As summer nears, a reminder to NH tourists: 'There's more than two or three places to hike or visit'

View south of Franconia Notch, from Cannon Mountain.

Summer — New Hampshire’s biggest tourist season — is officially underway with Memorial Day. And state officials are expecting a slight increase in the number of tourists over last year, anticipating 4.3 million visitors through the summer.

Taylor Caswell, commissioner of the Department of Business and Economic Affairs, said he’s projecting about a 5% increase in visitors and a 6.5% increase in spending compared to 2022, when summer spending peaked .

In particular, he said the state expects a jump in international travelers, as pandemic restrictions fade from view.

But a persistent challenge, Caswell said, is dealing with the popularity of certain destinations, like Franconia Notch or the Mount Washington Valley.

“One of the things that we continue to work on is dispersion,” he said, “and sort of demonstrating to people that there's more than just two or three places to hike or to visit in New Hampshire.”

Caswell said his office has been working with regional organizations to help them promote a wider range of destinations to new visitors. In the future, he’s also hoping technological solutions could help — like a system that could show when trailhead parking lots are full and direct people to other places nearby.

As climate change lengthens the warm season in New Hampshire, Caswell said the month of September is increasingly an extension of summer. And as the season for winter activities like skiing shrinks as a result of climate change, warm-weather tourism holds additional significance for some businesses.

“A lot of our outdoor recreation operators, including ski areas and others, are looking for ways to adapt to climate change and offering, like, mountain biking or fat biking or ziplining, other things they can do with their properties to generate income,” he said.

Caswell said the state is also working to educate visitors on how to spend time outdoors safely, including increasing awareness around heat exposure.

Nh tourism officials projecting 4.3 million travelers to visit this summer, spending expected to reach $2.35 billion.

Published on

The Department of Business and Economic Affairs, Division of Travel and Tourism (DTTD) is anticipating an estimated 4.3 million people will visit New Hampshire this summer with spending by those visitors expected to reach $2.35 billion.

The numbers represent a 4.8% increase in visitation and a 6.5% increase in spending. DTTD unveiled its summer marketing campaign, along with a forecast for visitation, during the NH Tourism Summit at the Bank of New Hampshire Stage in Concord.

“We have seen record spending in New Hampshire the last two summers, despite having to deal with the COVID pandemic,” said BEA Commissioner Taylor Caswell. “While inflation and the potential for a recession continue to pose threats, data shows there continues to be a pent-up demand for travel, and we expect to experience higher levels of visitation this summer resulting in even stronger levels of spending.”

New Hampshire’s summer campaign platform will continue to be “Discover Your New, ” as well as deploying road trip messaging. The state will continue to market in its core markets of New England and New York; road trip markets of Eastern PA and New Jersey; and Montreal and Quebec City in Canada. The campaign launched in the road trip and Canadian markets in mid-March and in the core markets on May 1.

“With record visitation anticipated again this summer, one of the elements we’re focusing on is the visitor experience,” said NH Travel and Tourism Director Lori Harnois. “We believe we should all be working together regarding recreating responsibly. We encourage visitors and residents to become familiar with New Hampshire’s Leave No Trace initiative and help preserve the state’s natural resources for future generations.”

The New Hampshire Department of Travel and Tourism is predicting that tourists will visit the Granite State this winter in numbers greater than before the pandemic.

Tourism officials are expecting a good winter based on a number of factors and are launching a campaign to convince people to come.

"We target visitors throughout New England as well as into eastern Canada to come to New Hampshire to have fun here," Lori Harnois, director of the New Hampshire Department of Travel and Tourism, said.

When it comes to tourism in the state, winter is the third-most important season, behind summer, which is the busiest, and fall.

The department is forecasting that about 3 million visitors will come to New Hampshire this winter, and they'll spend about $1.5 billion.

Adding to the optimism, at Nault's Powersports, owners recently received a fresh delivery of snowmobiles, and they said the supply chain problems are receding.

While the ski areas are still what most people associate with winter sports, the department is also looking to target other outdoor enthusiasts.

“Like backcountry skiing and skinning to fat biking down our mountains," Harnois said.

At S&W Sports, there are plenty of fat bikes available, and if the snow doesn't fall, it really doesn't matter.

"Now, if you've got rocks poking through some snow, maybe you don't have good coverage. A fat bike doesn't care. It'll hit the rocks. It will hit the snow and just keep going," Dan Mutz, of S&W Sports, said.

The recent snowfall on Sunday and Monday was just what some were officials and businesses were looking for.

"We've got ski areas that are open. We've got people visiting. It's perfect for the holidays, so it's great," Michelle Cruz, executive director of the Mount Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce, said.

Cruz said it was a hard winter last year, but they're hoping that this early snowfall is a sign that this year will be different.
