5 Reasons Wild Africa Trek is Worth the Price

Wild Africa Trek Sign

Wild Africa Trek is a premium tour at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. This 3-hour tour allows guests to view animals on the safari like never before. Guests must be over the age of 8 and at least 48 inches tall. Children under 18 years of age need to be accompanied by a paying adult. Guests need to be ambulatory and are required to be between 45 and 300 pounds while wearing the provided gear. Additional requirements will be detailed at the time of booking. The price varies depending on the time of day, with afternoon treks being cheaper and the time of year. The experience is priced anywhere from $219-$229, depending on the date of your visit. This is an expensive experience, as the price does not include your admission ticket and park admission will need to be purchased separately. However, there are many great reasons why this experience is worth the extra cost. Here are five reasons that the Wild Africa Trek is worth the price.

5 – Photos are included

Wild Africa Trek participants receive digital access to high-quality photos taken of the Trek. These photos will include individual and group photos as well as photos of the many different animals seen on the encounter. This is a huge value for guests participating in the experience as personal cameras and cellphones are not permitted unless they can be fastened to the gear due to safety reasons. Guests will still be able to have those great photographs without the risk of losing their personal camera or phone.

4 – Gourmet Snacks

This tour includes a sampling of African-inspired snacks. Check out a list of items you may be able to enjoy below.

Sample Menu

  • Garlic and leek hummus and pita
  • Prosciutto and mozzarella
  • Fresh fruit
  • Chicken wrap
  • Marinated tandoori shrimp

Please note: Menu items are subject to change without notice.

3 – Knowledgeable and passionate guides

Wild Africa Trek guides are highly trained and love to share their passion for animals, education, and conservation with the guests. These guides love their jobs and love sharing this amazing experience with their guests. Feel free to ask your guide anything about the animals you encounter, questions about food and veterinary care, and the samplings of food you enjoy. These guides know it all!

2 – Private Safari truck

Guests will also have the opportunity to board an exclusive safari vehicle during the trek; this vehicle is permitted to make stops throughout the Harambe Wildlife Reserve, while the attraction vehicles are not. When the truck is stopped guests are permitted to stand and move around the truck for better views and photographs. Because each trek has a maximum of 12 guests, there is plenty of space on this truck. This allows guests to get magnificent views of many different areas of the attraction as their trek guides provide information on the animals and their habitats.

1 – Unique and up-close animal encounters

Wild Africa Trek gives guests the opportunity to explore the Harambe Wildlife Reserve in ways that cannot be experienced by the Kilimanjaro Safari attraction. This premium experience allows guests an up-close and personal view of Hippos and Nile Crocodiles. If you have been on Kilimanjaro Safaris, you may have seen rope bridges or witnessed guests crossing these bridges. Guests on the Wild Africa Trek will get to these cross-rope bridges while wearing harnesses and get a closer look into the habitats of these animals. You will look down into the Hippo and Nile crocodile pools. You’ll also get a chance to see other animals up close on the safari.

Like many of the tours offered at Walt Disney World, the price of Wild Africa Trek is often a deciding factor for guests who are thinking about booking. This is one of the best premium experiences on property and provides guests with a fantastic experience and memories to last a lifetime. What really makes this tour worth the cost is the up-close encounters with the animals, the knowledgeable guides, the African-inspired snacks, and the hundreds of photos included with the price of the tour.  If you have the opportunity, this tour is worth the extra cost!

Wild Africa Trek at Disney's Animal Kingdom

By:  Bekah Beliveau , a Marvelous Mouse Travels agent

When the news broke that Disney's tour experiences would be returning in February this year, I know I wasn't the only one rejoicing! The news couldn't have come at a more perfect time personally. I was headed to Disney World for a late February/early March girls' trip with my sister. We were so excited to add the Wild Africa Trek to our itinerary for our first time.

