Tripsy Review: The Ultimate Trip Planner for iPhone and iPad

Summer may be over, but there’s never really an offseason for planning future vacations or business trips. We all have our own methods of trip planning – where we store important documents, how to set an agenda and share that agenda with family or friends – but I’d guess most of us aren’t entirely satisfied with our current planning systems. Important information can be scattered across different apps, services, or analog files, which is fine but not ideal. Tripsy aims to solve that problem.

Tripsy isn’t entirely new to the App Store, having first launched almost a year ago, but it recently received a major 2.0 update alongside iOS 13’s debut. While I never used the previous version, the new Tripsy is exactly the tool I’ve wanted for trip planning for a long time. The app serves as a one-stop shop for organizing all of your trip-related information: you can add Apple Maps points of interest to your agenda, scheduling them to specific times and days, add notes to each saved location, store important travel documents in the app, and share your full trip data with fellow travelers. All of this functionality is enhanced by a strong app experience thanks to system features like multiwindow on iPad, Sign In with Apple, dark mode, and more.

Planning a Trip

Tripsy offers a selection of destination suggestions you can choose from to kickstart your planning, all of which include lists of popular things to do in those cities, but if you’re going anywhere else in the world outside the 11 included suggestions, you’ll want to get started by hitting the orange ‘+’ button to create your new trip. Tripsy will ask for the trip name and dates, and two helpful additional options: time zone and background image.

Selecting a time zone eliminates a point of potential confusion when arranging your itinerary. On the last trip I took, I had added events for my agenda to Apple’s Calendar app, but dealing with changing time zones was a point of frustration for me, so I’m looking forward to using Tripsy in the future. The ability to add a background image is a small touch, but one I appreciate: when planning a trip, it’s nice being able to see an image of your destination in the background. Tripsy integrates with Unsplash so you can choose from an extensive selection of beautiful stock photos to adorn your trip’s background.

After a new trip is created, you can get to work filling out its agenda. Tapping ‘Add new’ at the bottom of the screen loads a grid of different activity options, including Flight, Lodging, Restaurant, Museum, and more. Each activity type is accompanied by a colorful icon reminiscent of what you’d find in Apple Maps, which is fitting because Tripsy includes tight integration with Maps. Once you’ve chosen an activity type, you’ll enter a search screen where you can search for any point of interest from Apple Maps (or enter a location manually).

Creating an itinerary for your trip.

When you’ve found the right location, Tripsy will import its phone number and web address automatically, so they’ll be easily accessible throughout your trip. You’ll be asked to choose a start time (and optionally end time), which includes a lot of flexibility: after picking a day, you can either leave it at that or go more granular with a couple different options, either selecting a simple Morning, Afternoon, or Night designation, or choosing a specific hour for that activity to take place. I really appreciate the variety of options, as it enables being as loose or precise with your plans as you’d like. Finally, when adding a location to your itinerary there’s a Notes field you can fill out as well for jotting down any information you want to remember, or communicate with co-travelers.

Preparing for Your Trip

Documents can be saved in Tripsy.

Once you have an agenda set, there are two features to take advantage of in the time leading up to your travels: sharing and document storage.

Tripsy can share your full trip agenda with any family members or friends who will be accompanying you on your travels. The person icon in the top-right corner of the main trip overview sends a link that enables fellow travelers to not only see your plans, but fully collaborate on them too. Guests you invite can add or modify events, add notes, and do anything else you can do inside the app.

Document storage is a useful way to keep any and all travel-related data in one place. Inside a trip’s Documents screen you’ll find options to import a document from the Files app, or an image from Photos, in addition to taking a photo or creating a new note. This becomes all the more useful when collaborating on a trip with several co-travelers, who can all dump relevant files in one place.

Taking Your Trip

When the time for travel finally arrives, I love the itinerary view that Tripsy provides for fully-outlined trips. The combination of colorful icons, subtle time of day glyphs, and clean, crisp text fits beautifully together. When you’re exploring the city, referencing your itinerary in Tripsy is extremely convenient and offers quick access to any information you’d want. Tapping on a saved event shows you key information like date, duration, phone number, and website, along with a note if you set one, and a map view which you can tap to navigate to the location with Apple Maps, Google Maps, Citymapper, Uber, or Lyft. You can even long-press on an event to see a context menu and preview of all this information.

