The Ultimate Insider‘s Guide to Visiting Keeneland

As a decades-long Kentucky resident and horse racing enthusiast, I‘ve spent countless days over the years at the famous Keeneland race track. Whether you‘re looking to experience those two thrilling minutes on the track or just soak up the iconic Bluegrass charm, this comprehensive guide will equip you with expert tips to make the most of your visit.

Purchasing Tickets

While walk-up tickets may be available on some days, I highly recommend buying your Keeneland tickets online in advance. This guarantees entry and allows you to skip the on-site ticket queues, which can get long on popular race days.

Here‘s an overview of the main Keeneland ticket options:

General Admission

  • Access to grounds, paddock, general seating
  • Prices range from $5 on weekdays to $60 for major events
  • Allows mobility to view races from various spots

Reserved Seating

  • Guaranteed seat in Grandstand, Clubhouse, etc.
  • Prices range from $10 bleacher seats to $500+ for premium
  • Best for groups who want to sit together

Tables and Boxes

  • Upscale reserved spaces for 6-8 people
  • Range from $400-$1000+
  • Include premium views and VIP amenities

Single-Day Passes

  • Access for one race day
  • $5-$60 depending on the date
  • Flexible for visitors in town for a limited time

Multi-Day/Season Passes

  • Access for a multi-day period or full season
  • Range from $25 for a 3-day pass to $50+ for a season pass
  • Great value for locals or frequent visitors

Not sure which ticket to purchase? Here‘s my insider tip: go for a General Admission on your first Keeneland visit. This allows you to explore the grounds and get the true Keeneland experience. Snag reserved seats once you identify your favorite vantage points for future races.

Comparing Ticket Prices

To give you a better sense of the price range, here‘s a look at average ticket costs for different seating sections:

As you can see, Derby and Oaks tickets carry a premium, but deals can be found on lower key race days.

Dress Code and Attire

The overall vibe at Keeneland is classy but casual. While formal wear is not required, most patrons dress smartly out of Keeneland tradition and respect.

Recommended Attire

For men: Slacks or dark jeans, button-down or polo shirt, blazer or sport coat, loafers or ankle boots.

For women: Sundress, skirt, slacks, cocktail dress, blouses, sweaters, flats or low heels.

Accessories: Scarves, hats, and sunglasses are popular touches.

The most important things are to wear comfortable shoes for walking the grounds and check the weather forecast to dress accordingly. Bring layers in case of temperature drops!

Parking and Transportation

Keeneland has over 5,000 parking spaces spread across multiple lots around the facility. Here are some key tips for navigating parking:

  • Parking costs $10 on weekdays and $20 on weekends per car. Buses and RVs are a bit more.
  • Buy parking passes online or upon arrival – have cash ready for on-site purchase.
  • Allow extra time to walk from remote lots if arriving at peak times.
  • Consider a taxi, Uber, Lextran bus, or carpooling to save on parking fees.

I recommend using Gate 2 or Gate 3 for easiest Grandstand access. Gates open 2 hours prior to first post time.

Making the Most of Major Events

Marquee events like the Kentucky Oaks and Derby see crowds of over 100,000! Here are my top insider tips for navigating these exciting races:

  • Buy tickets WAY in advance – 6 months ahead or more.
  • Expect extra traffic, airport congestion, crowded parking.
  • Leave early and account for travel – plan for a 2 hour trip.
  • Dress code is enforced more strictly – stick to suits, dressy dresses, fancy hats.
  • Escape the hustle and bustle in the Paddock area.
  • Mornings are less crowded – come early to explore!

Getting the Best Ticket Value

As a savvy Keeneland veteran, I‘ve picked up some strategies for getting the best bang for your buck on tickets:

  • Shoot for Tuesday-Thursday races – lowest prices and crowds.
  • Avoid weekends – prices jump 50% or more.
  • Buy General Admission – then scout out seat preferences for next time.
  • Purchase season passes if planning several visits.
  • Check resale sites close to event for last minute deals.
  • Morning is the most affordable time for Derby/Oaks.

