Bikini Kill Announce Rescheduled 2022 Tour

By Brenna Ehrlich

Brenna Ehrlich

After spiking tour dates in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Bikini Kill announced a rescheduled slate of shows across the U.S. and Europe for 2022.

The tour will launch April 29th, 2022 in Los Angeles and wrap September 17th in Redmond, Washington. Bikini Kill was set to embark on a North American tour last March, but those dates were moved to 2021 when Covid-19 started spreading across the country, then, eventually, delayed again. The 2022 run will also boast added shows in Los Angeles, New York, Austin, El Paso, Tucson, and Seattle.

“We have moved all of our tour dates to 2022 to ensure our fans, our crew, venues’ staff, and the band’s safety,” Bikini Kill said in a statement. “We know many of you have had your shows rescheduled more than once and appreciate your patience and flexibility.” Fans with tickets to canceled dates should contact the venue in question for refund information.

Bikini Kill, who reunited in 2019 for a run of shows, also announced a 25th-anniversary edition of their album Reject All American , with a 500-copy blue vinyl limited-edition available May 7th via Bandcamp .

Bikini Kill’s music was recently featured in the Netflix movie Moxie — directed by and starring Amy Poehler — which tells the tale of an aspiring Riot Grrrl. “I love that kids may get turned onto Bikini Kill and other feminist bands through the movie,” lead singer Kathleen Hanna told Rolling Stone . “Hopefully, some kids will be like ‘This sucks,’ and write their own songs.”

Bikini Kill: Still Kills

Bikini Kill: Still Kills

Bikini Kill w/ Table Sugar Marymoor Park, Redmond, WA 09.17.22

Twenty years and not much has changed. Or has it? While the world might look a bit different, the cultural turmoil that legendary feminist punk band  Bikini Kill   rallied against back in the 90s is still going strong. And so is the band. After reuniting in 2019 — two decades after they called it all off — for a couple of sold out gigs, the band’s massive 2020 reunion tour was cursed by a global pandemic.

So 2022 it was when they finally took to stages across the globe for their long-awaited reappearance on the riot grrrl reunion, which closed out on the lawn at Redmond’s Marymoor Park , just a hop skip and jump away from the band’s origins in Olympia. In attendance were fans of all ages: the original punk kids and their kids alike, plenty of queers, and even some actual kids hanging onto their parentals but having a ball. And y’all, the music still hits. While there are no new tracks to be heard, and no plans for any to come, Bikini Kill still, well, kills, especially when you get to catch the vibe live. If you ever have the chance again, don’t miss it.

Bikini Kill  is a feminist punk band that was based in Olympia, WA and Washington, DC, forming in 1990 and breaking up in 1997. Kathleen Hanna sang, Tobi Vail played drums, Billy Karren (a.k.a. Billy Boredom) played guitar and Kathi Wilcox played bass. Sometimes they switched instruments. Bikini Kill is credited with instigating the Riot Grrrl movement in the early 90's via their political lyrics, zines and confrontational live show.

The band started touring in June 1991. In addition to touring the US several times, they also toured Europe, Australia and Japan. Bikini Kill recorded and released a demo tape, two EP's, two LP's and three singles. Their demo tape was self-released, while their first two records came out as a full length CD/Tape and their singles were posthumously collected on CD.

Bikini Kill believed that if all girls started bands the world would change. They actively encouraged women and girls to start bands as a means of cultural resistance. Bikini Kill was inspired by seeing the  Babes in Toyland  play live and attempted to incite female participation and build feminist community via the punk scene. They used touring as a way to create an underground network between girls who played music, put on shows and made fanzines. This independent media making and informal network created a forum for multiple female voices to be heard.

Bikini Kill reunited in the Spring of 2019 with original members Kathleen, Kathi, and Tobi who were joined live by Erica Dawn Lyle. They sold out multiple shows in Los Angeles, NYC, and London as well as headlining “Riot Fest” in Chicago.

Bikini Kill announce 2024 UK and European tour

The eleven shows will take place in June next year

Bikini Kill

Bikini Kill have announced details of a UK and Europe tour to take place next summer.

  • READ MORE: A brief history of Riot Grrrl – the space-reclaiming 90s punk movement

The riot grrrl pioneers will play a series of eleven shows in June, including a headline set at London’s Roundhouse on June 12. Tickets go on general sale at midday on Friday (November 17).  Visit here to buy them, and check out the full list of dates below.