System Features

Tripsy’s basic functionality makes it well worth trying out, but the app is particularly special due to its strong adoption of system features on iPhone and iPad.

On the iPad, Tripsy not only supports Split View and Slide Over multitasking, it also offers full multiwindow capabilities on iPadOS. If you’d like to keep your trip overview in a full-screen window while a Slide Over window hovers on top with a specific location page, or your itinerary view, that’s entirely possible using multiple windows. Or if you want to pair Tripsy with Apple Maps in a Split View or Slide Over pair, you can use drag and drop to save locations from Maps directly into your trip’s itinerary. Simply pick up a Maps point of interest and drop it into Tripsy; I’ve found this particularly effective when exploring new locations I may want to visit.

Dark mode in iOS 13 is fully supported by Tripsy, so the app will change themes based on your device’s current system appearance setting. Both light and dark modes look sharp.

Sign In with Apple

When turning on sync in Tripsy, the app will prompt you to create an account. You can do this the traditional way, with an email and password, or you can use Sign In with Apple to set up your account with just a couple taps. Tripsy’s implementation of Sign In with Apple is the first I’ve seen offer the ability to have your real email hidden and cause all communication to forward through an Apple-generated random address. I ran into a bug when trying to use that option, which likely is an Apple issue, but it was nice to see it included nonetheless.

Apple Watch

Tripsy offers a solid Apple Watch app that grants convenient access to your trip itinerary, so you can easily scroll through the day’s agenda and tap on events to get more information about them. There’s even the ability to tap on map thumbnails in Tripsy’s watchOS app to load those destinations in the Watch’s Maps app.

The app’s design implements modal cards extremely well, similar to what you’ll find in Apple’s own Maps and Shortcuts apps. It helps Tripsy feel especially native, and is ideal for one-handed iPhone use.

Siri Shortcuts and Suggestions

Finally, Tripsy also offers a few options for Siri shortcuts you can set up, including most notably the ability to get information about your next scheduled activity, and to view all upcoming plans for your trip. There’s one other Siri feature too: when you add hotel or flight information to your trip, Siri intelligence will detect that and offer to add the details to the Calendar app, similar to the intelligent suggestions Siri offers for content located in Mail.

Tripsy does what I’ve long wished for: offers a compelling trip planning experience in a modern app that takes advantage of iOS’ core technology strengths. Even if you set aside the app’s core functionality as a hub for trips, it deserves applause simply for its rich integration of so many modern OS technologies. I don’t travel more than two or three times per year, so I’d probably be fine sticking with my former system of using Apple Notes to organize trip details, but Tripsy’s OS strengths make it an app I’m eager to invest in because I know it won’t require sacrificing the array of system benefits Notes offers – Tripsy has just as many system integrations, if not more.

The next time I travel, I know which app I’m going to use.

Software Reviews and Criticism

Okay, but now what?

This app has a beautiful interface and importing your lodging and flights are easy with the premium account. But having to add your entire itinerary manually is an absolute deal breaker for me. Other itinerary apps like Sygic Travel and Wanderlog use interactive map interfaces that allow you to click on a location and add it to your itinerary with ease. And with other itinerary apps you get important information on restaurants, museums, markets, etc. such as business hours, a description blurb, how long people usually spend there. They also give you optimized routes and travel times. I signed up for the premium special of $2.99/month for the first three months, just to try it out. But if this app doesn’t change to be more traveler friendly, I’m likely going to cancel before the price jumps to the regular $4.99.

Nice looking, but...

Directions don’t work (it literally just shows you a picture of a map instead of starting turn by turn directions). You can’t use google maps for directions. You can’t get notifications for different items on your agenda. Images for itinerary wallpaper take ages to load. It just doesn’t fit my needs. Seems like more attention was paid to interface design than robust functionality. When you’re traveling in a big city what do you want out of a travel app? I for one don’t want to be opening the app every hour. It would be nice if the app notified me about upcoming itinerary items and just surfaced them on my lock screen at a set time, or when I was near the location.

Looked Promising but..

