Golf’s DP World Tour (formerly the European Tour) has announced its schedule for the 2023 season, featuring a record prize fund and a $150,000 payout to golfers playing 15 events or more.

The schedule for the new season includes at least 39 tournaments to be played in 26 countries, starting with the jointly sanctioned Australian PGA Championship in Brisbane and Joburg Open in South Africa, both beginning on November 24.

The season will conclude with the DP World Tour Championships in Dubai from November 17 to 20 next year.

Players will compete for an overall prize fund of $144.2 million across the tournaments outside the Major Championships and WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play. There will also be an increased bonus pool of $6 million for the leading eight players on the DP World Tour Rankings through the circuit’s partnership with luxury watch brand Rolex.

In the latest response to the threat of the lucrative rebel LIV Golf Series, golfers on the circuit will also receive a guaranteed $150,000 under the tour’s new ‘Earnings Assurance Program’ if they play a minimum of 15 events.

The US-based PGA Tour announced a similar program in August, with rookies guaranteed $500,000.

Players that placed last in each of the Saudi-backed LIV Golf events this season earned $120,000, while US star Dustin Johnson earned more than $35 million in individual and team prize money.

Keith Pelly, DP World Tour chief executive, said: “For us to be able to offer our members record prize funds and enhanced earning opportunities is massive, particularly when global economies are still feeling the effects of the pandemic and with the new challenge of rising inflation significantly putting pressure on costs in all facets of our business.

“Our overall prize fund for the 2023 season represents $50 million more than 2021 and also underlines the strength of our partnership with the PGA Tour, who are working with us to drive revenue and a long-term growth plan.

“One of the many benefits we have been able to introduce because of this partnership is the new Earnings Assurance Program, similar to what they already have on the PGA Tour.

“I have always believed that it is an incredible accomplishment for any professional golfer to simply gain their playing rights on the DP World Tour and this new initiative recognizes and rewards that achievement.

“Although we will never lose the magic of the meritocracy and purity of a performance-based structure, this now offers certainty of income to those players who have made it to the pinnacle of the professional game in Europe.”

The record prize fund, increased bonus pool, and Earnings Assurance Program were made through the DP World Tour’s operational joint venture partnership with the PGA Tour.

In June, the DP World Tour and PGA Tour announced an expanded and strengthened strategic alliance through a new 13-year operational joint venture partnership. That tie-up, which will run through 2025, builds on the existing alliance between the two tours that was unveiled in November 2020.

The first four Rolex Series events of 2023 have seen their prize purses rise, with the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, Dubai Desert Classic, Genesis Scottish Open, and BMW PGA Championship all increasing from $8 million to $9 million next year.

New tournaments in Asia have also been added to the schedule, with events taking place in Singapore (February 9 to 12), Thailand (February 16 to 19), Japan (April 20 to 23), and South Korea (April 27 to 30).

A three-week summer break has also been scheduled following the 151 st Open Championship and Barracuda Championship (both July 20 to 23), introduced after player feedback.

Further details about the autumn events will be announced soon.

Prize money for the Race to Dubai and DP World Tour Championship totals more than $16m

Rory McIlroy has already sewn up the Race to Dubai – European golf’s annual order of merit – again but there is plenty of prize money to play for at its finale, the DP World Tour Championship, this week.

The tournament itself, which features the top 50 players on the DP World Tour this season, has a first prize of $3m, more than the winner’s payout at the Masters.

And there is an added incentive in the shape of an increased $6m bonus pool for the players who finish in the top 10 of the Race to Dubai standings.

DP World Tour Championship prize money

The 2023 DP World Tour Championship is the most lucrative event belonging only to the European circuit and has total prize money of $10.5m, a five per cent increase on last year.

First place in the tournament, which was won by Jon Rahm for the third time last year, receives $3m – more than the Masters champion receives and equal to the winners’ cheque at the Open Championship.

Only four events – the Players’ Championship and Tour Championship on the PGA Tour, and two Majors, the US Open and US PGA Championship – offer more prize money to their champions.

Race To Dubai bonus pool

The Race to Dubai bonus pool boosts the prize money on offer in Dubai this weekend by $6m, up from $5m last year.

Last year McIlroy also topped the standings and pocketed a $2m share.

