If you and your partner love visiting new places together, or if it seems like both of you have a never-ending case of wanderlust, then a travel-themed wedding makes total sense for you when it's time to start planning your big day. Luckily, there are plenty of travel theme wedding ideas you can use to incorporate your love of exploration and adventure into your wedding decor. Whether you're into backpacking, glamorous getaways, or something in between, these ideas will help jumpstart your travel-themed wedding vision board.

What is a travel-themed wedding?

The travel-themed wedding style tends to be a mixture of  boho and whimsical aesthetics , with the ultimate goal of creating an ambience that's both welcoming and eclectic—most importantly, it should be full of your personality and love of travel! Popular decor accents for a travel theme include things like globes, vintage suitcases, postcards, airplane motifs, stamps, and maps. Bright  wedding colors  are an easy way to give your travel-themed wedding a boost of fun, so we suggest choosing eye-catching colors like yellow, blue, red, fuchsia, and turquoise.

Passport wedding invitations

We love this alternative invitation idea if you're having a destination wedding. Work with your wedding stationer to create a themed stationery booklet that looks like a passport—you can include all of the important  wedding invitation details , along with helpful travel tips for your guests.

Comfortable wedding attire

Practical attire is especially important if your travel-themed wedding is taking place in an unexpected locale, like at the top of a mountain. Skip the fancy gowns, tuxedos, and footwear in favor of clothes that make it easy to move around (hiking boots optional!) and are appropriate for your venue.

Engraved compass wedding gift

Watches are a popular wedding day gift to give your spouse, but for a travel wedding theme, why not surprise your S.O. with a personalized compass instead? This one has a sweet engraved message on the back that reads, "So you can always find your way back home."

Airplane hangar wedding venue

Don't hesitate to think outside the box when it comes to your travel-themed wedding venue. Unique transportation-inspired venues, like airplane hangars, aviation museums, and train stations, will add an extra-memorable element to your special day.

Globe wedding guest book

Skip the traditional tabletop guest book and ask your guests to sign a globe instead. Not only does it match the travel-themed wedding aesthetic, but it's something you'll actually want to display it in your home after the wedding. Check out local thrift stores for vintage globes, or  purchase a customized one on Etsy .

Inspiration for Your Travel Themed Wedding or Destination Wedding

Last updated: June 14, 2024 - Written by Jessica Norah 106 Comments

Planning a travel themed wedding? The goal of this article is to provide inspiration for couples planning a travel inspired wedding or destination wedding.

I guess you could say that Laurence and I had a travel-themed wedding although it was more of a destination wedding. We legally married at sea aboard the RMS Queen Mary 2 in the Atlantic Ocean. Then we had a small ceremony in Venice Italy for family and friends to celebrate our wedding in Venice .

Even though we did not have the most traditional wedding ceremony or reception, I spent quite a bit of time online researching awesome travel themed wedding items and ideas about ways a couple could incorporate their wanderlust and love of travel into their wedding ceremony and wedding reception.

We’ve put together a list of over 100 items that we think would be perfect for a travel-themed wedding. These include travel themed wedding invitations, wedding rings, wedding decorations, table place cards, cake toppers, DIY ideas, wedding favor gifts, and more!

Many of our recommendations are focused on handmade items and unique products that can be customized to fit the style of any wedding couple. We include items that should fit just about any type of wedding and suit any wedding budget.

We have physically reviewed many of these items and hope you enjoy this list of wonderful travel themed wedding items. We hope it inspires you and gives you plenty of ideas for your own travel themed wedding!

100+ Ideas for a Travel Themed Wedding

In 2015, one survey of American wedding couples found that approximately 21% have a destination wedding of some sort, whether domestically or internationally. The study found that there are more than 350,000 destination weddings each year, 77% of which take place in the continental US and 23% at international destinations with the Caribbean and Mexico being the two most popular destinations.

However, not all couples want or can have a destination wedding, but many still want to incorporate their love of travel into their wedding celebration. You don’t have to have a destination wedding to fill your marriage celebration with travel inspired touches.

So we are sharing over 100 products we found during our search that we thought would be perfect for a travel themed wedding or a destination wedding. These simple travel themed wedding decorations can help transport your guests to another land, and make them feel like they’re on holiday, even if they are still in their hometown.

I got truly interested in the topic of how to incorporate elements of travel into one’s wedding after we decided to get customized engagement/wedding rings with a strong travel element.  Many of the items on this list we physically reviewed. Some were items we purchased or received as gifts, and others were given to us by artists for review. Other products are just ones I loved when researching travel themed weddings online.

The majority of the items included on our list are handmade or hand customized items, made by a single artist, family, or a small business. Many of these items are truly unique and the majority can be customized to include elements that are special to you.

Note that most wedding items are marketed towards heterosexual couples with bride/groom and his/her versions. However, given that most of our recommended items can be personalized, most artists are happy to adjust wording/colors/features to suit a gay wedding, civil union, nonbinary couple, etc. Just message them to ask!

We know that many people, like us, want to try to support local businesses when we can, and with Etsy it is easy to find products that are made in one’s own country. We share items that are made worldwide, with a large number of products produced in the USA, Canada, and the UK. But we also include items made by artists in Australia, the Ukraine, France, India, Brazil, Israel, etc.

When shopping, we recommend ordering items well before you need them for the wedding. Personalized and custom orders will take longer to make and international shipping times can be slow.

Although we chose these items specifically for a travel themed wedding, many of these items will also work for travel themed bridal showers, bon voyage parties, birthday parties, baby showers, engagement parties, wedding couple gifts, and just as general travel-related gifts.

There are so many possible ways to incorporate travel elements into your wedding, and we have tried to cover a variety of items from cake toppers to wedding invitations to wedding favors to wedding jewelry. We also tried to include items that fit a number of budgets and types of weddings.

We hope that this list helps inspire you to incorporate some element of your own wanderlust into your upcoming wedding or party!

Let’s get started!

Travel Themed Bow Ties & Neck Ties

Adding a travel themed bow tie or neck tie to your wedding wardrobe is an elegant but subtle way to incorporate your love of travel into your special day.

