WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Alaska Cruises Insider

The sheer size of Alaska lends itself to a wide variety of terrain and travel experiences. This diversity means you need to be prepared for a lot of change while traveling.

The best time to travel to Alaska depends on your priorities. If you're interested in the Midnight Sun, the longest day of the year is June 21, when you can experience close to 20 or more hours of sunlight in some parts of the state. If you're more interested in the Alaska Northern Lights, the earlier sunset in later summer will allow more contrast and better views of this natural wonder.

No two days will be the same, and you'll need to pack your clothing to prepare for temperature changes throughout the day. Think layers: zip-up sweaters, boots, rain jackets.

Alaska is not a formal place; people even wear jeans to the opera. Focus more on comfort when deciding what clothing to pack.

Cameras, binoculars, rain ponchos and jackets are useful, but add these to the souvenirs you'll be picking up and soon your bag will be too heavy to tote around. Bring along a quality day pack to make it easier to hold your necessities.

Learn a few words in Alaska's local lingo: The "Alcan" is the Alaska-Canada Highway, for example, and "fish stories" are the local version of tall tales — unreliable yarns of mythological proportions, often told by fisherman.

ALASKAN CUISINE WILD IS THE WAY

Alaskan food focuses on locally sourced ingredients that reflect the state's rugged terrain and the vast oceans surrounding it. These nutrient-rich waters serve up some gorgeous fish and shellfish, from super-fresh salmon to huge Alaskan King Crabs that can feed a crowd, while game meats and berries from the wilderness form a perfect marriage of flavor.

Sourdough is such an important part of Alaskan culture that long-time Alaskans are actually called sourdoughs in local parlance. Try a sourdough bread bowl filled with salmon chowder for a hearty lunch.

Alaskan Wild Berries Pie Dessert

GO WILD FOR BERRIES

Alaskan wild berries are sweet and pack a powerful punch of flavor. Whether served up in jams, candies, pies or cobblers, Alaskan blueberries, high-bush cranberries and other local wild berries are a staple when it comes to Alaskan summer eats.

The Most Affordable Alaska Cruises

The Holland America Noordam in Skagway.

There's no better time than now to book your dream vacation to The Great Land. Cruise vacations are more popular than ever, and affordable cruises are getting harder to find – especially for beloved destinations like Alaska.

Cruisers can nab some of the lines' best deals of the year during wave season. This period, which extends from January to March, refers to the "tidal wave" of lower pricing across the cruising industry during this time. Some cruise lines even kick off their sales in December, so it's advisable to begin your search for discounted pricing early.

Below, we've included some of the best Alaska cruise deals available right now for sailings in 2024 and 2025. All quoted prices are per person for double occupancy and were accurate at the time of writing. Keep in mind: Each itinerary may be available on multiple dates; we've listed the date with the lowest starting price to get you the best value.

Read on to explore the top options for an affordable Alaska cruise.

The wave season pricing also features a complimentary stateroom upgrade, reduced deposits, and free or discounted fares for kids.

Holland America's seven-day voyage aboard Noordam includes an afternoon cruising in Hubbard Glacier and a full day of sailing through picturesque Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve. The ship also calls on the ports of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, with one additional day of scenic cruising on the Inside Passage, before disembarking in Vancouver. Plan to stay an extra day in Vancouver to explore on your own, or opt for a hop-on, hop-off sightseeing tour with Holland America (complete with luggage service and an airport transfer) before taking a flight home later that evening.

This southbound itinerary is also available on May 25, 2025, aboard Nieuw Amsterdam , starting at $679 per person.

7-Day Alaska Inside Passage

This round-trip sailing on Zaandam from Vancouver highlights the Inside Passage with a day of scenic cruising, plus a limited stop in Tracy Arm Inlet for excursions, before reaching the coastal towns of Juneau and Skagway. Then, you'll enjoy another day of scenic cruising in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve, followed by a stop in Ketchikan and cruising the Inside Passage before disembarking in Vancouver .

The Tracy Arm fjord features glacier-covered mountains and the largest intact coastal temperate rainforest in the country. It is also home to abundant wildlife, including whales, harbor seals, bald eagles, bears and mountain goats. Book the Tracy Arm Fjord & Glacier Explorer excursion to see the majestic beauty of the Tracy Arm wilderness and the twin Sawyer Glaciers up close. You might even see and hear ice calving into the pristine waters. You'll cruise through Stephens Passage on your way back to meet the ship in Juneau.

Zaandam sails this itinerary in 2025, as well. The lowest fare starts at $629 per person for the voyage on May 14, 2025.

Princess Cruises

The Majestic Princess in Skagway.

Princess Cruises' wave season deals feature up to 40% off cruise prices, complimentary room upgrades, $100 deposits, and free fares for third and fourth guests in the same stateroom or suite. The advertised fares on the Princess Cruises website are for the line's MedallionClass experience, which includes dining at the complimentary onboard restaurants, entertainment on the ship, fitness facilities, and the youth and teen clubs. You can add optional upgrades, such as a beverage package, specialty dining, shore excursions and Wi-Fi access, either individually or with a Princess Plus or Princess Premier package.

7-Day Voyage of the Glaciers with Glacier Bay (Northbound)

Princess' seven-day itinerary aboard Grand Princess features the lowest available fare for the line's 2024 Alaska season. The itinerary starts with a relaxing sea day, followed by stops in three ports of call in Alaska: Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway. You'll also have two days of scenic cruising in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and College Fjord before disembarking in Whittier, near Anchorage .

The southbound voyage (which is the reverse itinerary) on Grand Princess departs May 15, 2024, from Anchorage and also starts at $398 per person. Or, you can sail that southbound itinerary on Sapphire Princess on May 18, 2024, for the same price.

In 2025, you can book this itinerary on Caribbean Princess for as low as $467 per person, embarking on May 10, 2025.

7-Day Inside Passage (Roundtrip Vancouver)

This shoulder season sailing in September is available on Grand Princess. The round-trip voyage from Vancouver features two days at sea; one day of scenic cruising in Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier; and stops in the coastal towns of Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan. While on the ship, spend warmer days outdoors relaxing at The Sanctuary, an adults-only venue. You can also experience one of the line's Discovery at SEA enrichment programs on board, or book one of the affiliated excursions ashore.

This Grand Princess itinerary is also available on May 27, 2025, for as low as $547 per person.

Norwegian Cruise Line

The Norwegian Jewel in Alaska.

Norwegian's current "Free At Sea" promotion includes a free unlimited open bar package, free specialty dining, free shore excursions and complimentary Wi-Fi access. You'll also find additional deals like 50% off deposits, free third and fourth guests (or $99 per additional person, depending on the sailing), and free airfare for a second guest. Be sure to check the terms and conditions before booking a Norwegian sailing.

7-Day Alaska: Hubbard Glacier & Skagway

Afterward, the ship calls on Icy Strait Point, Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan (Ward Cove).