3-Hour Tour (oh my!):

This is where you can enter your 3-hour tour, Gilligan's Island joke. One of our guides, Jason, appreciated my nod to the classics but said that marketing wise, a 2-hour & 59-minute tour just doesn't have the same ring. Ha!! But I digress, back to our 3-hour tour. This tour definitely takes up a good portion of your day. Now that being said, would I recommend it for a first-time guest? No, I actually wouldn't. There's so much to do, see and enjoy in Animal Kingdom between the rides, animal trails, shows and delicious food. However, if this isn't your first visit and you are looking for something new to try, I couldn't recommend the Wild Africa Trek more!

wild africa trek 2022

They ask that you check in 15 minutes before your scheduled time. You will find the Check-In kiosk right across from the Kilimanjaro Safari entrance in Africa. The cast members and guides will get you checked in, help you get all your personal items stowed in a complimentary locker and get you fitted in your trek gear. They will deck you out with a harness, vest, a name tag, earpiece and even a water bottle that is yours to take home. We got introduced to our guides, took a few group photos (a small group of 12 total), and even learned a few words in Swahili; including Jambo (a greeting similar to Hello in English) and Asante Sana (Thank you).

wild africa trek 2022

We headed first to see and learn more about Animal Kingdom's resident Hippo males, Hans and his father, Henry. We got to see them up-close and personal, watch them get some lettuce snacks and learn all about their dental health. The awesome part of this tour is also the time that our guides and the animal keepers take in sharing all the info about the animals and answering any questions the group has.

wild africa trek 2022

Next up, we headed across 2 rope bridges and headed to see the crocodiles. In fact, you get to walk right over the crocodiles. You also cross over a road the Kilimanjaro Safari vehicles use. Definitely take a few moments to stop and enjoy the views from up there. Very cool!! Note: it's not a good idea to look around or down while walking...you might miss a step. You'll just have to trust me on that one

wild africa trek 2022

From there we were off to the savanna! What differs this portion from the Kilimanjaro Safari ride is the vehicle. The bench seating wraps all the way around the edge of the back of the truck; ensuring everyone has an awesome view. They also pull over and stop periodically to answer questions or discuss the various animals more in depth.

wild africa trek 2022

We were lucky enough to also see the two male baby rhinos: Ranger & Mylo. The newest; baby female rhino, Logan, is still backstage with her mom, Lola. How cute are they?!

Snack Time:

wild africa trek 2022

In the middle of our savanna tour, we also stopped at a Boma (an open-air private pavilion) for our African inspired snacks. Every item is prepared specifically for the Wild Africa Trek- which means you won't find the items anywhere else in the parks. And man, were they delicious!! Like always with Disney, they make allowances for dietary restrictions. I had a gluten-free tin filled with safe snacks and another member of our group had a vegan tin.  Make sure you note any dietary restrictions with your travel agent or when you book the tour.  Also, if you've never had it; try the Jungle Juice. If you have had it, I'm sure you will be happy to hear it's included!!  It's the best! Jungle Juice is also known as POG juice at the Polynesian Resort and 'Ohana Restaurant. It quickly became a favorite of mine! YUM!

wild africa trek 2022

  Also Included in This Tour:

Complimentary Photo Service- Your guides are not only walking and talking animal encyclopedias, but also trained photographers. They are both taking pictures of not only you and your party but also the animals. At the end of your tour, you will receive access to download all the photos. No extra purchase necessary!! You can also enjoy the moment and still have it beautifully documented. This doesn't mean you can't bring your cellphone and take your own photos/video footage.

wild africa trek 2022

Important Things to Note:

  • Theme Park admission isn't included with the price of the trek. You must have valid park admission tickets and at this time a Park Reservation for Animal Kingdom.
  • Keep in mind the physical aspects of the tour. For example, the rope bridges. If a fear of heights is a worry, this may not be the tour for you. However, you are expertly hooked into a harness. There's also protective netting under the steps. At no point of the tour, did I feel unsafe. It's also recommended that you can physically handle the walking paths and hike up short hills.
  • You must wear closed-toe shoes and shorts/pants. Opened toe shoes or/and dresses are not permitted. You don't want to be turned away due to your clothing.

wild africa trek 2022

Pricing details:

The price is currently $199.00 per person (tax not included) and you must be 8 years old or older to participate.

**This is just ONE of the tour experiences offered at Animal Kingdom. Reach out to an agent to discuss adding this VIP Expedition or one of the other animal tours. We can assist you in planning your trip and finding the perfect fit for your family!

