Cities around the world have lit famous monuments in blue and gold. here’s a roundup of photographs., madison dapcevich, published feb. 25, 2022.

Curious about how Snopes' writers verify information and craft their stories for public consumption? We've collected some posts that help explain how we do what we do. Happy reading and let us know what else you might be interested in knowing.

Following the invasion of Ukraine by Russia on Feb. 24, 2022, people around the world expressed support for the Eastern European nation in ways appropriate for 2022. Turkish football fans engaged in an anti-Kremlin chant while the Taliban called for a “peaceful” resolution between the two parties.

In true French fashion, Parisians illuminated the Eiffel Tower, a symbol of the European city, with the blue and gold of the Ukrainian flag.

A video of the lighting was posted to Reddit on Feb. 25, 2022, where as of this writing it had been upvoted more than 1,300 times. Meanwhile, a 16-minute video shared by the British publication The Independent was recorded live, showing Paris’ Eiffel Tower lighting up in as a means to express the nation’s support of Ukraine.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNS1n_qJS3M In a Twitter post, the British newspaper The Telegraph reported that the light display was made at the request of Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo. French President Emmanuel Macron also expressed his support of Ukraine, announcing that the nation will respond without weakness to Russia’s “act of war” on its neighboring nation.

From the Empire State Building in New York City to the London Eye, social media users from around the world have posted photographs of some of the planet’s best-known monuments lit up in blue and yellow. We’ve posted a roundup of cities from around the world below:

London Eye in London, UK

Watch live as the Eiffel Tower lights up with Ukrainian flag colours

Watch live as Paris ’ Eiffel Tower lights up in blue and yellow, the colours of the Ukrainian flag, to express its support following the Russian invasion.

On Wednesday, Parisian authorities lit the City Hall in the same colours to also show their support after Vladimir Putin ’s troops invaded Ukraine.

Germany’s capital city also sent a clear signal for a free and sovereign Ukraine, by lighting up the Brandenburg Gate.

Today’s show of unity comes after Russia was stripped of this season’s Champions League final with Paris now set to host the match.

Visuel Paris, Tour Eiffel Ukraine

Russia denies Eiffel Tower coffin stunt an anti-Ukraine undertaking

The coffin stunt comes as Western leaders rethink the bounds of their approach to arming and training Ukrainians.

President Emmanuel Macron with Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Russia has vehemently denied any role in a stunt that saw several coffins appear at the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

In a statement on Tuesday, Russia’s embassy in France expressed “strong protest against a new Russophobic campaign launched in the French media” that it said is affecting the security of its citizens. The complaint came amid a string of denials by Moscow that it was seeking to influence public opinion as the West mulls raising support for Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s invasion.

“The Russian Federation has never interfered and does not interfere in the internal affairs of France – our country has other, more important priorities,” the embassy statement read.

Five coffins draped in French flag and bearing the inscription “French soldiers of Ukraine” were deposited by three men from a van on Saturday. A Bulgarian, a Ukrainian and a German, who were later arrested said they had been paid to drop the coffins at the iconic tourist spot.

French authorities and media have posited that Russia may have organised the stunt in response to President Emmanuel Macron’s suggestion that France could send members of the military to Ukraine to aid and train its forces or allow it to use French weapons to strike inside Russia .

Reporting on the stunt, French media have noted other recent activities that police have said may have involved Russian agents seeking to influence public opinion.

In November, shortly after the outbreak of the Gaza war, more than 200 paintings of the Star of David appeared on buildings around Paris.

France said a Russian destabilisation campaign had used automated social media accounts to whip up controversy and confusion about the symbols and feed alarm about surging anti-Semitism.

A Moldovan couple who were arrested in Paris for scrawling Stars of David on a school told media that they acted on orders from “an individual in Russia”.

Last month, red hands were painted on a Holocaust memorial in Paris. Police believe the perpetrators fled abroad.

Ahead of the EU elections on June 6, reports of Russian efforts to influence the outcome and destabilise the bloc have been rife.

The three men arrested over the latest stunt, who said they were paid 400 euros ($434) to deposit the coffins, appeared before a judge on Sunday.

Officials have said investigations are on to determine if the stunt was organised from abroad.

No immunity

Despite its claims of innocence, Moscow appeared unable to contain its anger against Paris on Tuesday.

