Kray Walking Tour of East London: 7 Free Spots You Can See Today

London’s East End had a few significant monsters in the last few centuries: the Ratcliffe Highway murders, Jack the Ripper, and the Kray twins. All were bloody, all were brutal, and all were notorious. But the Kray twins strangely leave a legacy more like Robin Hood than the bogeyman.

Come along on a free Kray walking tour of all the East London haunts notorious because of the Kray twins – the most famous london gangsters of all time.

Kray Walking Tour: Follow Along on My Map

kray walking tour map

Take a Kray walking tour with me through Bethnal Green, now part of the London borough of Tower Hamlets. At the time of the Kray twins, this area was comprised of Bethnal Green, Poplar and Stepney, and collectively is East London .

We’re near Jack the Ripper territory here but just a bit further north and east. The Krays and the East End are synonymous, and there are still places and people here who remember them fondly, and some who remember them as monsters.

The Kray Twins: East London’s Most Notorious Residents

The Kray Twins: Ronnie Kray and Reggie Kray

Ronnie and Reggie Kray were famous London gangsters in 1950s and 1960s. They grew up in Bethnal Green, and went on to run a criminal empire that included protection rackets, gambling, armed robbery…and even murder. The Krays were known for their brutal violence and were feared by both their rivals and those who worked for them.

Despite their criminal activities, the Krays had a certain level of charm and charisma that made them popular with some members of the public, particularly those from working-class backgrounds. The legend of the Krays lives on in pop culture and in the streets we’re about to walk down.

1. Kray Walking Tour Stop 1: The Blind Beggar Pub

kray walking tour stop 1: Blind beggar pub

We’re beginning our Kray walking tour where their gangland empire effectively ended: The Blind Beggar Pub on Whitechapel Road.

On the 9th of March, 1966, George Cornell, member of the Kray’s biggest rival gang the Richardsons, was drinking in the Blind Beggar. Ronnie Kray and his associate Ian Barrie walked in and confronted the man in a verbal altercation. Barrie fired two warning shots into the ceiling, then Ronnie pulled out his gun and shot Cornell in the head. He died later in hospital.

The beef supposedly started when Cornell called Ronnie a homophobic slur. Ronnie was, in fact, gay, but not ashamed of it. Everyone knew, and he didn’t try to hide it. And he wouldn’t abide anyone bashing him or his lifestyle.

In the years that followed the murder, it took police a long time to get witnesses to testify against the Krays. Eventually some witnesses caved, though, including the barmaid that day. Ronnie was sentenced at The Old Bailey in 1969 to life in prison. He died in 1995 while still incarcerated.

Rumor is you can still see those original bullet holes, though it’s unclear if they’re the real deal or reproductions. At any rate, it’s a hauntingly good pub with a dark past. Let’s not glorify the Krays over a pint here. Instead, remember the life of George Cornell who, no matter what he was up to, didn’t deserve to die. He left behind a family, who didn’t deserve this heartache either.

2. Kray Walking Tour Stop 2: The Repton Boys Boxing Club

kray walking tour stop 2: repton boys club

The Kray twins, like many lads growing up in the East End, were keen boxers and trained here. Once they began their criminal empire, they supported the club with financial donations, and even today some Kray merchandise goes to support the club.

The building was originally a Victorian Bath House, as you can see in the stone work, but opened as a youth and boxing club in 1884, making it the oldest and first boxing club in London. The murder of Ginger Marks by Kray associate Freddie Foreman took place outside the club in 1965.

3. Kray Walking Tour Stop 3: The Carpenters Arms, Cheshire Street

kray walking tour stop 3: the carpenter's arms owned by Violet Kray

In 1963, the Kray twins purchased this pub as a gift for their mother Violet. Violet loved this pub, and would hold court on weekends to all of the twins’ friends and associates, as well as her old East End pals.

The previous owners of the pub claimed that the twins used an old coffin lid as a bar top, though it’s unclear if it’s still in use today. Google says the pub is temporarily closed and it was when I walked by; check before you head for a pint.

