Ethiopia is a land of mystery and adventure, where ancient civilizations and spectacular natural beauty collide to form a memorable experience. Ethiopia is a place of extremes, from the towering heights of the Simien Mountains to the blistering heat of the Danakil Depression; believe it or not, even the most seasoned tourist will be challenged and captivated by the beauty and magic of Ethiopia. Trek through the lush jungles of the Bale Mountains in search of rare and unusual wildlife, or explore Lalibela’s rock-hewn churches, which tradition says were sculpted by angels.

Explore Addis Abeba’s colorful marketplaces and interact with the locals in a unique way, eat the spicy cuisine, and immerse yourself in the intriguing country’s rich culture and history. Ethiopia is certainly a magical place that entices people like you, whether you seek adventure or simply want to get away from the ordinary.

Did you know that Ethiopia is one of the few African countries that has never been formally colonized by a European power? That is correct. The country faced several attempts by European countries who wanted to conquer yet another African land and establish control over it.

Throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Ethiopians fought valiantly to maintain their nation’s independence and sovereignty. Inspiring.

Because the absence of a colonial power may be the reason why Ethiopia has its own timing and 13 months in the year, Don’t you think so? Bizarre! The uniqueness of the country makes it so much easier to navigate and we will make it even easier by giving you the 6 best tours to explore Ethiopia with ease.

There are countless things you can do in this ever-sovereign nation. Try visiting one of the magnificent national parks of Ethiopia and you will be amazed. For example, Nechisar National Park is a park in the Great Rift Valley known for its stunning landscapes and wildlife, which includes elephants, zebras, and various antelope species.

Visiting this national park will be a rare opportunity to sight these animals that we have only watched on TV or drawn on paper while in kindergarten.

Or if hiking is your way to go, you will have plenty of opportunities to explore the stunning landscape of this magical country. The Simien Mountains and the Bale Mountains will give you awe-inspiring moments on a scenic hike. So when you are packing for your trip to Ethiopia, do not forget your hiking boots because they will come in very handy.

You will agree with us that hiking is best when you go in groups. This is one of the reasons why joining a group tour will make a lot of sense. Group tours will make your hiking experience a lot more enticing and joyful as you get along with your fellow travelers who equally want to explore the magic of Ethiopia. You can share rare travel moments that will last a lifetime and that alone is enough to join a group tour.

The Omo Valley in Southern Ethiopia is a less-visited part of Ethiopia that is home to some of the most colorful tribes and ethnic groupings. The intriguing clothing, colorful ceremonies and festivities, arts, crafts, music, and dancing.

Many tribal tribes in the Omo Valley region have altered little over hundreds of years and provide visitors with unparalleled insight into a range of traditional civilizations. This journey takes you off the main path by experiencing the Southern remote villages and colorful tribal markets.

5 Epic Adventure Activities in Ethiopia

1. hiking in the simien mountains.

Often referred to as the Roof of Africa, the Simien Mountains have some of the country's most impressive hiking routes.

The proliferation of indigenous wildlife, including the famous Gelada Monkeys and rare Walia Ibex , not to mention the variety of unique flowers, trees and plants, make hiking in this part of the country an absolute joy.

The first national park in the country, formed in 1969, the Simiens sit firmly along the northern circuit of Ethiopia , and are often the focal point of many itineraries.

Trekking in the Simien Mountains is one of the most popular adventures in Ethiopia, with routes ranging from day hikes to multi-week expeditions.

2. Exploring Danakil Depression

Known as the gateway to hell, the Danakil Depression is one of the most unique environments in the world.

Sitting over 400 feet below sea level, it is both one of the lowest lying and hottest places on earth , with average temperatures reaching as high as 50°C. Aside for the hardy Afar people who inhabit this seemingly inhospitable desert, only 3 types of people flock to this region: salt miners, scientists and adventurers.

The sulphur springs of Dallol  are one of the biggest attractions in the area, with its psychedelic-tinged shades of neon green morphing into vibrant yellows and reds and acid spraying from the rocky terrain. Ethiopia’s most active volcano, Erta Ale (which means “Smoking Mountain” in the local Afar language) is one of only eight lava lakes in the world.

