We found travel wallets that are great for navigating old cities around the clock, and travel wallets that can handle all sorts of rugged adventures. We curated all our travel wallets with durability and design in mind, but we also considered features that make each wallet unique in and of its own. The one quality you'll find in each travel wallet? They all are sized to hold an American passport nice and snug. After all, it wouldn't be a travel wallet if it didn't hold your most important papers.

Pioneer's Passport Wallet is wonderfully simple in design and tough as nails thanks to its waterproof ripstop fabric construction. In fact, we found the waterproof ripstop fabric is great for handling humid environments, staying dry and and stiff, as opposed to getting all slimy and flimsy as other travel wallets can become in these climates. As far as stroage goes, it comes with a full length cash pocket, pockets to store up to 8 cards, and a 3D molded passport pocket designed to fit an American passport perfectly snug.

Due to this wallet's construction. look, and function, we found it to be our favorite pick when taking to warm weather vacation and cold weather trips. The material is simply just too good, and you never have to worry about any of the contents sliding out. Simply put, the Pioneer Passport Wallet is capable of all kinds of trips and adventures. This is a quality investment we'd recommend over and over again.

Bellroy makes several great travel wallets, but the wallet we found most like the wallet you probably already carry is the bifold Travel Wallet. It's got a fine all leather make and will hold a passport, cash, train tickets, and up to 10 cards. What's cool is the wallet comes with a micro pen that hangs inside the wallet's spine, which we found to be useful when wanting to write down recommendations of places to visit from friends and other travelers.

Looks can be deceiving due to the wallet's traditional bifold design. It measures 3.8-inches tall by 6-inches wide, so it is big. Overall we find it to be a great minimalist travel wallet with a classic style that blends in nicely in all environments.

This reasonably priced wallet from Fjallraven is made with a durable waxed waterproof canvas and a YKK zippered closure to protect all your documents and cards from the elements. Inside are 5 card pockets, 2 cash pockets, and 1 zippered coin pouch. Looking for the passport pocket? That would be behind the coin pouch—it's a nice and discrete design note, we know.

If you're looking for a rugged wallet with waterproofing and protection but don't want to pay over $100, this is a solid option. Fjallraven fans will see this wallet has the same quality construction like the brand's other gear, which is a great sign because the maker is one of the best valued outdoor brands out there.

The design of a good AirTag wallet is still being perfected, but that doesn't mean we don't like what's already on the market. If you're looking for a travel wallet you can store your AirTag in, this one from Lumberjack Plaid is our latest favorite.

It comes in a sleek and stylish leather (3 colors available) and features a passport pocket, a long pocket for tickets and cash, and 3 card slots. You get all this for $40, which is an excellent value for such a quality wallet. Just be aware the leather can show scratches pretty easily; most notably on the dark leather.

Made to fall in line with all your other Tumi luggage, the Passport Case comes in a sleek, all-black look with more interior space than one might think. We're talking a passport pocket, a billfold compartment, an ID window, 2 slip pockets, and 8 card pockets. You get the best of both worlds with this wallet: great style and high functionality. Well done Tumi, well done.

We get it, many of us aren't jet-setting out of the U.S. several times in a year. Nonetheless it's important to have a passport wallet even if you're only getting out of the country once in a blue moon. For overseas trips that are few and far between, this RFID-blocking leather travel passport case for under $30 on Amazon will do the job. It will also give off style points, as the leather has a nice rich look to it that holds up well when used sparingly.

Due to the stitching and overall quality of the materials we'd say this wallet might not be suitable for high levels of use. But because it carries a high durability and functionality for the price, we recommend it as a great travel wallet for those who might need to take a passport with them only once or twice in a year.

If you want to go with a more secure wallet, this thin travel pouch can be strapped around the waist and hold your passport, cash, cards, and more. The pouch itself has RFID tech built-in so you get another level of safety. Plus the pouch is made from water-resistant ripstop, so you won't have to worry about any of your items getting soaked from rain.

One note to point out is even though the price point of this belt is incredibly good, we believe the thin fabric could wear down faster over time than some of the other wallets on this list.

The Apex wallet is made with fine leather that's heat bonded instead of being stitched. The result is a unique design that, when closed, fully encases the inner contents of the wallet from the outside elements. The Apex will hold a passport, cash, and 2-4 cards. And just like the Travel Wallet, you get a small micro pen that can be stored inside on the wallet's spine.

Handcrafted from USA heritage leather, Shinola's Utility Passport Wallet is truly made to age like fine wine. When opening up the wallet, one side contains a passport pocket while the other has 5 faille-lined pockets for your cards. It's not the most feature-loaded travel wallet on this list, and it's certainly not the cheapest, but if you're looking for something simple and timeless then this is the one.

You're not going to find another travel wallet like this one, and that's the point. Texas boot-maker Tecovas went and took the same authentic American alligator leather it uses for its boots and crafted the material into a passport case. The result is a one-of-a-kind piece with a passport pocket and 4 exterior card pockets. What's cool is you can even monogram it.

Of course the price point on this wallet is almost like buying a luxury good, but really the only qualm we have with the wallet is its availability. Sometimes it's popularity gets the best of it, and so you might have to turn to the Ostrich Passport Case or the original Passport Case —two excellent alternatives, no less.

Malbon Golf Yacht Club Passport Holder

Yacht Club Passport Holder

The streetwear-inspired golf brand Malbon Golf has been turning out tons of cool pieces this year. One of its products that has flown under-the-radar is this pebbled leather passport holder. We were surprised to open it up and see tons of card space to go with the passport pocket. And as far as style goes, it comes with cool embossments on the front and inner pocket and is available in three colors.

Tanner Goods Leather Passport Travel Wallet

Leather Passport Travel Wallet

If you liked the full leather of the Shinola travel wallet but wished it had a different interior configuration, then this travel wallet from Tanner Goods is a great alternative. Inside is a passport pocket with a small card pocket on top of the passport flap, plus two additional card slots on the other side.

The wallet might not hold a lot, but if you want a minimalist leather wallet with great style and a thin silhouette, then you'll be happy with this choice.

Zero Grid Travel Wallet Passport Holder

Travel Wallet Passport Holder

Similar to the belted travel wallet we featured earlier, this passport holder can be used as a sling bag and is made with waterproof ripstop and covered with RFID blocking material. What's cool is it zips shut, closing in the passport and up to 10 cards that can fit on the inside. You also get a small stylus that you can hang on the wallet's spine.

What to Consider Before Buying a Travel Wallet

line

Buying a quality travel wallet is going to look a lot like buying your everyday wallet, but the two are not the same. Here's what you need to know.

  • Durability: Making sure your travel wallet is tough and made of good materials is of utmost importance. After all, this is your last line of defense to your passport—the most important document you need when traveling overseas. This prior notion is why we loved reviewing travel wallets made from tear-resistant and water-resistant materials (like the Pioneer Travel Wallet). Premium leather is also a good material to protect your passport, as the leather provides a thick layer to keep moisture and dust from getting to your papers.
  • Security Features: Some travel wallets comes with RFID (radio-frequency identification) lining to help prevent RFID theft. It's true this type of crime doesn't happen a lot, but it is possible, and so buying a travel wallet with RFID lining does add a level of security to your essentials. Another security feature to look for are zippered or snap closures that help keep your passport and cards sealed off. We like these closures because it helps limit the chances of any items accidentally falling out when traveling—which happens more than one might think.
  • AirTag Tracking: Although we only have one AirTag travel wallet we like right now, we anticipate more of these types of wallets to hit the market in the coming year. AirTag wallets have become a huge hit thanks to their tracking abilities, and so any travel wallet that can incorporate an AirTag in a slimming and discrete way should be considered on your shortlist of what travel wallets to buy.

Can You Use a Passport Covers as A Wallet?

commerce breaker

Travel wallets, also sometimes referred to as passport wallets, are the best possible choice for carrying your passport and your cash and cards. Travel wallets are not to be confused with passport covers, which are simply covers you can slide over your passport to add a level of protection.

Passport covers do theoretically have space where you could slide some cash plus 1-2 cards inside, but those spaces oftentimes make your valuables prone to falling out. A passport cover is not designed to hold anything more than a passport, and so whatever else you put in there is going to be like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. Stick to a travel wallets for cash, card, and passport carry.

Why Trust Us

In order to keep up with new new designs and releases, the MH tech and gear team is continually testing all of the latest everyday carry accessories to make sure our recommendations reflect the top products within each space.

When it comes to travel wallets, we acquire and call in the latest releases to test, and then we take them out into the real world. At any given point, writers and editors in our office are traveling, and so we plan accordingly whenever we are going to be up in the air to take one or two travel wallets with us to see how they perform. Lastly, we take a hands-on look at the travel wallets up close. We inspect everything from the material to the build of the wallet to determine it's durability and whether or not the price point reflects the overall quality.

How We Selected

line

Our MH commerce team thoroughly researched and tested dozens of the best travel wallets, from budget to designer to premium, gift-worthy models. We noted everything from how snug the wallet fit an American passport to how the interior card slots were organized. We also considered fabric quality (especially when it came to leather) and price. The list above represents our honest picks for the best travel wallets of 2023.

