Feedback from my clients

“We had the privilege of experiencing 10 wonderful days on our safari, encountering many impressive animals in their natural habitat and enjoying the friendliness and hospitality of the people in Botswana. We are very grateful to Ms. Katzer for organizing our trip and taking care of us during both the planning stage and the trip itself. You did a great job. “

“ In preparation for a vacation trip in 2018, we became aware of Wanderlust Africa because of the agency’s unusual name and the very positive feedback from other travellers. Our journey through South Africa, organized by Alexandra (self-drive, two people, 28 days), was terrific and still has an impact today; we have been hooked on Africa. Since then, we’ve never lost contact with Alexandra, and she organized another trip in 2022 – from Northern Namibia to Cape Town (self-drive, two people, 22 days). It was just amazing! Kind and helpful people, unique accommodations and very carefully chosen travel stops. Even if there was a slight problem (we lost our vehicle papers and permission to cross the border to South Africa), Alexandra and her crew were always available immediately. They took care of everything in the background to our complete satisfaction. Thanks again for that. We’ll definitely plan our next trip with Alexandra and Wanderlust Africa.”

“Alexandra put together the trip according to our wishes. We wanted both safari and a bit of relaxation on the beach. She chose very individual accommodations and places that inspired us. Every day was unique – either Alexandra organized a boat tour on Lake Naivasha or a hike on Crescent Island. The atmosphere at the beach hotel was very family-like. Everyone was friendly, and we felt absolutely comfortable. Alexandra organized the whole trip so nicely, and everything was running smoothly. Whenever Alexandra phoned to ask how we were, we only raved about our impressions and experiences. It was such a great experience that we have Alexandra plan our next trip to Africa for sure…”

“We would like to thank you for always friendly and expert advice. Unfortunately, due to Corona, we had to postpone the trip and cancel it. Here, too, you were understanding and always objective. We want to thank you for the professional handling of this situation and can only recommend you for your advice and the great service. If we are planning another trip to Africa, you will be our first point of contact. Thank you again, and stay healthy!”

“We can highly recommend Alexandra Katzer and Wanderlust Africa. In all aspects, from the preparation until you are back home, you enjoy an all-around friendly, extremely competent and professional service in regards to planning, advice, support and guidance. Five stars in all respects, hard to beat!”

“Tanzania and  Africa is breathtakingly beautiful so it’s a once in a lifetime holiday. We specifically enjoyed a fabulous and memorable Tanzania Safari thanks to the detailed and personalized planning of the trip and the perfect execution by Alexandra, Wanderlust Africa and its partner teams. “

“The individual, personal and very competent advice in advance, the consideration of our ideas and wishes left nothing to be desired. The self-drive trip was then meticulously planned and went smoothly. The choice of lodges was terrific. Highly recommended!”

Destination: Namibia; May 2019

“For 2019, we planned to travel to our dream country South Africa again. Since I planned our first trip in 2016 and booked everything, I know how much work is involved. So this time, I left everything to Mrs Katzer. The trip was planned perfectly, my wishes were implemented, and everything went smoothly. We liked the personal contact before and during the trip. Our conclusion: absolutely recommendable.”

Destination: South Africa; April 2019

“The trip to Namibia/Botswana offered by Alexandra Katzer was perfectly planned and structured so that it fully met or exceeded our expectations. Alexandra Katzer listens to her customers very well and then implements their wishes reliably into the trip planning; the selection of the lodges, the planning of the distances, and the ‘good feeling’ conveyed made the trip a wonderful experience. We recommend Alexandra Katzer and will book again with Wanderlust Africa. Many Thanks!”

“I would always plan the next trip with Wanderlust Africa – excellent suggestions for the course of the tour, very nice accommodation, excellent advice and support – makes a holiday an unforgettable experience. The Namibia trip through the Caprivi Strip with Victoria Falls is full of experiences, impressions, wonderful landscapes, and wildlife.”

Martina Koederitz

Destination: Namibia & Botswana & Zimbabwe; February 2019

“A heartfelt thank you to Alexandra Katzer from ‘Wanderlust Africa’, who organized a fantastic, incredibly beautiful, sustainable holiday for us. Individually and suitably selected according to our wishes, always available for any questions. When choosing the very different places with their guesthouses and lodges, we were speechless at one point or another. We fell in love with South Africa on our first visit and will continue to explore. Also, thanks to the open, friendly residents.”

“Dear Alexandra, Thank you for the excellent planning and organization of the trip! The time – especially in the Etosha National Park – was unforgettable. We have now also been infected with the Africa virus.”

“When planning our trip to South Africa, Ms Katzer gave us competent advice. She listened to our requests and created a very nice itinerary for us. We felt well looked after by her at all times before and especially during our tour. Ms Katzer is highly recommended as a specialist for South Africa trips. We thank her for this impressive journey in a remarkable country!”

“We decided to book our vacation in South Africa through Wanderlust because the reviews were excellent. And we were not disappointed. Our four weeks in South Africa were just great. Even the planning was a lot of fun for us because Alexandra Katzer was an excellent contact person who immediately responded to our wishes. The mix of lucrative lodges and bed & breakfast accommodation was great. We felt welcome and expected everywhere. We were pleased about the little surprise in our first accommodation: a great fruit basket, which should give us vitamins and strength for the coming weeks after the long journey. Really nice!!! Although Alexandra was in Germany, we could reach her at any time via WhatsApp, which was just a reassuring feeling. She also called the accommodation regularly and asked if we had arrived safely. She even did online check-ins and passed them on to us at the accommodation. It was great support all around, and we will book our next trip to Africa again through Wanderlust. Many thanks, Alexandra!”

“The three of us had a great round trip in Namibia over 2.5 weeks Sept./Oct. to experience 2018. Alexandra perfectly organized the trip. Thanks to her very personal, extremely friendly and always patient advice, we felt well prepared in advance. Her likeable nature, joy, and passion for this country were contagious, and everything was confirmed as we discussed it. We highly recommend Alexandra to anyone planning a more individual trip to Namibia who would like to realize their unique priorities and needs.”

“A fantastic holiday. Very carefully and lovingly put together. We can only recommend “Wanderlust Africa” to everyone. Anytime gladly again. Thank you, Alexandra.”
“We organized and booked a 2-week trip to Namibia through “Wanderlust Africa”. Everything went perfectly! Mrs A. Katzer responded to our wishes with great sensitivity. Since it was our first trip to Namibia, we were very grateful for the great empathy. During the journey, Mrs K. kept asking if everything was going well if we arrived safely at the lodges, etc., which gave me a good feeling. The route suggested by her and the lodges testified to her excellent knowledge of Namibia! For us, only “Wanderlust Africa” comes into question for future trips to Africa!”

Beatrice & Michael

“Mrs Katzer was always available for us and gave everything to give us a great Namibian experience despite our late booking… thank you very much!”

Family Bender

Destination: Namibia; August 2018

“We are enthusiastic about the planning and detailed advice in all matters. Everything Alexandra chose regarding our Namibia itinerary and accommodation was excellent and exceeded all of our expectations. We always felt well looked after by her and the service staff on site. We can recommend Wanderlust Africa Alexandra Katzer with a clear conscience. We only plan and book our next Africa trip with Wanderlust Africa.”

Edith & Herwig

Destination: Namibia; June 2018

“Super lovely South Africa holiday! At the end of May, we (2 adults and our 13-year-old son) spent two weeks in a rental car in South Africa on the Garden Route from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth. The trip was planned and carried out with Mrs Katzer/Wanderlust Africa. Everything went smoothly; the recommended travel stops, pre-reserved accommodation, and attractions were great. Without further preparation, we could start our trip with a detailed “travel guide” specially created for our itinerary. The accommodation was reserved for all stops, and we had many suggestions for activities or sightseeing on our route, but we were free to do what we wanted to do spontaneously. Just right for us. We were also able to book special sights such as the cable car up Table Mountain or a half-day German city tour (only for the 3 of us) in advance. Mrs Katzer was competent and friendly and always made sure to realize our wishes when planning the trip. She can also be reached personally 24 hours a day via her mobile phone during the entire trip. We were delighted with our South Africa vacation’s planning, advice and implementation. It was a lovely, exciting and varied holiday, but also a very relaxed and restful one thanks to the excellent planning and accessible design. We can recommend Ms Alexandra Katzer/ Wanderlust Africa.”