If you are purchasing a bow tie, be sure to note if it comes pre-tied or not, and whether it can be self-tied. Most grooms will prefer one style or the other.

For weddings, especially if there are a lot of groomsmen wearing matching bow ties, it is often recommended by wedding photographers to wear pre-tied bow ties for the photo shoot so that all the ties are a uniform size and shape in the wedding photos. So, some grooms may want one of each.

Travel Themed Guestbooks & Guestbook Alternatives

A guestbook is often one of the most treasured wedding keepsakes for a wedding couple as it contains the personal well wishes from all the wedding guests. A guestbook is often one of the first things that wedding guests see at your wedding, so it can be a good way to introduce the travel theme of the wedding.

Often the wedding couple has a guest book available to sign for people entering or exiting the wedding ceremony and then move it later to the reception so anyone who didn’t get a chance to sign at the ceremony can do it then.

If your guestbook is a bit unique, you may want to make sure you nominate a friend or family member to be in charge of letting guests know about your guest book. They can also show them how to use it if it requires any explanation.

When choosing a guestbook option, don’t forget to consider how many people are on your wedding guest list, to ensure that all guests have enough space to sign it. Many of the options below have different sizes available, while others come with the option to add extra pages for larger wedding parties.

Also note that most of our recommended guest books can also be used as a photo album if you prefer to use it to display photos of you and your partner, or if you wish for guests to take photos at the reception with an instant camera and add them to the book. Just be sure to check with the seller before purchasing if it is not clear.

Travel Themed Wedding Card Boxes

Your wedding guests may wish to give you a wedding card with their well-wishes on your special day, but with the hustle and bustle of the day, it can be hard to try to gather these throughout the day. So many wedding couples have a special place with a wedding card box where guests can drop it off.

Wedding couples often place these at the wedding reception with a sign so guests know they can drop off their cards and any gifts in a dedicated space. It may make sense to place it beside your guest book.

These travel themed wedding card boxes can also make a beautiful keepsake long after the wedding day.

Travel Themed Table Numbers & Place Card Holders

Depending on how you are organizing your wedding, you may be having your guests sit at specified tables and perhaps in specified seats. If so, you may need table numbers to designate each table and/or place card holders to designate the seat for each guest.

It is easy to add a travel themed touch to your table numbers and place card holders. For instance, instead of using traditional table numbers, you can designate tables using city names, country names, or photos of your favorite attractions.

Also, for those serving sit down dinners, if you are planning to have printed menus at the tables, you may want to think about doing one that matches the table place cards.

Travel Themed Wedding Candles

Wedding candles are a way of symbolizing the uniting of two families. Often the bride and groom will light separate candles with their families, and bring them together to light a new candle as they start their next big adventure together. They are also often used to light churches and reception halls and as table centerpieces and decorations.

It is easy to add a sense of wanderlust to your candle choices, whether it is through the way the candle looks, its holder, or its scent. For scented candles, you may want to choose a specific scent for candles on the tables that fits a specific destination for a themed wedding.

If planning to burn them, look for non-toxic natural wax (paraffin free) candles. Just note that not all guests love scented candles as some people are very sensitive or allergic to them. So if you have them at the guest tables, you may want to have someone ask guests at each table before lighting and have some LED backups.

My dream is to have a ceremony on the beach at sunset. Is this a good idea? It’s important to give myself a few days to relax prior to the wedding.

October 3, 2017 at 2:03 pm

Hi Stacey, I think that it is your dream, then you should do it as long as your spouse-to-be is also on board with the idea. It can be tricky to have an outdoor wedding but I would just have it somewhere where the weather is normally warm and predictable and have a plan if the weather is less than ideal (an alternative indoor venue). If you are working with a wedding planner, they should be able to help get everything worked out for you. Giving yourself a few days to relax in advance sounds like a great plan! Wishing you a wonderful beach wedding, Jessica

Hi Lissa, Yes, when we got married on the Queen Mary 2 ( https://independenttravelcats.com/2015/12/22/wedding-at-sea-married-cunard-queen-mary-2-wedding/ ), we did very little planning as your options are obviously more limited and you have a wedding coordinator who helps you out and does the work of setting things up. We just had to come up with readings and music and make some selections regarding vows, flowers, food, etc. Very easy which was perfect for us! ~ Jesica

Lots of nice products (and lots of research to put it all together!). I myself organized a travel themed barmitzva for my son a couple of years ago – lots of work went into travel video making (about all countries he visited) and decorations (every table was themed with a different country) but it was a lot of fun and quite unusual for a barmitsva! Needless to say- our wedding happened while travelling too (in Eastern Europe some 20+yrs ago).. while not too many people got to witness it, I would not do it any other way. It makes the day so special!

May 29, 2016 at 8:00 am

Hi Victoria, Haha, yes, it was a lot of research but so fun to find out about so many interesting products and such talented independent artists and small businesses! Sounds like a very special barmitzva for your son! My friend did something similar with her wedding although it was more wildlife themed (her and her husband worked at a nature preserve) and each table represented animals from different parts of the world. A fun way to decorate and make each table unique. Best, Jessica

This post is so full of inspiration for wanderlust-full celebrations. I love the passport and boarding pass save-the-dates and invitations.

May 22, 2016 at 10:57 am

Hi Erin, Yes, I think since most people now send Save the Dates as well as invites, it is nice to establish a theme if one is going to have one before the actual wedding day. But I think these invites are great even alone without having a travel themed wedding or destination wedding. The passports can provide a lot more information than a normal paper invite, including all the travel, pre-ceremony, venue, ceremony, and registry details as you can add as many pages as you need. ~ Jessica

This is a super timely article as I’m actually getting married next year! I love the map flowers bouquet idea because I’m not really fond of fresh cut flowers (found a bug in a bouquet once, ugh) and I think it’s a bit of a waste when they die so quickly after. Thanks for the inspiration!

