Owner: Bacardi Ltd

Creation year: 1960

Settled near the river Deveron, on the border of the Speyside area, the Macduff distillery has been created by the Glen Deveron Distillers Ltd in 1960. First filling of Macduff new make took place on 30 June 1960. A date commonly found in books and websites is 1962. People having participated to the birth of the distillery pretend this is wrong... So I believe the staff more than the literature... It has been sold in 1964 to a private wine merchant who then sold it to Maritni and Rossi in 1972. Martini and Rossi was subsequently purchased by Bacardi in 1990. During its short history, the Macduff distillery has had several alterations, in order to test different distillation techniques. Macduff was the first of all distilleries in Scotland to experiment metal wahsbacks (corton steel), and it was also the first one to use steam to heat the stills. The stills are heated by steam coils but originally the whole pot was lagged up to the bottom of the still neck. The lagging above the floor was removed during the restoration in 1990. Further, Macduff is one of the few distilleries which have fitted after coolers to the horizontal condensers in order to optimise cooling. Macduff doubled its production between 1966 and 1968. It installed a 5th still in 1990. The single malt from the distillery is officially called "Glen Deveron", and some independent bottlers market whisky from the distillery under the name "Macduff". The malt is part of the composition of William Lawson blend.

Macduff (Glen Deveron) Distillery

No_Image_Available6.png

The Macduff Distillery Company was founded in 1962. During its history, the distillery’s official name has fluctuated between Glen Deveron and MacDuff with official bottlings mostly having been released under the former. In 1972, Glen Deveron/Macduff was acquired by William Lawson Distillers Ltd. (famous for a blend by the same name), which became part of the Martini & Rossi corporation in 1980. In 1992 the owners Martini and Rossi were gobbled up by the Bacardi Corporation. Bacardi put their subsidiary John Dewar & Sons in charge of the Macduff distillery. Dewar & Sons also controls Royal Brackla, Aberfeldy, Aultmore, and Craigellachie.

Macduff distillery

The Macduff Distillery is located in the coastal town of the same name in the Eastern Highlands, where the Deveron River flows into the North Sea.

The water for production is supplied from nearby sources such as the Gelly spring. The malt is delivered and is partially peated. It is worth mentioning the tube-shaped, horizontally arranged condensers which enable intensive copper contact. The asymmetrical arrangement of the stills is also unusual. Apart from Macduff, only Talisker has an uneven number of stills. Macduff’s malts were previously marketed as Glen Deveron and now as The Deveron.

Only the independent bottlings, which are by far the majority, appear under the original distillery name. The majority of Macduff’s malt, around 90% is said, goes into various blends. The Dewars Blends, Lauder’s and William Lawson are among the best known of these.

The Macduff Distillery Company was founded in 1960 by Marty Dyke, George Crawford, James Stirrat and Brodie Hepburn. Just two years later, the two stills become three and another three years later, four stills. In 1972 the still is sold by the Glendeveron Distillers to William Lawson Distillers. In 1990 another still is installed, the number increased to five. In 1993 Bacardi bought the Martini Rossi Group, which also includes the Macduff distillery.

Sitting on a rocky headland across the River Deveron from Banff is the fishing port of Macduff. Like Banff it also gives its name to a distillery.

Established in the early 1960s by a consortium of Glasgow-based whiskybrokers and businessmen, the distillery was designed by renowned engineer William Delme-Evans.

Originally a highly sought after component of several blends, MacDuff is comprised of two wash stills and three spirit stills, producing a delicate, relatively light and fruity whisky, full of orchard fruit, vanilla notes and honey.

Macduff Distillery (Glen Deveron)

Status: Operational

Established: 1962

Owner: Bacardi Limited

Capacity: Not supplied

Visitor Policy: Not generally accessible

Tel: Not supplied

Website: http://www.glendeveron.com

Historically the name frequently changed from Glen Deveron to MacDuff & back. The distillery is located on the far Eastern edge of Speyside but is labelled as being a “Pure Highland Single Malt”. It lies about half a mile from the Moray Firth to the east of Banff on the east bank of the River Deveron (water from which is used for cooling). The water used in the stills is drawn from the Gelly Burn spring. One of Scotland’s more recent distilleries, MacDuff was built in 1960 (completed 1962) by a consortium of local businessmen, George Crawford, Marty Dyke and Brodie Hepburn (also involved in the Deanston and Tullibardine distilleries). Production did not commence until 1963 and shortly after the number of stills was increased from two to three (in 1966) and then to four stills (in 1968). The distillery was acquired by William Lawson, producer of the eponymous blend in 1972. Lawson’s became part of Martini-Rossi in 1980, which in turn became part of Bacardi-Martini in 1992. The distillery is now part of Bacardi's subsidiary Dewar's. In 1990 a fifth still was added, making two wash stills and three spirit stills. To find an uneven number of stills is rare in Scotland where pairs of wash and spirit stills remain the norm. MacDuff is also noteworthy for being the first distillery to use a metal mash-tun. Glen Deveron/MacDuff malts are aged in ex-American whiskey casks.