Destination: South Africa; May 2018

“We decided to book with Wanderlust Africa because the offer, the planning and the advice convinced us. The response to the unique ideas and the planned tour was great. We would always contact Wanderlust Africa for further planning.”

Destination: Namibia; May 2018

Familie Hebeler

“Ms Katzer already implemented our wishes (several changes) quickly and friendly during the planning phase and was always a reliable contact person during the trip if we had a need. This made us feel extraordinarily cared for, and the trip became an unforgettable experience. Our friends, who unfortunately couldn’t make the trip, felt that they were in excellent hands with the help when cancelling their trip and would recommend Ms Katzer at any time. Many Thanks.”

“Hello Alexandra, thanks for the tip about Mozambique; it was the perfect combination of bush and beach vacation. “Wanderlust Africa helped us implement and realize exactly the Africa trip we always dreamed of. From planning and preparation to implementation, everything went to our complete satisfaction. It was great to have Wanderlust Africa – in person, Alexandra Katzer – always at our side, to be there for us at any time with questions and problems and to make our trip as pleasant as possible. We liked the choice of accommodation. The experiences on the safaris and in the safari lodges were unforgettable. They significantly exceeded our expectations. We are pleased and hope this won’t be our last trip with Wanderlust Africa as Alexandra is partly responsible for the fact that we ‘lost our hearts in Africa’.”

“Up until now, we booked package tours where everything was specified and organized. Ms Katzer put together this trip in connection with the seminar organized by the Gulde Academy. Ms Katzer made suggestions to us, which we gladly accepted. Ms Katzer took care of the transfers and accommodation in advance and was always available for all questions, so we were optimally prepared. On-site, the drivers were available on time and knew where to take us and when. The accommodations were carefully selected so that we felt very comfortable everywhere. The trip was well organized and was an unforgettable experience for us. We will happily plan our future trips to Africa with Wanderlust Africa again.”

“The idyllic location and family-style accommodation were very well chosen and offered the right ambience for conducting my seminar. My wishes and ideas were implemented perfectly. The inspiring, supporting program gave a wonderful insight into the country and its people and offered many impulses for the participants. Alexandra planned and implemented my seminar trip professionally; the participants and I left Kenya with unforgettable impressions.”

Are you ready for the trip of your life-time?

Alexandra katzer, owner & founder, hi, i’m alexandra – your african experience guide.

My passion for cultures and diversity has taken me to new places throughout my life. Sometimes I wonder whether I’m African, Australian or European while in fact, I’m a pedigree German. True to the saying “You can take the girl out of Germany, but you can’t take Germany out of the girl”, I work with utmost precision, high attention to detail and efficiency – fine characteristics of the German culture you might say. I do however have a sense of humor and am always up for a good laugh. The other thing that is so not typical German: Neither can I play soccer nor can I engineer cars, but I can design the perfect safari holidays in Africa for you…

Feel free to browse through my Africa Travel Blog ; here you’ll find stories about my favorite trips and other useful information for safari holidays in Africa.

Beginning from the Angolan highlands, the Okavango Delta meanders all the way down to the flat plains of Botswana . This unique marshland stretches out for some 15,000 square kilometres and is home to a multitude of endangered species such as the white and black rhinoceros.

What makes this site one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa is during its flooding season when the delta’s vibrant eco-system comes alive, and attracts the greatest concentrations of wildlife in Africa.

Located inside Africa’s first national park lies one of the world’s most active volcanoes – Mount Nyiragongo. It is thought to have the fastest flowing lava in the world and is one of two volcanos responsible for 40 percent of eruptions in Africa.

It hasn’t had an eruption since 2002, but its deadly lake of lava is slowly rising once more. One thing is for sure, climbing Mount Nyiragongo is not for the faint of heart.

Egypt is more than its pyramids and legendary treasures of Tutankhamen. It is also home to the Red Sea, one of the seven wonders of the underwater world and a world-class diving destination.

Its warm red tinged waters offer insane levels of visibility, millions of fish, beautiful coral reefs and amazing wreck diving locations. And with 20% of the species are endemic to the area , a dive here is truly a unique experience.

Ethiopia is referred to as the Land of Origins and it’s easy to see why, especially while visiting Lalibela in the North of the country. Home to 11 remarkable rock-hewn churches that were carved from living rock and cannot be viewed from ground level.

It took thousands of workers nearly 24 years to create this UNESCO World Heritage Site that dates back to the 12th Century. Among them, the largest monolithic church in the world and the popular St George’s Church. All have winding drainage systems and potholed walls that for centuries served as shelters for pilgrims on their annual visit to the ‘New Jerusalem’.

Lesotho is a high-altitude landlocked kingdom surrounded by the Republic of South Africa. This unique destination is the only country in the world to have all its land lying at 1500 metres above sea level , thus earning its nickname “ Kingdom in the Sky. ”

As a country with such dramatic and beautiful scenery, a 4×4 road trip is one the best ways to explore its vast and varied yet underdeveloped landscapes. Visit the highest pub in Africa, the snow-capped mountains of Maluti or take in the unspoilt scenery of the Semonkong Falls.

No list of the most unique experiences in Africa would be complete without The World Cup of Wildlife . Every year, millions of wildebeest, zebra and antelope make their way from the Serengeti National Park to the greener pastors of the Maasai Mara.

It is considered one of the “ Seven New Wonders of the World ” and offers an unparalleled safari experience as half a million calves are born and nudged to their feet within minutes to keep them safe from the lurking predators.

One of the country’s most popular plant species is the Baobab trees. Lining the dirt road between Morondava and Belon’i Tsiribihina, this is the most accessible place to see Baobab trees in Africa. The Avenue of the Baobabs is an impressive row of 20 to 25 trees that live up to 800 years old and reach startling heights of 98 feet.

This striking landscape makes it one of the most visited locations in the region and in 2007, it was granted temporary protection status, marking its first steps to becoming Madagascar’s first national monument.

Despite its incredible wildlife, breathtaking landscapes and a rich cultural heritage, Malawi is one of the least visited African destinations.

Called the “Warm Heart of Africa” in the local language, the crown jewel of Malawi, is its most visited tourist attraction – Lake Malawi. However, one of the most unique ways to experience the natural beauty of Africa’s third-largest lake is to spend a few nights on Mumbo Island.

Mumbo Island is a deserted and pristine tropical island inside Lake Malawi National Park. It is home to some of the best freshwater snorkelling, and scuba diving in the world and the only accommodation available is one of the top 50 sustainable lodges in Africa to ensure the island retains its pristine heritage.

Quick. Think of a word to describe Morocco. If you are like me, you probably thought “Arabic” or “ridiculously hot desert.” However, just 45 miles from the vibrant metropolis of Marrakech, lies Oukaimeden – Africa’s highest ski resort.

Nestled in the High Atlas mountain range, Oukaimeden has a skiable area that is 6 feet higher than Val Thorens, one of Europe’s most sought-after skiing destinations. Intrepid travellers can also ski off Jbel Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa which eclipses the Vallee Blanche by over 1, 000 feet.

If you are looking to experience this unique adventure in Morocco, hit the slopes between the winter months of January and March.

One of Africa’s most popular destinations is the southern nation of Mozambique . Its coastline is dotted with pristine beaches like Tofo, and its waters are teething with an abundance of sea life.

Situated just 14km north of the South African border is Ponta Malongane, a Mozambican town best known for its excellent diving sites. However, once a year, this town opens its doors to one of the best music festivals on the continent – The Subterranean Rhythm & Blues Experience.

The festival has been running since 2003 and usually sells out within days of tickets going on sale. Coinciding with a great lineup of artists from across the continent, STRAB also arranges scuba-diving and snorkelling trips for festival-goers who want to make the most of their time in Mozambique.

Namibia is known for its remarkable natural destinations. Etosha National Park, the Kalahari desert and Fish River Canyon Park attract nature enthusiasts from all over the world.

However, Swakopmund attracts travellers for a different reason. It is Namibia’s adventure capital that is filled with adrenaline pumping activities juxtaposed against the German architecture and seaside promenades.

Spend a day sandboarding over the beautiful Namib Desert dunes or push your limits by skydiving. Hurle yourself out of a plane 10,000 feet above sea level and experience one of the purest thrills as you take in an unobscured view of Namibia’s landscape from above.

