Hoogtepunten in Zweden

Als je naar Zweden gaat, mag een bezoek aan Stockholm zeker niet ontbreken. Deze prachtige stad is gebouwd op veertien eilanden en wordt ook wel het Venetië van het noorden genoemd. Je kunt er heerlijk slenteren door de smalle straatjes van Gamla Stan, de oude stad, en genieten van de vele bezienswaardigheden zoals het Koninklijk Paleis, het stadhuis en de kathedraal. Verder zijn er veel musea, parken en restaurants waar je kunt genieten van de Zweedse keuken.

Een andere stad die de moeite waard is om te bezoeken, is Göteborg. Dit is de tweede stad van Zweden en ligt aan de westkust. Hier vind je onder andere het pretpark Liseberg, het Gothenburg Art Museum en het Universeum Science Centre. Ook kun je er heerlijk shoppen in de vele winkels en boetiekjes.

Als je meer van de natuur houdt, dan is een bezoek aan het noorden van Zweden aan te raden. Hier vind je uitgestrekte bossen, bergen en meren. Je kunt er bijvoorbeeld gaan wandelen in het Abisko National Park, waar je ’s nachts ook het noorderlicht kunt zien. Verder is het Sarek National Park een aanrader voor wandelaars en natuurliefhebbers.

Op cultureel gebied heeft Zweden ook veel te bieden. Zo zijn er veel historische kastelen en paleizen, zoals het Kasteel Drottningholm, dat op de werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO staat. Ook zijn er veel festivals en evenementen, zoals het Midsommarfeest en het Nobelprijs Banket.

Marstrand is een prachtig eiland in de westelijke Bohuslän-archipel van Zweden. Het is een populaire bestemming voor toeristen vanwege zijn pittoreske omgeving en rijke geschiedenis. Het eiland ligt op slechts 45 minuten rijden van Göteborg en is gemakkelijk bereikbaar per auto, bus of veerboot.

De geschiedenis van Marstrand gaat terug tot de 13e eeuw, toen het nog een belangrijke haven was voor de Noorse handelaren. Het eiland was strategisch gelegen tussen Zweden en Noorwegen en was daarom van groot belang tijdens verschillende oorlogen. In de 17e eeuw werd het eiland versterkt en uitgebouwd tot een militaire vesting. Tijdens deze periode werd ook het prachtige kasteel Carlsten gebouwd, dat nog steeds een belangrijk kenmerk is van het eiland.

Een van de belangrijkste bezienswaardigheden op Marstrand is het imposante kasteel Carlsten, dat hoog op een heuvel boven de stad uittorent. Het kasteel is gebouwd in de 17e eeuw en heeft een rijke geschiedenis als gevangenis en als verdedigingswerk. Vadstena is een historische stad in de provincie Östergötland, gelegen aan de oever van het Vättern-meer in Zweden. De stad heeft een rijke geschiedenis die teruggaat tot de middeleeuwen en is vandaag de dag een populaire toeristische bestemming vanwege zijn pittoreske omgeving en vele bezienswaardigheden.

Vadstena werd gesticht in de 14e eeuw als een kloosterstad. Het klooster van Vadstena was een belangrijk religieus centrum in Zweden en trok veel pelgrims aan. De stad groeide snel en werd een belangrijk handelscentrum. In de 16e eeuw bouwde Gustav Vasa, de koning van Zweden, een kasteel in Vadstena. Het kasteel werd later uitgebreid en gerenoveerd en is vandaag de dag nog steeds een belangrijk kenmerk van de stad.

Een van de belangrijkste bezienswaardigheden in Vadstena is het Vadstena kasteel. Het kasteel is gebouwd in de 16e eeuw en heeft een rijke geschiedenis als residentie van de Zweedse koninklijke familie. Tegenwoordig is het kasteel een museum waar bezoekers meer kunnen leren over de geschiedenis van de stad en het kasteel zelf.

Sundsvall is vooral bekend om zijn prachtige architectuur. In het centrum van de stad vind je veel gebouwen uit het einde van de 19e eeuw, die de stad een unieke uitstraling geven. Een van de bekendste gebouwen is het stadhuis van Sundsvall, dat werd gebouwd na de grote brand van 1888 die bijna de hele stad verwoestte. Het stadhuis heeft een prachtige klokkentoren en een indrukwekkende gevel die je zeker moet zien.

