We visited RRR today as part of our Fairbanks vacation, and it was terrific. Tyrone (the Ranch manager) and his team led our two hour introduction to all things reindeer, including a meet and greet with the entire antlered family, who were a pleasure to meet. We learned about the history of the ranch and the animals themselves. Each staffer led a module about the animals and what makes them unique as we walked the grounds. Our tour consisted of about six small groups, for a total of about 20 people. There were little kids there, as well, and the staff did a great job describing how the kids (and we all) would interact with the reindeer in a manner that was embraced by the visitors and reindeer alike to remain safe while around them. They are, by the way, among the most docile large animals in the world, and we never once felt the least bit of risk. They're like large bunny rabbits. And you'll love it. There are a million things to do here - we've seen best-in-class Aurora astral ballets, crossed the Arctic Circle, stopped by the Fountainhead Auto Museum (another must-see), and more. Add a visit to RRR to your itinerary; it's unique and uniquely enjoyable.

If you are in the Fairbanks area I highly recommend checking out the Running Reindeer Ranch. We learned a lot about Reindeer and talking a walk through the woods with them was nothing short of magical. It's truly a unique experience.

What a beautiful experience. It's a ranch where you get to hike in the forest along with the reindeers and learn interesting facts about them. Jane and her staff were kind. In the end, you get to snack on some cookies and drink hot cocoa. Overall, this was a great 2-hour tour!

The Running Reindeer Ranch is a must see attraction around the Fairbanks area for anyone visiting or that lives here. This attraction is a reindeer ranch that you visit and take a tour of while interacting with reindeer up close along the way and throughout. You'll be able to pet them and learn about their unique nature and history. The guides here are amazing and will answer most questions you have and have one of the best attitudes you'll encounter in Fairbanks. Overall, a great experience!

I saw the amazing reviews this ranch has and just had to try it out! I went on the 2pm walk yesterday, 2/26, and was so amazed by the herd and all of the staff. All of the information was very interesting and informative, and we got the most awesome hands on experience with the reindeer. There was ample time after the walk to take pictures and spend up close and personal time with all of the reindeer! I was able to bring my Canon and got some really amazing shots. We were then treated to hot coco and cookies. Definitely a must when visiting Fairbanks!!

If you're near Fairbanks DO THIS! We took our two handicapped daughters to see the reindeer and didn't know what to expect. There are many places that don't allow them to participate, though I always inform the staff before booking that we'll need extra help. The staff at Running Reindeer Ranch went above and beyond to make this an exceptional experience that my girls will never forget! First the reindeer came down the hill to mingle while we were treated to introductions to each one. The staff helped push our daughters' chairs along the trail so they were able to "walk" with the reindeer. Lots of fun stories and educational information about the reindeer made it fun too! At the end of the walk we were treated to yummy homemade cookies and hot chocolate. Don't miss this opportunity!

I just had the best time with Jane, her team and course her amazing reindeer stole the show. If you are in the Fairbanks or near the Fairbanks area, this is a must do. from the moment you step on property to the moment that you leave, you are an a magical place. You learned so much about these beautiful animals. After a while, they bring them down one at a time for you to get to know them, and then they let them off their leads for them to roam around. they are so cute. They come right up to you go right between your chairs. They have no cares in the world. As they're bringing more and more they're just all hanging around and once you've met all of them then you start your walk-through the woods.. As you're walking through the woods, you have stopped along the way where you learn more about them. The reindeer are walking with you sometimes running through the woods. It truly is a beautiful site to see them in their natural habit.. And they do come up with you again brush along with you. They are very curious animals. At the end of your stroll, there's cookies and lemonade and one more time for you to say goodbye to the reindeer. And yes, of course there are lots of opportunities for photos.. You will not be disappointed.

If you are in Fairbanks you should check out Running Reindeer Ranch. My husband, 9 year old son and I did the 10:00am walk and it was chilly but so fun walking in the snow with all the reindeer. The guides were so friendly and knowledgeable. The cookies were delicious. Overall a great time.

Such a cool and worthwhile adventure! These reindeer are fun and unique individuals, with an amazing coat of fur. The guides were personable, engaged and full of great information. I highly recommend this tour for adults and older children alike.

Running Reindeer Ranch – Top Spot for Reindeer in Fairbanks, Alaska

Please share if you enjoy this content!

Visiting Running Reindeer Ranch is one of the best things to do in Fairbanks, Alaska. This reindeer farm sprung from a childhood passion and became a thriving family-owned small business.

I’ll admit that when I booked my trip to Fairbanks to (hopefully) see the aurora and began my research, this was one of the activities that I was most excited to do. It turned out to be one of my favorite activities of the trip and one that I highly recommend.

Jane, who owns the business and led our tour, is a dynamic and interesting person, very knowledgeable about reindeer and equally passionate about them. We got to know her herd of eight during the tour, including their different personalities and quirks.

