The Best Tours to Take in Barcelona in 2024 and Why

Sean Finelli Last Updated: October 29, 2023

Barcelona is really big. It’s the second-most-populous city in Spain. This makes it nearly impossible to see all the sights without a plan in advance. Luckily, we have several tours to make your Barcelona vacation one that you won’t soon forget! Here are the best Barcelona tours to take.

Pro Tip: Planning ahead will help your trip run smoothly, so consider bookmarking this page in your browser. Also, check out our guide to Barcelona —it has helpful information about restaurants, hotels, and activities.

Should You Take a Tour of Barcelona?

Barcelona is a great city to visit, which shows in the number of visitors here each year. This is due to the density of cultural attractions, great food, beautiful landscapes, and really fun people. That said, what should you do when in the city?

Well-organized small group tours are a great way to introduce yourself to a city and learn things that you wouldn’t learn on your own. Tours take a lot of the guesswork out of visiting attractions and you get great knowledge from a local.

Meeting locals comes with many other perks such as picking their brain about other great places to visit, restaurants, and where to go out at night. A tapas bar that locals love is going to be so much better than a tourist trap. These are just a few reasons why taking a tour in Barcelona is totally worth it. Here are some of our best Barcelona tours and some reviews from real customers!

The Sagrada Família is not only one of the most celebrated buildings in Barcelona but in the entire world. With its highly decorative towers, this church is one of the most visited buildings due to its unique design. You can look at the architecture and have no idea the stories behind it, or you can go with a super knowledgeable guide who brings it to life.

Due to its popularity, the tower is typically plagued by long lines and even longer waits. What’s worse is that tickets often sell out quickly, meaning you might waste time in a line for nothing. The solution is to book ahead with a tour group to ensure guaranteed access and a memorable visit. Best of all, with us you’ll skip the line and save your vacation time!

3. Barcelona Food and Wine Tour with a Local Sommelier

Eat your way through Barcelona with this fun and popular food tour. Centered around the vibrant neighborhoods of Poble Sec and Sant Antoni, this tour includes a variety of local, authentic cuisine, including Barcelona’s best tapas and a traditional Spanish dinner at a Barcelona bodega. These aren’t your typical bodegas; these are beautiful restaurants brimming with vibrancy, culture, and local food.

Before you think this tour is all about the food, trust us that you’ll wash it all down with traditional Spanish vermouth and cava (sparkling wine). With your local sommelier guide, explore some wine pairings. By the end of this tour, you’ll have tasted your way through Spanish history, and learned quite a few things along the way. It’s, hands down, the most in-depth food tour in Barcelona and not one to miss.

This tour takes you past the famous Sagrada Família, and through the Gothic Quarter before seeing Olympic Village and Port Vell for incredible views of the Mediterranean. In just half a day, you’ll explore more of Barcelona’s top areas so you can really get to know this beautiful city.

6. Barcelona Scenic Cruises by Sailboat

Group enjoy a cruise, on one of the best tours of Barcelona

Part of the attraction to Barcelona is the warm weather and coastal views which is why cruises are so popular there! While we love historical tours and activities, its nice to take a breather on a sailboat with a cold beverage in hand.

What people love about Barcelona Tours

Tour was disorganized. We had to switch buses midday. Okay for price.
Had a wonderful time, the tour guide was very helpful and the hotels were of good standard.
The itinerary was good; liked the fact that we had a lot of time on our own and that we had the same hotel at least 2 nights in a row. Did not like the fact that we had to take a public bus to our hotel with luggage in tow, and that we had to drag our luggage to various pick-up stops. We have not experienced that on prior tours. The day in Cordoba was poorly planned, leaving us no time to tour the city on our own as was promised. Otherwise everything was fine.

Fantastic. Highly Recommended for Families

“We did 2 private tours and both were just fantastic, a Modernisme tour with Ann Marie and a streets tour with Tati and our 4 children loved both. It really made Barcelona come alive for them and  we  learnt so much about the history and the art that  we  would have otherwise have missed.”

Interesting and Fun Tour

“Miguel was just right. He was informative, light-hearted and joked along with us with his excellent English. He made the tour entertaining and he was flexible in what we wanted to do. Highly recommended.”

A must do in Barcelona!

“The 11:00 free walking tour Barcelona of the Gothic Quarter was amazingly informative and no amount of research of mine could have compared to the constant flow of interesting narration by Gorka. It is a must do!”

What a fabulous experience!!!

“We did the tour with Marc today. He was enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and friendly. We were enchanted by tales of Gaudi. It is the best tour you’ll have in Barcelona.”

In Out Barcelona Tours is a travel agency formed by professionals with more than 20 years of experience in the tourism sector. We are specialized in carrying out tours with small groups visiting the main tourist attractions of Barcelona and Catalonia. We make regular trips with pick up and drop off service at your hotel, always with professional guides. We also offer private tours for your family, friends and colleagues. Our small group philosophy allows us to offer a deeper integration within the local culture and a closer experience with its inhabitants, promoting sustainable tourism. It also allows us to reach less accessible places away from mass tourism. For example, little villages and local restaurants where we may taste the regional gastronomy, panoramic country roads of Costa Brava, museums that don't allow big tour groups - like Casa Dalí in Portlligat - and other non-mainstream spots out of the crowds. Working with small groups makes it possible to customize the visits depending on the client's expectations, as well as offering a closer experience with the guide and the local culture. Affordable prices for a little bit more than big groups with pick up and drop off at accommodation included. All our guides are passionate and specialized in the tours they lead. They are lovers of the history and culture of Barcelona and Catalonia who will make you fall in love with the region as well. During our tours you will visit the best of Barcelona, enjoy wonderful views from Montjuïc and its Olympic area, visit the Old Town, the main points of modernism and Gaudí's works like Sagrada Familia, Park Güell and Casa Batlló, or the stadium of Barça. We also offer tours out of the city and around Catalonia, with destinations like Montserrat, the Theater-Museum of surrealist Dalí in Figueres and its House-Museum in Portlligat Cadaqués. The colorful landscapes of Costa Brava, the wine regions of Penedès and Priorat, and the medieval town Girona known for being the scene of TV series Game of Thrones. The Roman city Tarragona and its spectacular and perfectly preserved aqueduct, as well as other places that represent the Catalan culture. Enjoy a unique experience with us!

The top 10 day trips from Barcelona, from divine sights to beautiful beaches

Dec 6, 2023 • 7 min read

There are lots of lovely restaurants in the square surrounding the cathedral in Tarragona

Tarragona has lots of lovely restaurants in the square surrounding the cathedral © frantic00 / Getty Images

You could spend weeks in Barcelona and never run out of neighborhoods to explore , things to do , food to try and bars to hop.