Booking your tickets at just the right time is key to maximize value. Here‘s my tip: Buy Derby tickets in Nov-Dec, Oaks tickets in Jan-Feb, and other races 1 month out. You‘ll get the best rates before demand spikes.

Navigating the Grounds Like a Pro

With nearly 200 acres and multiple structures, Keeneland can seem like a maze at first. Here‘s an overview of the main areas and insider tips to get oriented:

  • Grandstand – Prime seating for races with wagering available. Near main entrance.
  • Clubhouse – Elevated tiered seating and dining room. More formal.
  • Track Kitchen – Casual concession stand featuring Southern classics.
  • Paddock – Where horses are saddled pre-race – less crowded!
  • Equestrian Room -Gift shop at lobby houses unique Kentucky items.
  • Walking Ring – Parade horses before races here. Get close to the action!

Gates open at 11am on race days – arrive early to enjoy everything Keeneland has to offer!

What to Wear for the Weather

Keeneland seasons span warm sunny days, chilly weather, and everything in between. Here are my insider tips on dressing for Keeneland through the year:

Spring Races (April)

  • Light layers like sweaters, cardigans, jackets
  • Sundresses, skirts with tights
  • Boots or booties
  • Baseball caps for sun protection

Summer Races (October)

  • Lightweight summer dresses or skirts
  • Short sleeve button-downs or polos
  • Sandals or low wedges
  • Sunhats and sunglasses

Fall Races (October-November)

  • Long sleeve shirts under sweaters
  • Blazers, leggings under dresses
  • Tall boots or booties
  • Scarves, gloves

Breeders‘ Cup (November)

  • Suits, cocktail dresses, dressy hats (no fascinators)
  • Cashmere coats, leather gloves
  • Closed toe shoes/heels for ladies

No matter when you visit, check the forecast and prep for all weather conditions! April and November can be quite cool.

Enjoying Family Fun

While children are admitted free most days, Parents should note:

  • Kids under 18 require tickets on major event days
  • Children 3-5 must be accompanied by an adult
  • Strollers allowed but not in seating areas
  • Designated family restrooms available
  • Kids welcome at The Pub year-round

I recommend visiting midweek when crowds are smaller for easiest family navigation. Kids will especially love petting horses in the paddock and picking souvenirs at gift shops!

Capacity Restrictions and Reservations

Due to COVID-19, Keeneland has implemented capacity restrictions and reservations:

  • All guests must have timed reservations booked online
  • Reservations available starting 2 weeks before events
  • Limited tickets released for each date/time
  • Allows social distancing and crowd control

Be sure to book both reservations AND tickets for your desired date/time slot well in advance. This new system keeps guests safely spaced.

Year-Round Offerings

While racing gets the glory, Keeneland offers attractions all year:

  • Guided Tours – Book online. Offered daily except major event weeks.
  • Gift Shop – Open year-round featuring Keeneland-branded and Kentucky items.
  • Walking Path – A dirt recreation path circling the track. Open to public.
  • Track Kitchen – Serving breakfast, lunch, dinner all seasons.
  • Library – Racing history and memorabilia. Free to visit Tu-Sa.

No races? No problem! From gift shopping to exploring the grounds, there‘s plenty to enjoy at Keeneland any time.

I hope this guide provides tons of handy tips and gives you the confidence to navigate Keeneland like a seasoned pro. With your tickets in hand and outfit on point, you‘re ready to soak in the sights, sounds, and excitement of this legendary Kentucky track. Let me know if you have any other questions – I‘m always happy to share insider secrets to ensure you have an absolutely unforgettable Keeneland experience!

A First Timer’s Guide to Keeneland

October 27, 2014 By Caroline Eubanks Leave a Comment

keeneland

While I’ve been to the Aiken Steeplechase in the past, Kentucky is on another playing field when it comes to horse racing . And while the Kentucky Derby is certainly the most well-known, it’s Keeneland that brings in true horse lovers from both Lexington and around the country.

