Maharashtra and Gujarat to Swap Tigers and Lions

Gujarat and Maharashtra have agreed to exchange a pair of Mumbai tigers for a pair of Junagadh Asian lions, aiming to diversify their wildlife gene pools. This decision follows discussions between forest ministers Sudhir Mungantiwar and Jagdish Vishwakarma. To proceed, they will seek permission from the Central Zoo Authority. The exchange was initially discussed by Sunil Limaye, Maharashtra's principal chief conservator of forests, and Abhishek Kumar, director of the Sakkarbaug Zoological Garden. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting conservation project.

The dam is beautiful, no doubt, but could have been maintained well for tourists. There is jungle safari and resorts for stays. Best time to experience the serene beauty would be just before or after rainy season. Non-vegetarians must try fish fry there.

Beautiful place for spending Family time. Awesome Food Quality at MTDC resort. Nice Jungle safari around

Nice place for family trips and friends. Also have restaurant where you can have food with good taste and reasonable. Sunsets are popular there, also have meditation centre nearby.

Peaceful place. Full of green view and water, Can spend 1-2 hours here. Better in winter and rainy season only, Need some cleaning and facilities like good water and clean toilets.

Planning a wildlife safari? Visit Nagpur, the gateway to six tiger reserves

Photo of Bee The Musafir

Is wildlife safari on your mind? Want to go for tiger sighting? Nagpur is calling...

Out of the total 50 tiger reserves in India, six are in close proximity of Nagpur city, the geographical centre of India.

Safaris are banned during different dates of monsoons for breeding season and repair works in these tiger reserves. Online booking is available on their respective websites.

Also Read: dampa tiger reserve ,  mrugavani national park

Let’s take a tour to the tiger reserve with the latest tiger count as on July 2017.

1. Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) - 88 tigers – 140 km from Nagpur

The TATR is located in Chandrapur, the neighbouring district of Nagpur. This is one of the best jungle safaris in India. The Nagpur Airport is approx. 140 km from TATR. Chandrapur railway station is 45 km away. Forest department and Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) has provide excellent facilities for safaris and stays. They have local guide-aided Gypsy and mini bus. Accommodation is available close to jungle area.

Besides tigers, there are a number of wildlife animals in the vast tiger reserve. It has a rich with flora and fauna. River Andhari meanders through the forest, which also serves as the lifeline for the existence of the forest and animals.

2. Pench Tiger Reserve (PTR) – 53 tigers – 96 km from Nagpur

Rudyard Kipilings’ “Mowgli and the Jungle Book” is set at PTR. This is one of the most beautiful tiger reserves for its flora and fauna. The PTR is spread across two States – Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. There are three entrances to the PTR – Pouni gate, Turia gate and Sillari gate. The Pench River flows through the forest supporting the life.

Government as well as private resorts are available for overnight stays. One can do morning and evening safari, or both. Online booking can be done at MPT Tourism’s website.

3. Kanha Tiger Reserve (KTR) - 60 tigers – 260 km from Nagpur

Located in Madhya Pradesh, it is the largest National Park in Central India. Apart from a good number of tigers, KTR has a variety of wild animals, plants, trees, birds and aquatic life. It has a mesmerizing biodiversity. Madhya Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (MPTDC) has good accommodation facilities. Bookings for KTR safari can be done at their website.

4. Nagzira-Navegaon Tiger Reserve (NNTR) – 6 tigers – 144 km from Nagpur

Though the tiger population at NNTR is just a half a dozen, the park is beautiful. It was accorded the status of tiger reserve in 2013. This park is a birder’s paradise. NNTR is home to around 60% of bird species of Maharashtra State. The forest offer natural sights with lush green jungle and lakes inside it.

5. Melghat Tiger Reserve (MTR) – 42 tigers – 225 km from Nagpur

The MTR boasts of 42 tigers. It is a must-visit forest for wildlife and nature lovers owing to its location in the mountains, cliffs and ravines. MTR is home to an extensive flora and fauna. It has a fort inside the forest, which is not much visited by tourists. MTR is maintained by Maharashtra Forest Department and MTDC.

Photo of Planning a wildlife safari? Visit Nagpur, the gateway to six tiger reserves 2/2 by Bee The Musafir

6. Bor Tiger Reserve (BTR) – 3 tigers – 74 km from Nagpur

Again, despite low tiger count, this place is also good for wildlife safari. Sighting of tiger is a matter of luck, not of tiger population. On a wildlife safari, one should enjoy the forest, the solace, watch the flora and fauna and capture the beautiful sights in camera.

The Bor Wildlife Sanctuary was accorded the status of Tiger Reserve in 2014.

If you happen to be in or around Nagpur, you should do at least one of the above tiger safaris.

Welcome To Umred Jungle

The Umred-Pauni-Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary, about 50 kilometers from Nagpur and 60 kilometers from Bhandara, is spread across Pauni Tahsil of Bhandara district and Umred, Kuhi, and Bhiwapur Taluka of Nagpur district. The forest along the Wainganga River connects this sanctuary to the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve. There are breeding tigers, herds of Gaur, wild dogs, and unique animals like flying squirrels, pangolins, and honey badgers in the sanctuary.

It is surrounded on the northeast by the Wainganga River and the Gose Khurd Dam, on the south by State Highway 9 and Bhiwapur Town, on the west by Umred, and in the northwest by a narrow 10 km long range of 600–800 m hills. It lies 40 kilometers north of the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, 50 kilometers southwest of Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary, and 60 kilometers from Nagpur, Maharashtra. Pench Tiger Reserve is located 80 kilometers to the northwest.

This stunning sanctuary can be accessed through Kharandla Gate, Pauni Gate, and Gothangaon Gate.

About Umred Jungle

Umred Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary, just 58 kilometers from Nagpur! It spans 180 square kilometers, split between the Nagpur and Bhandara Divisions, divided by the Maru River merging with the Vainganga River near Bhiwapur. The eastern region along the Pauni Nilaj road, covering 150 square kilometers of dense forest, connects to the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve, promoting biodiversity and wildlife conservation.

Our sanctuary is home to a variety of wildlife identified through sightings, track analysis, and interviews with locals. Carnivores like Tigers, Sloth Bears, Leopards, Wild Dogs, Ratels, Indian Foxes, Wolves, Jackals, and Jungle Cats thrive, along with herbivores like Gaurs, Blue Bulls, Sambar Deer, Barking Deer, Wild Boars, and Spotted Deers. Umred Karhandla has seen more tourists lately, attracted by its proximity to Nagpur and frequent tiger sightings. The sanctuary's appeal also lies in its rich plant life, mainly 'Southern Tropical Dry Deciduous Forests.'

The sanctuary features dry teak-bearing forests, with teak making up to 60 percent of the crop composition. Teak associates like Dhaoda, Ain, Achar, Mohuwa, Lendia, Bhirra, Tendu, Semal, Rohan, and Tiwas create a vibrant ecosystem. Teak plantations coexist with natural forest tracts, enhancing biodiversity.
