Kundadri hill shimoga

Standing tall at 826 meters. Kundadri is a hill that is stuck near Agumbe, amidst the western ghats of Shimoga. It is a lesser-known tourist destination, barring locals, no one is hardly aware of it. Maybe it is because of this very reason that this hill is still able to restore all its beauty and glory. On a clear day, Kundadri hill will host an amazing view of dense forests, paddy fields, a series of rolling green mountains, wandering streams, and meandering valleys. Above all,  the view of a never-ending sky filled with cotton candy-like clouds is sure to stun any individual. Last but not least, never miss an opportunity to witness the sunset or sunrise that offers a feast to the eye and soul.

Kundadri hill is home to a 17th-century Jain temple that is dedicated to Tirthankara. The 23rd Tirthankara “Parshwanath” is the main deity of this temple. There are many beautifully carved stone statues inside the temple. Besides this, there are 2 small ponds with emerald green water next to the temple beautifying the hills. Not just that, this is the place where Jain monk “Acharya Kundakunda”  meditated thousands of years ago. Hence, this place is known as the Kundadri hills.

Jain Temple On Kundadri Hills

As the dusk settles making way for the moon and stars, try pitching in your tents next to the temple. If you are camping, then collect firewoods and put up a bonfire, as nights are breezy and cold. You can settle down comfortably on the rocks and gaze at twinkling stars by forgetting all the bitterness that life threw at you.

Kundadri Hill Trek

Trek to Kundadri Hill is a 7-kilometer long journey and it will take about 3 hours to reach the peak. You have to follow the rugged narrow path which will lead you to the summit, from the base of the hill. Moreover, there won’t be any confusion as the route is straightforward and easy.

In most parts of the trek, you will be hiking through wild vegetation, rugged terrains, small streams, and slippery rocks. In the midway, you will come across Varahi dam, where travelers usually make a stopover or break for lunch. While you are climbing the stunning view of natural landscapes and ever-changing sceneries is sure to keep you entertained.

Another best thing is you can drive or ride all the way up to the peak. It is an all-season road and roads are in great condition, so don’t worry about them. However, be careful while driving because the route is narrow, steep, and full of hairpin bends.

You will hardly find any shacks or shops that serve food near the temple. Moreover, if you are someone who can’t stay away from food for too long, then try carrying food or snacks.

At a distance of 17 km from Agumbe, and 96 km from Shimoga, Kundadri is a beautiful hill top located near Agumbe in the Shimoga district of Karnataka, India. It is one of the top places of trekking in Karnataka , and among the must-visit places as part of Agumbe tour packages . Rising at an altitude of 3,200 feet, the Kundadri hill is known for the 17th-century Jain temple dedicated to Parshwanath Tirthankara. The name Kundadri is believed to be derived from the name of Acharya Kundakunda, a popular 4th century Jain Monk, who is said to have taken shelter in these hills. The small temple, along with two small ponds form the only building on top of Kundadri hills. The Jain Temple is particularly crowded amid the season of Makara Sankranti in January. Boasting dense jungles of the Western Ghats, Kundadri is a trekker's haven and a paradise for nature lovers. A rough, 7 km rugged narrow path leads to the top of the hill and is a moderate trek. The trail can be a bit challenging at first but quickly becomes simpler and more rewarding as you take in the stunning scenery around you. One can also reach the top by driving your way up, except for the last fifty steps or so. However, the area is best explored whilst trekking in the surrounding jungles. Agumbe Rainforest Trip ( Monsoon Special) – From Bangalore

  • Group Size: 8 - 12

kundadri trek

Hello Explorers!

Before reading anything further, watch the video below to have a sneak peek into the magical world of  Agumbe !

This monsoons, Muddie Trails heartfully brings you the unique combination of lush green mountains, thunderous waterfalls, thrilling Hikes, misty valleys, beautiful fort, remote village homestay with delicious Malnad style food.

