We’ve tried a lot of different sleep configurations with our kids while traveling over the years, and we know that finding the right setup for your child can make a huge difference on your trip.

One travel item that can be very helpful while traveling with toddlers is a portable bed rail. This is a product that goes under your child’s sheet to make a barrier at the edge of your child’s bed. These rails create a boundary for your child and prevent them from falling out of the bed onto the floor while they are sleeping. 

Portable bed rails are perfect for older toddlers as well as older kids who tend to move around a lot while sleeping.

These bed rails are designed to stay put on the bed, with a safety flap that extends beneath your child. Their weight, along with non-slip dots, keep the rail securely in place even if your child bumps up against it.

The bed rails are quick to inflate (six breaths should do it) and can be deflated by pushing the release valve button. They come with a storage case for when they are not in use.

Thick, durable vinyl prevents the rails from leaking or getting holes, but if you do have a problem the company has great customer service. They are also water resistant and washable, making them easy to clean if your child has an accident. 

And, perhaps most importantly, these rails pack down very compactly and are lightweight, making them ideal for travel.

Shrunks Inflatable Bed Rail

Another option is the highly-rated Shrunks Inflatable Bed Rail . 

This does not come with a safety flap like the Hiccapop, but instead has grip strips on the bottom to keep it in place. For the most part the strips seem to do the job in keeping the rails in place, although it does need a snug fitted sheet to prevent any movement of the rail.

It comes with a manual pump but can also be blown up with your mouth. A large opening in the air valve allows the rails to be inflated and deflated quickly.

These bed rails are made of durable, high grade PVC and are waterproof and washable for easy cleaning.

When not in use they fold down very compactly and are easy to pack in the storage bag. They are also extremely lightweight, making them convenient for travel!

Sunnyglade Portable Bed Rail

Another option similar to the Shrunks is the Sunnyglade Portable Bed Rail . Made of durable PVC, this bed rail is water resistant and easy to clean. It fits underneath the bedsheet and is held in place by grip strips on the bottom of the bed rail. 

A manual foot pump is included, although there are a lot of complaints about the pump not being very useful. You can also choose to inflate the bed rails with your mouth if the pump isn’t doing it for you.

These bed rails are easy to pack for travel and will take up very little space in your luggage.

Ushma Travel Bed Rails for Toddlers

For a more budget-friendly option, the Ushma Travel Bed Rails are another inflatable bed rail at a lesser price. 

Like the Shrunks bed rail, these rails are made of waterproof PVC material. Grip strips on the bottom of the rail, along with positioning them securely under the fitted sheet, prevent the rails from moving while your child is sleeping. 

Because they are inflatable, these rails are lightweight and can fold down very compactly for easy packing. 

As a less expensive alternative to the other inflatable bed rail options, these rails still provide a good user experience to help keep kids secure at night.

Milliard Travel Bed Bumper

For a non-inflatable option, you might want to consider the Milliard Travel Bed Bumper . This foam bumper fits under the sheet to provide a secure barrier for your child. 

The bumper folds in half to make it more compact for travel and has a handle for easy carrying. It requires virtually no setup, just unfold the bumper and place it under the sheet! 

Included with the bumper is a removable, machine-washable cover. The cover has a waterproof backing to prevent the foam from getting damaged should an accident occur. It is made of a soft, comfortable material and has a non-slip bottom to keep the bumper secure on the bed.

The biggest drawback to this bumper is that it doesn’t pack down as compactly as the inflatable options. While this might be a good option for road trips or local travel, it does take up a lot of space in a suitcase, especially if you’re bringing two.

Why use a bed rail for toddlers

There are a couple of different scenarios where you might want to use a portable bed rail for your child. 

The first is if you’re staying somewhere where your child will have their own adult-sized bed . In this situation there is the risk of them rolling off the edge of the bed while they are sleeping. Putting a bed rail on both sides of the bed will create a safety barrier to prevent your child from falling.

Another situation where a bed rail can come in handy is if you are sharing a bed with your child . Your body will provide a barrier on one side and a bed rail on the opposite side of the bed will create a barrier on that side as well.

These bed rails can also be used as a divider between kids who are sharing the same bed . Our kids tend to move around a lot while sleeping. When they share a bed it often ends with one child rolling on top of the other and then both of them waking up screaming. Not fun for anyone. Putting a bed rail in between children in the middle of the bed can help to keep them on their own side and prevent any middle of the night wakeups. 

Tips for using bed rails for toddlers during travel

Try it out before you leave

Plan on pulling out your portable bed rail and trying it out before you travel. Especially with the inflatable ones, there is always a chance (though slim) that you could get one with a leak. You don’t want to find that out when you’re already on your trip!

Plus it’s helpful to get a sense of how the bed rails work and if they are going to be a good option for your child.

Place it under the fitted sheet

These bed rails all work best when placed under the bottom sheet on your child’s bed. This helps to hold them securely in place even if your child bumps into them during the night.

Alternatives to using portable bed rails

There are a few other alternatives to using bed rails during travel with toddlers. We’ve listed a few other ideas below so you can choose the best option for your trip.

Pillow border

One alternative to using a bed rail is using pillows to create a border around your child on the bed. The nice thing about using pillows is that it means you have one less thing to bring with you on your trip.

We’ve used this option many times and it can be effective but does have some drawbacks. One is that the pillows take up more space on the bed than the bed rails. This might be fine if your child is on the bed alone, but if they are sharing with a sibling or parent it can feel really crowded as the pillows force your child more into the center of the bed. 

