The PGA Tour Champions (commonly known as the Champions Tour) is a senior golf tour specifically made for golfers above the age of 50. The Professional Golfers Association officially founded the tour over 40 years ago in 1980.

The beauty of golf is that it ages like fine wine. You’re never too old to play golf! Even if you want to play in a USGA Senior Amateur Championship .

This article goes in-depth about the senior golf tour five major tournaments. It highlights renowned championships, golfer stats, and a few fun facts.  However, for a more detailed review of the PGA TOUR Champions, you’ll want to read our ultimate guide .

Origin & History of the Senior Golf Tour

PGA Tour Champions, senior tour at the En-Joie Golf Club

The Senior PGA Championship has been unofficially active since 1937 as a high-profile tournament. It was exclusive for golfers above the age of 50.

However, in 1978, a profitable tournament between teams of the best senior golfers called the ‘Legends of Golf’ gave birth to the idea of an official senior golf tour.

The PGA formally established the ‘Senior PGA Tour’ in 1980. This senior tour was designed for golfers aged 50 and above to showcase their talent.

The 1980 tour consisted of only four events. For comparison, the 2021 tour consisted of 25 events. A lot has changed over the years!

The total prize money in 1980 was $475,000, which would be worth $1,707,901 today.

The next ten years, from 1980-1990, saw a considerable increase in the popularity of the senior tournament. The 1990 season consisted of thirty-eight official events with four major tournaments.

The entire prize money for the 1990 season was a whopping $17.8 million. In 2022, this prize money would be worth around $40,349,753.63 !

Fun Fact: Lee Trevino won 7 tournaments in the 1990 senior golf tour season. The most during the season.

Evolution of the PGA Tour Champions Name

In 2002, the tour was renamed the ‘Champions Tour’ till the 2015 season. The name PGA Tour Champions was adopted for the 2016 tour and onwards.

Qualifying & Playing on the Senior Golf Tour

Competitors in the senior golf tour have to play multiple tournaments throughout the season. These events are usually played over three rounds or 54 holes.

However, the five major championships of the tour are played over four rounds (72 holes) and have a 36-hole cut. Playing an additional round ensures bringing the best talent to the top of the standings.

Fun Fact: The average male golfer is estimated to hit a 219-yard drive. While the Senior Golf Tour’s average driving distance in 2022 was 282.0 yards . The longest drive of the tour was 308.8 yards by Padraig Harrington.

Senior Tour Age

With age comes wisdom. And the opportunity to qualify for the senior golf tour!

Here are a few requirements to qualify for the PGA Tour Champions:

  • The Senior Tour age requirement is 50 years old minimum.
  • Compete and qualify in the 72-hole Regional Qualifying Stage.
  • All successful qualifiers and exempt players must come in the top 12 of the Final Qualifying Stage between 78 golfers.

Spots in the Senior Golf Tour

Understanding the qualification system of the PGA Tour Champions is complicated, and hardly anyone understands it, according to Bobby Clampett , a professional Golf player, and analyst.

PGA Champions from previous years make up 30 of the 81 players on the field. Another 30 spots are given to players in the top 70 of the PGA Tour and Tour Champions.

The rest of the players include the World Golf Hall of Fame members and winners of previous PGA tours.

Players competing in the qualifying sessions also have a few spots reserved for them.

The 5 Senior Major Golf Championships & Their Winners

PGA Senior Tour with Senior Golfers making their final putts on the En-Joie Golf Course in NY

The Senior Major championships are a big deal in the tour. The best of the best golfers participate in Majors. Meaning that only players that meet certain criteria are given a spot in the Major tournament.

Major champions have their names go down in history books. This is one of the reasons why golfers praise Major events.

There are five major championships in the PGA Tour Champions. These championships differ from the other tours as they are played over four rounds (as opposed to 3 in the standard events).

Here are the five majors of the PGA Tour Champions, along with their relevant winners.

2024 Senior PGA Championship final results: Prize money payout, PGA Tour Champions leaderboard, how much each golfer won

seniors golf tour dates

The 2024 Senior PGA Championship final leaderboard is headed by winner Richard Bland, who topped the PGA Tour Champions leaderboard this week with a major win on the 2024 PGA Tour Champions schedule at The Club at Harbor Shores Resort in Benton Harbor, Mich.

Bland closed the second major of the senior season with a 63 to pull away from the field and win by three shots on 17-under 267. The Australian Richard Green finished runner-up on the week, while Greg Chalmers finished in third.

Jason Caron had an incredible week to finish T-4 with Asian Tour regular Scott Hend, who made it three Aussies in the top five.

