You could have rebooked my direct flight to another direct flight instead of sending me though JFK, the worst US airport after O’Hara You could have rebooked me on a Main Cabin seat (like the one I paid for in my original ticket instead of putting me a the last row on JFK->BOS leg, pocketing the difference in ticket price But I do not really care whether you will ever do that in a future because in a future neither I nor anyone from my company (unless they pay out of pocket) nor an of my clients and partners (if they heed my advice) will ever be caught dead on any of Delta flights

I am writing to express my extreme dissatisfaction with the recent flight experience I had with your airline. This has been one of the worst travel experiences I have ever encountered, and I feel compelled to bring it to your attention. Firstly, I missed my flight due to what I perceive to be a lack of clear communication and coordination on the part of your staff. There was no remorse or apology from the airline's representatives, which further exacerbated the situation. As a result of missing my flight, I was subjected to a 24-hour delay at the airport, where I had to spend a significant amount of money to rent a hotel room and cover other incidental expenses. Additionally, since my baggage was already checked in from Tanzania to Turkey, I had to purchase essential items for the 24-hour period. What truly dismayed me, however, was the discourteous and unprofessional attitude of your staff. Their lack of empathy and understanding only added to the stress and inconvenience of the situation. I have been traveling abroad for over 20 years, and I can confidently say that this experience has been the worst I have ever encountered. As a result, I am compelled to reconsider ever using your airline again for future travel. I strongly urge you to address the issues I have raised and take immediate steps to rectify the situation. Additionally, I expect a formal apology and a refund for the expenses I incurred due to the airline's negligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter, and I look forward to your prompt response.

I’m unclear why I had to pay extra for assigned seats as Turkish airlines did not honor the seating. We were placed across the aisle from each other on TK 34, and were seated behind one another on TK 694. Because my name was misspelled on e-ticket (Klawiter, instead of Klawitter) I could not log onto website to get the connection gate number in Istanbul. The monitors in the airport were a jumbled mess 1/2 Arabic and 1/2 English.

On line check in needs a lot of improvement. I tried and gave up.

Food not good, flight attendants not the best, not accommodating very ruff

Again, entertainment system didn't work. 50% of aircraft don't seem to have a functional entertainment system and the crew is absolutely uninterested in fixing. They just say Addis needs to fix it. Well, Addis had better get off it's butt and fix their aircraft.

Boarding was mayhem. Entertainment system wasn't operational. Food was poor. It was like flying in the 1990's. For the price of the ticket, this was not value for money. It felt much more like an extreme discount airline.

Choice of Vegetarian Food in Economy class needs overhaul improvement

The gate was changed at the very last moment and no one informed us. The flight was one hour late and the screen broken, the remote control not working. One toilet was out of order . the other toilets were also not totally functioning, because the washbasin was plugged and the water couldn't flow away.

The food could be better, the beef was quite tough. The crew were friendly and helpful on this flight, which has not being my experience on other Ethiopian flights.

The crew were extremely unfriendly. The plane was dirty and the entertainment system did not work, so they did not even give out earphones to anyone.

Luggage delayed for one day. I called customer service, and they had no info and no empathy. Boarding was very disorganized and chaotic. We went nearly 7 hours with no food or snacks on the flight. This is not an airline that has respect for its passengers.

The entertainment (movies) blockbuster and classics never change. I am a frequent Ethiopian flyer and this should be addressed. Not much changed from my summer flight and my December flight. It is annoying - surely you can update the selections more often. Same with food options. It becomes extremely boring to be offered the same exact meals from Washington to Addis to Maputo every trip, each time. AS

Dinner was excellent - beef stew, the eggs for breakfast were only ok. It was soooo nice that there were so many options for movies and games.

Captain waited 45 minutes for late passengers boarding from Washington DC to Munich which was nice for them but caused our luggage to miss boarding our connection on to Bucharest. We then did not receive our luggage for about 48 hours after landing which was very inconvenient for our travel.