The other downside is that pillows aren’t as secure as the bed rails. We had a couple of instances where the pillows were pushed out of place and our child actually rolled off the bed, which made us feel that this wasn’t a very safe option for our toddler. 

The portable bed rails are very good at staying in place, giving you the confidence of knowing that they’ll actually be there if your child needs them.

Pool noodle

A pool noodle is another option that creates an effect similar to the inflatable bed rails.

The main drawback here is the amount of space that they take up. If you’re going on a trip where you’re driving, this can be a convenient solution if you have extra room in the car to pack them. However, if we’re flying we feel that a pool noodle would take up too much space. We would rather use that space for other items, so for us the inflatable bed rail is the more useful option for travel.

Note that a pool noodle is also not as tall or wide as the inflatable bed rails, so there is a greater chance of your child rolling over the top of it.

Toddler bed

If you’d rather have your child in their own, smaller bed, you could also consider bringing a portable toddler bed . These beds are specifically designed with toddlers in mind and are a safe and secure place for your child to sleep. 

This also means that you don’t have to have a bed available for your toddler to use at your destination as you will be bringing one with you. You can set up a toddler bed anywhere to create a cozy sleep space for your child. 

Toddler beds are an ideal option for younger toddlers who might climb out of the larger bed in the middle of the night.

The downside to toddler beds is that they tend to take up more space in your suitcase, whereas the portable bed rails are quite compact to pack. But they can work and are also a great option if you’re driving instead of flying.

Pack ‘n play

One final option is to use a pack ‘n play when traveling with your toddler. Pack ‘n plays are quite bulky, so if you’re flying this might not be the best option. If you’re staying at a hotel they will often have cribs available, just call beforehand to check. Sometimes Airbnbs will have pack ‘n plays available as well.

Final thoughts

Bed rails can be a perfect option for keeping your child safe and contained while sleeping on a trip. When tucked under the sheets, they create a border to prevent your child from rolling off the bed during sleep.

Although there are a lot of different sleep options out there, if you have a bed available for your child portable bed rails are compact and easy to bring when traveling. They provide an extra measure of peace of mind to both you and your child, allowing everyone to sleep better.

It only weighs 7 lbs.–compare that with other play yards! Add to that its terrific versatility and its hard to find a better travel bed. Use it from birth on up through three years (or more), indoors and out. Breathable mesh panels let you take this to the park and beach just as easily as Grandma’s house (where rubber feet will protect her floors).

The self-inflating air mattress works much like a Therm-a-Rest (or backpacker’s mattress), providing good insulation from the cold ground as well as padding from hard floors. An optional UV-protective cover fits over the top to offer protection outdoors (though you’ll have to throw a beach towel or something over the sides for sun protection now that they are 100% mesh (please let me know when you’ve finished thinking that one through, Phil&Ted).

The Traveler also has a zipping side panel to allow in and out access for playtime on the beach, and for older children who are ready to come and go on their own from their own travel bed. BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light

At 11 lbs. the Travel Crib Light weighs a little more than Phil & Ted’s full-size travel crib, costs around $100 more, and you probably won’t be able to use it as long (it also doesn’t offer the unzipped side self-access for older children).

That said, the easy to assemble BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light is worth it to some parents for the 1-minute (or less) set-up time, space savings when folded and set-up, and eco-certified softer fabrics–every bit of which can be gently washed in the machine.

In theory, the BabyBjorn Travel Light can be used for newborns up to around 3 years old (older children may be happier with the longer mattress of the Phil & Ted or Peapod Plus, both of which they can freely come and go from when they’re ready). The Peapod Baby Bed for Travel

The Peapod Plus can be used from infancy well through preschool, and includes a lightweight sleeping bag. In addition to the UV mesh found in the smaller Peapod, the Plus also has roll-down nylon sides for added wind protection.

Other differences: The poles used in the Plus are thinner and more lightweight than the very heavy-duty ones used in the original above, keeping its weight down, but at the cost of some stability (if you have rowdy rompers in the house, you may prefer the original Peapod). The very popular Snuggle Nest has been improved with new safety features, including ventilation through breathable sidewalls and an optional 1.5″ incline wedge to help elevate baby’s head–very helpful should a little nose get stuffy during your travels.

Great solution for occasional visits to Grandma’s house, car trips, and camping (but at 6 lbs. and still bulky when deflated, you probably don’t want to pack this portable bed on the plane).

My youngest just turned three and I am finding it quite difficult to figure out sleeping arrangements in hotels and rental homes lately. Olivia is too big for a pack & play but she is too young to sleep in an unfamiliar bed without the risk of falling off and injuring herself in the middle of the night.

As our next trip, a cruise on Royal Caribbean ‘s Harmony of the Seas , quickly approaches I began frantically researching my options. It turns out there aren’t many. So, when I came across these inflatable travel bed rails for toddlers by Shrunks I was stoked!!

Incredibly Light – Perfect for Travel

The travel bed rails are inflatable so they are incredibly lightweight and easy to pack. Much better than lugging a pack and play or one of those large inflatable floor mattresses. Their slim design also them to easily fit under standard bed sheets making them incredibly versatile. Another thing that I love about Shrunks travel bed rails for toddlers is they are are also BPA-free, Phthalate-free and Lead-free so you can rest easy knowing your baby is totally safe.

Plus, they work great at home too! After receiving the package I tested them on Olivia’s bed at home and I quickly realized that not only did they work great! I don’t travel with a toddler, but I babysit my granddaughter and she likes to take her naps on the sofa. Right now she is small enough that I can stuff a pillow under the blanket to keep her from rolling off, but this would be MUCH better!

