1. Govind Deo Temple

Located at a distance of a kilometre from the Vrindavan Railway Station is the Govind Deo Temple also popularly known as Govind Dev Ji Temple. It is one of the most important tourist attractions in the town. Govind Deo Temple was constructed by the King of Amber, Raja Man Singh in the year of 1590.

The architecture of this temple is unique as it is an amalgamation of the Hindu, Muslim, and Western style. It is made of red sandstone and is designed after the Greek cross symbol. A total of INR 10 million was spent in the construction of this temple. The temple rises up to seven stories and is dedicated to the worship of Govind, another name for Lord Krishna.

The temple underwent significant destruction following the attack by Aurangzeb in the year 1670, because of which the temple is only 3-storied now. Due to the severe destruction, most of the temple activities like prayer and puja takes place at a smaller temple situated behind the main temple.

A flight of stairs will lead you to the main hall whose ceiling is adorned with a lotus completely hand sculpted. The inner sanctum is made of silver and marble. The temple witnesses significant footfall during the holy festivals of Janmashtami and Holi.

Visiting hours: Open all days from morning 8:00 am till noon at 12:30 pm and again from 4:30 pm to 8:00 pm.

2. Prem Mandir

One of the largest temples to visit in Vrindavan is the temple of love, or Prem Mandir, dedicated to the worship of Lord Krishna and Goddess Radha. The temple is relatively new, its foundation stone was laid in 2001 and was opened to all by 2012. The construction of this vast temple cost about INR 150 crores. Prem Mandir is spread over a sprawling 54 acres of land.

The temple is a two-storied structure made of marble. The walls of the temple are decked with beautiful paintings depicting the Leela of Radha and Krishna. More than eighty panels on the wall are hand-painted. The inner sanctum of the temple houses the deities Krishna and Radha on the ground floor while the first floor is for Lord Ram and Goddess Sita. 

The whole temple is encircled by a vast garden with multiple flowering plants, fountains, and lights. There are also enormous statues of the gods and goddesses in the gardens- the most popular one being of Rasa Leela.

The temple also organizes a light show every evening, when the white marbles of the temple are prettified with artificial lights while the devotees offer their prayers and sing beautiful bhajans. The light show takes places in the evening from 7:30 until 8:00 in the night.

Visiting hours: Morning 5:30 am till 12:00 pm and 4:30 pm until 8:30 pm.

3. Kesi Ghat

Kesi Ghat is one of the most important ghats in the town situated at the banks of the Yamuna. This is one of the spots visited very early in the morning by tourists and religious devotees alike. It is believed that Lord Krishna took a dip in the waters of the Yamuna after slaying the demon named Keshi; hence this spot is one of the most unique places to see in Vrindavan.

The word “Banke” means bent or twisted at three spots, while Bihari means a cheerful soul. The whole routine of the Lord is also performed differently at three different times of the day known as the Shringar, Rajbhog, and the Shayan. While the Lord is at his Shringar it includes His bath and dressing up; Rajbhog involves a great feast, and Shayan is the time for His rest.

5. Nidhivan

Nidhivan, also known as Seva Kunj is a beautiful vast garden situated in Vrindavan. It is one of the most revered places to see in Vrindavan. This place is thronged by people all over the year as many legends are associated with this spot. People believe that Krishna and Radha performed the Rasa Leela in the same garden.

The locals and devotees strongly believe that Lord Krishna comes here every day after it is dark to dance with his Gopis, which is why people are prohibited from entering here after it is dark. The garden houses some Radha-Krishna temples with more than 1500 wild tulsi trees within the premises.

6. ISKCON, Vrindavan

ISKCON, Vrindavan is one of the most popular temples in India . It is also popularly called the Krishna Balaram Mandir. The temple was constructed in the year 1975. The temple is raised with the sole purpose of educating people on the Vedas and the Bhagavad Gita.

The inside of the temple has three altars for the Gods Sri Gaura Nitai, Balaram, Krishna, and Radha Shyamsundar. Upon entering, a vast white marble archway leads to the samadhi of Srila Prabhupada, founder of ISKCON. The temple doors are also gigantic in size and wholly carved from wood. One of the most beautiful tourist attractions in Vrindavan is the Sri Radha Damodar Temple located in Loi Bazaar, close to Seva Kunj. The temple was established in 1542 by a Guru Srila Jiva Goswami. The deities worshipped in the Damodar Mandir were gifted to Srila Jiva by His master, Srila Rupa Goswami Prabhupada. This temple also suffered significant destruction at the attack of Aurangzeb, after which the idols were shifted to Jaipur until 1739.

