The kayak fishing space has grown by leaps and bounds over the last decade, and no topic has garnered more debate in that time than propulsion methods. Whether it’s paddle, pedal, or motor, everyone seems to have an opinion on which the best option is. And the debate about motor power versus manual power can get pretty divisive.

This dividing line has been one that many companies have struggled with over the years, with few having a solution that wasn’t some variation of “stick a motor on a kayak and call it a day”. Old Town has bridged that gap in a truly unique way with their new ePDL+ drive system. This new system essentially works like an electric bike. It utilizes a battery-powered motor that assists with your pedaling, but you can also cruise at five different speeds without pedaling at all. Putting your own leg power into the pedals extends battery life, of course.

I consider this the first advancement in the motorized kayak fishing space in years that can be deemed truly new and innovative.

Last winter, I was given the opportunity to test the new Old Town BigWater ePDL+ 132 in the backcountry around Tampa. Having several days to put the boat through the paces, I was able to really play around with its capabilities and dial in where it excelled and where it may need some work. I fished with both spinning gear and fly rods. I was on the kayak through multiple tide swings and weather conditions. Here’s what I found when using the new BigWater ePDL+ 132.

ePDL+ Drive

Old Town’s ePDL+ drive is a legitimately impressive and functional innovation that performs well. It takes a minute to get used to the dynamics of having both pedals and a motor integrated, but once you settle in, you’ll get the hang of it quickly. Using the simple interface that’s stationed between the pedals, you can alternate between five speeds.

It would be easy to overcomplicate the motorized component (see: any trolling motor or fishfinder installation video on Youtube), but Old Town has done a great job keeping the ePDL+ interface clean. You navigate the settings through a polarized-sunglass-friendly control panel and a simple two-tone UI that more closely resembles an original Nintendo Game Boy than a modern touch screen. The five speeds allow you to jump from slow trolling to throttling down to get to a new location quickly.

Hull Design

Beyond the drive itself, Old Town made a smart move by basing the BigWater ePDL+ 132 on an already proven design. The original Old Town BigWater (and older Predator series) have been around for years and are a tried-and-true platform, which relieves many of the concerns about launching a totally new boat. The hull has been tested and tweaked many times over, allowing the ePDL+ drive functionality to be integrated without worrying about the overall functionality of the boat. Additionally, the existing hull design allows for backwards compatibility with older Old Town PDL drives, which is a nice feature for anglers fishing in “no motor” tournaments or who simply want a backup drive.

Safety can be a concern with any motorized craft, and the ePDL+ has several built-in safety mechanisms to ensure your boat doesn’t drive off without you. As with most motorboats, there is a magnetic kill switch on a key fob that the user wears while kayaking. Should the angler fall off the craft, ideally the fob will be yanked free and the motor will stop. Secondly, there’s another kill switch built into the motor mount itself. If the drive is lifted from its down position, this connection is severed and the motor will automatically turn off. Additionally, if you start pedaling in reverse the drive will automatically cut the motor, which is a critical feature to avoid being launched out of the boat on a whim.

Testing the Old Town BigWater ePDL+ 132 in the Field

Simply put, there is no perfect kayak for every situation. While that will probably always remain true, some are more well-rounded than others. The ability to do many things comfortably goes a long way in the world of kayak fishing, so I believe it’s important to evaluate how a boat handles a variety of situations.

As an avid kayak angler with years of experience across a wide range of styles and fisheries, I have a set of criteria that I’m always looking for when trying out a new boat. To accurately test the BigWater ePDL+, I tried to replicate the average experience of kayak fishing on a day-to-day basis as closely as possible. This means both pedaling and paddling, standing, poling, and casting from a variety of different positions. It also means fishing with both spinning gear and fly, as well as covering a lot of water searching and getting technical with casts. Basically, it means beating both myself and the boat up to find fish at all costs.

Cruise Control Mode

The drive system on the BigWater ePDL features a “cruise control” mode, which is really where it separates itself from traditional pedal or motor crafts. Essentially, once you start pedaling, you just pick a speed setting you want and hit the cruise control button. Then, once you stop pedaling, the boat will continue moving at that rate until you start pedaling again or stop. In practice, it’s pretty darn cool. It adds a whole new dynamic to the pedal kayak experience, while maintaining the same built-in muscle memory and functionality that many kayak anglers are used to.

Versatile Speed

There are five speeds. Essentially, settings one through four are what I would deem “fishable,” while speed five, for lack of a better term, absolutely hauls ass. While the top-end speed will vary based on load, this boat can flat out move.

Weight and Bulk

While Old Town did base the BigWater 132 design on older models, they slightly tweaked some aspects, improving a few features that the original BigWater hull was lacking. The biggest improvement comes in the size of the stern tankwell, which has been significantly increased to accommodate a much wider variety of crates and coolers.

The new BigWater 132 hull design has its drawbacks, primarily bulk. The hull design is streamlined and tracks well, but it’s undeniably heavy at 143 pounds fully loaded. This hinders the maneuverability and also makes it a beast to manage solo. Additionally, while the craft is very stable, its center of gravity while seated is much higher than many other kayaks in the class, increasing its tipping ability. The inability to adjust the seat height beyond the basic settings doesn’t help this, and it somewhat limits the boat’s range of use.

Despite some of the drawbacks of the BigWater 132 hull, it’s certainly a great platform for the initial showcasing of the ePDL+ drive. It functions well for its intended use and provides excellent proof of concept for the drive itself, perhaps opening the door for a wider range of uses in different boat models in the near future. It would be exciting to see this drive implemented in a smaller craft, something lighter and nimbler that can really move.

What the Old Town BigWater ePDL+ 132 Does Best

Perhaps the biggest advantage of the ePDL+ drive is that it eliminates one of the most frustrating elements of adding a motor to a kayak: lack of intuitive control. One of the biggest drawbacks to any motorized kayak is the lack of fluidity between fishing, paddling, and controlling a motor. Typically, the motor is controlled by a small remote of some kind, usually worn by the angler or mounted on the craft. No matter how effective the motor is, this method of controlling the boat will always result in some level of distraction and can be downright annoying when you’re trying to focus on fishing.