These are so smart. We usually rearrange beds against walls, use pillows (and our own bodies) to keep the little one safe in a new bed. It’d be awesome to win these and not have to improvise so much ahaha!

Travel bed guard?

I need a bed guard for a single bed to take on holiday for a wriggly 5 year old. We are travelling by car, so we can throw it in the boot. His current one is supposedly easy to fold up and take, but although it does the job well, it took a least an hour of sweating and cursing to put together, and we cannot work out how to get it to fold! Any recommendations therefore would be much appreciated.

It’s not the nicest of topics but the truth is that not all travel is glamorous and Instagram-worthy. Budget travelers, backpackers, and some unfortunate vacation-goers may find themselves in unpleasant accommodation conditions infested with certain pesky little creatures: bed bugs. Eww. Gross but true. Learn how to prevent bed bugs while traveling with these eight helpful tips!

How to Prevent Bed Bugs

On my first overnight trip abroad, I unknowingly shared a bed with hundreds of hungry bed bugs. I woke up with bite marks decorating my legs, and the weeks that followed included lots of itching.

Editor’s note: this happened to me on the first stop on my  RTW trip , too!

Fortunately, this one buggy experience didn’t stop me from discovering the joy of travel. Instead, I learned more about these tiny creatures and gained a few skills to detect and avoid them.

Since this outing, I’ve gone on many more travels and managed to avoid bed bugs each time, including a return trip two years later to the same hotel where I had my first and only bed bug encounter.

Travelers are always at risk for bed bugs. It doesn’t matter if you stay in the swankiest resort or the cheapest hostel.

I’ve been impressed over the past few years with the measures that the hospitality industry has taken to reduce infestations, but there are still a few things that we, as individuals, can do as well. All it takes is a few simple items that you can easily fit in your luggage.

Note that none of the following can guarantee you an adventure free from bed bugs, but they can help slow the spread of these unwanted hitchhikers.

Here are eight tips on how to prevent bed bugs while traveling:

The Right Kind of Suitcase

I’ve noticed that suitcases on the market today are mostly black. Although black does go with everything, it’s very difficult to spot bed bugs on a suitcase of this color!

Light-colored bags can help you detect bed bugs earlier. Better yet, a hard-sided suitcase means fewer access points for bed bugs compared to a fabric bag.

When you first arrive at a new accommodation, it’s a good idea to do a bed bug inspection. Bed bugs thrive in darkness, so turn off the lights and close the curtains to make sure you’re as thorough as possible. Using your flashlight, take the sheets off the bed and inspect the corners of the mattress.

If you see little dots, it could be blood, waste, or carcasses of bed bugs. Also, shine your flashlight in outlets, furniture screws, and other tiny hiding places.

If you see anything scurrying away from the light, leave the room and notify staff immediately. This may not help you in your mission on how to prevent bed bugs initially but at least you might be able to switch rooms.

How to prevent bed bugs has a lot to do with planning ahead. You should keep your luggage away from any item that has the potential for bed bugs. This includes beds and other people’s luggage. When flying, don’t check your luggage but keep your carry-on with you.

If you’re staying in a hotel, use the foldable luggage holder if it’s provided. If you’re in a hostel, keep your belongings in a metal locker.

But there may be some instances where you have no choice but to keep your bag where it will touch furniture and other people’s suitcases.

Whether you’re using luggage storage or stowing your backpack in the underbelly of a long-distance bus, first put it in a large, heavy-duty garbage bag as a makeshift bed bug barrier.

You can use this garbage bag method any time you want to protect your luggage. The drawbacks are that it can be a hassle to put on and take off, and you don’t want your bag to be mistaken for trash!

If you do end up getting bed bugs, please keep your luggage bagged up so you prevent spreading it to other travelers.

Ziploc bags provide the same kind of protection as a heavy-duty garbage bag, but are more ideal for clothing and other small objects. Using a garbage bag outside your suitcase and baggies inside your suitcase can work double-duty in isolating and avoiding the spread of bed bugs.

As a bonus, Ziploc baggies do a great job of organizing your belongings. You could also use packing cubes !

Long Pants and Long-Sleeved Clothing

During my bed bug incident, I wore capri sweatpants to bed. The bugs feasted on my calves, but I didn’t have a single bite mark above my knee.

I’ve heard from some people that clothing doesn’t always deter bed bugs, but there’s no harm in at least trying to keep them away with a protective layer in your efforts on how to prevent bed bugs.

Sleep in long pants and a long-sleeved top whenever temperature permits while traveling. Since bed bugs can infest more than just mattresses, I try to wear long pants on travel days in case they are lurking in a bus or plane seat. I’ll often even wear a scarf over my head while napping because I don’t want my face to be bitten!

There’s a variety of bug repellant clothing available. Neutral colors might be your best bet if you plan to wear them for anything other than sleeping.  Take a look!

Machine-Washable Clothing

Even if you insist on wearing shorts and tank tops when you travel, at least make sure that all your clothes can go through a washing machine and dryer. I mostly hand-wash and line-dry my clothes when I travel, but I still check the clothing tags before I pack.

If I’m afraid that I’ve had contact with bed bugs, the heat from the hot water and clothes dryer will kill them. Although machine-washable electronics and suitcases would be nice, isolating them and wiping them down has seemed to work so far.

Let’s say, despite your precautions, that you do pick up bed bugs. The good news is, you don’t have many health issues to worry about. Unlike other bugs you may face while traveling, such as ticks and mosquitos, bed bugs don’t spread disease.

However, those nasty bite marks they leave behind are at risk of infection. Clean the bites regularly with soap, and you can continue your adventures without delay.

