Boston wins big at 2024 DCI Tour kickoff

by Jeff Griffith

ROCKFORD, Michigan — Wednesday’s DCI Midwest Premiere presented by Fruhauf Uniforms, Inc. served as a resounding kickoff to the 2024 Drum Corps International Tour.

At the Rockford, Michigan, event, Boston Crusaders earned a substantial margin of victory atop a lineup of five World Class competitors — all of which earned finalist positions at the conclusion of 2023. Northern Lights represented the Great Lake State in the SoundSport division as the night’s leadoff act, finishing with a Silver rating.

View all results and the scoring recap from the DCI Midwest Premiere

Here’s a breakdown of the opening night competitive results:

1. Boston Crusaders » 73.000

With its debut performance of “Glitch,” Boston Crusaders opened up a significant lead on the field of competing corps, and earned a sweep of all captions, aside from a second-place ranking in the “content” portion of the percussion caption.

The Massachusetts corps outscored second-place Phantom Regiment by just under three points, which is comparable to the gap of 2.85 that separated the two corps at their first meeting a year ago.

Imperfection is the art of Boston’s 2024, “Glitch”

As for Boston Crusaders’ individual quantifiers, the corps’ debut score in 2024 checks in a few points shy of its 2023 opening number, 77.150, but that came a bit later on the tour schedule, on July 1.

2. Phantom Regiment » 70.150

Phantom Regiment took home second place in all captions other than percussion Wednesday night; the Rockford, Illinois corps came closest to outscoring Boston Crusaders in general effect, with the two separated by 0.8 points.

While Regiment's opening score broke 70 points for the second-consecutive season, it checked in a bit lower than last year’s debut tally of 71.300, earned at the same event.

3. The Cavaliers » 68.250

The Cavaliers’ caption scoring breakdown was arguably the most volatile of the night, with subcaption scores ranging from second to fifth place.

Introspective “Beneath the Armor” to usher in new era of The Cavaliers

In the big picture sense, the corps’ gap of 1.9 points behind Phantom Regiment was a bit smaller than it was at the outset of 2023; the two were split by 2.45 points when they first met head-to-head last summer.

Fresh off taking home 2023’s Fred Sanford Best Percussion Performance caption award, The Cavaliers posted strong percussion scores, finishing 0.3 points behind Boston Crusaders while outscoring the night’s overall winner in percussion content.

While one general effect judge had The Cavaliers in last place out of the five competing corps, the Green Machine still took third in the caption overall, to go with another third-place finish in overall visual, and second in overall music.

4. Blue Stars » 66.650

Blue Stars’ scoring output was one of the night’s more notable competitive storylines. After finishing two placements behind Colts at the end of 2023, the Wisconsin corps jumped ahead of its Iowa opponent to open the new season, by a margin of 1.25 points.

Look at the stars 🤩🤩 Posted by Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps on  Wednesday, June 26, 2024

Blue Stars finished fourth in all overall captions, while scoring fifth in visual proficiency, and taking third place in color guard and third from one of two general effect judges.

5. Colts » 65.400

Fresh off of back-to-back appearances at the DCI World Championship Finals — and an all-time best final score and placement last season — Colts opened up the 2024 season with a comparable opening mark to 2023.

Colts will traverse through changing landscapes with “On Fields”

The Dubuque, Iowa corps kicked off last season’s tour with a score of 65.300, just one tenth below its 2024 debut number. While Colts landed behind the Blue Stars, the opening-night gap between the two was significantly smaller than last year’s margin of 4.6 points.

All five World Class corps from Wednesday’s event will appear, joined by Carolina Crown, Friday in Muncie, Indiana . Northern Lights’ next DCI Tour appearance is slated for the SoundSport International Music & Food Festival presented by Jazz Wealth, August 10 in Indianapolis .

By Neal Riley

June 25, 2024 / 10:37 AM EDT / CBS Boston

BOSTON - Post Malone is bringing his concert tour to Fenway Park in Boston later this summer.

The Grammy-nominated artist is playing 21 shows to mark the release of his first country album "F-1 Trillion." His Fenway concert is scheduled for Sept. 18.

Post Malone concert tickets

Tickets will start to become available on Wednesday with a Citi Presale. They go on sale to the general public on Monday at 10 a.m.

There's no word yet if Post Malone will be joined by another other opening or guest artists for the performance.

