WindTre SIM Cards & eSIM: Detailed Guides for Tourists

WindTre is among the best mobile network operators in Italy providing simple SIM cards and eSIM connectivity for foreigners.

This guide provides complete information about using WindTre while traveling to Italy such as the coverage, speed, different SIM card alternatives available, whether there is an eSIM or not, the costs involved, and an illustrated procedure for activating this facility.

Table of Contents

WindTre SIM Card & eSIM

1. Quick facts about WindTre

  • It has a more than thirty-one million mobile customer base, which makes it the second-largest operator after TIM in Italy.
  • WindTre relies on 4G LTE and legacy 3G networks, with good coverage across national boundaries.
  • Average 4G download speeds of around 45Mbps and peak speeds up to 300Mbps in some areas.
  • Apart from pre-paid and post-paid mobile plans, WindTre has Home broadband services.

When traveling to Italy, tourists can buy WindTre SIM cards and eSIM profiles either online or from stores.

2. WindTre Coverage & Speed in Italy

2.1. windtre coverage in italy.

According to Opensignal’s May 2023 report on Italy’s mobile network experience.

Italy Mobile Operator Coverage

  • The second-worst 4G coverage is among the five national operators at WindTre with a 10 point-scale value of 8.7. For WindTre users, there is a likelihood of experiencing poor quality communication and slow data speeds in weak 4G coverage zones.
  • The 5G coverage of WindTre has a score of 7.2, meaning that there are more chances of users connecting to 5G networks in big cities.

WindTre does not have a wide coverage like several other national operators though it has greatly improved in the past few years. In the next year, the company will continue investing in expanding the 5G network and improving coverage as well.

2.2. WindTre speed

According to Opensignal’s May 2023 report on Italy’s mobile network experience, WindTre users saw average overall download speeds of 32.4Mbps and average overall upload speeds of 10.8Mbps. This places WindTre second in terms of average download speed and upload speed, behind Vodafone but ahead of TIM, Iliad, and Fastweb.

Italy Mobile Operators Speed

The speed on WindTre depends on the region. WindTre holds the most average download speeds in the Nord Est and Nord Ovest regions, while Vodafone comes with the highest speed of downloads in the Centro and Sud regions.

Generally, WindTre has a good speed but is not the fastest among Italian players. Nevertheless, WindTre has invested much into enhancing its networks; hence speed will be enhanced within the next few years.

Windtre with ntt data and radcom to implement sustainable virtual drive test technology and enhance its customers' mobile experience on italy's roads and railway lines.

Through the use of Virtual Drive Test, WINDTRE analyzes the quality of mobile network services along Italy's road and rail routes, achieving significant time and cost savings, as well as a significant reduction in CO2 emissions to the environment.

TEL AVIV, Israel , Feb. 7, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- RADCOM Ltd. (Nasdaq: RDCM) - Introduced in Italy drive test innovation that brings mobile service quality monitoring to the user to a virtual level. This ensures greater efficiency and reduced impact on the environment. WINDTRE , the multiservice operator offering connections, energy, and insurance products, is also adopting RADCOM Virtual Drive Test technology in the Cloud and using the specialized services of NTT DATA Italia to assess and optimize its radio access network (RAN), ensuring high-quality in the mobility services offered to customers throughout Italy .

RADCOM Virtual Drive Test (VDT) is offered as Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) on Cloud Platforms). The technology uses - in full compliance with confidentiality and security requirements - real network traffic data, reducing the need for teams moving around the territory to take measurements and making it possible to identify large-scale priorities for engineering interventions to improve the service offered to the customer.

Using the Virtual Drive Test service, NTT DATA analyzed data collected over a 14-day period on 143,471 km of road and rail network, including more than 600 million data connections and more than 9 million phone calls for a total of 135,258 hours of voice and data traffic*, compared to the 140 hours* that could have been conducted with a traditional drive test over the same time frame. With this technology, the volume of data that can be analyzed to identify opportunities for customer service improvement increases significantly.

In addition, from an environmental point of view, with the Virtual Drive Test, the emission of about 15 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere has been avoided***.

"RADCOM's Virtual Drive Test solution and NTT DATA's specialized services provide vital and detailed information to our work teams, contributing significantly to the continuous improvement of mobile network services," said Massimiliano Testa , Head of Quality and Customer Experience at WINDTRE. "Given the importance our company places on the quality levels offered to customers, we greatly appreciate the fruitful collaboration with RADCOM and NTT DATA, which aims to ensure an excellent customer experience."

