LA Girl in the Know and on the Go!

QueensLander Tours’ Founder is truly A Man for All Seasons: Mark Story Goes Global in His Search for Unique Destinations! Guest Post!

Writer Brenda McClain came to me with this great idea about travel company that had more than just expensive travel on the mind– it was about finding great destinations where the you get immersed in the local culture.

Here is her story on Mark Story , a “man for all seasons” but truly this is a man on both sides of the equator whose passion is to take you more than just where it’s warm, but where the culture of the destination is warm at heart. Think Sir Thomas Moore with a bit of Da Vinci in the mix because he is always willing to try new things and go new places!

markstorybw

Mark loves to quote Gustave Flaubert, who says “Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.”
It’s this last statement that brings to mind a 21st century Renaissance man– Mark Story. This is not to say that Story is an aristocrat, although many who travel with him might think differently. However his career arc is pretty interesting and because he’s always on the run- traveling or on stage– he’s definitely a different version of a “man for all season”. His successful travel company, QueensLander Tours , is busier than ever, much due to their successful business model. He is husband, father, friend, and in his spare time loves to work out and regularly performs in local film productions.

Mark Story earned his degree in Television Broadcasting/Media Communication at Harding University and received his Master of Science in Education with an emphasis in Communication. His background includes training at the Denver Academy of the Arts and experience in broadcast and sports journalism. He has appeared in many theatrical productions and commercials, including Starz©, DISH© Network, and The Travel Channel©. He has also appeared in many short films, including Paintbrushes Don’t Have Erasers and Average Joe . Story’s travel experiences can be found by following him at www.MarkStoryWorldAdventures.com .

story-in-front-of-story-bld

Mark’s experience in travel began in college with mission trips to the land “down under,” Australia. He fell in love with the people of Australia, as well as its varied landscape and culture. After returning to university, he acquired his Master’s degree and was appointed as Graduate Assistant to the College of Communication. It was during this time Mark decided to expand his role in travel and began taking groups of travelers to Australia and New Zealand. After a few years of juggling international tours and less interesting jobs, Mark made his passion his career and stepped full-time into the tour industry, where he met and fell in love with Italy. Of course that college trip to Australia is where it all began, but his new love – Italy – pulls at his heartstrings now, and mostly when he’s in Florence. Ask him why and Mark is quick to say “Have you seen Michelangelo’s David? Or, that Florence holds the most important collection of Renaissance Art where his tour guests can regularly see not only the Michelangelo, but Giotto, Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Perugino, and Raphael. But it’s still the coffee that has him talking ‘non stop ‘ to most, in fact he’s even made a video, which can be seen at http://www.markstoryworldadventures.com/ . He can talk for days about Italian coffee and its uniqueness as a beverage and an experience!

The Italian nation has wooed Mark’s heart for several years now. He continues to enjoy “unwrapping” Italy for his guests. Mark is the owner and Executive Director of QueensLander Tours, and yes, the name was inspired by his travels to the Australian continent.

Anyone still in the travel biz has to do very personalized products. His look great.

My wife and I went to Philadelphia and Washington DC with Mark and Queenslanders Tours this spring. This was a truly enjoyable experience and would recommend Queenslanders for an excellent travel experience.

so great to hear. His enthusiasm and knowledge make it sound fabulous!

Travel for me is ALL about exploring the local culture. I’ve actually come to realise through writing London-Unattached that is what works for me. I’m glad I’m not alone

Editoral Review of STORY Land & Sea (Ceased Operations)

Story Land & Sea® is a travel company known for true small group tours up to 16 guests, called adventurers. Story was founded by Mark Story in 1988 and after much success, expanded to a full operation in 2008.

It remains family-owned in Centennial, Colorado and prides itself on providing unique world-class experiences based on the family's values, which they reflect in their services.

What Makes Them Stand Out?

Story Land & Sea distinguishes itself by its main focus on small group tours. With no more than 16 people on each tour, Story Land & Sea establishes an individualized and memorable experience. The company also utilizes the multiplicity of activities in each location, providing a wide-range of things to do in each itinerary. This also encompasses their pricing options which vary from luxury to affordable.

Who Travels With Them?

As mentioned above, Story Land & Sea provides a well-rounded pricing range. Prices start at about $3,900 and can reach to about $15,000 depending on the desired tour. Individuals who choose Story Land & Sea average between 35-55 years of age. Story Land & Sea also provides discounts for groups of 8 members or more.