The ePDL+ drive provides an exceptional workaround for this, allowing the user to preset the speeds and then control the motor solely by foot pedal. This cuts out the frustrating element of fumbling with a remote fob or screen and allows the angler to focus on fishing while also covering more water efficiently. Once you settle into the pedal rhythm, it doesn’t take long to forget that the kayak is motorized at all. I can see this functionality being particularly helpful in the tournament angling world, where every second spent messing with motor controls can cost you.

Unlike some other primarily pedal or motor driven craft, the BigWater ePDL+ paddles reasonably well when the drive isn’t in use. Being based on the older existing Old Town Predator series definitely helps from a design standpoint, as that series was fully intended and sold as a paddle boat originally. It’s streamlined hull shape and tracking ability allow for paddling without suffering should the drive go down. It certainly doesn’t have the same awkwardness that some more modern motor-based designs do when forced to paddle.

While a somewhat superficial benefit, one of my favorite parts of the ePDL+ drive is that it allows you to have the benefits of a motorized kayak while not looking like you have a motorized kayak. I’ll acknowledge that this is more of a personal preference, but I have always hated the appearance of motors on kayaks. The appeal of kayak fishing to me is simplicity, and the more external stuff added to the craft, the more you lose that connection to the water and the fish that makes kayak fishing special. However, the combining of the pedal and motor has advantages beyond cosmetic and ideological reasons. It eliminates bulk and cuts down on extraneous material on the craft. This simplicity helps keep the boat streamlined when not using the motor and removes potential snags and failure points that traditional motors add.

Where the Old Town BigWater ePDL+ 132 Can Improve

The ability to stand and fish is critical. As a sight fishing junkie, I think this is an area the BigWater ePDL+ could improve. Now, before I get criticized for my lack of balance or inability to stand in a kayak, hear me out. My critique is actually unrelated to its stability. Yes, the BigWater ePDL+ is incredibly stable, making it very easy to simply stand and fish. No problem there. The issue arises if you want to change positions or angles while standing. While it’s very comfortable to stand and cast from the designated deck space within the console, it’s incredibly unwieldy to do so from literally any other position on the boat.

As someone who likes to change positions and sight fish, the limited range of comfortable standing spots became somewhat frustrating. Even the seat is limiting, having only the standard adjustments to allow for back angle and leg space. Most larger fishing kayaks generally have a high and low seat setting, some even offering a range of different angles and heights to make long days on the water more comfortable. The seat on the BigWater ePDL+ is comfortable enough, but it really needs to have more adjustability to accommodate a wider variety of angling styles.

Another area of improvement would be adding some form of wearable remote control. To be clear, one of the boat’s best assets is its ability to be controlled without a remote. That said, there’s nothing wrong with giving the user both choices. It would be nice to at least have the option of a small remote removed from the actual drive, allowing the user to control the motor without the need to get into pedaling position.

The speed jumps between settings one through five are somewhat uneven. The first four settings provide a fairly clean increase, while five jumps significantly. It’s not the most pressing problem in the world, but it would be nice to see a wider range of speed settings that can be more finely tuned down the line.

Finally, it would be impossible to discuss the downsides to the BigWater 132 ePDL+ and not bring up cost. There’s no way to sugarcoat it, the $6,000 price tag is more than many people will be able to justify. It’s understandable that a totally new technology combined with an existing top-end fishing kayak will be pricey, but still there’s a threshold for what most anglers will be willing to pay for a kayak. The industry is getting packed with more and more expensive options, and it will be interesting to see when that threshold is reached.

Final Thoughts

Regardless of your attitude on motorized kayaks, I would highly recommend all kayak anglers find somewhere to at least test out the ePDL+ drive. Honestly, it’s difficult to put into words, because the drive functions so differently than other pedal systems, while at the same time feeling no different at all. It’s a three-dimensional functioning oxymoron, a seamless marriage of proven technologies and entirely new ideas. It may not be perfect, but it is a rare and legitimately progressive innovation in the kayak fishing space, and one that opens the door to a host of new possibilities.

Old Town Sportsman PDL 120

The Outstandingly Comfortable Old Town Sportsman PDL 120 Fishing Kayak

There's something about fishing out of Old Town's pedal kayaks that makes me want to stay on the water longer. Maybe it's the way the rod holders are positioned, or the fact that navigation and steering are more precise than steering with a paddle. Maybe it's the stability that makes stand-up fishing way easier than any other small craft I've fished from. I think it has something to do with the comfort of the seat and the fact that my legs were constantly in motion, preventing them from stiffening up the way they do in a standard sit-inside kayak. Whatever the reason for it, I found in my recent testing of the Old Town Sportsman PDL 120 that this model takes kayak fishing to the next level.

Specs of the Old Town Sportsman PDL 120 and Testing Conditions

Old Town Sportsman PDL 120

Old Town Kayak and Canoe builds several different variants in their sit-on-top pedal drive PDL line. I ended up going with the PDL 120 , which is the middle-of-the-pack option between the 10-foot, 6-inch Sportsman PDL 106 and the much-longer 13-foot, 2.04-inch Sportsman BigWater PDL 132. The specs for the 120 are as follows:

  • Length - 12 feet
  • Width - 36 inches
  • Assembled weight - 116 pounds
  • Pedal drive weight - 19 pounds
  • Seat weight - 6 pounds
  • Total weight capacity - 500 pounds
  • Usable weight capacity - 384 pounds

Why We Chose It

I ended up going with the PDL 120 in Ember Camo simply because I'm a shallow-water angler who sticks mostly to smaller waters. And also because the BigWater seemed a little too long for my current trailer. I live in Michigan, but I rarely venture onto the Great Lakes, so it made sense for me. However, after fishing the PDL 120, I think it could handle a calm day on Lake Michigan quite efficiently, and that will likely be something I do at some point this summer.