Thank you to our guides, Jason and Josh- you both were fantastic! And a BIG thank you to Disney for offering these opportunities to their guests so that we can continue learning about wildlife, and animal conservation.

Have you done Animal Kingdom's Wild Africa Trek? I’d enjoy hearing if you loved it as much as I did. Asante Sana for reading!

Wild Africa Trek at Disney World: A Complete Guide

If you’ve been following along for a while, you know that we give date cards to each of our children every year . In our large family, this is a special time when each parent spends one on one time with each of our five children. My oldest son is a HUGE Disney fan, so our dates always include Walt Disney World. This year, it’s been hitting me hard that he’s in high school. So we are trying to check off some of our bigger bucket list items before he leaves home. So this year, we went big! We booked the Wild Africa Trek at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park!

Wild Africa Trek entrance

What is the Wild Africa Trek?

This is a special, separately ticketed event that is available at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. It has been available for about 9 years. The cost varies from $189-$249 per person. There are discounts available, such as annual passholder discounts. In this 3 hour tour, you have the chance to go behind the scenes at the Kilimanjaro Safari. And here’s a fun fact for you that I learned on the tour!

wild africa trek 2022

Did you know that the Kilimanjaro Safaris and the Gorilla Trek are 110 acres ? But Magic Kingdom is just 96! That means that all of Magic Kingdom could fit inside the safari!

backstage at Disney

In this VIP experience, you will have anywhere from your own private tour of 1, to a group as large as 12. You’ll also have two amazing tour guides. You will be attached to gear and “trek” across rope bridges and more. And you will also have a private truck tour. Also, you’ll have a heavy “snack” during your tour, overlooking the beautiful savannah. But more on the food later! Professional photography services for the duration of the tour are included. And all of these digital photos are included in the price of the tour. You also get some fun souvenirs to take home as well!

Wild Africa Trek truck

What animals will I see?

A better question might be what animals WON’T you see! If you’ve ever been on the Kilimanjaro Safari ride at Animal Kingdom, then you know what animals to expect. If you haven’t experienced that attraction, then some of the animals you will see are lions, elephants, gazelle, giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, flamingos, rhinos, hippos, and so many more.

Wild Africa Trek giraffes

During the Wild Africa Trek, you experience all of these same animals, but more close up. For example at the hippo habitat, you are tethered to a cable and are able to look out over the hippos. During our tour, we were also able to watch a keeper feed the animals as well. This was such an amazing experience and we learned so many fascinating facts about these creatures!

Wild Africa Trek

We also came up close to crocodiles! There are two rope bridges that cross the crocodile habitat. And on the Wild Africa Trek, you get go across them! This is the most thrilling part of the tour. And it was more exhilarating than I thought it would be! You definitely feel safe the whole time, but it’s also pretty wild to look down and see 20 crocodiles below your feet. After you cross the bridges, you interact with the crocodiles in a similar way as the hippos, and learn lots of amazing facts about these creatures.

Wild Africa Trek rope bridge

Are these animals well cared for?

All throughout the tour, there was a strong emphasis on conservation. We learned how Disney is helping these animals both in the safari, and also in the wild. Disney’s Animal Kingdom is actually officially classified as a zoo, and is governed by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). Because of this, the AZA determines a lot of how the animals will breed, and need to be transferred to or from different facilities across the country. This is done to preserve the species numbers in the wild. Also, animal nutritionists dictate exactly what each and every animal will eat, down to the exact ounce. These animals are treated like royalty, with the best possible care that is available in the world.

And did you know that when you donate to the Disney Conservation Fund at any of the gift shops, Disney matches your donation by 100%? And at the end of the Wild Africa Trek, you have the opportunity to use a river rock to donate your portion of your donation to the animal of your choice. This was such a meaningful part of the tour. And it really sent home how much help you can give to these animals through the Disney Conservation Fund.

What’s the food like on the Wild Africa Trek?