Where Do They Operate?

Story Land & Sea operates in Western Europe, Africa, Mexico, Australia and the Pacific. The company does offer specifically focused tours of Italy as an area of expertise.

Why Travel With Them?

Those who want to feel culturally immersed in their surrounding should travel with Story Land & Sea. The fact that each tour group does not extend past the count of 16 means that each individual is able to get a more personalized experience.

The “tour captains” are Americans who work hand-in-hand with the local expert native guides and this provides a pristine expertise of the subject matter while also a very comfortable experience for their mostly North American clientele. Story Land & Sea prides itself on putting the guest first and exceeding their expectations.

About the company.

Our History

Mark Story, the founder of QueensLander, now Story Land & Sea®, began leading and hosting groups of people on tours and cruises starting in 1988. After many successful years of creating exciting group adventures as a part-time proprietor, Mark expanded the company to a full-time operation in 2003. When you travel with Story Land & Sea® your travel event is covered by our Tour Operator Professional Liability Insurance which includes a 1 million dollar "Errors & Omissions" policy. We require proof of liability coverage from our partner suppliers as an extra means of protection.

We choose to offer our guests only the finest in quality Italian hotels, and clean, comfortable economy hotels on certain itineraries. We offer select and a la carte dining in off-the-beaten-path restaurants owned and operated by Italian. We provide unique entertainment in the Italian cities and feature more admissions than other leading tour operators as well as gratuities on most of our Story branded travel events. We've found that our guests prefer our gratuities for our Tour Captains to remain optional and therefore they are at your discretion. Every trip is under the guidance of your travel host, the Story Land & Sea® Tour Captain. Your Captain is there to ensure your Italy tour is truly the vacation of a lifetime. They are friendly, service-driven professionals who care about your satisfaction throughout Italy!

By going the extra mile in providing outstanding service, knowledgeable guides, great menus and amenities, we believe you'll come back to us again and again.

Compare us with the larger companies and you'll see the Story Land & Sea® difference: personal service, genuine caring individuals who go the extra mile...we call it, "The Story Way."

I'd like to know more about your experiences in travel both with us and with other companies. Please drop me a line at Mark @ StoryLandSea . com (no spaces).

A Family of Brands

In addition to our luxury brand, Story Land & Sea®, we also operate Savvy Affordable Tours®, Walks by Story®, and premiering in 2017, Story Africa® and in 2018, Story Small Ships®.

Why should I go with Story Land & Sea® over other leading brand names?

Other than the size of our group, the variety in our itineraries, the location in the Italian cities and quality of our hotels, the type of Italian dinners we include and the service-driven nature of our tour Italian and American staff...hmm, what else is there? Oh yeah! You'll never be on a large bus, you'll never scamper after your tour director who is 40 plus people ahead of you, and you'll always be treated as our guest throughout your Italian vacation.

Our Philosophy is Service-Driven

We strive to provide a personal service unmatched in the Italy touring industry. From our pre-trip conversations and consultation, to on-tour experience in Italy, and to our follow-up after the tour: service-driven is our goal.

 • Key Characteristics
 • Pros and Cons

Queenslander architecture refers to a signature home type that originated in Queensland, Australia in the mid 1800s and continued to be built through the end of World War II. Queenslander homes come in a number of architectural variations. Originally localized subtropical adaptations of existing styles found elsewhere in Australia, their common use of local timber and various architectural features render them unique and recognizable.

Queenslander architecture is a native Australian residential type that emerged in the mid 19th century in Queensland, Australia and remains an important part of Australian architectural heritage.

SheraleeS / Getty Images

History of Queenslander Houses

The first Queenslander houses were built in 1850, and today remain one of Australia’s most distinct regional architecture types. Scholar John Freeland once characterized Queenslander homes as having "the strongest regional identity in creation of a native indigenous style.”

Queenslander homes are a regional type that were developed as a response to the humid, sub-tropical Queensland climate rather than a singular architectural style. Instead, Queenslander homes were tropical iterations of styles that were being built elsewhere. The homes that are considered Queenslander have evolved over time to include Victorian, Colonial, Federation, Ashgrovian, Arts and Crafts , Inter-War bungalows, as well as some post World War II examples.

Signature features such as local timber construction and corrugated iron roofs have become identifiers of a Queensland house, but these were initially practical rather than stylistic choices. The rise of sawmills in the mid 1800s made timber easily available and its lightweight quality made it easy to work with. Metal roofs were more robust than tile roofs making them more suitable for the humid, subtropical climate.