The track opened in 1936 by leaders in Thoroughbred breeding as a non-profit facility. The races, held regularly in April and October, have some of the biggest prizes in North America. It’s also the world’s leading Thoroughbred auction house, boasting past champions from the Breeder’s Cup, Preakness, Kentucky Derby, Belmont and many more. If you’re interested in the history side of Keeneland, you can take tours of the facility, watch the morning workouts or check out the Keeneland Library.

Tips for Attending Keeneland

1. Know the schedule. Races are only in October and April, so schedule your visit during this time. But be sure to book a hotel room in advance, as many places are sold out during big races. There’s also a college day, where University of Kentucky and Transylvania University students are admitted for free, as well as other special events.

2. Dress the part. As with other horse races in the South, you’ll see lots of dressing up as Keeneland is the place to see and be seen. This is especially important, as in many parts of the facility, you won’t be admitted in denim or athletic shoes. In the fall races, you’ll see lots of boots and scarves, especially when it’s cold in the grandstands. In spring, you’ll see the standard pastels and seersucker.

keeneland

3. Get a seat. Admission ranges depending on what you want. General admission is $5 and does not include a seat, but you can grab a bench or bring in your own lawn chair. Many of these ticket holders end up hanging out in the sports bar for views on the television screen.

Grandstand seats range from $5-10, depending on the race. Boxes are hard to come by, as they offer some of the best views, but are passed down by families. The clubhouse level, open only to members, also has windows facing the course.

4. Place your bets. Gambling is a big part of horse racing, but if you’ve never done it before, fear not. There are desks around the track with people called “BETologists” to help you wager on the right horse or answer any questions you may have about how it all works. Bets typically start at $2.

Bets for Keeneland

5. Grab a bite. During your day at the races, you’ll surely want some food and drinks and Keeneland has plenty of options. Basics like hot dogs and chicken fingers are available on the general admission level, as well as beers costing around $6 and cocktails ranging from $7-15. The clubhouse also has a restaurant where you can get favorites like the Hot Brown or a Reuben.

6. Make a plan. As Keeneland is located a few minutes from downtown Lexington, you’ll need to arrange a way to get there. If you’re interested in tailgating, you’ll want to get there early for free parking. Additional parking and valet is also available for a fee.

The Lextran trolley runs from many locations to the track for a fare of $1. If you’re in a big group, it’s smart to arrange a shuttle for the duration of the day. Otherwise, try Uber and Lyft , both of which run in Lexington. Just remember that traffic can get hectic leaving the race, so you might want to leave early or plan extra time.

Looking for a place to stay while you’re in Lexington for Keeneland? The Comfort Suites Keeneland , Steele’s Run Bed and Breakfast , and Origin Hotel Lexington are all convenient to Keeneland.

Keeneland Celebrates Springtime with April 8 Opening of Spring Meet

Prestigious races, new tools for fans and horseplayers, Spanish coverage on tap

LEXINGTON, KY (March 31, 2022) – Keeneland’s 15-day Spring Meet, which features the 98 th running of the $1 million Toyota Blue Grass (G1), opens Friday, April 8 with a celebration of the season led by world-class Thoroughbred racing, family-friendly on-track special events, tailgating on The Hill and digital information options for fans and horseplayers. New this meet are the online Patron Experience Guide, designed to help patrons plan their day at the races, and complimentary Trip Note Pros, which give handicappers detailed trip analysis for contenders in each race.

Racing at Keeneland promises to be unmatched this spring. Keeneland will award a record $7.7 million for 19 stakes to be run during the season – all of which boast increased purses. Classic preps are the centerpiece of the first two days of the race meet as the opening-day card now includes the 85 th running of the Central Bank Ashland (G1), worth a stakes-record $600,000, for 3-year-old fillies. The following day, NBC will televise the Toyota Blue Grass, which has returned to Grade 1 status and again will be worth $1 million for 3-year-olds.

The post position draw for the Toyota Blue Grass will be held April 6 at 12:15 p.m. ET and be livestreamed on Keeneland.com and Keeneland’s YouTube channel .