"We are proud to have proposed and implemented RADCOM's Virtual Drive Test solution in WINDTRE, which recognized before others the validity of this solution that not only allows for network optimization, but also significantly reduces CO2 emissions compared to traditional approaches," said Andrea Fravega, Vice President Telco & Media at NTT DATA Italy.

"We are excited to work with WINDTRE, Italy's leading mobile operator, and NTT DATA, a company with recognized expertise in mobile network optimization and planning. The Golden Rules of Solo Travel

By Olivia Morelli

The joys of traveling solo are endless. It is freeing to explore new places alone—you can go where you please, eat when you want, and enjoy quality time with yourself uninterrupted. The interest in solo travel has been slowly rising for a while, in tandem with the desire for deeper, slower, more connective trave l. For many, solo travel is the perfect way to achieve this—it provides an opportunity to trust your instinct, go with your gut, and get lost in the experience. You rely on yourself rather than on others’ whims or desires.

But, if you’re not a seasoned solo traveler, it can be a daunting prospect. In an age of constant connectivity, the idea of being alone for an extended period of time is stark. Below, we spoke to travelers who frequently book solo trips about their golden rules for traveling alone.

Dining alone isn’t weird

For most people, the thought of dining alone is one of the biggest barriers to traveling solo. But once you get past the conviction that everyone is noticing or judging you, it’s a totally freeing experience. “Dining alone isn’t as uncommon as you might imagine,” says Estée Lalonde, a creative director and influencer with a passion for solo travel. “I personally find it empowering! Sometimes I bring a book with me or watch an episode of my favorite show on Netflix with my headphones on, but other times I just enjoy the atmosphere and end up chatting to the people at the table next to me.”

Book counter dining at restaurants if it's too weird for you

If you are someone who does feel uncomfortable about dining alone, opt for a bar or counter seat. It’s much less intimidating than having a whole table to yourself, and you are more likely to end up chatting to the staff or the person sitting next to you. "The first time I went out for a meal alone, I went to JG Melon on the Upper East Side of New York City ,” Sarah James, Condé Nast Traveller ’s deputy digital editor, says. “I took a book, and nervously shuffled onto a bar stool for my burger—but ended up chatting away to the charming bartender and the women sat next to me. Now I often opt for a counter seat when eating alone, and no longer take a book with me. Either I end up talking to someone or just enjoy the peace. A general rule I live by—we're all so wrapped up in our own lives, no one is paying much attention to other people."

Consider a hostel

Not only are hostels affordable, but they're also great places to meet fellow travelers—whether they're in the same solo boat as you or not. Many have a cheap bar onsite that allows you to fall into natural conversation with compatriots who may become friends, or at least will have great tips for things to do.

Fake it till you make it

Most people feel nervous about meeting new people, and introverts especially struggle to make the first move when in a new place. But remember that everyone is in the same boat, and most solo travelers will have experienced those same emotions. The first five seconds are the hardest, but once you’ve introduced yourself, you’ll quickly realize it wasn’t as big a deal as you originally thought. You’d kick yourself if you let a bit of shyness ruin your trip, so use that as the motivation you need to approach a fellow traveler. And remember, if you present with confidence, that will show—fake it til you make it is a reliable life rule to follow.

travel daily windtre

Never consolidate all of your assets

“This is a lesson that I learned the hard way after getting pickpocketed in a crowded Jerusalem marketplace,” says global digital director Arati Menon, “I had stupidly carried all my credit cards and cash with me—luckily no passport!—in a single wallet and as a result, had no way of paying the hotel bill later that day when I checked out. Now, I always split my cards and cash (and IDs) across various places: wallet, purse, luggage—and if possible, store at least one of these in a locked safe back at the hotel.”

Don’t fear loneliness

“Remember that a bit of loneliness can be bracing and character-building,” says Toby Skinner, Condé Nast Traveller ’s features director. “My experience traveling is generally that people are decent, kind and interesting—and you found that out most acutely by being alone (whereas everyone leaves couples well alone.) Some of my most memorable travel experiences have been on my own—like when I was stranded in Nanjing at 2 a.m. by a delayed train in 2001, and a local student let me bunk in his dorm room for the night.”