4. Kray Walking Tour Stop 4: William Davis Primary School

kray walking tour stop 4: William Davis primary school

The Kray twins attended primary school here when it was Wood Close School. The boys were known to get into schoolyard scraps, so it was suggested they start boxing. There are supposedly bullet holes from the murder of Ginger Marks near the school sign on Cheshire street, but I couldn’t locate them when I visited.

5. Kray Walking Tour Stop 5: The Kray’s Childhood Home, Vallance Road

kray walking tour stop 5: the Kray's childhood home Vallance Road

The Kray family lived at 178 Vallance Road, also called “Fort Vallance” by friends and associated. Charles and Violet Kray moved their family to this address when the twins were 5, and the couple later moved to Braithwaite House in Islington ( also on my map ) when the twins were grown. The original terraced houses were torn down and replaced by this block of flats in the 1980s.

Reggie later wrote of his time at the house in his autobiography Born Fighter : “ Number 178 was a lucky old house. It had a big oak door with a large knocker, and the people used to call it ‘Fort Vallance.’ It was a terraced house with a toilet out in the yard. Ron and I used to love the kitchen. We had a big coal fire and we used to sit around it while our mother used to be doing the ironing or making pots of stew or cups of tea. ”

This is a private residence. Please be respectful and mindful of privacy.

6. Kray Walking Tour Stop 6: E. Pellicci

kray walking tour stop 6: E Pellicci

The Krays met for breakfast daily in this Bethnal Green greasy spoon to go over accounts and give orders to their associates. Scenes from the Tom Hardy film Legend were also shot on location here, though in the film the green awnings are gone.

Reggie Kray later wrote in East End Stories : “ A memory popped into my head of sitting in Pellicci’s Cafe on the Bethnal Green Road savouring a coffee and talking to good friends. Does the cafe, which has been there since the turn of the century, still open its doors every day? Does pencil-moustache Nevis Pellicci still bustle around shouting orders trough to his wife Maria, or Mama as she was known? That place served the best food outside of your own mothers kitchen and it still makes my mouth water at the thought. “

7. Kray Walking Tour Stop 7: St Matthew’s Church, St. Matthew’s Row

kray walking tour stop 7: St Matthew's church

We end our Kray walking tour where the Krays ended. All three Kray brothers had their funerals here in this 1743 church: Ronnie Kray in 1995, Reggie Kray in 2000, and Charlie Kray (their older brother) also in 2000.

Each time mourners lined Cheshire Street and the processions went all the way through the East End. Google Kray funeral photos and you’ll see how beloved they were to their community. However, the Krays are not buried here, but at Chingford Mount Cemetery in Waltham.

Remembering the Kray Twins: Fear and Fame

kray twins london tour

The Kray twins leave a strange legacy, both as notorious murderers who would deck you if you looked at them, but also as gentlemen, who would pay the tab for all the little old ladies dining at Pellicci’s. They weren’t Robin Hoods, but they didn’t go down as pure evil, either.

Kray Walking Tour: Final Thoughts

I hope you learned a lot about these East End haunts on my Kray walking tour. These were men who caused a lot of terror and heartache: they killed people, they maimed people, they ruined lives. But they are also still held in high regard around these parts, and those who remember them recall both that fear and the fawning.

It’s an odd legacy, and a fascinating one. There’s a news story here from after their deaths that explores their fame in the East End.

Jamie our tour guide was friendly, relaxed and knowledgeable about the Kray Twins. Tested our knowledge on the twins and told us a few things we didn't know which obviously kept it interesting. Also told us some other interesting stories along the way round.

John was very informative. Certainly knew his stuff. The tour was very interesting. Well worth going on if you are interested in the Krays and their culture.

Our guide John was incredibly knowledgable , friendly and happy to take as many questions as we liked. Highly recommended.

Good tour, unfortunately it started to rain.

Kray Twins East London Gangsters

The Kray twins: Britain’s most infamous gangsters with a weird cult following and a load of celebrity friends. The pair ruled the streets of 1960s’ London with a network of fear and violence . Their gang business (“the Firm”) included assaults, firebombing, armed robberies and murders, hidden behind the showbiz nightclubs the twins ran in the West End.

