Clark – Romance in Rome

Romance in Rome, Eternal City of joy

A sweet, timeless song about the Eternal City. As you can see, Rome inspired a lot of love songs and this is another relevant example. Roam the streets aimlessly and you’ll find beauty and joy everywhere you look.

13. The Ethiopians – Knowledge is Power

It is funny to live in Rome and to stay with the Pope

After so many romance songs, let’s try something a little bit different. This reggae tune talks about the joys of living in Rome, where the Pope also lives. You already know what’s the best place to play this song, right? Vatican all the way!

Yeah, baby! Finally, some rock and roll! A song about switching cities, having fun, spending money, loving people and feeling lonely. All in one. Just like it happens in real life.

To get you into the mood, let’s start with international songs. Many artists and bands have indeed composed songs about Rome or taken Rome as a symbol, sometimes of decadence, other times of magnificence; at times of corruption and, certainly, of beauty.

Jerry Garcia – When I paint my masterpiece

The lysergic king Jerry Garcia , leader of the Grateful Dead and prominent character of the late 60s-ealy 70s counter-culture, has been using to cover this wonderful Bob Dylan composition from at least 1972. The song’s topic is not specifically focused on Rome rather than on an artist’s quest for inspiration, but even if sometimes the description of the city fails to escape usual stereotypes, the first three lines are one of the most powerful and accurate depiction of Rome’s decadence:

Oh, the streets of Rome are filled with rubble Ancient footprints are everywhere You can almost think that you’re seein’ double On a cold, dark night on the Spanish Stairs

Peggy Lee – Autumn in Rome

This one is definitely a classic, but it differs from other famous hits of the 50s focused on Rome for its delicate, jazzy musical approach and for its songwriting which brings to life nostalgic pictures of golden skies and gentle Mediterranean breezes in opposition to the cold and grey gait of winter in a northern city.

Tom Waits – In the Colosseum

No one better than Tom Waits could have represented the horrible and beautiful display of humanity that used to liven up a night at the Colosseum . Of course, in this case the Anfiteatro Flavio is a mere symbol that Waits uses to revive a theme which he holds very dear: the pointless, chaotic entropy which we call life.

This Heat – SPQR

Rather than considering the Roman Empire for its magnificence or its cultural influence, post-punk british band This Heat turns it into a dark omen of a dystopian, totalitarian society (for the ones who don’t know it, the acronym  S.P.Q.R. stands for Senatus Populusque Romanus ). Band leader Charles Hayward describes the lyrics as “a cultural view of history and logic and expedience and how we are inside that, too.”

Phoenix – Rome

With their unique mixture of Easy Listening and Electronic, the french band Phoenix were able to give birth to this dance-able hit while still catching one of the party-unfriendly features of Rome: its decadence, opposed to its status of Eternal City .

Italian songs about Rome

Letting alone folk ballads and traditional songs, Italian songs genuinely focused Rome are less than you might think. At least this can be said for the very few Italian songs that are worthy to be remembered and manage to distance themselves from the usual depiction of the city – although Italian stereotypes about Rome differ significantly from foreign ones. Here’s a selection of five Italian songs about Rome that you can also use to learn Italian .

Colle Der Fomento – Il cielo su Roma

Let’s start our journey with a song that we have already played in the last episode of Aperitalia , our webradio dedicated to Italian language students, for the roman Hip-Hop band Colle Der Formento . The sky above Rome quoted in the title is a big starry entity that observes the dramatic multitude of lives and experiences that makes Rome a modern Babylon. The song lyrics are focused on the life in the suburbs and in the most popular neighborhoods of the city, mixing a genuine street attitude with an emphatic and somehow nostalgic songwriting.

Virginiana Miller – L’eternità di Roma

May this beautiful Chitarra romana serve as an example of her outstanding talent.

Claudio Baglioni – Porta Portese

If you don’t know what Porta Portese is, you might want to revisit your schedule for your next Roman holiday to visit this characteristic open air market, which is one of the few traditional flea markets that resisted the assault of big shopping mall and standardised shopping. Roman songwriter Claudio Baglioni has dedicated a lovely ballad to this tradition which every Sunday brings back in time a whole area of the city.

