Concerts At Celtic Park – U2

Band: U2 Tour : Zooropa Tour Date : 7 & 8 Aug 1993

U2 play at Celtic Park

In August 1993, U2 brought the Zooropa Tour to Celtic Park for two nights, and set the place rocking.

At the time they were the biggest rock band in the world and it was an honour to have them play at Celtic.

Despite what you might think of Bono (who seems to rile up different people in different ways), you have to respect this band for what they have achieved, and Celtic Park rocked for two great nights linking Ireland to Scotland through pure music.

Q Magazine ranked this as one of the best gigs of all time! See below notes.

Concerts At Celtic Park - U2 - Kerrydale Street

In its September 1996 issue, Q Magazine (back then a very influential high-browed UK based music magazine) ran a survey to poll what have been the best gigs of all time.

U2’s concert at Celtic Park in 1993 was rated in this survey as one of the best concerts ever, and was the only entry from 1993, thus putting it as the best gig in the whole world for that year.

Another notch on the belt for Celtic Park.

Oasis’ concert at Maine Rd was ranked as the best of the decade so far (1990’s) (another bunch of Celtic fans so a nice double in some ways for Celtic).

Media Review:

Review: Zooropa

4 stars (out of 5)

By Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

U2 planned to record a new EP before launching the European leg of their ambitious Zoo TV tour in 1993, but the EP quickly turned into the full-length album Zooropa. Picking up where Achtung Baby left off, Zooropa delves heavily into U2's newfound affection for experimental music and dance clubs. While the title track marries those inclinations to the anthems of The Joshua Tree, most of the record is far more daring than its predecessor. While that occasionally means it's unfocused and meandering, it also results in a number of wonderful moments, like the quiet menace of "Daddy's Gonna Pay for Your Crashed Car," and the space-age German disco of "Lemon," the Edge's droning mantra "Numb," and the gentle, heartbroken "Stay (Faraway, So Close!)," one of U2's very best love songs. As the album winds to a close, it drifts off track, yet the best moments of Zooropa rank among U2's most inspired and rewarding music.
