Yokohama shore excursions are recommended to visit every month of the year. Experience All the Best Things to Do in Yokohama in One Day! Classic Yokohama Tour!

yokohama harbor tour

Yokohama is just a short train ride away from Tokyo and has some truly special activities that make it worth adding as a stop on your Japan trip! If you're wondering how best to use your time in the city, we recommend taking a classic tour of Yokohama, which hits all of the best spots in one day, including Yokohama Chinatown, the CUPNOODLES Museum, and activities around Yokohama Bay. We went on a tour when visiting Yokohama, and will share our experience in this article!

*This article was sponsored by the Kanto District Transport Bureau, local governments, and local railway companies.

About Yokohama - Japan's Second-Largest City

Despite being Japan's second-largest city by population (with roughly 3.7 million inhabitants as of January, 2020), Yokohama in Kanagawa Prefecture is sometimes overshadowed by its gigantic neighbor Tokyo. However, Yokohama has an interesting history as a major port city and is home to historic buildings, interesting museums, Japan's largest Chinatown, and some truly beautiful nighttime scenery, making it a popular destination among Japanese people. Located just 30 minutes away from Tokyo Station, 30 minutes from Shibuya Station on the Tokyu Toyoko Line, and 30 minutes from Haneda Airport via the Keikyu Line, Yokohama is easily accessible and has many unique experiences to offer that can't be had in Tokyo. From shopping to cultural experiences, it is a fun city to spend time in from morning into the night.

We were told that the tour we participated in would pack many of the most iconic sights and best things to do in Yokohama into one tour, and we were not disappointed! Having a guide to lead us on the most efficient route and give us fascinating tidbits of information about Yokohama that we wouldn't have known otherwise was well worth it, and we finished the tour feeling very satisfied. Read on to see where we went and learn a bit about some of the coolest things to do in Yokohama!

The Tour Begins! Meeting Up at Minatomirai Station

Our tour started at Minatomirai Station on the Minatomirai Line, just two stops from JR Yokohama Station. Minato Mirai is the name for the iconic waterfront area where most of the tour spots are located, and this is the most convenient station for getting there. Our guide was waiting for us right outside of the ticket gates. After a friendly greeting and a brief explanation of the tour and COVID-19 safety precautions (we would be wearing masks for the whole time), we headed right on our way to the first location on the tour: the Landmark Tower.

Take In Yokohama's Gorgeous Scenery from Atop the Yokohama Landmark Tower

The first stop on the tour was the Yokohama Landmark Tower, the tallest building in Yokohama and the 4th-tallest building in Japan after Tokyo Skytree, Tokyo Tower, and Osaka's Abeno Harukas. The bold shape of the 296-meter tower makes it instantly recognizable in photos of Yokyohama's skyline. The tower is home to a shopping mall on the lower floors and the Yokohama Royal Park Hotel on the upper floors. Today, however, our destination was the observation deck on the 69th floor.

The first thing to mention about the observation deck is the blistering speed of the elevator that takes you up, which felt like the fastest that any of us had ever been in. Unlike some other observation towers, there are no windows in the elevator—which is probably for the best as it probably would have been terrifying to look out a window as it reached a speed of 750 meters per minute and went all the way from the second floor to the 69th floor in just 20 seconds! (The speed while descending is the same and is actually the fastest in the world!)

The unobstructed view from the observatory was spectacular. We had seen the views from Tokyo Tower and Tokyo Skytree before, which are both worth seeing. Yokohama Landmark Tower's view offers a few things that the others don't, though, and it just might be the best observatory in Japan because of these. First, being located right on the bay, there are gorgeous unobstructed views of the ocean from the southeastern window and bird's eye views of the historical ships harbored in the port below (one of which we visit later in the tour).

Next, looking from the southwestern window, we could see Mount Fuji peaking up above the surrounding mountains in neighboring Shizuoka Prefecture. This combination of ocean scenery, sprawling metropolis, and Japan's most famous mountain all from one lookout make the Yokohama Landmark Tower one of the coolest views in Japan.

Incidentally, the 65th floor of the building (inside the Yokohama Royal Park Hotel) is home to a tea house called "Kaikoan," which is the highest tea room in all of Japan and offers a unique Japanese tea experience!

Make Your Custom CUP NOODLES at the CUPNOODLES MUSEUM!

After getting a birds-eye view of the area around Yokohama Bay, we headed to our next destination—the CUPNOODLES Museum! The museum is currently taking several measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, including enforcing mask usage and limiting the number of visitors inside, among other things.

Instant noodles are fairly ubiquitous around the world these days, but did you know that they were invented here in Japan? In 1958, the founder of Nissin Food Products, Momofuku Ando, developed the world's first instant noodles which used a new flash-frying technique that Ando invented in a shed in his backyard. The noodles, called "Chicken Ramen," became an instant hit and can still be found in stores today.

8 years later in 1966, Ando visited some buyers at an American supermarket. There, he saw the managers in the office breaking the Chicken Ramen noodles into paper cups, pouring hot water over the noodles, and eating them with a fork. This observation inspired Ando to once again innovate, leading to the invention of the world's first cup noodle product, dubbed "CUP NOODLES" in 1971. CUP NOODLES took instant noodles to a new level worldwide and remains a pioneer of instant noodles today.