The “Land of a Thousand Hills” is home to the critically endangered mountain gorillas. With only an estimated 780 left in the world, gorilla trekking in Rwanda is a unique experience in Africa to catch a glimpse of the 300 gorillas living inside Volcanoes National Park.

While Rwanda is the most expensive country to see this vulnerable species, it is worth it. The trek is less physically demanding, there is less foliage which means better visibility, and with the Ugandan government evicting an indigenous tribe from their ancestral land in 1992 in the name of gorilla conservation, it is also more ethical.

It is no secret that South Africa is one of the continent’s top safari destinations. It packs a punch with its excellent wildlife sightings, 5-star lodges and a well-developed tour infrastructure.

While most people have the Kruger National Park at the top of their South African bucket list, the lesser known Addo Elephant National Park offers even bigger rewards for those willing to travel to the coastal town of Port Elizabeth.

Situated 75 km outside of the city, Addo offers nature lovers the chance to get up close with not only the Big Five but the Big 7. It is the only national park in the world where you can see lions, leopards, buffaloes, elephants, rhinos, whales and great white sharks. And for those that care about the little guys, Addo also contains the largest remaining population of the flightless dung beetle.

Despite Swaziland being the smallest country in the Southern Hemisphere, it does not lack for attractions and activities. It is one of the few remaining monarchies in Africa and has a rich local culture and heritage.

Swaziland’s internationally acclaimed music & arts festival BushFire is one of the best ways to experience a snippet of what this country has to offer. Every year, 25,000 people make their way to the lush Malkerns Valley to listen to some of Africa’s top artists and celebrate creative expression while promoting social responsibility.

As the country with the world’s highest estimated HIV-infected adults, the festival donates 100% of its profits to Aids orphans, making it a great choice for travellers who want to contribute towards responsible tourism at the same time.

For the avid trekker, Tanzania is the promised land. Its diverse landscape offers plenty of challenges from the active volcano Ol Donyo Lengai to the highest mountain in Africa – Mount Kilimanjaro.

Every year, 40 000 people summit “The Rooftop Africa” which stands at a staggering 5,895 meters above level. However, what makes Kilimanjaro a unique climb is its five ecological zones. As you ascend its iconic slopes, you will experience four different climate zones in a week. From the lush forest vegetation of the Savannah to the dead zone of Kibo which is home to a spider living at altitudes of 5500 meters.

The mighty Zambezi River feeds the world’s largest sheet of falling water: Victoria Falls . The levels of the Zambezi River drop enough to expose the basalt cliffs on the Zambian side of Victoria Falls during the dry season (between early August and late December). This is the only time you can swim in Devil’s Pool – a natural infinity pool on the edge of the cliff face.

Iga from Eager Journeys had this to say about her experience to this unique part of Africa: “ Our Tongabezi guide, Eustace, somersaults into the rock pool and we slide in after him. The water pushes us to the edge of the rock, where each minute over 500 million litres of water crash into Batoka Gorge below. The water spray can be seen and heard for kilometres, which is why the locals have named it Mosi-oa-Tunya – the smoke that thunders. ”

The trip to South Africa was really perfect in everything🙏 I would like to tell at once for everything at once: and for the fact that we again tell all our friends in a row about the unreal Nepaketniki (Wild Wanderlust), and for the fact that we have a dream to send our parents along with you on a tour to South Africa, and for the fact that on the last day During the tour, my husband and I both cried from emotions and from the fact that it was all over, and for the unrealistic girls of our travel bosses with whom we were very close, and for the organization :) In general, emotions did not subside even after a decent time after the end of the tour🙏

Questions and Answers to Seven Common Questions

This morning I was putting the final touches on a detailed African itinerary for a Compass & Vine traveler, inserting a few of my personal photos from my past safaris along the way. Just thinking of Africa was enough to make me want to teleport instantly. It’s a destination that I find fascinating and energizing, and a place I could talk about for eternity. I’ve always been drawn to Africa, as I know many out there are, but I also realize that for many first-timers considering an African getaway, the thought of how to approach an itinerary is intimidating… where do you start and what questions should you ask? When it comes to Africa travel, it often feels like there are more questions than answers when you’re in the exploratory phase.

I get it. There’s a lot to consider when talking about African escapes. They can take many forms, can span a huge range of budgets depending on your approach, and can encompass all sorts of experiences. There’s no ‘perfect’ itinerary for Africa because, as with all travel, it’s a matter of personal preference and interests. When I started Compass & Vine, Africa was actually my impetus. It’s a region that’s heavy with logistics and planning but so rich and rewarding once you make the journey. If you’re considering a trip to Africa and are in the exploratory/brainstorming phase, reach out ! I’m happy to chat – no obligation – and help sort out your direction.

Now, let’s talk common Africa travel questions for safaris and beyond — plus some answers. Below, I’m sharing six common considerations, some insight, and hopefully some inspiration. If you came to this page from my weekly C&V newsletter, thank you for popping by. 👋🏼

How Long Should I Allocate?

African Safari Questions, Africa Travel Planning

When it comes to how long to allocate for an African getaway, there are a number of factors to take into consideration, the most obvious being your personal situation with work and life obligations. I’ve done it many ways: I once visited Kenya for one week (!), I spent a month in Africa exploring East and Southern Africa, I spent two weeks in Tanzania last year, and three weeks in Kenya this year. Each trip took different amounts of time, captured different itineraries, different people, and different focuses. All of that said, my general response to this without very much context would be two weeks. Yes, you can go for less time, but if you’re traveling from the US, there’s travel time to consider, jet lag (it gets even the best of us at times), and internal travel logistics.

Depending on your lifestyle and personal obligations (retirees will have a different set of questions than honeymooners trying to take time off of work), the questions of ‘how much time do I allocate?’ and ‘where should I go?’ may come in different orders. For some of us, our time constraints dictate where we can feasibly go; for others of us, our wishlist will dictate the amount of time really required to do it right. However much time you allocate, remember that spending time in each location is important. Nature is unpredictable so you’ll want at least 3 nights at each camp to get a feel for the pace and for what’s out there, more if you can swing it.

Where Should I Go?

Africa Travel Questions, Africa Travel Planning

This question is multifaceted because Africa is not solely about safari life, though that’s the obvious draw for many. First, consider your personal preferences and desires. What are you interested in experiencing during your time there? Are you just focused on a safari or would you like to incorporate beach time, city time, or wine tasting into your itinerary? How important are cultural experiences to you? What sort of landscapes are you envisioning when you’re visualizing your trip? Those elements will help point you in the right general direction.

When we practically talk about Africa, I find it mentally helpful to break the continent into two sub-regions: Southern Africa and East Africa.* During my Abercrombie & Kent Africa Specialist program, we discussed comparing and contrasting Eastern and Southern Africa in terms of wildlife, landscapes, food and wine, beaches, etc. After better understanding the differences in these regions and the activities and experiences on offer you may feel drawn to one region over another.

For example, if you’re keen on doing a bucket list hike and a safari, Tanzania would fit the bill combining Kilimanjaro with safaris in world-class destinations like the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and private reserves. If you’re more focused on a water-based safari, Botswana would better suit you. If you want safari life combined with a week of a cosmopolitan fix and seaside R&R, then South Africa could better suit you to fulfill adventure + gastronomic pursuits. If mountain gorillas are a dream for you, you’ll be focused on Uganda, Rwanda, or the DRC.

The season in which you choose to travel (more below) may also have a bearing on your choices. Wet season vs. dry season are considerations, and in places like South Africa, winter vs. summer months in certain regions may encourage you one way or another.

*North Africa is a conversation that is better lumped in with Middle Eastern travel, and West Africa is a different region entirely.

Take a peek at a South Africa vs. East Africa comparison .

Should I Visit Multiple Countries in One Trip?

Africa Travel Questions, Africa Travel Planning

You’re going a long way – it’s normal to want to wrap in as much as possible! Whether or not a multi-country itinerary makes sense has to do with activities, allocated time, and tolerance for internal logistics. Let’s start with one fact:  Africa is a massive continent.  It’s bigger than China, India, the contiguous U.S. and most of Europe combined.  That said, there are countries that are natural pairings that work well together. You could look at combining Kenya for safari + Uganda or Rwanda for gorilla trekking, combining Kenya + Seychelles for a bush + beach escape, or potentially combining Namibia for desertscapes with South Africa.