After reading the description on the Walt Disney World website for the Wild Africa Trek, I wasn’t entirely sure what the snack or meal would be like on the tour. It sounded more like a snack, but for my son and me, it was more like a meal! Our tour was at 11:45 am, so our meal on the savannah was about an hour and a half after that time. For the afternoon offerings, it includes:

  • Chicken curry salad
  • Sun-dried tomato hummus and mini pita
  • Marinated tandoori shrimp
  • Smoked salmon roulade with dill
  • Air-dried beef and prosciutto
  • Fresh fruit marinated in mint and ginger

Wild Africa Trek food

I requested vegetarian options, so my selections also included a grain salad, a bean salad, and ginger beets. I was so pleased that the vegetarian selections weren’t just repeats of other items, but unique and specially made additions. Other guests on our tour had several food allergies, and all of these were accommodated as well.

Wild Africa Trek vegetarian options

The food was absolutely amazing! It was some of the best food I’ve ever had on Disney property. And it’s not available anywhere else! Chefs specially prepare the food just for the guests of the Wild Africa Trek. And it would be worth going back just to eat this gourmet food again!

Is it suitable for kids? What about the elderly?

When I read reviews of this tour, I saw several questions about whether it was suitable for older people or for children. In my opinion, as long as a person can walk comfortably, as well as climb stairs, they can embark on the Wild Africa Trek. This the is the description from the Walt Disney World website:

  • WARNING: For your safety, you should be in good health and free from high blood pressure; heart, back or neck problems; motion sickness or other conditions that could be aggravated by this adventure. Expectant mothers should not participate.
  • Guests under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a participating adult (18 years of age or older).
  • Participants must be 8 years of age or older and at least 48 inches (122 cm) tall.
  • Participants must be between 45 and 300 lbs. with the harness gear on. The safety harnesses used for this experience may prohibit Guests of certain body shapes or sizes from participating.
  • You must have physical stamina, comfort with heights, and the surefootedness to negotiate small hills, foliage and unsteady rope bridges on this tour. Guests seeking a less strenuous or wheelchair-accessible trek should contact Wild Africa Trek operations at (407) WDW-TOUR or (407) 938-1373 for alternative programs.

Wild Africa Trek

I was somewhat surprised that the minimum age was 8 years old. I think it might be a little much for some 8 year olds, but that totally depends on the individual. As long as your 8 year old is comfortable walking over a high rope bridge alone, they would love this tour!

Wild Africa Trek

What should I wear? Can I bring my phone?

You should definitely wear comfortable clothes that are easy to move in. Flip flops are not allowed, and dresses or skirts are highly discouraged. You can bring your phone or a camera, and personal photos are allowed on all parts of the tour. A locker is provided for all other personal belongings and are nothing in your pockets is allowed on the tour. A water bottle is provided and will be strapped to your gear. From the Walt Disney World website:

  • Recommended attire includes shorts or pants and a comfortable shirt. Closed-toe shoes with a back strap or hiking boots are required. No flip-flops will be allowed. Skirts or dresses are not recommended.
  • Complimentary lockers for your belongings will be provided. You will also receive a safety vest and wireless headset so that you can hear your guide at all times. Cameras are allowed as long as they can be securely fastened to the vest.
  • Please arrive on time and allow approximately 10 minutes for the walk from the turnstiles at the front of Disney’s Animal Kingdom park to the Harambe area check-in location.

Wild Africa Trek

Is it worth it?

That is always the question. In my opinion, absolutely yes. As always, the cast members were absolutely incredible. Jason and Paula, our VIP guides, were funny, knowledgable, and anticipated our every need. If you are looking for something special to do during your time at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, this is the tour for you. If you love animals, this is for you. Going backstage at Disney is a thrill for you? Do this tour! If you’re an annual passholder and you’ve been to Disney a thousand times, and you’re looking for something new, this is a great choice.

Wild Africa Trek with teenager

And if you’re looking to make memories with your teenager, this tour is for you. My son and I won’t soon forget walking over a crocodile pit together, or taking selfies with hippos. Make those memories my friends!