In Ketchikan, reserve a spot for the Alaskan Cultural & Lumberjack Show Experience, which includes an entertaining show, a chance to learn about Alaska Native culture, and a tasting of local food and wines. Alaska also offers some of the best fishing conditions in North America, so anglers may want to consider booking a private excursion to go fishing for halibut or salmon. After several days in port, enjoy one more day of scenic cruising through the Inside Passage before disembarking in Vancouver.

In 2025, the seven-day Hubbard Glacier & Skagway itinerary will sail from Vancouver to Whittier. The lowest fare for this cruise starts at $529 per person aboard the Norwegian Jade on May 5, 2025.

7-Day Alaska: Glacier Bay, Skagway & Juneau

This sailing on Norwegian Jewel departs from Vancouver and includes three sea days cruising the Inside Passage, Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and Hubbard Glacier. The itinerary also calls on the ports of Ketchikan (Ward Cove), Juneau and Skagway.

The 13-mile-long Mendenhall Glacier is one of the top attractions in Juneau, and the line offers a variety of excursions to view the impressive ice sheet. For a bucket list adventure, splurge on the helicopter and dog-sledding excursion to Mendenhall Glacier from Skagway. You can also opt for another once-in-a-lifetime trip: a flightseeing tour by floatplane. You'll fly into the wilderness, kayak across a stream and then hike the surface of the Norris Glacier, a remote glacier in the Coast Mountains that's only accessible by plane or on foot.

If you're looking forward to 2025, you can book a similar itinerary from Whittier to Vancouver on April 28, 2025, starting at $499 per person on Norwegian Jade.

Celebrity's 2024 wave season includes flash sales with offers like 75% off the second guest on nonrefundable deposit rates and a 50% discount with refundable deposit fares. Other deals may include free upgrades, depending on the sailing. Refer to the Celebrity Cruises website for the current promotions, or consult with a cruise specialist for the best deals and pricing.

7-Night Alaska Southbound Glacier

This mid-May itinerary on Celebrity Summit is currently the line's lowest-priced Alaska cruise for the 2024 season. The one-way sailing from Seward includes a day of scenic cruising around Hubbard Glacier: one of Alaska's most beautiful natural treasures at 7 miles wide, 76 miles long and an impressive 30 stories high. The ship also calls on ports in Juneau, Skagway, Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan, with an additional full day cruising the Inside Passage, before disembarking in Vancouver.

For 2025, this same itinerary currently starts at $649 per person for the May 16 sailing on Celebrity Summit.

7-Night Alaska Northbound Glacier

The reverse itinerary of the southbound voyage above, this cruise offers similar ports of call and sea days, except you'll stop in Sitka rather than Skagway. This sailing is also on Celebrity Summit. During your time in Icy Strait Point, consider a whale watching excursion; you are guaranteed to see whales (or receive your money back) on one of the tours departing from their shores. In Sitka, take a guided hike to explore the beautiful Tongass National Forest or a tour to learn about the Tlingit culture. This outing includes a visit to local totem artists and a beer meister, as well as a sampling of regional foods at a popular restaurant.

Or, consider a comparable cruise aboard Celebrity Summit on May 9 or May 23, 2025. Fares start at $649 per person.

Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean's current deal features up to $600 in onboard credit, 60% off the second guest and kids sail free fares . The line offers sales throughout the year, so you can check back to see what promotions are available at a later date, or contact a cruise specialist for additional specials. Below, you'll find the lowest fares currently available for Royal Caribbean sailings in Alaska.

7-Night Northbound Alaska & Hubbard Glacier

Royal Caribbean's one-way sailing aboard Radiance of the Seas features scenic cruising along the Inside Passage and Hubbard Glacier, as well as stops in the ports of Juneau, Icy Strait Point, Sitka and Skagway. Consider booking a ride on the White Pass and Yukon Route while in Skagway: The historic narrow-gauge railway offers a picturesque ride through Alaska's wilderness, with views of White Pass.

The reverse itinerary, the Southbound Alaska & Hubbard Glacier voyage, is also available on Radiance of the Seas; prices start at $339 per person for the May 10, 2024, sailing. In 2025, the May 30 northbound itinerary aboard Radiance of the Seas currently begins at $680 per person.

7-Night Alaska Experience Cruise

This round-trip voyage from Seattle on Quantum of the Seas calls on Sitka, Skagway and Juneau in Alaska. It also makes a late afternoon stop in Victoria, British Columbia , where you can plan to have dinner that evening. You'll have two days at sea for relaxing or enjoying all the activities and attractions on the ship, including the RipCord by iFLY skydiving simulator, robotic bartenders and live performances with aerial entertainers. You can also take a ride on the FlowRider surf simulator, surrounded by snowcapped mountain views and calving glaciers.

In 2025, this round-trip voyage from Seattle on Quantum of the Seas starts at $840 per person for the Sept. 8 voyage.

Carnival Cruise Line

This cruise line advertises limited-time promotional rates and deals throughout the year. You can join Carnival 's VIFP (Very Important Fun Person) Club to unlock even more deals and additional perks. Current specials include reduced deposits, up to 35% off fares, free room upgrades, onboard credit and discounts for families traveling in the same stateroom.

7-Day Alaska from Seattle

This seven-day voyage on Carnival Spirit sails round-trip from Seattle and features one day to explore the ship while at sea, plus a scenic cruising day in Tracy Arm Fjord. Ports of call include Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, as well as a late evening stop in Victoria before you disembark the next day in Seattle. For your day in Ketchikan, consider booking the award-winning Bering Sea Crab Fishermen's Tour on the famed Aleutian Ballad from the Discovery Channel show, "Deadliest Catch."

This itinerary is also offered on Carnival Luminosa . If you are sailing in 2025, you can book the same seven-day cruise starting at $609 per person for the April 14 voyage on Carnival Spirit.

Shorter cruises

A shorter cruise may be an attractive option if you don't have extensive vacation time or you prefer to spend a few days ashore before or after your sailing. If kids are in tow for the adventure – and it's your first time cruising with them – you might also want fewer days at sea to test the waters (literally). See our pick of competitively priced four- and five-night Alaska cruises, below.

Princess Cruises: 4-Day Alaska Sampler

This 2025 cruise aboard Discovery Princess includes one port of call, Ketchikan, and two days at sea between Vancouver and Seattle. This 4-Day Alaska Sampler itinerary is also offered on May 13, 2025, on Royal Princess , with a starting price of $327 per person. The reverse itinerary (Seattle to Vancouver) is offered on May 23, 2025, on Grand Princess; pricing starts at $347 per person.

Princess Cruises: 5-Day Alaska Sampler

If you want to sail with Princess for one extra day, consider booking the five-day sampler cruise sailing round-trip from Vancouver. This early season itinerary aboard Caribbean Princess calls on Sitka and Ketchikan, offering more time ashore to explore these two popular coastal towns along Alaska's Inside Passage. Guests will also have two sea days to enjoy activities and dining experiences on the ship.

How to find the best Alaska cruise deals

Book during wave season.

As previously mentioned, you can take advantage of some of the best deals of the year during wave season. Promotions offered during wave season include lower cruise fares, reduced deposits and onboard credits. You can also find special rates (or free fares) for the third and fourth guests in the same room, making this the perfect time to book a family cruise .