That all said, it’s worth also remembering that these countries have beautiful diversity within them. During our three weeks in Kenya this year, for example, we spent a week on safari in the Masai Mara, a week on the beach in Diani, and nearly a week based on the island of Lamu for a serious culture fix. In Tanzania, you can pair hiking Kilimanjaro with a safari in the Serengeti and a post-safari break in Zanzibar. In South Africa, you can easily combine a safari with R&R on the coast, wine tasting in the Cape Winelands, and a city fix in Cape Town.

When Should I Go?

Africa Travel Questions, Africa Travel Planning

This is a question about seasonality and it’s an understandable question: if this is my one and only trip to Africa, when should I go? Well, here it’s a bit less about winter and summer, and more about wet vs. dry seasons. Some destinations and experiences (e.g. the Great Migration or whale watching) are more seasonal by nature while others can be enjoyed year-round. Some parks are also more apt to be fruitful in ‘green season’ while others may be much more of a no-go. If the Migration is your focus, you’ll want to set your sights on the July through October time frame depending on where you’re heading (Kenya vs. Tanzania)… and you’ll want to budget accordingly. That said, we visited the Masai Mara during March, their ‘green season’, which was more prone to weather given it’s the season of the short rains. We had an amazing experience seeing the Big 5, including tons of babies. The scenes were different than what we saw in Tanzania during the migration when wildlife was overflowing, but our experience was still spectacular.

Take a peak at this quick overview of the best time to travel to East Africa vs. Southern Africa .

How Much Should I Budget for Africa Travel?

Africa Travel Questions, Africa Travel Planning

The most common question that no one really wants to ask… how much do I budget?! First, I think it’s critically important to recognize what the cost represents and understand that even luxury has a broad range available. While it can be tempting, it’s really not very useful to think about safari camps like a traditional hotel when you’re considering your budget (e.g. ‘X amount per night’). They’re not a traditional hotel (they go far beyond that), and when you’re looking at a quote for your African travel experience, it includes more than simply accommodations and is generally quoted on a per-person basis. Generally, when I’m providing a quote for Africa, it includes everything: accommodations, yes, but also your meals, beverages, sundowners, transfers, drivers/guides, internal logistics (flights), park/conservancy fees, along with some additional experiences in cities and in some cases a contribution to community initiatives. Also, it’s worth bearing in mind the remote nature of operating a camp in these areas and the expense of doing so. Camps have to operate a business successfully and support staff which includes everyone from drivers, guides, cooks and camp managers to laundry attendants, guards/night watchmen, vehicle mechanics, and behind-the-scenes folks who repair your tents and take care of other necessary operations needs.

With that said, I’d suggest mentally starting your budget at $1000 per person per day, knowing that figure can very well go up to $2000+ per person per day for ultra-luxury experiences during peak season. Rates vary based on seasonality and the difference can be quite substantial. If you’re heading to Kenya or Tanzania during the Migration, budgeting $1000 – $1250 per person per night (roughly) will get you into a solidly lovely 4* property, while you’ll want to skew to the $1750 – $2500pppn side for 5* luxury options. Again, keep in mind the per person per night figure that you budget is for the scope of your trip. For 10 days in Kenya for example this could mean 2 nights in Nairobi (less expensive) and 8 nights on safari split between two camps (more expensive). Those nights may not each be $1000 per person per night, but we also account for internal flights, drivers, and other logistics.

Worth noting: while some camps and quotes include your gratuities, oftentimes they do not. Tipping should be budgeted for as well as it’s an important income component at most camps and is a general practice. Usually, tipping involves tipping your personal driver and guide who’ve taken care of you (this can be one or two people), and then also tipping the camp with a sum that will be distributed appropriately amongst the staff by the camp manager. Tips are done in cash and can be done in local currency or USD.

What Extras Should I Splurge On?

Hot Air Ballooning in the Masai Mara

Alright, I mentioned that your safari is really all-inclusive so there’s very little you need to consider beyond those expenses with the exception of gratuities, souvenirs, and some extra experiences here and there. What’s worth splurging on? My #1 thing would be a hot air balloon. ICYMI, we went hot air ballooning in the Masai Mara  and it was pretty much the greatest. Even my acrophobic mother and husband were in utter awe and swore we would splurge on doing this again on a future trip. Balloon costs vary but expect to spend $400 – $500 per person for ballooning and a champagne brunch to cap off the experience.

Other things that could be add-ons depending on your destination (these can be added into the initial quote provided): privatized experiences (like a private afternoon at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust vs. the public session), visiting the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary in Lewa , a zip line adventure down the edge of the Great Rift Valley, cycling experiences, food and wine tours, helicopter flights, whale watching tours, SCUBA trips, ATV experiences, private boating experiences, and more.

Are Safaris Kid-Friendly?

HOTEL INSIDER: A Stay at Little Chem Chem, Tanzania

This is a bonus question not included in my newsletter this week but a question worth discussing. In this section, let’s talk safaris in particular as this is usually the biggest question mark for parents. When we ask this question, we really mean two things: 1) Can I take my kids on safari (as in, are they actually allowed), and 2) Should I take my kids on safari (as in, is it worth the expense and will they remember it)?

The short answer to number one is: it depends. It depends on the camp itself. Some camps are firmly adults only, usually only making an exception if you’re buying out the property with a group. That said, there are camps that are totally kid-friendly as well. Serian, for example, where we have stayed twice, welcomes children of all ages. All vehicles are private use so other guests aren’t impacted by having someone else’s children in their vehicle, and the guides can even cater their discussions and experiences to a kid-friendly level (eg. going out on a walking safari focused on learning about tracks and animal behavior).

Question #2 – should you take your kids – is a matter of personal choice and financial means. Kids are often less expensive than adults price-wise but it’s still an investment. Knowing your child’s personal capacity will help dictate whether they have the understanding and maturity level to be out on safari. Depending on their stamina, you may need to alter your schedule to work with theirs. That said, I generally think 7 – 10 is an entry point age-wise (again, depends on the child’s maturity). There is so much to learn and appreciate at a young age, and what they may not fully comprehend and appreciate given their limits, I think is made up for by the fact that they’re expanding their minds in a major way, learning not just about wildlife and conservation (so important!) but also about different cultures and ways of life.

Alright, have I got the juices flowing with all of this safari talk? I’m ready to book a return trip ASAP and if you need help with yours, let’s talk! If you’re not already subscribed to my weekly newsletter with Compass & Vine , pop over and sign up to get more travel talk in your inbox twice a month.

He ensured that all our concerns were met and made us feel comfortable so we could enjoy the ride and take in the amazing scenery and ever changing cultures of our road and gravel trip. “The favourite part of my trip was scaling the heights of Mt. Kenya, via the beautiful glacial lakes on Chogoria side of the mountain. A swim would have been way too cold but a gaze was as warm as any other day off the mountain. For all that dare, be prepared to be amazed.”

I've seen nearly every corner of Kenya with him, and I can't wait for the next trip. 1st choice for Diaspora travelers as well!”

I hiked up Mt Meru, Tanzania in 2018 and Mt Kenya in 2019 using Wanderlust. The trips were organised professionally and Desmond, our tour leader, was very knowledgeable and energetic as he guided us expertly and treated us very well. I would recommend him to any outdoor enthusiasts wanting to do a trip within East Africa.

Wanderlust Outdoors were recommended to me by a previous customer, and I had no hesitation booking with them based on the feedback. Desmond tailored an itinerary to suit my short time in Kenya. Desmond was exceptional and a very knowledgeable guide. I had lots of flexibility to make any changes as I went along too which was ideal, and Desmond was also available to answer any questions I had in advance. He always took care to ensure I was getting the most out of the holiday. I thoroughly enjoyed my trip and have no hesitation in recommending Wanderlust Outdoors for a Kenyan adventure holiday.

