Two big returns as Pakistan announce squad for the T20I series against New Zealand

Pakistan have announced their 17-member squad for the five-match T20I series against New Zealand, starting 18 April.

Babar Azam is back at the helm as the captain of Pakistan in the white-ball formats and will lead the team in the upcoming series against New Zealand at home.

The squad also marks the comeback of Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim, who both reversed their retirement decision to make themselves available for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Haris Rauf, who was recently reinstated in Pakistan's central contract list, failed to make the cut as he continues to recover from a shoulder injury that cut short his Pakistan Super League (PSL) campaign.

Squad: Babar Azam (c), Abrar Ahmed, Azam Khan, Fakhar Zaman, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Abbas Afridi, Mohammad Rizwan, Mohammad Amir, Irfan Khan, Naseem Shah, Saim Ayub, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Afridi, Usama Mir, Usman Khan, Zaman Khan.

Non-travelling reserves: Haseebullah Khan, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Wasim Jr, Sahibzada Farhan, Salman Ali Agha.

The genius of Babar Azam - as told by his friends and colleagues | T20WC 2022

Speaking on the return of Amir and Imad, newly-appointed senior team manager Wahab Riaz said: “The decision to include Imad Wasim and Mohammad Amir was a straightforward one, given their availability for selection and considering Haris Rauf's injury and Mohammad Nawaz's current form.

"Both Amir and Imad possess undeniable match-winning capabilities, and we trust they will consistently deliver strong performances to bolster the team's objectives."

“As we prepare for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and West Indies, this series holds significant importance for Pakistan. Rather than solely focusing on the formidable New Zealand side, we aim to introspect and identify areas for improvement. I anticipate that players will seize the opportunities presented to strengthen their claims for the World Cup.”

Pakistan have also revamped their coaching staff for the upcoming assignment, with former all-rounder Azhar Mahmood appointed as the head coach for the five-match series.

He will be flanked by Mohammad Yousuf (batting coach) and Saeed Ajmal (spin-bowling coach) while Wahab Riaz, who was the chief selector, now assumes the role of team manager.

The Pakistan team have amped up their preparation for the five-match series as well as the T20 World Cup with a 29-member fitness camp in Kakul, Abbottabad that started on 26 March and concluded on 8 April.

Babar’s men have a packed schedule heading into the T20 World Cup, leaving no stone unturned in their preparation for the mega-event. After the New Zealand series, Pakistan will travel to Ireland for a three-match T20I series starting 10 May after which they will face off against defending champions England in four T20Is.

Wasim Akram explains why Indian team should visit Pakistan for Champions Trophy 2025

Former captain hopes all countries will participate in mega event as cricket and politics are entirely different

tribune

Former Pakistan cricket captain Wasim Akram has expressed hope that the Indian team will visit Pakistan for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

"I believe the Indian team will tour Pakistan next year for the Champions Trophy and witness the excellent arrangements,” Akram said during an interview with an international media outlet.

He praised PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi's efforts to upgrade stadiums for the mega event, calling it a positive step.

Akram emphasised that Pakistan needs this tournament to boost its cricketing profile. "I hope all countries will participate because cricket and politics are entirely different. The whole nation is ready to host eight major teams," he added.

The 2025 Champions Trophy is scheduled to take place between February and mid-March, featuring 15 matches. The Indian team is expected to play all its matches in Lahore.

This tournament marks the return of the Champions Trophy after an eight-year hiatus. Pakistan won the last edition in 2017 under Sarfraz Ahmed's leadership, defeating India in the final.

The ICC has confirmed the participation of eight teams: Pakistan (host), India, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Afghanistan, England, and Bangladesh.

Pakistan and India have not played a bilateral series since 2013. The Indian team last toured Pakistan for the 2008 Asia Cup.

Wasim Akram hopes Team India will travel to Pakistan for Champions Trophy

 alt=

New Delhi: The 2025 Champions Trophy is set to be held in Pakistan from February 19 to March 9. India, Australia, England, South Africa, Bangladesh, New Zealand, Afghanistan and hosts Pakistan are in the fray.

Amid controversy regarding India’s participation in the tournament, Pakistan pace legend Wasim Akram spoke about the importance of hosting a tournament of such magnitude for the ‘betterment of cricket’ in the country.

“I hope that India comes to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy. The whole country is looking forward to receiving all the teams. The cricket will be great and we will welcome them in splendid fashion. We have great facilities and are working on new stadiums. The (Pakistan Cricket Board) chairman has started work on the new stadiums in Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad so I believe it will be a great tournament and Pakistan needs that tournament for the betterment of cricket and I hope all countries do come because cricket and politics should always be separate,” said Akram.