Another prominent feature of Queenslander homes, British Colonial-style verandas allow protection from sun and rain, help with air circulation, and provide an opportunity for indoor/outdoor living.

Queenslander homes began to fall out of favor after World War II as post-war reconstruction demanded cheaper housing construction. Spacious verandas were seen as expendable and interior timber walls were replaced with inexpensive man-made materials, and basic brick-clad American-style home styles became popular alternatives.

Today Queenslander homes stand out against subdivisions of suburban blandness and are seen as a classic old style. According to the Queensland Museum , “They are now valued as a key element of Queensland heritage and conservation and renovation of Queenslanders is widespread.”

In addition to historic renovations, today you can find Queenslander-style reproductions and modern iterations that may include contemporary additions in Queensland and elsewhere in Australia.

Key Characteristics of Queenslander Houses

 • Typically single-story detached houses built on individual plots of land
 • Simple, easily constructed designs give them a laid-back, cottage-like charm
 • Traditionally constructed from local lightweight timber with timber floors and walls
 • Feature large, prominent roofs typically made from corrugated metal to weather tropical storms
 • Signature verandas may be located on the front, back, and/or sides
 • Verandas typically include open and closed areas and may be modified to create additional bedrooms or living space on original homes
 • Houses are typically built high up on stumps that are positioned above ground
 • Areas beneath the house are sometimes used as storage, laundry area, car ports, or sometimes enclosed to provide additional living space
 • Prominent central or double "butterfly" staircases
 • Often painted in shades of white to emphasize natural light
 • Traditional floorplans include four to six rooms off a central corridor
 • Decorative features include gables, column brackets, louvers, fretwork fanlights, porticos, Colonial railings, balustrades, battens, and timber screens
 • Homes are traditionally built on individual plots of land which may include fruit trees, gardens, and picket fences

scotto72 / Getty Images

Pros and Cons of Queenslander Houses

 • Appeal to those looking for a home with local character, traditional charm, and architectural details
 • The tradition of building Queenslander homes high up on stumps makes it easy to build on uneven terrain without extensive groundwork excavation
 • In addition, ground shrinkage due to climate does not affect timber Queenslanders as much as brick houses
 • Building high off the ground allows for natural ventilation and prevents against flooding damage and termite infestations while enhancing views
 • Queenslander houses are built to maximize cross-ventilation, with windows and door frames positioned to promote air flow and maximize natural cooling to promote sustainability

“way overpriced”.

written by JayceeWilliams324 on 25/03/2016

Queenslander Tours - now Story - Land and Sea provides a mid-level tour at a luxury tour price. IMO, the tour provide little in the way of value for your money. The biggest asset is that it is a small group tour. You travel with a small group of 16 people. The is nice. The location of the hotels for the most part are good and centrally located except in Sorrento. The hotels themselves are old and not up to modern standards. There are certainly better choices you could pick on your own at the prices that they charge. We took the Italy's Great Cities tour. The touring itself generally runs from about 9AM until noon or 1PM. Basically a half day of touring each day. After that you're pretty much on your own until dinner. There are many "add ons" to the tour. We found later that you're much better off booking independent tours on your own. The tours you book on your own while there are less costly, convenient (they do pick you up at your hotel), and far more inclusive. For example, an independent tour of Capri and Ana capri can be booked for a fraction of the price Queenslander charges and includes a lot more. The included dinners, while as advertised as your choice from the regular menu is really a selection from a Queenslander menu. A number of choices but certainly not the regular menu. The restaurants are generally tourist restaurants in spite of Story, Land and Sea's claim that they are not. All in all, I would suggest looking at other alternatives if you desire a luxury tour at the price point of Story - Land and Sea. The other tour companies provide more "bang for your buck". In my opinion, Story, Land and Sea is highly overpriced for what you get.