Favorite Feature

Without question, my favorite feature is the entire pedal console. It is well designed, easy to operate, and extremely rugged. More on that in a bit.

  • Exceptional quality of all parts and finish.
  • Extremely comfortable for hours of fishing.
  • Easy to adjust the seat and drive.
  • Easy to stand up in.
  • Rod holders are perfectly positioned.
  • Rudder and control system operate flawlessly.
  • Tons of room for extra gear and accessories.
  • Extremely durable.
  • Pedaling is a blast.
  • The weight.
  • Might require a dedicated trailer.

How We Tested It

For my testing, I stuck mostly to the series of interconnected lakes near my house. They cover a few hundred acres, so they aren't monstrous. However, they are wind-swept and are quite difficult for most paddlers to traverse with a standard kayak, so I was curious how a much longer and heavier fishing kayak would track through the open water sections. And I did get some of those winds on my very first trip out with it. With that exception, most of my testing was conducted in normal conditions any Midwestern angler could expect to experience in the late summer and early fall months, when temperatures are just starting to drop and the winds were starting to pick up with the changing of the seasons.

Construction

Before I even get into the construction of the kayak, I want to give a little extra kudos to Old Town for their shipment methods. This is clearly a company that doesn't do anything halfway. My PDL 120 arrived in my driveway wrapped as snug as a bug in a rug under multiple levels of cardboard, foam, and plastic wrap designed to keep it protected during shipping. At a time when I've seen a lot of companies cheapen out on shipping materials with their products, it's safe to say the odds of an Old Town being damaged in shipping are slim. Just make sure you have a sharp knife handy, as it wasn't easy to unwrap. Seriously, it took me nearly 15 minutes to get it open.

Once I finally cut the PDL out of its wrapping and assembled everything I was impressed by the quality of the materials and the fit and finish on this kayak. If you hop on Old Town's Instagram page, you'll see videos of workers assembling these kayaks mostly by hand right here in the USA. and it shows in the quality of the final build. This kayak is built from an incredibly rugged single-layer polyethylene material. I've seen kayaks built of this stuff before, but it just feels beefier and more durable here. It adds to the weight of the kayak, sure; but at the same time, I feel like this craft could take a beating from waves or rocks that would destroy the hull of most boats.

Old Town Sportsman PDL 120

The PDL drive is heavy but ruggedly built. Photo by Travis Smola

The same goes for the PDL drive itself. This thing weighs about 19 pounds, so it is not exactly lightweight. At the same time, nothing about it feels cheap or slapped together either. So, I was rough with it. I tossed it around a little bit during loading and unloading of the craft. I also purposely ran it aground in the shallows, just to see what happened. I was pleased to see it took the extra abuse without any issues. The only time it was hard to pedal was after I managed to wrap the prop in underwater grasses, which are easy to clear up simply by flipping the drive back up through the hole. This kayak is not a speed demon by any means, but it is easy to get going at a 5-to-6 mph clip that will get you across smaller lakes in a hurry.

The fact that Old Town covers this drive with a five-year warranty is another nice touch that just adds to the confidence of using it. The whole drive easily docks into the craft by settling the bar on the drive into a groove and turning a series of locking latches to secure it in place. At first glance, I was a little skeptical of how this system would work, but it does an excellent job locking the drive into place. My one complaint with the PDL drive is about the dry box area that's built into it. For some reason, the little latch on mine sometimes worked itself open as I pedaled. As a result, the box would sometimes just pop open on its own. However, after testing some other Old Town PDL drive kayaks, I'm convinced it's just a little quirk of the kayak I received and not something that's common across the line.

Old Town Sportsman PDL 120

The semi-circular locking mechanism for the PDL drive required a little breaking in before it latched properly. Photo by Travis Smola

I had a little bit of difficulty those first couple trips getting the latch that secures the drive to the bottom deck of the kayak to secure fully into place. However, I think it was just new and stiff. Once I worked it back and forth a few times, it finally started snapping into place as it should. Expect a little breaking in with these parts.

The seat of the PDL 120 is also extremely well designed. It feels rugged without being uncomfortable. The thing I appreciated most about this seat is the fact that you can adjust the position while still sitting in it. The seat sits on a shuttle track. Pull up on the two pins, and you can slide it back or forward to a comfortable distance from the pedals. The seat also sits high enough that you can easily slip the custom tackle box they include with each kayak under there. It's incredibly helpful to have quick access to your lures to change things up on the fly. I think any standard slim tackle box will slide under there if you don't like the one that comes with.

The positioning of the three fishing rod holders feels incredibly natural on the PDL 120. Photo by Travis Smola

I also just wanted to mention the excellent natural positioning of the accessory tracks and the rod holders of this craft. I don't think I'd even add any aftermarket holders to the kayak. It's clear a lot of thought went into the placement of these items. No more twisting yourself into a pretzel trying to reach the rods behind you. The forward-facing holder is especially nice when you land a fish, as you can just slip the rod in there and focus on unhooking whatever you just caught.

Performance on the Water

Old Town Sportsman PDL 120

Pedaling the Old Town Sportsman PDL 120 truly is a joy. Photo by Travis Smola

Simply put, the Old Town Sportsman 120 PDL is one of the best fishing platforms on the market today. From the moment I first pushed off into my local lake with this thing, I was impressed by the stability and tracking. If you are worried about buying a wobbly kayak, you won't get that with the PDL 120. This is the first kayak I've owned where I felt comfortable standing up regularly to fish, even if the water is a little choppy. It just has a hull design that's superior over anything else I've encountered out there.

On my first trip out with the PDL 120, I took it out into more open waters where the winds were whipping a bit just to see how it handled it. The open water on my lake can really push a standard kayak around like an ice cube on a kitchen counter if the winds are strong enough. I was pleasantly surprised at how the PDL 120 tracks straight into the wind or while being hit broadside by a crosswind. There's significantly less drift than I've experienced with any other kayak. I also noticed less of a "roll" feeling when hit by the wake of a larger vessel passing close by.