Poor, we had 1 hour to grab our checked luggage, go through customs, recheck bags and run across terminals to make our United flight. Poorly planned connections.

Check in in Albuquerque was awful. The people were great but they were over loaded. The procedures were terrible. We got through fine but it took 90+ minutes.

Will try to not fly with them again. Delays because of weather but got redirected to an airport where I could not make connection.

Staff didn’t care in business class. Closed the door on my mom while she was on the jetbridge and flight attendant told me she would make it from the connecting flight. They lied. My luggage was damaged on arrival. No success in filing damage claim.

Boston Logan is a crummy airport - signage is terrible or lacking in areas. Boarding seemed to be a free for all and with all the different airlines speaking, you couldn't tell who was supposed to be where and when. Plain and simple, airlines should board from the back of the plane to the front. Also someone was sitting in my seat. By the time that was figured out, I had to place my overhead behind me which made de-planing more difficult. Logan is not Lufthansa's fault so that is not on them, Boarding is on them! Still, overall it was a Good Experience flying with Lufthansa. This is not my first flight with them...

The flight was provided by Aer Lingus and our seats were in a poor condition (15A & 15C). They looked like they needed repairing/replacing and were uncomfortable for such a long flight. Also the arm rests on Aer Lingus planes do not lift more than around 45 degrees, instead of the usual 90 degrees upright, meaning you cannot maximum the space between you & your travel companion so as to be more comfortable for such a long flight.

Flights were actually with Aer Lingus outward and American Airlines & Aer Lingus on the return journey. Outward flight with Aer Lingus was good but the return flight with them was not so good as our seats were in a poor condition (15A & 15C) and looked like they needed replacing! The American Airlines flight from Miami to JFK New York was good and the seats were very comfortable and spacious (32D & 32E)

On my way from Chicago to London, I was seated next to a quite heavy passenger. I could barely move. BA should have ensured that overweight customers are placed in comfortable seats and not to penalize also other passengers because BA is not willing to accommodate these passengers and their needs. No respect at all.

The flight as far as timings go was excellent. Unfortunately we ended up sat with someone on a night flight who had been drinking alcohol before boarding and BA staff were happily serving him more alcohol. He was very drunk which made our flight uncomfortable and awkward. My partner had this person lying on him whilst asleep. Alcohol should be served minimally. If there had been an emergency this person would not have been in a fit state to act accordingly.

Balvenie & Glenfiddich Travel Retail

Most of us aren’t allowed to travel at the moment. But knowing a bit about the human psyche, some of us can get excessive after being unable to do something for a while. So, I assume the moment we are told the coast is clear to travel again, some of us will be more trigger happy with our spending. There’s nothing like still being high on adrenaline in the airport just as you’re about to fly home. I’m doing my part in helping our readers to decide what travel retail bottles can be deemed worthy or not to bring back home.

I know Jason has expressed his disappointment for William Grant numerous times. I don’t like the majority of the stuff coming from the big brands as well. But Glenfiddich has always been okay in my book. I love their 15 year old . I think their 12-year and 18-year are decent and well-priced. Recent label changes have been questionable for me, but they aren’t as unnecessarily flashy as the other brands.

On the other hand, I do think Balvenie is overpriced. I don’t find their regular releases that unique. Most of it may seem new to whisky beginners, but double maturations and finishes all sound gimmicky and normal nowadays. I guess, it’s partially because of that I don’t find them that much better than Glenfiddich to justify the price difference.

As always, the whisky will do the talking.

Balvenie 12 Triple Cask – review

Aged in first-fill ex-bourbon casks, refill casks and 1st fill ex-sherry casks, bottled at 40% ABV.

Color: amber.

On the nose: An initial wave of barley & barley husk with oranges and lemon peels. Then it gives way to an undertone of almonds, toffee and honey. There’s a hint of something zesty lime with unpeeled nuts with a surprising uppercut of ethanol at the end.