{review} Wild Africa Trek Tour at Disney's Animal Kingdom

wild africa trek 2022

One of the things I was most excited for on our recent trip to Disney World was FINALLY doing Wild Africa Trek . The moment I learned what it was it has been on my Disney Bucket List. I almost did it for my 30th birthday in 2018 but my friend and I decided to do character meals instead. Christian and I had booked it for our May 2020 trip that got cancelled. When we rescheduled the trip for the  May 2022 we decided to skip it that trip and plan a special Disney World vacation for our wedding anniversary. Thus, our Animal Kingdom-centric trip was born!

We decided to do it up big and stay at Animal Kingdom Lodge with a Savannah View room, booked through David's Vacation Club Rentals to utilize Disney Vacation Club points to stay for lower than Disney rack rates. We paid $900 for 3 nights compared to $2381 if booked directly through Disney.  We planned our meals just at the hotel and wanted to spend a bulk of our time there. Since we're Annual Passholders (well, were until September 30th) we were able to use our Passhoolder discount on Wild Africa Trek tickets and paid $360.28 vs $423.88.

I'll do my best to walk you through what happens during this amazing three hour tour. If you don't want details so you can be pleasantly surprised on your own Trek feel free to just look at the images. The short description of the tour from Disney is "Encounter exotic wildlife on a guided expedition with African-inspired snacks and photo keepsakes."

wild africa trek 2022

Booking the Trip

You can book your Wild Africa Trek 60 days in advance on the Disney World website. If you're staying at a Disney resort that means 60 days from check-in day. So you could theoretically book a day 67 days early if you're staying at Disney for a week.  About a week before your Trek you'll get an email reminding you of the rules and letting you know you can ask any questions.

After we booked our tour I decided I wanted to make us matching shirts. So I googled some of the Wild Africa Trek signs around the park and kind of combined them to make a design showing off what we were doing and why. (It says Anniversary Trip 2022 on it.) I also added some fun animal motifs because it seemed a little floaty with just the sign. We got so many compliments on the shirts and people kept asking us how we liked the tour during the day, ha ha. (Some before we even went on it so we had to say "we don't know yet! Going in an hour!)

Checking In

We went on the 10:15am tour, meaning we had to be back by Kilimanjaro Safari by 10am, of course we arrived nice and early to make sure we were all checked in and ready to go. The check-in booth is just across from the Safari entrance and you'll be asked to sign a waiver and confirm that you are wearing close-toed shoes and are able to "hike" for an extended period of time. Tours are limited to twelve people per timeslot, we had ten in our group.

Once everyone checked in we headed into the preparation area where we were weighed (you must be between 45 and 300lbs,) put our loose items in a locker and were fitted for vests. The only things you are allowed to take on the trek are hats, sunglasses, cameras with neck straps and your phone - providing it has a case that you can connect a cord to. (& necessary medical supplies)  Christian took my photo camera and left his phone in a locker and I took my phone.

While getting fitted for our vests they attached my phone to a cord that was then attached to my vest so I could then put it into a pocket when I wasn't using it. We were also provided with souvenir water bottles with the Wild Africa Trek logo. These aren't the best, our water got warm pretty quickly, but they're a fun keepsake. We also got earpieces so we could hear our two tour guides Kit and Dom!

Part 1 - Hiking

For the first part of the tour you actually walk a little through Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail on your way to the special Wild Africa Trek trail. Our guides made sure to point out that we were going from nice paved pathways to actual forest floor so we had to watch our step as we transitioned from the show stage to backstage.   We walked single file in our cute matching outfits while our guide chatted about the various animals we were seeing on the trail and passersby were very confused as to who we all were, ha ha. Maybe they asked another cast member and learned about the tour!

We "hiked" up a small hill to an overlook spot where we were clipped on to a support railing with our very large carabiners so we could go as close to the edge as we wanted to watch some hippo training! A hippopotamus expert was there to greet us and give the hippos a nice snack of lettuce and watermelon so we could get a closer look. Such amazing creatures!

After that we had a little more walking through the woods to come to the main attraction - a rope bridge going across the crocodile enclosure. It is two bridges connected together that are seemingly falling apart. But don't worry, there's a net underneath the bridge if you lose your footing AND you're connected to a metal wire above via your harness so there's no real danger. This is one of the spots where folks riding the Safari will see you and say "How the heck did those people get up there, and how can I do it!?"