Bug Spray? Eh, Maybe Not

The bug spray you wear to avoid mosquito bites won’t help you at all with bed bugs.

You could purchase a small canister of bed bug spray, but it comes with downsides. Most sprays on the market don’t kill bed bugs; they only repel them. That means the bugs will just hide in harder-to-find places.

If you simply want to avoid bed bugs during a short-term stay, a spray might be worth considering. But for long-term stops, these sprays will only prolong the problem.

Especially don’t use these sprays if you accidentally bring bed bugs into your own home! There are other products and methods you’ll need to use for an infestation.

Spray alcohol in beds and linen is the best way to ride off the bed bugs. I wasted lots of money in sophisticated insecticides and nothing work.

so i’ve been told time and time again that the hotel foldable luggage racks are one of the worst places to actually set your luggage on, as well as the bed and a carpeted floor. if you have a countertop they say that’s the best place, or the bathtub (which isn’t always practical, i know)

Hello! I will be traveling cross country soon via train, spending 2 nights each way, sitting in royal blue cushioned coach seats. I have already bagged everything going into my (washable) duffel bags. I will change my clothes in the train station before entering my daughters car. (and bag the clothes I wore on the train.) I will outer bag the duffel bags before they go into my daughters trunk. When we arrive at her home, I will also spray them down with 97% alcohol (outside) when I remove the outer bags, then take the duffel bags to be dried in a laundromat to be safe. Do you think I should also put all my bagged clothes from within my duffel bags into a dryer when I empty the luggage? Also, I am stumped about my purse while on the trains. I will bag my purse with a large zip lock bag (ordered on line). Should I also bag everything within my purse? (wallet, cell phone, etc.) Any other ideas would be great! Thank you so much!!!!!

Hi Sharon, it sounds like you have everything covered! If your are particularly worried about your clothes put them in the dryer once you arrive at your destination as the heat should help to get rid of the bugs whilst protecting your clothes. Hope this helps! Have an amazing time on your trip! 🙂

Try to wash your clothing as soon as you get home and never put your suitcase on your bed.

Washing does not kill bed bugs, so don’t put your bedbugs in your washer! Instead, dry your clothes FIRST (when still dirty) in a hot dryer, for 50-60 minutes. Then wash and dry your dirty washable items. This heat treatment will also protect many clothes that you cannot safely wash. After all, you cannot dry all clothes for an hour in a hot dryer after washing, it will damage many clothes. But when heated while dry, many items do fine. Also works for a lot of footwear, cheap small backpacks, etc. But don’t put your favorite sneakers or a fancy backpack in the dryer, it might not survive.

if you want to stop mosquito bites without those nasty sprays just take Vitamin B1 25mg everyday. The vitamin causes a reaction on your skin that the mosquitos dislike. I’ve used this trick for 50 years, never had it fail. Unfortunately it has not worked on those little biting gnats.

When I lived in Vancouver Canada we got bedbugs visiting. So we get to our apartment- we got naked ?? threw our clothes away and jumped in the shower.. I was in my twenties then and the thought of a bedbug and how hard to rid I was willing to streak

Even with all of these preventive strategies, you can’t ensure a perfect trip. Consider your child’s needs and set realistic goals for how far you travel each day. Break the trip up if possible. While Traveling by Car

• Use a behind-the-seat organizer to store your child’s belongings. If this is within your child’s reach, then this will enable you to focus on your driving and maintain an organized car.
• Take frequent rest stops at designated rest areas off interstate highways or at gas stations. Allow your child to run around outside if it is safe to do so. If your child needs a visual cue to know when the next stop will be, bring along a timer and set it for 60 minutes. This way, your child knows that when the timer goes off, they will be able to get out of the car. Alternately, you can ask an older child to time the interval on the clock in the car and then pull the car over for a break at the intended time.
• If you know your child enjoys playgrounds, research playgrounds along your route in advance. Tell your child that the next stop will be at a playground so they will have something to look forward to.
• Try to plan your trip around times of the day that are routine nap times or bed times. You may choose to start your trip at night when your child normally goes to sleep. This will (hopefully) ensure your child will be asleep for a good portion of the ride.
• Get a map and draw a line along your route. Show your child each city and state you are passing through. Use a line to show your child where you are “now” and where you need to drive before you get to your final destination.
• If your child has an oversensitivity to sound, take a look at this transcript from the National Public Radio weekly show, Car Talk Hosts Ray and Tom Magliozzi (otherwise known as Click & Clack) discuss cost-effective options for minimizing road noises that can be painful to children with autism.
• Make customized activity bags for each child. If the trip is long, give your child a couple of items at a time so that the novelty does not wear off shortly after the trip begins. Have some old as well as new toys and activities in each bag. Examples include: a new coloring book, hand-held games like ball mazes or Rubik’s cubes, interactive books (with flaps, hidden pictures, or stickers), Legos, a soft squeeze ball.
• Pre-load an iPad with old and new games for single or multiplayers, and kid-friendly television shows and movies.
• Bring headphones with a variety of music to include calm instrumental songs for relaxation, kid-friendly tunes, and any other favorites.
• Bingo game: before your trip, prepare a Bingo sheet using pictures or words of things frequently seen on the road.
• Alphabet game: take turns finding things that start with a designated letter until you get through the entire alphabet.
• License plate game: write down all the license plates you see from different states and see how many you can find by the end of your trip.

While Traveling by Plane

It is a good idea to have earplugs or noise-canceling headphones for your child. If this is your child’s first time on an airplane, be sure to discuss the sights and sounds of the airplane ride prior to and during your flight.