The Kremlin described recent allegations by Microsoft that Russia stepped up an online disinformation campaign taking aim at France and the upcoming Paris Olympics as “absolute slander”.

According to Microsoft, two Russian-backed entities have organised more than a dozen French websites spreading false news to denigrate the reputation of the International Olympic Committee and create the impression that the Summer Games will be marred by violence.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov that there was no substance in the allegations.

He also announced that Russia could not guarantee that Western army instructors who train Ukrainian soldiers would not be targeted by the Russian military.

“Any instructors who are engaged in training the Ukrainian regime do not have any immunity,” he told the press.

Eiffel Tower to go dark earlier, as Paris moves to save energy because of Ukraine war

PARIS — Lights on the Eiffel Tower will soon be turned off more than an hour earlier at night to save electricity, as Russia’s war in Ukraine deepens an energy crisis in Europe.

Mayor Anne Hidalgo said the iconic tower — normally illuminated until 1 a.m. — is just one of the monuments and municipal buildings that will be plunged into darkness earlier in the evening as the French capital, like the rest of France and Europe, faces risks of power shortages, rationing and blackouts when energy demand surges this winter.

Starting Sept. 23, lights on the Eiffel Tower will be turned off after the last visitor leaves at 11:45 p.m., Hidalgo said. Other landmarks operated by the city, such as Saint-Jacques tower and City Hall, will be turned off at 10 p.m.

“It’s a symbolic but important step,” Hidalgo said, brushing off criticism that Paris authorities could do more to reduce energy consumption by 10% — the target set in July by President Emmanuel Macron as part of a nationwide “sobriety plan” to conserve energy.

For safety reasons, streetlights will stay on across Paris, and the ornate bridges over the Seine River also will remain illuminated at night, Hidalgo told reporters.

Russia has cut natural gas supplies to several European countries that support Ukraine, sending gas and electricity prices surging. That’s fueled inflation and raised fears about shrinking supplies, prompting countries to enact conservation measures and relief for consumers and businesses.

While some European companies have reduced or halted production as energy prices surge, the European Union is looking to pass proposals to ease the crisis.

To align with France’s savings plan, Hidalgo said she also will press the government to adjust the lighting on national monuments in Paris, such as the domed Pantheon and the Arc de Triomphe — the famous Napoleonic arch that dominates the Champs-Elysees Avenue.

Paris authorities also aim to save energy by lowering the temperature in public buildings by from 66 degrees Fahrenheit to 64 during office hours, lower after hours and on weekends.

Ukraine's Ministry of Defense posted a video of the Eiffel Tower getting blown up in a message apparently intended for NATO

  • Ukraine's Ministry of Defense on Saturday posted a video showing the Eiffel Tower getting bombed.
  • The video was intended to be a message for NATO.
  • "Just think if this were to happen to another European capital," a caption in the video reads.

Insider Today

The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine posted a startling video to its Twitter on Saturday depicting a military attack on the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

The 45-second video, intended to be a message for NATO, shows the Western city being bombed and urges NATO to "close the sky over Ukraine!"

"Just think if this were to happen to another European capital," a caption in the video said.

Related stories

—Defence of Ukraine (@DefenceU) March 12, 2022

The video opens with a woman posing in front of the Eiffel Tower. Seconds later, an explosion rocks the city. At one point, flames surround the Eiffel Tower and several planes jet through the open sky.

The camera pans from the Eiffel Tower to other French landmarks like the Sacré-Coeur basilica. Large plumes of smoke engulf the landmarks, and air raid sirens are heard in the distance.

"We will fight to the end," reads a caption attributed to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. "Just give us a chance to live. Close the sky over Ukraine or give us air fighters. If we fall, you fall."

Zelenskyy has for days called on Western leaders to impose a no-fly zone. Last week, he reiterated that urge as he described in a video how eight Russian missiles  "completely destroyed" an airport in Vinnytsia.

Earlier this week, he rebuked NATO for deliberating on the decision to implement a no-fly zone, saying the inaction effectively gave Russia a "green light" to continue to strike at Ukraine.

"All the people who will die from this day will die because of you, as well," Zelensky  said . "Because of your weakness. Because of your disunity."

NATO said  implementing a no-fly zone would escalate the Ukraine-Russia conflict into "a full-fledged war in Europe, involving many more countries and causing much more human suffering."

Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin said  any country that tries to impose a no-fly zone will be considered as "participants in a military conflict, and it doesn't matter members of which organizations they are."

"It is impossible to do it, on the very territory of Ukraine, it's possible only from the territory of some neighboring states. But any movement in this direction will be considered by us as participation in an armed conflict," Putin added.

Zelenskiy’s world tour to ask Kyiv’s allies not to give in to Russia

The ukrainian leader has visited over 10 countries so far ahead of the june 16 peace summit in switzerland, which u.s. president joe biden will not attend.

Volodymyr Zelenskiy, Joe Biden and Emmanuel Macron

Volodymyr Zelenskiy has embarked on a three-week marathon of foreign visits seeking unwavering international support for Ukraine’s defense according to his plans, without ceding an inch politically or militarily to Russia. The Ukrainian president acknowledged to The New York Times on May 21 that his Western allies are proving hesitant and that “everyone keeps the door slightly ajar,” to Russia. Six days later, on May 27, Zelenskiy began an intense agenda of meetings that included visits to at least 11 countries.

Zelenskiy was among the leaders invited Thursday to the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings . The message was twofold: of remembrance of the victory against Nazism and now, of a common front against Russian imperialism . But even in the run-up to the D-Day anniversary, Kyiv’s fear of its partners leaving that door ajar to Moscow was exposed: the French government announced in April that it would invite a Russian delegation to the commemoration; the proposal was finally cancelled after criticism from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Ukraine.

Zelenskiy is scheduled to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday in Paris, an appointment that is expected to be loaded with symbolism. Despite the fact that French military aid to Ukraine is notably lower than German or British, Macron has assumed a more defiant discourse with Russia and one closer to that of the Ukrainian leader than other major powers. “Zelenskiy has sought to create a moment of opportunity for his European policy, positioning France with a greater initiative to support Ukraine,” Léonie Allard, a researcher at the Atlantic Council, assessed in an analysis Wednesday.

Europe, led by Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, is showing less hesitation over Ukraine than the United States, which is engaged in the early stages of the presidential election. The likely Republican candidate, Donald Trump , is in favor of turning off the tap on military aid to Ukraine. And the Democrats, as reported by U.S. media outlets such as Politico , prefer to put the invasion on the back burner during the campaign for fear of paying an electoral toll.

For these reasons, Zelenskiy’s tour took him to Madrid on May 27, Lisbon and Brussels on May 28, and Stockholm on May 31, where he signed 10-year bilateral defense treaties with the governments of Norway, Sweden, and Iceland. He did the same in Portugal and Belgium, and earlier in Spain, where Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez pledged unprecedented military assistance worth over $1.4 billion as well as his government’s support for Ukraine’s aspirations to accede to NATO, the biggest red line that the Western powers are avoiding crossing for fear of escalating the conflict with Russia into a world war.

Tension with Washington

The Ukrainian president was able to meet on the beaches of Normandy with his American counterpart, Joe Biden, after two weeks of bilateral tension. Biden’s personal resistance to allowing weapons provided by Washington to target military positions on Russian soil has left U.S.-Ukraine relations “farther apart than ever since the war started,” sources in both governments told the Financial Times last week. The veto was finally lifted , but Biden continues to refuse to sanction the use of ATACMS long-range missiles on Russian soil, precisely the military asset that Kyiv is demanding to be able to hit enemy targets on the other side of the border.

Zelenskiy’s remarks in Brussels on May 28 were not well received by the White House. Biden has ruled out his presence at the peace summit to be held on June 15-16 in Switzerland, where over 100 states will participate to discuss ways to support Ukraine and Zelenskiy’s 10-point plan for hypothetical peace negotiations with Russia. The U.S. president will be attending a campaign fundraiser in California on those dates. Of the decision, Zelenskiy said : “Putin will only applaud his absence, personally applaud it — and standing, at that.” “[The] peace summit needs President Biden and so do the other leaders who look at the reaction of the United States.”

The U.S. president will meet again with Zelenskiy at the G-7 summit to be held in Italy from June 13-15. One of the points to be discussed is the transfer of part of the Russian assets frozen in Kyiv’s allied countries to finance Ukraine’s defense and reconstruction. The obstacles to this lie not only in the legal complexity of the operation, but also in misgivings about Moscow’s response. Before the G-7, Zelenskiy will travel to to Berlin on June 11, where he is scheduled to meet with Scholz and address the Bundestag, Germany’s lower house.