One of my least favorite things to do is to paddle flat-water lakes on a windy day, but the pedal drive makes this type of navigating fun. It takes so much less resistance through your legs to get a significant amount of push behind the prop on the pedal drive. The PDL 120 cuts through water into the wind like a knife through butter. I've used quite a few kayaks over the years, but never one that tracks as nicely as this one does. If the water is flat and calm, you can keep this kayak on a straight path with almost zero effort.

Speaking of the steering, Old Town has a great system in place with a simple knob system that moves the rudder back and forth. The rudder is designed with a level that allows you to raise and lower it without getting up or stretching to reach behind you. Once it is in the water, it doesn't take much movement to change directions. You can't really cut sharply in one place like you can while using a paddle, but you probably won't ever need to do that. The PDL navigates rather effortlessly even into tight quarters, and it will steer effortlessly around branches, rocks, and other obstacles in the water. The only times I unstrapped the paddle was when I was launching or docking.

The control handle makes for some easy, one-handed steering of this kayak. Photo by Travis Smola

When it comes to fishing, that's where the PDL 120 really shines. After years of trying to paddle and cast at the same time, it was truly a joy to do some hands-free fishing from a kayak for once. The PDL 120 drifts slowly; but if you want to work a series of docks or a weed line, it's a lot like having a trolling motor attached to your kayak. The biggest difference is that you're providing all the power yourself. A little exercise and I get to fish? Sign me up.

One of the bass I caught from the Sportsman 120 PDL. Not big, but still fun. Photo by Travis Smola

As I already mentioned at the start of this article, the thing that astounded me the most was simply how comfortable this kayak is. I had no problems sitting for literally hours on end, working miles of shoreline for some late-summer and early fall largemouths. And believe me, it took me a while to find a pattern they were hitting on during one of my testing days.

Old Town Sportsman PDL 120

The Sportsman PDL 120 has oodles of storage space for various items within easy reach. Photo by Travis Smola

There were some items I didn't get to test on this kayak, such as the universal transducer for mounting a fish finder. I also tend to pack light when I'm fishing, so I haven't even had the chance yet to take advantage of the dry storage in the large, sealed bow hatch in the front. However, I think that will be a good place to stow my drone and camera equipment. I checked it after every fishing trip and never saw a drop of water in it. The rear tank well held my tackle bag and other assorted fishing supplies quite handily. I still had room for a cooler or other gear had I wanted to take along.

Old Town Sportsman PDL 120

The carrying handles on the PDL 120 are probably the nicest I've seen on any kayak. Photo by Travis Smola

The only things I didn't like about the PDL 120 are a bit nit-picky in nature. This is an extremely heavy kayak due to the size and building materials. Even without the PDL drive and seat locked into place, it comes in at 91 pounds. Add those things, and you're looking at 119 pounds. I don't care how big and tough you think you are, that's a hefty boat. If you plan to fish out of one of these solo, you will need a kayak cart of some kind to get it into the water.

I'm probably going to end up buying a dedicated trailer for this kayak at some point simply because it doesn't fit very well into the cargo trailer I have now. I just want something simple where I can slip it on and off quickly at the boat dock. So, that's another potential added expense to consider for anyone who is thinking of buying one of these boats. This isn't the kind of boat you can hoist onto a car roof rack and just take off.

The Bottom Line

Old Town Sportsman PDL 120

The PDL drive is just as much fun to pedal as it looks. Photo by Travis Smola

That brings me to the price for the PDL 120, which I think is probably the biggest hurdle for most anglers to get over. This kayak retails for $2,700. However, I will say this: The price is is an understandable necessity once you've fished on it for a while. It's built in the USA; and as I've noted numerous times here, nothing about this kayak is cheap or thrown-together. This is a high-quality performance kayak that is built to fish long and hard for the user. There are times in life where you do get what you pay for, and in this case, the quality you are getting is worth the price of admission in my mind. It just might take a little saving and waiting before you can pull the trigger on one. And for what it's worth, I know a few people who have bought Old Town products and have no regrets over spending a little extra for them. Check out the Old Town website for more information on the PDL 120 and the other craft they produce.

Testing Old Town’s Sportsman 106 PDL on the river

Kayak fishing is thought of as a sit-and-cast game. The Old Town PDL 106 challenges that perception.

Sit, paddle, cast, reel. Repeat.  This is often the recipe we tend to think of when it comes to kayak fishing. The Old Town Sportsman PDL 106 is here to change that perception with the ability to stand with confidence and execute a solid fly cast.

Many kayak manufacturers today make the claim of stability, but it only takes a moment to read a few reviews that dispel those promises. I put in some serious time bird-dogging a kayak that I felt might live up to the claim — and I found it.

I put this thing to the test on lakes around Minnesota and even paddled upstream on the Mississippi to some hard-to-access stretches of river. Over several months, the PDL 106 and I fished every piece of water I could find.

In short : The Old Town Sportsman PDL 106 is a highly maneuverable fishing kayak with the stability and feel of a much larger vessel. With thoughtful features and seemingly limitless options for add-ons, this kayak can be outfitted for anything from a quick pre-work fishing excursion to an all-day adventure exploring a new body of water. Better yet, the stability and comfort make it a great choice for both sport fishing and fly fishing, depending on your preference.

The Old Town Story

Old Town Canoe is one of the oldest and largest kayak and canoe manufacturers in the United States. With a history that dates back to 1898, Old Town has been making tough canoes and kayaks from, you guessed it, Old Town, Maine.

The company continues to prioritize design and manufacturing in the U.S. Today, Old Town offers dozens of different kayaks and canoes for nearly any adventure on the water.

Who Is the Sportsman PDL 106 For?