Now, you  could spend a fat chunk of $$$ on the WRONG present for someone. Wrong size hiking boots, wrong fit backpack, wrong shape sleeping bag… As any adventurer will tell you, gear is a personal choice.

So give the adventurer in your life the gift of convenience: buy them an REI Co-op gift card!  REI is The Broke Backpacker’s retailer of choice for ALL things outdoors, and an REI gift card is the perfect present you can buy from them. And then you won’t have to keep the receipt. 😉

The best travel wallet for one person isn’t necessarily the best travel wallet for the next person in the queue. So which is the best travel wallet for you? Here are a few points to take note of when working out which of our top picks might be the best for you.

Most of the travel wallets in our review list are made from water-resistant synthetic materials, which are ideal for anyone worried about getting caught in the rain (or even ruined by a splash of spilt coffee). But we’ve also covered a few travel wallets made in faux or real leather, for that extra look of sophistication!

Do you want your travel wallet to contain RFID-protection ? Firstly, let’s explain exactly what RFID stands for: Radio-Frequency Identification Devices. Basically, the wallets that promise RFID-protection stop electronic pickpockets from stealing your data by scanning the data stored on credit cards, identity cards, and even in passports, which could then be used to spend, spend, spend, or even duplicate your identity. You have been warned!

Frequency of use

If you’re only going to use your travel wallet once or twice a year, you’re probably going to be looking for a travel wallet at the lower end of the price bracket. However, if you’re a regular traveler, you definitely do get what you pay for, so keep this in mind when working out how to choose the best travel wallet for you!

Still have some questions? No problem! We’ve listed and answered the most commonly asked questions below. Here’s what people usually want to know:

What makes a travel wallet so different?

Travel wallets need to be more durable and offer more organisation than normal wallets. In the best case, they’re also made from cut-proof material.

Are there wallets that fit passports?

Yes, the VULKIT Passport Holder Wallet fits all of your cards, money and even your passport. It’s obviously not the size that you can put into your pocket, but to keep all of your valuables together, it’s perfect.

What is the safest travel wallet?

The Pacsafe RFIDsafe V50 RFID Blocking Bi-Fold Wallet is a great anti-theft wallet. It is fully RFID-protected, meaning data thieves are unable to scan your credit card or ID details.

What is the overall best travel wallet?

Our favorite is the Pacsafe V50 RFID Blocking Bi-Fold Wallet . It offers plenty of compartments which makes organisation a breeze.

Travel wallets are a useful way to keep your passport, cards, and money all in one place. Designed to be compact yet spacious, they’re a handy tool to hold your most valuable items all together and safe from loss, damage, or theft.

Travel Wallet

When you’re heading overseas, your passport and your money are just about the most important items you’ll need to take with you. Making sure these difficult-to-replace possessions are kept safely about your person while you’re away calls for a special kind of purse or wallet that’s both compact and secure.

To add an extra layer of protection to your credit and debit cards, many travel wallets are made using RFID-blocking material. This specially-designed lining prevents the data from your cards from being read or copied by unscrupulous thieves or tech-savvy pickpockets, anywhere in the world.

Of course, you could take your regular wallet with you, but why would you want to when there are so many great travel wallets that can offer you numerous benefits?

Here are some features you should consider before you make your purchase.

When you’re out exploring the world, the last thing you need is to be weighed down. Opt for either a small and straightforward travel wallet that will keep your cards and cash close by, or choose a larger model that can also carry your passport and travel documents while still maintaining a slim, compact profile.

RFID Protection

Modern-day travel wallets are often equipped with RFID-blocking material on the inside. This smart addition helps to protect against electronic pickpocketing and prevents criminals from accessing your data.

You should also consider more traditional safety measures like slash-proof straps and material and superstrong zippers or snaps that will keep your wallet securely fastened.

Material and Durability

A travel wallet is about both form and function. Just because you want it to be extra secure and super compact, it doesn’t mean it can’t look good, too. You can find wallets in a huge variety of designs and materials.

Leather is durable and sophisticated, while plastic is easy to clean and difficult to damage. Nylon composite fabrics are also popular as they’re very lightweight and designed to last.

It’s important to remember the adage “buy cheap, buy twice.” Prevent this by investing in the best quality wallet you can find in your price range.

Organization

While your regular wallet may be crammed full of old receipts, loyalty cards, and other day-to-day nonsense, your travel wallet will only need to hold the bare essentials.

Look for a wallet that has enough slots to hold your credit cards, a flat opening for notes, and a sealed section for coins. If you’re planning on carrying your passport, make sure your wallet is large enough to contain it.

Bellroy Travel Wallet In Essex England

Why We Like It: A professional-looking option that includes a pen.

What You Should Know: The hidden pocket flap is flimsy.

Bellroy’s Travel Wallet is a popular and competent offering that looks professional and has thoughtful internal organization. You can slide more than one passport inside, and there’s a divider in the money pocket to separate different currencies. Or, slide a boarding pass in one and your cash in the other.

Although the wallet looks similar in size to a standard wallet, it has a much larger footprint. This keeps it from fitting inside your front pocket and away from most back pockets. However, It should fit inside your sling , coat pocket, or daypack .

Though the exterior scratches and scuffs easily, it offers a unique, rugged, professional look that we dig. Plus, it comes with a micro-pen! That’s great for filling out your customs form on the plane before landing. What else could you ask for from a travel wallet?

Fjallraven Passport Wallet Gift Guide

Why We Like It: Internal organization feels more like a wallet with space for extras.

What You Should Know: It is a tad too big for a pocket but too small to require a sling.

The Fjallraven Passport Wallet utilizes G-1000 fabric, which we’re used to seeing on other products from the brand. It’s durable, looks professional, and makes the color pop. Paired with YKK zippers, this is a passport wallet that you can rely on for years to come.

The internal organization can handle your travel documents, credit cards, and more than one passport if you pack it wisely. Given how much you can fit inside, this wallet is larger than your daily carry, but it feels soft in your hand and looks professional and fun at the same time.

If you own other Fjallraven gear, their Passport Wallet will fit right into your kit.

Best for: Professional Travelers

Pioneer Passport Wallet Usage 1

Why We Like It: The use of premium, sturdy materials goes a long way.

What You Should Know: There’s only one place to put your passport.

If durable materials are your thing, look no further than the Pioneer Passport Wallet. In addition to having space for your important travel documents, the nylon shell is extraordinarily tough and can handle whatever journey you have planned next. It also has a DWR coating to shield your sensitive information from the elements.

The interior design is simple, which ensures you can access everything quickly. Both the interior and exterior are minimalistic, which is great for looks, but may leave something to be desired for those who like to bring a ton of gear.

Whereas this is an excellent option for those looking for a passport wallet for just the essentials, if you want the best travel wallet for the whole nine yards, this might not be the right choice for you.

Best for: Relaxed Travelers

Zero Grid Passport Wallet Review

Why We Like It: It can fit a lot of gear for its small footprint.

What You Should Know: The materials aren’t very sturdy for rugged adventures.

At first glance, the Zero Grid Passport Wallet looks a bit cheap. However, what it lacks stylistically, it makes up for in gear storage. On the interior, you can stow your passport on either side, leaving the other for your cards and cash. There’s even an exterior pocket that’s handy for waiting in line at the coffee shop or food truck.

This travel wallet closes with a YKK zipper and utilizes ripstop nylon, which is lightweight and fairly durable. It isn’t the best choice for a rugged adventure, but it’ll hold up well for most use cases.

If the small size doesn’t suit your needs, Zero Grid makes a larger Passport Holder with enough space for an entire family. Plus, the included pen is nearly twice as large; what a deal! This comes in handy for filling out customs forms and writing down directions.

Pacsafe RFIDsafe Compact Travel Organizer Review

Why We Like It: The dedicated change purse is ideal for places where cash rules.

What You Should Know: Although plentiful, the internal organization can be daunting.

Pacsafe is known for its products that deter theft while traveling. Although their Compact Travel Organizer doesn’t have any of the unique locking features as some of their slings we’ve tested, it has RFID-blocking technology and is a capable travel wallet.

The exterior is crafted from recycled polyester and is PFC-free, which is an excellent shout from an environmental standpoint. A small zippered pocket on the exterior works well for change or if you’re waiting in line at a cash-only joint and don’t want to wave bills around beforehand.

This passport wallet is large, but not so large that you’ll feel awkward holding onto it for a few minutes at a restaurant or shop. The interior organization is thoughtful and easy to organize, so you’ll be able to quickly access your gear no matter where you end up.

Away Passport Holder Review

Why We Like It: Unique design doesn’t fold, ensuring no wasted space.

What You Should Know: It can be hard to see the cards inside the wallet.

Most of the travel wallets on this list share one feature—a fold. We’re used to seeing non-folding models in the everyday carry world, but for a passport wallet, it feels wasteful. Enter the Away Passport Holder!

The design ensures easy access to your passport and gear because you don’t need to open a fold before grabbing it. This does heighten the chance that dirt and debris will slide inside and makes it a little harder to see cards in poor light, but once you get used to it, this isn’t an issue.