Looked like a great app. I personally hate subscriptions. There’s no way I can justify 40 a year or a one time purchase for $150 for what seems to be features that other apps include for free and for stuff that is just a matter of convenience. The real problem no one is addressing is Microsoft taking 30%. If Microsoft dropped that to 10-15%. Developers wouldn’t charge as much and I might actually subscribe to some of these apps. Maybe one day

Needs improvement

First off, as others said, it requires all manual input. There is no way to connect it to your email and have it look for trip info, nor can you email reservations to a tripsy address and have it auto populate. Even if there was just a web interface that you could type into that would be better. If an activity is multi-day, like a hotel stay, the dates list only shows the start date. Subsequent days appear not to have no hotel stays. Wish I’d paid more attention before I plunked down $$.

So Frustrating!!

I have been using Tripsy Pro paid subscription for over a year now. I love that all my information can be stored in one place. But getting it there us another story. The app simply doesn’t work properly. When entering data the app hangs up constantly. Upon finally getting all the info in for an entry and clicking “save”, it can take up to 4 minutes for it to save. Most entries take me on average of 10 minutes per entry to get it into the app. When I try to scroll through the entries it looks up and won’t move through the entries. When I tap the itinerary box or a entry box or even the gray “x” box in the top right corner, the app just sits there and doesn’t move for a while. It takes me 4 or 5 times as long to get the entry in as it does for me to do the typing. I have contacted Rafael many times about these issues but nothing gets better. Matter of fact, I have been pitting in a new trip the last couple of days and the app is WORSE than it has been in the past year. In 2 days I have spent close to 10 hours putting in data and have only gotten 10 days worth entered. I have on average about 5-6 entries per trip day. This is VERY annoying and frustrating to have to spend this much time just because the app won’t move through the process. Yes, there are tons of travel planner apps for planning your trips and building itineraries out there, but there are almost as many different types of travelers. We recognize that different apps work better for different planning styles. To help you navigate this crush of apps, we went out and tested all of the top-rated iOS and Android trip planning apps that help you build itineraries and discovered which ones work best for each type of traveler.

We did the work so you don’t have to!

Our approach to finding the best trip planners for each type of traveler included:

Looking at the top 30 apps that show up for “trip planner” in both the iOS and Android app stores
Downloading the ones that appeared to have an itinerary builder feature and a user rating of over 4 stars (i.e., removed niche apps focused on flights, lodging, etc.)
Testing out each app by creating our own itineraries

If you’re looking for a pre-made template to fill in, this may not be the app for you. Instead, it is an incredibly flexible and comprehensive planner. You can make itineraries down to the hour, or just use it as a long list of places to visit, making it great for international excursions and domestic road trips. Get creative and start planning!

We chose Wanderlog over:

Funliday – can ‘discover’ places and collaborate with others on itineraries, but it only provides guides written by Funliday or other users and the search feature was slow
Pebblar – it also uses a map for planning, but it costs $10 per itinerary or $10 / month for unlimited itineraries
Tripn – a simple easy-to-use itinerary builder that views everything on a map (Apple Maps), but lacks: guides for inspiration, routing capabilities, collaboration abilities, and ability to use on Android or desktop (iOS only)
Mapify – while it also helps with discovering attractions and making an itinerary, you can’t see your itinerary on a map to see how it all ties together.
TripHugger – more geared like a social network; great for group trip planning, including a chat feature, but you can’t use it to navigate or export your places and it’s not available on desktop

For the planner who lives off reviews: Tripadvisor

There’s no doubt that Tripadvisor is one of the top sources for reading travelers’ reviews. But, did you know that you can also use it to plan trips? As you go through different guides and lists, you can save places and tag them to a specific trip. When you’re ready to organize your activities, you can sort all the saved places into different days. You can even book activities directly from the platform. One of the most convenient features is that you can save items offline, so you can reference them regardless of your internet connection abroad.

While Tripadvisor is great for ideas and saving favorite places, its map is tougher to use. For instance, you can see all the places saved on a map, but you can’t distinguish which places are tied to which days – everything is displayed at once. You also can’t use it to navigate from one place to another – there’s no map routing or ability to export places to other mapping apps.

We chose Tripadvisor over:

TripScout – while it has interesting and curated content, its planning capabilities are narrow (e.g., if you want to plan by day, you have to specify dates) and the app is only available on iOS (no desktop access & sorry Android users!)
Culture Trip – another great resource for guides and booking experiences (e.g., tours, etc.), but while you can bookmark restaurants or things to do, you can’t build an itinerary or reorder activities at all
Guides by Lonely Planet – excellent resource for curated guides all around the world with handy features like visualizing everything on a map and accessing info offline, but access will cost you $5 / month or $40 / year, and you are still limited to just bookmarking places instead of building out full itineraries

For the no frills planner: TripIt

Chances are, if you’ve googled ‘trip planner,’ you’ve come across TripIt. It’s a no frills trip planner that organizes flights, car details, and reservations. You’ll need to have a good idea of what you want to do before using the app. If you’re looking for inspiration and a fun user experience, this is the wrong place. It doesn’t look up places or pull up information for you. But if you know where you want to be and when, you can organize all of your logistics in one place.