~Odunga Abuodha – Nairobi, Kenya

The climb to point Lenana was on my bucket list and fate chanced the meeting with Desmond and Wanderlust Outdoors. We were myself and my 11yr old son, and a friend and his 10yr old son. The organisation was top-notch, from the pre-climb preparation to get physically into it, to the gear and advise on what to bring. Our concerns for the little ones was quickly settled as we embarked on the journey. We had a professional crew of porters, warm and social. The guides were splendid and I must say, we enjoyed every bit of it. The bonding with my child was a moment I will always cherish. We went up slowly, and as luck would have it, it was the "mildest" weather, as mild can be.

I had an amazing experience with Wanderlust Outdoors when I took on Mt. Kilimanjaro to celebrate my 40th birthday. The route and plan were all in my favour and on 14th September 2019 I as I turned 40yrs old I was at Uhuru peak, the roof of Africa!!!!! The expedition was well organised including a professional and pleasant team (guide, chef and porter) on the trail. The birthday cake surprise after descending was awesome and had me in tears!

Mt. Kenya organized by Wanderlust. What a great experience! I can highly recommend them as your climbing partner when you have decided to climb this beautiful mountain. Personalized planning, and a very professional team, provided by Desmond and Wanderlust. Will plan the next trip with them again! Not only for mountain climbing.

~Wendy N – Nairobi Kenya

I have used Wanderlust Outdoors several times, and I keep coming back because it is the best travel company you can use for activity-related, cultural, and even solo trips anywhere in Kenya. In February 2019, I contacted Desmond for a Bike Safari and together with my kids (9 and 6 years olds) we were able to cycle amongst herds of grazing zebras, wildebeest, antelopes, ostriches, and even giraffes. It was a most pleasant experience. In April of 2019, a group of friends booked a mixed activity and cultural tour of Northern Kenya with Wanderlust Outdoors. The 7-day tour was simply stunning. Desmond was with us the entire time and he took excellent care of us. He is also a very knowledgeable tour guide and very much at home anywhere in the country. This made our trip very enjoyable. I would highly recommend Wanderlust Outdoors to anyone looking for a great travel experience; customised unique tours, and excellent customer service.

Personal involvement of Desmond, the owner of Wanderlust, made the whole trip 100% right. He works with the best people for every adventure, in our case the Kilimanjaro. I climbed the mountain with my sons and we all made it at the same time thanks to Salim, the guide, and his team. Only the best tour operators work with the best guides.

~Sebastiaan K

Better late than never… - in February 2022 my father, my two brothers and I reached the summit of the Kilimanjaro. Desmond (owner of Wanderlust) joined us and made sure his friend and our guide, Salim, gathered the best team as possible. The energy and motivation of this entire team is something you can’t describe with words. Without them, we wouldn’t have reached the summit. It was one of the thoughest experiences for me and my family, but they did everything in their power to make sure we would reach it. Besides, the food was great too. Every meal was great even though the cooking possibilities were limited! Everything just worked out perfectly during this trip thanks to Desmund and Wanderlust!

wanderlust africa tours

We had an amazing trip up to Mt Kenya organised by Desmond and his company Wanderlust! The team, guides, and porters, were put together carefully and ensured a smooth trip from beginning to end. The food provided was great too. Would definitely recommend Wanderlust if you are planning any adventure in Kenya or East Africa.

What an experience!!! 3 nights up Mount Kenya, with unique camping sites. Wanderlust had put together an amazing team to take care of us, cook great food and guide us to the top. Would definitely recommend this trip and organization!

Moscow Bucket List!

Moscow is a city that has completely intrigued me for years. The architecture is so unique and intricate, yet the city is so large and overwhelming that it exists quite cleverly as a paradox. With so much to see and do in Moscow, a visit should be no less than three or four days, though if you had a week here you would continue to be entertained by the many offerings… so what are you waiting for!? Here’s the complete Moscow Bucket List you need to start checking off ASAP!

Moscow Cathedral

1. Visit the Kremlin

As the capital of the former Soviet Union, Moscow holds a strong significance not just at present, but in modern world history as well. The Kremlin is a fortress that serves as the centre of Russian governance and houses an array of interesting museum collections, including the Armoury Collection, the Diamond Fund, several churches, and other points of interest. Be sure to arrive early as a guided tour is the best way to see the Kremlin and learn about its significance, and these fill up fast.

2. Stand in the Red Square

The Red Square is at the heart of Moscow and could thus be considered the heart of Russia. This should be your very first stop in the city and from here you will be able to visit many of Moscow’s main attractions as highlighted on this list. The Lenin Mausoleum and St Basil’s Cathedral are here, with one of the Kremlin’s walls bordering the square.

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

On that note, you absolutely cannot come to Moscow without setting your sights on St Basil’s Cathedral, and if you have time, stepping foot inside.

4. Explore the Moscow Metro

Moscow’s Metro stations are a sight in themselves – decadent, opulent and entirely over-the-top. Be sure to use the metro to get around the city or, if you’re short on time, here are the best stations to visit:

Novoslobodskaya Metro Station; Mayakovskaya Metro station; Elektrozavodskaya Metro Station; Shosse Entuziastov Station; Park Pobedy Metro Station; and Nakhimovsky Prospekt Metro Station.

5. Visit the Armoury

Back in the Kremlin, the most visited and most raved about collection is the Armoury; an impressive collection of royal clothing and chariots, mostly from the former Soviet period and WWII.

6. See the View from Vorobyovy Gory

If you’re wandering where to get the best view over the city of Moscow, look no further.

7. Visit Tsarytsino Open Air Museum

This 18th-century Palace is home to impressive gardens and a museum full of antiques and fine art – a great pit stop for the art buffs!

8. Walk through Aptekarskiy Ogorod Botanical Museum

This is believed to be the most gorgeous garden in the entire city, so if you’re visiting in the warmer months be sure to stop by.

World of Wanderlust in Moscow

9. See a show at the Bolshoi Theatre

Located in the centre of the city, the Bolshoi Theatre is one of the most impressive in all of Europe and is home to one of the world’s best ballet companies. But if ballet isn’t your thing, you can also enjoy a night at the opera or enjoy classical music performances, depending on the season.

10. Sip Coffee at Cafe Pushkin

If you want an old, classic, Russian establishment to kick back and enjoy a coffee or a spot of lunch, then you simply must visit Cafe Pushkin! Although it is mostly visited by tourists visiting the city, the authenticity of the old cafe is too good to resist.

11. Stroll Along Old Arbat Street

Old Arbat Street (pictured above) was one of my favourite and completely underrated spots to explore in Moscow. The street is lined with artists’ work as well as artists painting as you walk by and is great street to wander amidst your explorations in the city.

12. Experience Sandunovskye Baths

Russian bathhouses (Banya) have been incredibly popular over the years and should you wish to see one operating in the present day or indulge in a little bathing yourself, be sure to drop by Sandunovskye Baths.

13. Go Shopping in GUM

As Moscow’s most famous shopping centre, GUM is an incredible display of Russian wealth and opulence. Although the prices are out of most shoppers’ budgets (myself included), a visit here is still worthwhile to walk the glitzy halls.

14. Visit the Tretyakov Gallery

Regarded as one of the world’s best museums, Tretyakov Gallery offers an incredible display of Russian art and would be my top pick if you were to visit just one museum in Moscow!

15. Drink Russian Vodka

Whilst in Russia it would be just plain blasphemy not to try the most famous local delicacy – vodka, of course! Drop in to any bar and you’ll be hit with an absolute mecca of choice… so be sure to try a few!

16. Eat Russian Borscht

Although it tastes as good as it looks to a Western palate (that could just be me!!!), Russian Borscht is a classic dish to try if every there were one. There are many different variations throughout Eastern Europe, so if you do fancy the purpley-pink soup dish, you have plenty of choices! The dish originated in Ukraine but is incredibly popular throughout Russia and will be available in most restaurants in Moscow.

17. Step Inside the State Historical Museum

One of my favourite buildings in Moscow and impossible to be missed from the Red Square, is the State Historical Museum (pictured above). Even if you don’t step inside, this museum is an incredible sight to the eyes and the intricacy of the building’s facade should not be missed up close!

18. Visit Novodevichy Convent

As both a convent and a fortress, Novodevichy remains incredibly well in tact for a building that was constructed in the early 16th-century!

19. Step Inside Cathedral of Christ the Savior

Located on the northern bank of the Moskva River, this particular cathedral is an incredible display of architecture (if you’re not completely over Cathedrals by now!) Standing tall at over 103 metres, this is the tallest Orthodox Christian Church in the world.

