West Ham Legends tour at London Stadium – a review

This is a collaborative post.

I have shared previously that Ben is a huge football fan and he loves stadium tours. We have been on the Wembley tour , Liverpool tour , Newcastle tour and Manchester United tour previously so when we were offered the chance to review the West Ham Legends tour with Buy a Gift , I knew he would love it.

legends tour london stadium

The difference between a West Ham tour and the Legends tour

There are a few different options available for a stadium tour at the London Stadium, the home of West Ham United. We did the Legends tour with Tony Gale.

Whilst we have not done the standard West Ham tour we have done tours at other stadiums and read about the difference and discussed it with the staff so I think I can give you a fair description of the differences.

legends tour london stadium

A standard stadium tour involves being taken around the stadium by a member of the stadium staff. All areas are covered from hospitality to the pitch side and including the dressing rooms, media areas and dugouts. Essentially a great tour of everything there is to see at the stadium.

A Legends tour covers the exact same areas of the stadium so you do not see anything extra. The difference is that a West Ham legend, someone who used to play for West Ham, shows you around with the tour guide.

legends tour london stadium

The legend tells you stories and experiences on the way around the tour and gives you their opinions on areas as a player. For example, whether the layout of the dressing room is good for team talks and how the managers they played under talked to them to motivate them. This is full of anecdotes and stories that a regular member of stadium staff just can’t share in the same way.

The tour with the legend also includes a signed photo of you with the legend (one per group) and more photos can be bought. They are taken during the tour in front of a green screen and signed in front of you. I have not used the purchased photos in this review due to copyright but the photos were great!

Who was the Legend?

We had a tour with Tony Gale , probably one of the most famous 1980’s West Ham players. He played as a defender for West Ham between 1984 and 1994 and made 300 league appearances for them.

He is now a commentator for them so he was able to give us a lot of stories of how it was playing for West Ham as well as his experiences as a commentator.

Tony Gale was friendly and approachable and I would definitely recommend choosing a tour with him. I am sure the other legends available are just as good but we didn’t experience them so I can not comment on how they approach tours.

Ben’s views

Ben is a huge football fan and whilst he isn’t specifically a West Ham fan he thoroughly enjoyed the tour and meeting Tony Gale.

Throughout the tour Ben found different things to enjoy and much to my surprise, having been on lots of football stadium tours with him, he loved every minute of it.

The tour group consisted of around 30 people altogether. Ben, due to his autism, can find big groups difficult to cope with but he found this group a perfect size. There was a mixture of young and older people and not all were big hammers fans.

legends tour london stadium

My views as a non-football fan

I am not a football fan so going on these football stadium tours with Ben can be a little dull. After all, seeing the dressing rooms for different teams are essentially the same but with different shirts so it means nothing to me at all!

The West Ham Legends tour was very different we had predominantly Tony Gale talking to us as he showed us around as well as the tour guide Steve. I thoroughly enjoyed it as it was so much more than “here is the dressing room where ….. motivates his team, feel free to take as many photos as you like”.

legends tour london stadium

I loved hearing all the anecdotes and stories everywhere on the tour. I realised that being a football commentator is much harder than I had imagined. Between Steve and Tony, it was both an informative tour as well as fun and enjoyable for football fans as well as people like me!

I can honestly say that I really enjoyed the tour and was impressed at how friendly and interactive it was in comparison to other tours I have been on. If you are debating whether to go with a football fan on a stadium tour then I highly recommend this one.

Ben, a teenage boy at the West Ham stadium tour with the pitch and seating behind him, he has a huge smile and is loving being there.

Cost of the Legends tour

We were gifted the tour from Buyagift in return for reviewing it for you however the tickets are usually £90 for two if bought through Buyagift.

The legends tour is more expensive than the standard tour but in my opinion very worth it and a perfect gift for a West Ham fan for Christmas or a birthday.

legends tour london stadium

If bought through the stadium directly they are the same price but if you are new to Buyagift you can get an introductory offer! So, for this reason, I would definitely recommend going through Buyagift!

I have previously found for tickets for other places like The Shard can be cheaper when bought directly from Buyagift so do remember to check when booking anything like this.

Tips for your visit

I would highly recommend if you are driving to park in the Westfield, Stratford Shopping centre and ensure you spend a little time there too. There are lots of eateries and shops to peruse whilst in the area and the car park seemed pretty secure too. The walk from the car to the stadium was around 5-10 minutes depending on walking speed.