If you need to stay up-to-date on any travel changes, there’s also TripIt Pro for ~$50 / year, which gives you alerts and notifications during your travels, which is especially helpful for air travel.

Note: Recently, the website performance has been slow and the app has been crashing. However, TripIt does have tens of millions of users for a reason, so even with the recent bugs, which will hopefully be fixed soon, we had to include it in this list! Wanderlog (mentioned above) also lets you store your hotel and flight reservations, so if you’re not looking to use some of TripIt’s more advanced features, it could save you juggling an extra app.

We chose TripIt over:

Tripsy – although we like this UI better and it’s easier to pull up places, it still doesn’t display any context info and it’s only available on iOS (no desktop access & sorry Android users!); has lots of potential though!
CheckMyTrip – while still very useful for organizing activities and getting flight alerts, there’s no accompanying map view, making it difficult to visualize and navigate on your trip

For the road trip planner who needs breaks: Roadtrippers

Road trips are on the rise, especially in the United States, as we figure out how to safely navigate these COVID times. If you have to get somewhere and anticipate a long trip ahead, Roadtrippers will help you route and find relevant points of interest along the way.

It’s easy to use – type in where you’re coming from and going, and indicate what you’re looking for in between (attractions, gas, food, etc.). Roadtrippers will recommend different places that fit your bill and you can add stops along the way. The catch? If you want to add more than 5 stops in between, you’ll have to pay $30 / year. If you’re heavy into saving places, you may want to still stick to Google Maps or Wanderlog (mentioned above).

Don’t need to go anywhere but looking for a fun weekend drive? You can also use Roadtrippers to look at guides and ideas for nearby road trip routes.

We chose Roadtrippers over:

inRoute Route Planner – more complicated user interface and no desktop version; has features that are best for drivers in non-traditional vehicles (e.g., motorcycles), like weather alerts and elevation info; also $30 / year to create routes with more than 5 waypoints in between a route
Road Trip Planner & Road Trip Planner Viewer – while the functionality seems to be there, it has 2 different apps (need to pay $4.99 for Road Trip Planner and then can view plans on the Viewer); it’s only available on iOS and mapping is solely based on Apple Maps (not Google Maps)
Fotospot Road Trip – great for finding cool photo-worthy spots nearby or along your route, but doesn’t have any itinerary building capabilities

What else didn’t make the list

Rome2rio : Great for providing transportation options between places and activity recommendations, but doesn’t have features to build and save an itinerary
Trip Plans : You can’t use this to build your own plans – it’s just an app to view plans created by your travel agent
Welcome – AI itineraries : We love the idea of automating suggested itineraries for those who don’t want to plan, but we tested it out for a few cities we were familiar with and didn’t agree with the itineraries provided – maybe it just needs some more time to finetune its recommendations!

So frustrating.

I have been using Tripsy Pro paid subscription for over a year now. I love that all my information can be stored in one place. But getting it there us another story. TravelPlannerGuide simply doesn’t work properly. When entering data TravelPlannerGuide hangs up constantly. Upon finally getting all the info in for an entry and clicking “save”, it can take up to 4 minutes for it to save. Most entries take me on average of 10 minutes per entry to get it into TravelPlannerGuide . When I try to scroll through the entries it looks up and won’t move through the entries. When I tap the itinerary box or a entry box or even the gray “x” box in the top right corner, TravelPlannerGuide just sits there and doesn’t move for a while. It takes me 4 or 5 times as long to get the entry in as it does for me to do the typing. I have contacted Rafael many times about these issues but nothing gets better. Matter of fact, I have been pitting in a new trip the last couple of days and TravelPlannerGuide is WORSE than it has been in the past year. In 2 days I have spent close to 10 hours putting in data and have only gotten 10 days worth entered. I have on average about 5-6 entries per trip day. This is VERY annoying and frustrating to have to spend this much time just because TravelPlannerGuide won’t move through the process. I continue to use Tripsy because I have so much time invested, close to 200 hours over the past year. If you use TravelPlannerGuide, be prepared for frustration and ling hours.