Unfortunately, they were cleaning the crocodile enclosure so we did not get to see them while walking over the bridge. I imagine there would be a stop similar to the hippos when the crocs are in their habitat. Luckily the hippos were still in the water so we got to see some while making the "dangerous" trek across the "rickety" bridges. The baby, Greta, was also in the water! I didn't even notice until I looked at my photos later. Was concentrating too hard on not falling.

As mentioned before, it is not dangerous at all as you are strapped in your harness and connected to a secure wire above. The broken bridge planks are "Disney real" (Disney doesn't like to say the f word....fake) aka perfectly safe to walk on even though they look broken and unsafe. But still watch your step, you don't want to have to use the backup net! Trek participants go one at a time on the bridges so they are safe AND so your guide can get some great candid (and plandid) shots of you crossing. You are free to stop and take photos, but don't take too long or your tour will be there all day!

After you cross the bridges there is a spot to refill your water bottle and grab a cooling towel. Don't miss out on those towels, they can cost you like $18 in the park and they come with the price of your tour here! Plus they're a nude color so they'll match all your outfits. Just put some water on them, wrap around your neck and you're instantly cooled.

Part 2 - Safari Vehicle Ride 1

After the harrowing experience on the bridges (hah!) you have a small hike to your special Safari vehicle. This one is different from the normal Kilimanjaro Safari ride vehicles because it's open space in the middle and the bench just goes around the edges. You still have to remain seated while driving but your driver will stop a couple times so you can get up and get better views of the animals. We had some amazing views of the giraffes, so much fun! A lot of our time was spent watching Mara the Masai giraffe try to get some leaves from way up in the trees.

We also learned a fun fact that I didn't fully know. In 2019 Mara gave birth to Jabari on the safari. It was the talk of the day in the Annual Passholder Facebook group for those lucky few that actually got to see the birth - once in a lifetime! What I didn't know was this was the only time this has ever happened at Animal Kingdom. Normally a week or so before the giraffe is due they will make sure they are not "on stage" but rather in their barn so the baby has a safer birth with helping hands if needed. They didn't stop the safari while Mara was in labor because she was so used to the trucks it made her nervous when they temporarily stopped rides. After she gave birth the safari was closed for the remainder of the day so she and the calf would be safe. Cool right?

Part 3 - Snacks at the Boma

In the middle of our Safari we took a break at the boma, another spot you can see while on the actual ride. This is where you have your delicious snack, refill your water and go to the bathroom. We got here about 2 hours after the tour started, so make sure you go to the bathroom before your tour starts too. During our break our guides set our tables with table cloths, got us some POG juice and brought over everyone's tiffin carriers with our snacks. POG juice is famous at Disney - it's a blend of passion fruit, orange and guava juices and super tasty!

A couple days before the tour you receive an email with details on your trek and you are asked if there are any allergies or dietary restrictions. I'm a pretty picky eater so I replied to let them know I don't like yogurt or cheese. Disney is great at accommodating for food issues so I had a special tiffin without cheeses or yogurt. I knew that those were 2 items commonly served on the tour so I took a chance that there would be nothing else I didn't want to eat. Luckily the rest of the food was delicious and I had nothing to worry about.

We had tandoori spiced shrimp, fruit salad, chicken/cucumber roulade, sun-dried tomato hummus with pita, dried meats and an assortment of olives (with cheese for everyone else!) We also got a homemade granola bar from the chefs at Tiffins Restaurant that we could take with us or eat right away. Our tiffin included an edible flower you could use as a palate cleanser as well. The menu was specially created by one of Disney's top Chefs and every detail is taken into account. They did a fantastic job with it.

Part 4 - Safari Vehicle Ride 2

After our snack we had a little bit more of the normal Safari to finish up so off we went on to our special Safari truck. After we got to the end of the route we were let out in a different unloading area to the normal safari rides and walked back to the preparation area as a group to return our phone cords and grab our gear from the lockers. We said a sad farewell to our guides and fellow trekkers and headed off to finish our day! The sunglasses cords they gave us were ours to keep. I have some metal ones already, but Christian was very excited to have one of his own so he didn't have to keep track of his sunglasses the rest of the trip.