If you’re looking for a really fun and unique thing to do in Fairbanks, Alaska, don’t miss out on visiting Running Reindeer Ranch. It’s well worth your time!

Running Reindeer Ranch Reservations

You do need to make reservations in advance to visit, and it’s very easy through their website . March is a very busy month for them, so it’s advisable to make reservations well in advance. Don’t miss out on this really fun activity.

At the end of the walk with the reindeer, we went to their house for coffee/tea/hot chocolate and homemade chocolate chip cookies. The cookies are Jane’s daughter’s special recipe, and selling these was a primary way that she raised money to purchase her first reindeer. Jane carries on the tradition by offering them tours.

When to Visit Running Reindeer Ranch

You can visit Running Reindeer Ranch any time of the year. As you can see, we visited during the winter. It’s cold, but they have boots you can borrow, gloves, and some other things to help keep you warm. Once we got walking, it wasn’t too bad!

You can also go during the nice weather in the spring, summer, and fall. You can do walks with the reindeer at any time of year. Of course, the summer is lovely, but they are so cute. There really isn’t a bad time to go.

And here’s another thing I recently learned—you may have heard of goat and puppy yoga. Well, you can even do reindeer yoga ! I may head back during the summer to do yoga with these guys. They are a lot of fun!

What is a Reindeer?

Anyone who has heard of Santa Claus knows about reindeer. As the song goes: “ Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer had a very shiny nose …” Fewer people actually know what a reindeer is, and fewer still have seen one. And no, they don’t have red noses, but they are absolutely adorable.

A reindeer is a type of deer found in the northern regions of the world. They are similar to caribou and are the same genus and species, but caribou are wilder. Caribou are migratory, but reindeer prefer to stay in one location, and as a result, they are very difficult to rehome.

Reindeer were domesticated livestock brought to Alaska from Russia in the late 1800s. They were brought to support the Native Americans, serving as a food source and for labor, pulling sleds, and carrying gear.

This project started with 16 reindeer, and through additional acquisition and breeding, the population grew to a peak of 640,000 in the 1930s. Currently, less than 50,000 reindeer are living in Alaska.

How Running Reindeer Ranch Began

It all started with ten-year-old Robin’s dream to get a horse. However, her mother, Jane, was allergic, so that wasn’t an option. Robin wanted livestock and asked for a goat (“nope”) or sheep (“nope, again.”) They had a series of smaller animals, including rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, dogs, and chickens, but Robin’s interest in owning livestock remained.

Jane suggested an animal better suited to the Arctic climate, so Robin asked for a reindeer. Jane agreed if she raised the funds for one, learned how to care for them, and committed to their care. She admitted that she figured that would be the end of it, but it wasn’t.

Robin’s two-year project began to research how to care for a reindeer. She held several fundraisers to raise money for a reindeer and for its care. She even did a school project devoted to reindeer care.

Robin talked with reindeer owners, found a vet, and continued working to raise money for them. Since reindeer must live in pairs, she had to get two reindeer. She raised the funds for one, and her father bought the second. The family welcomed Ruby and Moon.

That was more than eleven years ago, and now the herd has grown to eight through both acquisition and new births. Jane and her husband, Doug, both used to work full-time and run tours on the side. However, Jane now works at the ranch full-time.

How Running Reindeer Ranch Got Its Name

When the first two reindeer came home, Jane’s daughter spent all of her free time in the pen with them and even slept with them. When the first snowfall hit, she decided to go indoors. The reindeer got out—perhaps seeking their former home, and it was a four-day process trying to get them back!

Not many people owned reindeer, so people knew whom to call when they were spotted around town. Jane and her family would go to get them, and they would run away. They did manage to get them back home, and Running Reindeer Ranch was named.

The Reindeer Herd at Running Reindeer Ranch

The herd of eight reindeer includes Buttercup, Jasper, Rocket, Sapphire, Toby, Margarita, Olive, and Daisy.

Olive and Daisy are breeding females that go to a nearby farm in September for “date night,” as all the males are fixed in the herd. It makes it safer for the people who visit the ranch, as breeding time or rutting season can be hazardous as the males can be quite aggressive.

Sapphire and Toby are the babies. Rocket is a sweet guy who gets picked on a bit by the others and can often be seen running off. Olive and Jasper are a bit bossy and are generally the herd’s leaders.

reindeer farm, reindeer ranch, thing to do in Fairbanks, Alaska, running reindeer ranch

How to Tell Who’s the Boss

The hierarchy of reindeer is based on the size of their antlers. The herd boss is the one with the largest, most impressive antlers. This will change throughout the year as their antlers naturally shed annually, then grow back.