Earlier this year, the band’s singer Kathleen Hanna announced that her memoir , Rebel Girl: My Life as a Feminist Punk , will be released in May 2024. The book will discuss the emergence of the ’90s feminist punk movement, and detail the life and relationships of the artist.

It will also explore how Hanna became a founder of the riot grrrl movement and went on to inspire the likes of  Kurt Cobain  and  Sonic Youth  with her attitude and work as a musician, as well as her struggle with Lyme disease. Pre-order the book  here .

The band had intended to tour the UK and Europe in 2022, but those plans had to be cancelled due to a band member testing positive for COVID as well as “other circumstances out of our control”. They completed the postponed North American leg of that tour earlier in 2023.

Last year, Bikini Kill’s guitarist  Erica Dawn Lyle and drum tech Vice Cooler announced a benefit compilation  featuring contributions from  The Linda Lindas  and  Kim Gordon . For this, Hanna featured on the album’s first single ‘Mirrorball’.

bikini kill tour 2022 cancelled

Bikini Kill is a feminist punk band that started in Olympia, WA, and later moved to Washington, DC. The band was active from 1990 to 1998. Although they sometimes switched instruments, the primary lineup was Kathleen Hanna on vocals, Tobi Vail on drums, and Kathi Wilcox on bass. Billy Karren joined on guitar after the band had played several shows as a three-piece. Bikini Kill is credited with instigating the Riot Grrrl movement in the early ’90s via their political lyrics, zines and confrontational live shows.

Bikini Kill started touring in June 1991. In addition to touring the US several times, they also toured Europe, Australia and Japan. In The band recorded and released a demo tape, two EPs, two LPs and three singles. With the exception of their demo tape, which was self-released, all their records were released by the Olympia-based record label, Kill Rock Stars. In 2011, the band cut ties with Kill Rock Stars and began rereleasing their albums through their own label, Bikini Kill Records.

Bikini Kill believed that if all girls started bands the world would change. They actively encouraged women and girls to start bands as a means of cultural resistance. Bikini Kill was inspired by seeing Babes in Toyland play live, and attempted to incite female participation and build feminist community via the punk scene. They used touring as a way to create an underground network between girls who played music, put on shows and made fanzines. This informal network created a forum for multiple female voices to be heard.

Kathleen, Kathi, and Tobi (along with guitarist Erica Dawn Lyle) are thrilled to announce they will be regrouping to play shows in NY and LA in spring 2019.

Sweeping Promises

For more than a half century, underground music revolutionaries have taken a whack at the mundane mainstream like a piñata. England punks spat “NO FUTURE” at germ-free adolescents. Ohio new wavers devolutionized mankind with whips. Athens art school students chomped at hero worship. MetroCard-carrying riot grrrls rebirthed the bomp with a gasoline gut. In 2020, Sweeping Promises read our pandemic minds with Hunger for a Way Out. In 2023, they return with a new message: Good Living Is Coming For You. At first glance, this nouveau wave slogan offers hope wrapped around relief. At first listen, we realize this may actually be a warning. Darker still, a threat.

A band famous for their unfussy, monolithic anthems, Sweeping Promises elegantly ravage us again with another future classic. They return as a fist of velvet rose petals roaring inside a compact wrecking ball. Gone is the Boston brutalist ambience of their subterranean concrete laboratory and the revelatory single mic recording technique. In its place, a retired and resplendent nude painting studio in Lawrence, Kansas, bathed in light with high ceilings and hardwood floors. Guided once again by their surrounding architecture, a reverb-rich space remains the defining element at the heart of their highly stylized sound. A watery ghost from the golden age of art-punk now wields sharper knives and more microphones.

If the mood of HFAWO was hungry, GLICFY is RAVENOUS. In 2023, appetite is addressed in new ways: Power struggles are aired in “Eraser,” restraints are broken in “You Shatter,” anguished exclamations sting in “Good Living Is Coming for You.” The taboo subject of aging is (s)heroically dragged out into the open. Every line is delivered with such joyous, soaring layers that each punch lands like a chef’s kiss.