Bland won the $630,000 winner's share of the $3,500,000 purse.

Senior PGA Championship recap notes

Bland wins the 11th PGA Tour Champions title of the year, getting into the winner's circle on the 50-plus tour.

The money Bland (were he a member) -- and every PGA Tour Champions player in the field -- earned is converted into Charles Schwab Cup points, with every dollar converted into two points during the Charles Schwab Cup playoffs.

There is no cut on PGA Tour Champions-run events, including the major championships they run. Every pro who finished the tournament was paid, though there was a 36-hole cut to the top 70 and ties as this event is run by the PGA of America.

The 2024 PGA Tour Champions schedule continues next week with the Principal Charity Classic in Iowa.

2024 Travelers Championship one and done picks, field, sleepers: Golf predictions, expert PGA betting advice

Mike mcclure locked in his expert one and done golf picks, projected leaderboard, and top sleepers for the travelers championship 2024 at tpc river highlands in connecticut.

collin-morikawa-usatsi-pga.jpg

The PGA Tour heads to Cromwell, Connecticut this week for the 2024 Travelers Championship. The final signature event gets underway on Thursday at TPC River Highlands. The players will be competing for a 2024 Travelers Championship purse of $20 million. The winner's payout is $3.6 million. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is the 4-1 betting favorite in the latest 2024 Travelers Championship odds. Other top contenders in the Travelers Championship field include Xander Schauffele (15-2), Ludvig Aberg (16-1), Collin Morikawa (16-1), Viktor Hovland (22-1), Patrick Cantlay (25-1), and Hideki Matsuyama (28-1).

With One and Done pools in the final stretch for the 2024 season, nailing your picks this week is critical. Should a $3.6 million winner's share on the line, should you target one of the favorites like Scheffler or Schauffele in your one and done picks this week? Or would it make sense to target a longshot like Matt Fitzpatrick, Max Homa, or Justin Thomas? Before locking in your 2024 Travelers Championship one and done picks,  you need to see what SportsLine DFS pro and PGA expert Mike McClure has to say .

The One and Done format is growing in popularity. It has several noticeable similarities to NFL Survivor pools, with the main difference being entries are not eliminated with a bad week. Players pick one golfer per week and earn points based on their selected golfer's prize money for that tournament. Golfers can only be used once per season, and the point format makes nailing majors, signature events, and big money tournaments critical.

McClure is a DFS legend with over $2 million in career winnings, and he's been red-hot on his PGA picks dating back to the PGA Tour restart in June of 2020. McClure uses his proprietary simulation model to analyze the field and crush his golf picks.

McClure has been on fire with his One and Done picks in 2024. At The American Express he backed Justin Thomas, who finished in third place and took home $635,600. At the Genesis Invitational, McClure tabbed Patrick Cantlay, who finished in fourth place at the signature event, as his top OAD pick. At the Cognizant Classic, McClure's top one and done pick, Min Woo Lee, finished in a tie for second place. Finally, at the Arnold Palmer Invitation, another signature event, McClure recommended using Scottie Scheffler and Will Zalatoris. The Result: Scheffler won the event by five strokes, and Zalatoris finished in fourth place.

His hot steak continued at the Players Championship, where McClure again recommended using Scheffler (if was still available) and Xander Schauffele. Both players were in contention until the end, with Scheffler coming out with the win and Schauffele finishing in second place. Then, at the Valspar Championship, McClure listed Cameron Young, who finished in second place, as his top OAD pick.

More recently, at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, McClure recommended using 50-1 longshot Alex Noren in One and Done pools. Noren would go on to be in contention until the end, before finishing in third place, two strokes off the lead! And at the PGA Championship, McClure targeted Viktor Hovland and Collin Morikawa, who finished in third and fourth places, respectively. He targeted Morikawa again at the Memorial Tournament, where Morikawa finished second.

Finally, at last week's U.S. Open, McClure's top two one and done picks were Bryson DeChambeau and Rory McIlroy. DeChambeau finished in first place and McIlroy in second.

Now, McClure has his sights on the 2024 Travelers Championship and just revealed his optimal One and Done picks. They are a must-see for any player looking for an edge in their One and Done pool. You can only see McClure's Travelers Championship 2024 one and done picks at SportsLine .

Top 2024 Travelers Championship One and Done picks

One of McClure's favorite OAD plays this week for the Travelers Championship is Collin Morikawa. The 27-year-old, who was recently named to the U.S. Olympic Golf Team, has been playing some of the best golf of his career as of late, with five top-10 finishes in his last eight starts. Morikawa is no stranger to finding success against elite fields and has two major championships on his career resume.