In the mouth: Hints of vanilla and a lick of cinnamon stick followed by a quick hello of coffee. Different citrus notes follow but different tastes of oranges are the most noticeable. An assortment of something peppery with honeysuckle, something waxy, licorice, apples and toffee at the end.

Conclusions

A very pleasant and interesting enough single malt which is, I think, held back by the lack of ABV. I don’t know how much this costs in Duty Free or other airports but this is scarily priced at £85 a litre via The Whisky Exchange.

Balvenie 16 triple cask – review.

Aged in first-fill ex-bourbon casks, refill casks and first-fill ex-sherry casks, bottled at 40% ABV.

On the nose: An astringent texture with a long scent of honey, followed by a big and quick smell of orange cough syrup and hints of other citrus. There are quick undertones of toffee, coffee and vanilla afterwards. Apples and hints of pineapple come out at the end.

In the mouth: There’s an off taste that reminds me of loose-leaf tea that’s been used too much. Some sort of acidity, mixed with cloves and vanilla. A moving mixture of apple juice, honey, toffee, coffee and thyme at the end.

There’s less dimension in this compared to the Triple Cask 12. This one has less degrees and has weaker citrus flavors. Again, I just hoped this was bottled at a higher ABV. What is it with the majority of travel retail releases being anemic? I’m seeing online that the average price for this is around £100, or was £99.90 on Master of Malt. About a £15 difference for a 4-year bump? Not bad. But I still think this whisky is overpriced for what you’re getting. I’ll think this is more justifiable if the ABV were at least 43% to 46%

Glenfiddich Select Cask – review

Aged in ex-bourbon casks, European oak cask & ex-red wine casks and bottled at 40% strength.

Color: honey.

On the nose: An incoherent mix of apples, orange peel oil, dates, honey, hints of simple syrup and hints of red grapes.

In the mouth: Apple juice, dried dates, barley tea, honey, hints of simple syrup, orange peel oil and undertones of grilled pineapple. Harsh tastes of toffee, hazelnut latte and coffee appear at the end.

This tastes young. Despite the age, this is very easy to drink. But is it due to the dilution or was this blend just made to be really easy to drink? There is no coherence in the flavor. Everything is all over the place.

For something worth about $50? I’ll never buy this. The 15-year solera is way better than this and is cheaper as well.

Score: 4/10

Glenfiddich reserve cask – review.

Aged in ex-sherry casks and bottled at 40% strength.

On the nose: Dried apricots, honey, cereals, an assortment of bitter notes that make me think of nut skins and thyme, undertones of caramelized apple mixed with stewed dates and apples.

In the mouth: An initial and lingering bitter taste that makes me think of cork, overused tea leaves, burnt BBQ sticks and rubber. Undertones of honey, toffee, roasted nuts and stewed apples at the end.

This is very pleasant on the nose. I was expecting sulfur notes because of the ex-sherry cask influence. But there were not. This was very lacking in texture, flavor, complexity and finish though. It all falls apart after sipping it. $60 and the worst of the batch? No thanks.

Score: 3/10

Glenfiddich vintage cask – review.

Barley peated to 25ppm. Aged in European oak casks and first-fill ex-bourbon casks, bottled at 40% ABV.

On the nose: I get pronounced yet balanced scents of smoke, seaweed, brine, iodine and peat. Behind those are subtle scents of prunes, honey, coconut sugar syrup and dates.

In the mouth: The peat and iodine here are more pronounced. The smoke and norid take a more supportive role. They’re accompanied by more undertones of honey, dates, apricots, peppers and something zingy. At the end is something like a mix of date and honey syrup.

I like this out of all the Glenfiddichs. For one, it’s not very common to encounter a peated ‘Fiddich. This is the most balanced and pleasant of the three travel retail ‘Fiddichs here. Yet, I’m curious to taste an unpeated version of this. Because the other 2 ‘Fiddichs disappointed, I have a nagging feeling the peat covered the faults of this whisky.

At £79, I’ll definitely pass on this. It might be worth buying just to have a peated Fiddich in the collection, but that’s it.