Sweeping Promises are Lira Mondal and Caufield Schnug. A chance meeting in Arkansas led to a decade of playing in an eclectic assortment of projects together. Their relentless practice made perfect. Bass playing Lira is an emotive bolt of thunderous energy with the iconic blast of a girl group rolled into one robust throat. Caufield is an intentional guitar player and drummer. No note or hit is extraneous. Together they are meticulous sound engineers, using space as a key ingredient to their distinct sound. Controlling every aspect of their craft, from the first note they write together, all the way through to the final mastering process, each record is an unspoiled fingerprint unique to their dynamic chemistry.

Written before the pandemic, Hunger for a Way Out was released on Feel It Records in the summer of 2020. These songs drip with the anxious urgency of a commanding live performance yet their gauzy production transports us like the fading memory of a favorite song. This distorted sense of time resonated with thousands of quarantined listeners who turned the album into a life-saving floatation device and most beloved album of the year. This is when Feel It Records (North America) and Sub Pop (everywhere else) joined forces to divide/unite and conquer;

beginning with the 2021 single “Pain Without a Touch” and now carrying through to Good Living Is Coming For You. The pandemic went on to trigger an absurd chain of events for Sweeping Promises. Under financial strain, Mondal and Schnug uprooted their lives. They surrendered their studio in Cambridge to take refuge with family in Texas. They completed over 50 demos between their Austin bathroom and a Marfa abode, but feeling unsatisfied, they sought another fresh start. When a disused church in Ohio proved too difficult to rehab, they ultimately found lasting inspiration in Kansas. With their home and studio all under one roof, life is music and music is life.

Good Living Is Coming For You ultimately reflects being thrust into a severely unpredictable world. A capsized boat isn’t entirely bad. In fact, it can be the necessary push toward finding solid ground.

What Happens When a Concert Tour Is Canceled? An Insurance Expert Answers the Million-Dollar Question

An insurance expert answers burning questions about what happens when an artist cancels a tour

  • Amid a slew of concert cancellations, an insurance expert answers questions about what happens to all the money at stake
  • Cancellations due to things out of an artist's control, like medical reasons, are typically covered
  • Insurance will cover typically between 75 and 80% of the guaranteed fee that the promoter was paying the artist

In late May, The Black Keys announced that they’d be pumping the brakes on their upcoming North American tour, and planned to offer fans a more “intimate experience” than the arenas they’d had planned. Then, days later, Jennifer Lopez announced the cancellation of her This Is Me…Live tour , saying she was taking time off to be with her family and friends.

The canceled tour phenomenon is not now; over the last few years, major music players have either canceled shows or rescheduled, from Aerosmith and Madonna to Bruce Springsteen , Heart and the Jonas Brothers .

When a show is canceled, artists and their promoters (including industry titans like Live Nation Entertainment and AEG Presents) will often tell fans that the money they spent on their ticket will automatically be refunded — but what happens to the rest of the money?

According to Paul Bassman, managing director at Higginbotham Insurance, artists and their teams purchase cancellation insurance policies ahead of major tours to protect the artist from financial harm should the tour be canceled.

These policies are generally deemed "all risk" policies, meaning they cover cancellations for just about any reason, other than what is expressly excluded.

“Generally speaking, it’s cancellations that are within your control that are covered,” he explains to PEOPLE. “Personal reasons would not typically be a covered cause of loss, unless that personal reason was the sickness or illness or death of a close family member that was either named on the policy, or included in what’s called a family extension endorsement.”

Medical reasons and family emergencies are typically covered — but canceling a show due to low ticket sales is not. Still, when it comes to concerts, insurance will cover typically between 75 and 80% of the guaranteed fee that the promoter was paying the artist.

“They typically limit the amount that you’re able to cover under their policy so the artist is not putting themselves in a better position than they would’ve been otherwise,” he says. “They ensure a percentage of the guarantees for sickness, illness, death, God forbid, or whatever reason that wouldn’t be excluded under the policy. The insurance proceeds are what pays for the dancers and the production and the buses that you’ve already leased out, and the planes you’ve already rented, or whatever it may be. That all comes out of that pot of money that’s given to you by the insurance carriers.”

But what insurance doesn’t cover doesn’t necessarily come out of the artists’ pocket. Though contracts differ, Live Nation or another promoter would typically be the one to eat some costs — but things vary.

“For the most part, if the show is canceled, then you go your own ways and cover your own expenses,” he says. “There could be a provision in there that says if it’s canceled within 30 days of the show, then you have to cover our expenses. But it’s all just depending on the agreement with the promoter.”