In addition, look for discounts on higher-level staterooms and suites, or even accommodations in exclusive areas of the ship, such as The Haven on Norwegian Cruise Line or The Retreat on Celebrity Cruises. These private spaces offer swanky extras like luxurious accommodations, all-inclusive pricing , butler service, a team of attendants and concierge service, as well as private restaurants, lounges and pools. With lower pricing, wave season may be the best time to splurge on a cruise vacation in one of these upscale enclaves.

Promotional pricing beyond wave season

If you miss booking your cruise during wave season, don't panic. Many lines offer special pricing and flash sales throughout the year and advertise lower fares for voyages during Alaska's shoulder seasons, which fall in May and September.

"You will always find the more affordable Alaska cruises toward the beginning and end of the season. This year, the Alaska cruise season begins in April and continues through October," says Chris Gray Faust, executive editor of Cruise Critic. She adds, "The challenge with shoulder season Alaska cruises is that the weather might not be the best – it can snow in Alaska in April and early May – and in the fall, the nights will be longer (although, there is a chance you might see northern lights )."

In addition to giving up the warmer summer weather (and possibly having snow), you may also miss some optimal wildlife viewing opportunities if you cruise early or late in the season. For example, the peak time for bear-watching excursions extends from mid-June to mid-August, which falls during the height of the Alaska cruise season in July and August.

If you're looking for other ways to save money on your cruise, Gray Faust advises that older ships also provide more value when you're looking for deals.

It's important to note that a few of this year's wave deals extend just until the end of February 2024, so you'll need to refer to the individual cruise line websites to see the exact dates for the special offers. You may also be able to find lower prices on some discount and aggregator sites, like Cruise Critic, Cruises.com and Priceline.

When is the 2024 Alaska cruise season?

The Alaska cruise season typically runs between April and October, although most cruise lines tend to offer cruises between May and September.

The choice of which month to sail to Alaska depends on a few variables:

How long is an Alaska cruise?

Nearly all 2024 Alaska cruises are 7-nights long that visit the Inside Passage or Alaska Glacier cruises.

There are shorter and longer 2024 Alaska cruises, with some as long as 22-nights.  But odds are your Alaska cruise will be a week long in duration.

What is the best 2024 Alaska cruise itinerary?

A majority of the Alaska cruises sail the Inside Passage, which is a waterway along the southeast coast of Alaska and British Columbia that visit the glaciers and the most popular cities along the way.

Some of the longer cruises will go further north in Alaska, sailing through the Gulf of Alaska. These typically begin or end in Anchorage.

Inside Passage cruises usually begin in Seattle or Vancouver. Expect to see lots of natural sights and wildlife, even while simply sailing between ports. Cruise ships sail along the coast, which means you could see eagles, whales, dolphins, or bears from the ship along the coast.

Another great benefit to sailing the Inside Passage is less risk of getting seasick. Since your ship is sailing between large land masses, ocean conditions usually remain quite calm.

How much does an Alaska cruise cost?

Alaska cruise prices depend on a variety of factors, but there can be deals if you are strategic about your sailing.

How much an Alaska cruise costs will depend on: cabin category, time of year, length of sailing, and cruise line you select.

An Alaskan cruise cost can range between $600 – $10,000 per person, but if that number sounds quite large, it's because there are so many choices that greatly impact the price of a cruise.

It's a mistake to assume all Alaska cruises are the same, as well as the price is going to be same regardless of when you sail or when you book.

The Best Cruise Lines for Sailing Alaska (2024)

When it comes to cruising, there’s nothing quite like sailing to Alaska. The natural landscape is rugged and untouched. Seemingly every turn of the ship is met with dramatic views. And sailing alongside massive mountains dwarfs even the biggest cruise ships.

Best cruise lines to Alaska

In short, if you haven’t visited Alaska, then you don’t quite know what you’re missing. No matter how many pictures or videos you watch, they won’t do the place justice.

When it comes to visiting, there is also no better way to do so than with a cruise. Given that roads are far fewer in this part of the world, you either need to fly or travel by boat to get to most places. On a cruise, you can sail along taking in the natural surroundings while visiting multiple ports in one trip — all while also enjoying the comforts of the ship. Wake up one day and you’ll see a glacier. Then you’ll see Juneau, Skagway , Sitka , and more spots, all in one voyage.

Over the past several years, interest and the number of cruises to Alaska has risen steadily. These days dozens of ships across multiple lines provide an array of options. While any cruise can take you to Alaska, however, not all lines are the same.

That’s why we’ve rounded up the best cruise lines for an Alaskan cruise depending on several different situations that might apply to your vacation.

First, there are some important things to know about the criteria for picking the best lines.

In This Article...

What to Know About Picking the Right Line for Alaska

Not sure which line is for you? Don’t worry if you’re overwhelmed by options as there are a lot out there. It’s helpful to keep a few things in mind.

Most Lines Sail Similar Routes: First, one thing that makes choosing a line simpler is that you don’t have to worry much about itineraries. Not all are the same (there are some ships that sail longer routes that take you deeper into the state), but for most cruises, you’re going to see similar or the same ports. Whereas Caribbean trips may have dozens of different port options including all throughout The Bahamas, Mexico, and more, Alaskan cruises have far fewer. So whether you sail Royal Caribbean or Carnival, Norwegian or Princess, you’re likely to have a roughly similar route.

Price: For some people, money is no object. For the rest of us, it is a major factor in selecting a cruise. The good news is given the fewer ports and routes, no matter what you spend, you’re likely to see similar sights during your cruise. However, there can be significant price differences based on ship, cruise lines, and time of year. Cruises departing before June and after August see lower prices. If budget is important to you, sail during these times.

Amenities/Ships: While price can be a big difference in your cruise to Alaska, perhaps where you’ll see the biggest variance is with the amenities and ships offered. These days cruise lines have put all sorts of different ships in the area, from nearly new mega ships with all the latest bells and whistles to older ships that carry far fewer people and generally have less to do. If you want to ride go-karts on the ship while spotting whales or just want a low-key time on a smaller ship taking in the sights, you can do it all.

Best Overall: Norwegian Cruise Line

alaska cruises spring 2024

We want to be clear: There is no “wrong” cruise line to sail Alaska. Given the beauty and experience, we’d take a row boat if it meant getting to visit. That said, depending on your specific wants for your cruise, some will be a better fit for you than others. In the case of Norwegian Cruise Line, we think it’s the best all-around option.

Norwegian has put a focus on Alaska for a long time. In the 2024 season, the cruise line shows four ships sailing regularly with another (Norwegian Spirit) making visits on longer trips. Ships include bigger vessels like Bliss and Encore, as well as older and smaller ships like Jewel and Sun. So no matter if you’re wanting all the latest and greatest amenities, activities, and restaurants, or if you want the cruise to be more about the scenery, there is a ship for you. We especially like the observation areas on ships like Encore , which provide a beautiful sweeping view of the landscape while still being inside.