3. Fly Camping in the Omo Valley

Sleep under the stars, and spend your days trekking through the unending expanse. Spend time with the various tribes of the Omo Valley , and immerse yourself in centuries of culture and history. Eight different tribes live in this remote pocket of Ethiopia , with combined population numbers around 200,000. They live here now as they have done for over 10,000 years.

Fly camping in the heart of the Omo Valley , on the banks of the Omo River, is Ethiopia's answer to glamping . Sleep under the stars, in gazebo-type tents, with a shared area that includes a dining area and seating.

Lale's Camp is the flagship camp in the Omo Valley, and offers exclusive access into the country's most remote regions.

4. Rock Climbing in Tigray

The towering Gheralta Mountains , and the rock churches found within, were for centuries only visited by the most stoically loyal practitioners, with their lofty location making them easily defensible, but barely reachable.

Over the years the rock-hewn temples were hidden behind small shack-like doors, far from prying eyes. Today however, this stunning landscape has become a popular spot for the adventure traveller.

Quite a different experience than the rock churches in Lalibela , these churches require scaling a sheer cliff face, following the centuries-old handholds carved out by pilgrims, centuries ago.

Abuna Yemata Guh is the most famous church in the Tigray region, but there are many others that wait to be explored.

5. Helicopter Safaris in Gambella

In the rugged, wild west of Ethiopia lies Gambella National Park . An untamed wilderness where few dare to travel, but those do can spend their nights under the stars in a remote camp - with the sound of buffalo stomping in the distance - miles and miles from anywhere.

Access to this remote region is only possible via helicopter, and only few operators are able to run trips here. We work closely with those that can, and a trip like this is the definition of a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

The two monasteries have Ethiopian Orthodox Church architectural features, such as their circular architecture, mud walls, and conical straw roofs.

There are Columbus Baboons and several bird species living in Zeghie’s forest.

Hotel Stay for the Night.

5-Day Northern Ethiopia Tour - Historical Wonders & Natural Beauty

We travel the final 185 kilometers through the breathtaking Amhara region to Gondar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Many Ethiopian emperors resided in Gondar during the 17th and 18th century.

The village is the gateway to the Simien Mountains.

The well-known castles in the town will be shown to us; these were built as numerous mansions for the kings’ families by their predecessors.

After lunch we’ll take a tour of the town’s well-known castles, where past kings built numerous mansions for themselves and their families.

We will next go to the location of the annual Timkat Fest, King Fasilidas’ bath. Timkat is an annual celebration of Jesus Christ’s baptism that is one of Ethiopia’s most well-known holidays.

To cap the day, we go to the DebreBerhan Selassie church, which is well known for its beautiful ceiling paintings.

Eventually, Ethiopian art was associated with the angelic face motif.

4-Day Wildlife Safari in the Simien Mountains - Nature's Splendor

After breakfast, take a car trip to the UNESCO-designated Simien Mountains .

The route between Gondar and Debark offers plenty of picturesque driving opportunities.

Many endemic birds, such as the Wattled Ibis and Thick-billed Raven, as well as the critically endangered Ethiopian Gelada Baboon, can be found in the Simien Mountains.

Apart from its breathtaking scenery and plethora of wildlife, the park is highly recognized for its Afro-montane forest, Hypericum woodland, Afro-montane grassland, and Afro-alpine moorland, which is dominated by giant lobelias.

We will go on a short hike through the beautiful Simien Mountains in order to find the endemic Gelada Baboons.

Gelada Baboons, sometimes called “lion-monkeys” or “bleeding heart baboons,” are indigenous to Ethiopia and can still be found in great numbers in the Simien Mountains for reasons that will soon become evident to all.

Spend the night in Gondar after returning there.

Stay the night at the hotel.

Start the day by exploring the other sections of the magnificent Simien Mountains National Park.

Their deep valleys and sharp peaks make these mountains a sight to behold.

We shall now proceed to Chenek Camp, the residence of the Ethiopian Wolf and the Walia Ibex.

Spend the night in Gondar and retrace your steps.

Have a hotel stay for the night.

10-Day Northern Ethiopia Exploration - History, Culture, and Nature

After breakfast in the morning, travel through the picturesque Northern region to the UNESCO World Heritage Site at Lalibela .