Take the train

“While even the most extroverted of travelers avoid chit chat like the plague on a plane, I have found traveling by train to be a much more social means of transport," says associate editor Hannah Towey. "Last summer, I traveled solo on the Amtrak Coastal Starlight from Santa Barbara to San Francisco and spent the entirety of the 9-hour journey in the communal observation lounge, where fellow travelers rotated in and out, sharing tables and playing cards while admiring the views. As the sun set on the second half of the trip, a few musically-inclined passengers formed an impromptu band complete with an acoustic guitar and mandolin. Word slowly spread and others trickled in from other parts of the train to take turns singing songs in different languages. It might take a few more hours than a flight, but who knows, you might even find the Ethan Hawke to your Julie Delpy and spend a spontaneous evening together in Vienna.”

Plan around cultural events

Arriving at a destination just as the locals are gearing up for an important cultural event can be an incredible way to immerse yourself straight away. Look up religious festivals, bank holidays, and street parties to see what time is best to visit and plan accordingly. You’ll get a real flavor of the people, the food, and even the music, and you might end up making friends along the way.

Research solo travel in your destination

As obvious as “do your research” sounds, it’s an important step to remember. Look at online forums and speak to people who have previously visited the destination. What safety precautions should you be taking? Is it safe to walk between locations, or is it better to use taxis? Are taxis easy to find? What is the destination's culture like after dark? For women, in particular, it is best to plan ahead to avoid getting stranded in remote neighborhoods after dark.

Have a rough plan for each day

It can feel daunting waking up in a brand new destination and not knowing where to start, so make sure to create vague itineraries for your trip. What are your non-negotiables in this destination? Any big attractions you want to tick off? Restaurants you’ve been desperate to try? Beaches you’ve always wanted to visit? “I like to have 3-5 little activities in mind for each day, like visiting a particular store or trying the local cuisine,” Estée tells us. “If you have a bit of direction you can leave space in between each activity to be spontaneous and discover the local area.”

Build in group activities

Booking tours and group events is a great way to meet other travelers. Most hostels have a list of activities available for guests to sign up for, and if not, then there are walking tours or live music events at local bars. “Try to see people as opportunities," Toby advises. “I'd build in communal activities to your itinerary and remember that you’ll probably never see these people again, so you have nothing to lose in almost any interaction and possibly a lot to gain—though there might be a touch of male privilege in that.”

Walk as much as you can

“Sometimes when I travel to a new place, I can be nervous to leave my bed as a solo traveler,” Estée admits. “As soon as I get outside and start walking I feel better—like I’m part of the city and that I belong there!” Exploring by foot is a great way to get to know the bones of a destination. You’ll soon create a mental map of the area nearest your accommodation and might stumble upon some hidden gems you wouldn’t have come across otherwise.

Allow yourself to be spontaneous

On that note, try to allow yourself some spontaneity. Having a rough plan is definitely advisable, but don’t stop yourself from following your gut if you have a sudden urge to pop into a shop, follow the sound of the crowds or head for the beach. It’s often the spur-of-the-moment decisions that result in the best experiences.

Bring good books

It’s easy to whip out your phone and rely on scrolling when you’re by yourself, and while that is a great way to decompress if you’re feeling jittery, there are few things more romantic than settling in at a street-side cafe and getting lost in the pages of a good book .

Bring a journal

Journaling has become a popular pastime of late, and keeping a travel journal is a great way to combine the mental health benefits of getting out your thoughts and feelings with the memories and emotions of traveling solo. “I find all of that time alone enables me to clear my head, and journaling is a great way to regulate those emotions,” Estée explains.

Keep a separate copy of your personal details

Sounds old school, but in lieu of printing out paper copies of all your bank details, phone numbers, and accommodations details, try keeping a document of all your information and emailing it to yourself. This way, if you lose your phone, you can ask the reception of your accommodation or staff at a hotel/restaurant/bar to borrow a phone and log into your email account to access anything you need. It’s also worth memorizing your card details and any emergency phone numbers (both personal and local emergency service numbers).

Take other safety precautions

There are plenty of ways to protect yourself when traveling alone. Sharing your location with your friends and family back home is a lovely way to keep in touch without having to actually message them—they can watch your journey from afar and keep track of your whereabouts if you haven’t contacted them for a while. Remember to bring a padlock for your backpack and lockers if you’re staying in hostels, and study basic phrases in the language of your destination, just in case you get lost and need some help.

