Who is eligible for UAE's five-year multiple-entry tourist visa and how do you apply?

The UAE began issuing five-year multiple-entry visas in 2021, giving tourists more flexibility when visiting the Emirates.

Since March, families visiting the UAE can now apply for the five-year multiple-entry visa as a group.

Before then, each family member needed to apply separately, submitting the same set of documents for each person.

The visa, announced during a Cabinet session in March 2021, encourages longer and more frequent stays in the country for anyone without a residency visa, with multiple entries and stays of up to 180 days.

Now with the latest development there is an option for a family to apply as a group, as confirmed by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security's website.

“It will help relatives travel back and forth and will also attract a lot more tourists without any connection to the UAE so there will be more footfall,” said Haider Hussain, partner at Fragomen, an immigration services company.

“This will enhance travel into the UAE and make life easier for residents and their extended family members,” he said.

“People can stay for six months at one go if they want to."

The entry permit works as a self-sponsored visa as individuals can apply for it themselves and their families directly online and do not need to apply via a travel agency, hotel or relative in the UAE.

The approval process is quick as long as the required paperwork is submitted.

Here are the details and process explained.

Who is eligible for the five-year tourist visas? What are the criteria?

The five-year multi-entry tourist visa is available to citizens of all countries. To be eligible the visitor must provide the following:

  • A recent colour personal photo with a white background for the sponsored
  • Proof of having a bank balance of $4,000 or its equivalent in foreign currencies for six months
  • A valid health insurance document approved in the UAE
  • A ticket to and from the country plus proof of place of residence (hotel / residence address)
  • Passport valid for at least six months

For each family member included the following is required:

  • Proof of a health insurance policy within the country
  • A ticket to and from the country
  • A passport valid for at least six months

“The six-month bank statement showing that the balance has never gone below $4,000 is key to even be considered,” Mr Hussain said.

“That is the main requirement that needs to be fulfilled, the other requirements are pretty standard. Applications go through scrutiny and extensive review because it is a five-year multiple-entry visa.”

How do you apply?

Applications can be made online via the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security website.

The service cannot be done at typing centres.

Applicants need to log on to the website, select smart channels and visa service then fill in the data and add the required attachments.

“Generally a week’s timeline is what we are seeing in terms of approval coming through,” Mr Hussain said.

GDRFA Dubai offers a tourist visa service that is valid for five years and allows for multiple trips, provided that the prescribed fees are paid. The visa does not require a sponsor within the country. #gdrfadubai #gdrfadubai_is_ready — GDRFA DUBAI إقامة دبي (@GDRFADUBAI) March 9, 2023

Visitors and residents can log in at https://smartservices.icp.gov.ae/ to apply.

The application process in Dubai can be done by multinational companies for employees who travel frequently for international business.

How much does it cost?

The ICP website lists costs for all emirates except Dubai as follows:

  • Application fee: Dh100
  • Issuance fee: Dh500 per person
  • Electronic services: Dh50
  • Application fee: Dh100 per person
  • Electronic services: Dh50 per transaction

Dubai costs are slight different, and listed on the GDRFA as:

  • 30-day visit visa fee: Dh300
  • 60-day visit visa fee: Dh500
  • 90-day visitor visa fee: Dh700

All charges are plus VAT at 5 per cent.

A deposit of Dh2,060 is required, plus additional fees for health insurance and for applying from within the UAE.

uae tourist visa duration of stay

Can I extend my visa when I’m still in the UAE?

The initial visa is issued with a 90-day duration of stay in the UAE in a year from the date of first entry. This can be extended once for an additional 90-day period. The maximum permitted duration of stay under this visa cannot exceed 180 days in a year.

Which authority do I approach to issue the visa?

This is a self-sponsored visa foreign citizens can apply for as long as they meet the eligibility conditions. In Dubai, you can approach a Customer Happiness Centre or an Amer Service Centre.

Companies can also issue this visa for international employees once the company registers with Dubai Tourism via their website.

An authorised typing centre, or a government service centre can help a person apply for it to ensure the eligibility criteria is met and the application is successful.

Individuals and families in other emirates can apply online.

How can companies get a five-year visa for international staff?

Dubai introduced a five-year multi-entry visa for employees of international companies based in the emirate to simplify the application and provide easy access to the city for global visitors.

Companies need to register with Dubai tourism, open a file for the company and then start filing for their employees instead of through a tourist agency. The employees will get the same five-year multi-entry visit visa but it will be via the company. This is open to those companies who have been approved.

What are the other tourist visa options?

For anyone not receiving a visa on arrival, a 30 or 90-day single entry tourist visa can be issued by a UAE-registered tourist agency. Cost is between Dh300 and Dh600.