Best of all, this travel wallet from Away looks professional and feels durable. Plus, if you have larger pockets on your clothing, you may be able to carry it without needing a sling or daypack!

Best for: Frugal Travelers

AmazonBasics RFID Travel Passport Wallet In Essex, England

Why We Like It: There’s enough room for everything in your wallet and then some.

What You Should Know: You’ll need to stow it in a daypack or other large gear.

We know what you’re thinking—an AmazonBasics travel wallet? Stick with us. It might look like the little folder that the check comes in at a restaurant, but the AmazonBasics RFID Travel Passport Wallet can fit you, your partner, and your family’s travel documents in one easy-to-access location.

In addition to holding everyone’s passports, you will be able to stow cards, cash, and other gear inside. The exterior has a loop to secure it inside your pack for extra peace of mind. The design is thoughtfully crafted, so you know where all your important documents are at all times.

Best of all, it comes at a budget-friendly price so you can spend more on wontons, not a travel wallet.

Zoppen Passport Holder

Why We Like It: Clutch-style design looks as comfortable at a restaurant as at the airport.

What You Should Know: Button closure can be finicky.

Most travel wallets we’ve come across have a more masculine style. There are options for those who prefer something different, but they’re not as common. The ZOPPEN Mulit-purpose Rfid Blocking Passport Holder Travel Wallet utilizes a clutch-style design that fits in no matter where you end up.

The exterior is crafted from faux leather that looks professional and holds up well over time. The snap closure can be tricky, especially when not fully packed. There are a ton of fun colorways to choose from, and this travel wallet won’t break the bank, either.

The interior has a soft accent material to ensure your gear stays safe and scratch-free. It unfolds like a pamphlet, so you’ll have enough room for everything you need, from Detroit to Delhi.

Herschel Supply Co. Raynor Passport Holder Showcase

Why We Like It: It has a casual design that feels at home no matter where you end up.

What You Should Know: Sliding your passport in and out isn’t always the quickest.

The Herschel Supply Co. Raynor may be described as a passport holder, but it operates like a travel wallet. It’s crafted from leatherette, or synthetic leather, which is durable but shows cracks over time. These haven’t compromise the material in our experience, though they are noticeable.

The interior has a simple design that can hold a few cards, cash, and a passport. The organization doesn’t try to do or carry too much and ensures you don’t overpack in the process.

However, it’s pretty large for what you can stow inside. It feels more like a standard model than a travel wallet. That might not work for some, but if you want to use something that reminds you of what you’re used to, it will do that perfectly. The model we have on hand has a black-and-white colorway that’s sharp-looking and unique.

Trayvax Explorer Passport Wallet

Why We Like It: American leather looks professional and rugged simultaneously.

What You Should Know: You can’t fit a ton of gear inside for how large it is.

We’ve tested a lot of Trayvax Wallets here at Pack Hacker. Though their minimalist wallets are mostly made of metal, the Explorer Passport Wallet has a unique look all its own. It’s crafted from genuine American leather that looks professional and rugged simultaneously.

The angled corners look almost art-deco and add to this wallet’s stand-out design. It only comes in brown, but we feel that color suits it well.

On the interior, there’s a window so you can see what card you’re sliding out. There isn’t much room for gear here, but there’s enough space for your travel essentials. In addition to offering an excellent passport wallet, Trayvax has a warranty that can be relied on. The warranty spans 65 years and covers any issues with materials or their work from general wear and tear.

Red Wing Shoes Passport Wallet

Why We Like It: A classic look that your grandfather and grandchild can appreciate.

What You Should Know: The fold is rounded, so it takes up a lot of space.

Red Wing has been cranking out comfortable boots since just after the turn of the century, but they make other leather goods worth looking at, too. The Red Wing Shoes Passport Wallet is crafted from durable materials and feels as sturdy as we’d expect from such a reliable brand.

On the interior, the two sides are nearly identical. There are slide pockets for your passport(s), two slots for cards, and a larger pocket perfect for cash. There isn’t a good spot for coins, so you might want to have an alternative place for that or avoid carrying it.

Given the durability of the leather, the crease isn’t very flat, which gives this travel wallet a lot of width. It feels more comfortable in a sling or daypack, but you can throw it in your jacket pocket in a pinch.

Best for: Sustainable Travelers

Fjallraven Kanken Travel Wallet Review

Why We Like It: Has enough space to fit small gear inside, so it functions similar to a clutch bag.

What You Should Know: It’s pretty bulky for the storage space you get.

We’ve tested a lot of Fjallraven gear over the years, a lot of which carries the Kanken name. The Fjallraven Kanken Travel Wallet is perfect for someone who already owns gear from the line or is looking for an ecosystem to invest in.

This passport wallet has lots of internal organization for your travel essentials and everyday gear. There’s an exterior phone pocket to keep everything in one place; however, plus-sized phones and large cases might not fit. When you’re phone is stowed inside, you can see the edges, which isn’t the most flattering look.

There are numerous fun colorways, and the styling perfectly fits into the Kanken line. However, it works well with anything colorful. When not fully packed, the top of the wallet caves in a little. This doesn’t affect usage, but it is noticeable.

CODEOFBELL ANNEX CASE

Why We Like It: Enough room to stow your daily essentials and passport.

What You Should Know: It’s a bit bulky, even for a small pouch.

The CODEOFBELL ANNEX CASE isn’t a passport wallet per say, but it works exceptionally well for folks who want to go the extra mile in gear storage. The exterior has a durable shell with ample water resistance, so your gear inside will stay safe.

You can turn the case into a sling or crossbody bag, so you don’t have to worry about whether or not it will fit into your pocket. Though that makes this thing is large and hefty, you can fit more gear inside than in a traditional travel wallet. It utilizes segmentation, separate zippered compartments, and liner pockets to ensure all your gear has a home.

It has a minimalistic design, but the black colorway might not be what everyone looks for in a pouch.

Moment Crossbody Wallet Review

Why We Like It: A simple wallet for those who prefer the option to wear your essentials.

What You Should Know: It looks more like a purse than a wallet.

The Moment Crossbody Wallet is a mini sling that can be used as a wallet. You can carry it with the included wristlet or use the strap to keep your hands free. The design is more feminine, but the colorway lends itself to most outfits and any gender.

The strap clips don’t feel the most secure, but we haven’t had any issues with them coming undone. There’s enough space to segment your gear on the interior but not enough to drown it in organizational bureaucracy. That said, it can feel a bit tight, so it’s best for storing small gear like a phone or chapstick.

Whether at the airport or on a fancy date, the Moment Crossbody Wallet is the best travel wallet that's up for any occasion and ensures all your gear makes it home safely.

So there you have it! Hopefully, by this point, you’ve chosen a few travel wallets that you can choose from for your next trip. Whether you’re heading to Texas or Tazmania, one of the passport wallets on this list will surely get your gear there safely.

Zoppen Travel Wallet

The best versatile travel wallet

If you’re looking for a travel wallet that blends style with substance, we think we’ve found the one. Yes, it’s PU leather not real leather and that slight disappointment is reflected in the reviews, but if you take a look at its neat envelope design and its variety of pockets, you’ll find that there isn’t too much to complain about.

Ekster Parliament Slim Leather Wallet

The best smart travel wallet

Ekster makes a line of voice-activated wallets, including this relatively traditional-looking credit card holder. However, beneath the handcrafted leather look is some serious tech. It's also compatible with Alexa and Google Home, which using a Chipolo tag can make your wallet emit a ring when you ‘say “where’s my wallet?” - pretty cool right!

3. Ekster Parliament Slim Leather Wallet

Losing your valuables is one of the biggest fears while travelling. Can technology help? Ekster makes a line of voice-activated wallets, including this relatively traditional-looking credit card holder. However, beneath the handcrafted leather look is some serious tech; as well as space for nine cards, six of which can be protected by a layer of RFID-block, but the wallet is also compatible with Alexa and Google Home, which using a Chipolo tag can make your wallet emit a ring when you ‘say “where’s my wallet?”

Funded within three hours on Kickstarter, this Ekster wallet also offers worldwide traceability via a smart card so you can tell you where it was last seen on a map. That’s the same technology used by FedEx to track its containers. What’s more, it’s all solar-powered and doesn’t run out of charge for two months.

The best practical travel wallet

Snugpak Grab A5

4. Snugpak Grab A5

If you’re an outdoors type who’s just as likely to find themselves in the wild as in an airport, you’re going to want a travel document holder with special skills. Cue the Grab A5 from sleeping bag-maker Snugpak. As well as documents, the Grab A5 – with is, naturally, the size of A5 paper, so fairly compact – has room for a pen holder and many other items in its small pockets (there’s even a dedicated phone pocket). The document storage section has a waterproof cover, which will add peace of mind if you go out on a hike. Zipped all around, it’s also got a small carry handle.

The best cheap travel wallet

CampTeck Travel Wallet & Organiser Pouch

5. CampTeck Travel Wallet & Organiser Pouch

It's also got RFID-blocking technology built-in to protect everything inside the wallet, which zips shut along three sides. It’s not particularly stylish, but it is very cheap.