There are two CUPNOODLES MUSEUMS in Japan; one in Ikeda City, Osaka Prefecture, the birthplace of instant ramen; and the one here in Yokohama. What can you do at the CUPNOODLES Museum, you might ask? Well, in addition to some unique exhibits such as the Instant Noodles History Cube (with 3,000+ instant noodles packages dating back as far as 1958), a perfect recreation of the shed in Ando's backyard where instant noodles were invented, and six "Creative Thinking Boxes" that are intended to inspire visitors to think outside of the box (ironically)—the most popular attraction is the My CUPNOODLES Factory.

This experience lets you create your very own, one-of-a-kind CUP NOODLES, by adding noodles to a cup that you design yourself and choosing your desired soup flavor from a choice of four flavors and four toppings from a choice of twelve. You can then package it up and put it inside an inflatable, balloon-like satchel to take it home with you for just 400 yen! It's one of the coolest souvenirs you can imagine and is only available at the CUPNOODLES Museum!

There is also a special food attraction called the NOODLES BAZAAR -WORLD NOODLES ROAD-, which serves 8 different pasta dishes that Momofuku Ando encountered during his travels around the world in search of the origins of different types of noodles. However, we chose to continue on to have lunch at our next destination and one of Osaka's most iconic buildings.

Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse

Yokohama's Red Brick Warehouse houses a very unique collection of shops selling various goods such as local crafts and Yokohama souvenirs, and also features many delicious restaurants. Also, being a historical landmark, just walking around inside and looking at the construction of the building was interesting in itself. There are even windows cut into the floor in many places, displaying original building materials and introducing the fascinating history of the building on multi-lingual plaques.

Yokohama was one of Japan's first ports opened to international trade after a long period of isolation, and the warehouses were originally built in 1911 and 1903 as customs houses storing goods being offloaded from overseas trading vessels. Over the last century, the brick buildings went through many turbulent times, including Warehouse No.1 being half-destroyed in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, and being occupied and used as military headquarters for the U.S. troops during the 40s and 50s. Luckily, after the original use of the buildings as a customs house and warehouse ended in the 80s, the building was purchased by the city of Yokohama and incorporated into a construction project called the Minato Mirai 21. During a 10-year renovation, the buildings were reinforced to meet modern building codes while utilizing the original materials and preserving the history of the buildings. On the buildings' exterior, four types of bricks fired to different degrees can be seen, the darkest of which has superior moisture resistance and was used for the foundation and trim around the windows. The warehouses were finally reopened in their current form in 2002 and quickly became a must-visit destination in Yokohama.

In 2007, the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse was recognized for its important contribution to Japan's industrial modernization and gained the designation of "Heritage of Industrial Modernization" by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Finance. Then in 2010, they received the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation.

After browsing through the stores in the multi-level complex, we took a break and had a light lunch of local Yokohama specialties. Much like a food court, there was a shared dining space, meaning each of us could choose the food of our choice from among the countless options. After recharging, it was time to head on to our next destination, the Hikawa Maru—another of Yokohama's icons.

Hikawa Maru - Experience History Aboard a Luxury Passenger Liner

Our next stop on the tour was the Hikawa Maru, a large ship permanently anchored in Yokokohama's harbor. Finished in 1930, the Hikawa Maru used to sail on a route between Yokohama and Seattle before being converted for use in Japanese navy's fleet during World War Two. While most other passenger liners of the time were sunk during the war, the Hikawa Maru alone survived and was again put to use as a passenger liner after the war. Another notable tidbit about the Hikawa Maru is that it carried legendary American actor Charlie Chaplin on his return voyage from Japan, where he visited after the release of his movie "City Lights."

Today, the Hikawa Maru remains a pristine example of a luxury liner passenger ship that has been turned into a floating museum!

It was fascinating to walk down the long metal hallways of the ship and peer into guest rooms frozen in time. Passenger cabins ranged from first to third class, and the common areas for passengers of each class were separate as well. We noticed right away that the difference in accommodation between the classes was quite stark! The third-class cabins featured many sparse bunk beds crammed into a small space with little else. These passengers were restricted as to which areas of the ship they were allowed to visit, and had to use a public bathroom.

In contrast, the first-class cabins were replete with individual beds, a table, and a sink with running hot and cold water. At the time, these cabins went for a premium price of 500 yen for a trip from Yokohama to Seattle (equivalent to 250 U.S. dollars at the time). If you consider that you could buy a house in Japan for 1,000 yen back then, you can get an idea of just how expensive and luxurious a first-class trip on the Hikawa Maru really was.

First-class passengers also had access to the first-class reading lounge and first-class dining room, which served notoriously delicious food the likes of which you would expect from a 5-star restaurant. There was almost too much to see on the ship, but our guide was great at pointing out the most interesting things and giving us extra information that we wouldn't have learned otherwise. Also, this time, we got special access to a typically off-limits area at the back of the ship which was perfect for taking unobstructed photos!

Rather than just taking photos of the Hikawa Maru from down below on the shore, it really was worth it to go inside and see the beautifully-preserved piece of history up close. Walking around the ship made us start to feel a little hungry, which was perfect as our next stop was all about food!

Yokohama Chinatown - A Must-Visit Yokohama Destination for Delicious Food!

The last—but certainly not least—stop on the tour was a short walk from where the Hikawa Maru is anchored. As we got closer to the destination, there was a visible shift in the appearance of many of the surrounding buildings, which featured Chinese-style facades with bright red and gold colors and elaborate carvings.