Travel expert has described our tours as "the perfect way to see Italy." This endorsement was not solicited by Story or any of our representatives or entities. You may listen to this endorsement via his radio show - go to our website for the link. That said, not everyone's tastes are the same so we still can appreciate other perspectives. The reviewer provided both positive and negative comments about their experience. Reviewer: "IMO, the tour provide little in the way of value for your money." Story: Unlike most tours we include most everything in the package with the following exceptions: - Airfare - 3 Dinners - some lunches (1 lunch at our winery estate is included) - Items of a Personal Nature That said, the reviewer went on to point out: Reviewer: "The biggest asset is that it is a small group tour. You travel with a small group of 16 people. The is nice." Story: Yes, there is a dramatic difference between our tours and the mainstream. Most 'small group tours' in the mainstream start at around 24 to 48 travelers. The mainstream will feature large motorcoach buses. Story provides no more than 16 guests in a 20 seater, comfortable mini-coach in order to navigate the backroads of Italy. Reviewer: The location of the hotels for the most part are good and centrally located except in Sorrento. Story: About the hotels: Our hotels are located in the Heart of the Cities and Villages and the reviewer agrees. Sorrento, we are located about a 7 minute walk from the main street (by design). This affords us stunning views of the Bay of Naples and we enjoy the comfort of one of my favorite hotels in all of Italy. Reviewer: The hotels themselves are old and not up to modern standards. There are certainly better choices you could pick on your own at the prices that they charge. Story: Yes, our hotels are in centuries old buildings located in the hearts of the cities and towns. The reviewer's comment about 'not up to modern standards' is not accurate. They are very much up to modern standards in Italy. And the last comment is also inaccurate: there are NOT better choices at the prices we offer; this is simply not the case. Reviewer: We took the Italy's Great Cities tour. The touring itself generally runs from about 9AM until noon or 1PM. Basically a half day of touring each day. After that you're pretty much on your own until dinner. Story: The first part of this statement is correct. We do not enjoy or design itineraries that run like a traditional tour from sun-up to sun-down. This is not our style and our website and communications clearly reflect this reality. Our approach: Italy the Story Way® Our style of travel is not sun-up to sun-down sightseeing. We combine expert Italian guides, American Tour Captains and a nice balance of leisure time on most afternoons so you can soak up all that is Italy. Reviewer: "There are many "add ons" to the tour. We found later that you're much better off booking independent tours on your own. The tours you book on your own while there are less costly, convenient (they do pick you up at your hotel), and far more inclusive. For example, an independent tour of Capri and Ana capri can be booked for a fraction of the price Queenslander charges and includes a lot more." Story: There are not many optional add-ons to our tour. We have optional excursions that are available during free time however, the two most often booked are: Uffizi Gallery in Florence Borghese Gallery in Rome On the Enchanted Amalfi Coast Experience (separate from the Italy's Great Cities Tour) guests may opt for our Private Boat Tour of the Isle of Capri with Positano and the Amalfi Coast Highway. There is an additional charge for this excursion from the Amalfi Coast Extension. Travelers can indeed find less costly tours to the Isle of Capri — but they will not be on a private boat, with a Tour Captain, towels, refreshments and chilled premium beverages. Reviewer: "The included dinners, while as advertised as your choice from the regular menu is really a selection from a Queenslander menu. A number of choices but certainly not the regular menu. The restaurants are generally tourist restaurants in spite of Story, Land and Sea's claim that they are not." Story: Our approach to dining in Italy is unique. Everything is included, no hidden charges. At select restaurants you may choose from some of the most ordered and favorite Primi and Secondi items available — Don't see what you like? Choose from the main restaurant menu which is always on hand. We'll even bring the Maitre'd out to design a dinner — that's the Story Way® of Dining. Premium Wine (not house wine), Premium Beverages and Soft Drinks Flow. Story: Our restaurants are not "tourist" restaurants — stop and listen to the conversation going on around you and you will notice the Italian language is being spoken.

Certainly a lot of defensive explaining from Queenslander Tours. They cut corners every way they can. Guests in one hotel and then sending their Tour Captain at a hotel farther away and much cheaper hotel.

“I highly recommend it!”

written by sallydougherty123 on 20/07/2012

We just returned from Queenslander's Italy's great cities tour, and it was by far the best family vacation we have ever taken. We took our two teenage daughters and spent ten days seeing some of Italys' most beautiful attractions. Our tour captain, Mark, went above and beyond to make sure we were taken care of throughout the entire trip. The guided tours were done by local people and they were superb. The included dinners were all at top restaurants where the service, food and wine was superior. My husband and I happened to have an anniversary while we were in Italy, and Mark helped us to celebrate it with a beautiful dinner out and flowers in our room. All transportation to and from the different cities was taken care of so we didn't have to think about anything. The tour also provided leisure time so that we could shop and wander on our own. Our group was small, only 14 people, so we were always able to see the guides and keep up with what they were talking about. One of the best things was bypassing the long lines because of prior arrangements that Mark had made. We saw other tour groups standing in line for hours waiting to see things like the Colosseum and St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Because we were with Queenslander, we were able to walk in immediately upon arriving so we didn't have to waste any time. We enjoyed our trip so much, we are already talking about the next trip we plan to take with Queenslander Tours. Thank you Mark for a wonderful experience that we won't soon forget.