The best minimalist travel wallet

Travando Slim Wallet

6. Travando Slim Wallet

This clever bi-fold wallet is crafted in Germany, and it shows. It’s organised so well; there are seven card slots – six on the inside and one on the outside – but despite that it’s a mere 11.9x8.3x1.6 cm. Unlike most modern travel wallets, it’s designed to carry cash, with a stainless steel money clip integrated into the interior that securely grasps bank notes. The Travando is also constructed to protect against data theft by RFiD scanners.

The best travel wallet for RFID protection

Pacsafe RFIDsafe V200 Travel Wallet

7. Pacsafe RFIDsafe V200 Travel Wallet

If you’re looking for a no frills travel wallet that that keeps your cards, cash and receipts safe, this Pacsafe wallet could serve you well. While you can see from the design that there is room enough for up to 8 cards, there’s also a window pocket each for your passport and driver’s license and plenty of room for loose change.

The manufacturer promises protection against identity theft, while the bracelet with its handy loop acts as a handy mechanism to prevent you from dropping it in the middle of the airport concourse.

The best waterproof travel wallet

Lifeventure RFID Protected Document Wallet

8. Lifeventure RFID Protected Document Wallet

Thanks to its RFID protection, you don’t need to worry about identity fraud, especially if you’re travelling to areas where that kind of thing is rife, and with a smartphone stash pocket, too, you can make sure all of your necessities are safely tucked away, yet completely accessible for when you need them.

The best compact travel wallet

LifeVenture RFiD Mini Travel Wallet

9. LifeVenture RFiD Mini Travel Wallet

When you’re travelling, you’re going to be on a budget and if you’re planning on backpacking off the beaten track, Lifeventure has made sure this travel wallet is prepared for all circumstances.

Find yourself waist deep in a river? It’s waterproof. Find yourself going through some sketchy looking areas? It protects against Radio-Frequency Identification devices. It boasts pockets for your passport, boarding passes, cash, cards and even your smartphone. It's the perfect compact travel wallet and for the price, and reviewers agree, you can’t beat it.

The best multi pocket travel wallet

Go Travel Document Organiser

10. Go Travel Document Organiser

This travel document holder is the perfect contender for the most amount of pockets featured in a small space competition. There’s several card slots, an ID slot, a travel money zipped pocket, a slot to put your boarding passes and enough slots for several passports, if you’re travelling as a family.

It’s also good to note that this travel wallet provides RFID protection, so you can be completely sure that your identification is safe. Comments suggest that it’s fairly bulky in size, and therefore needs a large pocket for storing it away, aside from that, it’s the perfect practical travel companion.

How to buy the best travel wallet for you

Your choice of travel wallet will partly depend on style. Leather screams ‘sophisticated businessman’, while durable, waterproof materials will appeal to those who only entertain travel-grade products that will last much longer than the air miles you collect.

Having space for passports and cards is standard, but not all travel document holders have space for keys, pens, and cash, and even some electronics.

You can find small travel wallets for single travellers, slightly bigger versions for couples, and whopping great A4-sized versions for large families and tour group leaders. They can be pocket-sized, or rucksack-sized, depending on your requirements. There are other things to think about, too.

Another aspect to consider is whether you want your travel wallet to provide protection against Radio-Frequency Identification devices (RFiD). Although rare, identification theft is an issue, and something you may or may not be worried out. Some of the best travel wallets block these devices, while others don’t, so it’s worth bearing it in mind when choosing. Ditto worldwide tracking, which adds even more peace of mind in case of theft.

When it comes to the best travel wallets, you get what you pay for. There’s nothing wrong with being cheap and cheerful, but if you want a wallet to become your faithful travel companion, you’re going to have to stretch that budget.

If you have a travel document holder, it's usefulness can spread beyond airports. Always take the same credit card when you travel? If you do have cards and documents that you only use when you travel – principally your passport, of course – a travel document holder is the ideal place to store them all when you are at home. Ditto emergency cash; no-one should go anywhere without at least US$50 in emergency cash (dollars are always better than pounds, especially when travelling outside Europe), and a travel document holder is the ideal place to keep it when you're at home as well as on your travels.

Travel + Leisure / David Hattan

Tap-to-pay technology adds convenience to shopping experiences , allowing you to make quick, contactless payments in a moment’s time. But unfortunately, it can also be an open invitation for high-tech thieves.

Enter RFID-blocking wallets, here to save your sensitive info from digital pickpockets. They create a digital force field, keeping your credit cards, passports, and whatever else safe from unauthorized snooping. The best RFID-blocking wallets act as a bodyguard for your digital identity, while also looking attractive and making it easy for you to grab any cash or documents you might need to reach for during your travels.

When researching the many products currently available, we prioritized several key features: digital safety, organization, appearance, practicality, and price. Taking these into consideration, we've compiled this list of the best RFID-blocking wallets to keep your identity safe while on the go.

Best Overall

Zero grid travel neck wallet with rfid blocking.

RFID-blocking sleeves, recovery tags, and super secure construction make this simple and affordable bag perfect for protecting your items on the go.

This bag is meant to be worn around the neck or as a crossbody, so it might not make the best choice for those looking for a traditional wallet.

Our top pick for an RFID-blocking wallet is a simple one, which favors function and durable materials to keep your valuable information safe during travel. Crafted from waterproof rip-stop nylon and YKK zippers, you don’t have to worry about potential fabric tears or loose pockets with this affordable neck wallet by Zero Grid. The wallet’s design is also sleek, making it easy to wear underneath a sweatshirt or jacket for added security.

If you decide to walk around for the day and don’t feel like bringing the entire bag with you, the RFID sleeves can also be removed for independent use — perfect for sticking in your pocket or within the compartments of another bag you’re using, like a backpack. Something else unique about this neck wallet is the inclusion of lost and found coverage, which would reimburse you up to $300 if your items are stolen.

Best Budget

Zoppen passport holder travel wallet.

Convenient and stylish, this wallet securely keeps everything you might need for your travels in its place, from your credit cards to your passport.

Larger than your average wallet, consider that you might want to stash this in a larger bag for everyday use, or utilize the included wrist strap.

This super affordable travel wallet is the definition of organized, with tons of helpful slots and pockets for all of your cards and documents — ensuring that your important items stay in their rightful place at the airport and beyond. There are compartments for multiple passports and folded notes and tickets, plus slots for your cards and ID. Your debit and credit cards are also kept safe by RFID blocking technology, and we love the additional compartments not seen from most travel wallets, such as a smartphone holder and even a pen holder. Lastly, it’s available in 15 different colors and comes with a convenient detachable wrist strap.

The Details: 7.75 x 12 inches | Faux leather | 8 card slots

Best Minimalist

The ridge minimalist slim wallet.

It’s durable yet incredibly sleek, with a profile so slim it can fit in most pants pockets.

It’s not large enough to carry a passport or other travel documents.

The makers of the Ridge wallet claim it’s made to last a lifetime, and we might actually believe them thanks to its durable aluminum construction and easily replaceable parts, like its elastic, screws, money clip, and cash strap plate. This slim and sleek wallet is meant to eliminate unnecessary items that can weigh your typical wallet down, like faded receipts and unused cards. It can fit up to 12 cards without stretching out, protecting each one with RFID-blocking technology, and includes an external money clip for securing your physical dollar bills. Keep in mind that you’ll need somewhere else to stash larger documents such as your passport or boarding passes.

The Details: 2.13 x 0.24 x 3.39 inches | Aluminum | 12 card slots

Best Luxury

Bosca leather bifold wallet.

This handcrafted wallet looks luxurious, while also keeping your cards safe from RFID hackers.

If you have a large collection of cards you’d like to carry around regularly, this might not be the right option.

RFID security meets handcrafted luxury in this leather wallet by Bosca, featuring safe card pockets and a clear ID window, two full-length bill pockets, and hidden pockets to keep other important documents secure and out of sight. Made from hand-stained leather in a small factory outside of Florence, Italy, it's also a great value considering the quality of materials and construction. This wallet has fewer card slots than others on this list, and therefore might not be right for you if capacity is your top consideration.

The Details: 3.5 x 4.5 x 0.5 inches | Italian leather | 5 card slots

Best Organization

Bellroy rfid travel wallet.

It has designated sections for your passport, tickets, bills, and up to 10 cards.

Larger in size and constructed without a strap, it might not be great for everyday use.

This folio by Bellroy combines functionality and style: it’s crafted from high-quality leather with a durable, minimalist design and tons of compartments for organizing your cards and documents. Dedicated compartments for passports, cards, and cash help keep everything organized and easily accessible, with RFID-blocking technology for safeguarding your identity. We love the unique design of this wallet’s built-in micro pen as well, which is perfect for filling out travel documents. Its slim and compact design ensures it won't add unnecessary bulk to your travel essentials, and it's available in four classic colors: tan, dark brown, black, and navy blue.

The Details: 8.07 x 4.13 inches | Leather | 14 card slots

Travel + Leisure / Taylor Fox

Best Money Clip

Hayvenhurst slim wallet.

It’s slim and high-quality with a convenient push-up feature for your cards.

