Santhome Church is a standing testament to the belief of the Christian followers and is among the three wonders of this world that house the tombs of Christ’s original disciple. The other two are Santiago de Compostela in Spain and St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. It was constructed in the memory of Saint Thomas who was an Apostle of Jesus Christ. Santhome Church is the greatest symbol of multi-culture and religious harmony as people from all religions visit this Church to seek solace and eternal peace. This church was built initially as a mausoleum, but it has now transversed into a Basilica owing to it’s gaining popularity and importance. Beneath the towering white embodiment of this basilica lies the body of Saint Thomas who came to India in 52 AD to preach about Christianity. He was successful in converting a large population of the locals residing in Tamil Nadu and Kerala with his wisdom and powerful preaching. He thereafter formed a community that is now known as Syrian Christians. This church also houses a museum that displays souvenirs of Saint Thomas and gives visitors an insight into the glorious past of this church during the historical times.

Iskcon Temple

Located on the East Coast Road in the Sholinganallur locality of South-Chennai, ISKCON Temple is the spiritual and cultural hub of the city. This temple in Chennai is not only the biggest Radha Krishna temple in Tamilnadu but one of the biggest ISKCON temples in India. With the history of the ISKCON temple in Chennai dating back to the late 1970s, the construction of the temple began in the late 1990s and was completed in 2012 in many phases. The temple houses the deity of Lord Krishna, alongside Radharani and their friends Lalita, Lord Chaitanya, Lord Jagannath, Baladeva, and Subhadra inside three teak-wood alters which are one of a kind. These deities are sourced from Rajasthan and Orissa. Under the guidance of Sri Bhanu Swami, the beautiful architecture is inspired by the Kalinga and Pallava kingdoms’ architecture. At the entrance of the temple, one would see the wonderful design of various Hindu universes on the marble flooring. The various universes are circled a central pillar called Mount Meru. The design is implicated from the ancient Vedic Puranas where Mount Meru is described as the centre of all the universes. The temple is a blend of various cultures with modern scientific technology. To attract more and more people in the ISKCON movement, the authorities of the temples organize lectures and audio-visual programs about the Hindu philosophy. Spread over an area of 1.5 acres, the ISKCON temple or the Hare Rama Hare Krishna temple is built on five floors.

Visit Egmore

Egmore is a bustling commercial neighborhood at the edge of Central Chennai. Explore Indian art and anthropology, browse art exhibitions and shop at colorful street markets. Visit religious monuments that range from colonial-era churches to Dravidian-style Hindu temples. Egmore dates back to the 11th century when it was the headquarters of Tamil Nadu during the reign of the Chola kings.

It features galleries dedicated to the anthropology, architecture, art and botany of South India. Children can have fun playing with science exhibits and spotting a life-size animatronic Tyrannosaurus rex. Catch performances at the 600-capacity museum theater.

Another noteworthy area of the museum complex is the National Art Gallery. Appreciate the displays of British portraits rock art and Tamil Nadu handicrafts. There are also works by Ravi Varma, who is one of India’s most celebrated painters. Stop by the Connemara Public Library to peruse old books in a decorative reading room.

Hindu devotees move between the neighborhood’s attractive shrines, including 500-year-old Ranganathar Temple. The intricate sculptures of the Meenakshi Temple are superb examples of Dravidian art. Admire the whitewashed neoclassical façade of St. Andrew’s Church, built by the Scottish community in 1821. Study the church’s Corinthian columns, stucco work, stained-glass windows and blue-painted dome.

Cotton Street, a section of Pantheon Road, is the place to go to shop for colorful fabrics and saris. Purchase accessories, footwear, jewelry items and trinkets at Alsa Mall and Fountain Plaza. Food stands serve typical Indian snacks such as omelet sandwiches and jalebi, which is a deep-fried batter coated in syrup.

Chennai's iconic restaurant in Egmore gets a makeover

E ver since Mathsya (then Udupi Home) burst onto the Chennai food scene in the 1940s in Egmore, it swiftly sealed a place for itself among foodies who were looking for some authentic and sumptuous vegetarian fare. And now, the iconic landmark of Chennai, which spans seven decades, has gotten a pristine makeover.

As we stepped into the revamped restaurant, we couldn’t help but notice the journey of the restaurant from the pre-independence era, adeptly captured in a series of photographs adorning its walls. Pictures speak a thousand words and these pictures are testimony to the brand''s long and impressive journey.

The restaurant might have a brand new avatar, but when it comes to taste, it continues to dole out oodles of nostalgia along with the authentic taste of coastal Karnataka.

Our lunch began with the iconic Rasa vadai , which was a perfect appetiser for the elaborate meal that followed. Soon, the squishy and delectable starters — Mangalore bondas , guliappas , and Mangalore buns — arrived in style, along with chutney and sambar. Among the trio, the Mangalore buns, a deep-fried puffed bread, stood out with its distinct taste of bananas and a hint of cumin.

For the main course, we had the popular Udupi thali , a platter comprising myriad flavors in the form of Bisi bele bath , vadam , chitranna , palya (dry poriyal ), kadubu , gassi , kara uppu puli dosai , herbs and greens dosai , fruit pachadi , and curd rice. Needless to say, it seemed like an explosion of flavours in the mouth. The highlight of the meal was the soft as a feather Neer dosa with Kai bella, a match made in heaven.

After the Udupi sojourn, we dug into some Continental and North Indian fare. The restaurant’s popular Chilli cheese toast, which was buttery-cheesy on top and plain on the other side, arrived first. This one is best enjoyed fresh and hot off the stove. We also tried the bread with Spicy corn, which gave it a continental flavour, and Peas masala, which provided an Indian touch. The bread was fresh as a daisy, and soft and fluffy. We were told that the bread was baked in-house.

The Tandoori platter arrived soon after, and this one comprised Masala kulcha , Methi paratha , Paneer mint kash , Aloo 55 , Golconda biriyani , and raita . While the Masala kulcha passes muster, we quite loved the rest of the lot.We highly recommend the Aloo 55 , which was crunchy and delicious, and makes for a perfect evening snack. We washed down the elaborate fare with some fruit falooda and piping hot filter coffee.

Meal for two starts at `600.