Macduff distills a soft, sweet and fruity spirit that exhibits plenty of green apple and nutty notes. The new make spirit is described as having a slight oily quality. The majority of the spirit is matured in one cask type - ex-bourbon barrels sourced from the American whiskey industry. A small percentage is also matured in ex-sherry casks from Spain.

The single malt core range is released by the owners under The Deveron name. This was previously Glen Deveron , but changed in 2015. There are three age statements at 10, 12 and 18 years old. There are three further malts for travel retail at 16, 20 and 28 years old. They were first launched in 2013. You will only find this Highland single malt labelled as Macduff by independent bottlers . Companies such as Gordon & Macphail , Hunter Laing and Signatory Vintage hold good numbers of casks and regularly release bottlings.

A green apple

The Macduff distillery has a capacity of 3.4 million litres per year. It is equipped with a 6.75 tonne mash tun , which runs 26 mashes per week. Each mash is fed to one of nine stainless steel washbacks . The fermentation time is 55 hours. There are five stills - two wash stills and three spirit stills. This is unusual as stills tend to work in pairs at most distilleries, so odd numbers are rare. The quirkiness does not stop there - the stills have upwardly tilting lyne arms that have right-angled kinks in them. This was designed to fit the still room when the number was expanded.

Macduff was founded in 1960 by the Macduff Distillers Ltd . They were formed of a group of Glasgow whisky brokers including George Crawford, Marty Dyke, Brodie Hepburn and James Stirrat. The building was a functional but classic 1960s design by renowned distillery architect of the time, William Delme-Evans . It was built to take advantage of the Scottish post-war whisky boom.

A lyne arm of a copper pot still in Macduff's still house viewed from above

In 1966 the distillery was sold to Block, Grey & Block and they formed Glendeveron Distilleries . Then in 1972, it was taken over by William Lawson Distillers , who was part of the larger Martini & Rossi group. They saw it as perfect for supplying their popular blend. This was the beginning of Macduff's association with the brand.

Martini & Rossi operated Macduff for over 20 years before being bought out by Bacardi in 1993. They have owned the distillery ever since and run it via John Dewar & Sons , their Scotch whisky and spirits wing. Under Bacardi 's ownership, both the single malt brand and Lawson's blend have grown in sales considerably.

Macduff Distillery, Speyside

Macduff Distillery, Speyside

The Macduff whisky distillery , also often known as the Glen Deveron distillery (the name kept changing back and forth), was founded in 1962, which makes it one of the newest distilleries in Scotland. A Speyside distillery, whiskies produced at Macduff tend to be clean and fruity, with a fresher feel than older and more mellowed single malts. Macduff was acquired by William Lawson Distillers Ltd. in 1972, which then was made a part of Martini and Rossi in 1980, which subsequently was absorbed into the Barcadi Corporation in 1992, who are now the current owners. Barcardi place their subsidiary company John Dewar & Sons in charge of the distillery; however one might argue that Bacardi’s influence is still strongly felt, due to the distillery’s emphasis on volume whiskies needed for blends, and the short aging time needed for the few single malts produced. The Macduff distillery produces independent bottlings under its own name, as well as the Glen Deveron single malt whisky.

The macduff distillery.

 alt=

The Macduff distillery was designed by the famous Scottish architect, Charles C. Doig, and was built in a traditional style, with copper pot stills and wooden washbacks. Originally known as the Glen Deveron distillery, Macduff is based just outside Banff in Aberdeenshire.

Between 1966 and 1972, Brokers Block, Grey & Block oversaw operations at the distillery until it was acquired by William Lawson, the whisky division of Martini & Rossi.

Throughout its existence, Macduff has gradually increased its production capacity and by 1990, its Italian owners had expanded the number of stills from two to five.

In 1995, Martini merged with Bacardi and the Macduff distillery joined Dewar’s portfolio alongside other notable distilleries such as Aberfeldy, Aultmore, Craigellachie, and Royal Brackla.

Independent bottlings of the spirit produced here are often released under the name of ‘Macduff’, as opposed to the   ‘Glen Deveron’ brand which is used and legally protected by the distillery for their official bottlings.

Just 10% of the output produced at Macduff is bottled as Single Malt Whisky. The reason for this is that the majority of spirit is used as a primary ingredient in the Dewar’s and William Lawson Blends.

The whisky produced at Macduff is well received and has gained a reputation for its quality, with many whisky enthusiasts praising its smooth, sweet taste and delicate aroma.

Great single malt scotch whisky for all.

We believe that everyone should be able to buy a good quality single malt scotch. You shouldn’t need a fancy display cabinet to enjoy Scotland’s national drink. That’s what we set out to do in 1960 when we built the Macduff distillery. Our distillery was built by four entrepreneurial Scots and a practical production approach saw us introduce shell and tube condensers (where we cool the vapour back into liquid) into the first gravity-fed scotch whisky distillery allowing us to reduce costs, and our environmental impact.