If a tourist overstays, what is the grace period?

There is no longer a grace period for tourists who overstay their visa and fines will be implemented from the first day after it expires.

What is the fine per day for lapsed tourist visas?

Overstaying the permitted stay in the UAE under a tourist visa attracts a fine of Dh50 each day of overstay.

There is an additional fee for an exit permit that must be paid on departure by visitors who overstay.

This story was first published in November 2021 and has been updated to reflect new visa legislation.

Step 1: Airline Website: Head to the official website of your chosen airline.

Step 2: Book Your Flight: You'll typically need a confirmed flight reservation before initiating the visa application process.

Step 3: Locate Visa Application: Look for a dedicated section for visa applications. On Emirates' website, for instance, you can find this option under "Manage Booking".

Step 4: Complete the Application Form: This form will require your personal details and information about your trip, such as arrival and departure dates. Fill it out accurately and comprehensively.

Step 5: Upload Required Documents: Prepare and upload scanned copies of all the required documents, which may include your passport, a recent passport-sized photograph, and your confirmed flight ticket.

Step 6: Review and Verify: Carefully review all the information you've entered to ensure there are no errors or typos. Inaccuracies can delay your application processing.

Step 7: Pay the Visa Fee: Once everything is confirmed, proceed to pay the visa application fee. Be aware that some airlines might add a surcharge for using international credit cards for transactions in UAE Dirhams (AED).

By following these steps, you can initiate your UAE visa application process conveniently through your chosen airline. Remember to check the specific requirements and instructions on the airline's website for any variations.

Depending on the airline you apply through, you'll either receive your visa via email or upon arrival at the airport.

Apply for a UAE (Dubai) Visa through Authorised Vendors

Applying for a UAE visa through authorised vendors can be a convenient option, especially if you prefer not to handle the process yourself. Here's a breakdown of the general steps involved:

Teleport’s Expert Tip

Step 1: Choose a Vendor:

Research authorised visa vendors in your area or online. Look for reputable companies with a good track record. Consider factors like processing speed, fees, customer service reviews, and any additional services offered.

Step 2: Contact the Vendor:

Get in touch with the chosen vendor through their website, email, or phone call.

Explain your situation (nationality, purpose of visit, desired visa type) and inquire about their services.

Step 3: Gather Required Documents:

The specific documents needed will vary depending on your nationality and visa type. However, common requirements include:

  • Valid passport (with at least 6 months validity)
  • Photographs

Step 4: Complete the Application Form:

The vendor may have their own application form or use the official UAE government form. Provide accurate and complete information.

Step 5: Submit Documents and Fees:

Submit all required documents (scanned copies or originals depending on the vendor's instructions) along with the visa processing fee and any additional service charges.

Step 6: Track Your Application:

The vendor will handle the communication with the UAE immigration authorities.

Inquire about their process for tracking application status and estimated processing times.

Step 7: Visa Collection:

Upon visa approval, the vendor will inform you and arrange for visa collection (either electronically or through pick-up at their office).

Additional Tips:

  • Double-check all deadlines and ensure your documents meet validity requirements.
  • Clarify any fees upfront, including government visa fees, service charges, and potential surcharges for using specific payment methods.
  • Ask about any additional support services offered by the vendor, such as assistance with booking hotels or airport transfers.

To initiate the Dubai visa application process, Indian citizens need to provide the following essential documents:

If you're only at the airport for four hours or less, you don't need a transit visa for the UAE.

You'll only need a transit visa if you plan to leave the airport during your Emirates layover. Transit visas are available for 48 or 96 hours.

48-Hour Transit Visas

Passengers transiting through the UAE's airports can obtain a 48-hour transit visa free of charge. This visa must be applied for in advance through a UAE-based airline. It is important to note that this visa cannot be extended or renewed. Its validity lasts for 48 hours from entry into the UAE, and departure must occur within this timeframe.

To obtain a 48-hour transit visa, you must have:

  • A passport or travel document with a minimum validity of three months.
  • A photo of yourself against a white background.
  • An onward ticket booking to a third destination, different from your point of origin.

96-Hour Transit Visas

Passengers transiting through the UAE's airports can obtain a 96-hour transit visa for a fee of AED 50. Similar to the 48-hour visa, this visa must be applied for in advance through a UAE-based airline and is non-expandable and non-renewable. Its validity lasts for 96 hours from entry into the UAE, and departure must occur within this timeframe.

To obtain a 96-hour transit visa, you must have:

  • A passport or travel document with a minimum validity of six months.