There are two prominent divisions inside the temple- the prayer hall or bhajankutir, and the Samadhi hall of Srila Rupa Goswami and many other Goswamis.

Jiva Goswami built a library within the temple premises to store the original manuscripts of the Goswamis. Although the temple lost many of its wonders, there are still some essential religious aspects existing, such as the Govardhana Shila (rock), which has Krishna’s footprints engraved on it.

8. Rangaji Temple

Rangaji Temple is one of the most ancient sites to visit in Vrindavan. It was built following the architectural style of the Dravidians in the year 1851.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Ranganatha or Rangaji who is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. One of the major attractions of the temple is the 50-feet tall Dhwaja Stambha and a six-story-tall Gopuram or the temple entrance tower. Beautiful gardens and a water tank surrounds the temple premise.

Rangaji Temple receives the maximum visitors during the months of March and April for the Brahmotsavam Festival. It is also popularly called Rath Mela when the devotees pull the chariot (rath) of the God to the nearby gardens.

It was placed inside the sanctum sanatorium of the Bankey Bihari temple in 1864. The temple was constructed by the descendants of Lord Rama. Swami Shri Haridas Ji was the founder of this temple. He was also the Guru of Tansen. The child form of Lord Krishna is worshipped here. There are no bells or other loud items inside the temple. The deity is taken care of as a child therefore no item is kept which can disturb a child.

It is situated at a distance of around 300 meters from the Bankey Bihari Ji Mandir. It was constructed by Sundardas Bhatnagar in 1585. How to travel cheaply and conveniently in Vrindavan?

• The most preferred mode of commute in Vrindavan is e-rickshaws . They are cheap, eco-friendly and zoom in any small lanes of Vraj quickly . They will charge around 10-40 rupees unless very far.
• Do not give them any amount above 60-70 bucks for any place as once they sense that you are coming for the first time, they will quote big astronomical amounts.
• Also, many devotees prefer to walk as all the major and popular temples like ISKCON, Prem Mandir, Radha Damodar, Radha Shyamsundar, Nidhivan, Meerabai Temple, Radha Raman, Gopeshwar Mahadev, Radha Madan Mohan, Radha Govinda etc. are located in around 2 km radius .

Bike for rent in Vrindavan

If you are just a couple of people, or in multiples of 2, you can rent a bike from Srila Prabhupada Emporium at Hare Krishna Residency, just near to the Bonraj Maharaj College and on the adjacent side of Main Gate of ISKCON Temple. They will take a security deposit of 1000 rupees, and will charge 500 rupees for Activa scooter and bikes. The advantage you will get is that you can go to any place around Vrindavan easily. Also, you can quickly visit Mathura, Barsana, Govardhan, Radha Kund easily. If you are good with using Google Maps, I would highly advise you to rent a bike or scooter to have a further great experience.

Though, please note that there are some instances of bike theft in Vrindavan, hence make sure that you park it securely or at parking only. Don't leave the bike at any random place for a longer period of time.

Must-do activities in Vrindavan

I would highly suggest any devotee or tourist coming to Vrindavan to make sure to participate in the below mentioned devotional activities.

Though every step in Vrindavan destroys sins of thousands of lifetimes and also bestows the result of 100 Ashwamedha Yagyas, what Rasika Vaishnavas teach is to be a seeker of vraja-prema bhakti .

Yamuna Boat Ride

Visit Kesi Ghat and take a boat ride. There are many boats there and they usually charge an arbitrary amount once they get a feel that you are a tourist so do not forget to negotiate with them. The ideal price would be 150 or 200 bucks for a 20-30 minute ride duration. It is a wonderful experience to witness the ghat from the waters of Yamuna Maharani as Keshi Ghat retains that traditional vintage vibe. If possible, do take Yamuna Snan or take achman if you are unable to take snan (bath).

Kirtan at ISKCON

There is a fully charged up enthusiastic kirtan at ISKCON Krishna Balarama Mandir 24 hours a day. It has been going on since 1986. It was re-established by Sripad Aindra Prabhu . You just step inside the temple hall and automatically get engaged in the Harinam Sankirtana. This is the final conclusion of all Vedic Scriptures. Harer Nama Eva Kevalam i.e. in Kali Yuga, there is nothing except Harinam for the deliverance of fallen conditioned souls.