Morikawa is one of the best ball strikers in the world, and has the all around game that makes him a threat to win any tournament he enters. He is currently ranked sixth on the PGA Tour in total strokes gained (1.275), 11th in strokes gained (1.196), and 15th in strokes gained off-the-tee (0.539). McClure believes he will be in contention until the end at the Travelers Championship.  You can see who else to back at SportsLine .

How to make Travelers Championship 2024 One and Done picks

McClure is also targeting another golfer for his 2024 Travelers Championship one and done picks who has a long track record of success against elite competition. This multiple time PGA Tour winner has the ability to win any tournament he enters, and is one of the most talented golfers in this field. You can find out who it is, and check out all of McClure's Travelers Championship one and done picks at SportsLine .

Who wins the the Travelers Championship 2024, and which golfers should you target for your one and done picks this week at TPC River Highlands? The four golfers who won a u.s. open at pinehurst no. 2, share this article.

seniors golf tour dates

The U.S. Open returned to Pinehurst No. 2 for a fourth time in 2024.

The first three were staged there in 1999, 2005 and 2014, and while it’s been 10 years since the last one, the venue is on tap to host again four more times: 2029, 2035, 2041 and 2047. This is a result of the USGA declaring Pinehurst an anchor site in 2020.

Each of the three championships was unique, with a varied cast of winners.

The 1999 championship is still talked about and was memorialized with a statue by the champion. The 2005 winner made the U.S. Open his one and only PGA Tour win. The 2014 champ routed the field, setting a few tournament records along the way. The 2024 winner earned his second U.S. Open title in dramatic fashion.

Here now is a look at the four winners of the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2.

1999 – Payne Stewart

1999 U.S. Open

Payne Stewart celebrates after winning 1999 U.S. Open.

Payne Stewart claimed the ’99 Open title after draining a 15-foot par putt to beat Phil Mickelson by a shot at 1 under, the only golfer in red numbers that year. Stewart actually trailed by a shot with two to go. Vijay Singh and Tiger Woods tied for third with Steve Stricker finishing solo fifth.

Stewart died four months later in a plane crash. In 2005, he was honored at Pinehurst with a large statue that recreates his iconic reaction after winning in 1999. Ahead of the 2024 Open, Pinehurst moved the statue to the venue’s main entrance.

2005 – Michael Campbell

2005 U.S. Open

Michael Campbell kisses the trophy after winning the 2005 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2.

Michael Campbell was the lone golfer in red numbers after his final-round 69 in 2005, clinching his one and only major title. Campbell was the second golfer from New Zealand, following Bob Charles at the 1963 British Open, to win a major. Tiger Woods also shot a final-round 69 but a three-putt on the 17th hole proved costly, as Campbell would win by two shots. This proved to be his only PGA Tour victory.

2014 – Martin Kaymer

Martin Kaymer was the eighth, and the most recent, wire-to-wire winner at a U.S. Open. He holds the record for lowest 36-hole total (130) and his tied for third for lowest 54-hole total (202). Only three golfers produced a larger margin of victory than Kaymer’s eight shots (over Rickie Fowler and Erik Compton).

2024 – Bryson DeChambeau

Bryson DeChambeau made an all-world sand save on the 18th hole, leading to a clutch par putt that clinched a one-stroke win over Rory McIlroy, who finished solo second by a shot for a second year in a row in the national championship.

Steve Stricker sees AmFam Championship 'slip away,' loses to Ernie Els in playoff

seniors golf tour dates

MADISON – Ernie Els got him again.

Steve Stricker and Els have gone head-to-head for nearly three decades, and they’ve had a match-play history dating back that long also. On three occasions, Els bested Stricker one-on-one and once more in a team format.

And though the American Insurance Family Championship is a stroke-play event, the 2024 tournament came down to a duel between the friends over the back nine Sunday at University Ridge Golf Course and Els eventually erased a four-shot deficit over the final seven holes to force a playoff.

Then, Stricker admittedly rushed himself over a short par putt to extend the tournament. It lipped out and Els was abruptly the tournament champion.

“He feels bad winning like that and I feel bad giving it to him like that, but he played well,” Stricker said. “He strung together I think three birdies on that back side when he had to and he kind of answered the call when he had to because I had a three- or four-shot lead and kind of just let it slip away.”

When he learned of their final round pairing on Saturday, Stricker had mentioned how Els chased him down in the 1996 World Match Play Championship , as Els made seven birdies over the final 16 holes to erase a six-shot deficit . And he acknowledged he felt that again at University Ridge Golf Course.