But for a taste of Catalan life beyond the metropolis – or simply for a change of pace – take a day trip from Barcelona to experience the mountains, beaches and pretty little towns that are just a short ride away. Here are the 10 best short escapes from beautiful Barcelona.

1. Savor divinely beautiful views in Montserrat

Travel time: 1 hour, 20 minutes

The mountain of  Montserrat  is home to  Catalonia 's holiest site, the monastery of the same name. The views are spectacular – take walking shoes – and season permitting, you might be able to catch a choir performance inside the  basilica . Afterward, ride the funicular or take a walk down to the  Santa Cova , the spot where La Moreneta – a holy effigy of the virgin – was found, or up to the Sant Jeroni peak for a splendid view of the valley below.

How to get to Montserrat from Barcelona:  The R5 line trains operated by FGC run half-hourly to hourly to and from Barcelona's Plaça d’Espanya station. Next, get the AERI cable car to the monastery from the Montserrat Aeri stop. Alternatively, take the R5 to the next stop (Monistrol de Montserrat), from where cremallera trains run up to the monastery every 20 to 40 minutes.

An onboard camera captures the moment when a cyclist rides through the forests of Collserola, a natural park near the city of Barcelona.

2. Escape the city to the forests of Collserola

Travel time: 15 minutes

Barcelonins seek out the vast  Parc de Collserola  up in the hills for an escape from city life. Walking and cycling trails run throughout the park, which is dotted with farmhouse-style restaurants. Pick up a map of the various routes from the info center at Carretera de l’Església 92, close to the Baixador de Vallvidrera FGC train station. From here, those with a bit of energy can walk across the hills to Sant Cugat and take the train back to Barcelona from there.

How to get to Collserola from Barcelona:  Get the FGC suburban train from Plaça de Catalunya, Carrer de Provença or Gràcia to Baixador de Vallvidrera.

3. Sunbathe and party in Sitges

Travel time: 40 minutes

The pretty, whitewashed town of  Sitges  is perfect for seafront promenading and sun-worshiping, so in warmer weather, you’ll find the most central beaches quite crowded. Luckily, there are quite a few to choose from, so pick your spot for a morning of sunbathing (or skinny dipping off the nudist beach) before choosing a seafood restaurant nearby.

It’s not all about the sea in Sitges. If you have an interest in contemporary art and in the Modernisme movement, the classy old center’s array of elegant buildings – many housing museums – is well worth some of your time. The town also has great nightlife and a vibrant LGBTIQ+ scene. One of Spain's best Carnaval celebrations is held here (dates change annually), and October brings the Sitges International Film Festival to town.

How to get to Sitges from Barcelona:  From 5am to 10pm, regular trains run from Barcelona Passeig de Gràcia and Sants. Monbus runs from Barcelona every 15 to 50 minutes.

Woman looking at colorfully painted buildings in Girona, Spain

4. Walk through a rainbow in Girona

Travel time: 1 hour and 15 minutes

Girona 's old town is a tight huddle of ancient arcaded houses, grand churches and sloped cobbled streets, with the grand cathedral  looming over it. Until the virtual expulsion of the Jewish population in 1492, Girona was home to a huge Jewish community, and the  Museu d’Història dels Jueus  tells their story.

For a different slice of history, visit the 12th-century  Banys Àrabs  (Arab Baths), which was used as a filming location in  Game of Thrones , and the pretty Romanesque  Monestir de Sant Pere de Galligants . Stroll along the Onyar River to look at the colorfully painted houses that flank it or to reach the newer part of town, where you’ll find some excellent tapas bars.

If your pockets are deep enough, Girona also has one of the world’s best restaurants:  El Celler de Can Roca .

How to get to Girona from Barcelona:  Take the train from Barcelona, which runs about every 30 minutes.

5. Relax in friendly and welcoming Vilanova i la Geltrú

Travel time: 45 minutes

Just down the coast beyond Sitges (there is a lovely, hour-long walk along the cliffs you can do to reach it), Vilanova i la Geltrú is a larger, more down-home version that has long dedicated its efforts more to fishing and industry than the leisure business, with a pleasantly unpretentious air.

If you want to spend the day on the beach, Vilanova i la Geltrú is an excellent place to do it. There are some decent, wide beaches (head straight to the south for a lovely little cove) and an interesting railway museum, the Museu del Ferrocarril .

How to get to Vilanova i la Geltrú from Barcelona:  From 5am to 10pm, regular trains run from Barcelona.

6. Revel in Roman ruins in Tarragona

Travel time: 1 hour

Of a similar size and scale to Girona,  Tarragona  is known for its Roman remains. Since the  Museu d’Història de Tarragona  – which comprises the main Roman sites – tends to be busiest from mid-morning onward, it’s best to start with its  Amfiteatre Romà  and the  Fòrum Provincial  or the excellent  Museu Nacional Arqueològic de Tarragona , which gives a useful overview of the city’s impressive Roman past.

Afterward, head for the grand  cathedral , followed by lunch in one of the many restaurants thereabouts or in the fishing neighborhood of El Serrallo, where you’ll find many fine seafood restaurants.

How to get to Tarragona from Barcelona:  The train station is a 10-minute walk south of the old town near the beach, with services to and from Barcelona every 10 to 30 minutes.

Inside the theatre of the Dali Theatre and Museum in Figueres Spain

7. Get surreal in Figueres

Travel time: 2 hours

Figueres  has some handsome Modernista architecture, a sprawling 18th-century castle  and a delightful little toy museum, the  Museu del Joguet , but it is best known for the  Teatre-Museu Dalí .

A former theater, it was converted by Dalí himself into a palace of surrealism, protected by tall red walls that bristle with giant eggs, Oscar-like statues and plaster croissants. Inside, you’ll find paintings, a jewelry collection designed by Dalí and some entertaining trompe l’oeil installations. A Teatre-Museu Dalí ticket will get you free entry to the  Museu de l'Empordà , a fantastic art and archaeology museum that's considered one of the best in the region.

How to get to Figueres from Barcelona:  Figueres train station, 800m (0.5 miles) southeast of the center, has half-hourly trains to and from Barcelona.

8. Step back in time in medieval Montblanc

Montblanc is a good-sized medieval walled town with a decent selection of places to eat and sleep. It’s worth a visit on its own merits; however, ideally, you should go with a car to fully explore the Cistercian Route, a triad of stunning monasteries within easy reach of one another at  Poblet ,  Vallbona de les Monges  and  Santes Creues . You’ll need to set off early if you are hoping to see all three.