Okay, but now what?

TravelPlannerGuide has a beautiful interface and importing your lodging and flights are easy with the premium account. But having to add your entire itinerary manually is an absolute deal breaker for me. Other itinerary apps like Sygic Travel and Wanderlog use interactive map interfaces that allow you to click on a location and add it to your itinerary with ease. And with other itinerary apps you get important information on restaurants, museums, markets, etc. such as business hours, a description blurb, how long people usually spend there. They also give you optimized routes and travel times. I signed up for the premium special of $2.99/month for the first three months, just to try it out. But if TravelPlannerGuide doesn’t change to be more traveler friendly, I’m likely going to cancel before the price jumps to the regular $4.99.

The email forwarding works as well as an other trip app. Where it shines is the UI. The home tab is elephant and intuitive. Manuals adding an itinerary is easy and is importing pictures of confirmation or QR code’s. Plus all the map and guide elements if you need those. Nice looking, but...

Directions don’t work (it literally just shows you a picture of a map instead of starting turn by turn directions). You can’t use google maps for directions. You can’t get notifications for different items on your agenda. Images for itinerary wallpaper take ages to load. It just doesn’t fit my needs. Seems like more attention was paid to interface design than robust functionality. When you’re traveling in a big city what do you want out of a travel app? I for one don’t want to be opening TravelPlannerGuide every hour. It would be nice if TravelPlannerGuide notified me about upcoming itinerary items and just surfaced them on my lock screen at a set time, or when I was near the location.

Almost Perfect!!!

I am a huge planner, and I love being organized. Trips he allows you to not only plan out your travel, but keep all of your information in one place. The only thing needed to make this five stars for me is the addition of an option to add receipts and photo albums. I would love to be able to use this as a travel journal along with a travel planner and go back and look at my trips after I’ve taken them. I feel like it would be pretty easy to add that in as another option.

Looked Promising but..

Looked like a great app. I personally hate subscriptions. There’s no way I can justify 40 a year or a one time purchase for $150 for what seems to be features that other apps include for free and for stuff that is just a matter of convenience. The real problem no one is addressing is Apple taking 30%. If Apple dropped that to 10-15%. Developers wouldn’t charge as much and I might actually subscribe to some of these apps. Maybe one day

TravelPlannerGuide is so beautifully designed, it looks like Apple could have made it! It’s a delight to use and all the features are clever and well implemented. My only regret is that I don’t travel often enough to use it regularly!

Good UI, but misses on core function

The UI is nice and easy to use. However while trying to use TravelPlannerGuide extensively for a Japan trip, it really is poor at understanding time zones. The only way to correct is to set specific times for each and every item I saved. Huge pain. And with time zones incorrect, my whole trip plan isn’t of much use. TravelPlannerGuide should know that if I enter a hotel stay in Japan, the timer zone should be Japan.

Manual Addition Ruins Experience

The developers created an excellent UI. It looks great and is fairly intuitive. However, the manual activity addition system is quite labor-intensive even for short trips. I was planning my business trip to Sunnyvale, and to enter just a few items took a really long time. TravelPlannerGuide features no auto-complete for anything, so all names and addresses must be entered by hand. As such, it’s really no better than just compiling Google Maps links in a Google Doc.

Good idea but some issues

It’s a good app to plan a trip and itinerary with someone else however there are a lot of searches that don’t show up so you can’t add as a location. Not sure if that’s just searches in Japan but found it frustrating that locations didn’t show up when searching for them, even common places. Would be nice to have pins that you could drop wherever you want to and add a note

One of the best apps to keep your trip organized all in one place. UI is beautiful and works flawlessly. One suggestion: ability to customize categories would be great!

Basic Feature is “Premium”

Don’t waste your time downloading. Just to be able to share your trip you have to pay $35 or the monthly $5. Even Tripit allows you to share and collaborate a trip for free but to have to PAY for this feature is ridiculous. If you’re going with friends or family only one person can view the trip on their phone or add to it??? Come on guys. Be better. That’s just low. Sad thing is that I actually liked TravelPlannerGuide ... :/

Idea great but not easy to use

I love the idea of this. After downloading I went to enter a trip. It would not let me enter time of flight and kept going back to the time it was currently even though the date was correct for the flight. It also didn’t make things easy to enter a connecting flight. I didn’t go any further in TravelPlannerGuide .