Dubai Visa Application Tracking

Yes, You can extend your visa for an additional 30 days, with a maximum total stay of 120 days within a year.  The possibility of extension depends on your current visa type. Tourist visas are generally the most extendable, while others like work visas might have specific renewal procedures. You cannot extend an expired visa. It's crucial to apply before your current visa reaches its expiry date. There might be grace periods and fines associated with overstaying.

Application Process:

  • Gather Documents: You'll need your passport (original and copy), visa application form, coloured passport-sized photographs, and payment for the extension fee (around AED 1000).
  • Online: Many government websites like GDRFAD or specific Emirates Immigration Departments offer online visa extension options.
  • Agents: Authorised visa agents can assist with the application process for a fee.
  • Submit Application and Pay Fees: Once you've chosen the method, submit your application and pay the relevant fees. The fee for UAE visa extension is AED 1000.
  • Collect Your Extended Visa: Upon approval (usually within 3-5 working days), you can download your e-visa or collect your updated passport with the extension stamp depending on the application method.

Here are some common reasons why a UAE visa application may be rejected:

  • Incomplete or Inaccurate Application: Ensure thorough completion of the application form, attaching all required documentation before submission. Any inaccuracies or omissions may lead to visa refusal.
  • Past Visa Violations: Previous breaches of UAE visa regulations, such as illegal employment or visa overstay, can result in visa denial.
  • Security Concerns: Visa applications may be rejected if immigration authorities have suspicions or concerns regarding an applicant's security background.

If your previous UAE E-visa application was denied, you have the option to reapply. However, it's crucial to understand the reasons for the initial rejection and address them before submitting a new application. Review any rejection notices or communications from UAE immigration authorities for specific feedback.

To avoid another rejection, ensure that your new application is error-free and meets all requirements.

Before reapplying for a UAE E-visa, gather the necessary documents:

  • Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your planned entry date into the UAE and has two blank pages for visa stamping.
  • Provide a scanned copy of your passport's personal information page.
  • Have a credit/debit card or PayPal account ready to pay the Dubai tourist visa fees.
  • Use a current email address to receive your UAE E-visa.

When reapplying:

  • Address any issues: Correct any mistakes or deficiencies from your previous application. Make sure all required documents mentioned above are accurate and complete.
  • Provide additional information: If possible, include any extra details or documents that could strengthen your application.
  • Seek assistance if needed: If you're unsure about why your application was rejected or need guidance, consider reaching out to UAE Immigration Services for clarification or assistance before reapplying.

If your UAE e-visa application is rejected there isn't a formal process for appealing the decision. Typically, if your UAE e-visa is denied, you will receive notification outlining the reasons for the rejection. If you believe the denial occurred due to misinformation or an assessment error, you may consider reaching out to the UAE embassy or consulate for clarification and resolution.

Upon arrival at the UAE airport, it's important to follow these steps for a smooth and hassle-free experience:

  • Ensure Travel Documents are Ready: Have your passport and a valid UAE visit visa readily available for quick verification by immigration authorities. It's advisable to carry physical printouts of these documents or ensure they are easily accessible on your mobile device.
  • Understand UAE (Dubai) Regulations: Proceed to the customs area if you have items to declare or if your baggage requires inspection. Familiarise yourself with the UAE (Dubai) Customs Regulations , which offer information on various services, duty-free shopping options, and traveller facilities.
  • Follow Unaccompanied Minor Guidelines: If you are travelling as an unaccompanied minor, remain with your designated flight attendant for safety. Upon arrival, identify your assigned adult at the destination airport to ensure a secure transition.

In summary, this guide simplifies the process of obtaining a visa for Dubai. Simply follow the steps that align with your travel plans, and you'll soon be exploring the wonders of Dubai's captivating cityscape and rich culture.

What is Reciprocity?

Nonimmigrant visa applicants from certain countries*/areas of authority may be required to pay a visa issuance fee after their application is approved. These fees are based on the principle of  reciprocity:  when a foreign government imposes fees on U.S. citizens for certain types of visas, the United States will impose a reciprocal fee on citizens of that country*/area of authority for similar types of visas.

How Do I Find Out if I Have to Pay a Reciprocity Fee?

To view the Reciprocity Page for your country* of nationality, select your country*/area of authority from the list of countries on the left side menu. On the Reciprocity Page, select the Visa Classifications tab from the column on the left

Select the type of visa you have applied for, such as a B-1/B-2 (temporary visa for business or pleasure), F-1 (student visa), etc. from the drop down menu:

The reciprocity information for that country*/area of authority will display:

What does this table tell me?

Visa Classification:  The type of nonimmigrant visa you are applying for.