Don’t forget insurance

There’s always something that doesn’t go to plan on any trip, and as a solo traveler, you’ll want to make sure you mitigate any stress that comes from changing itineraries. Buying travel insurance is the best way to protect yourself from any transport cancellations and unforeseen circumstances, and will cover any costs from injuries or thefts. Sounds scary, but it’ll be worth it if the worst happens!

Storms cause travel troubles at DFW Airport

Delays and cancelations continue at DFW Airport after Sunday evening’s storms affected thousands of flights.

DALLAS - Delays and cancelations continue at DFW Airport after Sunday evening’s storms affected thousands of flights.

The airport had big problems on Sunday evening with the most cancellations and delays out of any other airport in the world.

travel daily windtre

The storm caused more than 150 canceled flights and 44% were delayed.

About a quarter of all flights landing in Dallas on Sunday were also delayed. About 14% of the incoming flights were canceled.

"I sat on the runway for two hours last night and then they brought us back to the gate because of weather and pilot timeout," said traveler Cherie Beaumont.

Beaumont was trying to get back to Oregon.

She was rebooked on a 7 a.m. American Airlines flight Monday, but it too was canceled.

I just try to go with the flow. It's a little harder after two canceled flights," Beaumont said.

She's far from alone.

Storms cause flight disruptions at DFW Airport

Last night's storms continue to cause headaches for travelers flying into and out of DFW Airport. FOX 4's Paige Ellenberger has the latest on cancellations and delays.

Fort Worth-based American Airlines had the most delays and cancelations of any other airline Sunday.

The carrier delayed 1,100 flights and canceled 7 percent of all its flights due to severe weather around parts of the country.

"My flight showed on time. The weather was good here, nice and sunny. By the time I came here, we had some crew issues with the crew not getting here in time. And then we had some thunderstorms and weather. And they kept postponing it and postponing it and then they canceled it," said Ashay Gharat, who was flying to Chicago.

More storms are moving through North Texas on Sunday. Here's our forecast.

Gahrat is from Dallas, so he was able to sleep at home and come back to DFW Monday morning for his rescheduled flight.

Some travelers found themselves scrambling to make other plans. Others just stayed overnight at the airport until the next flight left.

A worker told FOX 4 for the most part the crowds were calm and patient.

According to FlightAware.com , fewer than 30 flights have been canceled. That’s about 2% of the total flights leaving DFW.

But with more storms in the forecast, that could all change.

"I would say plan early. Especially if you have reports about weather when bad, just plan around it. You might end up staying near the airport or going back," Gharat said.

At Dallas Love Field, there was a massive line for Southwest Airlines passengers waiting to drop off their checked bags.

"We've been in line for about 40 minutes. I don't know why," said Wendy Goldenberg, who was flying with her family back to Kansas.

An airport supervisor told FOX 4 the backup was in large part due to re-booked flights from over the weekend, coupled with Monday's normal flight schedule.

Passengers we spoke to are trying to make the best of it.

"I was happy that we allowed two hours for travel so we're not that stressed about it, but it was pretty surprising," said Michele Voelkening. "Never seen it like this before."

China’s Golden Week Travel Signals a Revival. Plus, Why U.S. Travel Is Still Lagging

Peden Doma Bhutia , Skift

May 30th, 2024 at 12:42 AM EDT

China’s outbound travel is coming back, driven by favorable visa policies, increased airline capacity, and a growing interest in diverse global destinations. However, challenges remain, particularly in travel to the U.S.

Peden Doma Bhutia

In a rebound of international travel, over 1.5 million Chinese citizens embarked on outbound trips during the recent Golden Week holiday , marketing technology firm China Trading Desk told Skift.

This surge points to a significant revival in global travel following the easing of pandemic-related restrictions.

The relaxation of visa policies between China and several countries has played a crucial role in this uptick. During the Golden Week in late April and early May, the growth rate of inbound and outbound bookings outpaced domestic tourism, Trip.com Group told Skift.

Popular Destinations and Emerging Trends

According to data from Trip.com Group, Chinese tourists visited nearly 200 countries and over 3,000 towns worldwide during the Golden Week period.

Thailand emerged as the top destination, with over 215,000 Chinese tourists between April 27 and May 4, according to China Trading Desk’s data. Factors such as visa-free entry offer by Thailand, shorter flight durations, and cost-effectiveness compared to other destinations have driven this trend.