As we left the busy street and entered the pedestrian-only area of Chinatown, the atmosphere suddenly transformed into a totally different feeling, with red paper lanterns hanging above the street and the mouthwatering smells of various street foods wafting through the air. This is Yokohama's Chinatown, which happens to be the largest in Japan. Why come all the way to Japan to visit Chinatown, you might ask? Well, just like the Chinatowns in other countries, Yokohama's Chinatown is more of a blend of Japanese and Chinese cultures, rather than being just Chinese. The foods have Chinese names, but the flavors are geared towards the taste buds of Japanese people, making them unique to Yokohama Chinatown!

We passed countless shops with so many delicious-looking foods on offer, and some shopkeepers would call out to us as we passed, trying to get us to eat there. It would have been a bit overwhelming if we were on our own. Thankfully, our guide was very familiar with all the foods on offer and gave us some wonderful suggestions of things to try while keeping in mind our food preferences and allergies.

Our first stop was a shop that was apparently somewhat famous, as a TV screen on the ceiling was showing reruns of a Japanese TV show that visited the shop. There were so many different steamed buns for sale, but our guide recommended that we try the "shaopin," which were fried buns filled with two kinds of gooey filling (that I later realized was shark fin).

The first was plain, with a savory yet sweet taste and a wonderfully crispy outside. The second had cheese in it, and I can only compare it to fondue. Both were quite tasty and made us hungry to try more food!

Our next delicacy was something we had seen offered at many different shops, but our guide led us to the shop that he thought served the best version. It was pan fried "xiaolongbao," a soup-filled dumpling that is normally just steamed. These were golden and crispy on one side, and soft on the other, providing an interesting textural contrast. As you bite into it, incredibly flavorful soup instantly flows out, so I recommend eating it in one big bite!

We were starting to get full at this point, but a large piece of fried chicken the size of my face on display at one of the shops we passed was too tempting to pass up. It was on sale as "Taiwan karaage," (karaage is the Japanese word for fried bite-sized meats, usually chicken.

This was far from bite-sized, but the most surprising part was actually the taste! Japanese karaage is usually salty and savory, but this was seasoned with Taiwanese seasonings such as anise, giving it a slightly sweet, enchanting flavor that was absolutely amazing. This ended up being my favorite food that we tried, all though there were so many other things that I would like to try next time when my stomach isn't so full.

Time to Say Goodbye

With full, happy stomachs, we made our way back to the main gate into Chinatown and parted ways with our friendly guide. Although we packed a lot into the tour, it ended up being a very good length of about five and a half hours, and we still had the rest of the afternoon and evening to do as we pleased in Yokohama.

So, what did you think? This has been an introduction of some of the amazing things to do in the port city of Yokohama. If you travel to Japan in the future, definitely consider taking this tour to see the beautiful sights, experience the history, and taste the scrumptious food for yourself!

After Finishing the Tour

The nearby area is a great place to enjoy some nighttime activities. After taking a tour during the daytime, why not take a stroll to see the illuminated city lights at the following locations before calling it a night at one of the nearby hotels?

Whether it's navigating the bustling city streets or trekking through scenic nature trails, I've got you covered. I have extensive experience guiding excursions through mountains, inner city hidden gems, underground music scenes, and scenic day trips in the vicinity of Tokyo. When I'm not guiding, you can catch me indulging in my hobbies of digging into Japanese history, hitting up local shrines, lacing up my running shoes for a jog, scouting out new restaurants, or hitting the trails for a hike. Originally from sunny SoCal, my roots stretch back to both Japanese and Mexican heritage, with a sprinkle of samurai lineage thrown in for good measure. So, if you're ready to dive into the real Japan, away from the tourist traps, join me for an adventure you won't soon forget. Let's do this!

Yokohama Tour Guide - Haruo T.

I live in Yokohama, Kanagawa prefecture. I have a license to teach in high schools and was admitted to the degree of Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language in the University of Birmingham. Until 2015 I had been teaching English at public high schools in Kanagawa for 37 years. During that time, I had some experience of guiding students from overseas through sister-school relationship around Tokyo and Kanagawa. Therefore, I had good command of English with the TOEIC score of 935. As for a tour guide experience I earned the certificate of National Government Licensed Guide-Interpreter in English and since then I have guided tourists to the popular sites around Tokyo, Yokohama, Kamakura and Yokosuka. My guiding focuses on introducing not only Japanese historical and cultural backgrounds but also giving tourists some tips to travel Japan only by themselves, such as how to use trains and subways, find good restaurants, reserve tickets, buy survenier, and speak basic Japanese. In addition, my tour includes opportunities to experience Japanese culture like Zen meditation, ninja performance, visiting anime's location sites based on tourists' request. Besides, by means of my hobbies of writing English Haiku and Waka (traditional Japanese poems) and performing Rakugo (traditional Japanese funny story telling) in English, I can surely entertain tourists during the tour. My moto as a tour guide is let the tourists have a once-in-a-lifetime experience in Japan with my profound, intelligible and interestiog guiding.

My hobbies are making Haiku poems, singing various songs (voice-training for 18 years), playing the folk-guitar, trekking in mountains like Takao and Okutama in the West of Tokyo, visiting museums like in Ueno Park and travelling around Japan to make Haiku poems. Thank you for your attention.

“ Drive To Selected Places un Yokohama ”

Thank you for your review, we are very glad that you had a really good time. we will forward your comments to the driver. And we are looking forward to meeting you next time.