Because of its eight globally recognized rock-hewn churches, which are literally praised from the rock in which they stand, Lalibela is frequently referred to as “The New Jerusalem”.

Both in scale and concept, these monumental constructions seem to have been created by superhuman craftsmanship.

If time allows, start touring the remarkable king Lalibela’s hewn churches.

See the churches at Bet Abba Libanos, Bet Merkorios, Bet Amanual, and Bet Gabriel-Rufael in the southeast.

Go to the hotel for the night.

Detailed 18-Day Ethiopia Tour Itinerary

In the morning, following breakfast, visit churches that have been carved out of the rocks they stand on.

Based on their size and concept, these monumental constructions seem to be the result of exceptional craftsmanship.

As soon as you arrive, check into your hotel.

Begin your discovery of the remarkable rock-hewn cathedrals of King Lalibela by visiting the churches in the Northwestern Cluster: Bet Danaghel, Bet Golgotha, Bet Mikael, Bet Maryam, Bet MedhaneAlem, & Bet Meskel.

Finally, see the most famous of all the churches, Bet Giyorgis.

Built to honor St. George, Ethiopia’s patron saint, this massive monolithic cross was created.

You will next be driven to the airport in order to catch your flight to Addis.

Spend the night in a hotel.

Upon your arrival at Semera Airport, you will be met by your guide and taken to Erta’ale after being briefed about the program and general geology of Ethiopia.

Before moving on to Dallol, we’ll make a lunch stop in Afdera town.

Traveling through the desert is primarily done off-road.

After a long journey to other towns, the salt caravans assemble in Ahmedela, a small settlement that we will reach in the evening.

The Assale Salt Lake, which is relatively shallow, provides stunning sunset views, and you will be able to see many camel caravans.

Outside Camping for the Night.

Detailed 4-Day Danakil Depression & Erta'ale Volcano Itinerary

Before we eat breakfast, we make our way to Dallol, a place known for its vibrant geothermal pools and salt domes.

Dallol is a strange place with unique geysers, sulfur pools, and colorful mineral deposits.

We’ll have the morning to explore this strange place.

Additionally, we will make a stop at the unusual salt canyons before continuing towards the volcano.

Somewhere along the route, we may be able to see the tedious process of manually extracting salt and loading it onto camels.

A salt layer covering approximately 1,200 km2 covers the Danakil Depression.

Once we reach basalt rock, which was formerly formed by lava flows, we continue on through the desert. It’s a slow, bumpy drive that finally ends at the base of the Erta Ale volcano.

We will walk for thirty minutes to reach the Erta Ale Summit Crater from our camp after enjoying a leisurely, light dinner, when we arrive.

While there isn’t much of a gradient, it is important that everyone stays together and carries a flashlight.

Enough distance separated us from the lava for safety as we set up camp on the crater rim!

Camping outside all night long.

We start our climb back to the cars after a beautiful sunrise over the lava lake, from whence we will continue our journey to Lake Afdera.

Beyond seeing the traditional ways that salt is mined in the region, we can relax in the natural hot springs following our hike.

There are naturally occurring hot springs close to Lake Afdera where you can take a bath.

Drive yourself to Semera so you can return to Addis by plane.

Fly to the southern region of Ethiopia, Arbaminch.

It is well known that the Southern region is home to a wide variety of peoples and cultures.

After you meet your driver upon arrival at Arbaminch, proceed to your lodging.

Later that afternoon, take a quick drive to see the Dorze Tribe who live atop Guge Mountain.

The Dorze people are well-known for their cotton-weaving skills and their beehive-shaped houses constructed entirely of organic materials.

Come to their village to learn more about their way of life, marvel at their incredible skill at weaving cotton, and see their characteristic beehive huts.

After midnight: Arbaminch.

See the tribes of the Omo Valley by taking a morning drive to Turmi, a small town, following breakfast.

Stop and explore the village of Konso while en route.

The wooden totems honoring the deceased and the Konso tribe’s agricultural terracing technique are well-known.

Because of their significant cultural value, the Konso villages are listed as a world heritage site.