Een andere plek die je niet mag missen is de oude stad van Sundsvall. Deze wijk is een van de best bewaarde voorbeelden van een oude houten stad in Zweden. Hier vind je veel charmante houten huizen, smalle straatjes en gezellige cafés en restaurants. De oude stad is ook de thuisbasis van het Sundsvalls museum, waar je meer te weten kunt komen over de geschiedenis van de stad.

Als je van natuur houdt, dan is Sundsvall ook de perfecte plek om te bezoeken. De stad ligt aan de kust van de Botnische Golf en biedt prachtige uitzichten over de zee. In de zomer kun je genieten van zonnige dagen op de stranden van Sundsvall, terwijl je in de winter kunt genieten van prachtige sneeuwlandschappen. Er zijn ook veel natuurreservaten in de buurt van Sundsvall, waar je kunt wandelen, fietsen of zelfs kajakken.

Tot slot is Sundsvall ook een geweldige plek om te genieten van de Zweedse cultuur. Er zijn veel festivals en evenementen gedurende het hele jaar, zoals het jaarlijkse Jazz Festival en het Culturele Festival. Hier kun je genieten van live muziek, theater en andere culturele activiteiten.

Het Zweedse Malmo

Malmo is een prachtige stad in het zuiden van Zweden en is de derde grootste stad van het land. De stad heeft een lange geschiedenis en een rijke cultuur die teruggaat tot de middeleeuwen. Het is een van de meest multiculturele steden in Zweden en heeft een bruisend nachtleven, mooie parken en prachtige architectuur. Als je op zoek bent naar een unieke ervaring in Zweden, dan is Malmo zeker een bezoek waard.

Een bezoek aan Malmo is niet compleet zonder een bezoek aan het historische kasteel Malmöhus. Dit kasteel werd oorspronkelijk gebouwd in 1434 en is sindsdien uitgebreid en gerenoveerd. Vandaag de dag is het een museum dat de geschiedenis van de stad en de regio documenteert, evenals de hedendaagse kunst toont. Het kasteel ligt aan de haven van de stad en biedt een prachtig uitzicht op de zee.

Een andere belangrijke bezienswaardigheid in Malmo is de Turning Torso. Dit is het hoogste gebouw van Scandinavië en is ontworpen door de Spaanse architect Santiago Calatrava. Het gebouw heeft een uniek ontwerp dat doet denken aan een gedraaide torso en biedt een prachtig uitzicht op de stad en de zee.

Als je van winkelen houdt, dan moet je zeker een bezoek brengen aan de Möllevångstorget, ook wel bekend als Möllan. Dit is de meest multiculturele wijk van Malmo en biedt een breed scala aan winkels en eetgelegenheden. Je vindt hier voedsel uit alle hoeken van de wereld, evenals unieke Zweedse gerechten.

Voor een ontspannen middag in de stad kun je een bezoek brengen aan het prachtige Slottsparken. Dit park ligt op slechts een paar minuten lopen van het centrum van de stad en biedt prachtige bloementuinen, groene gazons en mooie fonteinen. Het is een geweldige plek om te ontspannen en te genieten van de zon op een mooie dag.

Malmo is ook een stad met een bruisend nachtleven. Je vindt hier tal van bars, nachtclubs en restaurants waar je kunt genieten van een drankje en een hapje. Als je van live muziek houdt, dan moet je zeker een bezoek brengen aan Moriska Paviljongen, een van de bekendste muziekpodia in de stad.

Vätternmeer

Zweden staat bekend om zijn prachtige natuurlijke landschappen, en het Vätternmeer is daar geen uitzondering op. Dit diepblauwe meer is het op één na grootste meer van het land en biedt een rustige en serene omgeving waar u kunt genieten van de schoonheid van de natuur.

Het meer heeft een omtrek van ongeveer 300 kilometer en is omringd door prachtige bossen, weiden en heuvels. Er zijn tal van activiteiten die u hier kunt doen, zoals vissen, zwemmen, kajakken en zeilen. De kustlijn biedt een prachtig uitzicht en is perfect om te wandelen, joggen of fietsen.