Our guides also gave us a card with a Photopass code on it so we would be able to download all the photos they took of us (and the journey) on the Disney photo website later. During the trek one of the guides was always taking photos of us or the animals. We also did a few Plandid shots (aka planned candids) during certain activities. All the photos come with the price of your tour so you don't have to pay anything extra to download them. This means if you don't want to take a camera or your phone with you you'll still have memories! But I'm crazy and like to reaaaaally document things so I wanted my phone for videos and photos. I took mostly videos since I knew Christian had my photo camera.

Should you book it?!

I say YES! It was such a fun experience and exciting way to take in the sights of Kilimanjaro Safaris. The hike was fun and we really enjoyed our snacks at the Boma. If you're in a rush to get a ton of things done on your Disney trip, this isn't for you. But if you're looking for something new to do on an extended trip, or special long weekend I say go for it.

Tips to book Wild Africa Trek at Animal Kingdom

My family is going to AK in late June and we want to go on the Wild Africa Trek private tour. The online booking site shows absolutely no availability on any dates. Is there a trick to booking this? Is there a number to call where I might get better results?

It’s 60+10. I was just able to book yesterday with my Leading Reservation so I’m only 69 days out and you should be too far out if you are after 6/19.

Unlike dining, the booking for this opens at midnight on your ADR date. I noticed that the early times were always booked up first, I was able to get the time I wanted right at midnight on our 60+4 day.

And you can use a leading reservation and get 60+10 and then very easily get the time you want.

Agreed. I used a leading reservation to get WAT at 60+10 for our early June trip. Had my choice of times for the day I wanted. By the time I was at 60+6 there was nothing left.

Thanks. I’ll use the 60+10 tip. Is online at midnight the way to go (I assume Eastern Time?) or is there a phone #?

image

So this is not logged in and so I can only see 60 days in advance and it’s booked out already. I would highly recommend booking a leading reservation for 10 days before your actual date you want (if you don’t know what this is, it’s a “fake” reservation somewhere cheap. You just pay for the deposit and then cancel when you get to your actual 60 days and they will refund you that deposit). This way you can book 70 days instead of 60 days. It allows you to get the time you want and in this case to even be able to book it at all.

image

*I will add another option is if you do have a long stay booked already book the WAT for towards the end of the stay so you truly get the 60+10 benefit.

Thanks. I just realized I don’t completely understand how the 60+10 leading reservation strategy works. Is it that you get a 10 day window to make a reservation starting 60 days out from hotel check in? So if I wanted to have the WAT on June 27, I would make a fake hotel reservation for June 17th and then on April 17th I could book WAT on June 27? Can I make it a short reservation, say 2 nights and they will still let me book WAT on June 27 (after I technically check out)? I assume this works for dining reservations also?

or does the ‘fake’ reservation need to include the date I want to book WAT? Why is it +10 vs say + 5 or +15? Thanks for the help

Sorry I see now that you can make up to 10 days of reservations from 60 days out from your check in date. Hence the 60+10. I get it now. Still have the question on whether the leading reservation has to be 10 nights in order to be able to book on that 10th day (if that makes sense).

There is a thread on it: Leading Reservations for dining? - Walt Disney World - TouringPlans Discussion Forums

That explains it with a link to how to do it. But in a nutshell you would book a reservation for 10 days prior to your checkin so yes in this case June 17 but you would book it thru the last day you want to make any Dining or Tour reservations (etc. cabanas is another one). Then each day you are 70 days out from what you want to book you can book it. So if you wanted to Book WAT for June 27 you could book that 70 days prior instead of 60. Because yes the 60+10 is exactly how you described. Once you get to 60 days from your actual checkin date you can cancel the leading reservation and get your deposit back which is equivalent to one night’s stay regardless if it’s for 1 night or 15 nights. So you’re temporarily out the same amount of money either way.

If you do book a Leading Hotel Reservation, you may as well utilize it to book other hard to get dining reservations.

Hypothetical:

  • June 24 (first day of a desired ADR/Tour)
  • June 30 (last day of desired ADR)
  • Book your Leading Reservation date of June 14 (check-in)-June 30 (check-out)
  • April 15 would be the first day to make a reservation (for June 24)
  • Cancel your Leading Reservation after May 1 and all ADR’s/Tours will remain.