20. See Lenin’s Mausoleum

Located at the Red Square, Lenin’s Mausoleum is an incredibly popular sight for visitors to Moscow and much of that is to do with the ongoing mystery: is it really him?

21. Admire Ivan the Great Bell Tower

If you want a great view over the city of Moscow you will sadly have to look elsewhere, as climbing the impressive Ivan the Great Bell Tower is not permitted (though imagine that view if it were!!!) Regardless the Bell Tower is quite impressive so is worth seeking out whilst in Moscow.

22. Go Ice Skating in Gorky Park

If you happen to visit Moscow in the colder months you might be left feeling slightly disappointed by many outdoor attractions being closed… but one that won’t be is the (many) ice skating rinks throughout the city! The most popular of these is in Gorky Park.

23. Get out to Explore the Golden Ring

One of the most popular day trips from the city of Moscow is to the Golden Ring, a collection of small towns and cities that are home to a range of buildings rich in Russian culture and history. If you have more time in the city and would like to get out, be sure to make the Golden Ring your first choice or, if travelling onwards, be sure to stop by St Petersburg!

Over to you! What were your favourite moments from your trip to Moscow to share with readers??

Africa: Russia's Growing Influence in Africa Calls for More Balanced Partnerships

As Moscow makes gains through bilateral deals, African states must avoid getting drawn into a global proxy conflict.

In early June, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov visited Guinea, the Republic of the Congo and Burkina Faso - his sixth official visit to Africa since 2022. As Russia ramps up its charm offensive, can African states avoid becoming entangled in Moscow's geopolitical competition with the West?

The rivalry intensified with the war in Ukraine, and several European countries have recently accused Russia of a coordinated sabotage campaign across the European Union (EU). The Kremlin says its growing presence in Africa isn't about competition with the West, but anti-Western rhetoric often follows Russian visits.

It's also clear that the Russo-Ukrainian war has elevated Africa's importance in Russian foreign policy. While Russia's 2016 Foreign Policy Concept included minimal engagement with the continent, the 2023 version referred to Africa as a 'distinctive and influential centre of world development.'

Africa is the largest voting bloc in the United Nations, with 54 out of 193 voting members. Unsurprisingly, Western, Ukrainian and Russian diplomats rushed to secure support from African states early in the war. But the conflict negatively impacted international food, energy and finance systems. Food security became an urgent issue for Africa, and the Kremlin used that to engage with African countries and promote itself as an alternative partner.

Yet, despite the pageantry and public declarations, Russia's initial efforts have fallen short of expectations, for three reasons. First, Russia's trade volume with Africa in 2022 (US$18.4 billion) was lower than the continent's traditional partners, such as China (US$199 billion), Italy (US$76.3 billion), France (US$67.8 billion), the US (US$65.7 billion) and Germany (US$45 billion).

Even more telling is how low the figures are for African imports from Russia - under 2% - compared to other global trade partners (see chart). These trends may explain why African countries' initial response to Moscow's strategic pivot has been tepid. Only 17 African heads of state attended the 2023 Russia-Africa Summit - less than half of those at the 2019 summit.

Second, Ukraine's success in ending Russia's naval blockade eased export restrictions on grain in 2023, and food prices are expected to drop in 2024. Food security remains an important topic for Russian and Ukrainian relations with Africa, but the war no longer has the same urgency for the continent. Some African states, like Morocco, even used the trade disruption to increase their share of the market .

Finally, by the 2023 Russia-Africa Summit, most African states had voiced their positions on the war, with many opting for non-alignment. This seems unlikely to change. As a result, global powers are competing to influence and secure African support for specific issues.

In this regard, Moscow's bilateral engagements are bearing fruit. To start with, Russia's re-connection with Africa was accelerated by geopolitical shifts in the Sahel. These have challenged the dominance of traditional powers and created an economic and security vacuum in the so-called Coup Belt.

The Kremlin's openness to unconditional partnerships helped position Russia as a new favourite and, sometimes, the only international partner for countries facing isolation and sanctions. Two of the three nations Lavrov visited in June - Guinea and Burkina Faso - have experienced recent coups and remain under sanctions, including from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). After Niger's 2023 coup, Russia warned ECOWAS against using military measures in the country.

And while Moscow's actions may weaken ECOWAS and the African Union's responses to coups, Russia has managed to avoid being seen as a disruptor by West African countries. This is an example in Africa, as happened in Syria , of Russia leveraging its growing importance by becoming part of regional peace and security discussions.

But Russia's greatest success comes from bilateral security agreements, including training and weapon supplies. Lavrov's visit coincided with Russian Deputy Defence Minister Yunus-Bek Yevkurov's trip to Libya and Niger. Russia is expected to sign security agreements with Chad, Guinea, Congo, Libya and Niger.

A new Polish Institute of International Affairs (PISM) report says Yevkurov is now responsible for Africa Corps (formerly Wagner) operations in Africa. Wagner's activities on the continent have been compared to those of an organised crime group, focusing on illicit activities, smuggling, and money laundering. While the Kremlin claimed a degree of separation, Wagner supported Moscow's interests.

The PISM report notes that under new management, Africa Corps is pursuing Russian strategic objectives more effectively, emphasising formal economic and security cooperation. The specific intent is to displace Western political influence in Africa by establishing alternative security cooperation agreements.

Russia's cooperation with Sahelian states comes at the expense of France, which has been losing influence in the region. A recent report says France is set to drastically decrease its military presence in West and Central Africa, owing partly to the lack of demand for training and security partnerships. Russia is also making gains in Lusophone Africa, with Portugal expressing concerns about its increased influence. All six Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa have signed military agreements with Russia.

The strategy is gradually paying off. Bilateral deals with Russia won't tip the global balance of power in Africa, but will make African states more cautious about their stance on the war in Ukraine, or criticism of Moscow.

This was evident in the limited participation of African countries in Switzerland's Summit on Peace in Ukraine this month. Before the event, Russia and Ukraine lobbied 'global south' countries, especially in Africa. Russia criticised the summit and campaigned to dissuade countries from participating. Ukraine sought to ensure global south participation, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy personally inviting several African leaders.

Even though the Summit on Peace's agenda focused on soft humanitarian issues such as prisoner exchange, the return of Ukrainian children and food security, only 13 African countries participated. Only 10 signed the final declaration.

Russia's growing presence shouldn't necessarily be seen as a risk, and its increasing footprint may complement Africa's relations with new and traditional partners. But while African states have become less concerned about the war in Ukraine, the continent has remained a priority for Ukraine, Russia and other major powers. As these global contenders seek Africa's support or neutrality, countries on the continent must avoid being used or becoming a belligerent in a proxy war.

An underwater rail tunnel may link europe with africa by 2030.

Hassan II mosque at sunset, Casablanca, Morocco

In just over five years, there’s a good chance that you will be able to board a high-speed train in Madrid and travel from Spain to the Moroccan city of Casablanca in five and a half hours, hurtling through a new tunnel under the Strait of Gibraltar. This may sound like something from a Jules Verne novel, but it was first discussed by Spain and Morocco in 1979. They even did feasibility studies through 1981, but the project failed to progress beyond that point.

Spain and Morocco are now reconsidering this ambitious undertaking, spurred in large part by the approaching 2030 FIFA World Cup. It will mark the centennial World Cup competition, and for the first time, three countries from two continents will host the competition: Spain, Morocco, and Portugal. Fans will want to travel between these countries for matches as quickly and efficiently as possible. They might as well do so on a 21st century engineering marvel.

The Moroccan National Company for Strait Studies (SNED) has announced that it has begun researching the project's viability, called the Euro Africa Gibraltar Straight Fixed Link. Spain commenced such studies in 2023 under the aegis of the Spanish Society for Fixed Communication Studies across the Strait of Gibraltar (SECEGSA).

Two high speed trains "Al Boraq" operated by the ONCF at Tanger-Ville Railway Station

Some of the impetus for rethinking this project came after Morocco completed its first high-speed rail project, a train that connects Casablanca with Tangier, in 2023. It’s now not only the fastest train on the African continent, but it demonstrated that the country was ready for another significant rail challenge.

Gibraltar Rock and La Linea de la Conception, with Morocco in the background.