NCL also does a good job of offering a lot of options for cruises. The traditional 7-day round trip tour is well represented. Then there are routes that offer more time by cruising north for seven days before ending in Seward, Alaska and then offering 7-day return voyages south. There are also sailings from both Vancouver and Seattle, offering more options.

Prices also run the gamut. Make no mistake that NCL is often more expensive than other lines. However, if sailing during the shoulder season you can find deals to match any budget. That includes a 9-day sailing aboard Norwegian Jewel round trip from Seattle for $499 per person in October. A 7-day cruise aboard Norwegian Bliss can be had for as little as $549.

Bottom line is that whether the itinerary, the price, the ship, or the amenities is most important to you, NCL has something to offer any traveler to Alaska.

Best for Families: Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean ship in Alaska

A trip to Alaska with kids is something they won’t forget. But there are special challenges when traveling as a family. Namely, kids will want lots to do no matter how jaw-dropping the scenery is where you’re sailing.

That’s why we consider Royal Caribbean to be the best cruise line for Alaska if sailing with children.

The line sails four ships in 2024 to Alaska — Radiance of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas, Ovation of the Seas, and Quantum of the Seas. All Royal Caribbean ships are known for pushing the envelope of what’s possible on a cruise ship, but Ovation and Quantum are newer and larger vessels that have a lot for kids to do.

This includes everything from bumper cars to Flowrider standing waves (in heated water!) to rock walls to RipCord by iFly (a skydiving simulator). There are even indoor pools available so that swimming is an option even in Alaska.

Brilliance and Radiance of the Seas are older and smaller ships but there are still kid-friendly options like putt-putt and rock walls to climb and arcades. And all ships have dedicated kids areas where children can play while being supervised and parents can enjoy the cruise on their own.

With these four ships you have options from both Vancouver and Seattle, including cruises with land tours added on.

Best Value: Princess

alaska cruises spring 2024

Is value important to you, then our top pick is Princess. The cruise line sails a large number of ships (we count seven in 2024) to Alaska. That large supply may be why the line offers some of the best prices for Alaskan cruises we’ve seen.

Remember, so much of the reason for cruising this part of the world is the ports and scenery. If that’s what is most important to you and all the lines offer similar itineraries, then it makes sense that you can save and still get a wonderful experience.

That’s not to say the cruise line is less desirable — far from it. We’ve personally sailed Princess (though not to Alaska) and would put it up against any major line in the industry. They simply offer some of the cheapest fares you’ll see.

Princess, for example, offers 7-day round trip cruises from Vancouver starting at just $398 per person (before taxes and fees) for a week in May. Even some cruises at the peak season can be had starting at less than $600 per person.

If you want the best deals, it does seem that sailing from Vancouver runs less expensive than cruising from Seattle. Just keep in mind any transportation cost getting to and from the port before you choose which port to sail from.

Best Luxury: Oceania

Want to sail in luxury? You have a lot of options. If you want a big ship experience, NCL offers The Haven, which is an exclusive and higher-end area aboard some of its ships. Other lines offer a true small-ship experience, sailing the area with anywhere from a few hundred to a little over a thousand passengers. This includes names like Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn, Viking, and Oceania.

In our opinion, you aren’t going to go wrong with any of these choices. We selected Oceania because we think it offers the best mix of “affordable” luxury with shorter schedules. For instance, many of the luxury cruises to Alaska offer 14-day round trips. Oceania offers round trip cruises aboard Oceania Regatta lasting from 7-12 days, offering both longer cruises and some shorter ones to match any schedule.

You also don’t have to spend as much to have the luxury experience. While not cheap, trips aboard the Regatta start around $2,200 per person for a 7-day cruise. Other luxury brands can be considerably more for a similar length trip. And for that price, you get extras that you don’t normally see on mass market lines. This includes hundreds in shore excursion credit and a beverage package.

Meanwhile, you also get a small ship experience aboard. Oceania Regatta is just 593 feet long and with 670 passengers at double occupancy. If you’ve ever wanted to visit Alaska on a cruise but were wary of mega ships, then a luxury option like Oceania could be for you.

On this page you will find a 2024 Alaska cruise schedule for Glacier Route cruises that travel between Vancouver and Whittier or Vancouver and Seward . In our experience, these represent the best Alaska cruise itineraries , allowing travelers to see more of Alaska's glaciers, wildlife, and scenery from both sea and land. You can use our cruise finder to see additional route options, including roundtrip Alaska cruises from Seattle and Vancouver .

Princess Cruises and Holland America Line use Whittier for their "turnaround" port, while other lines use Seward . Whittier is a bit closer to Anchorage, but Seward is a very scenic option, particularly if you have time to spend a night or two before or after your cruise. See our cruise tour page for ideas on combining your cruise with a land tour.

With a Norwegian Alaska cruise, you can choose from various departure ports, including Seattle and Vancouver . If you want a cruise that starts in Alaska, Seward is also a possible departure port in 2024.

2024 Alaska Cruise Port of Calls

Depending on the itinerary you choose, you could visit some of the following ports of call in Alaska:

  • Sitka: This scenic island is renowned for its seaside and mountain panoramic views. Learn about Sitka's history, go fishing, or look for other wildlife sighting opportunities.
  • Juneau: Juneau is a dynamic port of call for adventure seekers. Walk on the Mendenhall Glacier, take a boat ride along Tracy Arm Fjord for more glacier views, try panning for gold, and more.
  • Icy Strait Point: Icy Strait Point is where you'll find more wildlife than people.
  • Ketchikan: Explore the lush wilderness in Ketchikan and keep your eyes open for eagles atop the Sikta trees.
  • Skagway: Skagway is a remote town along the Inside Passage that was once home to more than 20,000 people seeking to get rich by panning for gold.
  • Seward: Seward offers plenty of adventure for outdoor enthusiasts who want to explore Alaska—go sea kayaking, dog-sledding, rafting, mountain biking, and more.
  • Valdez: Valdez is located along Prince William Sound and is full of diverse landscapes and plenty of wildlife.

Some of the best scenery comes courtesy of your cruising days through fjords and past majestic glaciers. Potential options include a cruising day through Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, home to glaciers, snow-capped mountains, and plenty of wildlife. Other possible cruising experiences include Hubbard Glacier, North America's largest tidewater glacier, and Endicott Arm fjord, where you'll find the 600-foot-tall Dawes Glacier.

Things to Do on a Cruise to Alaska

Alaska offers a landscape unlike any other in the United States of America. This rugged state is filled with wildlife and the prospect of adventure. While the snow peaks may be covered with snow, you’ll be surprised to find out that during the summer months Alaska can get into the 70s and sometimes up to the 80s at its peak.

Glacier Bay, Alaska

  • The waters surrounding the coast of Alaska are littered with amazing glaciers. Be sure to experience the Mendenhall glacier and Glacier Bay National Park. You’ll also be delighted to sail through Tracy Arm a 30-mile long fjord near Juneau.
  • Experience the unique culture of Alaska with a ride on a dog sled pulled by a team of huskies. You will also learn about the history of the yearly dog sled race, the Iditarod and spend some time with Husky pups.