“ Yokohama was better than I expected because of Kaneo ”

Kaneo-San was very professional, resourceful and knowledgeable about the history of the places we visited. He helped us select some of the most interesting and beautiful places to see in Yokohama, one of them was the Sankeien Garden. It is a must see garden with beautiful ponds, different species of cherry blossom trees, historical houses representing different periods in Japan brought from different parts of Japan such as old farm houses, tea ceremonial house and the oldest temple constructed in 1400s brought in from Kyoto.. it is an open air museum ! Last but not least, Kaneo-San went out of his way to help my sister to pick up a purchase she has made from the Red Brick Warehouse! He was so flexible with the itinerary and adjusted it based on the weather. We had such a good time with Kaneo-San and grateful for his guiding. We definitely will recommend him to anyone who wants a competent, kind and reliable guide to show them Yokohama.

Widdy H.

Thank you for sending a really good review. I hope the leather case your sister bought will be a good reminder of this tour.

Customized Tour in Yokohama for Mr. Norman H. - 9 Hours

“ This man does his homework ”

My wife and I booked with Ken at Yokohama pre-cruise and he came prepared with notebook in hand. Despite our impulsive changes on the fly he knew how to compensate venues and was very patient every step of the way. His English was totally understandable as well.

Norman H.

Thank you very much for your wonderful remarks. I hope you found Yokohama is an attractive city where tells you the history of Japan's modernization from the Edo period to the current, and toward the future. Because the city was one of the ports that started trading with other countries from the end of the Edo period, it retains multi-cultural features, Japanese, Western and Chinese as you eye witnessed. Although it was a full-day tour, it was not enough for me to introduce the charms of the city. I am looking forward to having you here again!

Things to do in Yokohama

1. yokohama chinatown (横浜中華街).

The largest Chinatown in Japan, Yokohama’s vibrant and colourful Chinese neighbourhood was developed after Yokohama’s port opened to foreign trade in 1859 which attracted many Chinese people to settle in the city.

yokohama harbor tour

Today you’ll find a large number of food stands lining the narrow streets, plus around 500 restaurants – many of which offer all-you-can-eat deals.

Visiting Chinatown is a real culinary treat and popular food items you must try include panda-man (panda-shaped steamed buns), koshou mochi (Taiwanese black pepper buns), Peking duck wraps , xaio long bao (soup dumplings) and milk tea.

Yokohama chinatown panda bun

There are some examples of amazing traditional Chinese architecture located throughout the neighbourhood such as Kanteibyo Temple , plus four main gates on the edge of Chinatown marking the various entrances (each of which stands for the four different directions).

Yokohama chinatown baked soup dumpling

Although there is a lively atmosphere during the day, we also recommend exploring Chinatown at night when all the lanterns and neon lights are lit up.

We were fortunate enough to visit Yokohama’s Chinatown during Chinese New Year and it was one of our most joyful Japanese experiences, with thousands of lanterns adorning the streets, colourful dancing dragon performances and special ceremonies in the temples.

Oodles of instant noodles! No trip to Yokohama in Japan is complete without a trip to the famous Nissin Cup Noodles Museum in the port area.

An interactive experience inspired by Japan’s iconic original instant noodles, the Cup Noodles Museum is a must visit for any cup noodle converts.

From the design your own instant cup noodle to one of Japan’s most quirky gift-shops and themed food-courts (World Noodles Road), there are many fun things to do (and eat!) in the museum.

3. Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum

If you love your noodles (who doesn’t eh?), also make time to visit Yokohama’s other famous noodle museum – the Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum.

Like the Cup Noodles Museum, the Shin-Yokohama Ramen also offers delicious tasting menus and immersive sets.

Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum

The Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum celebrates various ramen types and noodles from all over Japan and has a small museum.

However the best bit is the vintage food court recreation (complete with skyline) and historic street sets where you’ll find several ramen shops each selling different ramen from various Japanese prefectures and districts.

Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum

The streets are incredible with so much detail including retro shops you can visit plus a vintage ice-cream parlour.

The World’s first Ramen Museum, Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum costs 450 Yen admission per adult and 100 Yen for children (6 to 18 years) and seniors. The ramen dishes in the food court cost extra.

Opening Hours : 11am to 10pm (from 10:30am on Sunday/holidays) Admission fee: Adults (450 yen); Children 6-12 / senior (100 yen); children under 6 (free)

4. Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse

Two former storage warehouses built in the 19th century to store and process goods from all over the world, this prime port location has now become one of Yokohama’s top shopping spots and cultural hubs.

Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse

Yokohama’s historic red brick warehouses have now been lovingly restored into row upon row of restaurants and cute shops, selling everything from kawaii gifts to gachapons (otaku heaven).

As we based ourselves at the APA Yokohama Tower Resort , we had aerial views of the warehouses from our window and headed there most days.

Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse

As well as trendy shops like B-Side Label  or make your own terrarium boutiques(!), we found lots of restaurants to enjoy as well as a huge street food tent outside.

There are lots of events and pop-ups at the Red Brick Warehouse. We visited in January and it had a huge seasonal ice-skating rink that had popped up for Christmas time in Yokohama, Japan.

5. Yokohama Landmark Tower viewing deck

One of our top 10 places to visit in Yokohama has to be the Yokohama Landmark Tower viewing deck located on the 69th floor and the tallest observation deck in Yokohama (once Japan’s tallest building, until it was overtaken in 2014).

Yokohama Landmark Tower

We visited the Yokohama Landmark viewing tour (cost 1000 Yen per person) at dusk and were treated to sunset views of the harbour and the Cosmo 21 Wheel all lit up at night.

Better yet, we were lucky enough to see a clear sunset view of Mount Fuji in the distance; one of our most memorable nights in Japan.

Yokohama Landmark Tower view mount fuji at sunset

The Yokohama Landmark Tower viewing deck is laid out in a circular route which also includes a small lounge area and bar / cafe.