6 Things To Know About The 2024 DP World Tour Schedule

The 2024 DP World Tour schedule has been released, and there are some big changes

  • Sign up to Golf Monthly Newsletter Newsletter

The DP World Tour Flag

The DP World Tour has released its schedule for the 2024 season. Between November 2023 and November 2024, there will be a minimum of 44 events across 24 countries and five continents.

However, while there are plenty of familiar aspects in the schedule, there are significant changes in other areas. Here are some of the biggest talking points of the 2024 DP World Tour schedule.

1. A Record Prize Fund

Shane Lowry won one of the 2022 Rolex Series events, the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth

In 2023, the overall prize fund reached $144.2m, but that has been increased to a record $148.5m for the 2024 season.

That includes purses of $9m for four of the five Rolex Series events – the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, Genesis Scottish Open, BMW PGA Championship and Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship – and a $10m purse for the season-closing DP World Tour Championship at the Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai.

2. Two New Tournaments

The Dubai Invitational will come to Dubai Creek Golf Club in January

As well as the Hero Dubai Desert Classic and DP World Tour Championship, a third tournament will be held in Dubai with a new event, the Dubai Invitational, which will be held at Dubai Creek Golf Club from 11-14 January.

That’s not the only new event in the schedule either. The Tour will also visit Bahrain for the Bahrain Championship at Royal Golf Club between 1 and 4 February.

3. An Old Event Returns To The Schedule

Mikko Korhonen won the Volvo China Open in 2019, when it was most recently held on the DP World Tour

An event that was last seen on the DP World Tour in 2019 makes a comeback in 2024.

The Volvo China Open was co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour (then the European Tour) from 2004 to 2019 with winners including Steven Dodd, Paul Casey and 2019 victor Mikko Korhonen. It was played exclusively on the China Tour in 2020 and 2021, though it wasn’t held at all in 2022 or 2023.

However, it has now been revived and will take place at Hidden Grace Golf Club in Shenzhen between 2 and 5 May.

4. A New Place In The Schedule For The Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship

Victor Perez with the trophy after winning the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship at Yas Links

The Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship will now be part of the season-ending DP World Tour Playoffs

The Rolex Series event at Yas Links in the United Arab Emirates has long been held in January, but not in 2024.

Instead the tournament, which was won in 2023 by Victor Perez , has moved to November, where it will form one of two DP World Tour Playoffs to close the season. The top 50 from the 70-player field will progress to the DP World Tour Championship.

5. All Change For Race To Dubai

Rory McIlroy with the Harry Vardon trophy after winning the Race To Dubai

Rory McIlroy won the 2022 Race To Dubai

The season-long Race to Dubai, which in 2022 saw Rory McIlroy claim the Harry Vardon Trophy, will be divided into three distinct stages for the 2024 season.

The season begins with a phase of five new Global Swings . This marks by far the longest of the three phases, and will take place between November 2023 and August 2024.

Image explaining the new DP World Tour schedule

The DP World Tour schedule will have distinct phases next season

The Opening Swing will be played between November and December 2023, beginning with the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship and Joburg Open before further tournaments in Africa and Australia, concluding with the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open.

Next, it’s the International Swing between January and March, with seven tournaments across the Middle East and Africa, including the first of the season’s Rolex Series events, the Hero Dubai Desert Classic in January.

From mid-March, the Asian Swing begins as the Tour moves to the far east for five more events.

After the PGA Championship, the European Swing begins with May’s Soudal Open and finishes with July’s BMW International Open in Germany.

The Closing Swing then runs through the remainder of July starting with the Genesis Scottish Open and finishing with the Danish Golf Championship at the end of August.

Following the conclusion of the Global Swing, the Back 9 begins. That phases comprises nine tournaments between late August and the end of October, including the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth .

The final phase is the DP World Tour Playoffs, with the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship held before the season-closing DP World Tour Championship.

6. Incentives In Each Of The Three Phases

Jon Rahm after winning the 2022 DP World Tour Championship in Dubai

Jon Rahm won the 2022 DP World Tour Championship in Dubai

As well as the regular purses for its tournaments, the Global Swings phase includes some added financial incentives.

Swing Champions from each of the five swings will earn $200,000 from an additional $1m bonus pool.