Sometimes, Bassman says, promoters will cut their losses if a show is not selling well, opting to take a kill fee in order to save money in the long run.

“If I had $50 million in guarantees out on an artist and the tour is selling miserably and I could get out of it for $10 to $15 million, yeah, I think that’s a good idea,” he says. “It’s going to be painful, but it’s better than $50 [million].”

Bassman, who says a “huge part” of his business is festival cancellation insurance, says in his personal experience, he’s seen cancellations with losses of “tens of millions” of dollars. He cites blues musician Joe Bonamassa as another example. Bonamassa’s tour was canceled because of COVID, and because the exclusion for “communicable disease” had been removed from his contract, he received $4.4 million in insurance money from the canceled tour, a sum based on what his estimated revenue was going to be.

Though it may be a pain for a venue to deal with a last-minute cancellation, it’s not always the end of the world. Sometimes the venue and the promoter agree to a partnership, where they’ll each take the loss and the gain equally, and other times, they’ll simply rent the space for a flat, non-refundable fee.

Related: Heart Cancels European Tour as Ann Wilson Must Have 'Time-Sensitive but Routine Medical Procedure'

“[Sometimes] the venue’s like, ‘You’re paying us $100,000, $200,000 or whatever the rental fee is, you’re paying us this much no matter what, non-refundable.’ [Upon cancellation] the venue might just be like, ‘Eh, we’re dark tonight. Big deal. We got paid,’” says Bassman.

Still, the venue would lose ancillaries, like parking and concessions. A Wall Street Journal report from October estimated that a sudden cancellation could cost an arena an estimated $500,000 in revenue, while a canceled stadium show could cost $1 million or more.

As for how it’s decided where an artist will play on tour, whether it be small theaters or larger arenas, that’s a collaboration between the artist’s manager, booking agent and promoter.

“They collectively decide what size room they’re going to play, what the ticket price is going to be, and where it’s going to play and all that,” he says. “It’s like throwing a dart — sometimes you get it right, sometimes you get it wrong.”

Will Smith Says He 'Sold Everything in Philly' After Not Paying Taxes for Two Years: ‘I Was Broke, Broke'

The actor stars alongside Martin Lawrence in 'Bad Boys: Ride or Die,' which is currently in theaters.

Will Smith  once "sold everything" he owned in his hometown of  Philadelphia  after the  IRS  discovered the actor had not pay federal taxes for two years.

Smith recently told The Kid Mero and Carmelo Anthony on their 7PM in Brooklyn podcast about a moment in the late1980s when the high of winning his first Grammy for Best Rap Performance with "Parents Just Don’t Understand" was met with a low in the form of a notice from the IRS.

"The moment I decided, I think it was ’88 and we had won a Grammy, but I had neglected to pay my taxes," Smith recalled at the 15:09 mark in the video linked above. "I was, like, the IRS gets money from everybody, they don’t need mine – but they felt differently. So I didn't pay taxes for two years and winning a Grammy and all that…so they just thought they should take my stuff. So I was a little down and I went out to L.A., I sold everything in Philly. I was broke, broke.”

The 55-year-old actor previously opened up about his run-in with the IRS in a 2018 YouTube video. Smith revealed the unpaid taxes were the final blow after he was frivolously spending money on items, such as motorcycles, cars, and designer clothing, following the success of "Parents Just Don't Understand."

Reality set in soon after.

"We released our next album and it was, like, a flop. It was a tragedy, it went, like, double plastic," he said in the video below. "I had spent most of my money, like, I spent all my money and I didn't forget, but I didn't pay the IRS. In my mind, I wasn't trying to like, avoid taxes, I was just like, Ah, damn, they need they money."

"The IRS took all that stuff," he continued. "So, I was like, broke, broke, broke."

Smith did not stay down for long. He met someone at The Arsenio Hall Show named Benny Medina, whom he refers to as "the real-life Fresh Prince of Bel-Air ." Medina later became popularly known as Jennifer Lopez 's manager.

Medina pitched his idea for a show that would become The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air to Smith. He also suggested that Will meet with another one of the show's producers, Quincy Jones. In December 1989, Smith wound up auditioning for Jones in his living room in front of guests, with little time to prepare. The success of that audition led to him landing the role of Will in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air that night.

