Stopped Working

I've been using this specific adblock for years and although it works on some of the other machines I own it has stopped working as intended recently. Every now and then an ad would slip by which a quick refresh would fix but now ads still pop up but are blacked out with audio still coming from the ads. I don't think this recent behaviour is deserving of anything less than 3 stars but imo is no longer that 5 star product I used to love.

Be prepared to be locked down for life

Adblock is just absolutely insane. It takes the liberty of putting itself front and center when you're in the middle of something to require some sort of action. "Hey look at me I'm adblock, I'm on your computer! I need to be updated every day!" It's as if it needs me to be reminded that it's installed on my computer EVERY DAY by stopping everything I'm doing and putting itself on a new tab for me to look at or pop up as an app for some sort of notification. And what's worse is when you try to delete it, it WON'T Delete. It'll tell you something like "The app can't be installed because it's still being used." And even though i turn off the eextension, it still says that and will refuse to be installed. This app is awful, please do yourself a favor and do NOT install this.

To prevent the AdBlock window from appearing, please go to the Settings tab and toggle the option "Launch at login" off. Note: you don't need to keep the app open to block ads in Safari. Good - but needs status indicator

EDIT: Developer indicated that Apple does not allow the AdBlock icon to change color when Active vs Inactive. That's frustrating but I'm grateful for the Developer's feedback. FYI Apple - a bit more Developer leniency would be helpful in cases like these to enhance the user experience. ORIGINAL REVIEW: Works well for me - but why doesn't the icon gray out when I pause ad blocking? If I forget to turn it back on, the icon just remains blue and I forget that it's still paused. Please fix.

Hi, The blue icon is not something we can change -- Apple does not provide the functionality to gray out the icon if a app is active on a particular page. Because AdBlock is allowing ads, according to Apple, that means it's active. We wish we could change the behavior but we can't! Vinegar: Block YouTube ads with native video playback on iPhone, iPad and Mac

Effectively, what Vinegar does is really simple. It replaces the YouTube video player with the built-in iOS (or macOS) video player. That gives you all kinds of benefits.

First of all, you won’t see any ads. Nothing before the video, nothing interrupting the video, nothing in the sidebar. Need I say more? With Vinegar, you always jump straight into the YouTube content you want to watch.

Second, you get a bunch of features back that YouTube takes away from you. You can play a video picture-in-picture to keep watching while you send a text, scroll through social media or play a game. Or, you can play audio in the background without the video: Just start a video, go back to the Home Screen and hit the play button from Control Center.

Finally, if you care about such things, Vinegar uses Apple’s own video player instead of the YouTube interface. It’s a matter of personal preference, but I’m biased toward Apple’s design. I find the YouTube player cluttered and messy.

What’s the catch? Not much.

Keep in mind that, since Vinegar is a Safari extension, this only works on the youtube.com website, not the YouTube app. For best results, you should actually uninstall the YouTube app to prevent links from opening in it instead of Safari. That’s the only major downside to using Vinegar.

On a more minor note, some YouTube-specific features don’t work — information cards that show up in the middle of a video and endscreen buttons. But that’s a small price to pay in exchange for ad-free watching, in my opinion.

How to block YouTube ads on MacOS

YouTube is known for notoriously persistent ads. From one short ad at the beginning of the video to sometimes two ads now, and one in the middle and one at the end, surely. If one does not click Skip, it would keep going for minutes. As MacOS users often cannot use certain software (only Windows versions), we’d like to highlight ways to block YouTube ads on a Mac. These include browser extensions (Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Opera) and desktop applications. We focus on 2 factors mainly: effectiveness and impact on page load speed.

Block YouTube ads in Opera

Option 1: Built-in adblock function. This is the easiest and fastest option in Opera . It does not require to find and install anything, and it’s not hidden somewhere in the settings. The moment you enter Opera browser, it suggests to enable ad blocking option.

For options, click the blue icon on the right. If it’s not there, click the Easy Setup icon and scroll down – find a slider under the Privacy & Security section. Hit it and the adblock icon will appear. But most of all, we have to check how does it block YouTube ads. Half an hour of listening to the latest hits goes by and not a single video ad or picture-in-picture ad has appeared. Test passed.

Opera website claims that the adblock is able to increase page speed up to 90%. During our use, we’ve registered a 50% increase, which is still a great result.