Testing Old Town’s Sportsman 106 PDL

Made to withstand everything from offshore saltwater adventures to inland lakes and rivers, the Sportsman PDL 106 is made for everyone from newcomers to professional anglers. The stable platform and user-friendly features combine with the brand’s award-winning PDL (pedal) drive for hands-free fishing and maneuverability on the fly.

What You Should Know

Stable enough to fly fish.

I’ll be honest that I was skeptical of the claims that Old Town and other users had made about the Sportsman PDL 106’s stability. I’ve watched the YouTube videos and read the reviews — but there’s no way it actually holds up to that.

The idea of standing in a kayak feels wrong to me, let alone trying to fly fish out of one. There is too much movement and chaos to make this actually feel safe, let alone comfortable. Right ?

Wrong . At nearly 3 feet wide, this kayak is one of the widest available, and its stability has blown me away. The DoubleU Hull glides well through the water while offering rock-solid stability when standing to fish. I have fished both standing while fly fishing and while casting spinning setups — on both lakes and moving currents on the Mississippi with ease.

I have yet to feel even the slightest bit wobbly. Even standing on the rails resulted in total stability and a near-inability to flip. My own balance let me down before I could get the kayak to actually flip.

The unshakable foundation of this kayak has completely reshaped how I view kayak fishing. I didn’t actually believe you could comfortably fly fish out of a kayak standing up — and here I am eating crow.

bass_fishing_fish_lift

The PDL Drive system is a major selling point for this kayak. You can “drive” the kayak using your feet only — including both forward and reverse — with a propeller that runs right under the kayak.

The PDL Drive has a patented, easy-docking system that makes it simple to launch and land with the kayak, and you can quickly pull the system out of the water if you get into shallow water. There is a mount on the side of the kayak that securely stows a paddle for when you get in the super-shallow water and don’t want to use the PDL Drive.

I’ve found the system very easy to use, and pedaling felt exactly like riding a bike. If you are cruising on relatively flat water, you can cruise at a nice clip without too much effort. When pedaling against the current on the Mississippi, I found it a little more stout to keep a steady pace upriver but still doable.

The system is simple and efficient, making it easy to simultaneously fish while on the move through hot spots. I found myself slowly pedaling around islands on the river and different structures while throwing crankbaits with success.

What’s more? The PDL Drive is covered by the industry’s “first-in-class” 5-year warranty.

Comfort + Storage

Old Town’s Sportsman 106 PDL

I’ve found the kayak to be very comfortable, even after hours of pedaling up and down rivers in Minnesota. Old Town added an ElementAir seat that is covered in mesh to provide ventilation and drainage to keep you dry. It’s mounted to a shuttle track, so you can easily adjust the reach to the PDL Drive.

You can also adjust the lumbar support and how upright the seat sits, so when you’re cruising to your next fishing spot, you can lean back. When you get there and want to fish seated, you can quickly adjust to sit more upright.

There are thoughtful design elements like one forward-facing and two rear-facing flush-mounted rod holders, so your gear is there when you need it and out of the way when you don’t. This also allows for trolling, meaning you can fish while on the move.

Rod and tackle management is simplified with a tank well in the stern, as well as storage under the seat. There are also small pockets below the accessory racks for other essentials that you aren’t worried about getting a little wet.

Finally, there is dry storage available in the sealed bow hatch so you can keep your wallet, phone, and any other important items safe and out of the way.

When you’re in the honey hole ready to stand and fish, the floor has a nonslip EVA foam deck for traction (even when wet) and comfort if you choose to stand for long periods of time.

Oh, and don’t forget the cup holder. Everybody loves a well-placed cup holder.

Malone-Bed-Extender-Old-Town-Kayak

Transportation

Old Town boasts that the Sportsman PDL 106 is “a performance kayak that’s easy to maneuver and light enough to car top.” At 77 pounds (without the PDL Drive) and just over 10 feet long, it is possible for one person to load onto the top of a car for transport. And things get even easier if you are loading into a truck bed or onto a small trailer.

I have been putting mine in my Nissan Frontier truck bed with relative ease. I was concerned that my 5.5-foot truck bed would be a dealbreaker. But thanks to the Axis Truck Bed Extender from Malone Auto Racks , I can transport the kayak in my truck bed with confidence.

I lift the back of the kayak up onto the roller on the bed extender and push it right up into my truck bed. Two ratchet straps to hold things in place, and we are rolling. I love that I don’t have to have a trailer or find a second person to help me load it on the roof of a vehicle.

There are several handles and grab points on the kayak that make it easier to lift and load, as well as carry a short distance to put into the lake, river, etc.

Optional Features

Old Town’s Sportsman 106 PDL features

Old Town offers a plethora of add-ons for the kayak to make it work with your style of fishing and adventure. The kayak has built-in accessory racks and plates that allow for quick and easy installation of rod holders, cameras, and other tools for being on the water. In addition, there is a universal transducer mount that is recessed to protect it from damage.

Finally, there are built-in mounts on the side of the kayak for the paddle — keeping it fully out of your way but readily available when you get in the super-shallow water.

It is also worth mentioning that there is a 12-foot model in the Sportsman PDL 120 if you want a little more space, speed, and improved tracking in the water.

With a stable design and a litany of quality features come a few drawbacks. Firstly, the Sportsman PDL 106 isn’t exactly light. At 107 pounds loaded (including the PDL system), it can be a little daunting to transport yourself. I load it solo into the bed of my pickup, but it takes a little grit.

It is a bit awkward moving something that large and heavy alone. It is doable, but you should know that you won’t want to have to carry this kayak very far to a launch without some sort of cart. Additionally, with a higher weight comes a loss of speed on the water. While this isn’t something that matters to me, it is worth noting.

The kayak is expensive. At $2,200, you are making a significant investment. While I believe the kayak is worth the price, you need to decide for yourself if you will put in enough hours during a fishing season to justify the cost. With that in mind, you can count on the “buy once, cry once,” as these kayaks will last forever.