Comprising distinct compounds, the villages are encircled by towering stone walls.

Follow the acacia forest southward to Turmi after lunch.

In the vicinity of Turmi, visit the village of the renowned Hammer tribe.

In addition to their exquisite pottery, they are well known for their amazing hairstyle.

Wearing intricate necklaces, vibrant goatskins beaded in various colors, and metal bracelets around their wrists and ankles, the women look amazing.

A woman’s husband’s status and wealth are disclosed by these ornaments.

Hotel for the night.

Detailed 18-Day Ethiopia Tour Itinerary

See the Dassenech tribe by traveling 75 km on a paved road towards Omorate in the morning.

On the bank of the Omo River, Omorate is situated close to the Kenyan border.

Arriving at a Dassenech village, you will take a local boat across the Omo River and walk there.

The Dassenech people reside along the banks of the Omo River and are a semi-nomadic tribe.

Across southern Ethiopia, Kenya, and Sudan , their clans are distributed.

They are known for their intricate and eye-catching hair buns.

They fish and grow crops.

Next, make your way back to Turmi for lunch.

After lunch drive to the Kara Tribe, who live on the banks of the Omo River.

The Kara regularly paint their faces and bodies, making them masters at the art.

Before they perform their rituals and dances, they painstakingly paint their faces, bodies, and the faces of their friends using different colors of soil, minerals, plan pigments, flowers, and black charcoal.

Men have spent days getting ready for this occasion, and most of them are dressed elegantly in red clay hair buns.

Proceed to Jinka after breakfast, stopping along the way to visit a vibrant market where we can observe some of the Omo Valley tribes gathered in one area.

Visit the village of the Ari People before traveling to Jinka.

Set in the verdant environs of the Jinka, the Ari people grow fruits and coffee for trade and their own consumption.

It is the most beautiful place in the nation, with verdant communities encircled by avocado, mango, and banana trees.

Overnight Hotel.

Detailed 12-Day Surma and Omo Valley Tour Itinerary

Explore the expansive wilderness of Mago National Park on a morning drive.

Encompassing open Savannah areas and dense acacia forests, this national park was established in 1960 and is home to nearly 100 species of mammals and 300 species of birds.

See a Mursi village where people live.

It is well known that the women inserted clay plates into their lower lips.

Head to Jinka’s ethnographic museum, which focuses on the languages of the South Omotic tribes.

Jinka, a thriving hub of commerce, acts as a sort of capital for the numerous ethnic groups that call this region home.

Stay the night at a hotel.

Immediately after breakfast, take a boat ride on Lake Chamo to witness some enormous crocodiles, hippos, and aquatic birds. Next, travel via the lush Wolayta and Sidama regions to reach Awassa.

Move to a hotel for the night after arriving in Awassa.

6-Day Trekking Expedition in Ethiopia's Bale Mountains

Drive in the morning to the Bale Mountains National Park in the southeast of the nation.

Mammal species unique to Ethiopia’s southeast mountain range will be visible as we approach the park’s boundary.

The magnificent endemics of the Mountain Nyala and Menelik’s Bushbuck are the reason behind the exceptional beauty of the Bale Mountains National Park.

On the gassay grasslands, we will look for Serval Cats and caracals.

After breakfast you’re going to the Sanetti Plateau.

With the rising of the sun, the Ethiopian wolf-the canid that is most endangered in the world-begins its hunt.

The winding road at its top, one of Africa’s highest all-weather routes, provides excellent viewing opportunities.

Ethiopia’s plateau offers the best views of this elegant animal.

The largest rodent on the plateau is the giant molerat, which is confined to the Bale Mountains.

There are many other rodents here as well.

On your journey, you will stop at Tulu Dimtu, also called the “Red Mountain.” 4,377 meters is the height of the park’s highest mountain.

In the afternoon, take a drive to Harenna Forest, the country’s second-largest tropical rain-forest.

Our accommodation is situated further downhill from the small village of Rira, which is situated at the base of the escarpment.

Explore the forest on foot. Walk up to two almost stacked waterfalls and a bamboo-lined canyon.

Look out for other mammals, including the elusive Bale monkey, the Warthog, the Tree Hyrax, and the black-and-white Colobus monkey.