How to get to Montblanc from Barcelona: Five direct trains a day run from Barcelona Passeig de Gràcia and Sants; the first is around 7am.

A child rides a bike and people walk around Plaça Mayor in Vic, Spain

9. Shop the local markets in Vic

Travel time: 1 hour, 30 minutes

Vic, with its attractive historic center and some fine restaurants, dominates the flatlands of La Plana de Vic to the south of the Pyrenees and is an easy train ride from Barcelona. Plaça Major, the largest of Catalunya’s central squares, is lined with medieval, Baroque and Modernista mansions. It is still the scene of regular markets, hence its other name, Plaça del Mercadal.

How to get to Vic from Barcelona:  Regular rodalies trains (line R3) run to and from Barcelona.

10. Find a buried treasure in Colònia Güell

Apart from La Sagrada Família , Gaudí’s last big project was the creation of a utopian textile workers’ complex for his magnate patron Eusebi Güell outside Barcelona at Santa Coloma de Cervelló. Gaudí’s main role was to erect the colony’s church,  Colònia Güell , although he only managed to finish the crypt, which is open to visitors. Its mostly brick-clad columns that support the ribbed vaults in the ceiling are inclined at all angles in much the same way that trees in a forest lean and are key to understanding the physics behind his magnum opus, the Sagrada Família.

How to get to Colònia Güell from Barcelona:  Take FGC lines S4, S8 or S33 to Colònia Güell.

Why Barcelona Great Tours?

We are an engaged group of self-employed freelancers and small local business owners, who share the same mission and vision. We have decided to combine our efforts to create new projects and keep a more sustainable model of tourism, working in full cooperation with the community.

Most of us have worked all our lives under big tour operators’ brand names and we know first-hand the good and bad of it.

Best tour company in Barcelona

We used this fantastic tour company last summer and now again after a relocation cruise. I have to say they are terrific! All the time punctual, totally flexible during our tours (we were a party of 6). During our cruise other passengers ask us about a reliable tour company in Barcelona and I said e-mail to Barcelona Great Tours, they are the best company I ever used. Two days ago I received an email from our friends to thank me our suggestion. Tour Company 100% recommendable. Price are better because they own the vehicles, is not only a website, no intermediaries that raise the price

The 30 Best Things to See and Do in Barcelona

Panoramic views over the city and beach of Barcelona, Spain in the summer

In recent years, Barcelona has become one of the most popular destinations in Europe. While 5 million people call the city home, over 32 million travelers visit each and every year. (It is actually one of the worst cities in the world for overtourism so visit in the off-season!)

Despite the crowds, I love visiting Barcelona. Every visit makes me fall in love with it over and over again.

The city is the capital of the Catalonia region in Spain, an area that has been fighting for independence for many years. In fact, Barcelonans consider themselves to be Catalonian — not Spanish.

Barcelona was established by the Romans as a colony called Barcino (be sure to visit the ruins underneath the city), but the first human settlements in Barcelona actually date back to Neolithic times. The city became the economic and political center of the Western Mediterranean in the Middle Ages and it still has incredible Gothic structures all over the place. The more recent architecture includes Gaudí’s work from the 19th and 20th centuries – it dots every district and adds a flamboyant charm to the city.

Barcelona is also a foodie’s dream destination. Fro traditional dishes like tortilla, paella, jamón ibérico and patatas bravas, to Catalonian specialties such as pamtomaquet (Catalonian bread with tomato), esqueixada (salt cod) and bombas (fried potato balls), Barcelona is haven for foodies like me who like to eat our way around a new destination.

With delicious food, incredible history and architecture, perfect weather, and a lively nightlife, Barcelona is a city that can entertain anyone .

To help you make the most of your next visit, here are the best things to see and do in Barcelona. They will give you a feel for the city, allow you to eat all the best food, and get you away from the overbearing crowds!

1. Take a Free Walking Tour

People walking in a park in springtime, with the Sagrada Familia in the background, in Barcelona, Spain

  • Free Walking Tours Barcelona
  • Tours By Foot

For paid tour options, check out Get Your Guide . They have tons of tours for every interest and budget!

2. Get Lost in the Barri Gotic

The Bridge of Sighs, an intricately designed covered walkway connecting two buildings in Barcelona's gothic quarter

3. Visit the Museum of the History of Barcelona

I’ve visited a lot of city museums over the years, but Barcelona has one of the best there is. Opened in 1943, the museum is home to over 4,000 square meters of Roman ruins (located below the museum) that you can walk through. There is also a free (and quite detailed) audio guide as well as meticulous explanations of the exhibits. Even if you’re not a history buff, you’ll get a lot out of this museum. It gives a much better sense of the city and its past (and the ruins really are amazing!).

Plaça del Rei, +34 932 56 21 00, ajuntament.barcelona.cat/museuhistoria/ca. Open Tuesday-Sunday from 10am-7pm (8pm on Sundays). Check the website for extra details as not all the attractions are open every day. Admission is 7 EUR per person.

4. See the Grand Royal Palace

Built in the 14th century, the Palau Reial Major was the home of Barcelona’s counts. Located near the history museum, it later housed the Kings of Aragon (the rulers who presided over the region) from 1035 until the 15th century (though most of the palace remains date to the 14th century). It is also said that this is where Christopher Columbus returned after his “discovery” voyage to North America. The palace is made up of three distinct buildings which were all built at different times (two of which are considered gothic masterpieces). Inside, the exhibits showcase a detailed history of the city and region.

The Palace shares hours and admission costs with The Museum of the History of Barcelona above.

5. Admire Barcelona Cathedral

The famous Barcelona Cathedral lit up at night

If you do want to go inside (and you should), be sure to visit the upper terraces as you’ll get an incredible view of the city.

Placita de la Seu 3, +34 933 428 262, catedralbcn.org. Open Monday-Saturday from 9:30am-6:30pm (until 5:15pm on Saturdays) and closed on Sundays and some holidays. For those looking to worship, the cathedral is open daily from 8:30am-12:30pm and 5:45pm-7:30pm on weekdays (times vary slightly at weekends). Admission is 14 EUR for tourists and free for worshipers. Skip-the-line tickets are 18 EUR.

6. Wander Park Güell

The famous Park Güell with its whimsical architecture at sunset in Barcelona, Spain

The focal point of the park is the main terrace, which is surrounded by a long bench in the form of a sea serpent. The park is right near the famous La Sagrada Familia so it’s easy to visit both back to back. It’s a beautiful and colorful park but it also gets busy so try to go early or on a weekday when the crowds are thinner.