Today the twins seem to be not just infamous but widely admired. Perhaps their most recent reincarnation as Tom Hardy in the 2015 film  Legend has something to do with it. A search for #kraytwins on Instagram brings up a load of glamorous shots of Hardy smoking, or tattoos of the twins’ faces plastered over people’s forearms.

It’s easy to walk around the small circuit of Ronnie and Reggie’s home turf in Bethnal Green, East London – their primary school and the church their funerals were held at are across street from each other.

The twins’ primary school, now called William Davis Primary School. They grew up at nearby 178 Vallance Road (now demolished).

Repton Boys Club

The boxing club where the twins trained as lightweight boxers, just a bit further down Cheshire Street from their primary school. They’d turned professional by the time they were teenagers, but this career path came to an abrupt end when they were dishonourably discharged from National Service. After punching a corporal they spent the next six months in prison instead, assaulting guards and meeting new criminal contacts. They were also some of the last people to be held in the Tower of London.

On the corner of Cheshire Street next to their old primary school. The twins bought this pub for their beloved mum Violet in 1967. Rumour has it that when the Krays were in charge they had the bar counter made from a coffin lid.

This Italian cafe on Bethnal Green Road was one of the twins’ favourite meeting places, and they’d been going there since they were kids. It also appears in Legend .

The Blind Beggar

The pub where Ronnie killed George Cornell in 1966, a member of the rival Richardson Gang (their gang activities included nailing people to the floor). Apparently George’s last words were “well, look what the dog’s brought in”, before Ronnie shot him in the head at close range. Despite the amount of people who saw it happen no one was willing to testify against him. Ronnie eventually received life imprisonment for the murder, while Reggie went down for stabbing Jack McVitie to death in 1967.

© Simon Montgomery

Being behind bars wasn’t going to stop the Kray empire – despite being in different prisons the twins began running a celebrity bodyguard business (Frank Sinatra hired 18 men from them).

St. Matthew’s Church

Ronnie died in prison in 1995, and Reggie was released just before he died of cancer in 2000. Both their funerals were held in this church opposite their primary school. Barbara Windsor and Morrissey are said to have sent wreaths.

Chingford Mount Cemetery

© Simon Montgomery

The twins’ graves can be found at this suburban East London cemetery. Whilst we visited three other groups of people turned up, some taking drive-by shots from their cars, others attempting to explain the legend of the Krays to their baffled kids.

Reggie’s first wife Frances Kray is buried here too; after an abusive relationship and eight months of marriage to Reggie she committed suicide when she was 23. Her family tried to have her re-buried under her maiden name Shea (which she’d reverted back to) but Reggie wasn’t having any of it. She lies there in the Kray family plot, a truer symbol of the Krays’ legacy than anything you’ll see on Instagram.

© Simon Montgomery

How to get there

  • The nearest tube station is Bethnal Green – exit and walk up Bethnal Green Road
  • The first location you’ll see is Pellicci’s cafe on the left. From there carry on up the road and take a left St. Matthew’s Row to see St. Matthew’s Church
  • Further down on the corner of St. Matthew’s Row you’ll find The Carpenters Arms
  • Take another left at The Carpenters Arms towards William Davis Primary School and Repton Boys Club
  • The Blind Beggar pub is less than 15 minutes’ walk from Repton Boys Club, close to Whitechapel tube station

Walking tours around Bethnal Green/Whitechapel are available but you’ll have to make a separate trip to Chingford Mount Cemetery to see the graves. Both Chingford and Highams Park overground stations are about half an hour’s walk from the cemetery.