Thanks for the review! I have a bottle of Balvenie 14 Peated Triple Cask at 48.3% ABV (travel retail only), which I bought from Europe last year for $92. The bump up in ABV is nice, I enjoy the flavors, and I think the cask variety brings more dimension / complexity compared to the 14-year-old Balvenie Peat Week 2002 that I have, but it seems to lack “depth”. I could describe it as either being rather “harsh” / “bright” or, to make a musical analogy, being mostly treble with maybe a little upper mid-range. I feel like I’m missing the whole lower half of the spectrum, but perhaps that’s more of what a typical Speyside provides at 14 years of age. I don’t plan on buying another bottle, and I would say a “fair” price for it in my book would be $60 rather than $92.

Hi Dwight, thanks for commenting. 48.3% does sound very nice! I liked the Peat Week so its nice to hear that the 14 year Peated Triple Cask is better than it. I do sometimes describe a lot of citrus notes as being bright. So you’re pretty close to the mark there.

$92 for Duty Free does sound painful. Imagine how much more it would be with taxes! Good on you for trying and moving on though. This is an attitude more drinkers will hopefully adapt.

Morning John, definitely the last few times of flying (remembers fond sepia coloured memories) I’ve made more of an effort to see what’s around the duty free bar the usual suspects of Diageo, Willam Grants and Monsieur Ricard, finding some Scapa and Glen Scotia in the process.

What would you say would be your best duty free purchases?

Hi Ben, it depends on which airport you’re at and what you’re looking for. The best airport for single malt whisky is Taoyuan airport. HK DFS had some Transcontinental Line Rum and Rhum JM. I remember their whisky selection consisting of mostly of the big and boring brands. I can’t speak for Changi at the moment as they changed retailers (if that’s the right term). So I don’t know what has changed.

You say the Gf select tastes young despite it’s age! How old is it? Have you ever done the tours to find out the processes?

Hi Ryan, I don’t know the ages of the whisky that makes up this blend. But I’ve had enough young single malt from the big brands to make an educated guess is something is young. By young I mean something below 10 years old.

I’ve never been to Scotland so I’ve never been to any Scotch distillery.

I like your reviews and agree that the Glenfiddichs are nothing special. However I wonder if we ever get a rating of more than 7 on this website for a regular/daily sipper type of whisky? Or does it require real Vintage ones to get there?

Hi Ron, thanks for the comment. I’m pretty sure there are some out there. But it’s highly likely the regulars skus from the very accessible brands won’t get these scores. I think you’re more likely to get them from rum and mezcal than whisky.

I guess it will depend on where you are based. The Philippines whisky scene is still growing so I have to order most of my bottles online or buy bottles when I travel. So that makes me more picky with what I buy.

You can find quite a few reviews here that give 7 or higher for what I’ll consider regular/daily sipper although your definition may differ from mine.

The Glenfarclas 15, 17 and 21 are within my budget of what I consider daily sipper, ratings of 7-8. The Compass Box Hedonism doesn’t have a rating but it’s one of my favorite whiskies ever. The non Cask Strength Redbreast 12 was rated 8 but I can get it cheaper than the Balvenie where I’m at.

These are just from the top of my head.

I guess it all depends on what one’s budget is and what the availability is in one’s area.

Sorry John I miss read your comment on the age! I thought you knew when commenting “despite the age”. Still half asleep when reading your reviews. It is indeed young ,7yo. The process will reflect the price I think and is it not a litre you get in travel retail? Highly recommend a trip to the beautiful Scotland and a tour of the many wonderful distilleries.

Hi Ryan, No worries. I think all the travel retail Fiddichs I’ve seen are 1L. I could be wrong though as I don’t always pay attention to stuff I deem boring. Yes! Visiting Scotland is in the bucket list.

My palate is maybe not discerning enough, so I tend to trust master blenders to know what they are doing. I have decided that I’m quite taken with Grant’s Monkey Shoulder, which I understand is a blend of Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Kininvie. And lower priced than the single malts. Am I missing out? I’m almost relieved to read John’s 3, 4 & 5/10 scores for bottles more expensive than I’m comfortable buying!