This wallet’s rigid metal material might make it uncomfortable to store in your back pocket.

The compact and slim design of this wallet makes it ideal for travel, easily fitting into pockets without adding bulk, while the durable metal construction ensures longevity and protection for your valuables. The inclusion of a money clip adds a practical touch for organizing bills, allowing for quick access to cash when needed. We also love its sleek and stylish appearance — despite being able to hold up to 12 cards at one time, it can easily fit into your front pocket or small bag. To access cards, a small divot at the bottom of the wallet is designed for your finger to push them up.

The Details: 0.75 x 3.43 x 4.29 inches | Aluminum | 12 card slots

Best Crossbody

Pacsafe rfidsafe rfid blocking tech crossbody.

It’s sleek and convenient with great organization features.

The crossbody design may be less suitable for those who prefer traditional wallet styles.

Crafted from post-consumer recycled polyester (rPET), this crossbody wallet by PacSafe repurposes the equivalent of eight recycled plastic bottles. The bag's thoughtful construction not only incorporates RFID-blocking technology, but also several useful pockets and slots for your passport, credit cards, and more, including a pen loop and an internal attachment point for your keys. We love that it's less like a bag and more like a true wallet, with a crossbody design that makes it easy to access your important documents during your travels.

The Details: 8.66 x 4.92 x 1.38 inches | Recycled polyester | 5 card slots

Best Rugged

Pelican g5 personal utility rf field wallet.

It’s practically indestructible.

Its hard shell can make it difficult to pack in a small bag, and it doesn’t fit a passport.

Going somewhere off the beaten path, or simply want to make sure your cards and cash are safe from the elements? This field wallet by Pelican features an aircraft-grade aluminum RFID-blocking shell, and is both crush-proof and waterproof. Like all products by Pelican, it comes with a lifetime guarantee, so you’ll never have to worry about having to replace it on your own dime if something happens to it. Inside, find an elastomeric strap and mesh organizer for cards, cash, and keys plus a rear rubber strap on the exterior for quick-access items. Our main gripe is that it doesn’t have room for a passport, so you will need to find somewhere else to stash that during your travels, but it’s a great option for once you’ve made it through the airport and arrived at your final destination.

The Details: 5 x 3 x 0.80 inches | Aluminum | 4 card slots

Best Handsfree

Travelon anti-theft active waist pack.

It keeps your valuables secure to your body without giving up use of your hands.

Only the card and passport slots are RFID-blocking.

When you’re on the go, a good fanny pack is the perfect option that combines convenience, safety, and mobility. This one by Travelon takes the security of a waist pack and doubles it with RFID-blocking technology integrated into its inner card and passport slots, protecting you from theft in multiple ways. Made with lightweight durable nylon and slash-proof breathable mesh panels, it’s a no-brainer way to keep your cards and documents organized while running around an airport or a new city. Bear in mind that only the card and passport slots are RFID-blocking, though, so you shouldn’t let any of your cards sit loose in the main compartment if you want to take advantage of that feature.

The Details: 8.75 x 2 x 6 inches | Nylon | 3 card slots

Royce Vaccine Card and Passport Wallet

Despite having a dedicated slot for your passport, it isn’t bulky.

It isn’t the most spacious option on the list.

While many RFID-blocking wallets prioritize function over form, this one by Royce has both in spades. Crafted from high-quality leather and available in 11 attractive colors from bright cobalt blue to taupe, we love that this wallet can fit not only credit cards and your vaccination card, but also a passport, all without a bulky design. Besides offering a wide variety of colors to choose from, Royce also provides monogramming free of charge, letting you personalize your wallet for both safety and aesthetic appeal. Keep in mind if you have several credit cards you like to keep with you during your travels, this might not be the best option.

Best Compact

Pioneer passport wallet.

It’s designed specifically to keep your passport safe.

It’s slightly pricey for a small, non-leather wallet.

This compact wallet by Pioneer is perfect for the high volume traveler looking for something they can easily stick in their pocket while on the go. While most travel wallets seemingly include a passport strap or pocket as an afterthought, we love the thoughtful design of this one, which features a 3D molded passport slot. Waterproof and crafted from sturdy technical materials, Pioneer’s 10XD super fabric is ten times stronger than steel per weight, and is blended into a fine nylon ripstop. The wallet’s price is a bit hefty in our opinion considering it isn’t leather, but we love that it is pliable and engineered to break in with use and time, similar to leather.

Tips for Buying an RFID Wallet

Consider your storage needs.

When selecting an RFID-blocking wallet for travel, it's crucial to carefully consider your storage needs to ensure both functionality and security. Begin by assessing the number of cards and essential documents you plan to carry, such as credit cards, passports, and identification cards. Opt for a wallet with sufficient card slots and dedicated compartments for passports and travel documents. Alternatively, if you favor a more streamlined approach, a MagSafe wallet might be a good choice. Look for a design that allows easy access to frequently used cards while keeping sensitive items secure. Some RFID-blocking wallets also offer features like zippered pockets, pen slots, coin compartments, and billfold sections, providing versatility for organizing different currencies.

Opt for durable materials

Prioritizing long-lasting materials is also essential while picking out a wallet that you depend upon to safeguard your most sensitive items. Opt for wallets constructed from robust materials such as high-quality leather, nylon, or other RFID-blocking fabrics. These materials not only provide a sleek and stylish appearance but also offer resistance to wear and tear, ensuring the wallet can withstand the rigors of frequent travel. Additionally, look for wallets with reinforced stitching and secure closures to enhance durability.

RFID, or Radio-frequency Identification, is the technology that enables data to be transmitted wirelessly through embedded chips, allowing for the quick transaction time that we now love. While this technology makes checkout a breeze, it has also paved the way for a new breed of cybercrime known as RFID skimming. RFID-blocking technology protects your cards and passport against RFID skimming by employing materials that create a protective barrier.

RFID-blocking materials, like those integrated into specialized wallets, consist of a conductive layer that disrupts the radio signals, preventing them from reaching the RFID chips in your cards. This type of theft is rare and difficult to pull off since RFID technology is used to emit a one-time wireless signal only, and the signal becomes useless after each transaction. However, if you want to be extra protected, opt for a wallet with this technology inside.

Nope, RFID blockers cannot interfere with the functionality of your credit cards. Since RFID chips are passive, they require energy from a scanner to be active, and the technology in RFID-blocking wallets and other accessories simply keep your info from being tapped into.

It depends on what you're carrying with you. If you carry valuables that contain RFID technology, such as contactless credit cards and a smart passport, then an RFID-blocking wallet is highly recommended as a layer of added security. Also, if you're a frequent traveler and want to make sure your personal information is protected, then it’s a worthwhile investment to get a passport wallet with RFID-blocking technology built in.

The 10 Best Travel Wallets for Globetrotting

Best Travel Wallets 00 Hero

By: Tim Huber Published: Jun 21, 2023

When traveling , one of, if not the single most important item we carry, is our passport. These government-issued identification and travel documents are vital to international travel and are almost always required when crossing borders. This alone makes passports essential to keep secure and protected — and that’s before factoring in the rampant black market for passports that drives the theft of these items and results in literally millions of passports being stolen annually.

With mandates being lifted across the planet and international travel now opening back up for the first time in several years, it seems like the perfect time to revisit the world of travel and passport wallets. Below, we’ll not only be counting down our choices for the best travel and passport wallets currently on the market, but we’ll also be delving into the main factors to consider when shopping for one.

The Seven Main Factors To Consider When Buying A Travel Wallet

Though travel and passport wallets are admittedly fairly straightforward items, there are a surprising number of minor details one should be privy to before making their purchase. Below, we’ve outlined seven of the most crucial areas to consider when shopping for a passport wallet.

Materials: Arguably the most important factor to consider when purchasing a travel wallet is the material — or materials — used to create it. This element will not only play a substantial role in the look and feel of a given travel wallet but will also determine its durability and much of its overall quality. Not unlike regular wallets, passport wallets now come in a slew of different materials, from more traditional constructions to cutting-edge fabrics and textiles.

Construction Technique(s): Just as important as the materials being utilized is how those materials are pieced together — also known as a construction technique. Today’s travel wallets feature a variety of construction techniques, from traditional stitching to laser-welds.

Closure: Most travel wallets on the market open up to reveal a passport and other vital travel essentials. As such, the majority of these items feature some type of closure system to hold them shut when not being used. This includes everything from zippers to snap buttons to embedded magnets.

Amenities & Organization: Though a travel wallet’s main job is typically to protect your passport, plenty of models on the market also boast additional travel-focused features and amenities. This includes pockets and organizers for stashing things like credit cards , boarding passes, and other tickets, as well as pen loops, key leashes, and holders for Airtags and tracking devices. And, not unlike regular EDC wallets, a great many of the travel-specific wallets currently being sold also feature RFID protection.

Size: Because most travel wallets are built to accommodate a passport, they unsurprisingly tend to sport a rectangular, semi-passport-shaped profile. With that said, there are travel wallets that offer storage and organization for other essentials for globetrotting — like key cards, boarding passes, SD cards, licenses, and other documents. What’s more, there are also family and group-oriented travel wallets that include slots for housing multiple passports. The size of a travel wallet also determines other important factors such as whether it can easily be slipped in a pant pocket or quick-access compartment of a travel pack.