Post Malone's first single "I Had Some Help" from his new album went to the top of the country charts. He also teamed up with Taylor Swift earlier this year on her new single "Fortnight."

Fenway Park summer concert series

Fenway is welcoming a host of big names this year. The summer concert series kicked off last Thursday with a rain-shortened Lana Del Rey show , followed by a Hootie & The Blowfish concert.

The next concerts at the iconic ballpark will be played by Watertown resident and New England native Noah Kahan on July 18 and July 19. He'll be followed by Kane Brown on July 20, Foo Fighters on July 21 and blink-182 on July 23.

In August Def Leppard and Journey will play Fenway on Aug. 5 and Green Day will perform Aug. 17. The only other shows scheduled in September besides Post Malone are Pearl Jam on Sept. 15 and Sept. 17.

Neal J. Riley is a digital producer for CBS Boston. He has been with WBZ-TV since 2014. His work has appeared in The Boston Globe and The San Francisco Chronicle. Neal is a graduate of Boston University.

New single “ strawberry jam ” out now.

COIN have announced their new album I’m Not Afraid of Music Anymore will be out September 13 via 10k Projects. The band’s debut single “ Strawberry Jam ” produced by Gabe Simon (Dua Lipa, Noah Kahan Lana Del Rey) is also out now. Along with the announcement of this new chapter for COIN, they will be kicking off a North American Tour playing notable venues such as the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles , Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC , MGM Music Hall at Fenway in Boston , Fox Theater in Oakland and many more. Get your tickets HERE and see all of the dates below.

– “STRAWBERRY JAM” –

The new album finds the band in their most vulnerable state and continuing to push the boundaries of alternative pop without straying from their trademark dynamic energy. It’s bright, bittersweet, electric, intimate and a record fans new and old can embrace open heartedly. After thinking they were out of stories to tell, songs to shape, I’m Not Afraid of Music Anymore suggests that COIN have unlocked not a new chapter in their existence but an entire new volume, with more depth than they’ve ever shared before.

Cameron Young posts 59 at Travelers Championship for first sub-60 round on PGA Tour in 4 years

CROMWELL, Conn. (AP) — Cameron Young made a par putt from just inside 10 feet for an 11-under 59 on Saturday in the Travelers Championship, the first sub-60 round on the PGA Tour in nearly four years.

Young made two eagles on par 4s, holing out with wedge from 142 yards on the third hole and driving the 280-yard 15th hole within 4 feet.

It was the 13th sub-60 round since Al Geiberger first shot golf’s “magic number” at the 1977 Memphis Classic. Scottie Scheffler had been the most recent at the TPC Boston in 2020 at The Northern Trust.

“I can’t say I was expecting it,” Young said. “I’ve been playing better than the results have shown. Waking up this morning, I wasn’t really thinking I’m going to be 5 under through four. It was a lot of fun to do.”

This didn’t even get Young the distinction of owning the course record at the TPC River Highlands. Jim Furyk shot a 58 in 2016 at the Travelers Championship, the lowest round in PGA Tour history.

Young still moved from a tie for 43rd to a tie for 10th, five shots out of the lead.

Jordan Spieth became a footnote in history as the only PGA Tour player to twice play with someone who shot 59. Spieth also was in the group with Justin Thomas when he shot 59 in the opening round of the 2017 Sony Open.

Young was able to lift, clean and place his golf ball in the short grass because of soggy course conditions and the potential of more rain.

He could have gone even lower. After his eagle on the 15th hole, Young hit his tee shot to 7 feet on the par-3 16th and missed the short birdie putt. On the closing hole, needing birdie to tie Furyk’s record, his drive settled on the steep face of a fairway bunker and Young was unable to get it on the green.

He still made par for the seventh round of 59 or lower this year on tours around the world.

“To have a day like today where things start going in, and it feels like you’re reward for good shots, it leaves me with a good taste in my mouth,” Young said.

He finished at 13-under par and was tied with Tom Kim, who was watching some of Young’s round on a video screen at the practice range as Kim was getting ready for the start of his third round. Kim shot a 65 and led by one over Scottie Scheffler and Akshay Bhatia.

The other six rounds at 59 or lower this year include Joaquin Niemann on LIV Golf and a record-tying 57 by Cristobal del Solar on the Korn Ferry Tour in Bogota, Colombia.