May 21, 2016 at 5:19 am

Congrats on your upcoming wedding. Yes that map flowers bouquet is a great idea and I think paper flowers are becoming more popular for the reasons you are said, cleaner and can keep forever, but also because one can buy them ahead, travel with them, and store them just about anywhere. I also love the fact that you can customize these so much. Glad you found this post inspirational for your wedding! ~ Jessica

Your post made me so jealous! I got married almost 4o years ago, when there was no such thing as a ‘themed wedding.” In my country of origin people were married in a very traditional way, so this is how I got married to, but I would have loved to have a wedding like yours. Recently I attended a themed wedding for my niece though, in Florence. It was very beautiful, but nothing like yours. You’ve exceeded everything I’ve ever seen or heard so far. Wow!

May 21, 2016 at 4:48 am

Hi Anda, Yes, I think weddings, particularly for Americans, have become much more for the couple and what they would like to do and less about the family. I think it has to do partly with the fact that wedding couples are much more likely to pay for at least part, if not all, of their own wedding rather than the bride’s parents paying for most of it (many can’t afford to do this). Our wedding on the boat was private and fairly simple, and our wedding in Venice looks fabulous in photos, which it was of course, but it was also very small and informal. It was great for us as it was pretty stress-free! ~ Jessica

Jessica, we got our travel inspiration from our honeymoon, but if I could turn back time and have a travel inspired wedding I would chose some of these items. I love the bow tie, cufflinks, bouquet, cake topper and invitations, but adored your luggage. I first noticed your luggage in your wonderful Orient Express post. The rings are also a great idea for replacing expensive, sentimental rings when travelling which is something that is a need for many., but something I have never thought of doing. Finally I love that final photo of your dress and luggage on the bed in your beautiful Venetian hotel. Great post and thank you for linking up with #TheWeeklyPostcard

May 20, 2016 at 5:49 pm

Hi Lyn, Yes, I know, these make me want to get married again and I just got married! You have a good eye, yes, this is the same luggage we took on both the Queen Mary 2 and Orient Express. After the wedding the cosmetic case (because our wedding party didn’t have room to take it back) ended up traveling with us through Italy, Morocco, and Egypt…probably not the best choice of luggage for desert travel but it survived. Laurence is thinking about wearing his map bow tie and cufflinks when he gives a speech at an upcoming travel conference which I think will be perfect:) We love our rings, and if you are looking for unique travel rings, I can highly recommend Bruce. We got fabulous service, communication, and products from him! He has some amazing ready-to-buy designs and I love you can also customize. ~ Jessica

So many great ideas here, Jessica! I am getting closer to this stage with my daughters (not quite yet!), but I know one of them has talked about a destination wedding. I actually bought the cuff links for my husband with our hometown on them, just for fun. The cake toppers are really cute – that would be so special. There are so many creative alternatives to the “standard issue” things I did back in the day. Helps you get excited for something very special:)

40 Creative Travel Themed Ideas for Your Wedding

' src=

Want to have a destination wedding but don’t have the budget? Here are some of our favorite ideas to bring a travel theme to wherever you are! Your guests will enjoy going on a mini-vacation at your themed wedding!

What is a Travel Theme?

A travel-themed wedding is perfect for couples who love the idea of travel. Whether it is a broad travel theme, or a specific location that you are taking inspiration from, this wedding theme is a great option for those who are always looking forward to the next trip they are taking.

Some brides will choose to have a broad “travel” theme with no specific location they are traveling to. This theme has a lot of room for creative decorative elements and is definitely unique. From plane ticket invitations, to assorted “global” elements tied into your centerpieces, the options for travel related decor and theme ideas are endless.

Travel themes can work well for brides who are drawn to rustic weddings, but you want more specific themed elements tied in.

Travel Destination Theme Ideas

If you have a specific location that you remember traveling to that you would like to draw inspiration from, you can think back to that trip and what made it so special. For example, if you want to have a romantic Parisian themed wedding after a memorable trip there, you could make your travel theme more tailored towards French cuisine and travel elements.

Another great option is to celebrate the countries that you and your partner are from on your travel themed wedding day. If you would really love to have your wedding at your home country but you are unable to afford a destination wedding, a travel theme can open the doors to tying cultural elements into your special day.

Here are some amazing travel themed wedding ideas for couples who want to go the distance with their partner! Travel-themed wedding ideas are easy to incorporate throughout your special day.

Adventurous Travel Wedding Theme Ideas to Adore

  • by Marisa Jenkins
  • June 29, 2024

Dreaming of a wedding that whisks you and your guests away on a global adventure, without ever leaving your venue? A travel-themed wedding might be just the ticket. It’s a fantastic way to celebrate your love for exploration and each other, creating a unique and unforgettable experience.

From boarding pass invitations to a world map seating chart, the possibilities are endless. You’ll not only tie the knot but also embark on the first adventure of your married life together.

Let’s explore some travel wedding theme ideas that’ll make your big day a journey to remember.

Incorporating Maps and Globes

maps and globes used as decor

Bringing maps and globes into your wedding decor is a creative way to highlight your adoration for travel. These elements not only serve a decorative purpose but also embody the journey you’re about to embark on together. You’ll find incorporating these items not only easy but incredibly impactful in setting the tone for your travel-themed wedding.

Start with your invitations. Imagine the anticipation your guests will feel when they receive an invite designed like an antique map, marking the beginning of their journey to your special day. This first impression sets the stage for what’s to come and immediately ties them into the theme.

At the venue, globes and maps can transform the space into a traveler’s paradise. Consider using vintage globes as centerpieces on your guest tables.

Pair them with travel books stacked high and postcards from places you’ve visited or dream of visiting as table markers. This not only serves as a conversation starter among your guests but also personalizes your celebration with stories of your adventures.

For a more interactive experience, design a world map seating chart. Guests can find their names tagged to specific destinations, indicating their table assignments. Such an engaging setup can become a memorable part of their experience, making them feel like an integral part of your ongoing journey.

Important: Always look for maps and globes that reflect your style as a couple. Whether you prefer a vintage look or something more modern, these elements should resonate with your personal taste and the spirit of adventure that defines your relationship.