Caribou in Denali Nation Park, Alaska

  • Taste the fresh flavors of Alaska at a typical Salmon Bake or at a Crab Feast. Both of these quintessential outdoor events offer authentic Alaskan cuisine served in typical Alaskan fashion.
  • Spot caribou, grizzly bears and eagles as you tour the expansive landscape of Denali National Park, home to Mount McKinley, the tallest peak in North America. The park also is a great spot to go fly fishing.

Totem pole in Alaska Heritage Center

  • Discover the stories behind Alaska’s natives through their striking totem poles carved into tree trunks, depicting family legends, events and beliefs. Ketchikan is home to the Totem Heritage Center and the Totem Bight State Historical Park.
  • Get a grasp on this land by heading up above the clouds in a small plane for a flight seeing adventure. This is truly an adventurous experience to spot the unspoilt landscape from an Eagle’s vantage point.

Map of Alaska:

Frequently asked questions about cruises to alaska, what is the best time to take an alaska cruise.

The peak season for Alaska cruises is from May through September. The most popular months are July and August when the weather is warmest and drier. May and September offer slightly cooler temperatures and the chance to see fall foliage, but also more affordable pricing.

What kind of clothing should I pack for an Alaska cruise?

Pack layers of warm clothing like sweaters, fleece jackets, hats, gloves, and waterproof jackets/pants. Temperatures can range from the 40s to 60s Fahrenheit. Also bring comfortable walking shoes, swimwear for the ship, and dressier outfits for formal nights onboard.

Can I see whales on an Alaska cruise?

Yes, it's very common to see whales from the cruise ship or on whale watching excursions, especially from April through September during the peak whale feeding season. Other wildlife like bald eagles, sea lions, and bears may also be spotted.

Do I need a passport for an Alaska cruise?

A passport is required for any cruise that begins or ends in Canada (Vancouver). For roundtrip Seattle cruises, a passport is highly recommended but other documentation like a birth certificate and photo ID may be accepted by the cruise line.

What are the chances of seeing the Northern Lights on an Alaska cruise?

The cruise season from May to September has long daylight hours, so the chances of seeing the Northern Lights are quite low. Late season cruises in September offer slightly better odds if conditions are right with clear, dark skies.

Will I see Denali when on an Alaska cruise?

No, you will not see Denali from a cruise ship during an Alaska cruise. To see Denali, you need to book a cruisetour package that includes an inland portion to Denali National Park. The cruisetours to Denali range from 7-14 nights total when combined with the cruise portion. Ask your cruise consultant for more information on Alaska cruisetours!

Can I go fishing when on an Alaska Cruise?

Yes, you can go fishing while on an Alaska cruise. Most major cruise lines offer fishing excursions and charters as shore excursions at ports like Ketchikan, Juneau, Seward, and others. One of the most popular fishing excursions is salmon fishing, where you can try to catch salmon. These are typically done from smaller fishing boats or charters that take you out into prime salmon fishing areas. For a more specialized experience, some cruises offer fly fishing excursions. These take you by float plane or boat to remote rivers and streams to fly fish for trout, salmon, arctic grayling and more. Popular fly fishing locations include areas around Juneau, Anchorage, and Fairbanks.

Where do Alaska cruises depart from?

Most Alaska cruises depart from Seattle, Vancouver, or Anchorage/Whittier. The "one-way" Gulf of Alaska cruises sail between Vancouver and Whittier.

What are the most popular cruise excursions in Alaska?

Top shore excursions include whale watching, glacier viewing, dog sledding on a glacier, flightseeing, river rafting, hiking, and cultural/history tours in port towns.

Are Alaska cruises wheelchair accessible?

Most cruise ships are designed to be wheelchair accessible with accessible staterooms, restaurants, pool areas, and shore excursions available. Let the cruise line know of any mobility requirements when booking.

How do I start planning my Alaska cruise?

By calling The Cruise Web, of course! We're ready for you at 1-800-377-9383

ULTIMATE Guide to Planning Your 1ST Trip to ALASKA

Alaska cruise prices.

Peak Alaska cruising season is from June to August

When planning for an Alaskan cruise adventure, a clear budget is essential, as costs can vary widely depending on the type of experience you’re looking for. For budget cruisers, the price for an inside cabin on a standard cruise line starts around $700-$1,200 per person . These rates typically cover the cruise itself, meals on board, and some limited entertainment options over a 3-5 day period.

Mid-range cruises will often feature more amenities, excursions, and the potential for outside cabins with views, with prices ranging from $1,500 to $4,000 per person . You’ll likely encounter more personalized services, a diverse range of onboard activities, and a variety of dining options that create a more memorable experience.

For those seeking the pinnacle of luxury and exclusivity, prices can soar to $3,000 to over $6,000 per person . Luxury cruises boast spacious suites with ocean views or balconies, gourmet dining, exclusive shore excursions, and an exceedingly high staff-to-guest ratio to ensure every need is catered to both on the ship and on land.

Bear in mind, these prices generally do not include additional costs like airfare to the cruise port, pre- and post-cruise accommodations, specialty dining, alcoholic beverages, gratuities, and some onshore activities and excursions.

When budgeting for an Alaskan cruise, these additional expenses should be considered to have a well-rounded estimate of the total cost.

What to Pack for an Alaskan Cruise

alaska cruises spring 2024

Your packing list for an Alaskan cruise during the summer season should strike a perfect balance between warmth, comfort, and practicality. Weather can be unpredictable, with cool mornings, pleasant afternoons, and chilly evenings. Here’s a detailed packing list to ensure you’re well-prepared:

  • Waterproof Jacket : A breathable, waterproof jacket is essential for those unpredictable rain showers! Even during July (Alaska’s “sunniest” month), cold, sideways rain is almost a daily reality.
  • Layering Pieces : Including thermal underwear, fleece jackets, or wool sweaters for insulation. Sweat-wicking socks are also a good idea!
  • T-Shirts and Long-Sleeve Shirts : The weather loves to play games in Alaska, with the mornings being in the 40s and the late afternoons being in the 70s! Layers are key.
  • Pants and Jeans : Durable and comfortable options for on-board wear and shore excursions.
  • Shorts or Skirts : For warmer days, particularly inside the cruise ship.
  • Formal Attire : At least one formal outfit for special evenings on the cruise is often required by the cruise line.
  • Sleepwear : Comfortable pajamas or loungewear for sitting out on the deck.
  • Sturdy Walking Shoes : For daily wear and exploring ports.
  • Waterproof Hiking Boots : If you plan on more adventurous excursions like glacier treks or helicopter landings !
  • Formal Shoes : For elegant dining experiences onboard, a good pair of dress shoes or simple flats that can be easily packed in your luggage. Heels can be worn. but they take up a lot of space and are often overlooked after a long day of walking.
  • Casual Shoes : Sandals or tennis shoes can be great options for days at sea.

