Mobile Alabama Tours: Trolley, Walking, Bus, Boat Or Hop On Hop Off

What kind of tours and where can I find information about tours in the Mobile, Alabama area?

The Mobile, Alabama area has vast selection of tours from bus, walking, boat, trolley or a hop on hop off tour for your group or family.  Either on land or on the water checking out the history of Mobile where four flags have flown over the city or finding out about the ecosystem on the delta, find what you need here.

Here you will find a detailed listing of all the tours, locations and details and how you can get involved in finding out about the history and the surrounding water ecosystem of the

Airboat Express

Tour the Mobile delta with an exhilarating ride on an airboat.  These boats will seat up to six persons and depart from the Original Oyster House restaurant on the Causeway in the Spanish Fort area.

Tour guides will take you on an excursion to see the wildlife in the Mobile-Tensaw Delta area.  These flat bottom, air powered boats allow the guides to take you where normal boats can’t go.

Reservations and a four person minimum is required for each tour.  This company has an excellent safety record and fully insured.

Airboat Express offers four touring options:

  • One Hour Eco Tour – tour guide will show off the local plants, trees, flowers, birds and yes, the alligators.  A highly educational tour for anyone interested in learning about the native, natural wildlife of the Mobile Delta and photographers.
  • Half Hour Fun Run – This tour is all out!  An ½ hour of fast turns and wild rides. You’ll still get a peek at the alligators, but fast enough not to get caught by them.
  • One Hour Sunset Tour  – Perfect for photographer’s.  Just like the One Hour Eco Tour, but at sunset at 7pm during the summer months.  This however requires a minimum of 6 passengers.
  • Half Hour Night Tour – Also called the “Alligator Adventure” because this is the time you’ll be guaranteed to see some big ones!  Alligators feed at night, so open water is the best place to see them. You’ll see their eyes light up at night. However, this tour is extremely seasonal and is dependent on the weather, temperature and wind conditions.  So, call in first to see if it’s available.

Tours are held between 10am and 4pm in the Spring and Fall months.  Summer times are 8am to 11am (it’s hot here). Sunset and Night tours vary, so call for details.  Night tours start 30 minutes before sunset.

Pricing is as follows:

Taxes are not included and children pricing is based on 12 years old or younger.  Cancellation requires a 48 hour time frame. All cancellations after 48 hours will be charged full price.

They are closed from November 15th to February 1st each year.  It is recommended that you make your reservations 24 hours in advance.  Groups smaller than the recommended per each tour above will be combined with other groups when available.

An online shop is available to purchase T-shirts and gift souvenirs and gift cards are available online.

Contact Airboat Express at 251-370-7089 or visit the website for additional details .

Visit to Ft. Conde

Mobile was originally founded by Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville in 1702 as Fort Louis de la Mobile at 27-Mile Bluff. After the Mobile River flooded and damaged the fort, Mobile was relocated in 1711 to the current site. A temporary wooden stockade fort was constructed, also named Fort Louis after the old fort up river. In 1723, construction of a new brick fort with a stone foundation began, renamed later as Fort Condé in honor of Louis Henri de Bourbon, duc de Bourbon and prince de Condé.

The Fort guarded Mobile and its citizens for almost 100 years, from 1723-1820. The fort had been built by the French to defend against British or Spanish attack on the strategic location of Mobile and its Bay as a port to the Gulf of Mexico, on the easternmost part of the French Louisiana colony. The strategic importance of Mobile and Fort Condé was significant: the fort protected access into the strategic region between the Mississippi River and the Atlantic colonies along the Alabama River and Tombigbee River.

Travel the road to freedom, from the last slave ship to Dr. Martin Luther King.

Begin this tour in Mobile and take a driving tour of Africatown, still home to a community of descendants of Clotilde, the last slave ship to arrive in America. After emancipation, the former slaves returned from various plantations, bought land and formed Africatown, ruling it according to customary African laws and speaking their own regional language. Tour the Museum of Mobile, a National Historic landmark built in 1857, which contains the rich history of Native American, Colonial, African-American and Antebellum influences on the 300 year old city. Also visit the National African-American Archives Museum which houses many artifacts and special collections that reflect the Black history of Alabama’s oldest city.

Highlights include:

  • A driving tour includes several churches of historic interest and Africatown, so named because it was the settlement of the Africans brought to Mobile on the “Clotilde”-America’s last slave ship that came in 1859.
  • Museum of Mobile, a National Historic landmark built in 1857, contains the rich history of Native American, Colonial, African-American and Antebellum influences on this 300 year old city.

New Experiences In Mobile, Alabama Everyone Should Have On Their List

The coastal Alabama town is not what you remember.

Where To Stay

Where to eat, things to do.

Westend61/Getty Images

There are a lot of ways to get to Mobile : flying into the international airport, driving in on I-10 or I-65 from all over the South, or even sailing in on a Carnival cruise ship (Mobile is the cruise line’s homeport). And as the song lyrics go, it doesn't matter how you get here, just get here if you can.