We were lucky enough to grab one of the chairs in the window looking out directly towards Mount Fuji – this really is a million dollar view for just 1000 Yen.

Skip the line – book your Yokohama Marine Tower Observation Floor Ticket here >

Opening Hours : 10am – 9pm Admission fee: Adults (1,000 yen); High school student / senior (800 yen); elementary school student / junior high school student (500 yen); children under 4 (200 yen)

It even has an elevator designed to look like a submarine plus a huge aquarium featuring their main mascot, Donpen the penguin.

If you haven’t heard of this chain before, Don Quijote is Japan’s most famous discount store, and sells thousands of items generally at low prices, from sneakers to stationary, Hello Kitty to Kit Kats (plus more interesting ‘adult sections’).

Sit back in the stone sauna room or enjoy a massage whilst listening to soothing sounds – there is also an onsite restaurant to grab some healthy snacks.

8. Yokohama Air Cabin Cable Cars

Up, up and away with the iconic Yokohama Air Cabin (pictures of it feature in so many tourist brochures and Yokohama souvenirs).

Yokohama Air Cabin Cable Cars

Billed as the world’s first urban gondola, this classy cable-car offers incredible panoramic views of Yokohama and traverses the port and coastal areas – so you’ll see a cityscape and also the sea!

Opened in 2021, the Yokohama Air Cabin is open both by day and in the evening so it is an excellent thing to do in Yokohama at night.

Yokohama Air Cabin Cable Cars

The 600 metre route is quite short as cable cars and air cabins go, running from JR Sakuragicho Station to Unga Park.

However, if you want to arrive at the Cup Noodles Museum or the renowned red brick warehouse in style, jump aboard the Yokohama Air Cabins.

Opening Hours : 10am-9pm Admission fee: One-way Ticket Adults (1,000 yen); children (500 yen); Round-trip Ticket Adults (1,800 yen); children (900 yen)

9. Yokohama Cosmo World

A cute and chintzy waterfront theme park, Cosmo World is a fun thing to do with kids in Yokohama (although it seems to be mainly aimed at the very little ones).

Yokohama Cosmo World

We wandered around Yokohama Cosmo World a couple of times as part of our harbour walks and it was fun to see all the rides, including remote control cars that kids can get it (including a huge Doraemon driving machine).

Yokohama Cosmo World

It isn’t no Ghibli Park but entry to Cosmo World is free with charges for rides (or park passes) – it is quite quiet in the daytime but becomes busy at night with students, teenagers and young romantic couples.

The two more adult attractions here are the roller coaster plus the ferris wheel (more on this in a moment…)

Opening Hours : Monday-Tuesday and Thursday to Friday: 11am-9pm; Saturday and Sunday: 11am-10pm Admission fee: Varies by attraction

A bit like the London Eye in the UK, it was meant to be a temporary observation wheel but so loved by locals that it still lives on to this day.

Spanning 100 metres diameter and with 60 passenger cars, Cosmo Clock also lights up at all hours of the day with some incredible LED light shows.

Opening Hours : Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday: 11am – 8pm (closed Thursday); Saturday and Sunday: 11am – 10pm Admission fee: 900 Yen

11. Yokohama World Porters Mall

A stupendous shopping mall just across the road between the Cup Noodles Museum and Cosmo World, Yokohama World Porters Mall has around 200 stores and restaurants including some novelty items like a rooftop golf course and eating pods.

Yokohama World Porters Mall

There are seven floors of shopping, including themed zones like Unique Casual World on level 3  (stores like Village Vanguard and HMV) and Family Paradise zone on level 2 featuring top toy shops and gachapon machines .

PAC MAN Yokohama World Porters Mall

Level 5 is the Gourmet Zone which includes such Japanese restaurant chains as Seizeriya Italian (so cheap!) and Tonkatsu Katsuraky.

One of the interesting features of Yokohama World Porters Mall is Hawaii Town, which is decked in tiki huts, palm trees plus a Hawaiian food-court. We even saw a Haiwaan hula performance one weekend we visited (not something we expected to see in Yokohama!).

Opening Hours : 10.30am – 9pm

12. Yokohama Bandai Namco Cross Store

14. Yokohama Stadium

If you want to see a baseball game in Japan, Yokohama has one of Japan’s biggest baseball arenas, the Yokohama Stadium which is home to the Yokohama DeNA BayStars.

Baseball is a big hitter in Japan and one of their biggest sports to watch in person or on the television (you’ll see it on the TV in bars and pubs too). The NPB baseball season in Japan typically runs from late March through to October.

Yokohama Stadium was opened in 1978 and seats around 34,000 baseball fans when at capacity.

In the past, it has also hosted international music stars for sell out concerts like Tina Turner, Prince, Michael Jackson and more recently, Japanese idol bands like AKB48.

Brewery Tours and Craft Beer Bars

Yokohama is the perfect place to visit for Japanese craft beer connoisseurs  – it is also home to one of the cheapest brewery tours in Japan costing just 500 Yen including lots of beer.

Often referred to as Japan’s ‘City of Beer’, raise a glass to Yokohama and check out these craft beer bars and late night pubs:

18 Revo Brewing

A ‘review’ of Revo Brewing in Yokohama. Located in the basement area of our hotel ( APA Hotel and Resort Tower Yokohama ), the Revo Brewing taproom serves up a huge range of own-brewed craft beers plus has an industrial interior.

yokohama harbor tour

The Revo Brewing Yokohama bar offers a nice lookout of the cable cars and the Cosmic Clock 21 ferris wheel – we are talking serious brews with views!