Corrado Guzzanti – Grande Raccordo Anulare

Speaking of tradition, we couldn’t leave out the one place which all Romans have in common: the Grande Raccordo Anulare ( GRA ), the huge circular highway that embraces the whole city and is doomed by an eternal flow of traffic. Comedian Corrado Guzzanti, imitating the famous songwriter Antonello Venditti , offers a picturesque and funny depiction of this sort of urban limbo. Enjoy! 🙂

With a violin, a cimbalom, and some brass, Roma musicians play songs of love and loss. Here’s an insider’s guide to the constantly evolving cultural tradition. Make sure to read the lovely feature article that accompanies this primer,   Roma Rhapsody: A Musical Journey Into the Heart of Romania .

> Essential Listening:

• Fanfare Ciocărlia ’s album Live captures the intensity of the group’s live concert   performances.
• Masters of Roma instruments, Taraf de Haïdouks plays classical music by famed composers such as Béla Bartók and Aram Khachaturian on the album Maškaradǎ .
• The compilation album Transylvanian and Moldavian Fiddlers includes more than 20 tunes from the   Szászcsávás Band   and other musicians from Hungarian-speaking parts of Romania.
• On the album Ghetto Blasters , Bucharest-based ensemble Mahala Raï Banda mixes traditional Roma music with 21st-century urban energy and party-starting playfulness.

Isabel Fonseca’s   Bury Me Standing   (1995) is a captivating history of the Roma and their plight in eastern Europe. The title comes from a Roma adage: “Bury me standing; I’ve been on my knees all my life.”

> Experience Roma Music in Person:

Several organizations lead Roma music trips to Romania. Among the best is German company Transylvania Active and Cultural Travel , which runs tours in English and works in cooperation with the Asphalt Tango music label . Travelers stay some nights with Roma families.

> Photo Tip: Don’t be shy.

While attending a Gypsy music concert, you will probably get very close to the performers, so don’t forget to bring your wide lens, says photographer Bogdan Croitoru .

The performers may even draw you into the dance circle, tickling you with the bow of a violin. These are the best moments for taking pictures, face to face, not hiding but laughing and shooting pictures.

While unfamiliar to many of the Anglo members in the audience at the awards, those who have followed Cuarón’s career know that the song wasn’t just some random Spotify stream. The Mexican director, like Stanley Kubrick or Martin Scorcese before him, has long synched tunes in his films to reflect not only the action and era in which the plot is set, but also to serve as metaphors for his characters and the world they inhabit.

“Alone and heartbroken you have left me,” Dan sang as Cuarón made his way to the stage, much like the state of despair for Roma ’s two female leads, the middle-class Sofi (Marina de Tavira) and her indigenous housekeeper, Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio).

American film critics have rightfully praised Roma for its cinematography, direction, actors, and more. But those scribes — most likely because they don’t speak Spanish or are familiar with the songs on Roma — have largely missed out on how Cuarón has brilliantly soundtracked the Mexico of the 1970s in his film.

Roma doesn’t have a music score, and Cuarón didn’t need it. Lynn Fainchtein, (the film’s music supervisor) captured the songs and sounds of 1970s Mexico City, from the sound of planes in the sky, to the gushing sounds of water when Cleo is cleaning or washing, to the afilador de cuchillos on his bike announcing with his whistle that he’s outside to sharpen your knives.

But it’s the song selection that is especially captivating. The socioeconomic clash of the time and personal turmoil plays out in the music each character listens to while going on about their day. For many who watched the film, and either lived in Mexico during this era, or listened to these songs while growing up, the movie serves as a time machine, a vivid reminder of the Mexico they left behind, or a recollection of a time spent with a loved one.

The domestic drama of the film plays out in the shadow of El Halconzo, a student massacre that took place on June 10, 1971 at the hands of a trained paramilitary group comprised of young men who came from Mexico City’s poorer neighborhoods. Early on during the film, we see Cleo’s love of popular music. She picks up dirty laundry while she carries a handheld radio and sings along with “Te He Prometido,” a song that talks about being heartbroken and scorned by the one you loved and trusted.