That’s because in the last year or two, Mobile has seen a resurgence of sorts, so much so that even if you’ve partied in the Home of Mardi Gras or counted down to the New Year alongside Mobile’s 600-pound electric MoonPie drop, you’ll find a fresh repertoire of restaurants, activities, and places to stay.

Here’s what’s new in Mobile and how to make the most of your time on your next visit to Sweet Home Alabama.

The Admiral Hotel

Be one of the first to stay at The Admiral, where hometown boy Jimmy Buffet used to play for tips. Built in 1940, it is on the verge of finishing a massive remodel, with guest rooms already complete and booking up fast.

Stay in a modern and quirky room embellished with purple and yellow accents that make every day feel like Mardi Gras. Whimsical touches like a portrait of a zebra dripping its stripes and a brass bulldog crouched on his haunches set these rooms apart from the standard.

The Admiral is just steps away from the bustling Entertainment District filled with restaurants, bars, and history. But before you head out to sample them all, make a reservation at Le Moyne’s Chophouse , the hotel’s premiere dining spot set to debut in late spring. Indulge in oysters, beef tartare, and beef carpaccio flavored with herbs from The Admiral’s rooftop garden.

Bienville Bites Food Tour

Visit Mobile

Mobile has a burgeoning food and beverage scene appealing to a wide variety of tastes. The best way to sample before committing to a full meal is to join a Bienville Bites Food Tour that takes you through Downtown Mobile’s Lower Dauphin Street Historic District (LoDa).

Launched in 2017 by Chris and Laney Andrews, who just added a curated gift shop so you can take a piece of Mobile home with you, this food tour introduces you to the city’s classic establishments and the new kids on the block. Aside from eating some of the best dishes in Mobile, you’ll learn about the architecture, history, and local culture that make Mobile unique.

Dropout Bakery & Company

Dropout Bakery & Cafe

Make sure your day begins on a sweet note at Dropout Bakery & Company, launched just two years ago after owner Lacey Evans dropped out of fashion school, baked her way through COVID, and went viral on Instagram with posts of her culinary creations. There’s usually a line out the door, so grab a coffee, gaze into the glass case of confections, and take your pick. You really can’t go wrong.

theforumcollectives.com , 358 St. Louis Street, Mobile, AL 36602

Penton's Bistro and the King Bleu Corner Bar

The just-opened Penton’s Bistro and the King Bleu Corner Bar already has the locals talking, and you can be one of the first visitors to check it out. Lunch is casual —think po'boy and pasta salad—and dinner fancies it up with menu items like duck cassolette and potato gnocchi short rib ragu.

mobile.org/listing/pentons-bistro-%26-the-king-bleu-corner-bar, 219 Conti Street, Mobile, AL 36601

What happens when you turn an old Crystal Ice manufacturing plant into an even cooler massive bar? Everyone gets hungry, so you introduce the Velvet Pig, a Southern-style, whole-hog butchery that focuses on local ingredients to make its pork belly skewers and boudin egg rolls, among others. Opened at the end of 2023, it’s found a home in Mobile, and its Alabama HOT Fried Chicken Sandwich has already won hearts.

velvetpiggy.com , 755 Monroe Street, Mobile, AL 36602

After years in development, Mobile’s first outdoor food court concept, Box Owt, has opened with a unique twist—all of the restaurants make their home in shipping containers. Four eateries are currently open, with more debuting in the coming months.

For families looking to pare down the cost of dining, options in Box Owt are affordable and surprisingly diverse. Make the kids happy with the ultimate comfort food at Mac & Cheesery, or take your more mature palate on an adventure at Las Catrachas, serving authentic Honduran food.

Visit Africatown Heritage House

Africatown Heritage House Museum

You simply can’t travel to Mobile without a visit to the new Africatown Heritage House. At once painfully real and inspiringly hopeful, the museum documents the 1860 arrival of 110 Africans taken from their homes and transported in the hull of the ship Clotilda. Upon arrival, they were sold as enslaved people, a full 52 years after slavery had been officially abolished.

To cover their tracks, the men behind this crime burned the ship in the Mobile River. That ship was discovered on the river floor in 2019, confirming the terrible crime. But the mission of Africatown Heritage House isn’t only educating visitors about the events—it’s also about the resilience and hope that came years later, when the enslaved were made free and established their own thriving community, Africatown. It’s a don’t-miss on your tour of Mobile.

Mobile charging, this new mack md electric is a mobile ev charging station.

Avatar for Jo Borrás

The benefits of fleet electrification are well-known, but the question of feasibility is still very real in the minds of many heavy fleet managers. To help fleets understand how electric trucks can fit into their operations, Mack Trucks is offering a mobile off-grid charging system.