• Try to minimize the number of connecting flights. It is easier to find a direct flight if you book early.
• Children with autism often have difficulty coping with the “popping” of their ears as the airplane ascends and descends. Many children do not understand this phenomenon. Give your child gum, hard candy, chew toys, or a drink during this portion of the plane ride; this encourages swallowing and reduces the effects of their ears popping.
• Contact the airport where you will be departing, explain your child’s diagnosis, and request a time to come to the airport and do a “dry run” of what your child should expect. The airport may allow you to come during a time of day where it is less crowded and let you walk through exactly what will happen on the day you leave, even allowing you to walk your child through the security gate. 
• If there is a layover at an airport, research the airport in advance to see if there is a child’s indoor play area. More and more airports are offering these. Take advantage of the play area, if available, and let your child run around, climb, play, and slide in order to get some energy out and be ready to sit for the next leg of your trip.
• Some airports have a USO Lounge that serves as a quiet haven for military personnel and their families. These lounges provide free amenities, including snacks, internet access, and TVs. Be sure to have your Military and/or Dependent ID cards handy.
• If your child is a picky eater or has allergies and if your airline will serve one or more meals during the coming flight, contact the airline in advance to ask if they offer special meals or have an alternate meal option. For example, you may find that the vegetarian meal provides more food that your child will eat than the regular meal. Do not forget to plan for favorite snacks ahead of time as well.
• Arrive at the airport in plenty of time for your flight. Explain to the airline at check-in that your child has autism and request bulkhead seating (at the front of the economy section). Provide proof of diagnosis as reinforcement. The front seat will give you a little extra leg room and will likely put you close to a restroom. If looking out the window will be interesting for your child, request a window seat. On the other hand, if your child may become anxious at the thought of being in the air, request an aisle seat or an inside seat. If the flight will not be full, request a row to yourself.
• Go through the security checkpoint early to avoid the crowds. Give the security guard an information card that explains autism and increases their understanding of why your child may not follow the instructions.
• Board the airplane at the first call for special boarding. Having a child with autism requires extra time to find your seat and get comfortable. This will also give you extra time to briefly talk to the airline attendant(s) about your child’s special needs. Give them an information card if necessary.
• Bring earplugs or noise-canceling headphones for your child.
• If you have a child who is a frequent wanderer, it may greatly benefit you to invest in a type of personal locator product in the form of a watch or attachable belt unit. With all of the other things you need to keep track of, such as luggage, carry-on bags, other children, and plane tickets, this may ease your worries should your child wander out of sight when you turn away for a moment to dig in your bag.
• A less expensive way to track your child is to get a military-style dog tag made with your child’s information (name, age, parents’ names and contact information, allergies, and other pertinent information, such as specifying if your child is nonverbal). You can also get a bracelet made with the same information.
• Or, get creative and pin the same information on a small laminated index card attached to your child’s shirt or shoelace. For an older, verbal child, teach the child their name, age, parents’ names, and a phone number to call. Role play a scenario in which your child accidentally gets lost. Discuss the “Information Booth” at airports and how your child can find one. Write key words down for your child on an index card, such as “Information” and “Lost.”
• Carry a recent photo of your child to show to security personnel in case your child wanders.

AIG Travel Guard is a well-established and highly rated name in the travel insurance industry. It offers three main coverage options to choose from, and in general its policies have above-average coverage for baggage loss and baggage delays, plus high medical evaluation coverage limits. AIG Travel Guard Travel Insurance Summary

AIG Travel Guard is among the best travel insurance companies with impressive coverage limits, even with its basic plan, Travel Guard Essential. It's emergency medical evacuation coverage is particularly high, making Travel Guard a good choice for insuring cruises, as sea to land evacuations are often expensive. 

Additionally, Travel Guard's Premium and Deluxe plans offer coverage that many of its competitors don't, such as its travel inconvenience coverage and ancillary evacuation coverage.  

That said, Travel Guard is on the pricey side, compared with its competitors. While age is often a factor in your insurance premiums, Travel Guard tends to quote older travelers higher rates than its competitors. However, you often get what you pay for. In Travel Guard's case, you'll find that its coverage justifies its higher rates. 

While great coverage is important, it's also crucial that an insurance company has a smooth claims process, which Travel Guard lacks, according to its customer reviews. Across 135 reviews on its Trustpilot page, AIG Travel Guard received an average of 1.2 stars, with 95% of reviewers giving the company one star. Surprisingly, AIG Travel Guard fares even worse with the Better Business Bureau, receiving an average of 1.08 stars out of five across 301 reviews. 

Coverage Options Offered by AIG Travel Guard

AIG Travel Guard offers three primary plans: Travel Guard Essential, Travel Guard Preferred, and Travel Guard Deluxe. Each plan has different coverage limits and various types of protection.

Here's a look at what you'll get with each plan:

Depending on the policy you select, additional coverages may be included at no extra charge, such as a pre-existing conditions waiver , single occupancy fee coverage, worldwide travel and medical assistance services, and more. Be sure to check each policy closely to see what is and isn't covered.

Each of these plans also includes coverage for one child under 17 as long as their travel costs are equal to or under the adult's cost. Additional coverage does not apply to the child.

AIG Travel Guard Pack N' Go Plan

In addition to these three primary plans, Travel Guard offers the Pack N' Go policy along with an Annual plan. This policy is for last-minute travelers who don't need trip cancellation coverage.

This plan includes:

• Trip interruption and trip delay ($200 per day maximum) up to $1,000
• Missed connection up to $500
• Baggage delay up to $200 and baggage coverage up to $1,000
• Medical expenses up to $25,000 and dental expenses up to $500
• Emergency evacuation and repatriation of remains up to $500,000.