Carrer d’Olot, parkguell.barcelona/en. Open daily from 9:30am-6:00pm from April-October (closing times vary in winter and spring). Admission for the interior section is 13 EUR per person. Guided tours are available for 22 EUR. If you buy tickets, make sure you book them in advance as they sell out quickly.

7. See La Sagrada Família

The famous Sagrada Familia cathedral on a sunny spring day in Barcelona, Spain

Like all of Gaudí’s work , the church (which was consecrated as a minor basilica in 2010) blends various themes and influences and is a mix of both Gothic and Art Nouveau styles.

While you can take in the church from the outside, I’d encourage you to explore the interior with an audio guide. It covers the entire history of the church and will give you an insightful overview of this unique (and massive) project.

If you can, try to visit between mid-morning and late afternoon so you can see the sunlight cascade throughout all the stained glass.

Plaça de la Sagrada Familia, +34 932 080 414, sagradafamilia.org. Open April through September, Monday-Saturday 9am-8pm, and on Sundays, 10:30am-8pm (the rest of the year closing times are an hour or two earlier). Skip-the-line tickets (with an audio guide) are 33.80 EUR. Book in advance as they disappear quickly.

8. Explore La Boquería

Crowds of people walking around the bustling Boquería market in Barcelona, Spain

Since it’s right off La Rambla it gets incredibly busy so try to get there early. There’s a wide variety of seafood, including fish, shrimp, octopus, and oysters, as well as nuts, candy, wine, and tapas. It’s a cheap place to grab a snack as you explore the city.

Rambla, 91, +34 934 132 303, boqueria.barcelona/home. Open Monday to Saturday from 8am-8:30pm.

9. Visit Casa Batlló and Casa Milà

The whimsically designed Casa Batlló in Barcelona, Spain

Just a couple hundred meters away from Casa Batlló is Casa Milà. Known as La Pedrera (“the Stone Quarry”), this building has a facade of limestone (hence the nickname). Built from 1906-1910, Gaudí’s goal was to evoke the sense of a snowy mountain. He also planned for Casa Milà to be a spiritual symbol (he was a devout Catholic) and included lots of religious elements in the design, such as an excerpt from the rosary prayer along the cornice. He also included statues of Mary, St. Michael, and St. Gabriel.

Casa Batlló: Passeig de Gràcia 43, +34 93 216 0306, casabatllo.es. Open weekdays from 9am-8:30pm and weekends from 9am-10pm. Tickets are 35 EUR .

Casa Milà: Passeig de Gràcia 92, +34 93 214 2576, lapedrera.com. Open daily 9am-6:30pm and 7pm-10pm for night tours in winter and 9am-8:30pm and 9pm-11pm in summer. Skip-the-line tickets with an audio guide are 25 EUR.

10. Visit the Picasso Museum

This is the most comprehensive collection of Pablo Picasso’s works in the world. Opened in 1963, the museum is home to over 4,000 works by Picasso. While I’m personally not a huge fan of Picasso’s later work, it’s still interesting to learn about his life and work as he was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. While his style is unique and not for everyone, the museum is nevertheless worth a visit. It’s amazing to see how his art changed and evolved over the course of his life.

Carrer Montcada 15-23, +34 93 256 30 00, museupicasso.bcn.cat/en. Open Tuesday-Sunday from 10am-7pm. Admission is 14 EUR per person, with free entry on Thursdays from 5pm-7pm and on the first Sunday of the month. A guided Picasso-themed walking tour that includes entrance to the museum at the end is 42 EUR.

11. Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA)

This museum has over 5,000 works dating from the mid-20th century onwards. The collection includes an extensive collection of pieces by Spanish artists such as Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso. There are also works by Americans Andy Warhol and Alexander Calder. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of modern art but if you are, be sure to add this to your itinerary!

Plaça dels Àngels 1, +34 934 12 08 10, macba.cat/en. Open weekdays from 11am-7:30pm, Saturdays from 10am-8pm, and Sundays/Public Holidays from 10am-3pm (closed on Tuesdays except public holidays). Admission is 10.80 EUR online or 12 EUR at the door and includes unlimited return visits within a month of purchase. Entry is free on Saturdays starting at 4pm.

12. Take a Day Trip to Montserrat

The stunning Montserrat mountains near Barcelona, Spain

Be sure to visit the Santa Maria de Montserrat monastery to see the famous shrine of the Black Madonna. The monastery is built into the mountain and the Black Madonna statue is said to have been carved in Jerusalem during the early years of Christianity, though it most likely dates to the 12th century.

If you’re an art fan, visit the Art Museum Of Montserrat. It has works by Monet, Dali, Picasso, and many other famous artists. Lastly, be sure to visit the local market (it’s on the way to the monastery). It’s the perfect place to buy local products like fresh produce, cheese, honey, and artisan crafts. And if you’re an adrenaline junkie, there is tons of rock climbing to be done here as well (either solo or with a hired guide).

Tickets for the hour-long journey (via train and cable car) cost around 25 EUR (round trip). You can get them in advance here. Visiting the monastery is free, and tickets to the museum cost 8 EUR.

13. Take a Stroll on La Rambla

People walking down the famous pedestrianized street of La Rambla, with stalls lining both sides in Barcelona, Spain

14. Hit the Beach

The boardwalk and beach of Barcelona, Spain

15. Watch Some Flamenco

Flamenco is a traditional style of Spanish music and dance. It originated in Andalusia but there are plenty of places to see it in Barcelona. It’s a lively, expressive style known for its intricate footwork and hand movements. If you’re looking to take in a show, Barcelona has a few affordable venues where you can watch a performance:

  • Los Tarantos – This is the oldest flamenco venue in the city. Performances are just 40 minutes so it’s a good place for an introduction. Plaça Reial, 17, +34 933 041 210, tarantosbarcelona.com/en. Shows run at 6:30pm, 7:30pm and 8:30pm. Tickets start at 25 EUR.
  • Palau Dalmases – One of the best things about the flamenco shows here is the venue. This palace has amazing décor and incredible architecture. Carrer de Montcada, 20, +34 660 76 98 65, flamencopalaudalmases.com. Shows run at 5pm, 6:45pm, 8:30 and 10pm. Tickets start at 25 EUR.
  • Tablao Flamenco Cordobes – This show is in a convenient location on Barcelona’s main walkway, but it’s expensive. La Rambla, 35, +34 933 17 57 11, tablaocordobes.es. Shows run twice each evening (check the website for times). Admission is 46 EUR (drink and show) or 82 EUR (dinner and show).