Mack made the announcement earlier this week at the American Trucking Associations Technology and Maintenance Council Annual Meeting , where they showed off renderings of a Mack MD Electric carrying a “renewable propane” powered generator and 120 kW charger. While somewhat clunky as a concept, it should do a reasonable enough job of pretending to be permanent infrastructure to give a fleet manager a sense of whether or not an electric solution will work for them.

“This system will allow the customer or dealer to charge trucks – whether it’s a demo unit or a multi-unit ride-and-drive event at the dealer – without having charging infrastructure readily available at their site,” says Ryan Saba, energy solutions manager for Mack Trucks. “Mack hopes that this option will help customers more easily experience the benefits of e-mobility and a more sustainable transportation option.”

Given the high demand for Mack’s MD range , it’s almost too bad that the system is mounted to a Mack MD Electric, as that’s the truck most likely to convince operators that the electric semi truck is more than ready for prime time!

To wit, the MD Electric be configured as a Class 6 or Class 7 truck, features a three-phase 260 hp motor powered by a massive 240 kWh Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) Oxide lithium-ion battery pack good for up to 230 miles of range.

The MD Electric is the second electric truck Mack has put into production , following the Mack LR Electric Class 8 refuse truck that’s been in series production since 2021 (with pilot programs dating back to 2019).

Electrek’s Take

There’s two types of sustainability that we talk about in the commercial space. Sustainability the first is whether or not the company will continue to do business and operate in a profitable manner, and sustainability the second is whether or not the company will continue to have a planet to do business on.

Regardless of which type of sustainability we’re talking about, it’s worries about that first kind that keep fleet managers awake at night. Mack’s new mobile charging infrastructure will go a long way toward helping them understand how electric vehicles can fit into their everyday jobs – and that means they’ll be one step closer to adoption.

Goodman: One last ride for Birmingham-Southern baseball

______________________

They flew to Cleveland for the Division III Baseball World Series, but the baseball team without a school took a bus back to Alabama.

It’s not that the NCAA wouldn’t pay for the flights after Birmingham-Southern College closed last Friday. Coach Jan Weisberg just wanted one more day with his guys.

So did everyone else, including fans from around the country who began following Birmingham-Southern when the Panthers advanced to the super regional stage of the Division III national baseball tournament.

Thanks to the baseball team’s unexpected postseason success, the circumstances surrounding Birmingham-Southern College found a national audience over the final days of the school’s existence. Tracing its roots back to 1858, Birmingham-Southern officially closed on May 31. On the very same day, its baseball team played their first game of the D-III Baseball World Series at Classic Park in Eastlake, Ohio.

It was like watching a school celebrate at its own wake.

A large collection of BSC alumni and supporters made the trip, as well. They needed to bear witness. They needed to send off their school. They turned out and turned up, saluting their team and school one last time.

Birmingham-Southern then played games elimination games on June 1 and June 2 after its school was history. Birmingham-Southern lost its first game on this past Friday, but then won with a walk-off home run by Jackson Webster on Saturday.

He called it a baseball miracle . It was somehow even more than that, though. In that moment, a team playing for a school that no longer existed experienced baseball heaven.

The Panthers can always say they went down swinging.

On Sunday, Birmingham-Southern’s players put on their uniforms for what would be the final time. One day after winning on a walk-off homer against Randolph-Macon, the Panthers were eliminated from the World Series on a walk-off home run by Sam Paden of the University Wisconsin-Whitewater.

On the very first pitch to begin the bottom of the ninth.

In an instant, it was over.

“I’m sure in the next couple days there will be a lot of crying,” Weisberg said in his opening remarks after the game. “Even as I visit with alums, maybe, but I really don’t feel sadness right now and I mean it. The ride that these guys have given me this year has been absolutely incredible.

“You know, coaching is what I love. It is extremely fun. These guys have made it so fun. It was a poignant moment in the locker room.”

After celebrating Birmingham-Southern and its final moments with families, alums and his players, Weisberg then decided the team needed one more journey together before everyone returned to Alabama and set out on their different paths.

To preserve their time together and make it as memorable as possible for the players, Weisberg canceled his team’s flights through the NCAA and instead rented a bus for his Panthers one more time.

Just like old times.

One last ride for Birmingham-Southern.

It’s the way Birmingham-Southern baseball needed to go out after a postseason together that inspired so much pride in their school during its final hours.

The circumstances that illuminated and elevated the spirit of this Birmingham-Southern baseball team were not the best, but the powerful message of togetherness and love that the Panthers shared during an expected run to the D-III World Series underscored the value of collegiate athletics and the great potential of these games.

There are no scholarships in Division III of the NCAA. It’s all for the love of the game and the pursuit of something greater than individual success.

There’s something to take away from the last days of the Birmingham-Southern baseball team. It wasn’t about money. It wasn’t even about winning. It was about appreciating every last moment and living in the present like there is no tomorrow.