AIG Travel Guard Annual Plan

Taking multiple trips throughout the year? Consider the Travel Guard Annual plan instead of purchasing a new policy for each adventure. This plan comes with coverage for: 

• Trip interruption coverage  up to $2,500
• Trip delay coverag e up to $1,500 ($150 per day maximum)
• Missed connection coverag e up to $500
• Baggage delay coverage up to $1,000 and lost/damaged baggage coverage up to $2,500
• Medical expenses coverage up to $50,000 and dental expenses up to $500
• Emergency evacuation coverage and repatriation of remains up to $500,000
• Accidental death and dismemberment coverage up to $50,000 and security evacuation up to $100,000

Additional Coverage Options from AIG Travel Guard

Like many other travel insurance providers, Travel Guard offers add-ons for an additional cost. These can be selected while you're purchasing your policy.

The availability of these add-ons depends on the policy you're buying. Note also that some are already included in the Preferred and Deluxe plans. 

• Medical bundle — Increases coverage amounts for medical expenses and evacuation and adds hospital of choice and additional evacuation benefits.  
• Security bundle — Provides various coverages for trip interruption or cancellation due to riot or civil disorder.  
• Rental vehicle damage coverage — Reimburses a predetermined amount for physical damage to a rental car in the policyholder's name. 
• Cancel for Any Reason Insurance (CFAR) — This is just what it sounds like. Cancel for any reason coverage will reimburse 75% of nonrefundable expenses when you cancel your trip for any reason, up to 48 hours before your scheduled departure. CFAR coverage is only available for Travel Guard's Deluxe and Preferred plans. 
• Inconvenience bundle — Offers reimbursement for inconveniences like closed attractions, credit/debit card cancellation, hotel construction, and more.
• Pet bundle coverage — Daily travel benefit for boarding and medical expense coverage for illness or injury of dog or cat. Includes trip cancellation or interruption coverage if the pet is in critical condition or dies within seven days before the departure date.
• Adventure sports bundle — Removes the exclusions for adventure and extreme activities.
• Baggage bundle — Your baggage coverage with AIG becomes primary with increased coverage and baggage delay benefits. 
• Wedding bundle — Provides trip cancellation coverage due to wedding cancellation (brides and grooms not covered).
• Name a family member bundle — One person can be named as a Family Member for the purpose of family member-related unforeseen event coverage.

How to Purchase and Manage Your AIG Policy

Getting a quote from AIG Travel Guard is quick and easy. Head to the AIG website and enter basic information about the trip you're looking to cover. You'll get an instant quote for the insurance plans available for your trip, so it's easy to compare each option. Be prepared to provide information including:

• Your state of residence
• Date of birth
• The cost of your trip
• Travel dates
• Destination
• Method of travel

We ran a few simulations to offer examples of how much a Travel Guard policy might cost. You'll see that costs usually fall within 5-7% of the total trip cost, depending on the policy tier you choose.

As of April 2024, a 23-year-old from Illinois taking a weeklong, $3,000 budget trip to Italy would have the following  Travel Guard travel insurance quotes:

• Travel Guard Essential: $86.96
• Travel Guard Preferred: $152.01
• Travel Guard Deluxe: $188.59

Premiums for Travel Guard's various single trip plans are between 2.8% and 6.3%, well within, and even below, the average cost of travel insurance .

A 30-year-old traveler from California is heading to Japan for two weeks, costing $4,000. The Travel Guard travel insurance quotes are:

Premiums for Travel Guard's various single trip plans are between 5% and 7.6%, within the average cost of travel insurance.

A couple of 65-year-olds looking to escape New York for Mexico for two weeks with a trip cost of $6,000 would have the following Travel Guard quotes:

Premiums for Travel Guard's various single trip plans range between 7.9% and 13.9%, which is significantly higher than the average cost. That said, travel insurance is often more expensive as you get older. 

AIG Travel Guard Annual Plan Cost

Getting a quote for the annual plan requires much less information, only asking for the intended policy start date, your state of residence, and how many people you plan to insure. Quotes from AIG remained at $259 per traveler, regardless of state of residence and number of travelers.

Filing a claim with Travel Guard is a straightforward process. You'll need your policy number and can either go to travelguard.com or call Travel Guard at 866-478-8222 to start the claim. Once submitted, you can check the status of your claim at claims.travelguard.com/status.

AIG Travel Guard vs. Nationwide Travel Insurance

Nationwide is a household name when it comes to insurance providers and one of the largest and most recognized insurance providers in the US. Similarly to Travel Guard , Nationwide makes it easy to find coverage by offering just two single-trip plans: the Essential and Prime plan.  

In addition, Nationwide offers plans specifically designed for cruises along with annual trip insurance for those who travel a lot throughout the year.  

The Nationwide Essential Plan comes with trip cancellation coverage of up to $10,000, up to $250,000 in emergency medical evacuation, up to $150 per day reimbursement for travel delays of 6+ hours, and coverage for delayed or lost baggage.

In comparison, the Travel Guard Essential plan covers trip cancellations with up to $100,0000 in coverage, up to $150,000 in emergency medical evacuation expenses, up to $100 per day ($500 total) for trip delays of 12+ hours, along with lost or delayed baggage coverage. 

