Philadelphia! Don't miss British pop legends Tears For Fears at TD Pavilion at the Mann on June 21 with special guest Garbage.

Some forty years into one of music’s most impactful, sometimes tense, and yet curiously enduring partnerships, Tears For Fears have finally arrived together at The Tipping Point – the group’s ambitious, accomplished, and surprising first new studio album in nearly two decades.

And now, at very long last, Tears For Fears find themselves back in peak form at The Tipping Point , an inspired song cycle that speaks powerfully and artfully to our present tense. This is an album that vividly recalls the depth and emotional force of the group’s earliest triumphs. Imagine a far more outward-looking take on Tears For Fears' famously introspective 1983 debut album The Hurting set in an even more mad world, or 1985’s Songs From The Big Chair bravely confronting even bigger issues in our increasingly unruly world. Or even 1989’s The Seeds Of Love that sows a mix of love and other emotions.  The Tipping Point is the bold, beautiful, and powerful sound of Tears For Fears finding themselves together all over again.

Tickets are on sale now via  Ticketmaster.com ,  (800) 982-2787, or the  Mann Box Office .  Fast lane and premier parking upgrades are available for this show.

Tears For Fears have just announced the forthcoming release of their first new studio album in nearly two decades, THE TIPPING POINT . Arriving February 25th, 2022, via Concord Records , THE TIPPING POINT is a song cycle reflecting many of the personal and professional tipping points the pair — AND THE WORLD — have faced throughout the last several years. Pre-order the album HERE .

Tears For Fears - 'The Tipping Point'

Alongside the announcement they’ve also released their first single and the title track, “The Tipping Point.” Written by Orzabal and guitarist, writer and producer Charlton Pettus and co-produced by the band, Sacha Skarbek, and Florian Reutter, the explosive yet intimate track is filled to the brim with emotion. Inspired by a personal tipping point in Orzabal’s own life, this song captures the grief of watching someone you love lose their long-standing battle with disease. The accompanying visual, directed by the famed Matt Mahurin (Joni Mitchell, U2, Metallica), depicts the subtle and poetic portrait of imbalance. Watch the video HERE .

Tears For Fears were one of the most iconic bands of the ‘80s, selling over 30 million albums worldwide with singles such as “Shout,” “Everybody Wants To Rule The World,” “Mad World,” “Sowing The Seeds Of Love,” and “Woman In Chains” acknowledged as classics.

The Tipping Point is the band’s first album since their reunion album Everybody Loves A Happy Ending in 2004. Since then, the band have toured extensively, including a sold-out UK arena tour and in 2017 released Rule The World, a best-of compilation that returned the band to upper reaches of the album charts once more. Earlier this month the band were honored with the Outstanding Song Collection Award at the 2021 Ivor Novello Awards.

The Tipping Point is the bold, beautiful and powerful sound of Tears For Fears finding themselves together, once again.

Tears For Fears

ABOUT TEARS FOR FEARS Tears For Fears – Roland Orzabal (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Curt Smith (vocals, bass, keyboards) formed in Bath, England 1981. With 30 million albums sold worldwide, performing to countless sold-out audiences, and winning various awards, the band represent an inimitable intersection of pop palatability, clever and cognisant lyricism, guitar bombast, and new wave innovation. Their 1983 debut The Hurting yielded anthems such as “Mad World,” “Change,” and “Pale Shelter,” reaching RIAA Gold status in the United States. 1985’s Songs from the Big Chair became a watershed moment for the group and music at large. Boasting the signature BRIT Award-winning “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” “Shout,” “Head over Heels,” “Mothers Talk” and “I Believe (A Soulful Re-Recording),” it went quintuple-platinum and captured #1 on the Billboard Top 200. Slant dubbed it one of, “The Best Albums of the 1980s,” it was featured in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, and Consequence of Sound awarded it a rare A+ rating in a 20-year retrospective.1989’s Seeds of Love proved to be Orzabal and Smith’s last collaboration together until Everybody Loves A Happy Ending in 2004, which rekindled the creative fire between them. The band engaged in a three-year touring whirlwind across North America, Japan, South Korea, Manila, and South America beginning in 2010.

2013 saw them return with their first recorded music in a decade: a cover of Arcade Fire’s “Ready to Start.” The band returned once more in 2017 with the Rule The World best of collection which once more catapulted the band back to the upper echelon of the UK album charts. The duo’s DNA remains embedded within three generations of artists on both subtle and overt levels. Quietly casting a shadow over rock, hip-hop, electronic dance music, indie, and beyond, Kanye West interpolated “Memories Fade” on “The Coldest Winter” from the seminal 808s & Heartbreak, The Weeknd infused “Pale Shelter” into Starboy’s “Secrets,” David Guetta sampled “Change” for “Always,” and Drake utilized “Ideas as Opiates” as the foundation for “Lust For Life,” while Ally Brooke Hernandez, Adam Lambert, and Gary Jules recorded popular covers of “Mad World” and Disturbed took on “Shout,” and that’s only to name a few. Lorde cut a haunting cover of “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” for the Soundtrack of the blockbuster The Hunger Games – Catching Fire, which Tears For Fears gleefully would use as intro music live and thus bring everything full circle.