“I thought about it again today, I'm like here we go again,” Stricker said. “It's like I had him down and that was the times, especially like on 13, 14, 15, 16 where I could have kind of closed the door. That's what I should have done and I just didn't do it. I didn't hit it in there close enough, didn't make the putts and hats off to him, he did.”

Els had also bested Stricker in head-to-head competition at the 2009 World Golf Championship Match Play and the 2013 Presidents Cup.

“I wanted to stay close to him because I knew Steve was going to be the guy,” Els said. “He's such a classy player. But I got so angry with myself bogeying (the sixth hole), the par 5, and then bogeying seven, which is such a soft bogey, and then not birdieing nine, then my putts started slipping by the hole. I was a little frustrated, but somehow I kept hitting good shots and then started making putts. Then it became a two-horse race from back nine on 12, 13.

“Then we kind of, you know, hung in there, made birdies on the same holes and had a first playoff hole. It was basically the guy that made the first big mistake was going to lose.”

It is the second consecutive tournament title for Els, who now has five times on the PGA Tour Champions.

Stricker was kicking himself for letting the tournament end the way it did as his par-saving putt on the 18 th unexpectedly stayed out of the cup.

“I was like you guys, I was in shock,” Els said of the sudden end. “He's the best putter we have probably in the world and as I said, conditions were tough. The short putts when that gust comes, it throws you off a little bit, so it can happen to the best of us.”

Earlier in the afternoon, it looked as if Stricker was about to become the tournament’s first back-to-back champion. He made a nervy par on the fourth hole with a tough up-and-down from behind the green, and it was Els who blinked first with bogeys on the sixth and seventh holes to fall two behind.

Stricker then gave himself some breathing room with a birdie on the par-3 eighth to get to 11-under and a three-shot advantage. He pushed it to a four-shot lead after another birdie on the par-5 11 th .

Els would recover, though, rattling off three consecutive birdies on holes 12-14. His long birdie putt on the par-4, 14 th followed a Stricker bogey after he missed the green and made bogey, and the four shot advantage was wholly erased.

“Unfortunate to give it away like that, but all in all it was a good week,” Stricker said. “Got right in there, had some opportunities on that back side that I bogeyed 14 I think it was with a wedge in my hand, and 13, didn't even have a really good look at it. So I had some wedges in my hands, too, that I really should have capitalized on and didn't. Did some good things, but thinking back, a few things that I could have done better with.”

It is the second playoff loss in the tournament for host Stricker, who lost to Jerry Kelly in a three-man playoff that included Retief Goosen in 2019.

Els and Stricker started the day tied at 9-under, and playing David Duval began the round two shots back . He finished with a 2-over 74 however, to finish his tournament at 5-under and tied for 14 th .

Cameron Percy finished at 9-under for the tournament and finished third. Thomas Bjørn, Stephen Ames and Doug Barron tied for fourth at 8-under.

Skip Kendall closes strong, Jerry Kelly battles on

Fox Point native Skip Kendall, making his first PGA Tour Champions start of the year and playing in just his second tournament of the year, finished with a 2-under 70 to claim a tie for 19 th place at 4-under. Kendall now primarily teaches out of golf schools in Orlando and Palm Coast, Florida.

“Honestly, for not playing, you know, I feel like I can still compete out here,” said Kendall, who will be doing some teaching in Milwaukee this coming week. “I did leave some out there. I know if I was playing week in, week out, maybe that wouldn't have happened. Maybe it would have, maybe it wouldn't, but I don't think it would have. It's a nice feeling knowing that I still can compete with these guys and it's a great week to come out and see everyone, honestly. I mean, Steve gets a great field here and I owe him a lot for always having me come back here and play. Always helps me out.”

Kelly, who disclosed earlier in the week that he is undergoing treatment for rheumatoid arthritis while playing this season, struggled home with a 5-over 77 final round.

The two-time tournament champion (2019, 2021) began the day three shots back of Stricker and Els, and while he acknowledged his body didn’t quite feel right the first two days he felt a low number was in him. He hoped he could find it Sunday, but he bogeyed the opening hole and fell 5-shots back in short order.

Kelly finished the tournament at 1-under, tied for 38 th .

University of Wisconsin alumnus Mario Tiziani closed an even-par 72 to finish 1-under for the tournament and tied for 38 th . He will compete in the U.S. Senior Open June 27-30 in Newport, Rhode Island.

Fox Point’s Michael Crowley, the head PGA pro at Morningstar Golfers Club in Waukesha, shot his best round of the tournament with a 1-over 73. This was his first PGA Tour Champions appearance, and he finished 71 st at 7-over.
