YORKSHIRE WILDLIFE PARK: All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (with Photos)

All Change and exciting new arrivals at Yorkshire Wildlife Park for reopening on April 12th

safari park at doncaster

New animals, a new reserve, a new purpose - built entrance and the first phase of a new visitor complex will surprise visitors when Yorkshire Wildlife Park, Doncaster, reopens on Monday April 12th. With the opening of the new entrance, visitors will see the preliminary phase of the Yorkshire Hive development taking shape and during 2021 more attractions, restaurants and shopping will open.

A pair of recently arrived Lowland Tapir, Maned Wolves and  a pack of Bush Dogs will make their debut in the new reserve Atlantic Forest which is the first of the reserves to open in 2021 as part of the Park’s expansion project. These three species are all found in the threatened habitat of the Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlantica) in South America. The Yorkshire Wildlife Park Foundation charity works with the conservation organisation WildCare in Misiones, Argentina helping protect and create wildlife corridors for the animals that live in the Atlantic Forest.

Staff are working hard to prepare the site and the reopened park will have wide ranging safety precautions including advance booking only, restrictions on visitor numbers, controlled time slots for visits and clear social distancing marking and messaging and increased cleaning protocols. The 175 acre park has over 5km of pathways and lots of outdoor space for visitors to enjoy.

Chief Executive John Minion is delighted to be reopening and also to be taking the major step in the next phase for Yorkshire Wildlife Park. ‘ we are delighted to have been given the green light to reopen the Park. So much has changed from our new entrance to our new arrivals in Atlantic Forest. We have been planning the expansion for several years now, so to be taking the first step of opening the new entrance and  the first new reserve Atlantic Forest is amazing. This is only a small part of our plans  for the next few years so watch this space and as restrictions lift over the coming months, we will be opening more exciting new developments.

We are really looking forward to being able to reopen all our outdoor play areas and outdoor café seating areas and  thi swill add a great extra dimension to a day out at the park. We are well practised now at implementing Covid precautions and we are lucky to be an outdoor attraction on an spacious site. Let’s hope that 2021 turns around to be a good year for all tourism  in Yorkshire. ‘

The New Animals in Atlantic Forest

The maned wolf  ( Chrysocyon brachyus ) is the most striking of the new arrivals. Having evolved to live in high grass savannas, the long legged maned wolves has a thick red coat, distinctive black markings and tall, erect ears. It is the largest canid of South America. Though It looks more like a long-legged fox than a wolf, genetic studies show that it is neither fox nor a true wolf, but a distinct species. Weighing up to 30 kg, they are endemic to Brazil, Bolivia, Argentina and Paraguay. YWP’s new residents are Ibera, a two year old female who has come from Nuremburg Zoo in Germany and Axenus, a four year old male from Paignton Zoo.

They are solitary animals in the wild, so do not live in packs nor do they howl. Instead, they communicate through scent marking and with a loud call know as roar-barking. They will tap their front foot on the ground to flush out prey from the grass and will jump up on their long legs to catch birds in flight. Although classified as carnivores, they are omnivores and in the wild up to 40% of their diet can be fruit. The maned wolf is classified as near threatened as the population is declining and fragmented as their habitat reduces.

Matilda and Luna, the two female Lowland tapir ( Tapirus terrestris ) aged 3 and 4 respectively, are settling in well and are sure to become firm favourites with rangers and visitors alike. Tapir use their mobile flexible snouts to browse leaves and pick up fruits, but they are also great swimmers and use them as a snorkel. The spiky thick hair on the nape of the neck is to protect that vulnerable area which is exactly where jaguars would target their attack. Weighing up to 225kg and up to 1.8m in length, they are not small animals and are more closely related to rhinos or horses that pigs.

The third species to arrive in the Atlantic Forest is the active and curious bushdog ( Speothos venaticus) . Tiny Tim, the new resident male has been very recently joined by three females. They live and hunt in small family packs. Just 5 -8 kg in weight, in the wild they live in the lowland forest, wet savannah and river habitats and have evolved partially webbed feet to help them swim better. Only the dominant pair will breed and the rest of the pack are subordinate and will help rear and protect the cubs. They are carnivores and will hunt agouti, capybara and even larger prey such as rhea. They hunt during the day and hide in their dens at night away from jaguars. Their disappearing habitat means that they are now classified as near threatened.

‘ We are delighted how the new animals are settling in,’ said Animal Manager Rick Newton. ‘ It is fascinating to have three very different species as part of the new reserve and I am sure that visitors will be excited to see them. The bush dogs are particularly active and inquisitive, I am sure they will become big favourites here. ‘

Shopping in the Hive

Offering another new aspect for visitors, there is a new leisure shopping offer at the free - admission entrance. It is a select mix of local independent shops and boutiques where visitors may browse for artisan food and drink, delicious sweet treats and confectionary, homeware, cards and accessories. The wide range of products continues with children’s clothes, stunning African art and wildlife photography and a new plants for the garden.

Safari Store:  A visit to YWP is not complete without a call into the Safari Store. Gifts, toys and lot more distinctive animal themed products are on offer here and visitors can also support the charity, the Yorkshire Wildlife Park Foundation by buying an animal adoption.

Cornerstone Coffee: Highest quality locally sourced produce, but brought with Italian passion, is on offer in this independent coffee shop.