Banke Bihari Darshan

The darshan at Banke Bihari Mandir is a tad different as the curtain opens and closes every alternate 10-30 seconds. The deities of Banke Bihari Ji just create a powerful impression on the viewer. You will witness a different experience here.

Yamuna Arti

Evening arti at Keshi Ghat on banks of Yamuna Maharani is flocked by devotees worldwide. There is a grand arti and you just get engaged in the festivities there. It starts at 5.30 and sometimes at 6 PM. Though, be careful not to wear spectacles there as monkeys can snatch it very easily. Also, be aware not to speak to anyone local or dicey here and do keep your mobile and wallet safe.

Chant Hare Krishna Mahamantra internally

While in Vrindavan, keep chanting Hare Krishna Hare Krishna | Krishna Krishna Hare Hare | Hare Rama Hare Rama | Rama Rama Hare Hare on your lips. You can get a bead and bead bag for 50-100 rupees anywhere in Vrindavan and keep chanting here. Krishna and Srimati Radharani become pleased with anybody who chants the holy names. Taking 1 nama (name) of Krishna in Vrindavan gives the result of taking Krishna's name 1000 times. Hence, try to keep chanting Hare Krishna Mahamantra when you are here (It would be nice if you can start if from the moment you read this from anywhere in the world). Chanting Hare Krishna maha-mantra manifests everything from within and gives you direction at every juncture of life about the very purpose of life itself.

Vrindavan Parikrama

A lot of devotees do Vrindavan Parikrama around Vrindavan (Parikrama means walking around in circle i.e starting and ending at the same place). It is a 13 KM walk around the circumference of Vrindavan Dham. By circumambulating Vrindavan once, you get the result of circumambulating all the temples in Vrindavan. It is said that all offences are destroyed by doing Vrindavan Parikrama.

One should keep chanting Hare Krishna Mahamantra while doing Vrindavan Parikrama and keep praying for a direction to vraja-prema-bhakti . A lot of devotees do parikrama on Ekadashi.

The natural scenic beauty on the 13 KM path is something that will linger in your memory for a long time and will make you very blissful internally. A good part of Vrindavan Parikrama route is untouched by modern buildings and retains that traditional feel with lots of greenery, peacocks, cows and parrots around.

Special Festivals celebrated in Vrindavan

Holi is celebrated with a lot of vigour and excitement. It is popularly celebrated at Banke Bihari Mandir, Radha Ramana Mandir, Radha Vallabha Mandir and around Loi Bazar with more enthusiasm. Thought the entire 13 KM parikrama marg is full of colours and it is no less than a film set. You love being here. It is one of the highlights of Vrindavan and devotees worldwide come here to attend Holi.

Janmashtami

Janmashtami sees a huge rush of pilgrims, and especially from nearby regions of Delhi and Rajashtan. All the mandirs are decorated no less than royal palaces and there is an extreme amount of fervours, glitz and euphoria surrounding the festivities of Janmashtami. A lot of religious ceremonies including kirtan, prasad distribution, yagyas happens at every other corner in Vrindavan. It is a joy to be here in Janmashtami and visit the temples here.

Radhastami is celebrated with more enthusiasm than Janamashtami as it is the appearance day of Queen of Vrindavan, Srimati Radharani, the personification of love of Sri Krishna. Everywhere, you see a lot of happiness, pujas and big feasts going on.

Kartik (every year)

Kartik usually falls from mid-October and mid-November every year. Kartik is also known as Damodar Mas. It is the month of Radharani and it bestows 1000 times more bhakti than any normal time of the year. This Kartik period is when Vrindavan is crowded to the core and it is almost impossible to find hotels for overnight stay. Thousands of devotees visit here on a daily basis and it is full of buzz and super high enthusiasm during Kartik. One must make it a point to come to Vrindavan every Kartik regardless of anything. it bestows thousands of times spiritual credits and sincere seekers really get direction and answers quickly in the quest of vraja-prema bhakti .

Important festivals celebrated in Kartik are Sharad Purnima, Radha Kund Appearance Day, Govardhan Puja, Diwali, Damodar Lila, Tulsi Vivah etc.

Purusottam (every 2.5 years)

Purusottam, also know as mal mas is considered as the top-most month to leave all work and just meditate on the Purustoamm Lord, or Sri Krishna with full heart and soul. It bestows 100000 times the benefit of doing bhakti on any other day. Thousands of devotees do Vrindavan Parikrama every day during Purusottam Maas. Even stepping for just a few hours in Vridnvaan during Pusursottam bestows results of millions of lifetimes of bhakti and it can be immediately felt internally by the sincere devotees.