The high-tier Prime Plan from Nationwide offers even more coverage, including trip cancellation up to $30,000, trip interruption coverage up to 200% of the trip cost (maximum of $60,000), missed connection and itinerary change coverage of $500 each, $250 per day for trip delays of 6+ hours, and up to $1 million in coverage for emergency medical evacuation

AIG's highest-tier Deluxe plan comes with trip cancellation coverage of up to $150,000, up to $1,000,000 in emergency medical evacuation, up to $200 per day ($1,000 maximum) reimbursement for travel delays of 12+ hours, and coverage for delayed or lost baggage.

As you can see, it's hard to compare apples to apples when comparing the two different insurance providers. But it helps to know the specifics of the coverages that matter most to you.

AIG Travel Guard vs. Allianz Travel Insurance

With Allianz Travel Insurance , you can choose from 10 different insurance plans to find one that suits your needs. Like Travel Guard , it offers one-off policies for specific trips and an annual travel insurance plan for those who take multiple trips a year. Similar to AIG, too, the different plans offer varying levels of coverage. 

Allianz's most popular single-trip option is the OneTrip Prime plan. This plan offers trip cancellation coverage up to $100,000, trip interruption coverage up to $150,000, emergency medical coverage for $50,000, coverage for baggage loss, theft, or damage up to $1,000, and up to $800 in travel delay coverage.

The most similar plan from Travel Guard is the mid-tier Travel Guard Preferred plan, which which you'll get up to $150,000 in trip cancellation coverage, trip interruption coverage up to $225,000, $50,000 in emergency medical coverage, coverage for baggage loss, theft, or damage up to $1,000, and travel delay coverage of up to $800.

A variety of factors will determine the final cost of any of these travel insurance policies. However, when comparing quotes with the same factors, Allianz tends to be cheaper. Additionally, Travel Guard seems to be more sensitive to the traveler's age. However, it's best to compare quotes using your specific personal and trip details to determine which policy is the best for you.

AIG Travel Guard vs. Credit Card Travel Insurance

Before purchasing a travel insurance plan, take a look at the coverage offered through your travel rewards credit cards. Some of the basic coverages you're looking for, like rental car insurance, may already be available through credit card travel protection . 

The coverage you have on your credit card couple be sufficient if, for example, you're taking a road trip by car and you don't have any non-refundable trip expenses. It could also be enough if your health insurance covers you while you travel and you aren't overly worried about incurring additional medical expenses during your trip.

It's also worth remembering that credit card coverage is usually secondary versus the primary coverage you'd get with a travel insurance policy. Meaning you'll have to file a claim with the other applicable insurance (like through the airline travel provider) before filing a claim with your credit card company.

There’s just about any kind of international cuisine you can imagine throughout Santa Clara.

Santa Clara is known as The Mission City and as we go through the safety advice, we’ll explain why.

• Warnings & Dangers in Santa Clara

OVERALL RISK: LOW

There's a low overall risk here. This is a safe community with a lot of safe options.

TRANSPORT & TAXIS RISK: LOW

You've got the Valley Transit Authority (VTA) for bus service and light rail that runs through all of Silicon Valley. The Bay Area Rapid Transit System (BART) is not connected to Santa Clara as of early 2022. There are plans for expansion down the road. Taxis and rideshares are safely available too.

PICKPOCKETS RISK: LOW

With just 10 reports of pickpockets and purse snatching, that's a low risk. The biggest thefts were from cars, so keep it locked up and empty, with all valuables being inside your hotel room or with you, if needed.

NATURAL DISASTERS RISK: MEDIUM

Santa Clara is in a highly active earthquake zone. You might feel a few rumbles, but to people in this area, it's as common as a severe thunderstorm in the Midwest. There is a chance for a major earthquake at all times, but it's just a commonly accepted risk here. That's a medium risk just due to the potential for a big quake, and it means you should study earthquake safety before you go.

MUGGING RISK: LOW

There were just a handful of highway robberies in Santa Clara in 2020, so that's a low risk. Cars are more likely to get "mugged" than people.

TERRORISM RISK: MEDIUM

This is a critical area for the IT security and national safety of the United States, so that's going to come with medium risk. Homeland Security does focus extra attention on these bigger target areas, so you don't need to do anything additional except stay vigilant and if you see something suspicious, report it.

SCAMS RISK: LOW

There are a handful of scams in this area, but they focus on locals. One to be wary of is a person claiming to be the mayor and saying you've won a lottery or jackpot. Don't fall for it. There's a low risk this will happen to you, but never believe something that seems too good to be true.

WOMEN TRAVELERS RISK: LOW

No part of the crime numbers shows this city is any more dangerous for women than men. There's a low risk.

TAP WATER RISK: LOW

The Bay area is known for having some of the best tap water in the country and Santa Clara falls in line with that. All water meets or exceeds standards and is tested several times daily. There's a low risk.

• Safest Places to Visit in Santa Clara

Great America Park is a wonderful way to spend the day.

There’s a lot of something for everyone in the family, from death-defying rollercoasters to water rides to carnival games.

Get into the sporting mood by taking in a game or event at Levi’s Stadium.

This is the home of the San Francisco 49ers.

Even on non-game days, you can check out the on-site museum with the history of the football team.

Techies will love the Intel Museum.

It’s closed on Sundays, but open free to the public every other day, except holidays.

Santa Clara has many unique communities to visit. Santana Row offers classic San Francisco-style charm on a tree-lined street loaded with shopping and dining choices.

The Rivermark neighborhood is great to drive around and see the different styles of homes and condos while having unique restaurants.

Franklin Square offers a farmer’s market on Saturdays with some fresh-picked fruit from the fields of Northern California in a laid-back setting.

If you need to get in some shopping, The Great Mall is one of the biggest and best choices.

This is an interior outlet mall with more than 200 stores.

Santa Clara Town Centre has more of the familiar brands with national food chains tucked in.

