Review: hahnemuhle travel journal and travel booklets.

I forget exactly how I stumbled across the Hahnemuhle Travel Journal, but this is the website where I first remember seeing it, and the photo that got me all excited: Heaton Cooper Studio

[UPDATED: the original photo is no longer on that website, but I think the image below was it.]

hahnemuhle travel journals

Nice plain black covers, a somewhat chunky shape, and no yucky cover overhang! I had to have one. I went searching around to see where else they might be sold, and there didn’t seem to be too many options. Those I did find were all in the UK. The best price I ended up finding was at The Pastel Shop , about £6.02 for a 9x14cm hardcover journal. I also bought a two-pack of softcover journals for £2.78. I waited anxiously for the notebooks to arrive– it ended up taking almost a month due to a software error in processing my order, but they finally arrived, just in time for me to take the hardcover journal with me on a trip to the Galapagos. (You’ll notice that it looks a lot more beaten-up in all the photos except the first few where it has its wrapper still on! I don’t usually manage to field-test notebooks so thoroughly before reviewing them!)

hahnemuhle21

I was not disappointed when I first unwrapped the sketchbook. It was just as lovely as it looked in the photo– thicker than a Moleskine, and with a slightly different texture to the black cover, but very minimal cover overhang. The spine had a funny wrinkly-ness to it, but the binding was sturdy and supple and opened totally flat. The interior was without any branding. The exterior just had a cute little rooster logo on the back. The elastic closure was just the right tightness and the ribbon marker was the right length. The inside pocket was a bit smaller than usual, and there was a slight mis-alignment between the book block and the cover, but nothing I couldn’t live with. In short, it was almost perfect.

The paper inside seemed just like the paper in the Handbook Artist Journals. That is basically what this notebook is, a HandBook Journal interior with a Moleskine exterior. Since these are the two notebooks that have long been my favorites, you would think I’d have died and gone to heaven finding the Hahnemuhle. I almost did.

So why the almost? Well, first of all what I really want to find is a replacement for my favorite Moleskines, the squared and sketchbook versions. If I want toothy sketch paper, I already have my HandBook Journals, which are totally satisfying just as they are (knock on wood, lest they start cutting corners like Moleskine has). If Hahnemuhle offered options with squared paper and a smooth heavy-weight sketch paper, I’d probably buy a hundred of them tomorrow. But I was still glad to have another option with the kind of paper I use for pencil drawing and watercolors a lot.

So it was disappointing to actually test the paper. There was just something about it that was not quite what I was hoping for. My watercolors seemed to look greyish and muddy, just somehow a bit dingy. Other pens and pencils work fine, or about as you’d expect with a paper of this texture. It’s pretty good on showthrough and bleed-through but not perfect. Fountain pens feather out a bit.

hahnemuhle18

It’s not that different from the HandBook paper, but there is something very subtle that makes it not quite as pleasing. Neither Hahnemuhle or HandBook makes any claim that their notebooks are appropriate for watercolors– both of them can only take light usage of watercolors and even wet markers. But I think the paper in the Hahnemuhle has a slightly cooler tone to it. When I look at my watercolor tests side by side, it seems very subtle, and sometimes I even wonder if I’m imagining it, but I do remember just feeling disappointed when I tried my watercolors, and they do seem duller than they do in some of my other HandBook journals. Despite all that, I used the Hahnemuhle very happily all through the Galapagos and had no complaints when  using it for pencil sketches. And one advantage it does have over the HandBook is that that wrinkly spine allows it to open much flatter– the HandBook’s rounded spine sticks out rather stiffly, while Hahnemuhle’s tucks itself right in.

Below are Hahnemuhle vs. HandBook comparison shots:

hahnemuhle14

And here’s Hahnemuhle vs. Moleskine:

hahnemuhle10

I hadn’t tested the little Travel Booklets til writing this review. They’re a great idea– I always wondered why Moleskine didn’t offer a sketch Cahier (though they’ve now introduced something along those lines) and that is basically what these are. One signature of sketch pages, sewn up the spine. 20 sheets of 140 GSM paper, so it bulks up to a nice thickness. The back has a glued-on pocket, which isn’t very easy to access but would allow you to tuck away a small receipt or two.

hahnemuhle04

The travel booklet almost seemed to perform a bit better with watercolors– I realized I was using a better-quality set of paints so I did another test in the original journal just to be sure. I do think the paper in the booklet performed a bit better– the wetness didn’t seem to scrub up the fibers of the paper as much, and the colors seemed a bit cleaner. The fountain pens both worked better in the booklet too.

hahnemuhle07

All this has made me wonder if the original Hahnemuhle journal I got was the best representative of its kind, and whether another example might have somewhat better paper… which is a good excuse for me to buy a few more, especially since the Pastel Shop now has them priced at £5.40 (as of this writing), a reduction from their now-higher regular price of £7.20. (I bought my first one almost a year ago.) Unfortunately their “rest of world” shipping charge has increased from £5.95 to £12.95, so it’s not a great deal outside the UK either way… It’s still hard to find them elsewhere, but I did see that you can find the larger size on Amazon . I’m excited all over again at the thought of giving these another try as a sketchbook, even if they won’t become my everyday go-to notebook. With any luck, some US retailer will start carrying these so they’ll be easier and cheaper to buy here.