After returning the vehicle, spend the night in Robe.

Overnight hotel

Addis Ababa Day Tour Highlights

Following an early breakfast, drive out of Bale Mountains National Park and back to Addis via the Asela Road.

We’ll make a quick stop at the Arsi Mountains National Park to see the Greater Kudus before continuing on our journey to Addis .

We eat our last dinner at a traditional Ethiopian restaurant in the evening after arriving in Addis, where dancers and musicians from various ethnic groups perform.

Proceed to the airport to board your flight for your international destination after that.

Dont take our word for it...

Our Journey through Ethiopia excelled all expectations. Sam's knowledge of the country, history, culture and language, gave our experience a depth we have rarely experienced in years of world travel. Our memories of Ethiopia and the wonderful people we met and travelled with, will always be with us. Mr A & Mrs M, C. Waiheke Island, NZ. March 2019.
My recent trip to Ethiopia was incredible. I learned so much about its political and religious history and its land use. I came away with so much new information and an understanding of the problems economically emerging countries face. It’s a beautiful country filled with wonderful people. Sam and his Ethiopian partner Haile were perfect tour guides, nothing worried them, and their love and knowledge of Ethiopia was inspiring. I would happily recommend this tour company and I would be more than happy to do another tour with them. Ms CR. Christchurch, NZ. March 2019.
We really do think you are great and your tour organising was fantastic.   Mr TW, New Plymouth, NZ. February 2019.
Fifty years ago, Ted and I lived in Ethiopia for three years working for the US peace corps. We dreamed of someday returning. When we saw Sam’s advert in The Listener we thought maybe we could go. However, we didn’t just want to visit the tourist attractions we wanted to return to the remote area where we had lived before. Incredibly, Sam was able to arrange it all. From the moment we were met at the airport by Sam and Haile we were well taken care of. We relaxed and enjoyed the well planned and informative trip to the various historic areas as well as visiting the towns and people we had known all those years ago! It was truly the trip of a lifetime.   – Mrs HW, New Plymouth, NZ. February 2019.
I do a lot of travelling and have taken quite a number of tours. I can honestly say that I have never experienced such a kind, thoughtful and knowledgeable guide as Sam provided in my Ethiopian travel tour" – Penny C. 2016
This was the trip of a life time. It completely surpassed all of my expectations. Thank you so much Sam, you went out of your way to enable us to see the deep layers of Ethiopia " - CP. Apr 2016

Our  Advantages

Personal service & expertise.

Our office is manned by experienced tour leaders and travel consultants and every trip we run stems from their first-hand knowledge. In short, we run the kind of holidays that we, as passionate travellers, like to do ourselves. When you ring our office, you will be guaranteed to chat to someone who knows the region and the terrain and is able to offer sound and practical advice. When creating bespoke, tailor-made itineraries our specialist travel consultants will take you though each step of the process, advising you on everything from the most interesting accommodation to advice on tipping.

SMALL GROUP TOUR SIZES

On our escorted tours, we believe it is imperative to keep the group sizes small. While our average group size is 10 and most of our trips have a maximum group size of 12. Thus giving you more access to fragile cultures, better opportunities to interact with local people and the knowledge you are making less of an impact whilst there. Please refer to individual itineraries for details.

BE THE FIRST

Our style of travel is all about exploration and nothing excites us more than opening up new routes to genuine travellers. We keep abreast of new destinations and are often the first to return to places that have vanished from the tourist map.

OUR PRICING

We believe in an honest, upfront pricing structure so you know exactly what the tour will cost before you book. On our group tours we avoid local payments, ‘optional extras’ or forcing our clients to go through the annoying procedure of splitting every meal bill. Our tours are provided on a predominantly full board basis, with government permits, entrance fees and transport all included.

RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL

For us Responsible Travel coincides with Responsible Business, designing adventures with the local people, culture and eco-system in mind. We are very aware of the economic, ecological and ethical impact tourism can have on ancient cultures and fragile environments. We realise that taking clients through these regions can have a detrimental impact if not handled responsibly and as such, on all of our tours we go to great lengths to minimise the negative and accentuate the positive – after all, there are also many good things that the traveller can bring!