While strong, the numbers still haven’t reached pre-pandemic levels, said Subramania Bhatt, CEO of China Trading Desk.

travel daily windtre

The popularity of outbound travel is further evidenced by Ctrip’s report of a 190% year-on-year increase in the number of outbound tourists. Alibaba’s Fliggy also noted a near doubling in outbound travel bookings during the five-day holiday, with per capita spending on outbound travel surpassing 2019 levels significantly.

Alipay transactions reflect this increased spending, with a 77% rise in overseas markets during the initial days of Golden Week, particularly in destinations like Thailand and Malaysia.

Challenges in US-China Travel

Travel to the U.S. still faces hurdles , with flight capacity between the two countries around 25% of pre-Covid levels. During the 2019 Labor Day holiday, 70,000 travelers journeyed from China to the U.S., but most recently it was around 42,000.

Bhatt cited several reasons for this:

  • Limited Flight Availability: There’s a slower resumption of direct flights and connectivity between China and the US, impacting the ease of planning trips.
  • Visa Processing Delays: Longer visa processing times have been a deterrent, likely due to staffing issues and backlogs caused by the pandemic.
  • Geopolitical Tensions: Ongoing political tensions between China and the US may make some potential travelers hesitant.
  • Concerns Over Racial Treatment: There is apprehension about the treatment of Chinese individuals in the U.S., which can influence travel decisions.

travel daily windtre

Airline Capacity and Pricing Trends

Though limited, there has been a gradual restoration of airline service and that has helped. Fliggy said that the average price per person for international air tickets dropped by more than 10% compared to the previous year.

The preference for Asian destinations remains strong, with 9 out of the top 10 outbound destinations being in Asia. Bhatt attributed this to the ease of travel, increased flight availability, and visa-free access in many Southeast Asian countries, as well as Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macau.

Europe continues to attract Chinese tourists, with over 100,000 travelers heading to European countries excluding the UK during the holiday season, according to China Trading Desk’s data. Trip.com reported notable increases in travel to Spain, Turkey, Austria, Slovenia, Italy, and Georgia, with year-on-year growth exceeding 1.5 times.

Domestic capacity in May still accounts for 92% of all seats to, from and within China this month, with international making up the remaining 8%, according to aviation data firm OAG .

Shifts in Travel Preferences

There is a notable shift towards exploring less traditionally frequented destinations. Austria, Turkey, Morocco, and other less traditionally frequented destinations by Chinese tourists saw the fastest growth rates in bookings, indicating a shift towards exploring new and diverse destinations

Fliggy also reported that bookings for long-distance travel to places like Austria, Turkey, Morocco, Russia, Portugal, Georgia, Egypt, Spain, Kazakhstan, and Brazil quadrupled compared to the previous year.

Additionally, Trip.com group noted significant increases in travel to Middle Eastern destinations such as Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait, with numbers more than tripling year-on-year.

Saudi Arabia and Qatar are set to increase the number of direct flights connecting China and Hong Kong, capitalizing on the resurgence of Chinese tourists. Having welcomed 140,000 Chinese tourists last year, Saudi Arabia aims to attract 5 million Chinese visitors by 2030.

Travelers cope with crowds and high prices on the busiest day of Memorial Day weekend

Highways and airports are likely to be jammed the next few days as Americans head out for Memorial Day weekend getaways and then return home.

Highways and airports are likely to be jammed this weekend, as Americans head out on Memorial Day weekend getaways. AAA says this will be the busiest start-of-summer weekend in nearly 20 years.

Travelers contended with big crowds and flight delays Friday, which was expected to be the busiest day of the Memorial Day weekend.

More than 6,000 U.S. flights were delayed by early evening on the East Coast, continuing a trend that has tested the patience of travelers all week. Cancellations were more modest, at slightly more than 200, according to tracking data from FlightAware.

There were delays on the highways, too.

Along Florida’s Turnpike, Wallis Tinnie said a traffic accident and road work slowed her drive to an African American history commemoration in the Florida Panhandle, the site in 1816 of the first battle of the Seminole Wars.

“But we’re comfortable with it,” the Miami woman said during a stop at Port Saint Lucie. “We left early, and our event is tomorrow. So hopefully — God willing, creek don’t rise — we’ll be there in plenty of time.”