Arrive in plenty of time before the tour as it will start on time and you don’t want to miss it. The tour is booked downstairs in the shop outside the stadium and the group is collected from there to go into the stadium. In this area, there is a cafe and toilets so there really is no harm in arriving early and having a drink first.

legends tour london stadium

There is time on the legends tour for you to have an item or two signed by the Legend himself so if you have something you would love to be signed be sure to take it with you. It doesn’t have to be a shirt, it could simply be a book like this .

If you go on the Tony Gale tour there is nothing specifically with him on in the gift shop so it might need to be something generic for West Ham or buy something beforehand.

After the tour, if you are looking for somewhere to eat then Westfield, Stratford is perfect as there are lots of restaurants but I would recommend booking in advance. We had booked in advance but noticed a huge queue of people waiting for tables!

What stadium is the MLB London Series being played at? London Stadium capacity, attendance

By terrence jordan | jun 7, 2024.

London Stadium

Major League Baseball is coming to England this weekend for the third iteration of the MLB London Series , a two-game set between the New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies .

Just as the NFL's annual international games have allowed the league to showcase the game abroad, MLB's London Series, along with the Seoul Series, the Mexico City Series, and the Dominican Republic Series, has been a huge success for Major League Baseball in broadening the game's appeal on a global scale.

Not only does the London Series give British fans the rare chance to see baseball played at its highest level, it also gives American fans the opportunity to learn more about England's sports scene.

For example, London Stadium, where both games will be played this weekend, has a rich sports history despite only being completed 12 years ago. What else should fans know about one of England's premier multi-sport venues?

London Stadium capacity, attendance, and more

Depending on the event, London Stadium's capacity can range from 55,000 to 80,000. The configuration used for MLB's London Series will allow for between 55,000 and 60,000 fans, while concerts allow for up to 80,000.

West Ham United, the English Premier League team that has called London Stadium home since 2016, has a capacity of 62,500 fans for its matches. West Ham played its last home game of the season on May 11th, a 3-1 win over Luton Town, but ended its season with a 3-1 road loss eight days later to eventual Premier League champion Manchester City.

London Stadium was originally known as Olympic Stadium, due to its being constructed for the London 2012 Summer Olympics and the London 2012 Paralympic Games. The opening and closing ceremonies of both events were hosted there, as were various track and field events.

London Stadium has hosted various events in addition to the Olympics, Paralympics, and Premier League, including the 2015 Race of Champions motorsport event and the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

Attendance for the London Series averaged 55,000 in the two games between the Cubs and Cardinals last year. Tickets are still available for this weekend's games.

FIRST BATCH OF LEGENDS TOURS CONFIRMED FOR 2019/20 SEASON

legends tour london stadium

London Stadium tours have outlined their first set of Legends’ tours for the 2019/20 season.

Alvin Martin, Phil Parkes, Martin Allen, Tony Cottee and Alan Taylor will lead a tour of the venue, which also includes a Q&A session with the West Ham legend in question, and a personalised signed photo with each booking group.

Legends tours last two hours, and are priced at £40 for adults, £25 for juniors, with concession rates of £30 for students and over 65s.

Alvin Martin will lead the first legends tour of the season, with two windows open on Sunday 25 August (11am & 2pm). The former defender played just shy of 600 games for the Hammers over 21 years, and was part of the 1980 FA Cup winning side. He also represented England on 17 occasions, and has garnered a post-playing career as a pundit for both Sky Sports and TalkSport.

Book on a tour with Alvin Martin here…

The next legend to lead a tour will be the returning Phil Parkes, on Sunday 15 September (11am and 2pm). The famed goalkeeper played alongside Alvin Martin in the Hammers’ FA Cup winning team, and was named as the Hammers’ all-time greatest ‘keeper by fans in 2003.

Popular Hammers legend Martin Allen can be relied on for quite the tour experience! Renowned in football for his vibrant personality and firecracker approach to the game, Allen made 190 appearances for the Hammers between 1989 and 1995, and has had a lengthy managerial career, beginning as assistant at Reading in 2002 and most-recently as Chesterfield Manager in 2018.

Martin will be leading his tours at 11am and 2pm on Sunday 29 September.

Book on a tour with Martin Allen here…

Tony Cottee has been a regular fixture for our Stadium tours, a favourite among fans who offers a unique insight into the Club. Tony will return this season on Sunday 10 November. His goalscoring record for the Hammers through the 1980s was almost beyond compare - registering 92 across his six years with the club, and all before turning 24.

He has since become renowned as a commentator and media personality, regularly behind the microphone for Sky Sports.

Book on a tour with Tony Cottee here…

FA Cup hero Alan Taylor rounds off the first programme of legends tours on Sunday 1 December. The former striker scored twice in the Hammers’ successful Wembley final in 1975, cementing his place in Club folklore.