“Just returned from the Queenslander Italy Great Cities...”

written by on 04/10/2010

Just returned from the Queenslander Italy Great Cities Tour. Mark Story did a great job making us feel comfortable during the entire booking process and answered all our questions in advance of the tour. Our tour Captain, Caron, was first rate with organization and keeping the small group of 16 travelers up to the minute on when to have luggage ready and when to meet prior to dinners as well as just being a fine person. The local guides in Venice, Florence and Rome were top shelf and extremely informative in their respective cities. The hotels, meals and transportation met all our expectations. In short, Queenslander made our first visit to Italy all that we could ever imagine it to be and even better. Mark, please work on a group tour to Switzerland and Austria as that is very high on our trip list. Looking forward to our next trip, Jerry and Vickie Canavan

“We went on the Queenslander Great Italian Cities tour...”

written by Jany S on 24/07/2010

We went on the Queenslander Great Italian Cities tour in May 2010. It was over & beyond our expectations. The service was superb, our tour manager, Dan, went far & beyond anything we dreamed. The hotels & restaurants were fantastic, the food & wine were fabulous. The tour itself left nothing to be desired. We had found Queenslander on the internet & thought they had good reviews. But not being sure, we used our own travel agent & she looked into the tour for us. She found them to be quite reputable. They belonged to the same organizations as she and they were a member of the Better Business Bureau with great ratings. She felt confident that we would be fine and that it would be a wonderful trip. It was more than than, it a a dream vacation of a lifetime. We would travel with them again in a heartbeat!!! In fact, we hope they come up with a tour to France, because that's on the next "bucket list!!!"

I found this review very helpful because...I was unsure of the company as I hadn't heard of them. It gives me confidence that she said that her travel agent researched them and found Queenslander to be reputable.

“Never Do Business with QueensLander Tours ”

written by on 12/05/2010

Never Do Business with QueensLander Tours Here's Why: In Jan 2010, I sent him $10,000 via check in good faith for a luxury 10-day Italy Great Cities Tour, including round-trip airfare. In April, I was informed that our flight had been cancelled. Mr. Story informed me that although my $2000 airfare would be refunded, I had lost the remaining $8,000. He refused to refund even a portion of it, including many non-prepaid items and his profit, nor would he place us on a later identical trip. When I mentioned that his pocketing of my $8,000 was worthy of legal action, he told me, and I quote, "Bring it on." After 24 hours of his inaction in finding us an alternate flight, I called the airline myself, scheduled an alternate flight on the following day, and we flew to Venice and joined the trip a day late. It was an OK trip but without my own intervention, we would not have gotten to Italy, and I would have lost all $8,000.

QueensLander Tours has a very clear and detailed agreement that the guest signed in agreement with the company's terms and policies. Per our Tour Application agreement the guest's signature agreed to acceptance of our policies.

Please note the following information restates QueensLander's position: QueensLander Tours was 100% ready to provide the services provided to the client. As a matter of fact, the tour commenced on time without delay.

Airfare, which is a separate booking and not included in the land vacation, was arranged and the airline indicated they would offer a 100% refund. The land vacation was arranged and commenced on time as promised from the point of tour origination (Venice, Italy). Per our agreement with the guest, we were not able to refund the land portion as the point of cancellation was within the 14 days prior to tour commencement (a 100% cancellation fee).

Per the guest's comments in his filed complaint, we refute the following statements:
1. Guest stated we informed him, (he).."had lost the remaining $8,000."
QT: We told the guest that if he was not able to be at the point of tour origination he would begin losing his vacation payment. We reminded him of the many times we recommended he purchase trip interruption and cancellation insurance. We indicated he could arrive late possibly if the airlines were able to get him in country.

2. Guest stated we "refused to refund even a portion of it..."
QT: Upon the guest's return to the US, we offered a refund for the portion of the trip he had missed. The guest replied and asked us not to contact him again.