The Transportation Security Administration predicted that Friday would be the busiest day of the holiday weekend for air travel, with nearly 3 million people expected to pass through airport checkpoints . TSA screened just under 2.9 million people Thursday, coming within about 11,000 of breaking the record set on the Sunday after Thanksgiving last year.

“Airports are going to be more packed than we have seen in 20 years,” AAA spokesperson Aixa Diaz said.

Highways also are likely to be jammed as motorists head out of town and then return home. AAA predicted this will be the busiest start-of-summer weekend in nearly 20 years, with 43.8 million people expected to roam at least 50 miles from home between Thursday and Monday — 38 million of them taking vehicles.

The annual expression of wanderlust that accompanies the start of the summer travel season is happening at a time when Americans tell pollsters they are worried about the economy and the direction of the country.

“Memorial Day is a holiday weekend. I get to hang with family and friends, so I’d say that’s priceless, right?” Nene Efebo said during a two-hour wait for a delayed flight at Denver International Airport. “Anything to hang out with family and friends.”

Victoria Ramos Valdes of Miami was taking a driving vacation with her husband, Blake, and their children, ages 3 and 4 months old.

“We said, hey, we’re going to go for a $300 budget, and the hotel is around $150,” she said, but it has a water slide, providing plenty of entertainment. “We’re taking a nice family trip and doing our best to have the best Memorial Day weekend possible.”

Some travelers reported experiencing sticker shock when they booked their trips. Upon arriving at Philadelphia International Airport, Ciarra Marsh said the city “was not our original destination, but we chose here because it was cheaper.”

At Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, Larisa Latimer of New Lenox, Illinois, said her airfare was reasonable but other expenses for a getaway to New Orleans were not.

“I’m really conscious of looking at the cost of the entire trip. We’re staying a little farther out than we normally would” to get a lower hotel rate, she said. “We’re also flying back a day later, because we could get cheaper miles.”

The weekend’s highway traffic and crowded airports could be a sample of what is to come for several more weeks. U.S. airlines expect to carry a record number of passengers this summer. Their trade group estimates that 271 million travelers will fly between June 1 and August 31, breaking the record of 255 million set – you guessed it – last summer .

Cicada map 2024: Broods XIII and XIX emerge in Ohio vacationer hotspots

It's not necessarily a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but it doesn't happen often. It's typically more than a decade between times when periodical cicadas emerge in full force in many portions of the country.

They're out now in nearly 20 U.S. states across the Southeast and Midwest.

These 17 states, which range from Oklahoma to Wisconsin to North Carolina and more, are seeing the trillions of cicadas emerging this year in a rare, double brood event.

The two broods this year, the 13-year Brood XIX located mainly in the Southeast and the 17-year Brood XIII in the Midwest, have not emerged together in 221 years and are not expected to do so again until 2245.

Thanks to warm soil temperatures and ideal conditions, cicadas from both broods have already made their way above ground and the emergence is already in full swing.

Here's where you can find cicadas above ground this year.

What do cicadas eat? Lifecycle, diet and biting habits explained

2024 cicada map: Check out where Broods XIII, XIX are projected to emerge

The two cicada broods were projected to emerge in a combined 17 states across the South and Midwest. They emerge once the soil eight inches underground reaches 64 degrees, beginning in many states in April and May and lasting through late June.

The two broods  last emerged together in 1803 , when Thomas Jefferson was president.

Traveling from Ohio or Northern Kentucky this summer? You may see cicadas

Are you an Ohio or Kentucky resident traveling to places like middle Tennessee or western North Carolina? Well then, be on the lookout for cicadas.

Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, both less than 300 miles from Cincinnati and under 400 miles from Columbus, are Ohio vacationer hotspots where cicadas are above ground this spring.

If you're eyeing a Lake Michigan getaway, you're likely to share the beach with some 17-year cicadas.

New Buffalo in Southwest Michigan, which is less than 300 miles from Columbus and Cincinnati and slightly more than 300 miles from Akron, has cicadas.

Likewise for Indiana Dunes in Northern Indiana — also less than 300 miles from Columbus and Cincinnati and a little over 300 miles from Akron. Northern Illinois, including the Chicago area, are also expected to experience 17-year cicadas this year.

Where are the cicadas in 2024? App developed in Cincinnati tracks sightings

Adult periodical cicadas from Brood XIX are out in full force in states across the Midwest and Southeast, according to  Cicada Safari , a cicada tracking app developed by Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, Ohio.