China is Russia’s main ally on the international stage, both economically and diplomatically. Beijing will not attend the Swiss Peace Summit, following the logic that any discussion on ending the war is only productive if Moscow participates. Zelenskiy has played a risky card during his international tour: speaking out directly against China. The Ukrainian leader accused the authorities in Beijing of sabotaging his peace proposals to favor Russia on June 1 while in Singapore. From there, Zelenskiy traveled to the Philippines, a country that is embroiled in territorial disputes with China. On June 5, on his return trip to Europe to attend the Normandy landings commemorations, the Ukrainian president stopped in Doha to meet with the emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, one of the few states, together with Turkey and other Arab countries, that are mediating between Moscow and Kyiv.

The chances of Ukraine expelling Russian forces by military means are slim. Mikola Bielieskov, a leading analyst and researcher at the National Institute for Strategic Studies, a center under the Ukrainian presidency, published a report last week in which he noted that a “realistic strategic victory for Ukraine” will be to have sufficient resources to defend territory not occupied by Russia over the next year and a half.

Both Zelenskiy and representatives of his government have publicly conceded that the more the war is extended, the more complex it is to negotiate military support from allies that could turn the situation around on the battlefield. The clearest example was the more than half a year it took for Republicans and Democrats to finally agree in April on the latest multi-billion dollar arms package for Ukraine.

In an interview with EL PAÍS on May 31, Oksana Mishlovska, a researcher at the University of Bern, confirmed that “in contrast to what is happening in Ukraine, where the non-dominant voices in favor of a negotiated solution or a Korean scenario [a ceasefire that leaves Ukraine divided into two opposing realities] are silenced, in the European Union and beyond, opinions are visibly divided.” Zelenskiy’s agenda focuses precisely on persuading the international community that in the face of Russia, not an inch can be given. Time and a pro-Kremlin war front are working against him.

A Paris judge questions 3 men suspected of 'psychological violence' at Eiffel Tower

P ARIS (AP) — Three people were released from custody Monday pending further investigation after they allegedly placed five coffins at the foot of the Eiffel Tower , a Paris landmark that will feature prominently in the upcoming Olympic Games .

According to officials at the Paris prosecutor’s office, the three — citizens of Bulgaria, Germany and Ukraine — placed the coffins, covered with a French flag that included an inscription reading “French soldiers of Ukraine," near the Eiffel Tower on Saturday,

The motive for the incident was unclear. France is on its highest alert level ahead of the July 26-Aug. 11 Summer Games in Paris and the lavish open-air ceremony on the River Seine .

On Monday, the three men were questioned by an investigative judge. The prosecutor’s office asked that they be charged with premeditated violence, the officials told the Associated Press. Placing coffins at the foot of the Paris landmark that millions of tourists visit every year “is considered an act of psychological violence," and caused employees of the landmark and others "an inability to work,” the officials said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because of a pending investigation.

The investigating judge didn't file charges, however, but named the three as assisted witnesses, a special status under French law, the prosecutor's office said. They will remain free pending further investigation.

Those detained in the Eiffel Tower incident include the driver of the vehicle that transported the coffins, a 39-year-old Bulgarian, as well as two people associated with him — a 25-year-old German man and a 16-year-old Ukrainian, who was arrested aboard a Paris-Berlin bound Flixbus, the officials said.

On Friday, French authorities raised preliminary terrorism charges against an 18-year-old accused of plotting to target spectators at soccer games at the Paris Olympics. It was the first such thwarted plot targeting the Games, which start in eight weeks.

The Olympic rings will be displayed on the Eiffel Tower. The Olympic and Paralympic medals in Paris are being embedded with pieces from a hexagonal chunk of iron taken from the monument.

The Eiffel Tower coffins appeared after other strange incidents in recent months worrying French authorities.

Last month, graffiti showing red hands appeared on the Holocaust Memorial in Paris . And in October, soon after the start of the Israel-Hamas war, stencils of blue Stars of David appeared on Paris buildings.

French authorities accused Russian security services of stirring up controversy around the stars. French Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourne said both incidents involved people paid to destabilize and drive wedges in French society.

Surk reported from Nice, France.