3. Guest stated, "When I mentioned that his pocketing of my $8,000 was worthy of legal action, he told me, and I quote, "Bring it on."" ~
QT: In context, we told the guest, "You are fully within your rights to pursue this matter legally and that we (QT) will be contacting legal counsel."

4. Guest stated "after 24 hours of his inaction in finding us an alternate flight, I called the airline myself, scheduled an alternate flight on the following day, and we flew to Venice and joined the trip a day late."
QT: In dealing with all of our guests who were affected by the volcanic ash delays I can see how it might appear we were doing nothing - this is far from the reality as we had requests into our air department for this guest as well as others who were affected.

The following excerpts are from the tour application agreement signed by the guest (copies of documents made available): "TOUR INFORMATION: PLEASE READ. Cancellation charges are payable as set out below except where otherwise stated. These charges are calculated from the date the written notice of cancellation is received by QueensLander. Travel Protection Plan premiums and amendment charges are non-refundable in the event of your cancellation. Cancellations are very costly and usually do not occur in time for resale of the cancelled travel event. If cancellation in writing is received by Queenslander more than 90 days prior to travel departure date (or 120 days for certain travel events), the deposit will be returned. For cancellations received within 90 days of departure date, the following per person cancellation fees apply: 89-30 days prior to travel departure date: 40% of total price; 29-15 days prior to travel departure date: 75% of total price; 14 days to departure day or later: 100% of total price; Higher cancellation fees apply for certain travel events. If flight changes are requested after the deposit has been received or if flights are canceled after tickets are issued, revision fees or airline cancellation charges will be applicable. If an air-inclusive travel event is canceled after air tickets have been issued, refund will be processed after return of air tickets (30-90 days). If QueensLander cancels a travel event, we will refund all monies paid to QueensLander; there is no additional liability. Refunds may take up to 90 days depending on travel event. QueensLander cannot assume responsibility for any additional costs or any fees relating to the issuance and/or cancellation of air tickets or other travel arrangements not made through QueensLander. Such events are likely to include war or threat of war, riots, civil strike, terrorist activity, industrial action, disease, natural or nuclear disaster, Act of God, fire, adverse weather conditions, closure of airports or ports, governmental action and all similar events. DELAY: We regret we are not in a position to render any assistance in the event of you being delayed at your outward or homeward points of departure. The airline concerned may however be able to provide alternate flights etc.

YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ARRIVING ON TIME TO POINTS OF ORIGINATION DESIGNATED BY QUEENSLANDER TOURS, QUEENSLANDER TOURS' ITINERARY OR AGENTS OF QUEENSLANDER TOURS. CANCELLATION AND AIR RESERVATIONS: Should you cancel your air reservations (which are booked separately) they must be purchased through QueensLander Tours in order to be covered by the Insurance.

REASONS FOR CANCELLATION IN RELATION TO INSURANCE: Certain restrictions apply and Insurance coverage will only be in place on certain scenarios. Please contact Travelex 360 at 1-800-965-8859 and advise them you booked your insurance through QueensLander Tours at location number 06-0051 and Plan Number 725C to find out about specific coverage details. This is easy! Everything written in the previous 2 reviews is very true! I took my daughter on "The Deluxe Tour of Italy's Great Cities" last May and we are still talking about it. Dan our tour captain, was so kind and sensitive to some of the people in our group who had issues with walking. A day in Rome when he knew there would be alot of walking, he booked a bus tour of the city for a member of our group. She never would have seen Rome, otherwise. My husband and I are talking about a trip to New Zealand. It will definitely be booked through Queenslander!

Couldnt agree more. Dan was our guide on italy vacation in june. Absolutely the best vacation we have ever taken.

“I found QueensLander Tours' Italy's Great Cities tour...”

written by jackcolton on 01/12/2005

I found QueensLander Tours' Italy's Great Cities tour to be one of the most balanced vacations I've taken: just enough sightseeing with admissions and enough leisure time to spend at will. They take extra time in Rome which I like. They offer two classes of hotels (concierge and super savings or saver?). All in all a great experience. We're using them again next year for Australia.

Customer

My wife & I have just completed the Journey of a Lifetime 16 day 15 night Trip as organised by Express to Russia. We also had a tour of St Petersburg & Moscow as well. The planning & execution of both trips was well above our expectations. The guides we had in all of our destinations were exceptional & the meet & greet & return to the stations went as smooth as clockwork. We had one minor hitch but that was through no fault of Express to Russia..a quick email from our Ipad had the problem resolved immediately We did have some misgivings at the start about doing the booking online ourselves but Elena was wonderful & answered all of our questions promptly & to our satisfaction. We felt comfortable with the whole process. The train trip is wonderful with Mongolia being a "special " place for us! We highly recommend Elena & her company. I am happy to answer any questions any body may wish to ask.