The bar has lots of nice flourishes and features like the heart-shaped beer can holder on the wall plus has a huge food menu with beer pairing.

19. Yokohama Brewery

The original Yokohama Brewery was high on our Yokahama craft beer hit-list and we had such a fun night working outr way through the taps.

Located across two floors, Yokohama brewery has a cute and compact brewery bar on the ground floor plus a much bigger restaurant (‘Umayano-Shokutaku’ and seating area on the upper levels).

yokohama harbor tour

The original Yokohama Brewery was established in 1999 and such is the following, it even has a gift-shop and beery merchandise you can take home.

There are around a dozen or so beers on tap at Yokohama Brewery, costing 800 Yen for medium pours or 1100 Yen for large beers (for their core / standard range).

yokohama harbor tour

We liked the old-school chalkboard menu behind the bar so we could choose which craft beers to go for  plus the vasy menu with tasting notes.

The bar staff at Yokohama Brewery were also very warm and welcoming. If you only go to one craft beer brewery in  Japan’s city of beer, make it the original Yokohama Brewery.

Opening Hours : Monday-Thursday 4pm – 10pm; Friday 4pm-11pm; Saturday 11.30am-10pm; Sunday 11.30am-9pm

We had some ‘Baird Company’ whilst at this Yokohama Craft Beer Brewery (but in a good way).

yokohama harbor tour

We recently sat down at the Baird Brewery Yokohama branch in Basamichi to enjoy some Kofune Porter and Suraga Bay Fireworks IPA – at 8% ABV, it was very strong and goes off like a ‘rocket’.

Originally hailing from Numazu, Baird Brewery has around 12 core lines plus BBQ food galore – there are around 9 Baird Brewery taprooms in Japan to work your way through.

23. Streets of Noge in Yokohama at Night

A curious curve of late night bars, secret izakayas and hidden restaurants, walk along Noge’s streets in the daytime and you’ll wonder what all the fuss is about.

However, return at night and Yokohama’s Noge district is a hotbed of hedonstic hang-outs and super cool pubs, many of which overlook the river.

A retro riverside district with vintage drinking places and dimly lit lanterns, half the fun of exploring Noge is just going from bar to bar, drinking beers and savoring yakitori skewers or noshing noodles with the occasional sake.

Motomachi Shopping Street is a peaceful boulevard style shopping street full of cute cafes, stylish fashion shops and restaurant retreats.

Famous brands along Motomachi street include Fukuzo, Star Jewellery and the Tudor style Poppy Menswear (the latter could almost be a British style Japanese Hub Pub , what with its black and white wooden facade!)

29. Nogeyama Park & Nogeyama Zoo

Amazingly, the Nogeyama Zoo is free to visit and is resplendent with animals and creatures such as giraffes, lions and monkeys plus has one of the largest bird avaries we’ve seen.

Our favourite animal at the Nogeyama Zoo was the red panda who just seemed to enjoy the sunshine and wander about in his enclosure all day, striding back and forth.

You can also buy lots of furry creatures of the fluffy kind (teddies and plushies) in the zoo gift-shop.

Given the hillside setting, the views from the top are stunning and we even caught a glimpse of Mount Fuji from a nearby footbridge on our way into the zoo.

As well as the animal park, there are several lawns and gardens to explore around Nogeyama Park plus some free lookout / observation towers.

30. Yokohama Temples and Shrines

There is a multitude of temples and shrines to explore in Yokohama, but perhaps two of Yokohama’s finest (Taoist) temples can be found downtown, in Chinatown.

The two main Chinese temples in Chinatown are the Mazu Miao temple and the Kuan Ti Miao temple.

We were lucky enough to visit both during Chinese New Year and they were a flurry of activity, festooned with red lanterns and colourful banners – both temples were free to visit and packed with workshippers.

Other renowned Buddhist temples include Shomyo Temple , Myokoji Temple  and the three storey pagoda Tomyoji temple .

Minato Mirai ferris wheel by night in Yokohama, Japan

Yokohama is a port city less than 30 minutes from Tokyo by train that has grown to become a major gateway to Japan. The port city has a history of trade and foreign influences, and there are many interesting spots to visit. What to do if you have a few hours in Yokohama?

Yokohama Akarenga

History of Yokohama

It is towards the end of the Edo Period (1603-1867), during which Japan maintained a policy of self-isolation. Yokohama’s port was one of the first to be opened to foreign trade in 1859. Consequently, Yokohama quickly grew from a small fishing village into one of Japan’s major cities. There is a number of modern buildings as well as buildings with a more traditional design. Until today, Yokohama has one of the world’s largest Chinatowns. And the city also preserves some former Western residences in the Yamate international district.

It was only a small fishing village when in 1854 Matthew C. Perry arrived with his fleet of U.S. naval warships. He arrived at the harbor of the neighboring town of Kanagawa. Five years later Kanagawa was designated Japan’s first port under the Harris Treaty (1858) where foreigners could reside and trade.

However, Kanagawa was an important post station on the Tōkaidō, Japan’s main east-west road at the time. Moreover, the Japanese government did not want foreigners to have access to it. Instead, it established the port at Yokohama, which was isolated from the highway and had a deepwater harbor superior to the harbor in Kanagawa.

The area flourished with the growth of Japan’s foreign trade and shipping after the Meiji Restoration (1868), and in 1889 the city of Yokohama was established through the amalgamation of Kanagawa and Yokohama. Basic municipal services (water, electricity , and gas) were installed beginning in the late 1880s. The city grew rapidly, becoming one of the country’s major ports and trading centers.