Radha Kund is situated at a distance of 21 KM from Vrindavan. Radha Kund and Shyam Kund are considered as the two eyes of Govardhan Hill, which is shaped like a peacock (You can just search Govardhan Hill on Google Maps and see the shape of Govardhan Mountain which resembles a peacock from the top).

The popular Govardhan Hill, also known as Giriraj Ji is located 22 KM from Vrindavan. A lof devotees perform the 21 KM Govardhan parikrama on feet, which usually takes 4-8 hours. It is a very pleasurable and nice experience to sit approaching Giriraj Ji and chanting your mala here.

Gokul is at a distance of 20 KM from Vrindavan. It is the place where Krishna spent his early childhood in Yashoda Maiya and Nanda Baba's care. The place where Krishna showed the entire brahmanda (universe) in his mouth to Yashoda Maiya is located here. It was in Gokul that Krishna used to steal butter along with His sakha friends from Yashoda Maiya and gopis kitchen.

Bhandirvan is located 21 KM from Vrindavan and is the place where Radharani and Krishna got married. Though this marriage was not in front of the entire world and was extremely confidential. Vamshivat is hardly 5-minute drive from the main temple at Bhandirvan.

Raval is about 20 KM from Vrindavan and is the place where Radharani was born. The main mandir is very less visited by and the darshan of little Radharani is a treat for the devotees. Also, there is a garden just opposite the main temple where two trees are together wrapped in each other, one being black and the other being white in colour. Locals say that the white tree represents Radharani and the black one depicts Krishna.

Nandgaon is located at a distance of 48 KM from Vrindavan. It about 6 KM from Barsana. Krishna lived here after the Gokulvasis came to take shelter at Barsana as Gokul was burnt by Kans. It was all a plan by Krishna so as to arrange meetings with Radharani regularly. Later, Vrisbhanu Baba gifted the land of Vrindavan to Gokulvasis to establish their new village.

1. Banke Bihari Mandir

This temple is one of the most revered places of worship in the country. It is one of the 7 temples of Thakur of Vrindavan, along with Sri Radhavallabh Ji, Shri Govind Dev Ji, and four others. 

As you approach the Banke Bihari Temple, you see its beautiful Rajasthani-style building with arched windows and detailed stonework. Lord Krishna’s statue in the temple looks like a child and is standing in the Tribhanga position.

2. Shahji Temple, Vrindavan

Shah Kundan Lal built the Shahji temple for Lord Krishna in 1876. It is named after him. Chhote Radha Raman is the name of the main god in this place. Its impressive marble structure has 12 beautiful spiral columns that are each 15 feet tall. 

It also has the Basanti Kamra, which is a hall with Belgian glass chandeliers and intricate paintings. Most people who go to Shahji Temple are religious people or tourists who want to see the beautiful architecture. The Aarti at this newly constructed temple in the Brij area is always packed with devotees.

3. Prem Mandir

The Prem Mandir is a huge temple that was built by Jagadguru Shri Kripaluji Maharaj in 2001. This recently built temple is the most beautiful in the whole Brij area, and it is full of worshippers during the Aarti.

People think that the Rasa Leela took place in the same garden where Krishna and Radha were. Locals and devotees are sure that Lord Krishna comes here every day after dark to dance with his Gopis. 5. Keshi Ghat

Keshi Ghat is the most important ghat in Vrindavan, and it is the only one left. People think that Lord Krishna killed Keshi here in the Dwapara Yuga. Keshi was a horse demon sent by Kansa. Nearby is the Madanmohan Temple, and the ghat is one of the most important places to worship in all of Vrindavan. Every night at Keshi Ghat, the Yamuna maha-aarti is sung.

Queen Lakshmi Devi of Bharatpur built Keshi Ghat in the 17th century. It was built in a very fancy Rajasthani style. People believe that Vrindavan is not complete unless the “Pratham din Poojan” ritual is done at Keshi Ghat every day.

6. Radha Raman Temple

The Radha Raman Temple is one of the most revered early modern Hindu temples in Vrindavan. It is about 2 km from the Vrindavan Railway Station. It is a gift to Lord Krishna, who is called Radha Raman, which means “one who makes Radha happy.” People say that the temple has the original Shaligram deity of Krishna along with Radharani, who is the self-manifested deity from Shaligram Shila and has a mysterious smile on his face. People say that the Radha Raman Temple is one of the most important of the 7 temples built by Thakur of Vrindavan.

