Breathtaking scenery

All aboard - the magaliesburg express.

T T he rhythmic ticking of wheels along a track, great billowing clouds of steam, the train whistle howling. If you have ever wanted to experience an adventure by a steam locomotive, then this day trip from Joburg to Magaliesburg and back again will charm you with the romance of days gone by.

There’s a reason train outings are so loved. From the moment you stand on the platform to the end of the day when you head back to the station through the setting sun, you’re in for an unforgettable rail adventure.

The Magaliesburg Express is one of five historic steam locomotives operated by Reef Steamers, a voluntary group of rail enthusiasts.

T T he journey starts as soon as you get there. After a briefing, step aboard and watch the age-old process of preparation, from the coal trimming to firing, ash-pan cleaning, and lubrication.

E E n route, take note of the wheel tapper at work. You can also open the windows, or stand in the passage and lean out to feel the smoke billowing from the chimney and watch the clouds of steam pumping from the train’s pistons.

Prefer a more leisurely experience? Head to the bar coach, sit back and watch the countryside from a comfy sofa with a drink in hand. Half way there, you’ll stop at the original Krugersdorp Station, built in 1896. The next stop is Magaliesburg.

This is a wonderful way to experience the town. Over the next four hours you can explore the craft shops, take a swim, and enjoy a picnic or lunch at one of the country restaurants.

On the way back, let the rhythmic sounds of the train engine lull you to sleep, or sit back and watch the countryside steam by.

Magaliesburg Steam Train

If you're looking for something different to do in and around Gauteng, why not take a steam train trip to the beautiful Magaliesberg for a day of country living? Rather than driving, the Magaliesberg steam train offers a trip from Johannesburg Station where passengers can enjoy the nostalgic beauty of a bygone era as the locomotive powers up the Magaliesberg.

The journey takes about 90 minutes and makes for a great day out for the whole family. Board the train in the cool of the morning, and then relax as you listen to the chugging of the engine, and watch the countryside passing you by as you wind your way through the Magaliesberg Mountains leaving a trial of smoke behind you.

Once you're reach the Magaliesberg, passengers can disembark the train and head into town for lunch at one of the local hotels or guesthouses. Take a walk around the many interesting art and craft stores surrounded by the beauty of the mountains. The Magalies Meander is an arts route that has been set up to showcase the best of the area's creativity, and you can pick up a brochure on arrival detailing the many interesting things to do.

Alternatively, spend a day taking in the rich nature of the Magaliesberg by going on a horse trail through the veld, biking through the mountains, or hiking up one of the rugged koppies.

Young and old alike are sure to enjoy the experience and after a day of exploring, you can relax once again as the train chugs its way back to Johannesburg.

Monthly steam train rides in designated areas in Gauteng with the Reefsteamers trains on regular Saturday intervals.

Reefsteamers is a non-profit company affiliated with the Transnet Heritage Foundation. When Transnet discontinued daily steam operations in 1991, Reefsteamers was established at the old loco shed in Germiston. The main objective is to preserve and rebuild old steam locomotives. There are also special day and weekend trips for private persons and companies to various destinations to fund activities.

The organization comprises people from all walks of life such as business executives, engineers, accountants and pensioners, most of whom spent many years in the employ of the Railways. All work is done voluntarily and no one is paid any remuneration whatsoever. The foundation currently has 100 members both, local and overseas. Twenty-five people are actively involved in restoration during weekends.

There are many opportunities for members to become involved in activities such as organizing and controlling the steam train trips, polishing, fitting, cleaning, advertising or even assisting with general tasks such as administration. There has been a growing demand for steam since this method of traction was phased out years ago. Often these trains are featured in advertisements on television, in movies or recently in South African musicians' videos.