Well what a blast. Thank you for making our stay at the Hex hotel and our first visit to YWP a great one. We had a fantastic day at YWP, great meal and experience in Evolution, brilliant nights sleep in the hotel and finished it all off in Uproar. 2 very tired but happy kids. All the staff were very friendly and helpful.
I just wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed our overnight stay yesterday. We're regular visitors to the park and didn't need to stay, as we're fairly local, but we couldn't resist a night at our favourite park! We loved our room and the amenities - everything seems so well thought out.

Lioness and cubs reunited at Yorkshire Wildlife Park after escaping war-torn Ukraine

  • Yorkshire Wildlife Park

safari park at doncaster

A lioness and her three cubs have finally been reunited at a UK wildlife facility after escaping war-torn Ukraine.

Mum Aysa was pregnant when she was found in an abandoned zoo in the Donetsk region after Russia's invasion.

She was subsequently taken to a holding facility in Poland but kept separate from her 18-month-old cubs Emi, Santa and Teddi for nine months.

After travelling 2,000 miles across Europe last month from Poznan Zoo, the lions were brought to Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster, where they have been acclimatising to their new surroundings.

P ark rangers said they felt like "proud parents" witnessing the long-anticipated reunion on Wednesday.

Deputy head of carnivores, Colin Northcott, said the animals' transformation had been extraordinary.

He said: "On my first visit to their temporary accommodation in Poland, the lions were very timid and scared of every bit of noise. They could not see their surroundings at all. We expected them to be incredibly nervous here, but they have settled down so fast and I am very pleased.

"These new surroundings are a world away from Poland, there is a lot more noise and commotion, but importantly the lions can see everything that is going on around them and where the noise is coming from. This doesn’t seem to scare them as much."

Teddi was first to be introduced to his new home, emerging from his crate within seconds.

Emi was next, and Santa was third, after taking longer to adjust to her surroundings. Mum Aysa was the last to leave her crate.

Rangers said she was so relaxed "it was almost like she had been there her whole life".

After close monitoring, the cubs were initially introduced through a mesh parting, and then reunited together in one den.

"It’s astonishing to see them go from those scared, cowering lions in Poland to head-rubbing each other throughout the day," said Mr Northcott.

"It does look like a long-lost family get-together. As with all new arrivals, the lions will take a while to settle and will be closely monitored, but we cannot wait for everyone to meet them - they will be a massive hit with the public."

The lions now have access to all the pens in the lion house and a mesh tunnel which runs alongside the seven-acre enclosure they will eventually live in.

Wielding seismic vocals that register on the Richter scale, unbridled soul, confessional lyrics, and empowering attitude, the multiplatinum BRIT Award-winning and GRAMMY® Award-nominated songstress Jessie J touches hearts every time she steps up to a microphone. With over 1.5 billion streams, countless gold and platinum certifications, and 23 million record sales to date, the singer’s voice continues to ring out in nearly every corner of the globe.

In 2011, she carved out a spot on the world stage with her full-length debut, Who You Are . Not only did it go platinum, but it also bowed in the Top 15 of the Billboard Top 200 and yielded six Top 10 smashes at radio. Among those, “Price Tag” [feat. B.o.B] clinched #1 in 18 territories and eventually became quadruple-platinum. The double-platinum “Domino” arrived on its heels. Countless accolades followed with the prestigious BRIT Award for “Critic’s Choice,” BBC’s “Sound of 2011,” and an invitation to serve as the 2012 London Olympic Games Ambassador. 2014 exploded as her once in a lifetime team-up “Bang Bang”—with Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj—dominated charts and earned a six-times platinum certification. Her sophomore set, Sweet Talker , entered the Top 200 in the Top 10.

In 2016, Jessie J took over the big screen, making her debut as Sid's love interest, Brooke, in Ice Age: Collision Course . She also opened Fox’s Grease Live with a cover of the title song “Grease Is the Word.”

In between jaw-dropping performances everywhere, she underwent an impressive transformation throughout 2017. Opening up like never before, she crafted an epic body of work in the form of R.O.S.E. [Realizations, Obsessions, Sex, and Empowerment] . Released in four parts over 2018, she brought this confessional opus to the masses with sold out shows on both sides of the pond and amplified her impact dramatically in the process. At the same time, she capped off the year with her first-ever holiday album, This Christmas Day . The project boasted dream collaborations with Boyz II Men and Babyface as she breathed new life into numerous Christmas staples.

A decade since she started uploading now-classic bedroom covers, and Jessie J’s voice keeps getting bolder, better, and bigger. First single “I Want Love” off her new project, executive produced by Ryan Tedder, was released in 2021 to rave reviews. With further new music in the works and anticipation mounting, the next generation might just belong to her too.

Phats & Small

Best known for international hit single Turn Around, Phats and Small are a British dance music duo made up of Jason "Phats" Hayward and Russel Small.

Phats & Small stormed the music scene in 1998 with debut single Turn Around reaching number three in the UK Singles Chart before climbing to number two. Only a year later had they released their first album, Now Phats What I Small Music, a clever play on words combining their names with compilation series Now That's What I Call Music.

Now veterans of the scene with more than 20 years’ experience behind them, the pair have played sold out shows at top clubs all over the world including many of the world’s greatest from Cocoon in Frankfurt to Ministry Of Sound in London. Along the way they have teamed up with fellow big stars such as Fatboy Slim, Carl Cox, Todd Terry and Arthur Baker. Now they are as important and influential as ever, and are signed to the Armada label founded by legendary EDM star Armin van Buuren.