7. The Mysterious Garden

The Gopis are said to gather in this garden every night to see Lord Krishna perform his dance with them. The dancing Gopis, who appear as plants during the day and dance Gopis at night, are thought to be the cause of the flower plants’ wavy shapes. 

Other than that, there is a Gopi Talav in the compound, which is known as Lord Krishna well. Krishna made this well out of his flute when Radha Ji asked for water during the dance. Another Radha Ji temple is located on the premises and is still believed to be Radha Ji’s nighttime shelter.

8. ISKCON Vrindavan Temple

ISKCON Vrindavan, also called  Sri Krishna Balaram Mandir, is where Swami Prabhupada, the founder-acharya of ISKCON, made his dream come true. He wanted to build a temple for Krishna and Balaram in the same holy city where they used to play together hundreds of years ago.

The ISKCON temple in the Raman Reti neighborhood of Vrindavan has become the most popular place to visit in the city. Devotees come from nearby Delhi and all over the world to visit the temple. People who come to the divine temple are mesmerized by the daily classes on Aarti and the Bhagavad Geeta.

9. Uma Shakti Peeth

The Katyayani Peeth is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. It is also called the Uma Shakti Peeth. It’s in the city of Vrindavan. At this place, people worship an image of Uma that looks like the goddess Sati. 

People say that Maa Sati’s hair fell here when Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to cut Maa Sati’s body to free Lord Shiva from the pain of losing his wife. It stands 50 feet tall on Dwadashaditya hill, near Kaliya Ghat, and looks out over the Yamuna River. People think that Lord Krishna rested here after he defeated Kaliya Naag. Madana Mohan, Radha, and Lalita Sakhi are all worshipped here.

From the temple, you can see Vrindavan in a beautiful way. Vajranabh, the great-grandson of Lord Krishna, is thought to have built the Madan Mohan Temple in the past. Even though the buildings are very old, they are very well made.

With its epic expanse and diversity of landscapes, it seems like it should be easy to find some solitude in the USA .

But that's not always the case, with some of the country's beauty spots getting clogged with visitors, particularly during the summer high season . That's why we asked our expert writers and staff to share some of their favorite places in the country to find some space.

Here are 9 of the best places in the US to escape the crowds. 

1. Capitol Reef National Park, Utah

The thing about hiking at popular national parks is that you will inevitably get stuck in a bottleneck waiting to scramble over a rock or shuffle through a narrow path. That can kill the mood, so I was pleasantly surprised by how quiet Capitol Reef – one of  Utah’s Mighty 5 national parks  – was.

I hiked two trails, Sulfur Creek and Cohab Canyon, that were gloriously empty. Following Sulfur Creek through slot canyons and over waterfalls was my favorite, because the 5.8-mile trek feels completely untouched by humans. No trail markers, no signs, no bathrooms, no trash cans: just you in the wild. (And preferably a guide who knows where to go. I’m a newbie hiker and wouldn’t do this solo, especially because the water level can rise as high as your chest depending on conditions.)

Stay in Torrey, UT for easy access to the park; I checked out the new Skyview Hotel on a trip last year , which is ideal for glamping under the stars. There aren’t a ton of accommodation or dining options in such a small town, but that also means there’s really no wrong choice. Wild Rabbit Cafe is a must for breakfast, and have a nice sit-down dinner at Hunt & Gather . Fun extras are a cider tasting at Etta Place and a massage at Red Sands’ spa . Your muscles will thank you after all that trekking.

2. Montana Badlands

Montana’s mountains may attract most of the state’s attention , but its eastern badlands are perfect for those looking to truly escape it all. Characterized by striking landscapes, dinosaur fossils, dark skies, and a perplexing lack of tourists, this well-kept secret will illuminate Earth’s staggering history – with hardly another visitor in sight. 

Hike through the pyramid-like mounds that punctuate the prairie in the Terry Badlands , or camp on top of the banded cliffs that make the whole area look like a painting. Just down the road, you can also wander the otherworldly hoodoos and cliffsides of Makoshika State Park , one of Montana’s hot spots for dinosaur fossils; both Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus Rex fossils have been found here, and scientists are discovering more specimens all the time. At night, the sky opens up to a flood of stars that overlook the ancient terrain; bring a telescope or a camera and scope out the wonders of the heavens.