You convinced me to buy this sketch book! It looks lovely, I hope it’s as lovely in person.

Hello (: I’m interested in buying the really thick black journal i went on the website that you linked (The Pastel Shop) But i don’t know which one it is. I want the really thick journal not the skinny one, if you wouldn’t mind linking me to the exact one i want that would be so great, thank you.

This is the 9 x 14cm portrait travel journal that I have: http://thepastelshop.com/shopping/pgm-more_information.php?id=203&=SID#MOREINFO . If you search “Hahnemuhle Travel Journal” on the Pastel Shop, the results will include the tan-color thin booklets, which they call “Travel Booklet” and come in a 2-pack, and the actual “Travel Journals” which are black and come in 9 x 14 landscape or portrait, and 13 x 21 cm landscape or portrait, despite all the listings having the same photo.

Thank you for the review and I’m happy to inform everyone that they are available in the US. The Hahnemühle sketch books are available spiral-bound or thread-bound, with an elastic band to hold the covers shut.

Please contact us at 815-502-5880 and we’re happy to connect you with one our dealers who are carrying them in stock. You may also contact me directly [email protected] at any time.

21) How do you start a travel journal?

As with any creative process or craft, there is no one way to begin. It can depend on the layout of the journal itself as some notebooks guide you through the process of first writing out your itinerary and packing list and before reflecting on the trip. If you've chosen a journal with less structure (i.e. a bullet journal for example) then you can curate the table of contents to your wishes. You may decide to start a bucket list of places you want to visit or begin with a one-page entry of your latest trip. It can be helpful to brainstorm how you want to format your journal before you start so you don't waste paper, but trust that you will figure out the right method as you go along.

22) What do you write in a travel journal?

The options are endless! If your travel journal doesn't have specific prompts to respond to, you can let your imagination roam free on a blank sheet of lined or unlined paper. Write about your favorite outing, make a list of all the museums you visited or include daily entries that sum up that day's itinerary.

Best Travel Journal Apps to Collect Travel Memories

Crystal Crowder

Want to create a detailed journal of your travels that includes photos, points of interest, favorite memories, and much more? Just try out a few travel journal apps to see which is best to collect your travel stories, and even plan out new journeys.

Best for General Journaling: Day One

Best for sharing: travelmap, best for customization: journey, best for privacy: penzu, best for finding new adventures: polarsteps, best for looking back: diarium.

Available for: iOS , Android

Price: Free with premium option

Day One is easily one of the best travel journal apps – and overall journaling apps , by far. It’s incredibly easy to use, making it perfect for beginners who want to document their travel experiences or just journal day-to-day happenings. It also features encryption and password protection to help keep your entries safer.

The List, Map, and Menu sections of the Day One travel journal app.

Day One isn’t just for travel. However, the ability to create text and media entries, add details on a map, and even keep track of special moments on a calendar make it perfect for jotting down every memory during your trip.

Personally, I love that even the free version is ad-free. But, this is one of those times that the premium version is well worth it at under $3/month, thanks to the addition of unlimited journals. The free version allows unlimited entries in a single journal, video, up to 30 high-res photos per entry, and audio recording.

Available for: All platforms that support web apps

Price: Free with premium options

TravelMap doesn’t have a dedicated mobile app, but it does offer a web app. From the site’s homepage, tap your browser’s menu, and select Install app . It’s that easy. This adds an icon to your device. Tap it, select the menu, and choose Administration to start documenting your travel adventures.

The Posts, Map, and Main Menu of the TravelMap web app.

It’s completely free and easy to create a private blog, complete with a map showing lines to each destination. Upload up to 100 pictures and get your own domain for free. If you upgrade, you get 3,000 photos/year or unlimited, depending on the plan. Plus, the $97/year plan lets you import GPS files, create custom map styles, live track your travels, and more.

If you’re a travel blogger or influencer, TravelMap is perfect for sharing your travel memories with others in real time. Just share your TravelMap site, and they can join in at any time. If you’re traveling often, try these apps to save money on international travel .

Journey appears to be a standard journaling app on the surface, but when you check out the variety of plugins, it’s easy to see why this is one of the best travel journal apps. I highly recommend immediately adding the Location and Places plugin to automatically list where you are when you add a new entry. Plus, you can always access your journal from any browser – not just your phone.

Journey, one of the best customizable travel journal apps, showing the map, posts, and settings screens.

The free version is rather basic but still lets you geotag posts manually, add photos to your entries, and password protect your journal. It’s simple to use, and the free plugins let you add checklists, change journal colors, upload automatically to other services, record the weather, record your mood, and more.