Modern Yokohama

Yokohama was the first harbor city introduced to the world as the entrance to Japan. Since its port opened, the people in Yokohama has been vigorously learning about new cultures, so it is not a surprise that it was through Yokohama that many first-time-ever things ranging from food to sports were introduced to Japan, which makes Yokohama the birthplace of Japan’s modern culture.

The Yokohamaites, referred to as Hamakko in Japanese, have been very capable of enjoying life and possess a great willingness to adopt whatever new that is good. This tradition of the Hamakko that was cultivated long ago has been incorporated into the present fashionable and sophisticated streetscape.

In 1945, the bombing by the USA became more intense and the whole city of Yokohama was burnt to the ground by repeated bombings. Especially in the air raid on May 29, when a total of 14,157 died, were injured, or went missing, 79,017 houses were destroyed, and 42 percent of the city area was burnt to ashes. The population, which at the end of the war was some three-fifths of what it had been in 1943, grew steadily in the early postwar years. Population growth began increasing at a faster rate after 1960. And by 1980 the city had surpassed Osaka to become the second-largest city in Japan.

Here are the ships you can expect to see at Harborfest 2024

T he 48th annual Norfolk Harborfest kicks off Friday at Town Point Park along the Downtown Norfolk waterfront, the city's annual celebration of the maritime and Naval community that makes Hampton Roads so special.

Part of the festival is the Parade of Sail, where a fleet of tall ships, character vessels, sleek power cruisers, sailing craft, antique and classic wooden boats, military vessels, tugs, and more will make its way down the Elizabeth River toward Town Point Park.

RELATED: What to know about Harborfest 2024 in Norfolk

You'll be able to catch the parade on-air on 13News Now or via live stream on 13News Now+ on Friday starting at noon.

Also, ships will be open for public tours from around 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, and from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The tours will be free and open to the public.

RELATED: Here are the Norfolk roads closing for Harborfest 2024

Here's a look at this year's lineup:

American Rover

Owned and operated by Rover Marine, the American Rover is a 135’ 3-masted topsail schooner.  It sails daily from The Waterside Marina in Downtown Norfolk, and for Harborfest it will be docked on the wave screen behind the Waterside Marina this weekend for its harbor cruises and public tours.

19th-century cargo schooners inspired her design, yet she possesses the modern amenities that assure a comfortable cruise: spacious topside decks with seating, climate-controlled below-deck cocktail lounges, clean restrooms, and a ship’s store offering souvenirs, snacks, sandwiches, and beverages.

Kalmar Nyckel

The tall ship Kalmar Nyckel serves as a floating classroom and an inspirational platform for educational outreach and is run by the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation offering sea- and land-based learning and recreational experiences.

The Kalmar Nyckel Foundation is a non-profit educational organization with a mission of “preserving and promoting the cultural and maritime heritage of Delaware and the Delaware Valley for the education and enrichment of all.”  The Foundation is a volunteer-based organization that built, owns, and operates the Tall Ship of Delaware, Kalmar Nyckel.

The original Kalmar Nyckel was one of America’s pioneering colonial ships, a Mayflower of the Delaware Valley, yet her remarkable story has never been widely told.

The namesake of Kalmar Nyckel served as Governor Peter Minuit’s flagship for the 1638 expedition that founded the colony of New Sweden, establishing the first permanent European settlement in the Delaware Valley, Fort Christina, in present-day Wilmington, Delaware.  She would make a total of four roundtrip crossings of the Atlantic, more than any other documented ship of the American colonial era.

The historical ship was a new type of gun-armed merchant vessel called a Dutch Pinnace. The Dutch built her in Amsterdam in about the year 1625 and later purchased it in 1629 by a Swedish consortium to serve as an auxiliary warship for the Swedish navy, which she did until her decommissioning in 1651 — except for the years from 1637 to 1644 when she sailed the Atlantic for the New Sweden Company.

An exceptional ship with a long and remarkable career, she was sold to a private merchant after being decommissioned from the Navy.  No completely definitive records have been uncovered as of yet, but Kalmar Nyckel was probably resold to the Dutch navy as an escort vessel and sunk in the North Sea while fighting for the Dutch in a war against the English in 1652.

Impossible Dream

The Impossible Dream is a catamaran that is uniquely designed as a universally accessible vessel. The Impossible Dream works outside of just a physical vessel as an organization dedicated to the inclusion of marginalized populations into the maritime community, mainly those who are disabled. They offer virtual explorations, experiences, and education for those who are unable to physically visit the Impossible Dream.

This all-carbon-fiber, fast cruising yacht is the world’s only catamaran built from the ground up to be fully universally accessible.

This vessel can be independently and easily handled by wheelchair users. All sail handling, docking, anchoring and maintenance can be performed by wheelchair users.

Designer Nic Bailey’s vision came to fruition in 2002 with an LOA of 58 feet and a 27-foot beam. It has 4 cabins. All areas can be accessed by wheelchair including below deck by using an internal lift in each hull.

A.J. Meerwald

The A.J. Meerwald is a restored oyster dredging schooner, originally launched almost 100 years ago! She was one of hundreds of schooners built along South Jersey’s Bayshore before the Great Depression and the decline of the shipbuilding industry. Today A.J. Meerwald functions as a traveling classroom and vehicle to enjoy waterways.

After a 3-year project in 1995, she was fully restored and added to the National Register of Historic Places, leading to Governor Whitman designating her as New Jersey’s official tall ship in 1998.