During the Spring Meet, races begin at 1 p.m. each day except for April 9 – Toyota Blue Grass Day – and April 29 – closing day of the season – when first post is 12:30 p.m. On April 29, Keeneland will begin its April Horses of Racing Age Sale in the Sales Pavilion at 6:30 p.m. following the races.

Know before you go – Spring Meet ticket availability

As Keeneland welcomes fans for the Spring Meet, the track continues to strive to offer the highest quality on-site guest experience. Toward that goal, Keeneland has launched a new Patron Experience Guide to provide guests helpful tips and tools to assist them during their day at the races. Fans are asked to visit the site to familiarize themselves with Keeneland prior to arriving at the track.

Once again, all General Admission, Reserved Seat and Dining tickets must be pre-purchased online through Keeneland’s Official Online Ticket Office at tickets.Keeneland.com or on the Keeneland Race Day app .

Demand for tickets is high, but Grandstand reserved seat and General Admission tickets remain available. Keeneland offers a ticket return policy of up to 48 hours in advance of race day, so inventory is updated automatically and available for purchase. Fans are encouraged to check tickets.Keeneland.com frequently for updates and sign up for ticketing alerts.

In addition, season passes – which offer General Admission throughout the meet – are available for $40. Season passes may be purchased through Tuesday, April 5.

Cash and walk-up purchases on race days will be permitted only at the Welcome Center Ticket Office windows if tickets remain available.

Tailgating on The Hill

No ticket or reservation is required for Keeneland’s popular free tailgating area on The Hill, which is open Fridays and Saturdays and offers a unique way to experience the Spring Meet. Fans on The Hill can participate in the racing action via a jumbo TV and wagering, while food trucks and live music presented by The Burl create a festive atmosphere.

Those who wish to elevate their tailgating experience can book a premium package that includes tent, tables, amenities, reserved area for the day and more with the Tailgate Guys “A REVELxp Company.” Visit Keeneland.com/tailgating for details.

Keeneland en Español among tools for Spanish-speaking racing fans

Keeneland again will offer ways to engage Spanish-speaking fans of Thoroughbred racing during the Spring Meet, continuing its partnership with DRF en Español to provide Spanish coverage of opening weekend with host and handicapper Roberto Rodriguez and race caller David Merida.

The schedule for Spanish coverage of the April 8-10 opening weekend is:

  • 10 a.m.: “Keeneland Hoy!,” a 45-minute preview show.
  • 12:30 p.m. on April 8 and 10: “Keeneland en Español,” with full race-day coverage including race calls, analysis and interviews.
  • Noon on April 9, day of the Toyota Blue Grass when the first race is 12:30 p.m.: “Keeneland en Español.”

For more details, visit the Keeneland en Español page on Keeneland.com. The live broadcast of opening weekend is available on YouTube on the Keeneland en Español channel and the DRF en Español channel .

For the entire Spring Meet, tools for Spanish-speaking fans of Keeneland include:

  • Keeneland’s popular Race Day app, which is available in Spanish for fans whose native language is set to Spanish on their iPhone or Android device;
  • La Referencia, a complimentary publication with analysis and detailed handicapping information, which is being presented by Keeneland and DRF en Español for fans to download; and
  • Rodriguez’s race-day Spanish analysis, which will be posted on the popular Expert Picks section of Keeneland.com.

These Keeneland initiatives extend a partnership that began during the 2020 Fall Meet with the founding of DRF en Español.

Keeneland Turf Pick 3 leads wagering action

The Spring Meet offers special wagers and competitions for casual to experienced handicappers.

Returning this season is the Keeneland Turf Pick 3 , which was well received when it debuted during the 2021 Fall Meet. The wager, which requires a $3 minimum, is offered on the final three turf races of the day’s card.

On opening day, the Lafayette, Kentucky Utilities Transylvania (G3) and Central Bank Ashland will be included in late Pick 4 and late Pick 5 wagers. The Kentucky Utilities Transylvania will be part of the Keeneland Turf Pick 3.

The next day, the All-Stakes Pick 4 and All Stakes Pick 5 will conclude with the Toyota Blue Grass.