Thank you so very much for organizing our trip. Everything went wonderfully, and we really enjoyed our time in Russia. Moscow was beautiful, Lake Baikal was very cold, yet very fun to swim in, and the DPR Koreans that I met and made friends with in Vladivostok was beyond priceless. The guides you got for us did an exceptional job, and the drivers helped us out a lot as well. The hotels you got for us were great, and the room you got for us in the Vladivostok really made the long stay comfortable. The trains were also very enjoyable as was the Russian hospitality, although we really weren´t expecting people to be so generous or helpful. Overall, the trip was wonderful, and you arranged it magnificently. You really went out of your way to accommodate my schedule and help me with my schoolwork, so I really appreciate it; I couldn´t have done it without you. So once again, thank you for all of your efforts, and hopefully in the future you will be able to help us out again. Take care, and thank you for everything.

A train on Trans-Siberian Railway

Trans-Siberian Train

The main route of the Trans-Siberian Railway begins in Moscow and heads east to Vladivostok passing through Yekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk, Omsk, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Ulan Ude, Chita, Blagoveshchensk and Khabarovsk. The length of the route is 9259 km or 5753 miles. The train travels through 7 time zones and takes 8 days to complete without making overnight stops. The Trans-Siberian splits off into a few other fascinating directions as well:

Trans-Mongolian Train

The Trans-Mongolian Line was built from 1940 to 1956 between Ulan-Ude at Lake Baikal’s eastern shore and the Chinese capital Beijing. From Ulan-Ude the tracks go south towards Mongolia, crossing the great Gobi Desert and finally ending up in Beijing. This route is a mere 7867 kilometers long (Moscow - Beijing).

Trans-Manchurian Train

The Trans-Manchurian Line runs on the same route as the Trans-Siberian as far as Tarskaya, which is a few hundred miles east of Baikal. From Tarskaya, the line runs southeast into China near Zabaikalsk and makes its way down to Beijing. This route is a 9001 kilometres long (Moscow - Beijing).

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

Where does the trans-siberian railway start and where does it end.

The Trans-Siberian Railway starts in Moscow and extends all the way to Vladivostok on the Pacific Ocean. This route connects the European part of Russia, the Ural region, Siberia and the Russian Far East.

Are Beijing and Ulan Bator stops along the Trans-Siberian railway?

Beijing and Ulan Bator are parts of Trans-Mongolian railway - an offshoot of the main Trans-Siberian Railway. There are many options to arrange your travel: to visit Ulan Bator and or follow the Trans-Siberian railway to or from Vladivostok.

Can I use the hop-on hop-off principle when traveling by Trans-Siberian train?

Unfortunately, that is not possible. Train tickets in Russia are not open, so you will need a separate ticket with a particular date for each leg of your trip - for example, you may go all the way from Moscow to Vladivostok, but you will only be able to leave the train for short stops at the railway stations. In case if you would like to explore different cities on the way, you will need separate tickets, for example Moscow – Yekaterinburg, Yekaterinburg – Irkutsk, Irkutsk - Vladivostok. We offer carefully planned private tours that will allow you to visit several cities on your way.

Are there showers aboard Trans-Siberian trains?

Most of the Trans-Siberian trains do not have showers, and there are two WCs per each carriage. Please consider it while planning your trip. We recommend to choose shorter distances (that is, to plan more overnight stops in the cities along the way) to avoid the inconvenience of not showering. Another option is to choose the trip on board a more luxurious train which has all the on-board amenities that one might need.

Are meals included on the board of Trans-Siberian express train?

When traveling with RZD regular trains meals are not included. You can easily buy your meals in the restaurant car. Another option is to buy local specialties from “babushkas” (grandmothers, or simply Russian old ladies) on the short train stops along the way. This is a very authentic way of getting your meals.

What is the most comfortable way to travel on the Trans-Siberian railroad?

There are luxurious trains on the Trans-Siberian railway that are quite different from regular RZD trains and can be described as 5* hotels on wheels. We offer this type of accommodation on the Imperial Russia train where you can enjoy a full board menu, a shower and a comfortable compartment.