Style: Just like with regular everyday use wallets, travel-specific models are produced in all manner of different shapes and styles. While we subscribe to the belief that factors like materials and amenities should serve as the main guiding forces in your search, there’s still nothing wrong with factoring your personal aesthetic taste into the equation when shopping around for a passport or travel wallet.

Price: Travel and passport wallets are offered across a wide range of prices. Because these items aren’t absolutely essential, it can sometimes feel difficult to justify the purchase of one of the more premium items on the market. The reality, however, is that you tend to get what you pay for in this segment, with the higher-priced passport wallets typically boasting markedly better quality — along with the ability to last a lifetime. A travel wallet can also save you money in the long run, as it can protect passports and other vital items that would be exorbitant to replace if lost or damaged.

Selection & Testing Process

How & Why We Got Hands-On With These Particular Travel Wallets

Best Travel Wallets Tested 02 1

Walking a fine line between passport covers and regular EDC bifolds and cardholders, travel wallets are a fairly unique product space that’s designed for a very specific purpose. While losing your wallet will always be problematic, this dilemma is exponentially worse when it occurs overseas. Travel wallets aim to mitigate this unfortunate possible circumstance by providing a secure means of carrying, organizing, and transporting your passport, money, tickets, boarding passes, and other vital documents. Due to their intended use, the most important factors to consider are undoubtedly size, organizational amenities, and the materials and construction technique(s) used to craft each model — elements that we used to guide our search when compiling a list of the best travel wallets on the market.

While a product’s materials, list of features, and general spec sheet do all provide helpful insight into the quality of each travel wallet, the only way to really determine the overall performance and utility of each model is to use it — which is exactly what we’ve done. After using the aforementioned criteria to formulate our list of picks, we then set about putting each and every travel wallet to the test, utilizing one or more of the models on our list while taking both short weekend excursions and extended overseas trips. This firsthand experience also provided insight into each travel wallets build quality and fit and finish, as well as each’s versatility, with some models boasting the ability to accommodate a smartphone , EDC gear, or other items that increase potential utility, usability, and value.

11 Things to Take Out of Your Wallet Before Traveling

Posted: June 21, 2024 | Last updated: June 21, 2024

<p>In a world where every dollar counts, especially for the 40 million Americans scraping by below the poverty line, knowing where your money goes is more than smart—it’s essential. </p> <p>Yet, many striving to save find themselves stuck in a costly loop of spending on things that don’t really add up to financial stability. Think high-cost loans or pricey convenience foods. </p> <p>We’re about to share the money traps that silently drain wallets, often without notice. Ready to turn things around?</p>

Losing your smartphone while traveling can be a nightmare, putting sensitive personal and financial data at risk. According to a report by Prey Project, around 70 million smartphones are lost each year, with only 7% recovered. 1

To avoid potential identity theft, financial loss, and endless hassles from a lost or stolen smartphone, it’s crucial to take proper security precautions.

Here are 11 items you should leave at home to minimize the impact of a lost or stolen wallet.

travel wallet an

1. Social Security Card

Carrying your Social Security card is an open invitation for identity theft. A skilled thief needs only your Social Security number to open credit cards or take out loans in your name. Memorize the number instead, and leave the physical card securely locked at home.

<p>Your birth certificate is another document that should remain safely tucked away in a fire-proof box at home. Only take it out when you need it for official paperwork that requires multiple forms of identification.</p>

2. Birth Certificate

<p>Keeping a list of usernames and passwords in your wallet is a recipe for disaster. If your wallet is lost or stolen, potential thieves gain access to your accounts. Consider using a password manager instead.</p>

These aren’t your typical “skip the latte” suggestions.</p> <p>Instead, they’re practical, easy-to-implement strategies that most people don’t realize can save them significant money over time.</p>

4. Excess Cash

While it’s wise to carry some cash for emergencies, carrying too much can be a liability. Follow the rule: “Only carry as much cash as you’re willing to lose.” Revealing an excess of cash in your wallet can make you a prime target for pickpockets and thieves.

<p>With storefronts shuttered and consumers wary of leaving home, online shopping saw a massive surge during the pandemic. E-commerce sales jumped by over 30% in 2020 as even reluctant digital shoppers came to rely on the convenience of home delivery. (<a href="https://www.census.gov/library/stories/2022/04/ecommerce-sales-surged-during-pandemic.html">ref</a>)</p> <p>Retailers have taken note, pouring money into improving their online platforms and streamlining logistics. Curbside pickup is now a common sight, and same-day delivery has become table stakes. While some predicted a return to physical stores post-pandemic, it’s clear that e-commerce is now central to the retail landscape.</p>

5. Unprotected Phone

Our phones have become our lifelines, storing sensitive information like bank account details and passwords. Ensure your phone is secured with a lock code or biometric authentication to prevent unauthorized access if it’s lost or stolen.

<p>High credit card interest rates can make it feel like you’re running on a financial treadmill. A simple phone call to your credit card issuer can often result in a reduced APR, especially if you have a strong payment history.</p>

6. Multiple Credit Cards

Carrying multiple credit cards increases the risk of identity theft if your wallet is lost or stolen. Stick to one rewards credit card for everyday purchases and a backup card for emergencies.

<p>Identity documents, such as your passport or driver’s license, are key to verifying your identity. Sharing these documents or their numbers can lead to identity theft and fraud.</p> <p>Only provide copies or details for official and verified purposes.</p>

7. Passport

While it’s hard to avoid needing your passport while traveling abroad, leave it in a hotel safe when you don’t need it. Make photocopies of your passport and carry those instead.

<p>Checks contain a wealth of information, including your account number, routing number, and address. If possible, avoid carrying your checkbook altogether. If you must, carry only one check filled out with as much information as possible.</p>

8. Checkbook

Checks contain a wealth of information, including your account number, routing number, and address. If possible, avoid carrying your checkbook altogether. If you must, carry only one check filled out with as much information as possible.

<p>Unlike credit cards, debit cards provide direct access to your bank account. If stolen, a thief can drain your account, and banks may not cover the loss. Consider using a credit card for travel expenses instead.</p>

9. Debit Card

Unlike credit cards, debit cards provide direct access to your bank account. If stolen, a thief can drain your account, and banks may not cover the loss. Consider using a credit card for travel expenses instead.

<p>You may belong to a country club, social club, or other exclusive organization. These memberships provide opportunities for networking, socializing, and pursuing hobbies in a luxurious setting.</p>

10. Membership Cards

While traveling, it’s unlikely you’ll need proof of organizational memberships. An exception would be a travel organization card that provides discounts or lounge access.

Watching Your Wallet: Finding the perfect summer travel spot

HARTFORD, Conn. (WFSB) - With school out, it’s officially the thick of the summer travel season, and the travel content on social media can be both beautiful and overwhelming.

“Besides what we see on Instagram, besides what we see in flashy magazines, like thinking about what do we like to enjoy when we travel and optimize those areas,” said Danielle Desir Corbett.

Danielle Desir Corbett is a Connecticut mom who runs both “The Thought Card” blog and podcast. ( https://thoughtcard.com/ ) Desir Corbett has traveled to 27 countries while paying off $63,000 in student loan debt. She now helps people get the luxury-travel feel while staying within budget. She says it all starts with treating travel like a rent payment or other bill.

“Travel is a line-item in my budget. It is something that I save for every single month. It has its own bank account that’s dedicated towards travel, and I really like to save money that I won’t miss,” said Desir Corbett.

She also suggests considering destinations that are only a short drive away from the more popular ones.

“Looking outside of those big cities, like Charleston, amazing. If you drive an hour and a half you get to Columbia, an amazing destination where prices are a little bit lower,” said Desir Corbett.

She also suggests cities like

Compare the Best Cheap Travel Insurance

The best travel insurance meets your needs at a price you're willing to pay. Sometimes, you're just not willing to pay that much. The following companies offer decent coverage for low prices. To determine which companies made this list, we compared quotes across the travel insurance industry for the same trip, making a note of which companies offered particularly good coverage in certain areas and which companies were well reviewed.

Here are the best affordable travel insurance companies picked by Business Insider editors in 2024.

Best Affordable Travel Insurance Overall

Hth worldwide.

The HTH Worldwide Travel Insurance Economy plan offers the most comprehensive coverage across major categories of all the providers in this guide.

You'll have some peace of mind with up to $75,000 of financial protection for eligible medical emergencies, and up to $500,000 per person for medical evacuation costs. For more everyday expenses, you can also relax with baggage loss and delay, trip interruption, cancellation and delay coverage that will help you recoup many, if not all, of your costs.

However, this plan falls short on missed connection benefits and accidental death coverage, both of which are not available under most circumstances (missed connection coverage only applies to cruises, and will only cover up to $500 per person after a three-hour delay).

Best Affordable Travel Insurance for Trip Cancellation

Aegis general travel insurance.