Through these thoughtful touches, you’ll not only celebrate your love for each other but also your shared passion for exploration. Each map and globe placed with intention throughout your wedding is a nod to the adventures that lie ahead, promising a life of continued discovery and excitement.

Destination-Inspired Decor

travel wedding theme ideas for location-inspired decor

Transforming your wedding venue into a reflection of your favorite destinations doesn’t have to be daunting. With a few strategic pieces, you can evoke the essence of Parisian streets, Hawaiian beaches, or even the Sahara’s expanse. The key is in the details that bring a sense of place.

First, consider the color palette. Colors have the power to transport us , and each destination has its own unique palette. For a Moroccan theme, think rich jewel tones like emerald green and ruby red.

If you’re going for a Greek island vibe, opt for crisp whites and ocean blues. These colors can be incorporated into everything from your table linens to your floral arrangements.

Next, incorporate authentic elements that scream ‘destination.’ For a Parisian theme , elegant Eiffel Tower models as centerpieces or table numbers can add a touch of romance. Hawaiian themes might call for luau-inspired table settings, complete with palm leaves and tropical flowers.

If you’re aiming for an Indian-inspired wedding , consider adding small, intricate lanterns and vibrant, silk pillows as part of your seating decor.

Food and drink selections offer another opportunity to highlight your theme. Offer a tasting menu inspired by your chosen location’s cuisine. Italian weddings might feature a pasta bar, while a Caribbean theme could include a rum-tasting station.

It’s not just about the type of food, but also how it’s presented. Think of themed serving ware and decor that matches your overall theme.

Lastly, don’t forget about the power of music and entertainment to set the atmosphere. A flamenco dancer or a steel drum band can submerge your guests into the experience, creating memories that last a lifetime.

By focusing on these elements, your wedding decor will tell a story of travel and adventure, making your special day truly unforgettable.

Wanderlust Wedding Attire

travel-inspired wedding attire

When embracing a travel-themed wedding, your attire can be a bold statement of your wanderlust spirit. Choosing unique and theme-appropriate wedding attire is not just about looking good; it’s about telling your travel stories through what you wear.

For brides, consider a dress that reflects the elegance and allure of your favorite destination. A Grecian-style gown might be perfect if you’re enamored with the ancient beauty of Greece, while a dress with subtle floral patterns can echo the gardens of France. Don’t shy away from incorporating colors that remind you of a sunset in Africa or the Northern Lights.

Grooms have the opportunity to stand out with attire that complements the theme. A safari-inspired suit for an African adventure theme or a brightly colored tie that matches the bride’s dress can add a touch of whimsy and unity to your outfits.

Consider adding accessories like a vintage compass cufflink or a map-patterned pocket square to underline the travel theme.

Your wedding attire is not just about the dress or suit but also about the details and accessories . For a beach destination wedding, brides can opt for seashell jewelry and grooms can go for lightweight linen suits to keep the vibe casual yet elegant.

Footwear should also reflect your travel theme. Comfort is key, especially if your venue is outdoors or in a unique setting. Think about elegant sandals for a beach wedding or sturdy yet stylish boots for a mountain or adventure-themed wedding.

Remember, your wedding attire is a major part of the day’s theme. Letting your wanderlust guide your choices ensures that your love for travel shines through, making your special day unforgettable.

Passport-Inspired Invitations and Save the Dates

travel wedding theme ideas for stationery

When planning your travel-themed wedding, the invitations set the stage. Imagine the excitement of your guests as they receive passport-inspired invitations .

These unique invites not only announce your special day but also whisk your guests away on the adventure that awaits them. Each page can reveal more details about your wedding, mimicking the process of flipping through an actual passport.

Creating these invites involves focusing on authentic touches, such as a cover that resembles a real passport’s texture and color. Inside, you can include stamps or visas that represent significant milestones in your relationship, like the first trip you took together or the place where the proposal happened.

For a more personalized touch, incorporate your engagement photos as if they were passport photos.

When it comes to save the dates, consider sending out boarding pass-themed cards. These can be designed to look like real boarding passes, offering your guests a sneak peek of the journey they’re about to embark on with you.

You can include details like the departure date (your wedding date), boarding time (the time your ceremony starts), and the destination in a way that playfully mirrors an actual boarding pass.

To further enhance the theme, consider using postal stamps from the country or city where you plan to wed on the envelopes. This adds an element of authenticity and excitement, making your guests feel like they’re truly about to set off on an international adventure.

Remember, these first impressions of your wedding theme are crucial. They’re your chance to captivate and intrigue your guests, setting the tone for a memorable experience that extends beyond the conventional wedding ceremony and into the realm of adventure and exploration.

Travel-Themed Guest Book

unique travel-themed guest book ideas

Capturing memories in a unique way becomes a breeze with a travel-themed guest book at your wedding. Instead of settling for a traditional guest book, think outside the box. Invite your guests to leave their mark on something that reflects your wanderlust spirit and your shared adventures.

Consider using a vintage globe where guests can sign their names along with a short message or wish. This not only creates a memorable keepsake but also serves as a striking piece of decor in your home.

Alternatively, a custom-made book with map pages offers a personalized touch, allowing guests to pinpoint places they suggest you visit or share special travel memories of their own.

For a truly interactive experience, set up a postcard station. Provide postcards from various destinations around the world or places that hold special meaning to you.

Guests can select a postcard, write a message, and drop it into a customized mailbox. This idea not only captures the essence of travel but also provides you with surprises to read post-wedding.

Implementing a travel-themed guest book is about creating an engaging experience for your guests and weaving together a tapestry of well-wishes that encapsulate the spirit of adventure. Consider these options:

  • Vintage globe : A chic and interactive way for guests to share their messages.
  • Map pages book : Offers a bespoke element and a nod to specific locations meaningful to you.
  • Postcard station : A dynamic and visually captivating option that brings a piece of the world into your wedding.

Whichever option you choose, ensure it aligns with your overall wedding theme and decor. This not only enhances the aesthetic but also makes the guest book an integral part of your special day.

Your travel-themed guest book will become a treasured memento, full of heartfelt messages and reminders of the loved ones who celebrated your journey’s beginning.