A whole new ecosystem comes to life when monsoons hit Western Ghats. Agumbe rainforest has once even surpassed Cherrapunji of Meghalaya as the place with the highest rainfall. It rains so much that, all the lakes & streams overflow, they form plenty of waterfalls (some of them as gigantic as Jog falls, which is in the same district) and forests soak enough water that feeds rivers till next summer.

Nestled in the heart of tropical rainforests with rich biodiversity, Agumbe is located at a distance of 380 Km from Bangalore. It receives more than 7,500 mm of mean annual rainfall, one of the highest in India. Trekking through its forests to visit the waterfalls is a delight to nature lovers.

Agumbe is also called King Cobra capital because of the highest density of snakes found here. However, they usually do not come on our trek path, and trekkers are cautioned not to wander into the forest. It’s not surprising to find common non-venomous snakes like a green vine, different species of frogs, reptiles, and other amphibians.

Highlights of the trip:

  • Kavaledurga Fort Trek (Easy)
  • Rainforest Waterfalls
  • Silent Lake
  • Nagara Fort (Green carpet)
  • Rainforest Pools (Rainforest special experience)
  • Kundadri Hills (Highest road access to Agumbe)
  • Sringeri Temple & Hanging bridge
  • Campfire (if no rain)
  • Malnad style veggie food
  • Travel (Tempo or mini-bus, Non AC), Tolls
  • Village homestay (separate dorms with mattress for guys and girls), hot water, clean washrooms
  • Food: 2 Breakfasts, 1 Lunch, 1 Evening snacks, 1 Dinner (all pure Veg)
  • Experience all places mentioned in the Highlights section
  • Entry tickets & forest permissions
  • Campfire (if it doesn’t rain at that time)

  • Start from Bangalore, an overnight journey

Day 1 - Around Agumbe Rainforest

  • Reach homestay close to the forest, freshen up
  • Fuel up with a nice Malnad style breakfast
  • Drive to the base of ancient Kavaledurga Fort, start hiking up to enjoy the mesmerizing trek route that starts with lush green rice fields that give way to a human-made path made with boulders
  • There is an ancient temple in the middle and many ponds that served as water stores at that time
  • This is a 2.5 Km easy trek (one way) with stunning views of the rainforest from the top
  • Head back to the vehicle, jungle walk of 1 km to take a dip under the pristine Rainforest Waterfalls of Western Ghats that is Agumbe special, have lunch overlooking the falls.
  • Visit a giant silent lake in the lap of rainforest. Spend rest of the evening in the peaceful setting.
  • Head back to the homestay by late evening.
  • Have some snacks with tea.
  • Bonfire at night (if it doesn’t rain or not damp) with long conversations in the dark. In rainy season chances are less.
  • Well deserved hot vegetarian dinner.

Day 2 - Nagara Fort, Rainforest Pools, Kundadri Hills

About Kundadri Hill, Shimoga

Kundadri Hill is located in the Western Ghats in the Shimogha District of Karnataka. Kundadri  is mountain peak crowning dense forests. As well as the lush mountainside, there is a Jain temple at the top of the mountain. It is known to have provided shelter to Kundakunda Acharya more than thousands of years ago which brought about the birth of this Jain holy place. It holds a Jain temple dedicated to the Tirthankara built in the 17th century. This temple is enclosed by two ponds that were formed by the rocks. Though the Jain temple is not that spectacular, the view and air quality makes the walk worthwhile. There are two natural ponds next to the temple. Lotus flowers and fish can be found in the pools.

You can make a one day outing out of this place while covering Agumbe which is also a great sunset point like this. It is advised to go during Monsoons or to vising in the mornings or evenings for a mesmerizing view. It is only about 75 km from Udupi, well connected by buses. But if you want to drive to this place, beware of the sharp turns and steep slopes. You can also choose to trek up to the top but it is a challenging trek through the lush green forest, blessed with a scenic view.