Een van de beste manieren om het Vätternmeer te verkennen, is door het volgen van de Vätternrundan-route. Dit is een 300 kilometer lange fietstocht die rond het meer gaat en u door enkele van de mooiste landschappen van Zweden brengt. De route is uitdagend maar de moeite waard, en biedt een geweldige manier om de omgeving te verkennen.

Een andere populaire activiteit is vissen; Het Vätternmeer staat namelijk bekend om zijn zalmforel, die alleen hier te vinden is. Er zijn tal van visgidsen die u kunt inhuren om u te helpen bij het vangen van deze vis. Als u niet van vissen houdt, zijn er nog tal van andere activiteiten, zoals kajakken of zeilen, die je kunt doen.

Als u een meer ontspannen vakantie wilt, kunt je genieten van de stranden rond het meer. Er zijn tal van stranden waar je kunt zwemmen en zonnebaden. De stranden zijn kindvriendelijk en bieden een veilige omgeving om te spelen.

Het Vätternmeer is niet alleen een prachtige natuurlijke omgeving, maar heeft ook een rijke geschiedenis. Er zijn tal van historische bezienswaardigheden rond het meer, zoals de middeleeuwse stad Vadstena. Deze stad heeft een kasteel uit de 14e eeuw en is een populaire toeristische attractie.

State visit to Sweden - programme

At the invitation of His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf, Their Majesties King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima will pay a state visit to Sweden from Tuesday 11 to Thursday 13 October 2022. The visit will take place in Stockholm and Gothenburg. Head of State, King Willem-Alexander and Queen will be accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs Wopke Hoekstra. The trip will also include the participation of Minister of Defence Kajsa Ollongren, Minister of Education, Culture and Science Robbert Dijkgraaf and Minister for the Environment Vivianne Heijnen.

The state visit affirms the good relationship between Sweden and the Netherlands, which goes back to the 17th century. Today, the two countries are working together to make Europe greener, more resilient and economically more robust. The visit will focus on the energy transition, sustainability, life sciences and smart mobility and transport. It will also highlight shared values and collaboration on innovative solutions to the challenges we face, now and in the future. 

Tuesday 11 October – Stockholm

The state visit will begin in Stockholm, where the King and Queen will be received by King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia during a welcome ceremony at the Royal Palace. In the afternoon the King and Queen will meet with the Speaker of the Riksdag (the Swedish parliament) and the prime minister, before proceeding to the Vasa Museum. The Vasa is a warship that was designed and built by a Dutch shipbuilder. However, it capsized and sank in Stockholm Harbour in 1628, shortly after setting sail for the first time. After having lain on the seabed for 333 years, the ship was raised, restored and is now on display at the museum. After a tour of the Vasa, the ship’s bell of the frigate Princess Sophia Albertina, which ran aground off the coast of Den Helder in 1781, will be formally returned to Sweden. The bell was found by recreational divers in 2002. The return of the ship’s bell marks the cooperation between the two countries in the field of maritime cultural heritage. In the evening, King Carl Gustaf will host a state banquet in the Royal Palace, where both heads of state will give speeches. 

Wednesday 12 October – Stockholm

Day two of the state visit will start with a meeting with CEOs of Dutch and Swedish companies to discuss shared challenges and scope for collaboration in a wider range of areas. The King and Queen will then receive members of the Dutch community in Sweden, followed by lunch in Stockholm city hall with the mayor and the president of the city council. In the afternoon the royal entourage will travel to the energy company Stockholm Exergi in an electric hydrofoil built by Swedish boatbuilder Candela. As the boat gains speed, the hydrofoil lifts it up, reducing drag and allowing even greater speeds. From 2023 the electric hydrofoil will be used as a ferry in Stockholm. Stockholm Exergi is one of Scandinavia’s largest energy companies. They utilise residual heat and convert biofuels and the waste that no longer can or should be recycled into energy. After the tour at Exergi, the King and Queen will visit SciLifeLab, a research facility for an international community of researchers working in the life sciences and other areas, which fosters collaborations on innovative healthcare solutions. In the evening, as thanks for the hospitality they have received in Stockholm, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima will host a concert by the ensemble of violinist Tim Kliphuis. 