Final Thoughts

Your wedding is a reflection of your journey together, and a travel-themed celebration is a perfect way to showcase your love for adventure.

From the moment your guests receive their passport-inspired invitations, they’ll know they’re in for an unforgettable experience.

With every detail, from the map decorations and vintage globes to the cuisine that transports them to your favorite destination, you’re inviting them into your love story.

Remember, it’s the personal touches, like a globe guest book or postcard messages, that will make your day truly special. Let your wedding attire and decor reflect the essence of your travels, creating a day that’s not just about the places you’ve been, but also the adventures that lie ahead.

After all, your love story is a journey, and your wedding is just one beautiful stop along the way.

30 Dreamy Destination Wedding Ideas to Highlight Your Locale

Whether you’re tying the knot in a French château or on a Caribbean beach, these ideas will showcase your venue’s natural beauty.

While tying the knot at a local venue is always a meaningful experience, it's safe to say that there’s something particularly magical about jetting off to a faraway place for your wedding. No matter if you choose to say "I do" amid the rolling hills of Tuscany or walk down the aisle along the coastline of Fiji, a destination wedding locale provides jaw-dropping views that will make your vow exchange unforgettable. Beyond the idyllic scenery, though, traveling to a distant spot will provide you and your loved ones with the opportunity to immerse yourself in a different culture, all while trying out new and exhilarating experiences. Did we also mention that hosting a destination wedding is a great excuse to throw a weekend of events, filled with celebrations that extend beyond the ceremony and reception?

If we've sold you on the idea of hosting a getaway celebration—or if you're already planning one—here's one additional thing you should know about these special events: The setting will (and should!) play a large role in your décor . Between using an illustration of your French château as a recurring motif on your paper goods, booking a historic landmark venue for each phase of the festivities, or giving your guests welcome bags with local treats, there are so many ways to highlight your destination in a compelling and touching way. That's why we put together a list of 30 dreamy destination wedding ideas to make your far-flung nuptials even more memorable. Read on for more.

Establish a Sense of Place With Your Invitations

Photo by House on the Clouds ; Invitations and Paper Products by  Designed by the C

The primary function of your wedding invitation is to share details about the time and place of your nuptials—but the design of your stationery suite is also an excellent way to pay tribute to your locale. Paint an illustration of your venue on your envelope liners or place a sketch of the scenery at the top of your itinerary to set the scene and get your guests excited about their trip. You can even buy postage stamps that shed light on the area’s culture and landscape, just as this couple did for their Indian wedding by the sea on the Athens Riviera .

Include a Map in Your Stationery Suite

Photo by Jenny Quicksall ; Invitations and Paper Products by  Prim and Pixie

One particular destination-forward design element you’ll want to include in your invitation suite is a map of the region. If you’re hosting a weekend of events in multiple locations, a map highlighting the different areas will serve as a helpful and visually appealing guide for your guests. But that's not to say you can't include this detail if your celebration is taking place in one spot; a map of the various places within your venue is a fun way to set the tone for your faraway event.

Buy Out a Hotel

Many destination weddings are intimate affairs given the expenses and logistics that come with saying “I do” abroad. But if you happen to have a large enough guest list , consider buying out a hotel to accommodate your loved ones. Though this option can be costly, it will allow your friends and family to celebrate you in one place. Plus, you can host a number of events at the location without needing to book transportation to multiple venues.

Distribute Welcome Bags

Welcome bags aren’t a requirement, but they are a considerate gesture if you’re hosting a destination wedding with several days of festivities. Stock your bags with local snacks and drinks to give guests a taste of the region’s palate, plus items they’ll need during the weekend, such as sunscreen to protect their skin from strong UV rays at an outdoor affair or Advil to combat achy feet after dancing in the sand from dusk until dawn.

Host a Pre-Wedding Event With an Iconic Backdrop

Before the main event, most couples kick off their destination weddings with a welcome party or rehearsal dinner. When booking a venue for this pre-wedding party, consider scouting a location that spotlights an iconic landmark. Throwing your fête overlooking the Eiffel Tower in Paris or the Tower Bridge in London will lead to stunning photo ops.

Take a Hike

Since you and your guests will likely have a bit of downtime during your destination wedding, why not arrange a hike with your partner and any interested members of your crew to explore the natural landscape? This activity is best for nuptials taking place in a mountainous region , a national park, or in locales with nearby trails. Make sure your photographer comes along to capture the remarkable sites on camera, as well.

Explore the Region on Horseback

Another equally scenic alternative to a hike is taking in your surroundings by horseback—especially if you’re trading vows on a farm or ranch. Though getting your guests involved in this activity might be more of a tricky feat logistically, trotting across the region with your partner will make for a memorable and intimate experience before you become newlyweds.

Create a Scenic First Look

First looks are already highly emotional, but to make the experience even more sentimental, position this moment against a striking backdrop. Find a spot that reflects the visual appeal of your venue, such as along the coast, on top of a mountain, or in the middle of a vineyard. A picturesque location will also lead to eye-catching photos that you’ll want to preserve forever.

Capture the Landscape on Camera During Portraits

If you plan on snapping photos before the ceremony, work with your photographer to map out some of the most breathtaking locations at your venue, whether it’s on the beach or on top of a cliff. Not only will you and your partner get cinematic shots of your destination, but you'll both be able to spend one-on-one time together while basking in the beauty of your surroundings.

Choose a Local Place of Worship for Your Ceremony

Churches , synagogues, and mosques around the world boast some of the most ornate architecture that is embedded with history. If you’re arranging a religious wedding ceremony, consider exchanging vows at a place of worship that aligns with your beliefs. The best part? Since the setting itself will be the focal point, you’ll need minimal decorations to make the space come to life.

Exchange Vows at a Historical Landmark

Another choice for your ceremony setting? Saying “I do” at an ancient landmark. An old-world amphitheater, a 17th-century palace, or a historic museum are some of the many options that will make your vow exchange even dreamier. Your guests will get a history lesson while celebrating this new chapter in your relationship.

