“it is better to work with nature than against it” H.R.H. The Prince of Wales

Highgrove House was built in 1796 to 1798 by John-Paul Paul, and believed to have been designed by architect Anthony Keck. The Paul family lived there until 1860.

The Duchy of Cornwall acquired the house in 1980 and since then H.R.H The Prince of Wales has devoted much energy to transforming the gardens around the house. With the help and advice of notable individuals and the dedicated assistance of the garden staff, what was once a somewhat bleak landscape is now one of the most creatively inspired gardens of today. A series of interlinked areas, each with their own character and purpose, weave magically around the garden, with the house always visible in the distance.

The Highgrove Meadow:   On the advice of Miriam Rothschild, one of the country’s leading advocates of biodiversity, The Prince re-created a lost habitat by re-establishing a wild flower meadow.   The meadow now boasts over 30 different varieties of native plants including ox-eye daisies, yellow rattle, common spotted orchid, meadow crane’s bill and ragged robin, creating a rich tapestry of colour and diversity.

The gardens are also home to part of the national collection of Beech trees and large leaved Hostas which His Royal Highness maintains on behalf of Plant Heritage/NCCPG, of which The Prince is Patron. This organization conserves the diversity of our plant heritage through its national collections.

A keen gardener, the Prince of Wales has devoted much time to planning and designing the gardens. He has created a wild garden, a formal garden and a walled kitchen garden.

Take a virtual tour of the gardens at Highgrove House, the home of Prince Charles

May 1, 2019 • 2 min read

highgrove house garden tour

You can now take a virtual tour of Highgrove Gardens, the gardens at Highgrove House, the private residence of Prince Charles and his wife Camilla , the Duchess of Cornwall. In honour of National Gardening Week, Google Arts and Culture has launched a comprehensive virtual tour of the property, which was built in a Georgian neoclassical style between 1796 and 1798 and is located in Gloucestershire, England .

Travel News - Highgrove House 1

Prince Charles has lived there since 1980 and has made extensive changes to both the house and garden, which has been a passionate project for him. Sustainability is a focus of the garden, which uses a rainwater irrigation system and solar panels. All waste materials are recycled and a specially designed reed bed sewage system manages the estate’s waste water. The gardens are maintained to ensure they thrive in complete harmony with nature, and are full of personal touches dreamed up by the Prince.

Travel News - Highgrove House 2

The Stumpery is a tranquil corner of the garden, and a rich habitat for wildlife. It has a stone water feature, crowned with a canopy of gunera, that's a favourite nesting spot for ducks. It also features Prince Charles's prized collection of large and giant-leaved hostas - one of his favourite plants. The treehouse in this garden was originally built in a holly tree for the young Princes William and Harry, and is now enjoyed by the Prince of Wales's grandchildren, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Travel News - Highgrove House 3

Other gardens that can be seen on the virtual tour include the Cottage Garden, the Thyme Walk, the Lily Pool Garden and the Sundial Garden. The Cottage Garden is a garden of two halves, old and new. The new one has a vibrant colour scheme of yellow, pink and blue, inspired by Tibetan silks. The old one has a more classic, quintessentially English feel. The Sundial Garden was originally designed by Lady Salisbury as a rose garden, and now boasts a bold planting scheme, enhanced by the use of willow structures.

Prince Charles's Private Gardens at Highgrove House Will Open to Visitors Later This Spring

Here's how you can tour the grounds of royal's private residence.

Prince Charles Prince Harry At Highgrove

Fortunately for fans of botany and the royals alike, grounds of his Tetbury property are open to the public for tours during the warmer months of the year. Here's everything you need to know to plan a visit Prince Charles's private gardens:

The gardens are open for tours on select dates throughout the year.

While "spring walks" are sometimes available on certain days in February and March, the gardens are officially open for tours from April to October.

If you'd like to visit the gardens, you must pre-book a tour.

Tickets for a two-hour guided garden tour , in which you'll explore the garden in a group format, are £27.50 per person, and are sold on a first-come first-serve basis. If you'd prefer something a bit fancier, tickets for a " Champagne tea tour ," which includes an afternoon tea with Champagne, and features a smaller tour group size, is also available for £79.95 per person, or £155 per couple. Or, if you'd rather have a private tour of the gardens for your party , those start at £450.

For a preview of what types of plants you might see on a visit, check out the video here:

All profits from the tours go to the Prince of Wales's Charitable Foundation , an organization which issues small grants in support of "community-based projects" in the U.K.

It's also worth noting that the tours are only open to those guests aged 12 and over, and all visitors must bring a photo ID. For more information on how to plan your visit, head to highgrovegardens.com .

The estate has some pretty strict rules about cell phones and cameras.

"Cameras, binoculars or any form of recording equipment are not allowed on the Estate. Mobile phones may not be used on the Estate. If you have one with you, please make sure it is switched off at all times and leave it in your car or coach during your visit," reads a note on the garden's website.

Charles Garden Highgrove

Unfortunately, visitors cannot go inside Highgrove House.

As it is the private residence of Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, it is closed to the public.

The gardens are wheelchair accessible.

But keep in mind that some parts of the gardens feature uneven ground, which could prove difficult to navigate. Per the website's FAQ , "Wheelchair users must be accompanied by a strong companion and bring their own wheelchair that is suitable for bumpy terrain and unmade paths." It is also recommended that guests call the office ahead of time to arrange disability access requirements. That number is 0303 123 7310.

And tours run rain or shine.

So be sure to pack your wellies !

Bucket List Experience

Exterior of the front of the house covered in shrubbery

It doesn’t get much more bucket list than strolling through the private gardens of an English king. Highgrove House is the private home of King Charles III, and every spring and summer, the gardens open to the public for guided tours.

Designed and developed over forty years, the organic gardens spread over six different areas, from a colour-filled arboretum – home to acers, magnolia and cherry trees – to the Victorian ‘stumpery’, where tree ferns rise up beside natural wood sculptures, and a wildflower meadow.

Tours are led by the King’s garden guides, who have an encyclopaedic knowledge of Highgrove and all its treasures.

Getting there & doing it

Highgrove is two miles south of Tetbury, around two hours’ drive from London. Reaching the gardens by public transport is difficult, requiring two buses from Kemble station.

All visits are guided tours, which must be pre-booked well weeks, if not months, in advance. The tour lasts around two hours. After your tour, have lunch or tea and cake on the terrace of the Orchard Tea Room. All food is made on site using only locally-sourced produce – some of it grown in the gardens.

When to do it

Highgrove Gardens are open from April to October, with tours available on set days. See the website for listings.

Living in harmony with nature has long been a passion for King Charles. When he came to Highgrove in 1980, the house had a kitchen garden with neglected air and some underutilized pastureland. But in the ensuing decades, King Charles designed and led the development of the gardens to become a masterpiece of sustainability and ethical management.

A Look at King Charles's Highgrove Gardens

charles highgrove garden

Today, there are 15 acres of interconnected gardens, which are managed organically by incorporating techniques such as recycling waste materials, utilizing natural predators as pest control, and capturing rainwater for irrigating the gardens. King Charles has been hands-on for many years, often feeding the chickens and planting trees by hand.

While Highgrove House is not open to the public, the garden is for part of the year, welcoming more than 40,000 visitors annually. In fact, the king said in June 2019 , “One of my great joys is to see the pleasure that the garden can bring to many of the visitors and that everybody seems to find some part of it that is special to them.”