Needs work…

Good setup, but not worth money to pay and input your trip. Would be better with photos and info for cost on trips. I tested to try and see if I could put another trip in and you only get one. I don’t waste time on apps that do this. Not wasting my money for a limited app.

Doesn’t even find a major well-known resort when I add manually. Not worth the fight They reached out and and offered help, that was nice. The tip may work, it’s a workaround. Just know that if you never want to leave TravelPlannerGuide and do all of your itinerary within TravelPlannerGuide more than likely you’ll have to pay. I just want to use it for 1 trip, it probably is very good if you travel all the time? I travel about 1/year and was hoping this would be better than me printing stuff out and making notes in iOS…

Looking forward..

Trying to find an alternative to Travefy. TravelPlannerGuide seems promising! Only negative so far is there’s no web client interface that i saw—I like being able to plan my trip on my computer first. Updated review to come soon.

Flight Info Wrong

Some of the flights will fly multiple times in a day, it may go from NYC to Boston, and go back to NYC, and go back to Boston in one day. But when I entered the flight number, it only let me choose the first flight. This is very annoying

Unusable flights

On launch they didn’t support multi-leg flights (?!?!?!?!), and now that that’s fixed, it’s showing horribly wrong leg options. Not even close. Triple checked, two other apps have no issues. The constant flight issues show TravelPlannerGuide is not thought out or tested, and if a trip app can’t get flights right, it’s worthless.

Really Basic

So much manual work, and sometimes flight search won’t add the flight to the itinerary. TravelPlannerGuide is basic compared to even TripIt basic (free). And $4.99 a month for syncing? I’ll look again in another year.

Love the interface. Very easy to use and intuitive. Love to see a few enhancements: - Show all my destinations in a single trip on Apple Maps, something TripIt does - Automatically captured photos of a destination user enter - Export to pdf and share with friends. Not all the people has TravelPlannerGuide and are willing to subscribe in the first place

Nice idea, though there is a lot of manual entry. I’ve got a trip coming up to AZ with my wife. Wish I could share this trip and collaborate with her. That functionality would be useful.

The app first asks you to name the destination city. As far as we checked, iplan.ai works best for popular tourist cities, not offbeat or obscure travel. Next, note how many days you will be there, and then choose your free time each day—a cool step to ensure a better itinerary if you already have some plans, but not a whole days worth.

Tell iplan.ai if you're traveling solo, as a couple, with family, or with friends, and then choose your interest among topics like history, art and culture, nature, entertainment, shopping, food, sports, relaxing, etc. Finally, choose between an economy, normal, or luxury budget.

After a few minutes, iplan.ai gives you a day-wise itinerary for your trip. It's plotted on a map so you can see all the locations, and each point of interest has a brief description along with estimated travel time.

The app has both free and paid plans. With a paid account, you can share the trip plan with your friends and access it offline. Another limitation of iplan.ai is that you can't get an itinerary for a multi-city trip. For now, you'll need to make a plan for each city you're visiting, one at a time.

[The following article has been translated from the July 9 issue of the Belgian left socialist weekly La Gauche.]

“As to alliances, we would think that they ought to be constructed ‘in three stages’: a Franco-Russian treaty procuring a first degree of security; the Anglo-Soviet pact and an agreement to be concluded between France and Great Britain constituting a second degree; the future pact of the United Nations, in which America would be a capital element, crowning the whole and serving as the ultimate recourse.” It was in these terms that Charles de Gaulle in December 1944, at the time of his first trip to Moscow, defined his concepts concerning European security, according to his Memoirs. (Volume III, p. 83, “Livre de Foche” edition.) Many things indicate that he has not changed his mind twenty-two years later. Wasn’t his second trip to Moscow designed to advance this concept?

Those with a more dour outlook will immediately object. The head of the Fifth Republic had something much more Machiavellian in mind. What he is aiming at is the predominance of France in Europe, or at least Western Europe if he is unable to extend it “from the Atlantic to the Urals.”

Since France doesn’t have the necessary economic weight, it must neutralize the drive of German industry through military superiority and diplomatic ruses. Hence it has two interests in common with the Kremlin—to block the Bundeswehr from getting nuclear arms and to break the American grip on “little Europe.” Thus the trip to Moscow was a power play against Washington and Bonn.