Spotlight the Views During Your Service

Instead of reciting your promises in a physical building, consider the great outdoors. If your destination has astounding views, in particular, make sure to host your service in a location that highlights the awe-inspiring scenery. Bonus points if the spot has panoramic views, so you and your significant other can marvel at the backdrop, too.

Hire Local Vendors

To help your vision come to life in a seamless way, hire local vendors. Professionals who live in the area will know the ins and outs of your chosen locale, which will alleviate a lot of stress and guesswork that naturally comes from orchestrating your big day abroad. Ask your venue for referrals, and then vet the experts by reading online reviews and setting up virtual meetings.

Drive a Getaway Car Through Town

Photo by Gianni Di Natale Photographers

Hopping in a getaway car with your partner after you’ve been pronounced newlyweds is one of the best ways to ring in your new marriage and soak up the destination’s sprawling landscape. Whether it’s a vintage convertible or a local trolley, driving around the region will create a special and intimate moment that you’ll look back on fondly. Have your photographer ride in another vehicle beside you to get striking shots of the two of you posing against the gorgeous backdrop.

Book a Boat Ride for Your Mode of Transportation

If your reception is taking place at a waterfront location, consider making your grand entrance by boat, like this couple did at their tropical bash in Barbados . You can even use the ride as an opportunity to schedule a photo shoot with your partner, especially if you decide not to do a first look earlier in the day. If anything, the two of you will get some much-needed alone time.

Welcome Guests With the Native Liquor

The food and drinks you serve at your destination wedding are a tangible way for everyone to experience a new culture. One fun and celebratory idea is pouring local liquor in shot glasses for your friends and family to throw back when looking for their seating assignments. At their elegant affair in Cabo , this couple chose the region’s native tequila topped with a lime wedge for their escort cards.

Complete Your Escort Card Wall With an Illuminating Illustration

For those who want to go the more traditional route with paper escort cards arranged on a sign , you can still reference your destination through the display. For example, if you’re tying the knot in San Francisco, showcase an illustration of the Golden Gate Bridge as the base of your signage. Then, adorn slips of paper with drawings of other attractions that are unique to the locale. The artistic setup will grab your guests’ attention and signify the spot’s importance to your relationship.

Assemble Your Lounge Area Overlooking the Scenery

Adding a lounge area to your floor plan not only offers your guests a reprieve from an action-packed dance floor, but it also provides you with an opportunity to flaunt the views of your destination. Consider situating the seating arrangement outside, along the perimeter of your floor plan, so it faces the natural landscape. Then, use materials that coordinate with the terrain, such as rattan chairs and beige throw pillows.

Show Off Exquisite Architecture

From Morocco to Antigua, there are so many locations around the world that house some of the most beautiful and long-standing architecture. Hosting your ceremony in the ruins of an ancient church in Guatemala or celebrating your marital status in a Parisian hotel ballroom with ornate gold details will create the most lavish and interesting canvas for your party. The interior and exterior of a destination’s buildings are also some of the best expressions of a place’s identity and culture.

Look to Your Location to Inspire Your Aesthetic

Your locale will probably be one of the main focuses of attention on your big day if you’re planning a destination wedding, so it only makes sense to let the site influence your aesthetic. For instance, since lemons are a native plant grown locally in certain parts of Italy, throwing a lemon-themed reception is a fitting choice for nuptials in Sicily. By adorning your space with lemons and other local foliage, you’ll complement and pay homage to the destination.

Take Cues From the Natural Setting

You can also seek inspiration for your aesthetic from the landscape itself. If your post-ceremony gathering is taking place in a forest or on a ranch, consider a Western-themed event , decorated with sunflowers, checkered linens, and wooden accents. Another example is a tropical soirée embellished with monstera leaves, hibiscus, and coconut shells if your function is happening on a beach.

Feature Locally-Grown Flowers

Photo by Heather Waraksa ; Floral Design by  Congrega Bahia Eventos

For most weddings—destination weddings included—flowers tend to be one of the main decorative elements that couples call upon. To paint an accurate depiction of your locale and to successfully animate the space, trim your site with local blooms. Using native plants will coordinate with the natural environment and save money because you’ll cut costs on transportation fees that are included in the total cost of imported buds. This couple engulfed their Brazilian bash in hot pink bougainvillea , which is native to the South American country.

Decorate Your Tabletops With Customary Items

There’s so much detail that goes into your tablescape, from the centerpieces to the glassware . While you can rent many of these items for the night, curating pieces from the actual region will create a more meaningful and culturally-rich display. If you’re celebrating your nuptials in Morocco, for example, decorate your tables with spices, candles, and ceramics that you found at Marrakech markets.

Nod to Your Locale Through Your Place Settings

You can also use illustrations of the destination to accentuate your tablescapes and create a more cohesive event. If your reception is occurring indoors but you still want to showcase the epic views from outside, consider working the scenery into your place settings through a detailed drawing. This couple had an image of Lake Como painted on their menus at their colorful garden wedding in the Northern Italian region .

Serve Regional Specialties

Since food plays a big role in shaping a place’s culture, think about serving up local dishes after you tie the knot. To go all out, create a menu with starters, sides, and entrées that you would find in a nearby restaurant. You can always offer a few regional hors d’oeuvres at cocktail hour if you don’t want to commit to a full spread dedicated to the region.

Round Off Your Palate With Something Sweet

Since your guests will probably be looking for a sugar fix to finish off their savory meal, consider creating a display of local desserts . Pastries, such as macarons, eclairs, and madeleines, are perfect for French nuptials, while slices of a traditional millefoglie cake will introduce guests to Italian customs. You can even purchase these treats from a neighborhood bakery.

Conclude the Night With Apt Entertainment

Dancing will probably be the main activity at your wedding, but if you’re looking to supplement your dance floor with another form of entertainment, the options are endless. Think about ideas that will provide more insight into your destination. Fireworks overlooking the ocean in Cancun will give you and your guests another opportunity to admire the views, which is how this couple ended their elegant affair in Mexico . You can also hire a live painter to document the destination with a paintbrush or set up a wine tasting, where friends and family sip on local beverages.