Hi Clinton, I think some master blenders have no choice but to do the bidding of their corporate masters. They may know what they’re doing but they may not have all the materials they want. Monkey Shoulder has been reformulated from what I heard. I don’t know what they changed though. I think Kininvie is worth trying as it’s good whisky. But it’s just damn expensive.

Cabernet Sauvignon is the world’s most popular red wine. Referred to as King Cab, the wine is famous for its tannic structure, blackberry and cassis flavors, and age worthiness. It’s made from red-skinned grapes that thrive in a variety of climates. Since it’s relatively easy to grow everybody loves to drink it, Cabernet has been planted all over the world.

What is Cabernet Sauvignon?

Cabernet Sauvignon is a red-skinned wine grape. Despite Cab’s reputation as king, it’s actually the love child of French varieties Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc.

Where does Cabernet Sauvignon come from?

Cabernet Sauvignon originated in Bordeaux, France where it makes up a large percentage of the red blends produced on the left bank known as Médoc. Of course, Cabernet Sauvignon is grown all over Bordeaux, and indeed, all over Europe, from Spain to Italy to Austria. It’s also popular in the New World, found everywhere from South Africa, Chile, the United States, Australia and New Zealand. Because of its widespread popularity, Cabernet Sauvignon is now considered an “international” variety.

What does Cabernet Sauvignon taste like ?

Typically, Cabernet Sauvignon is dry, full-bodied, with medium acidity, moderate to high tannins, and alcohol that ranges between 13% and 15%. The best Cabernet Sauvignon taste has complex flavors that include graphite, herbs, blackberries, and cassis, plus cedar and baking spice notes when aged in French oak.

How much alcohol does a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon have?

The alcohol in Cabernet Sauvignon depends on where it is grown, as climate influences ripeness which influences alcohol levels. Cabernet Sauvignon from cooler regions like France often has 13-14% alcohol by volume (ABV) but can approach 14.5% when it is grown in warmer climates like California and Australia.

Is Cabernet Sauvignon sweet or dry?

Cabernet Sauvignon is almost always made in a dry style. Keep in mind, tasting fruit flavors like blackberries, is not the same as tasting sugar sweetness. A dry wine means that after the grapes are pressed, the sugar from the grape must is converted into alcohol by yeast. When all the sugar is converted, it creates a fully dry wine. Sometimes, a little sugar called residual sugar (RS), is left behind. This might be purposeful, to give a hint of richness and sweetness to the wine, or it might be because the yeast didn’t finish the fermentation. A few grams per liter of RS is still considered a dry wine, however.

How many calories and carbs does Cabernet Sauvignon have?

Cabernet Sauvignon is typically dry (see above). Of course, wine with little to no sugar doesn’t equate to wine without calories. Cabernet Sauvignon calories come from alcohol. Typically, a 5-ounce serving of Cabernet Sauvignon has around 125 calories, or 625 calories in a 750ml bottle. If a Cabernet Sauvignon has a touch of residual sugar, the wine will have carbohydrates or carbs, but only a small amount. Dry wines usually range between zero and 4 grams of carbohydrates.

How should I serve Cabernet Sauvignon?

Like all reds, Cabernet Sauvignon has an ideal temperature range. When Cabernet Sauvignon is too warm, the alcohol tastes hot. Too cold, and the aromas and flavors are muted. The ideal temperature range to serve Cabernet Sauvignon is 60-65°F, which can be achieved by 15 minutes in the refrigerator. If you don’t finish a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon, replace the cork and stick it back in the fridge. The flavors will stay fresh for 2–4 days. Beyond that, the wine will start to oxidize.

Food Pairing with Cabernet Sauvignon: what works and what doesn’t?

The best food pairings for Cabernet Sauvignon account for the wine’s deep flavor and high tannin content. These qualities make Cabernet a perfect partner to grilled, roasted, and braised red meats, game, and flavorful sauces like pepper and demi-glace.