16. Ride the Port Cable Car

The 1,450-meter-long harbor aerial tramway with red cars connects Barceloneta and Montjuïc (a prominent hill). The 10-minute ride offers picturesque views of the entire city. You’ll see the port and sea on one side and the city on the other. Also, at the top of the 78-meter Sant Sebastià (San Sebastián) tower in Barceloneta, there’s a restaurant accessible by an elevator. If you want to hike instead, there are a few different trails to the summit, most taking around 3 hours.

Miramar station (Paseo Juan de Borbón) and San Sebastián Tower (Avda. de Miramar), +34 93 430 47 16, telefericodebarcelona.com/en. Open daily from 11am-5:30pm (10:30am-8pm in the summer). Round-trip tickets cost 20 EUR.

17. Explore Montjuïc Hill

The National Museum on Montjuïc Hill in Barcelona, Spain

You’ll also find the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya here, a Catalonian art museum. It features mostly Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque works ( tickets are 12 EUR ). The fountain out front has a spectacular free show on Fridays and Saturdays.

Additionally, don’t miss the Olympic Ring (the main area of the 1992 Olympic Games) and Poble Espanyol, a replica village built in 1929 to resemble an actual traditional Spanish village. It has over 100 buildings, including an Andalusian quarter, a section of the Camino, a monastery, and more! ( Tickets are 13.50 EUR. )

Round-trip cable car tickets are 16 EUR.

Castell de Montjuïc: Carretera de Montjuïc 66, + 34 93 256 44 40 ajuntament.barcelona.cat/castelldemontjuic/en. Open Monday-Sunday from 10am-8pm (closes at 6pm in the winter). Admission is 9 EUR (13 EUR including a guided tour). It’s free on Sundays after 3pm as well as on the first Sunday of the month.

Museu Nacional: Palau Nacional, Parc de Montjuïc, +34 93 622 03 60, museunacional.cat/en. Open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am-6pm (10am-8pm in summer) and Sundays and public holidays from 10am to 3pm. Admission is 12 EUR and free on Saturdays after 3pm and on the first Sunday of the month.

Olympic Ring: Av. de Francesc Ferrer i Guàrdia, 13, +34 93 508 63 00, poble-espanyol.com/en. Open 8am-10:30pm on weekdays and 24 hours on weekends. Admission to the park is free.

18. Take a Food Tour or Cooking Class

Like the rest of Spain , Barcelona is a very foodie-centric city. While you’re here, I highly recommend taking either a cooking class or a food tour (or both!). You’ll learn about traditional Catalan cooking, get to see and sample fresh ingredients, and get to walk through local markets. Some companies to check out are:

  • Barcelona Cooking
  • Just Royal Bcn

19. Visit an Old-School Amusement Park

Built in 1899 and opened in 1901, Tibidabo Barcelona is one of the oldest amusement parks in the world. Located on a mountain in the Serra de Collserola, it offers an incredible view of Barcelona and the coastline in addition to its rides, games, and restaurants. It’s a fun activity to do with kids.

Tibidabo Square, 3-4, +34 932 11 79 42, tibidabo.cat. Hours vary depending on the season. Check the website for details. Admission is 35 EUR.

20. Take a Day Trip to Girona

View over the terracotta rooftops, with the cathedral rising above it all in Girona, Spain

Girona is a medieval city just 100km from Barcelona. It’s also one of my favorite destinations in the entire country. Here you can climb atop the city walls, wander the narrow lanes of the Jewish Quarter, and soak up the ambiance at one of its many cafés.

Don’t miss the Cathedral of Girona and the Monastery of Saint Daniel and be sure to stroll across the Eiffel Bridge (a small bridge designed by Gustave Eiffel, the man who designed the Eiffel Tower in Paris).

You can also take a Game of Thrones tour here too (scenes from King’s Landing and Braavos were filmed here). If you need a break from hectic Barcelona, this is a great place to visit.

21. Watch a Soccer Match

The first “football” game I ever watched live was in Barcelona (I still have the shirt I bought that day). Barcelona’s two biggest teams are Espanyol and FC Barcelona and, if a match is going on, try to take in one — it’s an amazing and boisterous spectacle (FC Barcelona’s stadium holds around 100,000 people)!

Like most Europeans, Spaniards are obsessed with the sport and tickets are usually not that expensive ( they typically cost around 40-50 EUR ). If you want to get a glimpse into local life (and make some friends in the process) be sure to catch a game! If you can’t get tickets to a game, both clubs offer tours of their stadium and grounds.

22. Gaze at Barcelona’s Free Public Art

The intricately designed fountain at the Parc de la Ciutadella in Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona native Joan Miró’s work is also found throughout the city. You can see his famous “Woman and Bird” sculpture at Parc de Joan Miró. There are also Miró mosaics on La Rambla and at the city’s airport.

23. Take a Bike Tour

A group of tourists biking together on a bike tour in Barcelona, Spain

24. Visit Parc del Laberint d’Horta

The manicured gardens of Parc del Laberint d'Horta in Barcelona, Spain

Park of the Labyrinth of Horta was created in 1791 and is composed of various Neoclassical and Romantic gardens as well as a huge hedge maze (which gives the park its name). The maze stretches over 750 meters while the rest of the park covers over 135 acres. The maze was created to re-enact the original Greek myth of the minotaur on Crete and is actually much trickier to complete than you think!

Passeig dels Castanyers 1, +34 931 537 010. Open daily 10am-6pm in winter or 10am-8pm in summer. Admission is 2.23 EUR and free on Wednesdays and Sundays.

25. Catch an Outdoor Film

During July and August, outdoor films are shown on the lawn of the Montjuïc Castle moat. Screenings take place on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and are preceded by some cool live music. The castle isn’t the only place to catch a movie though, Sant Sebastià beach in Barceloneta has showings on Thursdays and Sundays, Cosmonits at CosmoCaixa shows films outside the Science Museum on Thursdays (July and the first week of August), and the Cine al Aire Libre–l’Illa Diagonal also has movies on at the Gardens of San Juan De Dios on Thursday evenings in July.

Tickets are around 7.50 EUR.

26. See Palau Güell

Palau Guell (Guell Palace) is another of Gaudí’s buildings. It doesn’t jump out at you like other Gaudí structures, however. It was designed for one of Gaudí’s patrons, Eusebi Güell between 1886-88. The main party room, which the home is centered around, has a high ceiling with small holes near the top. This is where lanterns were hung at night from the outside to give the appearance of a starlit sky. There are colorful tree-like chimneys on top. It’s one of my favorites even though it’s a bit creepy and gothic!

Carrer Nou de la Rambla, 3-5, +34 934 725 775, inici.palauguell.cat/. Open daily from 10am-8pm (until 5:30pm in winter). Admission is 12 EUR (free on the first Sunday of every month).