No matter what religion you are, seeing the missions of California is just so invigorating.

The Mission Santa Clara de Asis is located on the grounds of Santa Clara University, one of the oldest higher education options in the state.

This mission has been destroyed and rebuilt no less than five times of its lifespan, and is why the city is known as The Mission City.

• Places to Avoid in Santa Clara

Crime maps show the area just to the west of the San Jose airport has the highest number of crimes.

There’s a stretch along Highway 101 which has crime, but it’s pretty common for areas along freeways to have crime.

Neighbors describe the area as having “pockets” of less desirable areas, but not “bad neighborhoods.”

As far as where you stay and where you should avoid, one big complaint I saw online is the train and/or rail line noise.

You should ask when you are considering booking if there is:

• Freeway noise
• Train noise
• Lightrail noise
• Airport noise

Santa Clara is right next to the larger city of San Jose, so you might get some spillover of criminals from there.

It’s not the gang-infested city some places in Northern California can be, but it does have a little more edge to it than nearby Sunnyvale.

The biggest complaints I hear from neighbors there are the petty thefts like car break-ins, vandalism, and a few home burglaries.

This is a city that hasn’t had more than three homicides in any year all the way back to 2010.

• Safety Tips for Traveling to Santa Clara
• Text BADWEATHER to 888777. This will get you weather alerts right to your mobile device from the Santa Clara County Emergency Operations team.
• The power might go off during thunderstorms, but it’s not what you think. The utility pre-emptively turns off the power in what’s called a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS). This is to prevent the winds or lightning from knocking down power poles or transformers that will then start a wildfire. Many of the big first in California are started by power line equipment. It’s inconvenient, yes, but the people of Northern California are used to it. Keep your devices charged as much as you can here in case you are affected by a PSPS.
• You’ll want to keep the 511 app and CalTrans information handy if you are leaving Santa Clara to visit the greater Bay area. Traffic here is insane. Any help you can get will be very appreciated and CalTrans does a great job of updating incidents as they happen.
• The police department updates crime statistics monthly and posts them online, being very transparent with the crime landscape. This is a great place to check before your trip to see if there’s a crime wave happening before your visit.
• Keep your wallet in your front pocket instead of your back pocket. It seems this advice from several police stations in my recent research. Wear pants that have a button, so you can button in that wallet pocket.
• If you do find yourself the victim of a non-violent crime, you can report it online without having to call a police officer and fill out a report. This is helpful, so you can continue with your trip and not get delayed.
• You can also report crimes you see happening through an online portal. This is for things like graffiti, lost property, or fraud.
• The Santa Clara Police use Nixle to send out alerts to the community. Once you sign up, you can see incidents like missing people, standoffs, accidents that shutdown roads, etc. This is a great tool for getting to know the dangers of any community quickly.
• If you get a rental car, ask if you can get one with an alarm. Car break-ins are one of the most likely crimes in Santa Clara, according to the police department. It’s important to break the habit of stashing things in the trunk throughout the day and then leaving the vehicle unattended. All valuables should be taken back to the residence or hotel for safe keeping.
• It might be worth taking some time to learn basic Korean words before you go.  Koreatown is a very popular part of Santa Clara. I was going to give you a few of those words here, but, the phonetics are tricky, so a YouTube video or a training service might be a better option.
• So... How Safe Is Santa Clara Really?

I’ve done a lot of research on safety in cities in my career, and I can say generally I see crimes rates that look like this:

• Violent Crime: 1 in 200 chance
• Theft Crime: 1 in 50 chance

Here’s how Santa Clara compares:

• Violent Crime: 1 in 619
• Theft Crime: 1 in 55

This isn’t a place where crazy violent crimes happen often.

It’s an upscale community with an average income of $126,000 and people live in a home that costs, again on average, $1 million.

It’s definitely a busy side of Silicon Valley, with as much for tourists to do as there is for locals.

You’re also nestled up to San Jose, and right by the airport.

That could bring more crime.

Even the people who discuss their beloved city on social media say the worst crimes they see are car break-ins and vandalism, and it doesn’t seem to bother them too much.

Visa requirements are handled at the airport. No other identification is needed to get into Santa Clara.

You'll use the U.S. Dollar here. There's little need for carrying around cash, and it's safer if you just use a credit card for purchases. Notify your bank before you go so you can set a purchase limit notification.

Just gorgeous weather is slated throughout the year. In winter, you'll get highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s, so bring a coat or jacket, depending on how "cold" you think that is. Summers warm up to the 80s for highs but drop back down to the 50s for lows. If you don't have the space for it, it's okay not to bring any rain gear. The city doesn't get much on average.

The San Jose airport is really close, just 4 miles away. San Francisco's airport is going to be a further drive, around 40 minutes, but plan for an hour to include traffic. You don't drive over any bridges to get there (if you happen to be scared of bridges, like me.) Oakland's airport is about 45 minutes away. You have a choice of driving over one of two bridges if you like them, or you can stay on land the whole time.

Travel Insurance

You'll want travel insurance for your trip, as fog can easily disrupt traffic in this area and cancel or delay flights.

Although Study Abroad at Santa Clara University is competitive during the regular academic year (Fall, Winter, Spring), this is not true for summer. So long as students meet program eligibility requirements and submit a complete application by the deadline, they will be nominated.

Global Engagement Fellowships are fully-funded virtual experiences that focus on pillars of innovation and community engagement that are integral to global learning and intercultural connections. These fellowships support global engagement by providing opportunities to students to focus on community organizing, collaborative innovation, advocacy, intercultural communication, and global perspectives.