Option 2: Opera add-ons. AdBlocker for Youtube is one of those Opera extensions specifically tailored for YouTube. It does its job well, though one or two video ads still slipped, an in-picture banner surfaced as an empty frame. No page banners were seen. Minimal interface, just two sliders, a real gift for those who like to keep it simple. Regarding page load speed, in our case YouTube videos have been opening from 21% to 36% quicker without ads (29% on average).

Stop YouTube ads in Chrome

AdBlock is among the most popular YouTube ad blocker extensions. It has a plain window with basic functions like disabling ad blocking on a current page. In settings it has more functions, including customizing filter lists, whitelisting, statistics, as well as contacting the support team.

One of the features is particularly useful for active YouTube viewers. In the General tab you can tick Allow whitelisting of specific channels. This way you can support favorite content producers (as they get money from advertisers) while still blocking ads elsewhere.

AdBlock is another free extension, although donations are welcome. There is also a Premium license, however its benefits are insignificant. Our little YouTube ads test: pass. Yet AdBlock appears to be slowing the pages instead of speeding up: +30% on average. In some cases videos were loading in 6-8 seconds. Also, we’ve noticed that this Chrome extension has been consuming 350-400Mb of RAM.

To make it three and show enough variety, there’s also uBlock extension . In our experience, it was performing better than AdBlock. A few video ads have appeared for half a second, and were gone just before sound started. In some cases, a blocked banner caused some mess in the page layout. Picture-in-picture banners were blocked successfully.

All in all, we consider a test passed, with minor flaws. Regarding the load speed, uBlock has not been explicit. At times videos loaded 5% faster, other times it was 30% slower, and often it was the same. Generally, it took 2 to 3 seconds to start videos.

Firefox addons

Nothing different with Mozilla Firefox browser and tools to block YouTube ads in it. Let’s drop two examples. AdBlocker for YouTube by German vendor shows positive results. It does not have any icon in the window, so to disable it, you need to go to Menu-Tools-Add-ons and find it. It has no option to whitelist YouTube channels.

One might find it disturbing that this add-on asks for permission to access user data on all websites and to all browser tabs. Why does an app designed to block YouTube ads only, require all that data? No idea and no explanation from the vendor. Yet it works well, blocks advertisement and causes clips to load ~30% faster.

Another example with a cute design is Ghostery . When you click on Ghostery icon you will see the amount of ads and trackers blocked and page load time (most ad blockers do not display such info). You can also mark a current website as Trusted or Restricted to manage tracking. Even though Ghostery is primarily an anti-tracking tool, it hides ads just as well, not a single ad has  appeared while testing. Load speed impact is minor, only getting around 5%.

Safari extensions blocking ads

Blocking ads on a Mac primarily involves the Safari browser. There’s no shortage of tools for it either. Ad And Stuff Blocker is one, and it looks ascetic: just it on the extension tab of Safari, no icon in the browser. And 2 functions only: enable/disable and whitelist. In terms of performance, it halts  in-picture banners, but lets some side banners through. It blocks video ads yet in some cases it may result in a black screen instead of video. Also, the layout of the Up Next column may get affected, which is a minor flaw.

AdGuard for Safari is one of the most space-occupying YouTube ad blockers. Apart from being visible in the launchpad, in the dock, and in the browser, it also has 7 separate extensions in Safari Extensions manager page. A small window in the browser allows you to enable/disable AdGuard on a current page, report a page, or block an element. AdGuard performs great, we’ve detected no flaws during use. It has no option of whitelisting a particular YouTube channel, though advanced users may do this in the Rules.

Multi-browser ad blockers

If you are switching between different browsers, it might be inconvenient to use different ad blockers.  In this case, one might want to consider a regular desktop application that will cover all the browsers and even programs containing ads. These apps are naturally more expensive. We have tested two multi-browser ad blockers on four browsers that are popular among Mac users: Safari, Chrome, Firefox, and Opera.

AdGuard supports Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, Yandex browsers. Previously, we’ve tried AdGuard for Safari. The AdGuard app that you install on a Mac, is working just as well. However, Chrome may not block all the ads without the extension. It is not free, but has a 14-days trial.

Ghostery Midnight works in Cliqz, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Yandex, Safari, Edge, and Internet Explorer. It also contains such extra functions as VPN and anti-tracker. It is installed as a separate app and also has an extension for each browser. It works for YouTube ads greatly, it does not affect page load time much (not more than -5%). All in all, via a 7-days trial you can decide if it is worth it. Read more in Ghostery review .