The Aegis General Travel Insurance Trip Cancellation Plan is exactly that: a cost-effective plan that offers protection in the event that your trip is canceled for a covered reason. The plan we priced out for our hypothetical trip cost just 1.16% of our total travel expenses — a very small amount of money to pay for the guarantee of our money back in the right circumstances.

The benefit is that this plan can supplement other coverage you already have, or give you a little bit of protection for a trip where you might not otherwise have opted for insurance altogether. On the downside, you won't get any protection for medical emergencies, trip interruption or delays or lost bags from this plan.

Best Affordable Travel Insurance for Medical Coverage

Geoblue travel insurance.

GeoBlue Travel Insurance is a travel insurance provider that specializes in travel medical insurance. Because it doesn't offer much trip protection or travel inconvenience coverage, it can charge cheaper premiums. A 30-year-old from California would pay as low as $20.55 for a policy that covers a two-week trip.

GeoBlue plans can cover medical expenses up to $1 million with several multi-trip annual plans available. It offers coinsurance plans for trips within the U.S. and 100% coverage for international trips. It also has a network of clinics in 180 countries, streamlining the claims process. It's worth noting that coverage for pre-existing conditions comes with additional costs.

This plan offers solid protection for both travel-related snafus as well as situations that might call for emergency medical and evacuation, making it a good choice for trips where you have cause to worry about potential interruptions or delays. However, it does not offer protection for missed connections or accidental death.

Best Affordable Travel Insurance for Reputation

Trawick travel insurance.

The Trawick International Travel Insurance Safe Travels Explorer plan has been purchased by more than 36,000 travelers since 2020, and it has great reviews to boot. And no wonder: Trawick offers generous trip delay coverage of up to $2,000 per person, although hopefully you won't need to reach that reimbursement amount because the daily limit is $150.

You'll also be able to rely on a $200 reimbursement per person for lost baggage - one of the higher amounts amongst these affordable plans, although this amount pales in comparison to the baggage loss coverage offered through the best travel credit cards .

Types of Affordable Travel Insurance

Comprehensive coverage.

This type of insurance offers extensive protection, covering everything from medical issues to trip cancellations. While it's more expensive up front, it can save you a lot in the long run.

Medical-Only Coverage

As the name suggests, this policy focuses solely on medical emergencies, dropping trip cancellation coverage and travel inconvenience coverage. It's a cost-effective option for travelers who are primarily concerned about health-related expenses.

Evacuation and Repatriation

In extreme cases where you need to be evacuated due to a medical emergency or a natural disaster, this coverage ensures that you can return home safely without incurring huge costs.

Benefits of Opting for Cheap Travel Insurance

Cost savings.

Cheap travel insurance can significantly reduce your travel expenses, ensuring that you're not overpaying for coverage you might not need.

Adequate Coverage for Less

Just because it's cheap doesn't mean it's lacking. Many affordable policies offer substantial coverage, giving you peace of mind without breaking the bank.

How to Pick The Best Cheap Travel Insurance Plan for You

No single travel insurance plan will meet the needs of every single traveler. By nature, we are diverse and evolving meaning travel insurance should be equally so. Travel insurance for a week-long trip to a big city shouldn't be the same as the coverage for a backpacking expedition in the mountains. A splurge to purchase comprehensive insurance coverage may also be worth it for international ventures or other large expenditures.

In most cases, the cost difference between a basic and comprehensive travel insurance plan isn't as significant as you might think. Regardless, it's generally a good idea to choose a trusted travel insurance provider known for exceptional customer service and coverage. (For this roundup, we looked at traveler reviews shared through the travel insurance aggregator SquareMouth .)

  • Assessing Your Travel Needs: Consider the nature of your trip, the destination, and your own personal needs when choosing a policy. This ensures that you're not over-insured or underinsured.
  • Comparing Different Policies: Don't settle for the first policy you find. Compare different options, looking at their coverage and prices, to find the best fit for your budget and needs.
  • Reading the Fine Print: Always read the terms and conditions carefully to understand what's covered, what's not, and the process for making a claim.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Reviewed Cheap Travel Insurance

To determine the best insurance plan for travelers on a budget, we evaluated dozens of products using a hypothetical trip to Australia for a single traveler, age 26, with a total cost of $2,500 for flight, hotel and other incidentals. We then compiled the plans that covered the essentials at the lowest costs.

Of note: All of these plans include COVID-related medical coverage and 24-hour assistance, and pay at least 100% of your trip cost for eligible trip cancellations. None include rental car coverage.

The four winning plans cost between $29 to $74 — significantly below the average cost of comprehensive travel insurance , which can range between 4%-8% of total travel expenses, according to the US Travel Insurance Association. But these affordable plans also come with comparably low ceilings for various aspects of coverage such as emergency medical, trip cancellation, or delay — and do not include rental car or " cancel for any reason" (CFAR) protection . So if you think you might need these benefits, it may well be worth upgrading to a comprehensive travel insurance plan for a few more dollars, just for the peace of mind.

Convenience and Flexibility

Each of the plans in this list include 24-hour assistance worldwide from reputable insurance providers. And despite being on the lower end of insurance plans, each of these options includes refunds for up to 100% of your total trip cost for eligible reasons. Each of these plans also includes medical coverage for COVID-related issues that may arise during your travels, which may come in handy as the pandemic continues to evolve worldwide.

Sufficient Coverage in Essential Categories

The cheapest travel insurance plan will rarely cover every scenario that could go awry on your trip. However, each of these plans can at least help you get your money back in the event that your travel is canceled for an eligible reason, and most of them include travel medical insurance if you incur emergency medical bills while traveling. We also factor in what travelers are most concerned about now.

Best Cheap Travel Insurance FAQs

You can reduce the cost of travel insurance by opting for simpler coverage or choosing higher deductibles on travel medical insurance. You can also consider annual travel insurance , which will save you money in the long run if you take multiple trips over one year.

Yes, many affordable policies offer comprehensive coverage suitable for international travel. It's crucial to compare policies and understand your needs. You can find our guide on the best international travel insurance here.

Travel insurance is relatively cheap because it only covers you for a set period of time, and depending on your plan, the level of coverage you get may not be particularly high. However, even with high coverage limits and extras like cancel for any reason coverage , travel insurance is relatively affordable.

The average cost of travel insurance is 4%-8% of your trip's cost. This usually translates into a premium between $89 to $399. That said, many companies offer premiums far below average costs.

If you just want trip cancellation protection, go with the Aegis Trip Cancellation plan. For more robust coverage that won't break the bank, consider HTH Worldwide's TripProtector Economy, Trawick's Safe Travels Explorer, or Nationwide's Essentials plan.

For travelers seeking a thrifty transatlantic trip, Norse Atlantic Airways operates several budget flights between select European and U.S. airports. Here’s everything you need to know about this low-cost airline.

Norse Atlantic Airways is a Norwegian low-cost long-haul carrier headquartered in Arendal, Norway. It was founded in 2021 with its first flight taking off from Oslo, Norway’s capital, in 2022.

The Norse Atlantic fleet includes 15 Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

According to the Norse Atlantic website, more routes are coming in the future.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft from the Norse airline are equipped with two cabins: economy and premium. Seats are arranged in a 3-3-3 configuration in economy class and 2-3-2 in the premium cabin.

Every seat in both cabins offers a seatback TV, USB charger and power outlet.

Premium class sweetens the deal by offering passengers a dedicated cabin, complimentary in-flight meals, a wider seat and 43 inches of pitch, blankets, pillows, ear plugs, and an eye mask.

Seat "pitch" is the distance from any point of a seat to the same point of a seat behind it in the same cabin.

The two service cabins are then subdivided into the multiple fare bundles — a common pricing model among low-cost airlines.

Each cabin offers fares at Light, Classic and Flextra levels. Light fares charge the most to change or cancel ($200) and do not include even a carry-on. Flextra fares, meanwhile, offer free changes or cancellations and include carry-on and checked baggage, a meal, seat selection and priority boarding.

Economy Light, Classic and Flextra

Economy cabin tickets are divided into three fares: Economy Light, Economy Classic and Economy Flextra. You’ll customize your flight experience by selecting one of these options during the booking process. Here’s what each fare includes.

One personal item not exceeding 15.5 x 11.5 x 5.5 inches (40 x 30 x 15 centimeters).

Changeable for $200 plus fare difference, if any.

Last boarding group.

One carry-on bag not exceeding 22 x 18 x 10 inches (56 x 45 x 25 centimeters) and up to 22 pounds (10 kilograms).

One checked bag not exceeding 50 pounds (23 kilograms).

One meal service with one nonalcoholic beverage (on flights longer than six hours).

General boarding.

Changeable for $125 plus fare difference, if any.

Seat selection.

Priority boarding.

Free changes and cancellations (for a travel credit).

Premium Light, Classic and Flextra

Premium cabin tickets on Norse are also divided into three fare classes: Premium Light, Premium Classic and Premium Flextra. Below is what is included with each fare class.

Two meal services (on flights longer than six hours) and complimentary beverages.

Premium boarding.

Priority check-in.

One carry-on bag not exceeding 22 x 18 x 10 inches (56 x 45 x 25 centimeters) and up to 22 pounds (10 kilograms.).