Old Town’s Sportsman PDL 106: Final Thoughts

The stability, versatility, and portability of the Sportsman PDL 106 are what make it a must-have for me. While transport can be a little cumbersome at first, I feel like I can fish nearly any body of water I can drive to without hesitation.

The ultra-stable design brings me peace of mind, whether I am throwing big lures on a spinning rig or hitting the top water bite with dry flies. The Old Town’s Sportsman PDL 106 has made me a believer in kayak fishing.

Old Town Sportsman 120 Series Review: Sportsman 120 & PDL 120

Let's take a closer look at the old town sportsman 120 and the pdl 120 in this kayak review.

Old Town Sportsman 120 Series Review: Sportsman 120 & PDL 120

The 120 is a solid platform for bass fishing and other pursuits where an elevated position (as when pedaling, here) is advantageous. Stand up, too.

If you are looking for a more traditional kayak experience, the Old Town Sportsman 120 is an affordable option that's just as stable and customizable as the PDL 120.

Ideal Application: The Sportsman PDL 120 is a platform designed first and foremost for stability, especially for stand-up and sight fishing. The “DoubleU” hull is at its best in skinny and flatter waters or in any water environment and fishing situation where stability is paramount.

old tour sportsman

Overview: If you need a platform that delivers superior steadiness while still delivering some get-up-and-go, this could be your kayak. While the dual-pontoon hull creates lots of buoyancy and stability, the Sportsman 120's PDL drive creates enough torque and power to drive the craft admirably fast in calmer waters. Like it's O.T. siblings, plenty of storage abounds in the well thought out interior. A water-tight bow hatch is roomy and includes a suspended battery storage bag. Gear tracks located just forward of the seat can accommodate electronics, rod and net holders, and molded-in storage compartments with hookless side panels capture lures, plastics and tools conveniently.

old tour sportsman

The comfortable, mesh Element Beach Seat has a built-in storage flap directly below the seat, and a rectangular sealed hatch under the seat provides great mid-hull access and additional storage. There are three molded-in rod holders, one forward-facing and two rear-facing flush mounted – there when you want them, and out-of-the-way when you don't. Two additional horizontal rod tenders are molded into the hull next to the drive, for quick access to follow-up lures. The cockpit floor has non-slip EVA foam deck pads to provide traction and stand-up comfort, and a molded-in cup holder is perfectly sized to work with most containers. A port-side paddle keeper securely locks in your backup propulsion without fear of waves knocking it free. An extra-large tank well with bungee keeper can accommodate coolers, tackle crates or livewell, and still have room for your kayak cart. A large, seat-deployable rudder rounds out the offering.

old tour sportsman

Notable: Like all models in the Old Town Sportsman lineup, the PDL 120 has a hull-protected Universal Transducer Mounting System pocket and plate for convenient installation of transducers, just forward of the PDL Drive port. This is a kayak you can feel confident on top of, stable enough for grandma or the kids, and powerful enough to tackle most any water at reasonable price of $2,199.

Old Town Sportsman 120

old tour sportsman

$ 1,449.99

When casting lines and catching fish is the goal of the day, the Old Town Sportsman 120 is ready to tag along. This fishing kayak is purposefully designed to help maximize the number of lines you have in the water to help you reel in an impressive catch.

Old Town Sportsman 120

Price History

Description, additional information, reviews (0), old town sportsman 120 prices.

Old Town Sportsman 120 Fishing Kayak (Photic Camo)

  • Can carry a lot of weight
  • Transducer scupper
  • Plenty of dry and open gear storage space
  • Non-slip EVA foam deck pads for traction
  • Very heavy for its size
  • Tricky to maneuver in windy conditions

Size and Weight

The Old Town Sportsman 120 measures up at 12’ (3.7m), which is pretty standard size for a quality solo fishing kayak. This longer length provides a bit of natural tracking ability and plentiful gear storage without detracting too much from your ability to transport it from your car to the water.

Weighing in at 82 lbs (37.2 kg), the Sportsman 120 is a pretty heavy boat. Even for a fully featured fishing kayak, this boat is on the heftier side, which means it will take some muscle to lift up onto the top of a vehicle. For reference, Perception Pescador 12.0 , which is a kayak of the exact same length, is substantially lighter at just 64 lbs (29 kg).

One of the more impressive features of the Sportsman 120 is its capacity. With the ability to carry a maximum of 500 lbs (226.8 kg), this boat is more than strong enough to accommodate larger paddlers for a day on the water.

Note, however, that Old Town includes the weight of the boat when calculating total capacity. So the usable capacity is actually 500 – 82 = 418 lbs (189.6 kg), which is still impressive.

In fact, the Sportsman 120 can carry more weight than some other similar boats, such as the Native Manta Ray Angler 12 XT , which has a load capacity of 325 lbs (147.4 kg).

This makes it an ideal choice for longer fishing trips and even overnight angling adventures. Since this kayak also has a forward dry hatch and a truly massive rear tank well, it offers more than enough space to accommodate gear for a short camping trip.

When it comes to features, this is one well-outfitted kayak.

Old Town Sportsman 120

The Sportsman 120 boasts a premium seating system that’s made from durable and UV-resistant dual-layer Textilene fabric. This seat also has a layer of 3D mesh to improve comfort and breathability.

Old Town built this kayak with a universal transducer mounting system, which allows you to quickly install your fish finder without the need to drill any holes. It also has two track systems on the bow so you can easily attach accessories to improve your fishing experience.

For anglers, the Sportsman 120 doesn’t disappoint. It has one forward-facing and two rear-facing rod holders that are flush-mounted for durability. Moreover, this boat has two cup holders for quickly storing small bits of fishing gear. It even comes with a custom tackle box that stashes under the seat to free up deck space.

To help you stay organized, the Sportsman 120 comes with a side-mounted paddle clip as well as a dedicated horizontal rod storage system. There’s also under-seat storage and a rear tank well to house all of your fishing gear.