Jane has a collection of her reindeer’s first antlers on display like a proud mom. They are covered with highly vascularized velvet (soft fur) during the summer and are very soft. Their antlers grow in only three months, from May to August. They are very sensitive at this time and should not be touched.

Rutting (breeding) season runs from September to December, at which time the males lose their antlers. Then, a female typically becomes the boss of the herd. In February or March, the females lose their antlers when the daylight is extended.

Pregnant females keep their antlers, which gives them better access to the food supply, and they drop their antlers two days to two weeks after the calf is born. An interesting fact shared is that the baby must eat within two hours, or it will die.

When the reindeer don’t follow the rules for appropriate behavior around people, their antlers are cut. No antlers, no attitude. This is done when they are not sensitive so it doesn’t hurt them, but it does impact their behavior.

Rocket had his antlers cut as he was misbehaving around people, and now he gets picked on by the others. His antlers will grow back next year, and Jane hopes that he will make better decisions so he can keep his antlers.

Your Visit to Running Reindeer Ranch

It’s a nice drive on the west side of Fairbanks through a gorgeous pine forest to get to the ranch, and it’s easy to find. We arrived a few minutes early and were warmly greeted and brought inside.

They have a good amount of gear (including boots, gloves, and scarves) if what you bring isn’t warm enough. Hint: unless you live in the far north areas of the country, it won’t be!

reindeer farm, reindeer ranch, Alaska, running reindeer ranch

The reindeer live inside a fenced area that actually has two fences. There is an inside fence to keep them in and an 8-foot fence to keep them safe from moose. Moose can jump up to 6 feet in the air!

Because they are considered livestock, fencing is required by the government, and there are periodic inspections to ensure the reindeer’s safety and compliance with the law.

The reindeer are trained, but visitors are asked to support the training and reinforce their good behavior. Before we met the reindeer, we were given some instructions.

Reindeer are really cute and generally quite sweet. These reindeer are well-socialized and curious about people. It’s fun to walk among them and to get to know their personalities a bit.

Rules for Safety

  • Always approach from the side with your hands down
  • Don’t touch their antlers.
  • If one of the reindeer runs to you, let them by. They aren’t attacking, but they may see something interesting, or maybe (especially in Rocket’s case!) they are being chased by one of the others.
  • If they start up with another reindeer with their antlers up, then back away, and if they really start going at it, clear the area. They won’t pay as much attention to where people are as they usually would, and others will get involved to take sides and referee. Jane said it doesn’t happen often, but it can.
  • If you see a moose, stop and be very quiet, as they can be aggressive. If it charges, get a tree between you and the moose.

Our visit was wonderful and we didn’t have any issues. Sure, it can be a little unnerving having a reindeer run at you at full throttle, but if you simply step out of their way, they go right on by. They kept us in great company during our walk in the woods, and we got to take lots of pictures with them and of them.

Interesting Facts

It was so much fun to spend time with this herd of reindeer and learn more about them. Especially since I really knew nothing previously. Here are some of the interesting things we learned about reindeer on the tour:

  • Reindeer have no teeth on the top of their jaw and small teeth on the bottom, so there is no toothy grin like you see with Sven in Frozen.
  • They don’t kick (like horses sometimes do) as their eyes are on the side, and they have great peripheral vision.
  • Reindeer walk like a herd and prefer to be together. They do actually herd each other to stay together.
  • To guide them, you can poke them in the butt to keep moving. They may do the same to you as well.
  • Reindeer live 13 – 15 years. However, an intact male bull doesn’t often live past eight as they don’t get enough food when they lose their antlers.

reindeer farm, reindeer ranch, Fairbanks, Alaska

The ranch isn’t only about reindeer! There is a gorgeous and very sweet husky dog named Garnet. His job is to guard the yard and keep the reindeer safe.

He does have a dog house where he often stays, though he is allowed inside as well. Garnet did come inside with us for a bit for petting and belly rubs.

Why Running Reindeer Ranch is a Top Thing to Do in Fairbanks

Running Reindeer Ranch may be the #2 thing to do in Fairbanks, according to TripAdvisor , but it’s number one in my book! It was so much fun to learn about reindeer and to get to meet and hang out with the herd. Where else can you do that?

We went for a short walk and learned all about the reindeer. Amazingly, our time at the ranch passed very quickly, and this desert dweller did not freeze to death!

The reindeer may not fly through the air, even on special holidays, but they really are incredible animals. Getting to know them and their hilarious personalities was a lot of fun.

This is a special activity not available in many parts of the United States and well worth going. And if you need more incentive, the chocolate chip cookies were really good!