Because Norse Atlantic operates a rather small fleet, its route network is limited. However, the Norwegian carrier partners with several other low-cost airlines across the globe via a service that helps customers book self-connected flights, known as the Dohop connection service.

Norse Atlantic partners with the following carriers:

Aegean Airlines.

Pegasus Airlines.

Spirit Airlines .

VietJet Air.

If you book a connecting flight operated with a Dohop connection on any airline above, your flight will be booked on one ticket, but multiple airlines will operate the segments.

In the example below for a trip from London-Gatwick to Austin, Texas, the two flight segments are flown by Norse Atlantic and Spirit Airlines, respectively.

travel wallet an

Despite one ticket, you are still flying on multiple airlines when you book via a Dohop connection. As such, you need to have visa clearance to enter any country you transfer through, and your checked baggage will have to be collected and rechecked during your transfer.

To the good, if your flight is delayed or canceled and you miss your connection, Dohop will rebook you on another flight at no extra cost to you.

Norse Atlantic describes itself as a low-cost airline, but are the prices really as low as advertised? Let’s take a look at a few scenarios.

Cost of a bare-bones ticket

We began our search on the Norse website. Right off the bat, we noticed that a sale was happening, and it was possible to fly to Europe and back for as low as $362. However, it quickly became apparent that the sale price applied to select routes and dates only.

travel wallet an

For example, the itinerary that’s priced out at $362 is for a departure in March and a return in May. Most leisure travelers can’t travel for that long and therefore opt for shorter trips.

travel wallet an

Let’s say you want to travel from Miami, Florida, to Oslo, Norway, in the summer and for a shorter time period. Norse gives you the option to view airfare prices by list view or calendar view. The calendar view allows you to see a month at a time, which is useful when your dates are flexible.

travel wallet an

The prices that you see upfront are Economy Light and Premium Light fares, meaning if you want to book a higher fare class like Classic or Flextra, it’ll cost you more than what you see initially.

Based on this calendar, we’ve found a round-trip Economy Light fare between Miami, Florida, and Oslo, Norway, for $475. This ticket type includes just a personal item that fits under the seat in front of you and puts you in the last boarding group.

travel wallet an

You'll probably need to pay out-of-pocket to add on a carry-on bag at minimum, depending on your travel style.

» Learn more: Should you fly on international budget airlines?

Cost of a ticket after the add-ons

If you’d rather get all the comforts of a full-service airline, you can spice up your ticket with extras, like a carry-on or checked bag, seat selection and maybe even a meal. Let’s take a look at how these options would affect your final ticket price.

If you want to bring a small carry-on suitcase or check a larger bag, you don’t necessarily have to purchase a higher fare class. You can select an Economy Light fare and add a bag during the booking process.

For example, on the Miami-Oslo route, additional baggage exceeding a personal item will cost the following:

$45 for a small carry-on bag (22 pounds or less).

$60 for a light checked bag (33 pounds or less).

$75 for a standard checked bag (34 to 49 pounds).

$170 for a heavy checked bag (50 to 70 pounds).

The listed price is per direction, meaning you’d have to pay double for a round-trip journey.

Let’s be reasonable here and say you want to add a carry-on suitcase or backpack weighing no more than 22 pounds (10 kilograms) to your trip. This increases your total airfare cost by $90.

Picking a seat is going to cost you another $25 to $120, depending on where in the plane you pick. You also can skip seat selection if it’s not important and you can live with a random seat assigned to you.

Meals cost extra as well if you select an Economy Light fare — prepare to pay $20 to $30 for each one.

You’re then asked whether you want to pay $20 for a priority airport check-in and another $15 for priority boarding. Then you’re offered a fast-track option to get through security for $12 and access to an airport lounge in Oslo, Norway, for $38.

Let’s say you’ve chosen an Economy Light fare and added the following to it:

$90 for a carry-on bag on both the departure and return flights.

$70 for an aisle seat in both directions.

$100 for two vegetarian meals in each direction (four meals total).

Your custom airfare between Miami, Florida, and Oslo, Norway, is now $735.

How its cost compares to a full-service airline

Now, let’s compare it to a similar itinerary on a full-service airline.

At the time of writing, we’ve found a trip operated by a mix of Oneworld alliance partners for about $1,100 — but it has lengthy layovers in both directions.

travel wallet an

Given that Norse Atlantic is the only carrier that provides nonstop service on this particular route, and it is less expensive — even with all the add-ons — it ends up being the best option for saving both time and money.

» Learn more: When to fly on low-cost carriers vs. full-service airlines

Cost of a custom ticket vs. a bundle

Is a fare bundle more economical than a ticket with a la carte add ons?

For example, let’s say you’re considering the Economy Classic bundle instead of the no-frills Economy Light experience. This bundle includes a personal item, a carry-on bag, a checked bag and one meal service. Norse is selling this bundle for $655 on the aforementioned Miami-Oslo route.

In this case, the same perks would cost the following when added a la carte to an Economy Light fare:

$150 for a standard checked bag in both directions.

$60 for two meals (one in each direction).

If you were to book an Economy Light fare for $475 and add on the items above, the round-trip ticket would cost $775. So in this case, purchasing a bundled fare saves you $120.

Crunch the numbers before booking your airfare, especially when you’re dealing with low-cost airlines that charge a la carte for services.

Generally speaking, yes. Norse Atlantic Airways reviews are mostly good, praising the carrier’s use of Boeing 787 planes, its cabin crew and seat comfort. However, it’s important to manage expectations properly and be mindful of luggage restrictions and ancillary fees.

Make sure to compare bundle prices with a la carte add-ons before purchasing, and compare costs with full-service carriers to ensure you get the best possible price for what you receive.

Dreaming of going to the College World Series? You need to move fast and have a thick wallet

travel wallet an

Could this be the great, historic year that Tennessee finally wins the College World Series?

The team finished as the runner-up in 1951, the closest it has come to winning. In total, the Vols have made it to Omaha five times.

If there's even a chance they make it happen, you have to be there. But how exactly are you going to make it work? And how much money will it cost you to have a seat at that sweet, sweet game?

We hope you're a fast reader, because you need to finalize your itinerary ASAP to make Game 1.

Get your hands on College World Series tickets

First thing's first. Let's make sure you've got a seat at the sporting event of your dreams.

The best-of-3 series will occur over two or three days, depending if Game 3 is required. Omaha is in the Central time zone, but we're listing them here in Eastern (we don't want to mess with anyone relying on us at home for first pitch times).

  • Game 1:  Saturday, June 22, 7:30 p.m. EDT
  • Game 2:  Sunday, June 23, 2 p.m. EDT
  • Game 3 (if necessary):  Monday, June 24, 7 p.m. EDT

Fans looking to attend one of the games will need to be ready to shell out some big bucks for a ticket (and those prices are sure to rise if the series is extended). Prices for Game 1 already are starting at more than $300 per seat.

Game 1 (From $332):  https://stubhub.prf.hn/l/0e9O0jY

Game 2 (From $181):  https://stubhub.prf.hn/l/QLawqxE

Game 3 (From $22):  https://stubhub.prf.hn/l/mVkv2q1

Get in the car .... like, now

Driving is possible. Waze says Vols fans can arrive at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha in 13 hours with no stops (ha, good luck with that). It's more than 900 miles through Nashville, St. Louis and Kansas City.

As of June 20, there's a flood warning in effect until early Saturday afternoon along the route in Buchanan, Missouri, according to Google Maps, so drivers will also need to keep alternative routes in mind, extending an already lengthy journey.

Gas will cost about $219 round trip, according to AAA's website.

Or, grab that credit card and book your flight

You'd be cutting it close by leaving Saturday morning, so dedicated baseball fans will need to fly out to Omaha early Friday. In case Game 3 happens, we're accounting for a Tuesday return flight too.

Knoxpedia: Your guide to flying into and out of Knoxville at McGhee Tyson

That brings round-trip ticket prices for flights from Knoxville to Omaha to a total to $2,545 through United or $3,102 through Delta, according to Google Flights.

The good news is Delta offers two free checked bags, so at least all that Vols merch flies free.

Getting to Omaha under budget

Spent all your money on game tickets? We hope you're packed because you'll need to hop on a Greyhound Bus stat.

Each bus is almost full. But if you're lucky, you can find a seat leaving Knoxville late Thursday night and arriving in Omaha late Friday night. Prices are between $203.55 and $246.94, according to the Greyhound website.

What about lodging?

Obviously, you'll want to stay close to Charles Schwab Field. And while you're at it, go ahead and book the Hilton Omaha for a ballpark view so you don't miss a thing.

It'll run you about $8,600 for your Friday through Tuesday stay. Several other hotels in the area have already sold out of rooms, so hopefully price isn't an object.

Grand slam? What about the grand total?

If you're flying, you can count on spending $12,237 on your big trip to Omaha − and that's not even counting the three days worth of stadium dogs. If your wallet's big enough − or if you're a true VFL − well, bon voyage.

And if you're trying to do it on a budget by driving instead of flying? Good call – that'll cost you only $9,354.