Pairings that don’t work with Cabernet Sauvignon are foods that are light and delicate. Why? The wine’s rich flavor and big structure will overpower them. Think seafood and shellfish, salad, and fresh vegetables. Of course, there are always exceptions to every rule.

What’s the difference between Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir?

Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir are two different red grapes. Pinot Noir is a thin-skinned variety that makes wines of light color and light to medium alcohol, with high acidity, elegance, and perfume of red fruits (cranberries, raspberries, red cherries). Pinot Noir has long been famous with wine lovers for the haunting styles made in Burgundy and the riper expressions from California and Oregon. Cabernet Sauvignon has more tannin, body, alcohol, and a darker hue, and hails from the left bank of Bordeaux where it has been made famous by the wines of the Médoc, notably Margaux and Pauillac.

Why lower-alcohol ‘Rishi wines’ are all the rage

T hey’re known as ‘Rishi wines’ and, suddenly, they’re everywhere. For those who don’t know or can’t guess what a Rishi wine might be, it’s one with an abv just below 11.5%. The name comes from the Prime Minister’s highly controversial changes to alcohol duty , which Sunak declared would ‘simplify’ the system. Those who have to implement them agree that they’re ludicrously complex, burdening the wine industry with even more bureaucracy for which the drinker ultimately has to pay.

The changes create a financial incentive to drink lower-abv wines. From February 2025, if the Conservatives are returned to government, the plan is to calculate duty according to the precise abv, measured to the nearest 0.5%. For the time being, wines with an abv of 11.5%-14.5% fall into a single band with duty fixed at £2.67 per bottle. Below 11.5% abv, you pay less. On a wine with an abv of 11%, for instance, duty is £2.35, at 10.5% it’s £2.24, at 10% £2.13 and so on (and it gets cheaper still below 8.5%). The VAT added on to the duty amplifies these differences.

Since the British drinker is notoriously tight-fisted, it has focused supermarket buyers’ minds on lower-alcohol wines that will be cheaper and therefore more appealing on the shelf. Or on wines that can be sold for a greater profit. 

But why stop at 10.5% or 11%? Dial down the alcohol a tiny bit further and you find wines in the 8%-10% abv range that are known as ‘mid-strength’ wines. A few – like spätlese riesling from the Mosel or effervescent moscato from Asti – have been around for ever. Others have been painstakingly developed to tempt the new breed of moderate drinker. The Doctors’ pinot noir and sauvignon blanc from Marlborough, for instance, created by the quality-minded Dr John Forrest, which have an abv of 9.5%, fall into this category.

There is also a proliferation of Rishi-moderation hybrids, encouraged by a combination of lower duty and the no-and-low movement , for the past few years one of the biggest trends in drink.

Sainsbury’s launched a mid-strength range in September – the month after the first raft of duty changes came in – and has just added two new wines, a grolleau gris from the Loire at 8.5% and a Marlborough sauvignon blanc at 9.5%. ‘Mid-strength wine is well placed to deliver on the clear trend for moderation as it has similar taste cues to full-strength wine,’ says the supermarket. ‘Our data suggest customers aged 55-plus and young adults are driving demand, with “boomers” buying into the range for health benefits, whilst younger customers are looking for something new and different.’

I’ve tasted a few sub-11.5% wines that I’d take pains to avoid but others work well. Sparkling wines can be particularly successful at these levels. As for the Rishi-moderation hybrids, they really vary; the extreme pungency of Kiwi sauvignon blanc translates quite well, though.

You might wonder why you’d buy mid-strength when you could just, say, pour a smaller glass of your regular or make a spritzer? To which I say: we live in an era in which people buy ready-chopped onion and order Deliveroo instead of walking to the freezer and getting out a pizza to put in the oven. The ready-to-drink option is appealing. Also, everyone likes to be able to pour a proper glassful (don’t they?). And finally, to be pragmatic, wine comes in 750ml bottles and it feels bad to open one if you know you’re not going to finish it.