The sing-along gets interrupted when Cleo’s fellow domestic worker lets her know that Cleo’s love interest (Jorge Antonio Guerrero) is on the phone. The song lyrics foreshadow his actions towards Cleo, and how this will influence her state of mind.

Later, we see Cleo washing clothes by hand in the lavadero. While scrubbing the soapy clothing, she sings along to Juan Gabriel’s “No Tengo Dinero.” Much like Cleo being a domestic worker who deeply cares about the family she works for with little in terms of financial reward, Juan Gabriel’s masterpiece sings about a poor boy who has has no money to give to his amor, just love.

Roma ’s women characters get the tender, heartsick ballads and also makes the powerful point that mujeres get oppressed regardless of class. In one scene, Sofi purposefully grinds her husband’s Ford Galaxie against the walls of a garage as Lupita D’Alessio “Mi Corazon es un Gitano,” which mourns a lost love, much like Sofi is mourning her crumbling marriage. As Sofi stumbles her way to the door where Cleo is waiting for her, she says to Cleo: “We are alone. No matter what they tell you, we women are always alone.”

In another scene, Cleo sings a Mixtec lullaby called “Cilhu” while she puts one of Sofi’s kids to bed. It showed her motherly instinct and genuine love for Sofi’s children. This tender care is, after all, what Cuarón wanted to portray, as the reflection of his own upbringings and gentle care of his real-life nanny, Liboria “Libo” Rodríguez.

Roma’s men, meanwhile, get rough songs or those that mock their pretensions.

When we meet Dr. Antonio (Fernando Grediaga), Sofi’s husband, he maneuvers his way-too-big Ford Galaxie into the family’s tight garage as he listens to Berlioz’s Romantic soother “Symphonie Fantastique.” Cleo’s love interest, on the other hand, gets the fast-paced, bluesy “Ciudad Perdida” by Mexican rock band, La Revolución de Emiliano Zapata, as she drives to find him, as the city gets ready to explode in chaos. This isn’t the first time that Cuarón showcases a song by La Revolución de Emiliano Zapata: His 2001 film, Y Tu Mamá También , also features a song by the band, “Nasty Sex.”

While the men in the film were cold and heartless, Sofi and Cleo always showed love and affection no matter the circumstances they were facing. This connection of heartbreak and perseverance manifests itself in a banda de guerra that parades outside Sofi’s home twice: when Dr. Antonio abandons the family, and when Sofi, Cleo, and the kids return from their beach trip to Tuxpan and Sofi tells the family that Antonio will not be coming back.

Love begins and ends, Cuarón hints, but life marches on.

Planning Your Trip

Things to know before you go:

• Best Time to Visit : Since Rome has a Mediterranean climate, there's really no bad time to visit . If you want to avoid the crowds and the heat of summer, we recommend coming to Rome in the late spring or early autumn when the weather is mild and lines tend to be shorter. For average daily temperatures and rainfall, month by month, see our article.
• Language: Italian is the official language   , but you'll find that many people speak some English, especially those who work in the tourist industry. That said, it's always a good idea to bring along a pocket-sized phrasebook or download one of the many free language translation apps on your smartphone, just in case.
• Currency: As a member of the European Union   , Italy uses the Euro (€). Prices include tax and credit cards are widely accepted in restaurants, hotels, and shops. But when purchasing small items like a cup of coffee, a slice of pizza, or a glass of wine, plan on paying cash.
• Getting Around: Although Rome is a big metropolis, the historic center, or centro storico , is fairly compact, making it a highly walkable city. Public transport in Rome is run by ATAC , which operates the buses and trams linking riders to most areas in the city. The Metro subway system is affordable and quick.
• Travel Tip: You might find shorter lines if you visit the most popular attractions in the early afternoon when most people are at lunch.

Getting Around

Rome has an extensive public transportation system that consists of the Metro (subway), buses, trams, and three suburban railway lines (FS). Convenient and relatively inexpensive, the network connects to Rome's most popular tourist attractions but can be sometimes unreliable and overcrowded, especially during the summer months.