27-31. Get Off the Beaten Path

While there are tons of popular (and crowded) sights in Barcelona, there are also lots of quirky and off-the-beaten-path things to see and do in the city. If you’re looking to explore some of the less-busy and weirder attractions of the city, here are a few worth adding to your itinerary:

  • The Erotic Museum – This small museum highlights how sex has been viewed throughout the ages, with works from Medieval Europe and Imperial Japan all the way to the present. There are paintings, drawings, artifacts, sculptures, and more. It’s one of the most unique museums in the city! Open 10am-12am Admission is 13.50 EUR .
  • Bunkers of Carmel – These bunkers were built in 1938 during the Spanish Civil War. The bunkers were left to the elements but they now offer incredible views over the city. Try to visit for the sunrise. Open 9am-7pm in summer and 9am-5:30pm in winter. Admission is free.
  • Museu de la Xocolata (Chocolate Museum) – Chocolate arrived in Spain 500 years ago, a product of trade and conquests in South America. This museum illuminates the history of chocolate and showcases all sorts of tools, sculptures (made out of chocolate), and artwork. Open Tuesday-Saturday 10am-7pm and Sundays 10am-3pm. Admission is 6 EUR.
  • Columns of the Temple of Augustus – Tucked away in the Gothic Quarter are a set of pillars over 2,000 years old. Taken from the remains of an ancient Roman temple, these 30-foot columns have stood here since the 16th century. Admission is free .

Barcelona Shore Excursions Guide & FAQ

What is the best way to explore barcelona.

Barcelona is a vast city with iconic sights at each corner of it. Therefore walking isn’t the best way to explore the city.

Instead, you may wish to consider the Hop-On Hop-Off sightseeing bus, which arrives at regular intervals and journeys to all of the major attractions.

The bus is best for those who want to view Barcelona at their own pace.

Alternatively, visiting the highlights of Barcelona via guided tour is an equally great way to explore the city and is best for those who want included transfers and to learn from a knowledgeable guide.

Is Barcelona a Walkable City?

Whilst some attractions are relatively close together much of the popular sights in Barcelona are spaced out which makes walking between them less than ideal.

You can visit pockets of the city on foot, such as the Gothic Quarter, but if you want to see as many of Barcelona’s highlights as possible, then journeying through the city via bus or taxi is preferable.

What is the Best Month to go to Barcelona?

The good news is that Barcelona is pretty much a year-round destination.

It is most popular during the height of summer as this is when Barcelona has the best weather. This is a good time if you’d like to visit the coast and have a swim in the ocean.

However, if Barcelona’s city attractions are a must for you, you will be contending with large crowds at this time of year.

I’d therefore recommend visiting Barcelona outside of the holidays. May is a nice balance between warm weather and fewer crowds, as are September and October.

What is the Nicest Part of Barcelona?

The nicest part of Barcelona really comes down to your personal preferences and tastes.

The Gothic Quarter is perfect for those who love medieval monuments and winding narrow streets.

It is the oldest part of the city and home to several important landmarks, including the Cathedral of Barcelona, which is one of the city’s most impressive Gothic structures.

Another highlight in Barcelona is Passeig de Gràcia. Passeig de Gràcia is a popular street, famed for being lined with luxurious stores and housing two of Gaudí’s most famous works – Casa Milà and Casa Batlló.

This is considered one of the most beautiful parts of Barcelona.

Is Barcelona Cheap or Expensive?

Compared to other Spanish cities, Barcelona is expensive to visit. However, compared to other cities in Western Europe such as Paris and London, it isn’t as expensive.

You can decrease the cost of your Barcelona visit by eating at restaurants which aren’t in the most tourist parts of the city.

You can also cut costs by purchasing tours that combine multiple attractions as typically paying for single attractions is more expensive.

Shore Excursions in Barcelona Final Thoughts

Barcelona is a lively and colorful city which is teeming with exciting things to see and do. With its rich history, fantastic architecture, and incredible food scene, there really is something for everyone in Barcelona.

Due to the plethora of sights that you can enjoy in Barcelona, I’d recommend booking a shore excursion which combines some of the main attractions in order to make the most of your day in this incredible city.

Barcelona is a city that is steeped in history and oozing with unique character. 15 Best Hotels in Barcelona

These are the best hotels in Barcelona for every type of traveler.

best tours barcelona

Marriott Hotels and Resorts

Barcelona is a city worth returning to again and again. The city's bars, restaurants, and hotels are constantly evolving, along with the famed Sagrada Familia, the Antoni Gaudí-designed church that's been under construction for 140 years.

When it comes to hotels, Barcelona does luxury well. It offers several grand hotels with hundreds of rooms and multiple restaurants, as well as romantic accommodations in quiet neighborhoods. The best part? They almost always have a rooftop terrace.

I’ve lived in Barcelona for two years as a travel writer, exploring the scene (and sipping many rooftop cocktails) — this list of the best hotels in Barcelona is based on my knowledge, along with Travel + Leisure accolades. Fabulous views and stylish rooms await.

Cotton House, Autograph Collection

Cotton House Hotel

Also available to book at Booking.com

Authentic neoclassical details, like parquet flooring and a marble staircase, set the tone for this impeccably designed hotel.

This five-star hotel is in a touristy area of town, convenient for shopping and sightseeing.

Cotton House's beating heart is its architecture, which reflects the neoclassical design many people visit Barcelona to experience. Located in the 19th-century headquarters of the city’s Cotton Guild, the hotel (a T+L reader favorite ) was refurbished and transformed into a modern boutique hotel in 2015, conserving many of the original buildings' most charming elements, like a midcentury spiral staircase.

Modern amenities like a small gym and in-room Nespresso machines complement unique common areas like the Library and L’Atelier. The rooftop pool is a refreshing respite on humid summer days and boasts an incredible view of the Sagrada Familia. The complimentary breakfast is splendid.

The Details

  • Standout Amenities : Rooftop pool
  • Neighborhood: Eixample
  • Distance from El Prat Airport: 22 miles
  • Starting Rate: $297 per night

Majestic Hotel and Spa

Majestic Hotel & Spa Barcelona

Also available to book at Expedia.com

This luxe oasis is set like a gem on one of the city’s most fabulous streets, Passeig de Gràcia, which is lined with high-end boutiques and celebrated architecture.

The design is traditional and elegant, and constant renovation keeps this grand hotel, which has been in operation for over a century, at the top of the class.