The Strait of Gibraltar, at its narrowest point, is just a nine-mile gap between the European and African continents. Now, imagine the convenience of a high-speed underwater rail tunnel connecting Spain and Morocco. It’s projected that this tunnel could reduce travel time from Madrid to Casablanca to just five and a half hours, a significant improvement from the current 12-hour journey by car and ferry or the two-hour flight, the latter much longer when you factor in travel time to and from airports.

Departing Madrid, there would be a stop in the Spanish city of Algeciras, at the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula, near the Strait of Gibraltar. The train would then head into a tunnel under the Strait of Gibraltar, running between Punta Paloma in Spain and Punta Malabata in Morocco. Its next stop would be the city of Tangier in Morocco before reaching its final destination, Casablanca. Between Algeciras and Tangier, the distance would be about 26 miles, with 17 miles of track in the undersea tunnel. At its lowest point, the tunnel would lie about 1,550 feet below sea level, with a maximum gradient of about 3%.

Madrid, Spain cityscape at Calle de Alcala and Gran Via.

This would be the first-ever rail link between the two continents, and the primacy of the World Cup aside, it would connect and open up existing rail routes in both countries and far beyond. SECEGSA suggests it could carry up to 12.8 million passengers between continents annually. The construction costs are unknown, but estimates are between $7 and $8 billion.

There is currently no deadline or project start date. Financing will presumably come from the host countries, Spain and Morocco, with additional support from sources such as the European Union. Yet, at a time when high-speed rail has become more popular than ever across Europe, it’s an inventive, imaginative, and exciting project that appears to have a decent chance of succeeding.

How Delta made itself America’s luxury airline — and what United wants to do about it

Travelers At HartsfieldJackson Atlanta International Airport As Congress Averts FAA Lapse With Stopgap Passage

Delta Air Lines  is the country’s most profitable airline. CEO Ed Bastian’s challenge is to make sure his carrier stays on top.

The airline’s unit revenue, the amount it brings in for every seat it flies one mile,  outpaced  its competitors’ last year. Delta’s share price has soared almost 23% in 2024, more than any rival in the rocky airline   sector, in a rally that’s outdone the  S&P 500 ′s. It expects free cash flow to rise as much as 50% this year to between $3 billion and 4 billion, and is eyeing a return to an investment-grade credit rating. And a stat any traveler would appreciate: Delta came in first in punctuality last year, with more than 83% arriving on-time, according to the Transportation Department.

Rival  United Airlines  — second to Delta in net profit margins — is circling. It says it could  grow   profits  even more this year.

“Knowing that there’s someone that thinks that they can take that mantle from us, that keeps us on our toes and keeps us continuing to drive hard,” Bastian told CNBC.

Delta has fashioned itself America’s premium airline. It has won over hordes of splurging travelers, many of them carrying  American Express  cards, Delta’s cash cow of a partner that generated almost $7 billion for the airline last year. Sales growth of Delta’s roomier and more expensive seats continues to outpace revenue from standard coach.

As they vie for luxury flyers, both Delta and United have  added more high-end seating  to their planes to cater to travelers who deem worthwhile a $300 surcharge for a few inches of extra legroom on a cross-country round trip, or 10 times as much for a seat in business class.

Bastian, a former auditor who said he took his first flight at age 25 for a business trip (New York to Chicago), is in charge of ensuring Delta lives up to its brand luster.

On Wednesday,  Delta will take its next shot  in the battle for high-spending flyers when it opens its newest,  highest tier of airport lounge  at John F. Kennedy International Airport for passengers in its Delta One cabin, its top product that features lie-flat beds for longer flights.

At more than 39,000 square feet it will be Delta’s largest lounge, accented with pillows that have iconic zig-zag motif of Italian fashion house Missoni, its new amenity kit partner. It features complementary spa treatments, like ice globes and serum for jet-lagged eyes, along with showers, a full restaurant, and a deck overlooking the airfield, in a bet that travelers’ desire to treat themselves is here to stay.

Delta is taking a page from the playbooks of United and  American , which  already dedicate their swankiest lounges  to customers flying in long-haul business class. Delta plans to open Delta One lounges in Boston and Los Angeles later this year, and is studying airports where it could open others.

“The thing with this industry is no good idea goes uncopied,” said Raymond James airline analyst Savanthi Syth.

Meanwhile, United is placing huge orders for new  Boeing  and Airbus planes and remodeling hundreds of narrow-body cabins that feature seatback screens and bluetooth technology, a strategy that aims to cater to travelers in international business class or on the cheapest basic economy tickets.

“We haven’t exactly achieved the No. 1 profitability status in the industry, but I know we’re on our way,” United’s Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Nocella said in an interview last month. “If we continue to invest in our customers through great service and great products and great network, we know that will feed upon itself and it’ll help us achieve the financial results that we’re looking for.”

The airlines and American are approaching their 100th birthdays, and are trying to stay ahead — if not drive — shifting travel demand and still turn a profit.

United is adding to the more than 300 airports it serves. Figuring out the next hot destination is “part art” and “part science,” said Patrick Quayle, its head of network planning. The airline’s sprawling global network makes United the biggest U.S. airline by capacity and it recently launched service to places like Dubrovnik, Croatia and Amman, Jordan.

Quayle pointed to United’s addition of Cape Town, South Africa, which it first announced before the pandemic, as a success.

“Another airline has subsequently copied us. ... I might want to add based in Atlanta,” he said, alluding to Delta’s home city.

The latest changes come at a difficult time for a lot U.S. airlines. Labor and other costs swelled after the pandemic, eating into margins despite  record numbers of travelers . Added capacity in the U.S. market has forced carriers to  discount fares  in off-peak travel periods.

It’s tricky, and expensive, to change course. Even  Southwest Airlines  is facing  investor pressure  to add things like premium seating or  seat assignments  as its simple business model shows signs of age.

Meanwhile, U.S. consumers are  growing more selective : Some corporate leaders have lamented a spending pullback while others, like Delta’s CEO, are saying the opposite. Americans are still digging into the so-called experiences economy, and paying for more comfort along the way, according to Bastian.

“They may not be buying that new EV or that that new house, but they’re saying we’re going to go out and experience the world and invest in that experience,” he said. “And that’s why you see it happening in high-end concerts, high-end hospitality.”

‘Brick by brick’

When the U.S. was careening toward recession almost two decades ago, Delta’s leaders made a correct bet that travelers would eventually pay more to fly on its jets.

Delta was emerging from Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2007, which other U.S. carriers found themselves in the years after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Former CEO Richard Anderson said the airline had to start with basics: Stop losing bags. Make sure flights didn’t get canceled and arrived on time. Clean up the cabins.

“It was about building the operation brick by brick,” said Anderson, who handed the reins to Delta’s former president, Bastian, in 2016. “It didn’t matter what you did with AmEx. If the flight canceled, you ruined your brand.”

Delta took better care to avoid maintenance problems. It also started ferrying planes to airports to avoid cancellations if a replacement aircraft was needed.

And the carrier tried to clean up its image, hiring a marketing firm that advised former President Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign.

Anderson said the airline needed to be consistent and not fly its mix of paint jobs and cabin interiors. It faced fresh competition from low-cost airlines like a then-spritely upstart out of Queens, N.Y. called  JetBlue Airways . Delta and United had both launched their own low-cost subsidiaries, but they discontinued them.

Delta executives knew they needed a brand to match if they were going to command a premium over competitors.

“One of the things about being a premium product is consistency, consistency in policy, consistency in appearance,” said Anderson. “If you got on a flight in Tokyo we wanted you to feel like you were home.”

After the string of changes, Delta’s performance improved. Corporate business travel contracts helped boost profits and still do, as business travel returns post-pandemic.

Delta had a key advantage over competitors. After it came out of bankruptcy, it merged with Northwest Airlines in 2008, allowing it to stabilize and expand around the world while other carriers floundered. The rest of the industry spent much of the next decade recovering from bankruptcies and a subsequent musical chairs of mergers that  left four big carriers in control of about three-quarters of the U.S. domestic market . Delta’s rivals were years behind the carrier on integrating their merged staff, operations, networks and fleets.

Bastian said the carrier’s focus on reliability has made life easier for not just its customers, but also its employees.

“They’re not having to explain for a cancellation or mishandled luggage,” he said. “They have time to serve rather than to apologize.”