In Jeff Nichols' beautiful Austin Butler drama "The Bikeriders," Hardy plays Johnny, leader of Chicago motorcycle club the Vandals — and this being a midwestern biker movie, you better believe there's yet another weirdo Hardy accent involved . Speaking to Variety about the film, the British star said, "One of the things that I hold myself to, as a principle, is that you've got to make an effort to create a vocal silhouette, as well as the physical silhouette." In "The Bikeriders" it's not just Hardy that provides an intriguing vocal silhouette (Jodie Comer affects a captivating mix of Chicago and Wisconsin accents), but he surely has the most unconventional and endearingly idiosyncratic take on the midwestern accent.

Of course, this is hardly the first time Mr. Hardy has treated us all to a unique vocal performance. The man who befuddled audiences the world over with his posh guerilla fighter Bane in "The Dark Knight Rises" has always delivered when it comes to his characters' voices — to the extent that, much like his "Rises" co-star Christian Bale, nobody is really sure what the man is supposed to sound like out of character any more.

With the arrival of yet another unique Hardy vocal performance, it's high time we took stock of the many voices the British actor has given us over the course of his career and decide once and for all which is the weirdest. It should be said that this is far from an exhaustive list — Hardy has crafted a fair few "vocal silhouettes" in his time. But the examples listed below are undeniably the strangest, and perhaps even the best.

Forrest Bondurant (Lawless)

One of the most fascinating parts of Tom Hardy's approach to accents is that he has absolutely no problem vacillating between perfect enunciation and unintelligible slurring, even while playing the same character. In "Lawless," he plays bootlegging Virginian Forrest Bondurant, and Hardy's studied performance is notable for the way in which he doesn't really need to say anything to project an intimidating aura. Of course, he does say quite a bit, and much of it demonstrates his predilection for switching up his characters' ability to actually say words properly.

If you can understand what on earth this line was supposed to be before Hardy mangled it, you're a better man than I. But just a few seconds earlier, he demonstrates a much sharper, more clearly-defined accent when calling out the mugger threatening his brother. Hardy also seemed to embrace a Jon Bernthal-esque penchant for refusing to look at whoever he's talking to in this film, but that's not what we're here to talk about.

Instead, let's discuss how, at various points throughout "Lawless," Hardy is aided in his vocal silhouette work by a toothpick, which the actor clearly delights in rolling across his teeth as he interacts with his various scene partners. Frankly, the best parts are when Forrest isn't doing much at all, such as when a be-cardiganed Hardy sits on a porch and gazes off into the distance, wistful yet world-weary, as his brother beats up a couple of local coppers. Much like James Stewart in "Rear Window," Hardy does an excellent job of doing nothing well . Meanwhile, his accent remains like so many Hardy voices — convincing at times, silly at others, yet always compelling.

Ronald And Reggie Kray (Legend)

Since his breakout role in Nicolas Winding Refn's 2008 film "Bronson," Tom Hardy has displayed an affinity for playing gangsters, which he's turned into a career-long character study. In 2015's "Legend" Hardy plays London's infamous Kray twins, Ronnie and Reggie. That means we got two Hardy accents for the price of one, and both of them were lovably weird in a way only the British actor can pull off.

The gangster twins provide Hardy with a unique opportunity to affect two accents that are similar yet very different. As Reggie, the actor almost sounds like a teen, with a high pitched cockney accent that sets him apart from Ron's more baritone intonation. Interestingly enough, there are traces of Bane's rasp in Ron's accent, for which Hardy takes on an oddly restrained tone that sounds as though Michael Cain suffered a nasty hit to the head and contracted a cold in the process. Ron sounds perpetually stuffed-up, while his brother speaks in a much looser high pitch that sounds as though David-Beckham became the head of a London crime syndicate.

Brian Helgeland's movie was a slick production, but there's no doubt Hardy is the real draw here. There's also no doubt that the accents are doing a lot of the heavy lifting in "Legend." Whereas Hardy has proven he can, in the words of Hitchcock, "do nothing well" (see the aforementioned "Lawless"), here his vocal talents are on full display.

Alfie Solomons (Peaky Blinders)

Yet another example of Tom Hardy switching from garbled nonsense to perfectly enunciation while playing the same character, Alfie Solomons is one of his most enduringly compelling vocal performances. The leader of a Camden Town-based Jewish gang, Alfie can be seen stealing almost every scene he's in, mostly due to the fact Hardy is clearly having the time of his life spitting over-the-top cockney-isms at his co-stars.