As you see, there’s no problem in finding suitable tools for MacOS when you want to block YouTube ads while surfing the web. Of all the examples of extensions and programs, we’ve made a brief summary table with key findings.

We’ve also tried out more ad blockers and found several that do not block ads on YouTube properly, and therefore we do not recommend it:

• Firefox : Clean YouTube.
• Chrome : AdBlock Plus, Enhancer for YouTube.
• Safari : AdBlock, Magic Lasso, uBlock.

Some extensions from the same vendor do not perform equally in different browsers. As our tests show, uBlock and AdBlock are good in Chrome, but not Safari. Remember, our list of examples is not exhaustive in any way, there are plenty of other tools.

Q: How can I disable ad blocking on a specific YouTube channel? A: AdBlock extension has this function. To enable it, go to Extensions > AdBlock > General > Allow whitelisting of specific YouTube channels. If you use different ad blocker, you will have to disable ad blocking manually and refresh the page every time you watch videos where you want to see ads.

Q: AdBlock vs AdBlock Plus vs AdBlock Pro A: These are different ad blockers from different developers that use similar names and similar logos. AdBlock seems to be the most original and better performing extension.

Q: Do ad blockers slow down YouTube? A: It depends. In most cases, it does not slow down YouTube and in some cases it even increases the speed of page loading. Try disabling ad blocker and then enabling it again. If the change in page load time is noticeable, consider changing your ad blocker.

Q: Does an adblocker make YouTube load faster? A: Yes, some ad blockers increase the speed of YouTube loading, since they omit downloading ads. Page load time may vary depending on the ad blocker, browser, the amount of tabs open, quality of the video, and other variables.

Q: Is ad blocking safe? A: Ad blocking itself is safe, but some ad blockers may have malware/adware inside or make a profit from users personal data. Make sure to use products from reliable developers or use privacy and malware protection apps to stay safe.

As of 2024, uBlock Origin continues to be maintained and actively developed by founder and lead developer Raymond Hill.

YouTube is one of the most popular destinations on the web. It’s also the source of some of the most annoying ads. From 30-second pre-roll ads to 5 unskippable 6-second ads in a 10-minute video, one study found that YouTube is second only to Facebook when it comes to offering up the most frustrating ads on the Internet.

Fortunately, YouTube seems to be hearing viewers’ complaints about the most egregious ads. It eliminated the much-reviled unskippable 30-second ad format last February (after promising to do so for a year). Many viewers still find the number , placement , and content of YouTube ads unacceptable.

Thanks to AdBlock, however, you can take control of which ads you see and when. Here’s how to block YouTube ads with AdBlock and make it enjoyable again.

How to Block Ads on YouTube

Just kidding! With AdBlock, you don’t have to do anything to start removing YouTube ads. AdBlock blocks all ads on YouTube.com as soon as you install it — pre-roll, mid-roll, even the ads in the “Up next” sidebar.

How to Block YouTube Ads on Mobile Devices

If you change your mind later, open any video in the channel, click the AdBlock button in the browser toolbar, and select Enable AdBlock on this page .

How to Hide Other Annoyances on YouTube

AdBlock doesn’t just block YouTube ads, it can also eliminate several other YouTube annoyances. By subscribing to additional filter lists , you can also hide:

• the comments section under videos
• “Recommended,” “Suggested,” and “Related” videos and channels on your home page, subscriptions page, feed, and channel pages

I am trying to cut on subscriptions costs so I'd like to cancel my YouTube Premium sub for a while. Are there any ad blockers that reliably block ads on YT at the moment? I am currently using Safari (not sure if I will stick to it yet), so something that works with Safari is best. At the moment I am using the AdGuard extension. Thanks!

YouTube is testing another way to combat ad blockers

YouTube continues its efforts to circumvent ad blockers. Earlier this week, ad blocker SponsorBlock posted that the Google-owned video service is testing out server-side ad injection with a limited number of users.

Essentially, this means that the ad is injected into the video before it arrives on your device (in contrast to client-side ad injection, where the ads arrive at your device separately), making it harder for software to detect and block the ad.

“This breaks sponsorblock since now all timestamps are offset by the ad times,” SponsorBlock said.

A Google spokesperson seemed to confirm the test in a statement, writing that the service is “improving its performance and reliability in serving both organic and ad video content,” with an update that “may result in suboptimal viewing experiences for viewers with ad blockers installed.”

Google reiterated its position that ad blockers “violate YouTube’s Terms of Service” and that viewers who want an ad-free experience should sign up for YouTube Premium.