No doubt these analysts are right on the long-range aims of the general. But the nature of things is such that the designs of men—no Tatter how imbued with their own “grandeur”—are not at all sufficient to shape the destiny of the world. This is determined by the relationship among the big social forces. More than once in history, the diplomatic maneuvers of a power that was too weak have ended in serving the ‘big ones” despite the best intentions in the world. Didn’t this happen once again with the trip to Moscow?

Thus in the United States, the most cunning, like the servile tools of the (Johnson administration, carefully refrained from denouncing the general. “De Gaulle in Moscow served the United States despite the United States,” said some. ‘He worked for the whole West,’ others said approvingly. In Bonn, after weeks of glacial chill, the barometer of Franco-German relations again points to “fair weather.”

The truth is that de Gaulle, contrary to the groundless fears of some, did not betray his West German class brothers any more than he did his Polish class brothers at the time of his first trip.

In December 1944, Stalin dangled a “good, firm alliance,” real support against the Anglo-Saxons, in return for immediate recognition of the Lublin committee. But de Gaulle was not deceived. This would moan betraying a perhaps ‘democratic’ but certainly bourgeois Poland in behalf of a perhaps despotic but certainly noncapitalist Poland. And he did not want to take responsibility for an act contrary to “honor and honesty.” (Memoirs, Volume III, p sa.)

In June 1966, Brezhnev and Kosygin dangled an offer of just as real support against the United States, even genuine political leadership in Europe. In exchange they asked for recognition of the German Democratic Republic; that is, “of the two German states.” Be Gaulle brusquely replied that there could be no question of recognizing this “artificial construction. And with that rejoinder the serious conversation came to an end. The balance was nothing but decorations and fine talk.

Of course, the differences between Paris and Washington, between Fans and Bonn, are real in relation to the political future of our continent, its relations with the United States and the best strategy to follow to block the rise of the anti-imperialist and anticapitalist forces in the world.

Be Gaulle seeks a Europe freed largely from American supremacy. He seeks an Atlantic alliance on the basis of equality between North America and a Western Europe combined under his guidance. He favors a more supple policy, with regard to the USSR, which in his opinion should be definitively separated from China and the “extremists” among the revolutionists of the Third World, through some indispensable concessions.

He holds that it is necessary to “relax” the tensions to be able to resolve the questions in dispute, such as the reunification of Germany, while the Americans and the Germans of Bonn maintain that without this reunification no real relaxation is possible in Europe. But at bottom, they all defend a common cause—the cause of Big Capital. They all seek to hold back the enemy—socialism and the peoples of the Third World who are rising and seeking to break out of the capitalist world market. They all seek refuge under the “nuclear umbrella” of the Pentagon, without which they cannot counterbalance Soviet military power on the European continent (if anything confirms this, it is the explosion of the ridiculous French nuclear device in Polynesia which amounts to nothing in face of the power of the USSR). The means may differ, the aim is the same.

In this respect the Soviet Union represents something else again. The means are perhaps the same, but the aim is entirely different. Thus treaties on mutual consultation can be concluded—even by means of a direct telephone line!—treaties on technical cooperation, or whatever cultural and commercial exchanges are desired; the fundamental opposition between the interests of the French bourgeoisie and the Soviet leaders will by no means make it possible to form a genuine alliance in the present world context.

The Soviet leaders are aware of the weakness of the present Communist parties in Western Europe (for which they are in part responsible). They are aware of the temporary stabilization of caitalism in this part of the world (which they largely contributed to). From this they draw the conclusion that it is necessary to return to a policy that seeks to ‘exploit the interimperialist contradictions,” as before the second world war. They commit an error in believing that de Gaulle is ready to follow them into a tÃªtei-tÃªte, when he seeks in reality only to increase his power and prestige within the Atlantic Alliance

The French Communist leaders would obviously make a still greater error in concluding that the time has come for an ‘agonizing revision” of their political orientation in France, as in 1935 or 1944.