When packing for an Alaska cruise, don't forget to bring plenty of layers

Outdoor Gear and Accessories

  • Gloves and Scarves : Even in the summer months, days out on the water can get very cold very quickly. Come prepared with winter accessories!
  • Sun Hat and Sunglasses : The reflection off the water can be harsh, and you don’t want to miss the sights by squinting!
  • Swimsuits : Chances are that your cruise will have a pool or hot tub available to you, so even though the ocean rarely rises above 50 degrees, you can still enjoy a dip!
  • Daypack or Backpack : Essential for carrying daily items and gear on excursions. I really like the Osprey Sportlite 25L for Alaska.
  • Binoculars : For wildlife spotting in the distance. Don’t forget that your Alaska cruise also doubles as your whale watching tour!
  • Insect Repellent : To ward off any pesky mosquitoes ashore or onboard. They can get quite nasty in the spring and summer!
  • Reusable Water Bottle : The summer can get quite hot in southeast Alaska, so stay hydrated with a reusable water bottle. We personally only use LifeStraw because we love their double-filtering system!

Miscellaneous

  • Sunscreen : The sun can be intense, even in cooler climates.
  • Toiletries : Including all personal hygiene products and medications.
  • Camera with Extra Batteries or Charger : The Alaskan scenery is something you’re going to want to capture.
  • Travel Guides and Maps : We’re big “travel guide” people, and we love Fodor’s Complete Guide to Alaska Cruises !
  • Seasickness Remedies : Such as bands or medication, if you are prone to motion sickness. Ginger chews also work well for some people!
  • Power Strip with USB Ports : Outlets can be limited, particularly in staterooms, so if you’re traveling with more than two people then this will probably be a lifesaver.
  • Waterproof Dry Bag : For keeping electronics and important documents safe and dry when on deck and on shore excursions.

Remember to check your cruise line’s luggage allowances and pack accordingly. It’s also beneficial to leave a little extra room for any Alaskan souvenirs you purchase while exploring!

FAQ: Cruising Alaska 2024

In this last section, we’ve provided our top tips regarding your upcoming Alaska cruise including when to go, if and when you’ll need to show your passport, the most popular departure points, and more!

What is the Best Month to Go to Alaska via Cruise?

alaska cruises spring 2024

The peak Alaska cruising season runs from June to August due to the warmer weather, long daylight hours, and the abundant wildlife viewing opportunities . However, the best month to cruise to Alaska typically depends on what you want from your voyage!

If you prefer a quieter cruise with fewer tourists and don’t mind cooler temperatures, consider sailing in the pre- and post-season months of May or September . May often showcases a beautiful spring bloom, while September brings the dazzling fall colors and potential for northern lights sightings .

The downfall to cruising to Alaska in the off-season months is that some excursions may only be available during the summer, meaning you could miss out on some key experiences.

What is the Average Cost of a 7 Day Alaska Cruise?

The average cost of a 7-day cruise to Alaska typically ranges between $1,000 to $2,500 per person. This cost includes accommodation, meals, and onboard activities and entertainment . However, average costs can vary widely due to factors such as the cruise line, the type of cabin you select, and the time of year you travel.

Mainstream cruise lines may offer deals as low as $599 per person for an interior cabin during the off-peak season, while premium and luxury lines can charge several thousand dollars per person for suites with exclusive amenities.

To cater to diverse budgets, many cruise lines offer different accommodation levels and package options. Price variations also reflect the extent of onboard experiences, shore excursions, and dining choices.

It’s also important to remember that you’ll need to factor in additional costs such as onboard gratuities, excursion fees, and travel insurance (we always use SafetyWing !), which can add to the overall expenditure.

Which Cruise Line is Best for an Alaskan Cruise?

alaska cruises spring 2024

When selecting the best cruise line for an Alaskan voyage, it really depends on your personal preferences and what you hope to get out of the experience. Those seeking a fun, mid-range experience will likely enjoy mainstream cruise lines such as Carnival , Holland America Line , or Royal Caribbean .

For a more luxurious and all-inclusive experience, consider premium or luxury lines like Seabourn , Silversea , or Regent Seven Seas .

Some other highly rated options for Alaska cruises include Celebrity Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line .

Do You Need a Passport for an Alaskan Cruise?

Whether you need a passport for an Alaskan cruise depends on your itinerary. For cruises that visit Canadian ports, as many Alaska cruises do, a passport is required . The rules also apply to all forms of identification for minors.

For “Closed Loop” cruises, which start and end at the same U.S. port and travel solely between U.S. ports, U.S. citizens may not need a passport . Instead, they can travel with a government-issued photo ID and an original birth certificate.

However, most cruise lines strongly recommend traveling with a valid passport in case of emergency, such as an unexpected flight from a foreign port or medical evacuation – these scenarios would require a passport for re-entry into the United States.

It is always best to check the specific requirements of the cruise line you are traveling with and stay up to date on travel regulations. With border laws subject to change, the safest option is to travel with a valid passport.

Can You See Northern Nights on Alaska Cruises?

It's not very likely to see the northern lights on an Alaskan cruise

Viewing the northern lights, or Aurora Borealis, is a breathtaking experience that’s possible on some Alaskan cruises, particularly during the late fall and early spring months when the nights are the longest .

However, the best time of year to see the northern lights in Alaska would be from September to April when the skies are darkest and the solar activity is more pronounced, which contradicts the state’s cruising season.

It’s worth noting that sightings are never guaranteed as they depend on solar activity and weather conditions. Many cruise lines will offer itineraries that sail near the Arctic Circle to increase the chance of witnessing this natural phenomenon.

For the best chance, cruises that provide shore excursions to Denali National Park or stays in Fairbanks are recommended. These regions offer prime northern lights viewing opportunities due to their northern location and darker skies away from city lights.

Is It Cold on a Cruise to Alaska?

The temperatures on an Alaskan cruise can indeed be chilly, especially if you are cruising during the shoulder months of May or September . During peak summer months, which are June through August, you can typically expect milder temperatures ranging from 50°F to 70°F (10°C to 21°C) .

However, when the ship is sailing through glacial areas, the temperature can drop significantly due to the proximity to ice and the wind chill factor. It’s recommended that passengers prepare for a range of weather conditions by layering clothing. We can’t say this one enough!

Packing items such as a waterproof jacket, fleece or sweater, and hat and gloves can make exploring the deck and participating in shore excursions more comfortable. Don’t forget to consider the use of thermal wear if you tend to be sensitive to colder temperatures. With appropriate attire, you can enjoy the stunning Alaskan scenery in comfort!

Are Alaska Cruises All Inclusive?

alaska cruises spring 2024

Standard cruises usually include accommodation, most meals, and a variety of entertainment options onboard . However, many cruises may not cover specialty dining, certain beverages, some onboard activities, and most shore excursions.

Premium or luxury cruise lines offer all-inclusive packages, which include amenities such as gratuities, specialty dining, select shore excursions, and even airfare! Cruise lines such as Regent Seven Seas and Silversea often provide more inclusive experiences.

For those looking for an all-encompassing Alaskan adventure without the worry of additional charges, it’s worth investing in these higher-end options. Always make sure to read the fine print before booking to understand exactly what your cruise package includes!