3. Coldfoot, Alaska

Unpretentious and built for function in Alaska’s far north, the tiny community of Coldfoot delivers for people wanting to experience Alaska’s remote spaces and adventurous activities . Essential as a truck stop for drivers transiting the Dalton Highway across the Arctic Circle, visitors arrive via auto (note that most rental agencies will not allow travel along this mostly gravel road) along the highway, or by air, thanks to several small carriers out of Fairbanks , 253 miles south. 

Coldfoot sits at the base of the stunning Brooks Range and provides access to year-round recreation. From June 1 to mid-September, stop at the Arctic Interagency Visitor Center for information, maps, ranger-led presentations, and interpretive displays showing the region’s history. Coldfoot Camp can assist travelers wanting to hike or raft deeper into the Brooks Range and Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve or Arctic National Wildlife Refuge , with gear and guides provided. In the fall and winter months, Coldfoot becomes a top place to view the sweeping and colorful northern lights . Nightly tours departing from Coldfoot Camp with options to add snowshoeing or fat biking to the adventure.

4. Hovenweep National Monument, Four Corners, USA

Surrounded by high desert and stunning red rock canyons, Hovenweep National Monument is a little-visited archaeological zone in the Four Corners region, where  Arizona , New Mexico , Colorado and Utah meet. It’s a place to escape the throngs at nearby national parks and imagine what life was like long ago. The one-time home of the Ancestral Puebloans, Hovenweep is a cluster of six ancient villages built between 1200 and 1300 CE and peppered across Colorado, Utah and the Navajo Nation. Wide expanses of dirt roads and trails connect the sites, a treasure trove of teetering towers and sacred kivas perched on canyon rims. 

The largest and easiest to access is the Square Tower Group , a clutch of well-preserved structures along a 2-mile trail near the visitor center in Utah . There’s a first-come-first-served campground as well as ranger-led programming. The other archaeological sites are between 4 and 9 miles away; before heading out, ask about trail and road conditions and grab a map as GPS is unreliable and cell service almost nil. Wherever you explore, stay for the stargazing – Hovenweep is also one of the world’s rare gold-tier International Dark Sky Parks, where up to 15,000 stars can be seen on cloudless nights.

5. Superstition Mountains, Arizona

Eager hikers visiting Phoenix swarm iconic Camelback Mountain in Scottsdale to get a photo from the humpback-shaped mountain for their Instagram. The resulting crowds along the less-hiking, more-bouldering route make it one of my least favorite hiking experiences in Arizona. Break free of the crowd, and take the drive east on Hwy 60 to the Superstition Mountains . The desert dazzles in this area, with stunning saguaro cacti and views for days. 

Hieroglyphic Trail will give you a less intense hike with the payoff of seeing petroglyphs near a waterfall. More intermediate hikers will find  Fremont Saddle a delightful route. (Bring a lunch to enjoy at the top as you rest and admire sweeping views of Weavers Needles.)  Experienced hikers looking for a rugged challenge can hike and climb the boulders for a spectacular view of the region from the top of Flat Iron. The Superstitions are gorgeous but wild. Cell service in the area is scarce, and in some places you’ll need a car that can navigate unpaved roads.  Make sure to bring enough water for your trip as trailheads may not have public water dispensers. 

6. The Shenandoah Valley, Virginia

Surrounded by Virginia ’s Blue Ridge Mountains and West Virginia’s Alleghany Mountains, with the Shenandoah River flowing its entire length, this 140-mile stretch of paradise is often overshadowed by the majestic mountain ranges of the western US. But this place practically begs to be your next scenic road trip . Drive the curving roads of the Blue Ridge Parkway or Skyline Drive , or meander along wide open back roads (or follow I-81 if you’re short on time), stopping into charming, historic small towns like Staunton, Harrisonburg and Lexington for antiquing and brewery-hopping. Chill out at sprawling vineyards , pick up fresh bread from a local farm or relax under curtains of fragrant lavender at a lavender farm . Then get outside and trek a section of the Appalachian Trail found inside the state’s big and beautiful beast: Shenandoah National Park . The slogan “Virginia is for lovers” rings true in the Shenandoah Valley. Life moves enchantingly slowly, and the romance of the rolling Blue Ridge Mountains is undeniable. Oh, and once you’ve experienced your first Shenandoah sunset, you’re hooked. 