Thursday 13 October – Gothenburg

The third day of the state visit will take place in Gothenburg and will start with a tour of Lindholmen Science Park. Here, scientists, businesses and government work together on innovations for the development of sustainable cities, with a focus on sustainable transport and mobility, and on digitalisation. The entourage will then take an electric ferry to the Västra Götaland County governor’s residence for lunch. During a boat tour of Gothenburg harbour in the afternoon, the King and Queen will be given more information about the development of green shipping corridors that promote sustainable alternatives to conventional shipping fuels. Other subjects to be discussed include digital corridors for the secure exchange of digital data and documents. During the boat tour, the port authorities of Rotterdam and Gothenburg will sign an agreement on cooperation. The state visit will conclude with a visit to Volvo Trucks Experience Centre for a demonstration of electric trucks and excavators, and a presentation on other developments in the areas of sustainable heavy transport and sustainable supply chains.  Government Information Service, no. 251

The Wadden Sea World Heritage Site boasts the title of ‘most beautiful nature area’ in the Netherlands. The Wadden Sea is one of the last remaining large tidal areas where the forces of nature are free to do as they please. It is different every time you visit it  as water, sediment and sand move with the tides. Thanks to the many gullies, creeks and channels the mudflats and sandy plains are exposed, providing a resting place for seals and where birds can forage to their hearts’ content.

From ABBA to IKEA, Pippi Longstocking to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo , the Nobel Prizes to Ingmar Bergman, Sweden has given so much to the world – and it's equally generous to travelers. 

Stretching from the Arctic tundra of Lapland to the fertile farmlands and sandy beaches of Skåne, Europe’s fifth-largest country has something for every interest: captivating cities, picturesque small towns, intriguing historic sites and pristine, diverse nature within easy reach, no matter where you find yourself. Here are some of Sweden’s most unmissable destinations.

Delve into history, culture and nature in Stockholm 

Few cities blend history, culture and nature as well as Stockholm . Founded around 1252, Sweden’s capital straddles 14 islands where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea. With scenic views galore, distinct neighborhoods and abundant green space, it’s a wonderful place to simply wander.

Explore the winding cobblestone streets of Gamla Stan , stroll along the waterfront boulevard Strandvägen, take a boat trip into the stunning archipelago or stop for a coffee and pastry at one of the city’s many cafés. For more focused sightseeing, Stockholm has endless attractions to keep you busy, from City Hall and the Royal Palace to top-notch museums such as  Skansen ,  Fotografiska  and  Vasamuseet .

Get to know laidback Gothenburg

Sweden’s second city in terms of size, Göteborg , as it's known locally, has a laidback west-coast vibe that sets it apart. Streetcars rattle past 17th-century canals, lively squares and the broad boulevard Kungsportsavenyn, lined with pubs and restaurants.

Along with verdant parks, diverse walking neighborhoods and great shopping and dining, Göteborg has an excellent city history museum and an art museum with an outstanding collection of paintings by Nordic artists. Ship lovers won’t want to miss Maritiman , where you can climb aboard vessels including a historic lightship, a submarine and a destroyer.

Soak up the coastal scenery in Bohuslän 

Sandwiched between Göteborg and the Norwegian border, Bohuslän is an enticing mix of gorgeous coastal scenery, idyllic small towns and fascinating history.

Explore the impressive 17th-century Carlsten Fortress atop Marstrand island, ponder the mysteries of hundreds of ancient petroglyphs near Tanum, kayak the fjords around the region’s many islands, hike a coastal trail or just relax and soak up the natural beauty and lively summer atmosphere in picturesque waterfront communities, such as Smögen, Fjällbacka and Grebbestad.

Take in traditional arts and handicrafts in Dalarna 

Few places have shaped Sweden's international image as much as Dalarna , a region rich in cultural history and tradition. The area around Lake Siljan is a center for folk music, dance and handicrafts, including iconic wooden Dala horses, which you can see being carved and painted by hand at factories in Nusnäs .

In Falun, Sweden’s most important copper mine, which closed in 1992 after operating for a thousand years, is now a fascinating tourist attraction with underground tours. Other highlights include the homes of artists Carl Larsson and Anders Zorn and composer Hugo Alfvén . 

Get spiritual in Uppsala

Uppsala has been an important center for learning, religion, culture and power for at least 1500 years. At Gamla Uppsala , north of the city center, three large royal burial mounds attest to the site's importance in the 6th century, and its adjacent museum has fascinating exhibits about the area’s history.