It is true that the policy of the USSR places them before a cruel dilemma; they no longer know if they should applaud or complain when the Soviet crowds cheer the person who remains, until proved otherwise, the fiercest and most dangerous class enemy of the French workers. If they oppose him, they are tempted to make an alliance with de Gaulle’s pro-American adversaries like Nollet and Nitterrand—and then the capitals of Eastern Europe are not very contented. And if they approve, what remains of their role as an opposition in France? There remains the socialist perspective which stands in complete opposition to the politics of de Gaulle; but the leaders of the French Communist party do not think this is any more “realistic’ than do the Social Democratic leaders of the SF10, or even the technocratic ideologists of neocapitalism.

That will the practical results of the trip amount to? The American Newsweek summarized the situation as follows: “At least he will have succeeded in engaging the Russians in a new diplomatic dialogue with the West.” That puts it in a nutshell. At a time when the intensification of the American aggression against the Vietnamese people makes a public dialogue between Moscow and Washington more difficult, de Gaulle is playing, objectively, the role of go-between for the Atlantic Alliance as a whole Thanks to him, the head of one of the capitalist states in this alliance has been acclaimed by crowds in the Soviet Union. For the first time in many years they have been shown a face of capitalism which their own leaders now say is benevolent, attractive, peaceful, full of good intentions toward the peoples of the world.

Pravda in connection with this trip, talks about an ‘irreversible process.” Let them beware of certain processes, which while still reversible, bode nothing good for the USSR. By attending mass in Leningrad, de Gaulle, like a good politician, was already prepa:ing for his coming trip to Poland. Rumania, ceaselessly increasing its trade with the West, already told the Russians in Bucharest that it would like to see the Warsaw pact modified just as de Gaulle wants to modify NATO. Decidely, if things are in movement, thanks not a little to the general, not everything is stirring in favor of socialism and not everything is stirring against the interests of American imperialism.

Since I started using this app, I have travelled 1,482,337 miles. I LOVE this app. I travel a lot for work (and holidays) and being able to email my booking confirmations, private and work and have them all in one place is fantastic. It changed my travel routine. Rather then show up with a folder of different printed confirmations, it’s all laid out in one place. My wife and I share our itineraries and it’s great for family trips where we book different parts. Its like I have a brilliant assistant with programming knowledge. Just bring a battery pack for your phone after a long flight :-) I try hundreds of apps each year but after many years using this app it is still the most useful thing on my phone after the calendar and mail app. Seriously, I have emailed booking confirmations as PDF’s, word docs, email etc from some really funky airlines and it’s rarely missed a beat. My only suggestion to the developers to improve on perfection might be to tie in with one of the flight map apps so I can see on the plane which country I am flying over. Those guys have nothing like the capability you do, so a tie in could be cool. Thanks again for all the travel hassle you guys saved!

Freakishly frustrating and sometimes great.

User interface is inadequate from iPad and iPhone. No ability to copy(duplicate) an event. No drag and drop. No ability to have overlapping vacation schedules and keep the entries separated between two users. Unable to add some details for some events, for example, an end time not available for some activities. Notes not available to add in some events. Unclear interface caused me to accidentally merge two different vacations into one “trip”, losing duplicate records which had extensive comments added. Under a cruise ship port (e.g. The port for Athens) overwrites all port notes for other ports on the same cruise. Look, if you are going to another port, why would you want to a) loose your comments regarding transportation in Venice and b) what use would Athens transportation have on the day you are in Venice. I have loved this software. I’ve used it for a half dozen trips or more. The software successfully imports most airline tickets, train tickets, and hotel reservations, etc. via a simple forwarded email. This part is very elegant in creating a calendar of a trip. It is really useful. Just travel alone or have the exact same itinerary as anyone you travel with. With this combined trip, I want to pull out my hair.

Favorite App

I travel often both for business and with my big family. This has been a game changer. Not to have to print out anything and have everything in order with added details on telephone numbers, weather, directions links. besides the ease of just forwarding play tickets, car rentals, hotel and flights, it takes a cruise itinerary and put some in the correct day saying where you’re going and when you get off to the ports and when you have to be back on the ship etc. So excellent. A side benefit I found now that I’ve been using it for 10 years is I have a whole travel journal right here in the app. Can look up previous hotels, miscellaneous companies used for transportation and whatever. Request for the developers: when I have a listing of flights etc. (particularly for more than one person), the apps at-a-glance screen does not have the name listed. So you have to go into that plan and scroll down and Click under passengers and in that page it’ll show you who the reservation is for. It would be much more convenient to have the name on the first or second line for a quick reference.