The A.J. Meerwald is a wooden construction with a white oak hull and an 85-foot cedar deck. It displays over 3,500 sq feet (about the area of a tennis court) of sails and is supported by a John Deer engine with 230 HP.

Schooner Virginia

The Schooner Virginia is a reproduction of the last all-sail vessel built for the Virginia Pilot Association. The original ship sailed for the pilots from 1917-1926, training apprentice pilots in seamanship and navigation, and even served as a pilot vessel during World War I.

Today’s wooden craft was commissioned by the Virginia Maritime Heritage Foundation in 2005 and was sold to the Nauticus Foundation in 2016. Virginia is 126 feet long, has a beam of 23 feet, and a draft of 12 feet. She carries over 6,500 square feet of canvas and is a gaff topsail schooner.

The Schooner Virginia is docked at Nauticus and serves Nauticus programming as a platform for sail training and teaching maritime sciences, history, teamwork, and leadership to the youth of Hampton Roads. Youth programs feature dockside education, day trips, and overnight adventures.

A dedicated group of volunteer and professional crew members maintain and operate the ship throughout the year. New volunteers are welcome. No experience is necessary as they provide training and instruction in tall ship sailing and vessel maintenance.

The Schooner Virginia will be dockside at Otter Berth starting at 3 p.m. Friday and throughout the festival, available for public visitation.

USACE Ewell

The US Army Corp – Ewell was commissioned in January of 2018 and is homeported at the Norfolk District of the US Army Corp of Engineers. This survey vessel is a 61-foot foil-assisted catamaran outfitted with an aluminum hull, stainless steel hydrofoil, and the latest multibeam SONAR technology. The Ewell proudly displays a crane capable of lifting 4,500 pounds.

The ship serves both as a survey vessel and removes debris from Norfolk Waterways. With a top-end speed of more than 34 knots, the 1,970 horsepower twin-engine, jet-propelled Ewell is the fastest vessel in the district’s fleet.

Norfolk Rebel

The Tugatine “Norfolk Rebel” is a sail-assisted workboat designed for towing and salvage.

Built by Howoy Bailey and designed by Merritt Walter, her unique design was commissioned to use wind power to help save fuel.  This idea was created during the 1920s during the gas shortage. She sometimes works as an escort vessel for tall ships and participates in Opsail 2000 festivities.

In 1984 she circumnavigated Virginia and was featured at the New Orleans World’s Fair.

Her first Captain, Lane Briggs was one of the Founding Fathers of Harborfest, who sadly passed away in 2005. Capt. Briggs worked tirelessly to promote sail training and promote the “Harbor of Hospitality.” Today his sons Steve and Jesse are carrying on with this tradition.

Rainbow Chaser

Rainbow Chaser is a 40’ Chesapeake Bay Deadrise that has been coming to Harborfest for more than 25 years.  She is powered by a Volvo Penta diesel engine and is the fastest wooden deadrise on the Chesapeake Bay, winning workboat racing events since 2006.  Her captain is Shannon Gay.

Spirit of Norfolk (Mount Vernon)

Since 1978, the Spirit has delivered a vibrant and unique combination of dining, dancing, entertainment, and breathtaking views. With a capacity of 400, the Spirit of Norfolk is perfect for cruising year-round from The Waterside in Downtown Norfolk, City Cruises Norfolk offers Lunch, Brunch, Dinner, Cocktail, Moonlight Cruises, and much more!

Victory Rover

Victory Rover is a 95-foot vessel that once served as a crew and supply boat for offshore oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico.  In 2001, Victory Rover was converted into a sightseeing passenger boat by Rover Marine Co.  She has 3 Detroit V1271 diesel engines, triple screw, with 1,350 HP, which allows her to cruise at 20mph.

US Coast Guard Cutter Sailfish

The USCG Cutter Sailfish is an 87-foot-long patrol vessel homeported in Little Creek. It is a Coastal Patrol Boat that is manned by highly skilled sailors, responding to emergencies along the coast.

You may ask why are Coast Guard ships called cutters? Government agencies use the term “Cutter” for vessels employed in patrolling their territorial waters and other enforcement activities. This terminology is derived from the sailing cutters which had this sort of role from the 18th century to the end of the 19th century.

USS Gonzalez (DDG 66)

Rounding out this impressive example of maritime history is the USS Gonzalez (DDG 66). The U.S. Navy destroyer proudly serves “Beyond the Call” in the ship’s namesake of SGT Alfredo Gonzalez, who served from 1965 and was mortally wounded in 1968 while fighting in the Vietnam War.

Within his 3 years of service, he was awarded the Medal of Honor, the Purple Heart, the Presidential Unit Citation, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with star, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with palm, the Military Merit Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal for his bravery, leadership and heroism.

Today the USS Gonzalez goes “Beyond the Call” in honor of its namesake. This Arleigh Burke Class Destroy spans over 500 feet in length and 66 feet in breadth.

It is capable of traveling more than 30 knots and is equipped with state-of-the-art weaponry such as an AEGIS Weapons System, Two MK 41 Vertical Launching Systems, 14 triple torpedo tubes, and Mk 36 MOD 12 Decoy launching system. It also utilizes a high-tech surface USW Combat System Suit, hull-mounted surface search radar, Sonobuoy Sensor Processing System, and Electronic Warfare system.

As of today, Commander Kartina Stegner serves as commanding officer with Commander Ashley Carline as Executive Officer and Master Chief Terry Vines by their side.