India has not travelled to Pakistan for a bilateral series since 2006. The two sporting rivals have only squared against each other in International Cricket Council (ICC) tournaments since 2013 due to tense relationships between the two countries. As per reports, Team India is still reluctant to travel to their neighbouring country which could see the tournament being played in a hybrid mode.

“Overall everything is ready. The whole country is looking forward to receiving all the teams and dignitaries and the press as well and I hope you guys come to see what wonderful arrangements we have in Pakistan,” added the former Pakistan captain.

The 2023 Asia Cup was scheduled to take place in Pakistan as well before the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) informed that the central government refused to allow the Indian contingent to travel across the border which led to a part of the tournament, including all India matches, to take place in Sri Lanka.

India and Pakistan have not had bilateral tours since 2012 and they only play in ICC events. The Pakistan team travelled to India for the ODI World Cup last year. The BCCI has always maintained that the team will travel to Pakistan only if allowed by the central government.

2024 tour de france cyclists to watch: jonas vingegaard, tadej pogacar lead the pack.

  • Anthony DeCicco ,
  • Anthony DeCicco

As the final days of June approach, cycling’s premier event comes to life. The 2024 Tour de France — the 111 th edition of the historic race — begins this Saturday, with coverage streaming on Peacock and NBC.

Spanning 21 stages and more than 2,000 miles, the Tour de France challenges cyclists in a way like no other event does. But this year’s edition of the event has some notable changes, namely its start in Italy and a finish in Nice, not Paris, due to the upcoming Summer Olympics.

And as always, the Tour de France has some serious star power. The top cyclists in the world train and prepare for the opportunity to participate in this very event, as it always ranks No. 1 on the cycling calendar.

From multiple-time winners to intriguing debutants, this year’s Tour de France field has it all. Here’s a look at the top contenders heading into the 2024 Tour de France:

Jonas Vingegaard

The reigning back-to-back Tour de France winner, Jonas Vingegaard, is the cyclist to knock off in this year’s event.

It was initially unclear if Vingegaard would even compete in the 2024 Tour de France, as serious crash in April put the Danish superstar’s chances to race in jeopardy. But he’s cleared to go, and his condition will be a story to follow throughout the event.

Part of a star-studded Visma-Lease a Bike team, Vingegaard will look to make history and become the sixth cyclist to win three-straight Tour de France titles.

Tadej Pogacar

Coming off a dominant performance in the Giro d’Italia just a month ago (winning by the largest margin since 1965), Tadej Pogacar is in rare form heading into the Tour de France.

He also won the Volta a Catalunya, Liège–Bastogne–Liège and Strade Bianche this year, with the Tour de France being the final obstacle in what would be a historic campaign. If he can take the win in 2024, he’d be the first to complete the rare Giro-Tour double since Marco Pantani in 1998.

With Tour de France wins in 2020 and 2021 along with runner-up nods in 2022 and 2023, Pogacar is undoubtedly one of — if not the best — cyclists in the world. Having lost to Vingegaard in two straight Tour de Frances, 2024 could be the Slovenian’s time to dethrone the champ and further cement his legacy.

Remco Evenepoel

Entering his first Tour de France, Remco Evenepoel’s Tour de France debut will have the cycling world abuzz.

The 24-year-old time trial expert will compete with the world’s best after returning from injury and is ready to prove himself at the Grand Tour level. After winning the individual time trial in stage 4 of the Critérium du Dauphiné, he conceded the overall lead and fell victim to injuries and fatigue.

But with his fitness improving ahead of the Tour de France, there’s no telling what Evenepoel’s ceiling is. The Belgian will most certainly be focused on the time trials in stages 7 and 21, which could prove to be an x-factor in his quest to win it all in his Tour de France debut.

Primoz Roglic

Riding high off an eight-second overall victory at the Critérium du Dauphiné, Slovenia’s Primoz Roglic is building momentum at the right time. Considering his uninspired 10 th place finish at the Paris-Nice, his Dauphiné win was an encouraging sign ahead of the Tour de France.

At 34 years old, Roglic’s window to win the Tour de France is seemingly closing. But the 2020 Tour runner-up has all of the experience to pull out a major victory, even if he’s facing a strong group of cyclists in their prime.

While not at his physical peak, Roglic continues to be one of cycling’s most cunning and crafty athletes with the ability to win a big race.

Matteo Jorgenson

One of the best riders on the Visma-Lease a Bike team this year, 24-year-old Matteo Jorgenson has racked up wins in the Paris-Nice and Dwars door Vlaanderen. On top of the two wins, the American’s impressive second-place finish in the Critérium du Dauphiné prove he’s ready for the main stage.

Having placed 20 th in 2022’s Tour, Jorgenson has the Grand Tour experience to build upon in 2024. His great form this year should be encouraging for both Vingegaard (his Visma-Lease a Bike teammate) and Americans alike as he looks to make a big jump in the Tour de France.