In modern Uppsala, stroll along the river Fyrisån, and wander through the parks, squares and cobbled streets around the oldest university and the largest cathedral in the Nordic countries, both dating from the 15th century. Plant lovers won’t want to miss the university’s Linnaean Gardens of Uppsala , comprising a botanical garden, an orangery and a tropical greenhouse , among other attractions.

Tailor a trip to practically any interest in Lapland 

Sweden’s far north, Lapland is a huge area, so where to go depends on your particular interests. Looking for majestic alpine scenery and wilderness hiking? The region has both in spades, including several national parks and one of the world’s great long-distance trails, Kungsleden . 

Hoping to see the Northern Lights? Abisko National Park is particularly renowned for ideal aurora conditions, though you’ll have excellent chances all over northern Sweden in autumn and winter.

Want an unusual hotel experience? Head to the Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi or Treehotel in Harads. Want to learn about Scandinavia’s indigenous people? Jokkmokk is something of a Sámi capital, with an interesting cultural museum, Ájtte , and a vibrant annual winter market . 

Hike to great heights in Höga Kusten 

Between Härnösand and Örnsköldsvik, the High Coast has been rising steadily since the end of the last Ice Age, elevating the ancient shoreline as much as 286m (938ft) above the present-day coast. Hiking trails, a chairlift and a via ferrata lead to the top of Skuleberget, which has panoramic views.

Head to Skuleskogen National Park for more hiking trails showcasing the region’s fascinating geology, or explore the lovely islands just offshore, including Ulvön and Trysunda. Further south the E4 highway crosses Sweden’s longest suspension bridge; an overlook at the north end provides views of the impressive structure.

See a different side of Swedish history in Skåne 

Previously a Danish county, Skåne only became a permanent part of Sweden in 1658, and the region’s unique history is evident in its distinct dialect and in the half-timbered houses of its medieval cities and towns, such as Lund and Ystad. Malmö , Sweden’s third-largest city, is an eclectic blend of history, culture and cutting-edge architecture, including the iconic Turning Torso . 

Skåne also has tremendous natural beauty, from the white-sand beaches of Österlen and the jagged coastline of Kullaberg to deep forests and golden agricultural landscapes with vast skies, and its many splendid castles and palaces include Sofiero , known for its beautiful gardens.

Go back in time in Kalmar and shop for glass in Glasriket

An important town during the Middle Ages, Kalmar has one of Sweden’s finest Renaissance castles , as well as a county museum with thousands of astonishingly well-preserved artifacts recovered from the royal ship Kronan, sunk nearby in a 1676 battle.

To the west is  Glasriket , a forested region known as the Kingdom of Crystal, that's home to more than a dozen diverse glassworks, where you can watch artisans work, shop at company stores and perhaps even try your own hand at glassblowing. The most renowned, Kosta Boda , dates from 1742.

Next door, the Kosta Boda Art Hotel has gorgeous art glass everywhere, including a stunning blue-glass bar. For a completely different style, head to Malerås , which produces unique painted and engraved art glass.

Have a medieval adventure in Gotland

A hotly contested hub of Baltic trade for centuries, Sweden’s largest island is dotted with sheep farms, fishing villages, ancient ruins, medieval churches and sea stacks ( raukar ) carved by the elements into fantastical shapes. Charming Visby , the largest town, has one of Scandinavia’s best-preserved medieval cores, a largely intact city wall and an excellent museum tracing the island’s history.

A short free ferry ride from Gotland’s northeastern tip lies stunning, windswept Fårö, beloved by director Ingmar Bergman . Off Gotland’s west coast, the island of Stora Karlsö is famous for its huge seabird colonies.

Get outside in Öland 

Just a bridge away from Kalmar, the long, narrow island of Öland is a world apart in terms of landscape and nature. Southern Öland has starkly beautiful scenery, with stone walls, wildflowers, windmills and rocky pastures. In the north lie Böda Sand, a spectacular, hugely popular beach, and Trollskogen , a magical forest with pine trees twisted by the elements into fantastical shapes.

Two scenic lighthouses, Långe Erik and  Långe Jan , punctuate the island’s northern and southern tips respectively. Other highlights include the impressive ruins of 17th-century Borgholms Castle and the lush park at Solliden Palace , the royal family’s summer home. Öland is also one of Sweden’s top birdwatching destinations, with several nature reserves that attract both resident and migratory species.