The premium version boosts the experience by adding larger cloud backups, more media storage, end-to-end encryption, shared web links, custom templates, and more.

Penzu uses passwords and even military-grade encryption to help keep your entries safer. You can completely wipe local storage if you’re switching to a new device. It’s the focus on privacy that makes this stand out as one of the best travel journal apps.

Penzu journaling app showcasing the Journal, Entry, and Encryption pages.

While it’s designed for any type of digital diary, you get unlimited entries and add photos and basic customization – completely free. As with most apps like this, the premium version gives you some nice perks, such as higher level encryption, unlimited journals (only one in free), handwritten fonts, much more customization, writing prompts, and more.

If keeping your travel memories private is important, upgrading is worth it. Otherwise, a good password in the free version is all you need.

Price: Free

Polarsteps does something most other travel journal apps don’t – it guides you toward new adventures. Think of the platform as a traveling social network. Upload your travels, or keep them private. Explore guidebooks, photos, and more from fellow travelers. If you’re feeling inspired to go on a new trip, find out how to save money on flights .

Exploring new places on the Polarsteps app, showing the main screen and explore pages.

Surprisingly, it’s completely free to use Polarsteps, and your high-res photos are automatically uploaded to the cloud (if you want) to help save space on your phone. Once again, it’s free.

Explore your memories at any time, share them with others, and even create your own guidebooks. You can also turn your memories into an elegant hardcover book. This is how the app makes money, but it’s optional.

Diarium isn’t just a travel journal app. Journal about any and everything. But it’s easy to tag entries with a location, see travel memories in the calendar view, and even check out maps to see where you’ve traveled at a glance.

Diarium travel app showing the timeline, on this day, and main menu screens.

What I love is the different views. View entries in a calendar, timeline, or map format. Easily search for past entries, or turn on the On This Day notification for a fun look back. If you’ve used another journaling app in the past, Diarium helps you import your entries to make transitioning much easier.

While the app is cross-platform between iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows, you must pay a separate fee for each platform. For instance, to go between Android and Windows, you’d need to buy Diarium for each platform. However, it is just a one-time fee per platform.

No matter which of these travel journal apps you choose, it’s all about enjoying yourself during the journey. It’s not always easy to get perfect pictures for your journal, but try these online photo editing tools to help turn okay photos into amazing ones, or use a little AI magic to make your pictures even better.

AAA forecasts nearly 44M travelers for Memorial Day weekend: See best times to travel

hahnemuhle travel journals

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, which means people will be flooding highways and airports this weekend looking to get away for some rest and relaxation.

The American Automobile Association is projecting nearly 44 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Memorial Day holiday travel period, which is defined by the organization as the five-day period from Thursday, May 23 to Monday, May 27.

"We haven't seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years," said Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, in a news release. "We're projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we're exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead."

The organization projects over 38 million people will travel by car over Memorial Day weekend, over 3.5 million will travel by air and nearly 2 million will travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises and trains.

The 38 million drivers is the highest number for Memorial Day since AAA began tracking data in 2000 and is up 4% compared to last year. The 3.5 million air travelers is an increase of nearly 5% over last year and, according to AAA, this will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005.

Best, worst times to travel for Memorial Day weekend

Drivers leaving Thursday or Friday should hit the road early to avoid mixing with commuters, AAA said, citing data from transportation data and insights provider INRIX. Drivers going back home Sunday or Monday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips will peak.

“Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal. Travelers should stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX, in the news release.

Here's a breakdown of the best and worst times to travel by car depending on which day you are traveling:

Thursday, May 23

  • Best travel time: Before 11 a.m. and after 7 p.m.
  • Worst travel time: Between noon and 6 p.m.

Friday, May 24

  • Best travel time: Before 11 a.m. and after 8 p.m.
  • Worst travel time: Between noon and 7 p.m.

Saturday, May 25

  • Best travel time: Before 1 p.m. and after 6 p.m.
  • Worst travel time: Between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Sunday, May 26

  • Best travel time: Before 1 p.m.
  • Worst travel time: Between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Monday, May 27

  • Best travel time: After 7 p.m.

Gas prices continue to decrease heading into Memorial Day weekend

According to AAA, the national average for a gallon of gasoline has fallen four cents since last week, to $3.60. The primary reasons are weak domestic demand and oil costs below $80 a barrel, according to the organization.

“Barring some unforeseen event, this pokey drop in pump prices is not likely to change anytime soon,” said Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson, in a news release. “There are seven states with county gas averages at less than $3 a gallon. This trend will likely accelerate as more gas outlets east of the Rockies drop their prices.”

This Memorial Day weekend, drivers can expect similar gas prices as last year when the national average was about $3.57.

"Pump prices rose this spring but have held somewhat steady in recent weeks," AAA said in the news release, while also noting that prices may creep higher as the summer driving season gets underway.

The wildcard remains the cost of oil, according to the organization, and unlike last year, there are now two wars – in the Middle East and Ukraine – that could roil the oil market.