Throw a Pool Party

At destination nuptials, couples often organize farewell parties on the last day of their wedding weekend for one more chance to gather with their group. If you’re getting hitched in a warm climate, why not host a pool party on the day after your vow exchange? Offer brunch with local dishes and drinks and provide plenty of floaties, so friends and family can kick back and relax before heading home.

Enjoy a Beach Day

If your venue doesn’t have access to a pool but it’s located along the coast, you can also throw your farewell party on the beach. Stock your event with towels, umbrellas, and plenty of snacks, so everyone feels comfortable. If organizing another function for your entire group of guests seems like too much of a headache, you can even enjoy a beach day with just your spouse after the festivities are over.

Gift Guests a Memento of Their Visit

To ensure that your destination wedding will live on, give your friends and family a keepsake that reminds them of the location. Bottles of homemade limoncello are perfect wedding favors for Italian nuptials. Whenever your loved ones decide to sip on these beverages at home, they’ll recall all of the heartwarming moments from your celebration—and the idyllic locale.

Ideas for Planning a Travel-Themed Wedding

If you love seeing the world as much as we do, you might be thinking about how to plan a travel-themed wedding. We love how our travel-themed décor turned out and hope that we can inspire your planning process!

travel themed wedding idea

“I love that you want to see the world with me.”

Yep, that was actually a line from my wedding vows to WC! We are definitely serious about our love for each other and our love for traveling. We knew from the start of planning that we wanted to incorporate a travel theme! Since our family and friends know traveling is a huge part of our relationship, we thought it would be unique to have little travel touches in the wedding details.

I had so many ideas but with a tight budget, I had to narrow it down! Pinterest is amazing for inspiration and many of my below suggestions started with a photo I found there. I’m so excited to share with you all of our ideas for how to plan a travel-themed wedding!

Destinations Instead of Table Numbers

travel themed wedding idea

Instead of numbering our tables, I took photos from places we’d visited and labeled each table as a city or country. I made these with Microsoft Word (it’s what I had) but you could use Photoshop or another editing software. We had table “numbers” for places including Ireland , Iceland, Alaska, San Diego, and more!

Luggage Tags as Placecards

travel themed wedding idea

This was probably my favorite part of the travel-themed wedding! We decided that instead of placecards, each guest would receive a luggage tag with their table “destination.” I made the labels on Microsoft Word and cut them so that they easily slid into the luggage tag. You have to wait until almost the last minute to do this (as with any wedding placecards) because guest counts can change.

Where in the World Are You Sitting?

travel themed wedding idea

WC and I built this “where in the world are you sitting” board to hold the luggage tags and loved how it turned out! It also was fun to have a wedding project that we could work on together. I sent him to Lowes with my order (48” by 72” piece of plywood, ¾” thick) and his friend’s truck. He stained the board while I worked on creating a stencil for the wording. I had to do two coats of the white paint to get the wording to stand out, but it turned out perfect. After that, WC did a little math for me so I could figure out how far apart I needed to place the nails. I just love how the finished product turned out and we got so many compliments on the unique idea! Thank you to this website I found on Pinterest post for the inspiration!

Favors with a Travel Theme

To finish off our travel theme, we decided we wanted two other favors to go with the luggage tags. I did a google search for travel themed favors and there were so many ideas to choose from! Ultimately, I liked these airplane bottle openers the best– they are classy and useful!

WC also has a massive collection of can coolers and so, naturally, he wanted some for our wedding. I decided to order them as a favor for the rehearsal dinner. However, we had enough extras that we put a basket at the bar on wedding day. I ordered mine from the 42 North Designs Etsy shop and the shop owner was great.

Need Honeymoon Inspiration?

Now that you have a lot of ideas on how to plan a travel-themed wedding, you may be thinking about the next best part of a wedding: the honeymoon! We took a three-part honeymoon that included London sightseeing , relaxing at an overwater bungalow in the Maldives, and going on a leopard safari in Sri Lanka .

Making this happen meant we decided we didn’t want the typical wedding registry. Instead, we opted for a honeymoon registry with Zola ! Our family and friends contributed to our honeymoon experience, rather than buying typical gifts for our wedding. This was PERFECT for us as we prefer experiences over things anyway!

Check out our post on how to afford your dream honeymoon for more tips and inspiration!

With a honeymoon registry, you can start a cash fund that allows your guests to contribute to whatever experiences you set up on the site. For example, our funds included Snorkeling Trip in the Maldives, Couples Massage & Spa Treatments, Tower of London Tour, and more!

Another great thing about Zola is that you can earn extra credit by referring friends! If you invite someone to register, you’ll both get $50 credit once they sign up and start receiving gifts with their registry. Use our referral link to get started now!

Travel-Themed Wedding Ideas for an Extra Special Day

May 17, 2018 By Jen Ambrose and Ryan Victor 10 Comments

If you’re planning a travel-themed wedding, you’ll want the right invitations, decor, and favors. Fortunately, there are tons of travel-themed wedding accessories out there, and this list has everything you need. It all comes from individual artists or fair trade organizations, and many of the items will help you have a more eco-conscious wedding, too.

What’s the perfect way for two avid travelers to get married? In a travel-themed wedding full of map décor , passport-inspired accessories, and handmade goods from around the world, of course!

Well, that’s actually not how we got married two years ago. For many reasons, we decided against having a traditional wedding and instead got married in a private ceremony at a B&B in the Green Mountains of Vermont . It was just us, a justice of the peace, a photographer, and the B&B owners, in one of our favorite places in the world.

While our ceremony was perfect for us, we know most people prefer to have a wedding with friends and family, and we certainly love attending them. But if we’d gone the more traditional route, we would definitely have had a travel-themed wedding.

And we did have plenty of travel-themed décor at the low-key reception we held in our Montana hometown   the following week, although we tried to keep it as low-waste as possible (especially after learning that the average wedding creates 500 lbs. of trash and 66 tons of C02!).

So, to help other adventure-loving couples plan their own travel-themed weddings, we put together some of our favorite wedding and shower décor and other accessories.