Smith's appearance on 7PM in Brooklyn took place as part of a press tour for Bad Boys: Ride or Die , currently in theaters, which features the actor alongside his longtime co-star Martin Lawrence .

Valerie Bertinelli and her boyfriend Mike Goodnough are now red carpet official.

The couple walked the carpet at the 2024 Daytime Emmys, where Bertinelli, 63, was up for outstanding culinary host for her former Food Network series, “Valerie’s Home Cooking,” Friday evening.

She stunned in a white blazer and flared trousers set and accessorized with gold jewelry and a matching clutch.

Goodnough stood proudly by her side in a black suit with a matching button-down layered under his blazer. He paired the all-black ensemble with white and black sneakers.

The pair appeared to be smitten as they posed together, sometimes holding hands and gazing into each other’s eyes.

“There’s very little better than seeing somebody you love get the recognition, get the roses,” he gushed to People on the red carpet outside the Westin Bonaventure Los Angeles.

In addition to a hosting nod, Bertinelli’s show, which was cancelled in 2023 after 14 seasons, was also nominated for outstanding culinary series.

Goodnough, a writer who became acquainted with the celebrity chef a few years ago by direct messaging her on Instagram , explained how excited he was to support her at the Emmys in an Instagram video he shared Thursday.

“Tomorrow and Saturday, I get to be Valerie’s ‘and guest’ at the awards ceremony… and I’m going to be the happiest ‘+1’ in the place,” he captioned the clip.

“The nominations are such a deserved honor. Winning would just be icing on the cake,” he continued. “Regardless, I’m just so happy for Valerie… and so happy I get to be her.”

Goodnough shared a similar sentiment when he wrote about their relationship on his Substack site in April.

“I am Valerie Bertinelli’s boyfriend… and that may well be among the most surreal sentences I’ve ever pecked out,” he humbly penned. “But it’s true… and nothing about our actual relationship seems surreal. It just seems… good… lucky… a gift.”

By that time, Bertinelli had confirmed she was “in love.”

She also gushed that she was “incredibly grateful” for her new boyfriend while speaking to USA Today in March.

“It’s unlike any relationship that I’ve ever experienced with a man,” she added. “I don’t want to say too much, but I feel incredibly blessed and lucky to have met him because I wasn’t expecting it.”

She  was also famously married  to  rock legend Eddie Van Halen  from 1981 to 2007.

Jennifer Lopez Cancels Summer Tour

The singer and actress said she was “heartsick and devastated” about the decision, which comes on the heels of a hit Netflix movie and persistent rumors about her marriage.

Jennifer Lopez stands in a white, sleeveless dress and looks to her right.

By Maya Salam

Jennifer Lopez announced on Friday that she has canceled her “This Is Me … Live” summer tour. In a message on her website she said she was “heartsick and devastated” about the decision.

“Please know that I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t feel that it was absolutely necessary,” she continued, promising her fans that they’d be “together again.”

An accompanying statement from Live Nation, which owns Ticketmaster, said that “Jennifer is taking time off to be with her children, family and close friends,” and that tickets bought through Ticketmaster would be refunded automatically.

The tour, scheduled for arenas across the country, appeared to be struggling with ticket sales; earlier this year, a handful of dates had been canceled and several shows appeared to have a number of unsold seats, Variety reported in March.

The cancellation comes during a time when Lopez, 54, has been in the spotlight for both her work and her personal life. She currently stars in the sci-fi action thriller “Atlas,” which has been the No. 1 film on Netflix in the United States since its debut last week.

And in February, she released an expansive, ambitious project, which she had poured $20 million of her own money into. It included a studio album, “ This Is Me … Now ”; an accompanying musical film, “ This Is Me … Now: A Love Story ”; and a making-of documentary, “The Greatest Love Story Never Told,” which stars her husband, the actor and director Ben Affleck, 51. The pair also appeared together in an ad for Dunkin’ Donuts that debuted during this year’s Super Bowl.

Despite the recent collaborations, rumors have been swirling for weeks that their marriage is in trouble , with tabloids offering reports almost daily on the state of their union. Lopez and Affleck were famously minted as “Bennifer” when they dated from about 2002 to 2004, a period that included a brief engagement. They reunited in 2021 and married in July 2022.

A representative for Lopez did not immediately respond on Friday to questions about the tour cancellation or the reports about her marriage to Affleck.