By Jazz Monroe

Tears for Fears Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith

Tears for Fears are heading out on a summer tour of North America. The Tipping Point Tour Part II kicks off in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on June 23, and wraps up six weeks later in Los Angeles. Cold War Kids will support on all dates.

Tears for Fears returned in 2021, announcing The Tipping Point —their first album in 17 years—and explaining that “before everything went so right with this album, everything first had to go wrong. It took years, but something happens when we put our heads together.” They began touring the record last year, playing shows with Alison Moyet and Garbage.

Tears for Fears Announce 2022 U.S. Tour

Tears for Fears will set out on an expansive nationwide tour in 2022 in support of their new album The Tipping Point .

“We couldn’t be more excited to start playing concerts again," Tears for Fears co-founder Curt Smith said in a news release. "We’ve missed seeing our friends on the road around the world, and the energy of performing live."

Bandmate Roland Orzabal added: “ The Tipping Point has been a long time in the making and we are looking forward to playing our favorites from the new album as well as our classics from throughout the years.”

The tour kicks off on May 20 in Cincinnati, roughly three years since the band’s most recent stateside performance, which took place in 2019 at the Shaky Knees festival in Atlanta. Tears for Fears' 2022 trek, which will feature support from Garbage, is currently scheduled to run through June 25.

A complete list of tour dates can be viewed below.

“I’m very much looking forward to it,” Smith shared during an exclusive conversation with UCR. “Particularly, because we now get to add new songs, which we haven’t been able to do for a long time. That makes it all the more exciting. The same way I get a kick out of putting together the running order on an album, putting together a running order live is great and a little terrifying at first – because you never know.”

Smith admits there may be some early growing pains as Tears for Fears integrates new songs on stage. “Normally, you don’t actually get a workable set until a few dates in,” he explained. “So, if you come to the beginning, it should be interesting. We’re flying by the seat of our pants because, you know, what sounds good to us in rehearsal, you don’t know – you never know until you’re in front of an audience. You never know what the response is going to be.”

Due on Feb. 25, The Tipping Point marks the first album in 17 years for Tears for Fears, best-known for such ‘80s classics as “Mad World,” “ Shout ,” “ Head Over Heels ” and “ Everybody Wants to Rule the World .” Smith said the group has been reenergized by the new material.

“This album, I think, is wonderful,” Smith says. “Normally when we finish records, I’m kind of done listening to them – because I’ve heard these songs so many times. But once we put this album, at the end of it, the journey it takes you on, I still listen to it. I mean, I listen to it when I go walk my dog and I’m like, ‘Yeah, we’ve done something that’s really good here.’ So in that sense, it’s very gratifying.”

They’ve been friends and musical collaborators over the course of five decades, dealt with worldwide stardom and personal turmoil, and endured a split that lasted nine years, but now the British hitmakers Tears For Fears are back. The musical story of band members Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith might have started in the 1980s, but it’s remained an interesting one. Let's look back at the albums and moments that made them.

What’s in a name?

Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, who had been friends since their early teens, formed Tears For Fears in 1981 in their hometown of Bath, England. They took their band name from a phrase found in the book Prisoners of Pain by Arthur Janov.

Tears for Fears Debut Four New Songs Live at 2022 Tour Kickoff: Review, Photos and Setlist

"The Tipping Point World Tour" is plenty satisfying in its familiarity, but full of welcome surprises as well

Tears for Fears Debut Four New Songs Live at 2022 Tour Kickoff: Review, Photos and Setlist

Addressing the crowd on Friday (May 20th), the first night of their amphitheater tour with Garbage at Cincinnati’s Riverbend Music Center, Tears for Fears founding member Roland Orzabal pinpointed the band’s mood as “chuffed,” as in “deeply satisfied in a particularly British manner.” The band had brought out “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” three songs into their set, sounding just as pristine and cathartic now as it did when first recorded nearly 40 years ago.

Conventional wisdom might be to save such an iconic hit for the latter half of the set or the encore. But Tears for Fears are not a mere legacy act capitalizing on Gen X-er nostalgia. You can identify the most popular songs by how many people start recording on their phones. But deeper cuts, like epic multi-parter “Bad Man’s Song,” were equally impactful. And the transitions from one song to another were so smooth that the audience had barely enough time to applaud for one before another was underway.