This is just the latest move in an ongoing battle, with YouTube constantly finding new ways to get around ad blockers and the ad blockers then trying to adapt. In fact, the company rolled out a pop-up message last year that essentially prevented visitors from watching videos on YouTube unless they disabled their ad blockers.

When I spoke to the companies behind several ad blockers last fall, Ghostery’s director of product and engineering Krzysztof Modras told me that “as one of the world’s largest publishers, YouTube constantly invests in circumventing ad blocking” and that it “seems to be adapting [its] methods more frequently than ever before.”

More recently, an email from another ad blocker, AdGuard, suggested that while the server-side approach is new to YouTube on the web, the service has already been doing something similar in its mobile apps. 

AdGuard said it remains “optimistic that solutions will emerge, albeit requiring concerted efforts and innovative approaches from ad-blocking developers and ad filtering community.”

YouTube reportedly now injects ads directly into video streams to make it more difficult for ad blockers to block advertisements.

The report comes from SponsorBlock, a third-party browser extension that crowdsources data about which video segments contain sponsored content and skips them.

SponsorBlock reports that server-side ad injection will break its functionality, though solutions are coming. Most notably, it will also impact the effectiveness of other ad-blocking extensions people use on YouTube.

Server-side ad injection

Currently, YouTube performs client-side ad injection, where JavaScript scripts and the video player on a user's device load and display ads.

The video stream and ads are separate, and the player is programmed to pause the content and play ads at designated points.

Most ad blockers commonly disable YouTube ads by blocking the JavaScript scripts used to inject the advertisement into the video stream. SponsorBlock works a bit differently by crowdsourcing the information about different segments in a video and allowing users to skip those that are sponsored segments.

"SponsorBlock is an open-source crowdsourced browser extension and open API for skipping sponsor segments in YouTube videos," explains the extension's website.

"Users submit when a sponsor happens from the extension, and the extension automatically skips sponsors it knows about using a  privacy preserving query system ."

Server-side ad injection integrates the advertisements directly into the video stream before the content is delivered to the viewer, so users receive a continuous stream that already has the ads built into it.

SponsorBlock explains that YouTube streams videos using a series of smaller video segments or "chunks," which are stitched together to create a continuous video playback experience.

A manifest file determines the order in which these chunks are played, and when a user clicks on a video, the YouTube server sends a playlist that includes both content and ad chunks.

This approach complicates SponsorBlocks functionality because it offsets timestamps for sponsored content, and depending on the duration of the ads, the offset varies.

At the same time, it creates difficulties for ad blockers, which will be less capable of detecting the ads that are now part of the continuous stream, eliminating easily detectable client-side injections.

Solutions and workarounds

SponsorBlocks says it has resorted to blocking submissions from browsers experiencing server-side ad injection to prevent data corruption. However, this will become unsustainable as YouTube moves to server-side injection at a greater scale.

In the future, the tool will attempt to calculate ad duration through various detectable metadata and YouTube's user interface elements, but the system isn't ready yet.

For ad blockers, potential solutions include developing more sophisticated detection algorithms, leveraging metadata analysis, and using advanced pattern recognition to identify sudden changes in audio/video that may indicate the playback of ads.

BleepingComputer has contacted YouTube to request a comment on its server-side injection plans, and a spokesperson has sent us the following statement:

YouTube is improving its performance and reliability in serving both organic and ad video content. This update may result in suboptimal viewing experiences for viewers with ad blockers installed. Ad blockers violate YouTube’s Terms of Service, and we've been urging viewers for some time to support their favorite creators and allow ads on YouTube or try YouTube Premium for an ad-free experience. - Google spokesperson

Looking at Amazon, for example. Prime no longer covers everything ad free, some content is free with ads. But the vast majority are snippets of other movies or shows, not intrusive, fairly well done and short enough to not be annoying. I don't mind that at all, it's actually useful. Just please, no toilet paper, detergent and s*** like that. And i don't need ads to convince that i need a new truck.

This is going to kill alot of sites and apps that sell themselves on the idea of being able to block youtube ads. I am still using skipvids.com and its blocking the ads, but my other extensions are now failing to block these new types of ads :(

I wonder what all the school teachers will do now to get their content off of YT to try and show to the class off-line? Using ClipGrab, or the ytdownload open source CG uses, how will anyone be able to watch anything anymore from YT off-line? Didn't the public win over that open source YT ripper? We'll just have to wait to see what the mouse figures out after the cat puts this out in full force..