Where Do Alaska Cruises Leave From?

The most common departure cities for Alaska cruises are Seattle, Washington, and Vancouver, British Columbia . Alaska cruises typically depart from various ports that are conveniently located along the West Coast of the United States and Canada.

Seattle offers a range of cruises, from mainstream to luxury, with many cruise lines providing round-trip options. Vancouver is notable for its picturesque setting and often serves as the start or end point for one-way cruises along the Inside Passage.

Other departure points can include San Francisco, California , and Seward or Whittier , both located in Alaska and often used for one-way itineraries that travel deeper into the Gulf of Alaska.

How Far in Advance Should You Book an Alaskan Cruise?

Many Alaska cruises travel by Hubbard Glacier and into the Inside Passage from either Vancouver or Seattle

When planning an Alaskan cruise, it’s generally recommended to book at least 12 to 18 months in advance . Booking early has several advantages such as better cabin selection, more itinerary options, and the possibility of early booking discounts!

Additionally, due to the limited cruising season in Alaska, which runs from May to September, cruises can fill up very quickly. For those interested in specific cabin types or have limited travel dates, booking early can be especially important to secure your desired cruise experience!

Pro Tip: Everything in Alaska books up about a year in advance. Just to put it in perspective for you, we got married in Seward in July 2022, and we had to book our wedding cake 9 months in advance! Hotels were booked up 10 months in advance and cruises were all but fully booked about 11 months in advance. What we’re saying is… book early!

Which is the Best Side of a Cruise Ship to Be on When Cruising to Alaska?

For one-way cruises traveling northbound past Hubbard Glacier and into the Inside Passage, a starboard (right) side cabin can offer picturesque views of the coastline . Conversely, on southbound itineraries, the port (left) side of the ship is advantageous for those same coastal vistas.

That being said, many cruisers prefer rooms with balconies in the middle of the ship for stability and uninterrupted views of both sides. Since routes can vary and the scenery is spectacular on all sides, an outside cabin with a balcony or window shouldn’t be overlooked simply due to the side of the ship that it’s on!

Additionally, if you’re prone to getting motion sick, a cabin on the lower decks in the middle of the ship can help alleviate symptoms. For those looking for that prime northern lights viewing opportunity, some cruise lines offer balcony cabins facing north, so just be sure to check with your specific cruise line for availability and details!

Are the Waters Rough on an Alaskan Cruise?

alaska cruises spring 2024

The waters on an Alaskan cruise, while generally calm especially in the protected Inside Passage, can sometimes be rough, particularly in the Gulf of Alaska or when crossing open stretches such as the northern Pacific Ocean .

It is also not uncommon for ships to encounter choppy waters when navigating around the more exposed areas of the coastline or near glacial fjords. However, modern cruise ships are well-equipped with stabilizers to minimize motion, ensuring a smoother experience for passengers.

It is advisable for those prone to seasickness to prepare with medication or natural remedies and to select a cabin location towards the middle of the ship, where there is typically less motion.

The best time to cruise Alaska isn't obvious—until you're quietly sailing along its calm waters under a cloudless, late-spring sky. It was on one such day that someone on board spotted a whale breaching. And then again. And again. Within minutes it seemed everyone on board had gathered at the railings on deck to watch. The captain of the ship nimbly repositioned us, giving both the port and starboard sides prime viewing, at a safe and respectful distance from the animals. With binoculars, cameras, and phones at the ready, the passengers and crew aboard  UnCruise Adventures'  86-guest  S.S. Legacy  settled in for what turned out to be an hour-long private show by a juvenile humpback who had migrated from Hawaii to spend the summer in the nutrient-rich Alaskan waters.

This is but one of the incredible experiences that may be had when visiting Alaska in the “secret season”—springtime. Not only are the flowers and plant life awakening from their wintertime slumber, so is its wildlife. Though the state’s more temperate summer season has long attracted its largest numbers of visitors, an increasing number of in-the-know travelers are looking to spring as the best time to cruise to Alaska , when they can count on fewer crowds—and increased savings—without sacrificing their chance to take advantage of the state’s landscape and  wildlife sightings .

On that same late-April voyage with UnCruise, the  Northern Lights  danced through the sky on night one, and through the week we spotted grizzly bear mamas and their cubs skirting the coastline; bald eagles soaring overhead; humpback whales and orcas breaking the water’s surface to breathe; puffins, seals, and sea lions bobbing in the water and laying out on rocks—even a wolf on the shoreline, feasting on a fresh kill. (Our captain said he had seen a wolf in Alaska only twice in his 30-year career.)

We sailed roundtrip from Juneau, and while I’ve visited the capital city during the busy summer months, I found the restaurants, bars, and shops much less crowded, reliably filled with locals for the most part. On the water, we rarely passed any other ships or boats, aside from fishermen out for their catches.

According to  Travel Alaska , cruising is the most popular way to explore the state, and Cruise Lines International Association Alaska predicts that 1.64 million cruise line passengers will sail to and within Alaska in 2024.

But when is really the best time to sail Alaska? We’ve broken the seasons down for you, including the highlights of each, as well as the best cruise lines and cruise ships to consider so you can make your bucket list dreams come true.

Celebrity Alaska Cruise

Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Edge sets sail for the first time in Alaska this year.

April and May

If your schedule allows, not only does sailing Alaska in April and May afford the possibilities of glimpsing the Northern Lights and seeing wildlife emerge from their winter hibernation, it’s a more affordable and less crowded time to cruise, too. April and May are also the driest months in Alaska, so the chances of rain are slim.

Norwegian Cruise Line kicks off the 2024 Alaska cruise season when Norwegian Bliss sets sail on a weeklong, roundtrip itinerary from Seattle; she will be the only ship sailing in Alaska the first two weeks of spring. Balcony cabins are still available on the season’s inaugural sailing at a discounted fare of $1,029 per person .

Smaller ships like those that comprise UnCruise Adventures ’ and Alaska Dream Cruises ’ fleets can maneuver closer to the coastline for better views of bears rambling along the beaches and on-land excursions without another soul around. Uncruise’s 12-night “Inside Passage” itinerary departs April 15 with rates starting at $6,300 per person , and Alaska Dream Cruises’ seven-night “Last Frontier Adventure” has starting rates from $3,995 per person .

June to August

Warmer temperatures, an average of 17 hours of daylight, and schools’ summer vacations all make Alaska a popular destination for cruising in June, July, and August. Expect crowded ports and more ships out on the water, but that’s not to say it’s not a good time to set sail: bears are still active, as are whales and native bird life.

Holland America Line, which has sailed in Alaska for 75 years, offers 50 itineraries throughout June, July, and August, including the new 28-day Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice itinerary that departs June 9 from Seattle; verandah staterooms start at $7,259 per person . Family favorite Disney Cruise Line offers 13 itineraries over the summer, including a seven-night itinerary from $3,467 per person .

Not only is school back in session in September, which means fewer crowds at ports, but the chances of seeing the Northern Lights return, especially if combining your cruise with a land tour that takes you further north into Alaska. Fall is also mating season for wildlife, so expect to see some friskiness.

Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Edge sets sail for the first time in Alaska this year and has four six- and seven-night itineraries in September, starting at $599 per person . For a cruise-tour option, Princess ’ 12-day Denali Explorer itinerary blends five days on land with a weeklong cruise with mini-suite rates from $4,008 per person .

The Alaska cruise season winds down in October, with only a few ships setting sail. Just as in April and May, you’ll likely have the water to yourself, and even fewer people in the ports you call upon. Along with cooler weather, you’ll also find lower fares that will please your bank account.

Just as Norwegian Cruise Line kicks off the 2024 Alaska cruise season in April, it’s the last cruise line to set sail in the state, and the only one to sail in October. The seven- and nine-day itineraries sail roundtrip from Seattle, and a recent search found fares more than 80% off published fares, starting at $499 per person .

Uncover treasures in the Great Land on an Alaska cruise from Vancouver. Relive Gold Rush history, experience Native Alaskan culture and come face-to-face with some of Mother Nature’s greatest masterpieces. On a roundtrip Inside Passage cruise, enjoy quicker access to Alaska while also exploring the friendly ports of British Columbia.

Itinerary Ports

When you cruise to Alaska from Vancouver, encounter unique ports of call that are rich in history, culture and natural beauty.

  • Endicott Arm
  • Glacier Bay National Park
  • Hubbard Glacier
  • Icy Strait Point

Endicott Arm is a jewel in Alaska’s crown. This 30-mile waterway is surrounded by cliffs, valleys and dozens of waterfalls. Icebergs and harbor seals decorate the water below while Dawes Glacier soars into the sky above. Revel in the beauty of Mother Nature’s masterpiece and listen closely as the scenery whispers secrets of times long ago during your cruise to Alaska.

When you cruise to Alaska with Princess, sail through one of the most iconic locations in the Great Land — Glacier Bay National Park. Listen to Margerie Glacier’s signature crack and boom rumble across the waves. Bring binoculars and scan both the shore and the waves for wildlife like brown bears and migrating whales while Park Rangers teach you the history and geology of the park.

Located between the Chilkat River and the Lynn Canal, Haines is the home of the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, where as many as 4,000 bald eagles gather each fall to feast on spawning salmon along the river. As many as 80 have been seen perched in a single tree and more than a hundred may be captured within the frame of a single photograph.

The largest tidewater glacier in North America, Hubbard Glacier has been moving its mass towards the ocean at a rate faster than most of its kind. Towering above the water over 30 stories, the glacier often calves 100-foot chunks of ice into the ocean. What lies beneath the waves is almost as impressive, where ice plunges 1,200 feet beneath the surface. See it for yourself on an Alaska cruise with Princess.

Icy Strait Point is home to the remote Tlingit village of Hoonah, home to fewer than 800 people and a deep Native history. The nearby Spasski River Valley holds one of the world’s largest populations of brown bears, who are often found hunting for salmon in the rivers. Zipline over the wilderness, watch a tribal dance or kayak in coastal waters to see the wildlife up close during your Alaska cruise vacation.

Juneau is unlike any other city in the United States. With no roads connecting it to the rest of Alaska or North America, it is truly a protected destination. Founded as a gold mining town and now the state’s capital, Juneau has one foot in history and one in the future. Embark on a whale watching tour, or sail past Mendenhall Glacier on an Alaska cruise.

Known for its timber, Ketchikan hosts the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show, where athletes throw, race and chop their way to victory. Explore one of the world’s oldest collection of totem poles at the Totem Pole Heritage Center, or stroll along Creek Street. As the salmon capital of the world, Ketchikan’s waters make for incredible fishing. Cast your rod into a sea of opportunity on a cruise to Alaska.

On an Alaska cruise, take your pick of attractions in the port of Sitka. See how bald eagles and local bird populations receive first-class treatment at the Alaska Raptor Center. Encounter wildlife in their natural habitat at the Fortress of the Bear. Or experience the culture of Russian Alaska on a visit to St. Michael’s Russian Orthodox Church, and relive Native history at the Sheldon Jackson Museum.

Once the gateway to Alaska's Gold Rush, Skagway strikes a dramatic image nestled between the water's edge and mountains. Follow in the footsteps of miners with a ride on a scenic train along the famous White Pass route through coastal mountains. During your Alaska cruise, explore the Yukon's pristine wilderness, pan for gold with professionals or meet sled dog puppies in training.

Canada's third largest city feels like a North American metropolis mixed with a small European town. Explore the rainforest within Vancouver, B.C. — Stanley Park — and visit the continent's second largest Chinatown during your Alaska cruise vacation. Soar above the city's lush natural environment in a sky gondola for panoramic views, or get up close to the local sea life at the Vancouver Aquarium.

Alaska Glaciers

One of the biggest reasons people visit

Glaciers feel alive. They groan, creak and shudder on their march to the sea, punctuated by the booms and crashes of "white thunder" — a sound that echoes across the water when ice calves into the ocean below. On an Alaska cruise, let us show you Glacier Bay National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — Endicott Arm & Dawes Glacier, College Fjord or Hubbard Glacier.

Alaska Wildlife

Untamed, just like Alaska

Alaska is home to a rich array of wildlife, from the famous Big Five animals that live in Denali National Park — grizzly bears, wolves, moose, Dall sheep and caribou — to bald eagles and humpback whales that migrate through the Inside Passage. On a cruise to Alaska, live a nature lover's dream in the land where guests can catch postcard-worthy sights.

Alaska Mountains & National Parks

National treasures

With national parks and four of North America’s tallest mountains, Alaska’s wilderness has been preserved for generations. Denali National Park is larger than Vermont and home to the highest peak on the continent. Meanwhile, Glacier Bay National Park has over 2,000 square miles of glacial coverage. Along with Wrangell-St. Elias and Kenai Fjords, a world of natural wonders awaits on an Alaska cruise or cruisetour.

Alaska excursions

Don't just visit this famous land, live it on Alaska excursions. Rush across the snow on a dog sled with a professional musher, fly fish for salmon in fresh rivers and soar over miles of glacial tundra in a helicopter. Watch migrating humpback whales from the deck of a catamaran or Native craftsman carve a traditional totem pole, and expand your Alaska cruise experience.

Alaska Cruise Onboard Experience

Our award-winning North to Alaska program brings local personalities, culture and cuisine on board and ashore to immerse you in all things Alaska during your cruise to the Great Land.

Fresh and bountiful, like Alaska itself

Alaska's seafood is famous, and we bring the best to you with locally inspired dishes from the state’s best eateries. With Cook My Catch excursions, catch your own salmon or halibut with the help of a local expert, and in the evening our talented chefs will prepare your haul for your dinner — a Princess exclusive. Or listen to harrowing Tales from the Deadliest Catch fishermen and climbers who have summited Denali during your Alaska cruise.

McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge, explore our treehouse and enjoy unmatched views of Denali. Or savor tree-inspired bites at our very own Sappy Hour.