The Deveron

Great scotch whisky for all.

10 year old.

Good things take time. Every bottle of our whisky will always have an age statement on it as we believe it’s the surest sign of a great quality scotch whisky.

The Deveron 10 has spent 10 years resting in oak barrels, it has a fruity complexity, with leading tasting notes of fresh green apple, smooth toffee, vanilla and creamy oak. It’s a dram to be enjoyed neat, over ice or in a long mixed drink. Check out our videos for some mixed drink inspiration.

12 YEAR OLD

The Deveron 12 year old Single Malt Scotch Whisky has spent 12 year resting in Oak barrels. Over those two years the tasting notes of the Whisky progress to creamy Vanilla, rich backed apples and a delicate spicy finish. It’s a dram to be enjoyed neat, over ice or in a long, mixed drink. The Deveron12 Whisky Macduff is our favourite. Check out our videos for some mixed drink inspiration.

Macduff is a small coastal town in the Banff and Buchan area of Aberdeenshire, situated on Banff Bay looking out to the vast Moray Firth.

Linked by the seven-arch Deveron Bridge, the town is less than a mile from its neighbour, Banff, and is known for its fishing industry heritage. The centre of town revolves around the harbour that is where freshly caught seafood can be bought from local fishmongers, traditional fish and chip shops, or tasted at bars and restaurants.

Pay a visit to the Macduff Marine Aquarium – a jewel of the town, to learn about local wildlife and come face to face with a variety of species of sea creatures that live in the steely depths of the Moray Firth. Listen in to daily talks, watch feeding shows, take part in events, and get a feel of the sea creatures at interactive sessions and much more.

Play a round or two of golf on the greens at Royal Tarlair Golf Club which boasts spectacular views out to sea and across the Bay of Cullen. Or spend a quiet morning at the Tarlair Outdoor Swimming Pool to the east of the town, offering walks, atmospheric views and flashback in time to when the pool first opened in 1931.

Or for a more relaxing holiday, why not visit the Macduff Maritime Garden , or admire the stunning views after a stroll to the top of the Hill of Doune. Head to The Platform – a former railway station turned shopping destination – for a fabulous selection of home furnishings, clothing, a delicious patisserie, fashion and lots of quirky little gifts.

MacDuff International was founded by Charles Murray, Stewart MacDuff and Edward Thomson in 1992. All three had previously worked with whisky in other companies. Charles Murray was Finance Director with Johnnie Walker and United Distillers ; Stewart MacDuff had been a Sales Director in the Far East for Whyte & Mackay ; while Edward Thomson had previously worked with White Horse and laterly at Whyte & Mackay as Regional Director.

So, all three had invaluable whisky industry experience but had left their respective companies and were looking to start their own business yet were waiting for the right opportunity. While Stewart MacDuff and Edward Thomson knew each other from their Whyte & Mackay days they only met Charles Murray in 1991. Immediately they struck a chord and it would not take long until a unique opportunity arose. Allied Domecq and Hiram Walker of Ballantine’s fame were looking to sell three brands from their stable; Lauder’s, Grand Macnish and Islay Mist.

After intense negotiations, a deal was finally struck and signed in February 1992, complete with enough stock for 6 – 8 years and contracts for new fillings and even bottling at Allied’s bottling hall. Helping to negotiate was a corporate lawyer and his top number cruncher, David Sloan. David helped in dealings with the bank and investment houses and securing the financial package. He was on secondment the first six months after the founding of MacDuff International before he was asked to join the company in a key role. David Sloan was later to become Managing Director and a minority shareholder.

Although the 3 brands had been widely distributed in the late 1800s and mid 1900s by their previous owners, by 1992 they had fallen into a state of disrepair. At the point MacDuff International acquired the brands there were effectively only a handful of live markets and distributors. The initial years of the company’s trading were extremely difficult – interest rates were high, the UK pound left the ERM and the world was in a general recession. The company weathered the storm however, and through the founders’ contacts and knowledge of the industry it quickly increased distribution and by 2000 it had traded in over 30 countries.

Ted Thomson retired from his day to day duties in 2003 although he remained a non executive director until 2011. Sadly, Stewart MacDuff passed away in 2008, just a year or so after retiring. Charles Murray retired from his executive role in 2010 but remained on as non executive Chairman until fully retiring in 2016. During the early 2000s the company continued to grow through the close, personal relationships the founders had formed, and it was now being managed by Charles and his co-directors, David Sloan and John Scott.

In 2011 a private investor purchased MacDuff International with David Sloan remaining as minority shareholder. The investors and the management team have ambitious long term plans in the knowledge that the company is not for sale and is fully financed by its owners with no involvement from financial institutions or bank debt. The company has continued its path of growth and is in the verge of breaking into the Top 5 in European Duty Free while having already broken into the Top 10 in World Duty Free.