In the heart of the city, find high-quality accommodations and a particularly fashionable crowd. The comfortable rooms come with top-to-bottom marble bathrooms. The hotel — another reader favorite that gained a spot on the T+L 500 list — also boasts the largest suite in the city, The Royal Suite Penthouse , which has a private terrace with an in-laid hot tub.

The landmark hotel is a popular meeting place with celebrated restaurants like Restaurant SOLC, famed for their luxurious Sunday brunches, and La Dolce Vitae, set on a fantastic rooftop. The latter even has a resident DJ who brings the beats tableside in the summer.

  • Standout Amenities : Spa with hydrotherapy circuit
  • Distance from El Prat Airport: 10 miles
  • Starting Rate: $280 per night

Mandarin Oriental Barcelona

Mandarin Oriental, Barcelona

Corian bathrooms and contemporary design in each room provide a slick and comfortable respite in the city's center.

When staying in one of Barcelona’s most prestigious hotels, be prepared for equally high-end prices.

The five-star Mandarin Oriental doesn't disappoint; a stay here is as stylish as the window displays on Passeig de Gràcia. It's worth splurging on a room with a balcony view, a suite with a terrace and a hot tub, or maybe even the penthouse, which is the whole top floor. The hotel’s rooftop terrace is buzzy and has excellent views; prominent Catalan chef Carme Ruscalleda helms Moments . This hotel is another T+L reader favorite, listed in our top 500 hotels in 2023 .

  • Standout Amenities : Acclaimed restaurant, Moments
  • Starting Rate: $598 per night

Hotel Arts Barcelona

The hotel's beachside location, inside one of Barcelona’s skyline-making towers, gives you panoramic views of the Mediterranean horizon.

In exchange for easy beach access, you have to travel a bit to get to the city’s prominent landmarks, but you are also at a good halfway point between the center and the Poblenou neighborhood.

Hotel Arts debuted on the Barcelona seafront during the 1994 Olympic Games as a 44-floor skyscraper designed by American architect Bruce Graham. Mirroring the glass-and-steel exterior, the interiors are defined by crisp design and large windows with unobstructed views. (The penthouse suites have the most spectacular views.) Amenities include a pillow menu and luxury bathroom products.

It’s also a top dining destination thanks to Enoteca Paco Pérez , which holds two Michelin stars and pairs the Catalan coast's fresh flavors with wine sourced from the hotel’s 700-bottle cellar. Additional amenities include a rooftop garden that will give you a new angle on Frank Gehry’s famous golden fish sculpture and a spa on the 43rd floor with open-air terraces for lounging in the clouds.

  • Standout Amenities : A garden terrace
  • Neighborhood: Marina
  • Distance from El Prat Airport: 11 miles
  • Starting Rate: $294 per night

The in-house coffee shop is popular with locals and sources beans from a favorite Barcelona-based roaster.

The most basic room class, Passage Mini, is designed for solo travelers and is relatively small.

Casa Bonay is a pleasingly hip hotel. The in-house coffee shop Tostao sources its beans from Nomad, a renowned local roaster. Each room features geometric tile flooring and blankets from Teixidors, and common spaces like the lobby and the Libertine cocktail bar are lively and colorful. There is a rooftop restaurant where you can enjoy a nice lunch in the sunshine, or if you prefer something more private, there's a guest-only space with sunbeds and outdoor showers.

  • Standout Amenities : Guest-only rooftop
  • Starting Rate: $186 per night

The Gothic Quarter is romantic, and this hotel expertly balances the neighborhood's history with contemporary design.

If you want to escape into the narrow corridors of the Gothic Quarter, this is the hotel for you, but remember that a taxi will not get you to the front door.

This Relais & Chateau hotel is located in the heart of Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter and is named for the charming and historic square adjacent to it. The building comprises two mansions — one of which dates back to the 12th century — joined together in the 18th century. The rooms embrace vibrant colors, and some windows open onto the plaza below. With just 22 rooms, service is highly personalized, and you're made to feel at home. There is an al fresco restaurant where you can enjoy meals in the hotel’s namesake square and a secluded urban terrace with a small plunge pool.

  • Standout Amenities : Terrace
  • Neighborhood: Gothic Quarter
  • Distance from El Prat Airport: 10.5 miles
  • Starting Rates: $390 per night

W Barcelona

The most recognizable building on the Barcelona seafront, the W is both a hotel and a significant landmark.

It’s close to the marina and steps from the beach, but the location feels out of the way if you want to sightsee or rendezvous with friends in the city center.

Known by locals as “La Vela,” or the sail, so named for its boat-shaped silhouette, the W stands out on the Barcelona shoreline with no other buildings around to obstruct the view of the city and the sea.

Each of its 473 rooms promises panoramic sea views, and the hotel offers a variety of dining options, including Peruvian and Japanese cuisine. You can also choose to dine down at the beach club restaurant. There are also two pool areas: the Wet Deck provides the best view over the beach, but the rooftop Sun Deck feels much more secluded.

  • Standout Amenities : Panoramic Mediterranean views, spa
  • Neighborhood: Barceloneta
  • Distance from El Prat Airport: 11.5 miles
  • Starting Rate: $277 per night

Also available to book at Trip Advisor

Located on one of the city’s most historic streets, this 19th-century building was once the headquarters of a tobacco company. The hotel maintains its colonial-era architectural influences.

La Rambla is a convenient location for sightseeing, but you'll need to explore the city further to avoid the crowds and tourist traps.

When you step into the grand lobby of this hotel, you can leave the crowds of La Rambla behind you. The marble archways and pillars allude to the building’s colonial past as the General Philippines Tobacco Company headquarters. Taking up a surprisingly large footprint in one of the busiest parts of the city, Hotel 1898 has three bars and restaurants and a rooftop terrace with a pool.

Spa Siargao is a full-service facility in the building’s former coal bunker. The hydromassage pool is particularly atmospheric, with low ceilings that will remind you of an ancient Roman bath. Rooms are comfortable and traditionally appointed in colonial-inspired decor, but the marble bathrooms stand out.

  • Standout Amenities : Online check-in, spa
  • Neighborhood: Raval
  • Distance from El Prat Airport: 9.5 miles
  • Starting Rate: $148 per night

The Barcelona Edition

The Barcelona, EDITION

This hotel straddles the border of two must-see neighborhoods and offers a sophisticated stay.

This hotel brand prides itself on catering to cosmopolitan guests, so style, plus access to key attractions and nightlife, are the priority here.

