Sunshine Tour confirms BUMPER schedule for 2022

The Sunshine Tour has announced a bold start to 2022 with a schedule including two new tournaments co-sanctioned with the DP World Tour.

The Sunshine Tour has announced a bold start to 2022 with a schedule including two new tournaments co-sanctioned with the DP World Tour, and seven tournaments co-sanctioned with the Challenge Tour including a new event in Tanzania.

The opening four months of the new year will see South Africa’s professional golfers competing for almost R80 million in total tournament prize money in what is an extremely strong and lucrative start to the Sunshine Tour season.

“A tremendous amount of work together with the ongoing support of our chairperson Mr Johann Rupert, our Executive Director Selwyn Nathan, our Board of Directors, our partners and sponsors has allowed us to announce what we believe is a fabulous Sunshine Tour schedule to start the year with,” said Thomas Abt, Commissioner of the Sunshine Tour.

“We are delighted to be able to grow our relationship with the DP World Tour and the Challenge Tour with the offering of even more opportunities for our member professionals to secure a place on an international tour while playing at home. This significantly enhances what has always been our global pathway to success for our professionals.

“We also have several new sponsors on board that have recognised the value professional golf offers. I’d also like to pay tribute to our existing sponsors – Dimension Data, Bain’s Whisky, City of Cape Town, the Limpopo Tourism Authority, Vodacom and the Kit Kat Group – many of whom have been with us for a very long time and who continue to give us the means to build on a Sunshine Tour brand that is globally recognised as a place of opportunity and reflective of our slogan that ‘GreatnessBeginsHere’.”

The Sunshine Tour’s 2022 schedule tees off in the final week in January with the Vodacom Origins of Golf Final at the Gary Player Country Club in Sun City.

February, March and April include the Challenge Tour’s Southern African Swing, which has now grown from three tournaments to seven.

The first new event is the Jonsson Workwear Open, which will be played at both Durban Country Club and Mt Edgecombe Country Club.

“Creating opportunities for passionate people to perform at their peak is the common thread that ties the Sunshine Tour to Jonsson Workwear. We are proud to introduce the Jonsson Workwear Open, a flagship event that will support our continuous efforts in building Durban as a city and KwaZulu-Natal as a region of endless possibilities,” said Nick Jonsson, Chairman and CEO of Jonsson Workwear.

This is followed by the Mangaung Open at both Bloemfontein Golf Club and Schoeman Park Golf Club.

The SDC Open also joins the Challenge Tour co-sanctioned schedule and will be played at the Zebula Golf Estate & Spa and Elements Private Golf Reserve in Limpopo.

The Tour then branches out into Tanzania for the first time for the new Mount Kilimanjaro Klassic at the Kilimanjaro Golf & Wildlife Estate in Tanzania.

These new Challenge Tour events join the existing Dimension Data Pro-Am (Fancourt), Bain’s Whisky Cape Town Open (Royal Cape Golf Club and Rondebosch Golf Club), and the Limpopo Championship (Euphoria Golf & Lifestyle Estate and Koro Creek Bushveld Estate).

March features the two new tournaments co-sanctioned with the DP World Tour, the $1.5 million Pecanwood Classic at the Pecanwood Golf Estate and the $1.5 million Steyn City Championship at Steyn City.

This takes to a total of five the number of tournaments the Sunshine Tour hosts on the DP World Tour, adding to the Joburg Open, South African Open and Alfred Dunhill Championship.

The Kit Kat Group Pro-Am (Irene Country Club), Players Championship (Dainfern Golf Estate) and Tour Championship (Serengeti Estates) round off the new schedule.

And the country’s next generation of stars will have the opportunity to play their way onto the Sunshine Tour through either the Sunshine Tour Qualifying School or the Vusi Ngubeni Tournament for transformation golfers.

Who Is Sebastian Korda's Girlfriend? All About Ivana Nedvěd

Sebastian Korda has consistently risen in the rankings since turning pro in 2018, and his girlfriend, Ivana Nedvěd, has been along for much of the journey.

After Korda and Nedvěd debuted their relationship on social media in 2021, the tennis star opened up about their similar backgrounds. Both have famous Czech athletes as parents: Korda’s father is former tennis professional and Grand Slam champion Petr Korda, and his mother is Olympian tennis player Regina Rajchrtová.

Meanwhile, Nedvěd’s father is former professional soccer star Pavel Nedvěd, whose nearly two-decade career solidified him as one of the country's legends.

The younger Korda is carving out a successful career, with a singles and doubles title on the ATP tour. In terms of their relationship, he believes Nedvěd’s upbringing in a famous sports family has been helpful.

“The best thing is she understands sports which is great,” Korda explained in an interview with Daily Express in 2024. “She understands how difficult it is to be a professional athlete and that there’s a lot of sacrifices."

He continued, “She’s an amazing partner to have and I’m very lucky to have someone that just understands it and always is trying to be there and just always being there is probably the biggest key.”

So who is Sebastian Korda’s girlfriend? Here's everything to know about Ivana Nedvěd and her relationship with the tennis star.

She is a marketing graduate

While Nedvěd isn't a professional athlete like Korda, she's still involved in the industry in a different way.