The sense of excitement emanating from Orzabal, co-founder Curt Smith, and the rest of the band was understandable on multiple levels. It was the first night of their first tour since 2019, and their first American tour since 2017 (get tickets here ). Then there was the fact that they released their first album of new material in almost two decades earlier this year, the excellent The Tipping Point . And finally, if there was ever a time to “shout” and “let it all out,” it’s now, for better or worse.

At-home listenings of Tears for Fears are rewarding enough. Experienced live, these songs become all the richer, enhanced by moments human (Orzabal’s ad-libs during “Sowing the Seeds of Love”) and more serendipitous (a delicate wind as he sings of how “the breeze blows gently” on “Bad Man’s Song”).

Speaking with Consequence recently, the duo said this set would be their “best one yet.” Maybe someone who saw them tour Songs from the Big Chair in 1985 would disagree. But this wasn’t a “well, at least you got to see them live’” performance; it was impressive without grading on any kind of curve.

Jack Grealish’s upset at his England snub is understandable – but he should not be shocked

Grealish, England

Follow live coverage of England vs Iceland in the final Euro 2024 warm-up match today

The thing people love about Jack Grealish is his authenticity. Even as England ’s first £100million footballer, a serial winner at Manchester City and an ambassador for Gucci, he remains unmistakably himself: Jack the Lad, a lovable scamp with a cheeky smile and a heart of gold.

He’s a throwback. Down to earth and off the cuff. In a world of stony-faced athletes whose first language is anodyne, here is a multi-talented, multi-millionaire footballer who doesn’t take himself too seriously.

On the greatest night of his career last June after Manchester City’s victory in the Champions League final in Istanbul, he freely admitted his performance against Inter Milan had been “awful”. “But I don’t care,” he said, wiping away the tears. “This is what I’ve worked for my whole life.”

Self-deprecation has been a recurring theme since that record-breaking transfer from Aston Villa in August 2021.

He has said he played “crap” in his first season at City. He made far more significant contributions in the run-in to their treble success in year two (“awful” night in Istanbul notwithstanding), but he acknowledged a struggle for form again in year three, even if it ended last month with a third consecutive Premier League winner’s medal.

Grealish was described last night as being “shocked” and “devastated” to be cut from England’s Euro 2024 squad by Gareth Southgate.

The “devastated” part is understandable. But “shocked”? Surely a player more self-aware than most cannot be totally shocked when, by his own admission, he has struggled for form for months while Phil Foden , Bukayo Saka , Cole Palmer , Anthony Gordon , Eberechi Eze and others have come on leaps and bounds.

Grealish has won 35 caps since breaking into the England squad in 2020, but Southgate has never seemed truly convinced by him. Only 15 of those 35 appearances have been in the starting line-up and, for all that public and media have clamoured for his selection at times, there have been few occasions when he has seized an opportunity with both hands. His only international goals were the fifth in a 5-0 win over Andorra and the sixth in a 6-2 victory over Iran at the 2022 World Cup.

At times, Grealish’s omission from the starting line-up has become a stick with which to beat Southgate. It added to the perception of him as a cautious middle manager in a Marks & Spencer waistcoat. It plays to one of the great themes of the England team in the 1970s in particular: free-spirited, shaggy-haired players like Frank Worthington, Rodney Marsh, Stan Bowles, Alan Hudson and Charlie George were adored by fans but distrusted by England managers who preferred straight lines and the straight-laced, all short-back-and-sides and 4-4-2.

At times, particularly during Euro 2020, Grealish wondered whether his reputation — the Jack the Lad label, some daft episodes in his private life — counted against him in Southgate’s eyes.

go-deeper

Jack Grealish, Gareth Southgate and England... it's complicated

There was a well-documented holiday a few years back as one of a group of fellow players who called themselves ‘The Avengers’, including James Maddison , Ben Chilwell and Dele Alli . All four have struggled to nail down a place in Southgate’s plans and, while Dele’s struggles have been of a more serious and long-term nature , it was no doubt noted in ‘The Avengers’ group chat that Chilwell was left out of the preliminary squad before Maddison and then, most dramatically, Grealish failed to make the final cut this time around.

England

‘The Avengers’ avenged? Some might see it that way. But this is about form. Chilwell had a stop-start season at Chelsea , hampered by knee and hamstring injuries. Maddison, having made an excellent start at Tottenham Hotspur , struggled to recover his performance level after returning from an ankle injury in January. Grealish suffered with a dead leg and a groin problem and never really got going at City.

Pep Guardiola stated publicly several times that Grealish needed to raise his game. There were oblique comments relating to the player’s fitness and attitude in training. From mid-January, Grealish started just eight matches for City in all competitions. Five times he came on as a substitute. On no fewer than nine occasions he was an unused substitute. In their final three games, including the FA Cup final against Manchester United, he did not appear for a minute.