Hardy took an unusual approach to his "Peaky Blinders" character , in that, according to director Colm McCarthy, he viewed Alfie as a "bear." Just what that means, we're not sure, but it certainly made for a classic Hardy accent. Alfie's voice is pitched somewhere between Bob Hoskins' Harold Shand in "The Long Good Friday" and Phil Mitchell (for our U.S. readers, that's this guy ).

As with so many Hardy characters, Alfie can be simultaneously endearing and terrifying. While the actor might overdo the cockney accent at times, it only serves to make Alfie more compelling. Why is he suddenly able to enunciate so clearly at times? Who knows, but rather than undermine the authenticity of Hardy's performance, it makes Alfie seem like he might be a lot smarter than he sometimes lets on, adding layers to his character and making for one of Hardy's best vocal performances.

John Fitzgerald (The Revenant)

Alejandro G. Iñárritu's epic 2015 Western drama might have earned Leonardo DiCaprio his first Oscar, but it's just as noteworthy for giving us a Tom Hardy accent that oscillated between Sam Elliot in his 2000 Super Bowl commercial and a bedraggled Forrest Gump.

Hardy plays fur trapper John Fitzgerald, who after Leo's Hugh Glass is almost mauled to death by a bear, reveals himself to be an even nastier piece of work than his racist ramblings suggested. Fitzgerald tries to convince the rest of his group to mercy kill Glass, but even after they decide against it, he tries to smother Glass to death.

In all, then, a pretty meaty villain role for Hardy, who once again enveloped himself in the character. Of course, that meant designing a suitably idiosyncratic accent, and John Fitzgerald did not disappoint on that front. His accent is southern, but from which area does the villainous fur trapper hail? That, like so many of Hardy's vocal choices, remains a mystery. Needless to say that Fitzgerald's voice is suitably fried in a way that conveys a lifetime of struggle and hardship. As such, "The Revenant" is easily one of the best Tom Hardy movies .

Max Rockatansky (Mad Max: Fury Road)

There's a reason "Mad Max: Fury Road" won six Oscars and is still considered one of the best movies in the "Mad Max" saga . That reason isn't necessarily Tom Hardy's accent, but that also doesn't mean this particular "vocal silhouette" isn't one of the finest the man ever crafted.

Hardy doesn't say much in "Mad Max: Fury Road," but when his character does speak, it's yet another treat for aficionados of the man's ever-changing vocal tone. Again, Hardy doesn't need to speak in order to maintain his on-screen presence, and "Fury Road" is another example of his effortless magnetism. But for those who love a needlessly complex Hardy accent, Max Rockatansky doesn't disappoint.

Let's begin with the impressive vocal fry Hardy affects here. I'm not sure if director George Miller EQd the actor's voice to play up his marbly rasp, but just listen to the man say the word "Alright"  here . That is a smooth sizzle. What's more, Hardy took stepping into Mel Gibson's shoes seriously enough not to concentrate too much on trying to emulate the former franchise star's performance. But at times, his accent belies a creeping desire to evoke the ghost of Gibson, with Hardy often sounding similar to the Aussie star. Other times, however, he sounds nothing like the erstwhile franchise lead, channeling what appears to be a South African inflection, and often just settling for a straight up British accent. It certainly wasn't enough to undermine the film, but it was, at times, a distracting element in an otherwise outstanding movie.

Eddie Brock/Venom (Venom And Venom: Let There Be Carnage)

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Tom Hardy has been asked about his accent quite a bit. In a Wired autocomplete interview, he was asked "What is Tom Hardy's accent," to which he replied:

"It's a collage of places, people, feelings, it's irrelevant. If you understand me that's all that matters. It's a hybrid of wish fulfillment and shame. I think I'm bourgeois, middle class, posh, middle class t**t really. And I affect it with all kinds of interesting variants, to make myself seem interesting."