Yes, it does…people book for 10 days from their actual check in date to their actual checkout day. Then each morning when you wake up naturally, it’s very easy to get whatever you want exactly 70 days out. Yes, you have to book day by day instead of all at once from your actual 60 days out for up to 10 days beyond your checkin day (or until your checkout day whichever is shorter). BUT you can get what you want with ease. And no need to do it at midnight or 3am if you’re on the west coast for example because everything will be there when you wake up still.

I think they do it to create an on-site benefit that doesn’t cost them any money. Since it is an on-site benefit, it is for the length of your stay. Since Disney hotel rooms are 2X+ the cost of comparables nearby, they used to want you to stay a long time.

There is really no reason to have an ADR window at all. Imagine if people could make them whenever they made their other travel arrangements.

ETA: This is why I don’t have a problem with a leading reservation. On our recent trip it was a split stay, and the only thing we’d have gotten was biergarten.

I assume Swan won’t work for a lead reservation?? I wanted to test it, but while MDE sees it and shows 60+10 on the calendar, it won’t let me book anything.

Swan can work but there are two problems - it is tough to get your ressie linked in MDE and Swalphin is notorious for ulinking in your MDe - so there is extra work and risk.

Thank you for this explanation- I wasn’t 100% understanding how to make a leading reservation work for me, but this is so clear.

Does the leading reservation have to be consecutive to the actual reservation? Meaning, if my actual check in date is 5/3, does my check out date on leading reservation have to be 5/3? Will it still work if my leading reservation check out is 5/2?

Your checkout dates should line up. In other words you’ll have overlapping stays.

Like real reservation 5/10-5/15

Leading 4/30-5/15.

So we are going to WDW 5/14-5/20. I logged on and did all my dining at 60+6 but for WAT it wouldn’t show anything except the first day. So now I just checked thinking all the dates would show up and I would have no trouble booking for two adults and it shows no availability for any of our dates??! Does this really sell out that quickly? Do people cancel? Any tips or suggestions? I will be so bummed if I missed out since we couldn’t do when we were there in the fall.

I agree with previous responder… WAT goes very quickly but keep looking just in case!!

Thanks I’ll have to look into it. Were you able to switch your times?

No, 10:15 never opened. I did see another 8:45 pop up for a short time.

Aela said: We just went this past week. It does sell out fairly quickly. There are only 12 spots in each Trek. I almost never saw any cancelations. There is one “paid” dining notification site that will check for Trek. I had a 8:45 and wanted 10:15. it is likely you missed it Click to expand...

Can confirm watcher works!! I was able to get WAT and KTTK. You have to be on these reservations though. Like phone near your hand when you get the text reminder. Saved password for MDE . Click through the prompts quickly and save payment info. Basically be as prepared as possible.

One FYI for folks looking this up later: The Enchanting Extras (including WAT and KTTK) drop at midnight. So some of them (especially Keys) are often gone before ADRs open at 6am.

OP here…just wanted to report back that I booked WAT this morning from an alert from “watcher”!!! Thanks for the tip!! I had been checking on my own too but with a full time job and all it gets tough lol…

Can someone help with which DAY to be trying to reserve, right at midnight? Is this like dining where you can log in at exactly 60 days from your check-in date and will be able to reserve for any day of the duration of your trip (up to +10)? I just want to be sure I've got this down.... TIA!

KSL said: TYSM! I find the "60+10" adds to the confusion. I always want to take that as "sixty days prior to check-in, plus ten days prior to THAT" (which would effectively be 70 days prior to check-in). Continually need to remind myself that it really means "sixty days prior to check-in date, you can reserve for the length of your trip up to ten days" -- this is right, right!? See, even now I am second-guessing....!!! Click to expand...

One more question: Do I have to already have a park reservation in place at the appropriate park before I book a tour? I'm thinking: what if I'm only able to get a tour on a day that I have a park reservation somewhere else. Will I be able to book the tour and then switch the park reservation? Or do I need to modify the park reservation first to have that park selected in order to book the tour? (it's getting late; I hope this makes sense!). TIA!!