Delta is also unique as the least unionized of the major U.S. airlines, at about 20%. In April, as campaigns were underway to organize its flight attendants and other workers, it again  raised worker pay . Flight attendants for Delta’s regional carrier Endeavor, which are unionized, have recently demanded compensation on par with the carrier’s mainline flight attendants.

Time to remodel

After Delta got the basics down, Bastian, 67, who joined Delta in 1998, said it was time for the airline to focus on more ambitious projects.

“You had the liberty to start investing in premium,” he said. “You started to figure out how to to make first class more available to customers.”

It has expanded in big-spending New York and Los Angeles, the country’s two largest air travel markets by revenue, according to aviation data firm OAG.

Delta also built up its host of global alliances, joint ventures and minority ownership stakes, giving it more reach. That includes its 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic, which already had a strong foothold in premium air travel and popular lounges.

“I think some of that heritage has made its way into the core of Delta,” said Virgin Atlantic’s CEO Shai Weiss. “I’m not suggesting we are the messiah for Delta, but there is no surprise that Delta and Virgin Atlantic see eye-to-eye on many things.”

The vast majority of the more than 940 million people that flew on U.S. airlines last year fly in coach, and Delta has tried to make its flights more desirable travelers on all sections of the plane.

It remodeled old and dated terminals, and built out its network of luxury airport lounges, which are tied to its lucrative credit card deal with American Express. It added seat-back televisions and better in-flight entertainment options, and in February 2023, it  announced  its long-awaited  free Wi-Fi  to customers enrolled in its SkyMiles frequent flyer program.

Delta has invested more than $12 billion to rebuild and update its U.S. hubs with soaring ceilings, new technology and in some lounges, a signature scent. (“It’s proprietary,” said Claude Roussel, who oversees Delta’s lounges, when asked what was in it.)

One of its latest efforts is its terminal and new Sky Club at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, alongside other airlines’ new terminals. A decade ago, then-Vice President Joe Biden famously said someone who was blindfolded and taken to that airport would think, “I must be in some third-world country.”

The airline faced big problems along the way like a dayslong system outage in 2016. And the worst of all: Covid-19. Like other airlines, Delta accepted billions in federal aid to weather the pandemic. The carrier successfully urged some  17,000 workers to take buyouts , hiring newer, lower-paid staff that lacked the experience of departed employees. Early in the process, Bastian said the newer workers gave the company a “juniority benefit.” The airline employed about 100,000 people in the U.S. as of the end of last year.

Delta and its competitors also pulled out of many small cities as the pandemic eased, isolating some smaller cities amid a shortage of regional jet pilots.

But international travel has proved resilient so far, as consumers show they are willing to shell out on experiences.

Luxury air travel? In the U.S.?

Luxury air travel and the United States didn’t go together for many years — and   might not still, if you ask well-heeled globetrotters.

U.S. airlines don’t offer on-board showers or  roomy suites  like those on the superjumbos flown by the likes of Etihad Airways or Singapore Airlines. But the U.S. air travel market, the world’s largest, has gotten a number of upgrades in recent years, and travelers have grown to expect the same convenience they get from their online shopping sites and ride-hailing and food-ordering apps.

“Delta’s not bougie by any stretch, but when your competitors don’t try very hard, it doesn’t take much,” said Henry Harteveldt, a former airline executive and founder of Atmosphere Research Group.

But as a rewards-credit card boom, strong consumer spending, social media envy and a wanderlust that predated the pandemic combined to boost demand, airlines executives were taking notice.

Delta’s sales from premium products are growing faster than revenue from its main coach cabin, a trend the airline forecasts will continue. Sales from Delta’s loyalty business, premium cabins and other streams comprise more than half of the carrier’s revenue.

Airlines have made big changes as they struggle to accommodate the big-spending travelers armed with elite status. Major carriers have all overhauled their frequent flyer programs to reward the biggest spenders instead of those that fly the most miles,   and made it harder to earn coveted elite status.

And at Delta and other airlines, many of the perks for luxury flyers come through lounges.

One of Delta’s Sky Clubs in Los Angeles International Airport offers a separate, dedicated security lane for customers flying Delta One, away from the masses at the airport. That feature will make it to the new JFK lounge later this year, a Delta spokesman said.

United and American Airlines have also worked to glam up and expand their airport lounges, access to which is a common perk with credit cards.

Delta  softened some restrictions  on Sky Club lounge access last year — which it made to end annoying and  unsightly long lines  to enter its exclusive airport real estate — after an uproar from customers.

'We’re constantly pushing each other'

Both Delta and United have issued sunny financial forecasts for this year, while many carriers are losing money or not pulling in similar profit margins.

“Watching [Delta] succeed, I became convinced that the product mattered and service mattered, and we have done that at United now,” United CEO Scott Kirby said at a JPMorgan industry conference in March.

And at an investor conference last month, he pointed to how the two are pulling away from the rest of the pack in profitability, particularly at big hubs.

United has made some big bets that paid off. It held onto its wide-body planes, when travel demand collapsed in the pandemic, and has benefitted from the surge in international travel.

With United on Delta’s tail, Bastian is trying to expand the airline’s reach. Bastian has attended the massive Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and has announced new partnerships with  Lyft  and  Starbucks  for its loyalty program.

He says he can’t mystery shop on other carriers because he’s too recognizable, but said his team flies on competitors regularly to see what they can improve.

“We don’t own the market rights to innovation in our industry,” he said.

When asked what Delta can improve, Bastian threw kudos back to United for its detailed messages to travelers when there’s a disruption.

“They’ve done some nice things with their app,” he said. “I still think ours is better, but ... they’ve done a nice job in terms their communications with their customers and how they manage trip interruptions.”

Bastian added: “We’re constantly pushing each other.”

5 Must-Visit Sacred Temples Worldwide

Giresh Kulkarni, Founder of Temple Connect and ITCX shared with HT Lifestyle five must-visit sacred temples, each brimming with unique rituals and profound significance.

1. Shree Kaal Bhairav Temple, Varanasi

Located in the ancient city of Varanasi, the Kaal Bhairav Temple is one of the most revered Shiva temples in India. Kaal Bhairav is the Kotwal of Kashi. The temple is known for its unique ritual of offering alcohol and meat to the deity, which is uncommon in most Hindu temples. It is said that any holy pilgrimage to the Kashi Vishwanath temple is incomplete if devotees do not take Baba Kaal Bhairav's darshan and blessings.

2. Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Varanasi

Also located in Varanasi, the Kashi Vishwanath Temple is one of the most revered Jyotirlingas, making it a pivotal site in Hinduism. The temple stands on the western bank of the holy river Ganges, and it is believed that a visit to the temple and a bath in the river can lead to moksha, liberation from the cycle of life and death. The Ganga Aarti performed every evening is a spiritually uplifting ceremony that shouldn't be missed.

3. Shani Shingnapur Temple, Maharashtra

The Shani Shingnapur Temple is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shani (Saturn). It is located in the small village of Shingnapur in Maharashtra. The temple is a Jagrut Devasthan. The temple is unique because it does not have any doors or compounds, symbolising the belief that Lord Shani is ever-present and cannot be confined within walls. Devotees visit this temple to seek blessings from Lord Shani and to overcome obstacles and difficulties in their lives.

4. Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga, Maharashtra

The Trimbakeshwar Jyotirling is one of the 12 revered Jyotirlingas in India. It is located in the town of Trimbak, near Nashik in Maharashtra. It's unique because the Jyotirlinga is set in a void with three faces symbolising Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Rudra. This temple is also known for its rare practice of performing the Narayan Nagbali puja, intended to provide peace to the souls of the deceased.

5. Pratyangira Devi Mandir, Ayyawadi, Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu

The Pratyangira Devi Mandir is a unique temple dedicated to the goddess Pratyangira, who is believed to have the power to remove any obstacles in the form of evil spirits or negative energy. It is located in the small village of Ayyawadi near Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu. The temple is known for its unique ritual, Nikumbala Yajna, performed on no-moon days to protect devotees primarily from bad astrological influences and to bring prosperity.

Each of these temples offers more than just spiritual solace; they provide a glimpse into the profound cultural heritage and religious practices that are meticulously preserved and cherished in India. Whether you are a devout follower or a curious traveller, these temples promise a rich, enlightening experience.