That might serve as somewhat of an explanation for why Hardy's Eddie Brock in 2018's "Venom" and 2021's "Venom: Let There Be Carnage" appears to be a San Franciscian with a Queens accent. Hardy loves doing a squeaky "aw shucks" American accent, which was on full display when he co-starred with the late James Gandolfini in 2014's Brooklyn-based crime drama "The Drop." But in keeping with his "collage of places, people, and feelings" approach, Hardy also voices the titular alien symbiote in "Venom," for which he adopts a much more powerful tone, sort of like if you ran a disgruntled James Earl Jones through a vocal distortion effect.

In spite of this erratic display, as we at /Film said in our original "Venom" review , "Tom Hardy and his squirrelly American accent are oddly delightful to watch here." If "Venom 3" does, as the trailer suggests, make Marvel's multiverse more confusing , at least Hardy's baffling accent will have primed us for yet more bewilderment.

Bane (The Dark Knight Rises)

The Tom Hardy accent that still reigns supreme as the most outlandish is, of course, his Bane voice. Hardy based Bane's voice on a real-life legend — a bare-knuckle brawler named Bartley Gorman. You can hear a bit of Bartley in this documentary clip , and decide for yourself how much Hardy took from the so-called "King of the Gypsies." But there's no doubt the actor infused his "vocal silhouette" with uniquely Hardey-esque flourishes.

There are too many quotables to choose from when it comes to Hardy's Bane, from his infamous taunting of a nearly-broken Batman, "Ah, you think darkness is your ally," to his questioning of Ben Mendelsohn's Roland Daggett, "Do you feel in charge?" For me, though, it's Hardy's delivery of the line "Ah yes! I was wondering what would break first — your spirit... or your body." The nonchalance with which he raises his pitch for the "Ah yes" and calmly continues his observation is simultaneously ridiculous and chilling. He sounds like my grandad deciding between cardigans in the morning, yet somehow remains as imposing as any on-screen villain ever has.

While most of the commentary surrounding Hardy's Bane accent is good-natured teasing, there was one major issue with the whole thing. Namely, we couldn't hear a darn word the man was saying half the time. Much of this was down to the fact that he spent almost the entire film hidden behind a sizable mask — an issue exacerbated by the vocal filtering Christopher Nolan added to the villain's lines in post. But there's no doubt his idiosyncratic phrasing and inflections make Hardy's Bane a difficult man to understand. That said, it's also these very elements that made the character one of the actor's most memorable.

Travis Kelce smiled as Taylor Swift sang the proposal lyrics to 'Love Story' during the Eras Tour stop in London.

Travis Kelce even appeared to blush as Taylor Swift sang about an engagement in "Love Story" during the first show of the Eras Tour in London on Friday.

In a video circulating on social media, the NFL star can be seen dancing to his girlfriend's hit song and flashing a smile as he sings, "He knelt down on the floor and pulled out a ring / And said, "Marry me Juliet / You'll never have to be alone."

Rumours spread on social media

Fans were caught up in his boyish grin, which got them excited about the possibility of an engagement in the future.

"What if he came out on stage during that song and proposed to her?" one fan wondered on TikTok.

Another wrote: "I mean, his smile, the song, the whole gang being there, all I'm saying is it wouldn't be a bad time."

"It's probably my imagination, but. It really looks like Travis is flashing a sly little smile when he sings about getting down on one knee and pulling out a ring," commented one X user.

"She's seen so many women proposed to at her concerts, what if he came out on stage during that song and proposed to her?" questioned a TikTok fan.

"I mean, his smile, the song, the whole gang being there, all I'm saying is it wouldn't be a bad moment," hinted a third.

However, a source told Page Six that this year he could make the proposal around their first anniversary in July.

First anniversary of courtship will be key

While the Kansas City Chiefs tight end has remained tight-lipped about any engagement plans, a person close to the couple told Page Six earlier this year that they had "discussed" getting engaged around their first anniversary in July.

"Scott was asked for his blessing and gave it wholeheartedly, and Travis has been talking to friends about a ring," another source said last December