7. Bellingham, Washington

In western Washington , trees and waterfront collide for unmatched beauty. If you’re looking for a town that truly encapsulates the PNW spirit but lacks the crowds, Bellingham is for you. Nestled 30 minutes from the Canadian border, Bellingham is a quaint and idyllic oasis bursting with outdoor activities. Opt for a slight detour along Chuckunut Drive rather than I-5 to fully experience the region's beauty. Chuckanut provides excellent views of Sammish and Bellingham Bay, with tons of hikes (Oyster Dome is a favorite) and viewpoint stop-offs. 

In town, grab lunch at Mambo Italiano — the sandwiches made with in-house focaccia are unforgettable. Browse the indie bookstore, Village Books , for your next great read, and in the summer, head to their lawn on Mondays for an outdoor movie. Ride your bike along the bay or enjoy a sunset picnic along the water at Boulevard Park. You can’t visit the PNW without stopping by one of the numerous breweries in the area; it's a classic local hang. Otherlands Beer is a stellar option for top-notch brews and good vibes. And when you need a late-night snack, stop by the beloved college haunt, AB Crepes .

8. Channel Islands National Park, California

If you’re looking to get off the grid and are willing to hop on a boat, then the Channel Islands National Park is for you. Located off the coast of Southern California, between Santa Barbara and Los Angeles , this wildly wonderful archipelago carries the distinction of being one of California ’s least-visited national parks. To get there, you’ll need to take a tour with an outfit like  Island Packers , which provides two points of departure from Ventura and Oxnard. 

Five islands make up the park: San Miguel, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, Anacapa and tiny, southern Santa Barbara, which is much further south. Visiting any one of them allows you to see and experience a place that is mostly as it was for tens of thousands of years. From land and sea, behold stunning, rugged landscapes and look out for some of the 150 plant species and a few animals that are unique to the islands. If you wish to lengthen your time on the islands there are several campgrounds for overnight stays you can reserve in advance. And if you plan to visit between June and November, you can add whale-watching to your excursion.

9. Jayuya, Puerto Rico

Just a domestic flight from the mainland US, travelers heading to  Puerto Rico and searching for solitude should head to Jayuya, nestled in the Central Mountains. Here, crowds of a different kind dominate – like choirs of coqui frogs and gangs of roving roosters. Legend says native Taíno populations escaped Spanish persecution by hiding in the Central Mountains until the mid-19th century, and now, Jayuya serves as the island's Indigenous epicenter, with museums celebrating local heritage and ancient petroglyphs aplenty.

It's easy to see how Jayuya held on to its traditions. Imposing mountain peaks protect the town – including the 4398ft Cerro de Punta – and even today, the only way to get here is along razor-thin roads that twist and tumble like a roller coaster. Those who brave the journey reap major rewards: barely-trafficked hikes around Toro Negro State Forest , tiny group tours at working coffee farms like Hacienda San Pedro and jungle pools fed by waterfalls like Cascada Las Delicias. After a dip in Jayuya's chilly waters, head to La Destileria Craft Spirits for a taste of pitorro , a locally-made moonshine rum that will warm your soul.

EA Sports College Football 25 toughest place to play rankings: Who is No. 1, in top 25?

Where is the toughest place to play in EA Sports College Football 25 ?

One of the unique features of college football video games has been the home field advantage factor, where teams known to have raucous crowds made it hard for visiting teams to decide plays, call audibles or make critical mistakes. The feature will return when EA Sports College Football 25 releases in July , giving college football fans another chance to see where the most hostile crowds are, and on Tuesday, EA Sports announced where the most electric stadiums rank.

EA Sports says stats such as home winning percentage, home game attendance, active home winning streaks and team prestige, among other factors.

EA Sports College Football 25 toughest place to play

The toughest place to play in EA Sports College Football 25 is Kyle Field, home of the Texas A&M Aggies. The stadium is home to "The 12th Man" and has a capacity of 102,733, top five in college football. Texas A&M leads the 12 SEC schools to make the top 25 toughest places to play, including its new members.

CNN just named this Arizona city one of America's best towns to visit. Here's why

For many travelers, the ideal summer vacation spot offers unique character, an abundance of things to see and do, and little to no crowds.

That sentiment explains why CNN Travel compiled a new list of U.S. places where people can avoid "the elbow-to-elbow crowds of the big tourist cities." Its inaugural list of 10 cities includes one in Arizona, a popular stopover point on the way to the Grand Canyon.