According to her LinkedIn profile , Nedvěd graduated from Glion Institute of Higher Education with a bachelor’s degree in events, sport and entertainment with a specialization in luxury brand management.

She also holds a master's in international marketing from King’s College and has worked with major brands, including Alpha Romeo and the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI). Currently, she's an intern at Condé Nast Italia.

She has a large following

Nedvěd has a significant social media presence with nearly 82,000 Instagram followers . Her content mainly covers topics related to fashion , food and travel .

Nedvěd also shares posts of her spending time with Korda whenever he's not practicing or competing on the tennis court.

In honor of his birthday in 2023, she wrote a heartfelt message alongside a selfie of them in Paris.

"Happiest birthday to my amore! ❤️," she captioned it. "May this next trip around the sun 🌞 be your best one yet ✨🎂🌎💌🍀❤️."

She has a famous father

Nedvěd is the daughter of former Czech soccer legend Pavel.

Widely considered one of the greatest players in Czech Republic history, Pavel won with premier Italian clubs Lazio and Juventus. He also amassed major accolades like the Ballon d'Or in 2003, the Golden Foot award in 2004, six Golden Balls and four Czech Footballer of the Year titles.

Similarly, Korda's dad, Petr, is a Czech former professional tennis player who won 10 singles titles and 10 doubles titles on the ATP tour. He famously won the Australian Open in 1998 in straight sets and peaked at No. 2 in the world.

Korda's mom is Regina Rajchrtová, another Czech former pro tennis player who won a doubles title on the 1989 WTA tour. Away from the soccer field and tennis court, Sebastian’s older sisters, Jessica and Nelly , are professional golfers on the LGPA tour. Most recently, Nelly also won gold in golf at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Nedvěd is supportive of Korda’s tennis career

The 2023 Australian Open was special for the Korda family: It was 25 years since Petr won his only Grand Slam at the same tournament.

Korda also made an impressive run, defeating 2022 Australian Open runner-up Daniil Medvedev in a second-round upset. After the match, cameras captured an emotional Nedvěd in the stands celebrating his victory.

She and Korda travel together frequently

Professional tennis players spend a significant amount of time traveling due to the global nature of the tour, with events on different continents and across various countries throughout the year.

Nedvěd is never far from Korda’s side and often shares photos from multiple tournaments. Her social media feeds also feature several posts of her and Korda during downtime or on vacation from locations like Paris, Turin, Prague, Rome, Melbourne and Monaco.

Speaking to Daily Express in 2024, Korda expressed how much he enjoys their getaways.

“I’m very appreciative whenever she comes and we have a lot of fun together," he said. "She takes my mind off of tennis, and we have fun and can relax and go sightseeing a little bit and just be normal in a way."

Korda added, “When you’re outside the tennis courts, it’s massive for any athlete just to take their mind off of things and just be fresh and ready to go whenever you go back out there and practice.”

She is close to her brother

Nedvěd has constantly referred to her brother, Pavel Nedvěd Jr. , as her twin and the two have leaned on each other through different stages of their lives.

Nedvěd was in attendance when her sibling graduated with a degree in sport management from Escuela Universitaria Real Madrid in 2024. He refers to her as his “ everyday sunshine ,” and she also posts sweet messages dedicated to him.

“Happy birthday to the best part of me 🔒❤️ hope we will forever laugh like this, even though we had no teeth.😂I miss you @pavelnedvedjr.,” she wrote on Instagram in 2022.

Tommy Fleetwood is thrilled to be back in South Africa for the defence of his Nedbank Golf Challenge title – three years on from joining a glittering list of winners.

The Englishman arrived at Gary Player Country Club in November 2019 without a win in nearly two years but reeled in a six shot deficit on his way to a thrilling play-off victory against Swede Marcus Kinhult. 

In doing so, he emulated some of golf’s greatest names including Seve Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer, Sir Nick Faldo and three-time winner Ernie Els.  

‘Africa’s Major’ is celebrating its milestone 40th anniversary this week, after the Covid-19 pandemic meant the event was not played in 2020 or 2021, and Fleetwood is relishing the honour of teeing it up in Sun City as the defending champion. 

“This is a very special event for me,” he said.

“I grew up watching this event with my dad every year. I love the history behind it and the winners.

“When you walk down the ninth hole on the left and you see all the winners from all the years on that walkway, I often thought it would be great to add my name on there.”

Fleetwood’s victory last time out was his fifth DP World Tour triumph, and the World Number 25 has finished no worse than a tie for 21st in his five previous visits. 

He currently sits 13th in the DP World Tour Rankings in partnership with Rolex ahead of the penultimate event of the 2022 season, with reason for optimism that he can end his three-year winless run.

“To get that win was very cool,” he said. “And now I’ve defended it longer than anybody. I think we’re all excited to come back.”

This year the Nedbank Golf Challenge, part of the DP World Tour schedule since 2013, has a field of the top 60 available players from the DP World Tour Rankings in Partnership, the winner of last season's Sunshine Tour Order of Merit and five invites. 

“I love the game in this country and how popular golf is over here,” he added. “I’ve always enjoyed playing out here. 

“I’m a massive believer in the game of golf and the good it does and how happy it makes people. I feel very at home here in South Africa.”