Running Reindeer Ranch is located at 1470 Ivans Alley, Fairbanks, AK 99709 . Tours are generally offered once daily, and the time may vary based on the time of year. They last for 2.5 hours and cost between $70 and $110, depending on the time of year.

reindeer farm reindeer

This reindeer farm isn't far outside of Anchorage and the drive is beautiful (of course). We visited as a couple and found it would be appropriate for all ages. The family that owns the farm took us right into the herd and let us feed the deer!

reindeer farm reindeer

This was the cheapest and one of the best things we did on our Alaska trip! We got to feed reindeer, which was so awesome! They are so sweet and love to be fed. Also, got to feed a moose! If you love animals you will love this experience! Can't wait to come back and do this again someday!

reindeer farm moose

The guided tour and chance to feed the reindeer are wonderful opportunities for anyone who likes animals and isn't afraid of them. We even got to "kiss a moose", and they also have a yak and elk in addition to the reindeer. The guide was very informative.

reindeer farm reindeer

On our way through Palmer, we saw the sign for the Reindeer Farm and decided to check it out. It was awesome! We got to meet orphaned animals brought here, such as Rocky the moose, Dolly the wood bison, a yak, and elk. And, of course, reindeer! Getting an opportunity to enter an enclosure to feed reindeer was fantastic and so much fun!

A stroll through the boreal forest is more than just a nature walk. It is a fun adventure when you are joined by a dozen cavorting reindeer friends. Before The Reindeer Walk

Running Reindeer Ranch

Guests are seated near the corral as a wrangler imparts a short history of the ranch and the rules of reindeer interaction. Slowly, reindeer are released from their pens and sidle up to seated guests. With a getting to know you nibble or sniff lets you know they are interested in you too. Their breath tickling your neck is simultaneously fun and spine tingling.

Once two and four legged walkers are well acquainted, the rangers round up everyone for a walk in the woods. It is challenging on the uneven terrain to keep your footing and watch the adorable beasts bounding in the forest. We were fortunate to visit in May, when the babies were big enough to join in. Their charming antics, running in and out of trees playing chase with their little friends was a joy to experience.

When dad joined in the chase — a 500 pound antlered reindeer running full speed through a dense birch forest — we keep our distance. It is a little scary, but a breathtakingly awesome sight. A case of happy, energetic Zoomies is always a joy to behold.

Petting A Reindeer

Running Reindeer Ranch

Always in search of food, the reindeer will stop for a momentary petting. But only for a fleeting moment, then they off on another exuberant reindeer run through the woods.

Visitors are delighted to que up for individual photos with one of the enormous reindeer. Holding the lead of such a large animal is slightly unnerving. We were advised, if he wants to take off, let him go. Excellent advice! I can imagine what it would be like to be dragged, feet flying in the air, by such a powerful and determined animal. They are not a family pet, but herd minded, domesticated farm animals.

As you finish your loop at Running Reindeer Ranch and turn back towards the corral, the reindeer scamper downhill weaving in and out of guests and trees. They are simply joyful creatures who love scamping through their forest home.

Reindeer Walk Through The Boreal Forest

The treasure that is Running Reindeer Ranch began with Ruby and Moon, the first pair of barnyard hosts. They were the beginning of the walking with the reindeer adventure.

The Boreal Forest

Running Reindeer Ranch

According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, “Boreal forest is the largest terrestrial ecosystem on Earth, covering some 11% of land area on the planet.

In Alaska, boreal forest is found in the Interior lands between the Brooks Range in the north and the Coast Range in the south. At higher elevations within the broad range of the boreal forest ecosystem are pockets of alpine tundra vegetation, and along the margins of its range, it intergrades with lowland or arctic tundra.”

This is such a cool experience! I would love to visit Running Reindeer Ranch to see a reindeer and pet one. Thanks for sharing your fun adventure!

Next time I am in Alaska I look forward to visiting Running Reindeer Ranch. They are so cute.

I’ve never been up close to real reindeer! I’d love to visit Running Reindeer Ranch.

The Running Reindeer Ranch is such a unique experience. And interesting to learn that the boreal forest covers so much land on our planet.

This sounds so weird but I would to meet a reindeer! I’ve never met one before in person and I’ve always loved them. Their antlers are gorgeous and look so soft.

I loved seeing the reindeer in Alaska! They are so big and cool!

What a fun activity in Fairbanks! I would love to pet and feed reindeer. I hope to go to Alaska one day, so I will keep this in mind!

What Past Guests Have Said

We felt as if we were in our own home such a comfortable space. Staying in this beautiful private chalet was much more than we expected. Waking up to the Alaskan mountain range right out the window was the cherry on top. […] Meeting the reindeer on the ranch was the perfect ending to our relaxing and amazing stay. If and when we make it back to Alaska this will be on our list to stay at again. Read more

We enjoyed the layout of the house, from the full kitchen to the two bathrooms. The two lovely balconies (one on the second floor one on the third) allowed you to chase the sun, or shade, through out the day and was a great place to drink our morning coffee on. In addition to the house we got to meet all the Reindeer, which made for a very unique experience that not many Air BnB’s can offer. Read more