Performance

Old Town crafted this boat with their pontoon-style DoubleU hull, which offers excellent primary stability and gliding capabilities. Thanks to its rounded hull and built-in EVA foam non-slip deck pads, the Sportsman 120 provides an exceptionally stable platform for casting lines in flat water conditions.

However, like any rounded hull kayak, it’s a bit tippy and slow, especially on choppy seas, making it best for use on calm lakes and flat rivers.

Plus, due to the Sportsman 120’s longer length, it’s also inherently decent at tracking during longer paddles. So, while this kayak has some drawbacks in performance in not-so-friendly conditions, it’s perfect for calm days on the water.

A hint of home helps Robert MacIntyre secure first PGA TOUR title at RBC Canadian Open

Change Text Size

ANCASTER, Ontario – It wasn’t quite a last resort, but the call had a tone of desperation.

After parting ways with a former caddie at the Charles Schwab Challenge, Robert MacIntyre needed a fill-in for the RBC Canadian Open. A handful of queries went unfulfilled, so MacIntyre dialed up his emergency option – his dad Dougie.

The Scotsman didn’t want to inconvenience his father, who still resides in MacIntyre’s hometown of Oban, Scotland, and works full-time as head greenkeeper at Glencruitten Golf Club – but Dougie MacIntyre knows his son’s game inside and out. He coached him until he was 14 or 15 years old and was an accomplished shinty player, only without the funds to pursue his full potential at the sport’s highest level (MacIntyre describes shinty as “a cross between field hockey and organized violence”).

Dougie MacIntyre hadn’t caddied since DP World Tour Q-School in fall 2017, but this week marked a critical juncture in his son’s first season as a PGA TOUR member – the highly touted MacIntyre, 27, arrived in Canada at No. 75 on the FedExCup standings, right on the bubble to qualify for the FedExCup Playoffs (top 70 after the Wyndham Championship in August). The call was made, and the answer was a quick yes – after confirming he could take the week off from work.

Robert MacIntyre’s emotional interview after winning the RBC Canadian

That call led to more than they could have imagined. MacIntyre earned his first PGA TOUR title at the RBC Canadian Open, carding a final-round 68 at Hamilton Golf & Country Club for a 16-under 264 total, one stroke clear of Ben Griffin. Not only does he get the proverbial monkey off his back, after a gripping one-stroke defeat to Rory McIlroy at last summer’s Genesis Scottish Open, but MacIntyre cements exempt PGA TOUR status through 2026 and qualifies for this season’s remaining Signature Events. (He’s also safely inside the top 60 in the Official World Golf Ranking, meaning he can cancel his Monday tee time at 36-hole U.S. Open Final Qualifying, in which his dad was also planning to carry the bag.)

Dougie MacIntyre is the first father to caddie his son to a PGA TOUR title since Jack Slocum (for son Heath) at the 2005 Southern Farm Bureau Classic. This isn’t a permanent arrangement by any means; MacIntyre said he has a full-time caddie scheduled to start at next week’s Memorial Tournament presented by Workday – which is a new addition to his schedule after his victory in Canada. (He might have liked to return home to Oban for some celebrations, he quipped afterward, but he figures a trip to Muirfield Village isn’t a bad idea.)

Robert MacIntyre pars the last to secure first win at RBC Canadian

MacIntyre is a chip off the old block, known on TOUR for his kindness and humility – which he certainly inherited from his father. MacIntyre’s parents (Dougie and mom Carol) are longtime foster parents; MacIntyre grew up with several foster brothers and sisters. The family wasn’t particularly well off; MacIntyre didn’t have the pick of the litter when it came to junior golf tournaments, but he was always loved, supported and encouraged. He grew to understand the rough upbringings of his foster brothers and sisters – some had been abused or neglected – and he learned not to take anything for granted. After his son’s victory Sunday in southern Ontario, Dougie MacIntyre gave away golf balls and towels to young fans, conversing and sharing in their revelry. He was in full dad effect.

“I think it makes you realize that hitting a white ball around a golf course isn't the most important thing,” MacIntyre described the impact of his parents’ fostering. “I mean, I've been in tears over it, kids going away from you. They become family. They have been in a tough spot. I wasn't given everything as a kid. I was given a great opportunity. My dad was obviously a really good sportsman, football, golf, shinty, didn't have the finances to really chase it, and I think it was something that my mom and dad always wanted to do. I've got two older sisters who are right into their horses, horse riding and stuff, but they even sacrificed quite a lot of that just to give me a chance.

“I couldn't play in golf tournaments as a junior because we couldn't afford it. I think that made me, that makes me fight and never give up, I think not being given anything. I mean, they gave me quite a bit. They gave me the opportunity, but never – never was I spoon-fed. I was always fighting for every bit of it.”

Dougie MacIntyre’s soft side complements a competitive edge that was also on display at Hamilton Golf & Country Club, coming to the forefront at critical moments on the weekend. The younger MacIntyre was on the verge of falling into a mental rut as he strode down the 10th fairway Saturday, having turned in 1-over 36 and sensing his grip on the tournament slipping away (he entered the third round in a share of the lead; he was four back at the turn Saturday). His dad sensed the spiral and wanted to nip it in the bud – MacIntyre has emphasized an improved mental game in recent weeks, taking negative thoughts and flipping them into a positive tone.

“He was having a wee go at me when I was walking from the 10th tee down to the fairway,” MacIntyre said. “Look, he was a sporting guy, he knows how to win, knows how to lose, he's been through it all. He could see my head going a little bit and he's like, ‘What have you been working on for the last eight weeks, 10 weeks?’ … I kind of flipped into that mode and tried to find the positive in everything.”

Robert MacIntyre's news conference after winning RBC Canadian

MacIntyre listened on the very next hole. After his tee shot caught a divot in the 11th fairway, he could have been “mumping and moaning about it,” but he told himself the lie lent itself to a cutty 6-iron. He played a 183-yard approach to the center of the green and two-putted from 20 feet. Then he played his next seven holes in 4-under, signing for a 4-under 66 and suddenly assuming a four-stroke lead into Sunday, where he withstood Griffin’s late charge (birdies on Nos. 15, 16 and 17) for a one-stroke win that he and his dad will remember forever.