There have been times in the recent past when the pool of talent available to England managers has been so small that big-name players at big clubs have been almost guaranteed to start regardless of their form at club level. That, gratifyingly, is no longer the case — at least not in attacking areas, where Southgate has suddenly found himself with an abundance of options.

Going into the 2018 World Cup, Southgate’s first tournament as manager, only four English players had scored more than 10 Premier League goals that season (Kane, Jamie Vardy , Raheem Sterling and Brighton & Hove Albion veteran Glenn Murray ). This season? Palmer 22, Foden 19, Dominic Solanke 19, Ollie Watkins 19, Jarrod Bowen 16, Saka 16, Eze 11, Gordon 11 — and that is before we get to Harry Kane (36 Bundesliga goals for Bayern Munich) and Jude Bellingham (19 goals for Real Madrid in La Liga ).

As Southgate said on Thursday evening, the bar for selection has been raised significantly by the emergence of so many bright young attacking players.

At Euro 2020, played a year later owing to Covid-19, Southgate’s options in wide attacking areas were Mason Mount , Marcus Rashford , Jadon Sancho, Sterling, Foden and Saka.

Foden and Saka have come on enormously since then, but Sancho, Sterling and Mount were dropped from the squad some time ago following prolonged dips in form at club level and Rashford also failed to make the preliminary squad for this tournament. Grealish registered three Premier League goals (in consecutive games in December) and one assist this season and, while there has always been more to his game than what can be measured in the most basic output figures, few would suggest he has been better out of possession than, say, Saka, Bowen, Gordon or Eze.

Grealish looked livelier in a half-hour cameo against Bosnia & Herzegovina on Monday night than he had done for weeks. It might have been what Southgate had in mind when he suggested afterwards that certain players had given him something positive to think about.

It left you wondering whether, against a packed defence, Grealish’s ability on the ball in wide positions might mean he could still be an appealing option from the bench for Southgate in Germany. But he doesn’t take defenders on like he used to.

In 2020-21, at Villa, he completed 2.67 successful take-ons per 90 minutes in the Premier League. That fell to 1.88 in his first year at City, adapting to a different role in a different team, rose slightly to 1.97 in year two and fell again to 1.61 in year three. You don’t have to be Jeremy Doku (4.92 per 90 minutes), but Eze (3.03), Palmer (1.79) and Gordon (1.65) all scored higher in what is commonly regarded as Grealish’s strongest suit.

Grealish

Significantly too, perhaps, those younger players have arrived with a freshness and vivacity that has been missing from Grealish’s game of late. While Southgate might be characterised as someone who favours the tried and trusted over exciting and new, the England manager has repeatedly shown a desire to have fresh, young talent on the fringes of his squad. If a player is third or fourth in line for their position, it makes sense for them to join the squad with a wide enthusiasm rather than the weariness of someone who fears they are going to be spending a tournament kicking their heels on matchday.

But Grealish cannot afford to look at this as an isolated setback, let alone as anything personal on Southgate’s part. It was widely felt that, for all the qualities he showed at Villa, he would need to raise his game significantly if he were to establish himself as a leading player in a team that aspired to dominate English and European football under Guardiola.

Has he done that? Some will say the answer lies in his collection of winner’s medals (three Premier League, one FA Cup , one Champions League , one European Super Cup, one Club World Cup). But he has only started 55 Premier League games in that time. He regards the first and third of those seasons as largely forgettable and, while the back end of the 2022-23 campaign saw a marked improvement and significant contributions, it was nothing like the influence that, for example, Guardiola has elicited from Foden this season.

Foden has just turned 24 and is getting better and better. Grealish will be 29 in September and, looking at his career as a whole, it is fair to describe his talent as one that has shined bright intermittently without ever truly dazzling. He has often seemed like one of those who might be happiest and most productive as the talismanic player in an average team, as was the case at Villa, rather than part of the supporting cast in a team with higher aspirations.

At times he has been praised for adding certain qualities to his game — not least pausa, as Guardiola calls it — but something of the free-spirited, swashbuckling Grealish of his late-Villa period has been lost. His numbers are down. So, too, it sometimes seems, is his mood. “I just think sometimes if you’re not playing and probably not up to it in training, in your own head, you just don’t feel confident,” he told reporters in April, reflecting on a challenging year.

At the heart of it, perhaps, is something he spoke about earlier in the season while on England duty. “I’m not saying it’s hard to get motivated; you can’t say that,” he said when asked whether there had been a struggle to find motivation after last season’s treble success. “But when you’ve done it, it’s kind of like, ‘What now?’ Do you know what I mean?’”

Again, it comes back to that everyman appeal of his. Few players these days would dare admit to such a thought. But Grealish sees it and says it as it is. Endearingly honest, fallible and authentic, at times to a fault.