Fee:  The reciprocity fee, also known as the visa issuance fee, you must pay. This fee is in addition to the nonimmigrant visa application fee (MRV fee).

Number of Entries:  The number of times you may seek entry into the United States with that visa. “M” means multiple times. If there is a number, such as “One”, you may apply for entry one time with that visa.

Validity Period:  This generally means the visa is valid, or can be used, from the date it is issued until the date it expires, for travel with that visa. If your Validity Period is 60 months, your visa will be valid for 60 months from the date it is issued.

What is the Difference between the Reciprocity Fee and the Nonimmigrant Visa Application Fee?

The nonimmigrant visa application fee, also known as the MRV fee, is a nonrefundable fee paid by most applicants for U.S. visas, whether the application is approved or refused. It covers the costs associated with processing a U.S. visa application. Current nonimmigrant visa application fees can be found on our  Fees – Visa Services  webpage. (This webpage also lists the few visa categories for which application fees are not required.)

While most visa applicants are required to pay the visa application fee, the Reciprocity Fee is only charged to an approved nonimmigrant visa applicant after the visa interview.

Immigrant Visa Interviews

For Immigrant Visa interviews each U.S. Embassy or Consulate has specific instructions for their applicants. Please click here to select your designated interview location.

Civil Documents and How to Use Them

Immigrant visa applicants are required to submit certain civil documents as part of their visa application, such as birth certificates and police records. (Nonimmigrant visa applicants do not routinely need to submit civil documents as part of their visa application.) Each Reciprocity Page will provide detailed information about how to obtain these civil documents from the country* you have selected, as well as the location of the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you can apply for your visa. For more information about civil document requirements for immigrant visa cases, see  civil documents .

To view the Civil Documents for your country* of nationality, select your country*/area of authority from the drop-down menu below. On the Reciprocity Page, click on the tabs on the left to see the categories of Civil Documents and how to obtain them.

* With respect to all references to “country” or “countries” on this page, it should be noted that the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, Pub. L. No. 96-8, Section 4(b)(1), provides that “[w]whenever the laws of the United States refer or relate to foreign countries, nations, states, governments, or similar entities, such terms shall include and such laws shall apply with respect to Taiwan.” 22 U.S.C. § 3303(b) (1). Accordingly, all references to “country” or “countries” in the Visa Waiver Program authorizing legislation, Section 217 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, 8 U.S.C. 1187, are read to include Taiwan. This is consistent with the United States’ one-China policy, under which the United States has maintained unofficial relations with Taiwan since 1979.

GCC unified visa will boost travel in the region if the process of applying for them is simple, said a top aviation industry official.

“I still remember when the Schengen visa was first introduced, we saw a drop in traffic to Europe because it was so complicated to fill up and go to the embassy to get the visa," said Kamil Alawadhi, from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) speaking to Khaleej Times during a media interaction.

He added that making the travel process easier for consumers will have a positive impact. “When it is easier for passengers to process travel paperwork, the destination becomes more welcoming,” he said.

Kamil, the Regional Vice President Africa & Middle East at IATA, was speaking as part of the agency’s annual general meeting that concludes in Dubai on Tuesday.

Last month, local officials confirmed that the unified visa system will be in place before the end of the year and will be easy to access for travellers.

“By the end of this year, the whole system will be in place,” said Khalid Jasim Al Midfa of Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Authority (SCTDA). “(We) are working day and night and e-service is a vital part of it. We don’t want to complicate things for people and also maintain the same security level. It will be a very good initiative and we will see a positive outcome for regional economies.”

Positive outlook

Kamil further added that the travel outlook for the region looks upbeat especially with the announcement of the new passenger terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport . "Leisure travellers often take into account the quality of airports," he explained. "New airports are able to pinpoint and address challenges such as overcrowding or inefficiencies that older airports may face. Better customer service tends to attract encourage traffic."

In April, plans for the new Dh128 billion passenger terminal was announced at the Al Maktoum International airport, that would scale up the passenger capacity to 260 million annually. All operations at the current Dubai International (DXB) will be transferred there once it opens.

Set to be five times the size of DXB, the airport will span 70 square-km once fully operational. It will have five parallel runways and five passenger terminals housing more than 400 aircraft gates.

Experts have long predicted that smaller, more fuel efficient planes will become more popular in the future resulting in more flights and better connectivity. Earlier this year, the chief of Dubai airports Paul Griffiths had said that this is one of the reasons why the Al Maktoum airport will have 400 gates.

  • Dubai: Flights to get more expensive as airlines look to go green, say experts
  • Dubai: New Dh55-billion community with ponds, parks to be built near Al Maktoum airport