The energy of their shared hug on the 18th green Sunday, amidst the cacophony of adoring Canadian fans, was surely felt back home in Oban. It’s where MacIntyre learned the game and what it meant to be a man. Both things coalesced this weekend, under the watchful eye of the man who has been there all the way.

“Unbelievable,” said Dougie MacIntyre on the 18th green in the aftermath, basking in the moment with tears in his eyes. He could barely speak, but the emotion said it all.

“Unbelievable.”

15-year-old golf phenom to make PGA Tour debut in Detroit

One of golf’s potential future stars will be making his PGA Tour debut this month in Detroit.

Miles Russell, 15, will compete in the Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club under a sponsor’s exemption, the tournament announced on Monday.

The 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic will be held June 27-30.

“The Rocket Mortgage Classic is known as a tournament where ‘future stars start,’ and we’re thrilled to have Miles make his PGA Tour debut here and add to that legacy,” RMC director Jason Langwell said in a statement. “He has proved with his many accomplishments at such a young age that he belongs, and we are excited to see Miles compete alongside the world’s best golfers here at Detroit Golf Club.”

Russell, a high school freshman from Jacksonville Beach, Florida, cemented his status as one of golf’s best young players when he made the cut at a Korn Ferry Tour event, the LECOM Suncoast Classic, in April.

That performance came after he won the Junior PGA Championship by seven shots last August and won AJGA Player of the Year honors. In doing so, he topped Tiger Woods to become the youngest player to win that honor.

Russell was given one of four sponsors exemptions into the tournament, which was won by Rickie Fowler last year.

Taylor swift shuts down show to help fan ... 'i can do this all night'.

Taylor Swift 's serious about her fans' health ... straight-up refusing to sing until security could get to someone who apparently needed help -- and narrating the whole situation.

New video -- now circulating on X -- shows the singer-songwriter onstage in Edinburgh, Scotland Friday ... strumming the notes to her song "Would've, Could've, Should've" before she sees a few of her fans in her crowd she feels need assistance.

Over the microphone, Taylor says there's someone right in front of her who needs help ... and adds she's not going to sing until event staff rushes to aid the fans.

Tay even uses her guitar to point to the group in need ... singing a jaunty, little tune about how she's just going to keep playing her guitar until someone physically gets to the group.

Basically, it takes a while before Swift's able to keep the concert going -- but, her fans seem to love it ... cheering on their queen for keeping an eye out for supporters in trouble.

This is a pretty common theme for the "Eras" tour ... Swift's called attention to fans in trouble in the past -- including in France last weekend where she actually pointed them out to staff in some pretty impressive French.

No need to flex her knowledge of other languages this time ... but, another example of Taylor proving she really cares about her Swifties.

Taylor's got one more show in Edinburgh kicking off this evening before heading a few hours south to Liverpool where she'll play three concerts on Father's Day weekend.

Hopefully, no issues at that performance ... but, we know Swift will be all over it if there are.

Professional golfer Grayson Murray, 30, dies by suicide after withdrawing from Charles Schwab Challenge

Murray was a two-time winner on the pga tour.

grayson-murray-cwc-g.png

Professional golfer Grayson Murray has died. He was 30 years old. Murray's death comes after he withdrew Friday during the second round of the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge, citing an illness.

A day after Murray's death rocked the larger sporting world, his parents announced in a statement through the PGA Tour that he died by suicide.

"We would like to thank the PGA Tour and the entire world of golf for the outpouring of support," Eric and Terry Murray said. "Life wasn't always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now."

An undeniable talent, Murray was the second-youngest golfer in history to make the cut on the Korn Ferry Tour before turning eventually pro in 2015. He bounced up and down between the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour over the course of his career, becoming a polarizing figure at times because of frequent outbursts on the course.

Still, his potential consistently flashed as he won twice on the PGA Tour -- capturing the 2017 Barbasol Championship and 2024 Sony Open in Hawaii -- and three times on the Korn Ferry Tour.

When he won the Sony Open, it seemed as if Murray had turned a corner after battling anxiety, depression and alcohol abuse throughout his young career. He said in January that he had been sober since early 2023. He also shared that he was unprepared for life as a pro when he first got out of college and began traveling.

"Yes, I would drink during tournament weeks," Murray said after his Sony Open win. "It was my outlet. I thought I was invincible coming out here as a 22-year-old, winning as a rookie, played three days hungover when I won. Best thing and worst thing that ever happened to me was winning my rookie year -- but also feeling like I was invincible."

Murray cited his faith and his fiancee as helping ground him, and he spoke about his road to recovery.

"It took me a long time to get to this point," he said. "… I'm a different man now. I would not be in this position right now today if I didn't put that drink down eight months ago."

Murray added: "People who don't know me, I'll have to show it through my actions, and they'll get back on Grayson's side. My demeanor is so much better. It's really a lot of fun now. I really don't live and die by a golf shot anymore. I'm not going to sit here and say it's going to be all glory and roses, but it's going to be a lot better."

The PGA Tour considered postponing play at the Charles Schwab Challenge as the golf world was rocked by Murray's death . However, his parents insisted the tournament continue as scheduled as it was what their son would have wanted.

"We were devastated to learn -- and are heartbroken to share -- that PGA Tour player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words," said PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan in a Saturday statement. "The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.

"I reached out to Grayson's parents to offer our deepest condolences, and during that conversation, they asked that we continue with tournament play. They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so. As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes."

A native of Raleigh, North Carolina, Murray attended Wake Forest, East Carolina and Arizona State where he played golf before turning pro. In 141 career PGA Tour starts, Murray had 10 top-10 finishes, including those two victories.

The PGA Tour has sent grief counselors to both tournament sites this week and made others available virtually for its members.