West Ham fans won’t recognise London Stadium as timelapse footage shows stunning transformation for MLB London Series

  • Joe Moore , Assistant Editor

West Ham’s London Stadium has had a dramatic makeover this summer as baseball returns to the UK.

Hammers supporters may not recognise their home ground, which has been transformed from football stadium into a state-of-the-art ballpark for the latest MLB London Series.

The London Stadium has been transformed from football ground to world-class ballpark

The football pitch has been replaced by a baseball diamond, astro turf outfield and reconfigured stands to give the London Stadium a completely different look.

The New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies are the latest MLB outfits heading to the capital for two days of blockbuster baseball on June 8 and June 9.

It took 18 days for the impressive transformation to be completed, with MLB granted access on May 20 - just one day after West Ham’s final game of the Premier League season against champions Man CIty.

Over 144,000 square feet of synthetic turf and 345 tonnes of infield clay has been installed on top of West Ham’s football pitch, forming for the outfield, diamond and pitcher’s mound.

Baseball superstar reveals he supports Chelsea because of ‘savage’ Blues legend

But don’t worry Hammers, the hallowed turf is protected by a layer of special flooring to ensure its it good shape for the next campaign.

The entire MLB playing surface was stored after last year’s event - between Chicago Cubs and St Louis Cardinals - to be reused this year.

Two giant 18-metre-tall foul poles have also been installed, as well as batting cages, dugouts and along 46,000 square feet of netting to protect fans behind the foul line from being stuck by errant balls.

The stadium’s baseball clubhouses, which have been a permanent fixture since 2023 and are now included in the stadium tour - have been rebranded in Mets and Phillies livery . They sit on top of the 100m warm up track in the west stand and feature 50 individual player lockers, managers offices, break out areas, TV screens and sofas.

Before - West Ham's home stadium as you'd normally see it during the Premier League season

Following the series, the entire field will be removed in just five days, with the start of the 2024/25 Premier League season only ten weeks away.

The food menu across the weekend will also be unrecognisable to West Ham fans.

They’ll be no half-time pies or your run-of-the-mill burgers, fans at the London Stadium will be treated to super-sized offerings of all the American classics.

The Knuckleball burger features two prime beef patties with house-made sauce, cheese, bacon, crispy onions and pulled pork on a brioche bun

New York and Philadelphia are both represented with a NYC deli-style pastrami sandwich and the famous Philly cheesesteak, while burger fans can chow down on double-decked Knuckleball.

The especially hungry can tuck into the two-foot long 'boomstick' hot dog.

Far from your simple wiener in a bun, this baseball bat sized pork behemoth is loaded with braised beef and chilli, topped with jalapenos, nacho cheese and sour cream - and weighs in at a whopping 1.5kg.

Going to Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in Edinburgh? All you need to know about her Murrayfield Stadium dates

Taylor Swift on the Eras Tour

Swifties across the country have been reaching whole new levels of excitement as Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour lands in the UK this week.

After tickets sold out last year for the hotly-anticipated dates , Taylor has been performing across The US and Europe to thousands of adoring fans .

The Blank Space singer, 33, treats Swifties to three hours of hits each night, playing tracks from releases such as Fearless and Red, plus her latest number one album, The Tortured Poets Department .

Ahead of her concerts in Liverpool , Cardiff , London , and Dublin , the Grammy winner is playing three concerts in the Scottish city of Edinburgh – on Friday, June 7, Saturday, June 8 and Sunday, June 9.

With Paramore as her support act, one of the world’s biggest pop stars will perform at the BT Murrayfield Stadium.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at the venue where Taylor is going to be strutting her stuff…

What is the capacity of Murrayfield Stadium Edinburgh?

Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh

According to VisitScotland , BT Murrayfield Stadium is the largest stadium in Scotland and can hold 67,144 people.

Murrayfield is usually a sports stadium and is commonly referred to as the home of Scottish Rugby.

On April 21, 1925, Scotland marked a triumph over their ‘Auld Enemy’ rivals, England, in achieving a Grand Slam with the inauguration of the Murrayfield Stadium.

Taylor Swift is not the first famous musician to play at the stadium – One Direction, Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Robbie Williams, Foo Fighters, Madonna, and The Rolling Stones have all chosen the venue for their Scottish tour shows in the past.

What is the seating plan of Murrayfield Stadium Edinburgh?

Murrayfield comprises two tiers of banked seating and a large standing-only area in front of the stage.

Murrayfield Stadium seating plan

What were the Eras Tour ticket packages for the Edinburgh show?

Depending on what Swifties paid for their tickets and the packages they opted for, they’ll be in different parts of the venue.

  • Seated ticket – £58.65 – £194.75
  • General admission standing – £110.40
  • Front standing – £172.25.