Keeneland races on Saturdays also will be included in the Cross Country multi-race wager offered by the New York Racing Association.

For the first time during the Spring Meet, handicappers will be able to obtain complimentary Trip Note Pros of detailed trip analysis for contenders in every race. Sign up at Keeneland.com/tripnotepros to receive a link to access the data.

Additional handicapping events during the season include:

Wednesday, April 13, 20, 27: WINS-Day Challenge Sponsored by Malone’s. This is an inexpensive way for beginner handicappers to give contests a try. Enter for $10 at Wagering Central on the first floor of the Grandstand and place a mythical $2 win and place wager – no actual money required – on Keeneland races 3-8.

Friday, April 22: Spring Handicapping Challenge. Available only at the track, the Spring Handicapping Challenge offers one berth to the Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge (BCBC) in November at Keeneland and as many as four spots to the 2023 National Handicapping Challenge. (NHC). Players will wager a live bankroll of $250 on any or all of the races at Keeneland. Click here to register and for more information. Contestants may enter the day of the contest.

Saturday, April 23: Grade 1 Gamble. The signature handicapping contest of the Spring Meet is the Grade 1 Gamble, which Keeneland is hosting in cooperation with XpressBet, NYRABets, 4NJ Bets and TVG on the day of the Elkhorn (G2) and Ben Ali (G3). The entry fee is $3,500 with $2,500 going to a live bankroll and $1,000 to the prize fund. Contestants may play at Keeneland or on one of the aforementioned ADW platforms; Keeneland also will accept phone wagers from players residing in states or provinces that do not permit ADW wagering. Prizes include an estimated $75,000 for first place (based on 300 entries) and as many as six BCBC berths and 10 NHC spots. Click here to register.

Special events offer fun and philanthropy

The Spring Meet’s world-class racing is complemented by a special events calendar that offers fun for fans of all ages and interests while continuing Keeneland’s mission to support the Central Kentucky community. Among the highlights are:

Master Class culinary experiences . Master Class culinary experiences are equal parts educational, engaging and delicious. From unique dining settings to sense-awakening meals led by Chef Marc Therrien, Keeneland Hospitality can provide a one-of-a-kind culinary experience for guests at any price point.

Team-building elements for corporate retreats and conferences.  Activities are led by professional consultants designed to foster workplace connections. Topics include leading with excellence; embracing and navigating change; overcoming perfectionism; and mission, vision and values development.

“And They’re Off.”  Simulated handicapping activities – Bet-to-Win Challenge and Handicapper’s Hustle – bring the excitement of a race day to your event.

Bourbon tastings and pairings.  Because both racing and bourbon are signature Kentucky industries, guests can engage in both iconic experiences in one venue. Bourbon tasting flights are a great way to entertain and educate guests about the favorite drink of the Bluegrass while also providing an activity to spice up the evening. The Keeneland Hospitality team can help craft the perfect pairing for you or choose bourbons based on personal preference.

Keeneland Scavenger Hunt.  Keeneland is filled with stories of the people, horses and memorable events that have graced its grounds. Scavenger Hunts are customized for each group to hit the hots spots that relate to corporate missions, history and interests. This activity works well with cocktail hours and breaks, and the number of clues can be adjusted to fit time allotments.

Keeneland Tours . A National Historic Landmark, Keeneland welcomes guests to celebrate its timeless beauty. As a special part of your event, experienced guides will give behind-the-scenes tours of Keeneland grounds or Bluegrass horse farms in conjunction with Horse Country Tours.

“Call to the Post . ”  Want to add a little fanfare to your event? Whether celebrating an entrance, announcing a speaker in style or transitioning guests to dinner with flair, a resounding “Call to the Post” performance from the Bugler is the perfect addition to any occasion.

The Keeneland Shop . The Keeneland Shop features a curated selection of gifts, décor, barware, Keeneland-branded merchandise and apparel. Corporate gifting adds an elevated and professional touch to any event, and the Keeneland team will work to source custom-branded merchandise to enhance the guest experience.