App users have spotted them in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, southern Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

Brood XIII has emerged in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Indiana. The Chicago area and around central and northern Illinois and downstate areas around the cities of Peoria and Champaign are experiencing cicada mania, according to the tracking service.

Does Ohio have cicadas?

Ohio is  not  in the path of the two broods appearing across much of the Southeast and Midwest, according to the University of Connecticut. However, you might still spot either brood this spring as "some stragglers may pop up in the southwest of the state," according to Ohio State University's  Buckeye Environmental Horticulture Team .

Parts of southern and southwest Ohio will see the emergence of Brood XIV cicadas in 2025, per OSU's Buckeye Environmental Horticulture Team.

Confusingly, Brood XIII emerges every 17 years while Brook XIX resurfaces every 13 years, according to the  University of Illinois .

Will cicadas emerging this year fly to Ohio?

Ohio is not expected to see an onslaught of periodical cicadas from either Brood XIX or XIII, but some neighboring states will.

So will the cicadas be able to fly to Ohio? That's unlikely for two reasons.

First, cicadas are clumsy flyers, and their wings are not suitable for long distance travel, according to  Science News Explores .

Plus, periodical cicadas emerge only to molt, breed, lay eggs and die, all within a few weeks. They don't spend time looking for new territory. Cicadas typically fly less than half a mile from the spot where they emerge, according to the University of Illinois. So, 17-year cicadas from Abraham Lincoln's day have spread roughly five miles total.

What is a brood?

According to the  University of Connecticut , broods are classified as "all periodical cicadas of the same life cycle type that emerge in a given year."

A brood of cicadas is made up of different species of the insect that have separate evolutionary histories. These species may have joined the brood at different times or from different sources. These distinct species are lumped together under the brood because they are in the same region and emerge on a common schedule.

How long will the cicadas be above ground?

How long cicadas live depends on their brood and if they are an annual or periodical species.

The two periodical broods this summer are Brood XIX, which has a 13-year life cycle, and Brood XIII, which has a 17-year life cycle.

Once male and female periodical cicadas have mated and the latter has laid its eggs, the insects will die after spending only a few weeks above ground − anywhere from three to six weeks after first emerging.

That means many of this year's periodical cicadas are set to die in June, though some could die off in late May or July, depending on when they emerged.

The nymphs of annual cicadas remain underground for  two to five years , according to the Missouri Department of Conservation. These cicadas are called " annual " because some members of the species emerge as adults each year.

Why do cicadas make so much noise?

You'll have to thank the male cicadas for all that screeching. Male cicadas synchronize their calls and produce congregational songs, according to  Britannica , which establish territory and attract females. There is also a courting call before mating.

The periodical 13-year and 17-year brood cicadas are the loudest, partially because of the sheer number of them that emerge at once.

Person killed in KLM airplane engine at Amsterdam airport just before departure

travel daily windtre

A person died at an Amsterdam airport after "ending up" in the engine of a departing airplane.

The victim was killed in the spinning turbine blades of a KLM passenger plane at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport , Dutch flagship carrier KLM said in a statement on Wednesday. The flight, KL1341, was headed to Billund, Denmark.

"Sadly, this person has died," KLM said. The air carrier has not disclosed the identity of the victim or whether they were a passenger. USA TODAY has reached out for further information.

The airline evacuated the passengers and employees who witnessed the death, KLM added. The Royal Military Police are conducting an investigation into the cause.

Plane was a short-haul Embraer jet

The aircraft involved was a short-haul Embraer jet used for KLM's Cityhopper service, taking passengers to nearby major cities, according to Dutch public broadcaster Nederlandse Omroep Stichting (NOS).

The aircraft was made by Brazilian manufacturer Embraer and can accommodate 88 to 132 passengers, NOS reported. A photo shared by NOS shows the plane surrounded by fire trucks and ambulances near a departure terminal.

The death occurred Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, where Nicki Minaj was reportedly arrested on Saturday after an exchange with an officer before being released later.

Other passenger jet engine deaths have occurred in recent years, including in January when a 30-year-old man climbed into a plane engine at Salt Lake City International Airport .

Last June, a San Antonio International Airport employee died after being "ingested" into an engine. And in December 2022 an airline worker died after being " sucked into the engine " of a plane at Montgomery Regional Airport in Alabama.