One of the newer hotels on the scene, The Edition is situated at the crossroads of two of the historic center’s most scenic neighborhoods: The Gothic Quarter and El Born. The rooms embrace walnut paneling, leather headboards, and parquet floors, providing the perfect antidote to the city cacophony outside — plus, every room has a picture-perfect window seat for cozying up on. Some rooms have the privilege of looking down on the colorful rooftop of the Santa Caterina Market, but you can also appreciate this view from the rooftop terrace, where there is a restaurant and plunge pool. You’ll be right next to many of Barcelona’s top speakeasy bars here, but you can start the night in The Edition’s bespoke cocktail bar, Punch Room.

  • Standout Amenities : Outdoor plunge pool
  • Neighborhood: El Born
  • Distance from El Prat Airport:  10 miles
  • Starting Rate: $286 per night

Hotel Bagués

Hotel Bagués 5

Proving great things come in small packages, this boutique hotel doubles as a museum of Art Noveau jewelry. Unique pieces are displayed throughout the property.

Like any hotel on the Rambla, prepare for crowds outside your door, particularly this one, which is a stone’s throw away from the immensely popular La Boqueria Market.

Part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World collection, this five-star hotel is often called the gem of La Rambla, not only because it is located in the former El Regulador palace but also because it once housed 19th-century jewelry workshops. Rooms are cozy: the smallest Single Room sleeps just one. Additionally, its terrace bar and pool area offer an incredibly close view of the stonework façade of the church across the street.

  • Standout Amenities : Rooftop terrace
  • Starting Rate: $180 per night

Grand Hotel Central

The view of Via Laietana from the rooftop terrace doesn't disappoint. Neither does the infinity-edge corner pool.

This centrally located hotel puts you on the main thoroughfare between El Born and the Gothic Quarter.

Housed in a historic neoclassical building, this mainstay offers traditional elegance and luxury. Room categories range from cozy classic rooms to spacious suites. Streetside rooms provide a view of the city’s ancient Roman walls, but the best view is from the rooftop pool, where you can get a close-up look at Via Laeitana’s rarely noticed façades. There is also a cocktail bar that serves light bites.

After sundown, you’ll have your pick of dining in Barcelona’s historic center outside the hotel. Still, Grand Hotel Central’s restaurant is a great place to try traditional Spanish cuisine, and it's worth a visit to at least peruse their robust wine list.

  • Starting Rate: $315 per night

Ocean Drive Barcelona

The rooms' refined design amplifies their spaciousness. They're incredibly accommodating for remote workers.

This stylish five-star hotel is in the same Eixample neighborhood as Barcelona’s other grand dames but offers a more approachable experience for the business or leisure traveler.

With just under a hundred rooms, this hotel offers personalized touches and significant amenities like a rooftop bar and terrace. But the rooms are the best part. Their natural tones balance the stunning all-white bathrooms, and the comfortable laptop desk is perfect for work-cationers (and travel writers on deadlines).

The windows are also fitted with sliding doors so you can fully soundproof and lightproof your room. Book the Grand Suite for a splurge if you fancy a private terrace and plunge pool. If not, the one at OD Bar nearby will do for a quick dip on hot summer days.

  • Standout Amenities : Work desk in each room
  • Neighborhood: Eixample
  • Starting Rate: $203 per night

Hotel Casa Fuster

The breathtakingly beautiful façade of this modernist hotel will make your arrival feel extra special.

The location allows you to explore more of Gràcia, a charming neighborhood not many tourists try to see.

At the very top of the Passeig de Gràcia, this hotel is ideally situated for travelers who want to explore Eixample's boutiques and high-end restaurants and get a taste of local neighborhood life in Gràcia. You'll know it when you arrive because this hotel makes a grand impression from the outside with its curvaceous and ornamental façade. Initially designed by the modernist architect Lluis Domènech I Montaner in 1908, the hotel continues to stun with an Art Noveau style. Inside, you'll find Aleia, a two-star Michelin restaurant and a jazz club with regular performances. There's also a rooftop bar with a small pool and a great view of the boulevard stretching out towards the sea.

  • Standout Amenities : Live jazz on Thursday nights
  • Neighborhood: Gràcia
  • Starting Rate: $257 per night

Yurbban Passage Hotel & Spa

Yurbban Hotels

This hotel has the most panoramic and uncrowded views of all the rooftop plunge pools in Barcelona.

It's tucked away above El Born's hidden passageways.

On Trafalgar Street, two passageways cut through the buildings to connect you to the rest of El Born. One is the Yurbban Passage, where this luxury boutique hotel lives.

The rooms are comfortable and contemporary, and amenities include a gym and underground spa with a water circuit. There’s an on-site restaurant where an authentic Catalan breakfast is served every morning and the Kitchen Lab, a space you can reserve for meetings or cooking workshops. Make sure you save time to enjoy the terrace pool, from which you can enjoy views of Montjuïc and the Gothic spires of the Barcelona Cathedral.

  • Standout Amenities : Underground spa
  • Distance from El Prat Airport: 7 miles
  • Starting Rate: $195 per night

The Hoxton, Poblenou

The rooftop offers incredible city views from the restaurant and pool.

This hotel is located in Barcelona’s tech district, and although it may be best suited for business travelers, the beach is not too far away.

Although this 240-room hotel is in the center of Barcelona’s most up-and-coming business district, Sagrada Familia and Bogatell Beach are 30-minute walks away. Comfort and space are key here, and even the most basic room class is called “Roomy,” with the option to upgrade to a “Homey” or a “Biggy.”

The hotel's decor is contemporary Mediterranean, but the food is a little more global. The Four Corners restaurant brings in a piece of New York with an American-style pizza shop, and you can enjoy a taste of Mexico from Tope, the rooftop restaurant with one of the city’s best terrace views and pools.

  • Neighborhood: Poblenou
  • Distance from El Prat Airport: 12.5 miles
  • Starting Rate: $165 per night

Know Before You Go

  • Location is everything in Barcelona, so research your hotel’s neighborhood and be prepared to use taxis or public transportation. Many of the main attractions, like the Sagrada Familia and the beach, are quite spread out.
  • You’ll hear it repeatedly when you get there, but listen to it from us, too: Always watch your belongings, especially your phone and wallet. Pickpockets operate in Barcelona with tactical efficiency, so keep your phone tight and your pockets zipped.
  • La Rambla is home to a fine selection of historic hotels, but the restaurant scene is full of tourist traps. Thankfully, you can find authentic gems like L’Antic Forn or more upscale restaurants by walking a few blocks in either direction.

How We Chose These Hotels

Coming up on her second anniversary as an expat living in Barcelona, Jamie Ditaranto has had time to dive deep into her favorite neighborhoods and show many visiting contingents of friends and family around. She can often be caught peeking into hotel lobbies and sneaking up to rooftop terraces for a drink with a view.