The leading 10 players in the Race To Dubai Rankings at the end of all five Global Swings phases will then receive bonuses from another $1m pool.

It’s not just financially where the leading players in the Global Swings phase are set to benefit, either. The winner of each of the five Global Swings phases also gains entry to the next scheduled Rolex Series event, while they also qualify for each event in the Back 9 phase.

On that subject, Back 9 events will offer increased Race To Dubai points. Also, the leading 15 non-members from the top 70 on the FedEx Cup will be eligible for its events, while the top 110 players on the Race To Dubai rankings at the end of the Back 9 phase will earn DP World Tour cards for 2025. The top 70 reach the DP World Tour Playoffs.

Finally, the DP World Tour Playoffs phase feature two tournaments – the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and DP World Tour Championship.

The top 50 in the first tournament making it through to the season closer. The top 10 in the DP World Tour Championship will earn PGA Tour cards for 2025, while they will also share a $6m Race To Dubai bonus pool.

The top player is crowned Race To Dubai Champion.

Svetozar Pavlović

The DP World Tour Championship’s 15th edition is taking place at the Earth Course of Jumeirah Golf Estates , marking the end of the season-long Race to Dubai. The championship culminates a year-long battle among the best golfers in the world, with the winner crowned the season’s champion. This year, the winner of the Race to Dubai has already been confirmed - Rory McIlroy secured the Harry Vardon trophy a week before the championship.

McIlroy had a highly successful season on the Tour, including victories in the Dubai Desert Classic and Genesis Scottish Open. He has been a dominant force on the Tour for years, and his latest win is his fifth overall, making him one of the most successful players in the Tour’s history. He also holds the record for the highest career earnings in the DP World Tour, with €50,582,631.19 in prize money.

Despite only playing 4 regular DP World Tour events in 2023 and having not played the DP World Tour Championship yet, Rory McIlroy is officially the winner of the Race to Dubai. The DP World Tour Championship is one of the richest golf tournaments in the world, with a prize purse of $10.5 million . The championship winner will receive $3 million , while the runner-up will receive $1.5 million. Additionally, the winner of the Race to Dubai will receive a bonus of $2 million from the Race to Dubai bonus pool of $5 million.

Although the prize money for McIlroy’s fifth win is yet to be confirmed, the previous four winners received approximately $2m from the Race to Dubai bonus pool.

Prize money at the DP World Tour Championship

The 2023 DP World Tour Championship features several big names like Rory McIlroy , Jon Rahm , and Matt Fitzpatrick . The players will go up against each other for that winner’s paycheck of $3,000,000. This is the standard 16 percent of the total prize money, at $10.5 million, a 5% increase compared to last year.

Apart from the prize money, the champion golfer will also get 22 OWGR points and 2000 Race to Dubai points from the 12,000 on offer . This will help decide the winner of the season-long Race to Dubai. The golfer winning the Dubai event will also get a two-plus season exemption on the European Tour .

After the event, the top five players in the Race to Dubai standings will get paid from the circuit’s bonus pool.

Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy pose with their trophies after the end of the DP World Tour Championship. Rahm claimed the tournament title while McIlroy won the season-long points race.

Andrew Redington

To say Jon Rahm loves playing the DP World Tour Championship on the Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates would be the understatement of understatements. The 28-year-old Spaniard had two wins and a T-4 showing in his three previous starts in the Old World circuit’s season finale, posting a scoring average of 67.66.

It was more of the same this week, as Rahm followed up an opening-round 70 with a 66-65-67 finish to take the tournament title for a third time, outpacing Tyrrell Hatton and Alex Noren by two shots. In the process, he lowered that career scoring average to 67.5.

It was Rahm’s ninth career DP World Tour victory and fifth win in the tour’s elevated Rolex Series events. With the triumph, Rahm claimed the $3 million first-place prize money payout (€2,891,271) from the overall purse of $10 million. He also saw his career earnings on the DP World Tour rise to €21,834,859.52, the 19th player in tour history to break the €20 million mark.

There was another winner on Sunday as well as Rory McIlroy, while finishing four strokes back of Rahm in solo fourth place, earned the DP World Tour’s Harry Vardon Trophy as the season-long points title winner . It’s the third time McIlroy has won the honor, but the first in a season in which he also won the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup title.