CNN's list, called America's Best Towns to Visit in 2024, highlights smaller cities. Richmond, Virginia, was ranked No. 1 for its cultural and dining scenes and "intriguing" neighborhoods.

CNN's travel contributors selected the cities based on their attractions, dining, nightlife, culture, sense of identity, proximity to other interesting spots and wow factor.

New to the top 10 city for this year: a beloved restaurant chain arrived in April , and a West Coast flight from its airport is coming in the fall .

Why Flagstaff is one of CNN's America's Best Towns to Visit in 2024

Flagstaff, a northern Arizona city rich in ponderosa pine forests and overlooking the state's tallest mountain peak, is ranked No. 6 on CNN's list of America's Best Towns to Visit.

CNN's contributors gave Flagstaff high marks for its outdoor experiences, especially stargazing . They cited Flagstaff's status as an International Dark Sky City for its protection of the night sky from light pollution, as well as Lowell Observatory, the astronomy hub where Pluto was discovered in 1930.

They said the city's connection to outer space doesn't end there, with a nod to its proximity to Meteor Crater about 45 minutes east in Winslow. The natural landmark, one of The Arizona Republic's uniquely Arizona road trip destinations , preserves the site where a meteorite struck the Earth's surface about 50,000 years ago.

Flagstaff's proximity to Coconino National Forest and the San Francisco Peaks creates plentiful adventure opportunities, including skiing and snowboarding. Arizona Snowbowl at Humphreys Peak (elevation 12,633 feet), which CNN described as "ground zero for Flagstaff's winter sports scene," extended its season this year due to above-average snowfall, including its first-ever June dates .

Flagstaff is about 80 miles south of the Grand Canyon, one of America's most famous adventure spots.

Flagstaff is also a key stop on historic Route 66, where the city's historic downtown has evolved into a shopping, dining and entertainment hub.

This Maine city took 5th place in CNN Travel's America's Best Towns to Visit 2024

If you love seafood, CNN Travel has dubbed Portland the place to go this summer.

The country's lobster capital was ranked fifth on America's Best Towns to Visit 2024 , thanks to its "next-level food scene, coastal setting, and outdoor access." While the crustacean cuisine plays a big part, Portland landed its spot with not only varied culinary offerings but outdoor recreational opportunities, making it the second New England city to make CNN's list, after Providence , Rhode Island took second place.

CNN's America's Best Towns to Visit is a list meant to provide readers with smaller cities that still have a big personality. These cities may be somewhat off the beaten path, making them hidden gems for a different sort of vacation destination.

How Portland made the list

The food scene was a major part of why CNN recommended people make the trip.

What they said : "The food scene here has put it squarely on the map as a culinary destination, with two new James Beard Awards just added to the city’s collection. You’ll also find a booming craft beer scene and tons of opportunities to get out onto the water or into the woods. Strolling the bustling center offers a window onto centuries of maritime history and a Victorian-era rebirth."

In addition to food and boutique lodging, the city's historic waterfront lets visitors do some island hopping in the bay from Portland's Old Port. The six islands on the ferry come with their own attractions such as historic sites, beaches and bike paths, said writer Brandon Griggs.

The city's food scene has branched out from solely seafood to ethnic cuisine, such as Salvadoran, Vietnamese and East African food. The adventurous palates of residents and visitors have turned Portland into fertile ground for up-and-coming chefs and restaurants.

The chef of the popular Japanese eatery, Bar Futo , went from humble beginnings running a sushi cart to semifinalist this year for a James Beard Award (it's a big deal in the culinary world). Two bakeries,  ZU Bakery and  Norimoto Bakery were also honored.

What's good food without a good drink? Portland has more than two dozen breweries – more per capita than any other city in the country .

Alongside classics such as  Allagash and  Shipyard , smaller and breweries are breaking into the beer scene, such as  Belleflower , "a family-run, small-batch brewery with a broad palette of beers and an inviting taproom," wrote Griggs.

How did CNN compile the list?

CNN Travel utilized their extensive network of contributors to gather nominations for the list. Editors went through the submissions, narrowing it down to 10 based on multiple factors.

Along with evaluating each location's attractions, food and drink, nightlife and cultural scene, they looked for a strong sense of sense of identity and a "wow factor," according to the America's Best Towns to Visit homepage. Proximity to other interesting travel locations was also considered, as well as travel logistics such as lodging options and the ease of getting there and around. The cities and towns ranged in population from 50,000 residents to about 225,000.