You can find out more with our complete guide to Taylor’s VIP packages for a refresher on what merchandise and extra goodies you should receive if you purchased one.

Does Murrayfield Stadium have a roof and what will the Edinburgh weather be like?

Taylor Swift on the Eras Tour

While we can always rely on Taylor Swift to show up and put on an epic performance, alas, the weather isn’t always on our side .

Consequently, it might be worth taking a waterproof jacket to the Edinburgh dates, just in case!

While the sun is likely to be out at some point and chances of a downpour are slim, there is a small chance of a shower this weekend.

Otherwise, it’s looking to be dry for the gigs at Murrayfield, albeit a bit breezy for fans in the higher sections of the stadium.

So, make sure you either come prepared or do enough dancing to get your blood pumping – not that we need to tell you twice.

What to expect from Taylor’s Edinburgh shows

Taylor Swift on the Eras Tour

Taylor Swift will perform a revamped Eras Tour set in the UK , featuring changes to her setlist after the show’s American run.

The global start initially rejigged her concert ahead of the European leg, which kicked off in Paris at the beginning of May.

She cut several songs from previous eras, such as Long Live from Speak Now and Tolerate It from evermore.

But, to make up for it, Taylor is showcasing her latest record in all its glory, adding tracks such as But Daddy I Love Him, Down Bad, Fortnight, The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived, and I Can Do It With A Broken Heart.

It’s safe to say the staging is nothing less than iconic, with several additional costume changes and dance numbers.

As ever, though, Taylor will be singing ‘surprise songs’ on the UK leg, so don’t fret! More recently, the star has been doing ‘mash-ups’ of several hits on both piano and guitar, so start placing your bets, Scottish Swifites, over what you might get…

If you're headed to London but still don't have tickets, don't worry. Tickets are still available for both games on Ticketmaster.

Tickets for Saturday's game can be purchased here , and tickets for Sunday's game can be bought here . MLB is also offering fan experience ticket packages , starting at $785.

Fans can also buy tickets on third-party websites such as StubHub and VividSeats . At last check, it does not appear tickets are being sold on SeatGeek, the official fan ticket marketplace  of MLB.

If you want to head to London for the series but haven't bought plane tickets yet, be prepared to pay. A Google search  showed flights departing from Philadelphia International Airport on June 7 and returning on June 10 cost over $800 — it's cheaper to  fly out of John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

How to get London Series merch

Fans seeking London Series merchandise can buy online  or at the Phillies ' or Mets ' team stores.

The teams are selling MLB World Tour and London Series T-shirts, hoodies, hats, jerseys, posters, koozies and pennant flags. The Mets' website lists a London Series baseball  signed by Jeff McNeil.

London Series merch is also available to buy online at Fanatics.

What to do if you're going to London

If you're traveling to London for the games, there will be plenty to do.

MLB will have a free fan festival at Trafalgar Square  from June 7-9. The festival will include music, merch, batting cages, and a chance for fans from the United Kingdom, Philly, and New York to enjoy baseball and London.

On Friday, June 7, Phillies legend Chase Utley (who said in 2019 he hates the Mets ) and former Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy will participate in a home run derby, and there will be a London Series Pub Quiz afterward.

Fans can also watch both games during the Trafalgar Square Takeover.

The Phanatic has already been through the area in London, walking across The Mall near Buckingham Palace and the Victoria Memorial – while dressed as a Buckingham Palace guard.

Phillies fans can also head to Philadelphia-inspired bar  Passyunk Avenue  in London. The popular bar will have a tailgate, bus tours and other fun events for Philly fans headed to England. More information is available on their website .

Fans can also follow " UK Phillies " on social media. The fan account is run by London native Dave Shaw, who became a Phillies fan in 2012 after attending a game in Philadelphia on the final leg of his backpacking trip across the United States.

"There are a lot of Philly fans based in the U.K. and Europe who are just as hearty as me," Shaw said on a " Gallen of Questions ."

Where to watch if you're staying home in Philadelphia

Not everyone can afford a trip to London, but there are plenty of places in Philly to watch the Phils face the Mets this weekend.

McGillin's Olde Ale House in Center City will host a London watch party on Saturday and launch a Doyle $1 dog day to honor John Doyle . McGillin's will have drink specials and serve its "Phillies-tini."

Founding Fathers on South Street is another place to watch the games — the sports bar serves brunch at 10:30 a.m.

Fans can also head to Xfinity Live! , which will open early at 9 a.m. on Saturday for the Kenny Chesney concert  and Sunday for the Phillies-Mets' 10:10 am. ET start.

The Phillies and Mets are playing in the 2024 MLB London Series. Here's what to know.