New membership opportunities outlined for PGA TOUR members on the DP World Tour

FedExCup finishers in positions 126-200 can take up full membership for 2024, Affiliate Members and Non-Members will be included in a new ‘Non-Member Race to Dubai’ list

Change Text Size

The DP World Tour announced new membership opportunities for PGA TOUR members in its 2024 season, a further illustration of the strength of the relationship between the two Tours through the existing Strategic Alliance.

This list will see players accrue Race to Dubai Points and, based on their points, can see them potentially qualify for (a) the DP World Tour play-offs in 2024 and (b) the season-ending Bonus Pool in 2024 if they have played four or more counting tournaments outside the Majors, in line with the current DP World Tour Member regulations.

Should they choose to additionally take up Affiliate Membership, this will give them the potential to earn full ranked membership of the DP World Tour in the following season if their final ranking qualifies them.

PGA TOUR Members who take up Full Membership (Option (i) above) will play from a newly created Category 12 in the 2024 DP World Tour Exemption Category list. Only five players from this category can play in a DP World Tour event in any given week.

To access this category, eligible players must join the DP World Tour as members by Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2023, to compete in tournaments in the 2024 calendar year, but by Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2023, if they want to compete in any of the 2024 season tournaments scheduled for November or December 2023.

These initiatives – which were discussed and ratified by the DP World Tour’s Tournament Committee – follow on from the one announced last year that will see the leading ten players on the 2023 Race to Dubai (not otherwise exempt) earn PGA TOUR cards for the 2024 season – these cards being ranked after the top 125 finishers on the 2022-23 FedExCup Fall Points List.

“When we announced our Strategic Alliance with the PGA TOUR in November 2021, one of the prime objectives was to give as many opportunities as possible to members of both Tours, and this is another perfect example of how this is working," said David Howell, Chairman of the DP World Tour’s Tournament Committee.

“Our Ten Cards initiative will give the opportunity for DP World Tour members to excel on the PGA TOUR next season and this new membership opportunity announced today will give PGA TOUR members the chance to do exactly the same on our Tour," said Keith Pelley, Chief Executive of the DP World Tour. "I am excited at the possibilities.”

DP World Tour pro hits tee shot 8 yards, sideways; let him explain

No, it wasn’t a shot-tracking mistake.

Matt Baldwin, a 38-year-old Englishman who plays on the DP World Tour, really did hit an 8-yard drive on Thursday at the Betfred British Masters.

Let him explain, though.

The bizarre tee shot happened on The Belfry’s 438-yard, par-4 fourth hole, which features a back tee that is mostly surrounded by water. Baldwin was 1 under through his first three holes when something strange happened as he began to swing his driver.

“Got to the top of my backswing,” Baldwin told DPWT social on Friday, “felt like a little bit of a crack maybe in the glue or in the head, so tried to stop, momentum carried me on and just clipped the ball that much here (inside heel of the clubface), and it went through my legs and nearly into the water hazard down behind me.”

Baldwin added that his first reaction was to laugh because he assumed that because he attempted to stop his swing, he’d be able to re-tee without penalty.

“But it turns out,” Baldwin said, “because I made contact with the ball, it was actually a shot and I had to play my next one from a yard in front of the tee marker, from the rough.”

An eight yard horizontal drive... BACKWARDS?! That's what @mattbaldwin26 did at the 4th hole yesterday #BetfredBritishMasters pic.twitter.com/XmWVgpZJ9e — DP World Tour (@DPWorldTour) August 30, 2024

There are only a few instances in which the Rules of Golf allow a stroke to be discarded: if a player starts his swing but then either stops it or purposely misses the ball on the follow-through, or if a player accidentally makes contact with the ball during a practice swing (a la Zach Johnson at the Masters) or while preparing for the shot.

So, Baldwin was out of luck. With 445 yards still to the hole, he hit 4-hybrid 180 yards with this second shot and then failed to reach the green with a 6-iron. He recovered nicely from there, though, pitching on to 10 feet and sinking the putt.

“Easy bogey,” said Baldwin, who after rounds of 72-68 sits T-14 on the leaderboard through 36 holes.