Things To Do

With so much to do and see in Rome, we recommend you start by hitting the major tourist attractions first—especially if this is your first visit. Regardless, do make sure to leave time in your schedule for people watching on an intimate piazza or strolling down Rome's many charming streets and cobbled alleyways.

Here are just some of Rome's top attractions:

• The Colosseum or Colosseo is the largest monument from Imperial Rome   still in existence today. The enormous amphitheater once housed fierce gladiator contests and wild animal fights. It's best approached from Via dei Fori Imperiali to get the full effect of its grandeur. Entrance lines can be long, so check out our tips for buying Colosseum tickets and avoid waiting .
• The Pantheon , one of the world's best-preserved ancient buildings, this masterpiece of Roman architecture began as a pagan temple before becoming a church in the 7th century AD. Located on Piazza della Rotonda, the Pantheon has a cylinder-shaped, hemispherical dome featuring a round hole in the top, the oculus, that allows natural light to stream in, as well as raindrops. Admission is free.
• Vatican City, the home of Saint Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museums, is the world's smallest city-state. Geographically located within Rome, but not actually part of it, St. Peter's is the largest church in the world and houses important works by Michelangelo and Bernini. The Vatican Museums ( Musei Vaticani ) is a massive complex that contains an impressive art collection spanning 3,000 years—from Classical to modern eras. It's here that you can see the Sistine Chapel featuring Michelangelo's renowned frescoed ceiling.

What to Eat and Drink

Traditional Roman cuisine is based on inexpensive cuts of meat like offal and simple pasta recipes such as cacio e pepe (pecorino cheese and black pepper) and spaghetti carbonara (egg, cheese, and pork cheek). Other Roman favorites include deep fried artichokes ( carciofi alla giudia ), supplì (stuffed balls of rice with tomato sauce), and thin, crisp-crusted pizza.

Frascati is a white wine blend made in an area just south of the city. Artisanal and craft beer has become quite popular recently with pubs cropping up all over the city. In speakeasies and chic hipster bars, cocktails are flowing after hours.

Where to Stay

With so many diverse and interesting neighborhoods in Rome, it's hard to choose where to stay. For easy access to the airport and public transportation, staying in a cozy B&B or friendly hostel near Termini Station makes a lot of sense. If you want to be where the action is, there are a myriad of lodging options in Trastevere , Monti, and the centralissimo (very central) area, though these quarters can be rather noisy at night. If romance is what you're after, consider staying at a historic luxury hotel along the famed Via Veneto or near the Spanish Steps, but expect to pay a premium for such stellar locations. If you're on a budget, self-catering Airbnbs and inexpensive hotels are available all over the city, offering a great solution.

Getting There

There are two airports serving the Rome metropolitan area: Fiumicino (also known as Leonardo da Vinci) is the main international airport and Ciampino is a smaller, regional one. The best way to get into the city from the Fiumicino is by train to the main railway station closest to the historic center, Stazione Termini . You can also take airport buses to either Termini or Tiburtina station. We recommend you avoid driving in Rome if at all possible.

Culture and Customs

If you want to "do as the Romans do," then follow the bit of advice below.

• You must have your ticket before boarding any public transportation—buy them at station kiosks, newsstands ( edicole ), and tabacchi (tobacco shops). At boarding, be sure to stamp your ticket to validate them or you could get hit with a steep fine.
• You can't hail a cab on the streets of Rome, but can pick up one at the many official taxi stands scattered throughout the city.
• In restaurants, remember that tipping isn't obligatory, but is much appreciated. The rule of thumb is to leave €1 for each diner in your group or round up the check a few euros. If you get exceptional service, feel free to leave up to, but no more than 10% of the total bill.
• When perusing Rome's many boutiques and fashionable shops know that handling items is frowned upon, therefore it's best to ask the shopkeeper for assistance.
• Rome is a relatively safe big city, yet it does have its share of petty crime. Be aware of pickpockets, especially at train stations, on the Metro, and in crowded tourist areas.