Everything on this list is from two of our favorite places to shop: Etsy , where you can buy straight from individual artists and get customized, one-of-a-kind products; and Ten Thousand Villages , a non-profit fair trade organization where everything is handmade by disadvantaged artisans from around the world. Many of these items are also eco-friendly or help reduce the amount of waste   created, and several will also serve a purpose long after your big day.

Of course, you definitely don’t want all  of these clashing items at your wedding – but pick and choose the ones that mesh with your colors and venue, or just use them for inspiration as you plan your big day.

On the Road Save the Date Card by Factory Made (Ohio)

Almost two years after our wedding, we’d say marriage is kind of like a road trip – there are long days and unexpected detours, and sometimes you get lost (and sometimes the husband refuses to ask for directions).

What better way to let your friends and family know when your adventure together will start than with a road trip-themed save the date? These are postcards, so they don’t need to be mailed in an envelope – less waste! Available as physical cards, or as a digital file if you’d rather print it yourself.

Boarding Pass Wedding Invitations by Paper Willow Designs (United Kingdom)

Use these boarding pass invites to continue the travel theme when you send your invitations. They can be customized with details about your wedding, gift registry, and other important information, and the stub even functions as an RSVP card.

Passport-Style Wedding Itinerary by I Do With You (Ontario)

If you’re planning a destination wedding, or just have a lot of out-of-town guests, use a passport-style itinerary to provide all the information they need. From details about the ceremony and reception to tips on accommodations and transportation to suggested excursions, you can customize these itineraries to cover everything.

Honeymoon Fund Request Card by Violin Events (Bulgaria)

Traditionalists might write it off as tacky, but honeymoon funds are getting more and more popular. After all, avid travelers don’t usually want another set of towels or a new kitchen gadget – they’d rather be able to go on their dream honeymoon, and that means they need to pay for things like plane tickets and hotel rooms . These invitation inserts are a fun way to ask for a non-traditional gift. This is a digital download, so you’ll have to get it printed yourself.

Map Picture Frame by Brule River Roots (Wisconsin)

Planning to decorate the space with photos? There’s no better frame for a travel-themed wedding than one made from antique maps. Since these frames are custom-made, you can even choose the location shown on the map.

Map Photo Frame

Map Garland by Décor and Crafts (Ontario)

This garland makes a great, easy decoration for travel-lovers, and it’s hand-sewn, so every strand is unique. Plus, if you need it, it’ll double as décor for a travel-themed nursery!

Map Garland

Street Map Stickers by Wonderful Labels (California)

Really, most travel lovers can’t get enough map décor. These custom stickers can be used on anything from candleholders to water bottles, and they’re perfect for making personalized travel-themed bridal shower or bachelorette party swag.

Street Map Stickers

Kisii Heart or  Tree Dish by Smolart Self Help Group (Kenya)

These soapstone bowls are handmade in Kenya, and they’re an elegant way to display small trinkets or serve mints or candies at your wedding or shower. And they’ll work just as well as a candy dish or key bowl long afterward.

Kisii Tree Dish

Antique Map Welcome Sign by Mint and Merlot Paper Co. (California)

You knew there’d be more map décor, right? Welcome guests to your wedding with this personalized antique map sign. This is a digital template, so you’ll need to customize it (it’s super easy) and get it printed yourself.

Antique Map Welcome Sign

Visa Stamp-Style Program and Fan by Fossil Letterpress (Ontario)

If you’re having an outdoor wedding in a warm climate, your guests will appreciate these paper fans, which also serve as travel-themed wedding programs. The artist who makes them even creates custom graphics, or you can have them made with your monograms or other designs you already have.

Rustic Suitcase Ring Box by For Love Atelier (Poland)

Get your ring bearer in on the travel theme with this cute little suitcase ring box. It has the wedding date painted on the outside and can be ordered in any color. Plus, it’ll make the perfect jewelry box after the wedding.

Rustic Suitcase Ring Box

Vintage Postcard Ring Bearer Pillow by Larkspur and Linen (Michigan)

If you’d rather go with a ring pillow, this one is modeled after a vintage postcard, complete with a one-cent stamp. It’s a classic look for a traveler’s wedding.

Vintage Postcard Ring Bearer Pillow

Midnight Light Tapered Candles by Silence (India)

If your wedding will include a unity candle ceremony , why not use candles with meaning? These are handmade in India by members of a group called Silence, which helps deaf and disabled artisans earn a living. Buy a few extras to burn on your anniversary or any other time you want to remember your wedding.

Midnight Light Tapered Candles

Phoenician Blue Candle Holder by Hebron Glass (West Bank)

If you’re doing the unity candle ceremony, you’ll also need some candleholders. These are hand blown at Hebron Glass, a traditional glassware factory that’s been operating in the West Bank since 1890. Since they’re made from recycled bottles, each one is unique, and they’ll look just as good on your mantle or dining table after the wedding.

Phoenician Blue Candle Holder

Silk Flower Petals with Map Print by Burlap and Bling Studio (Florida)

These look like regular flower petals from a distance, but they’re made from cloth, and the antique map print adds some extra flair. Each pack contains a hundred petals, and they work equally well as a table decoration or for sprinkling in the aisle.

Silk Flower Petals with Map Print

World Map Cake Topper by Up Mood Shop (Ukraine)

There are a lot of travel-themed cake toppers out there, but this birch wood one is an elegant choice. And since it doesn’t include the last name, it works great if the woman is keeping her name!

World Map Cake Topper

Map Cupcake Wrap by Dill Pickle Picnic (Georgia)

We actually had cake pops at our reception, but we also love the idea of cupcakes for casual travel-themed weddings. Standard wedding cakes can get insanely expensive, and cupcakes are much easier to serve and eat. These cupcake wrappers are made from U.S. road maps that are too old to be sold and would otherwise have no use, and each one is unique. Just remember not to put them in the oven (slip the cupcakes into them once they’re baked)!

Vintage Postcard Cupcake Pins by Sweet Clicks (Florida)

If you’re serving cupcakes and want to jazz them up even more, top them with these vintage travel poster pins. There are about thirty different designs, featuring destinations from Banff to Cuba.

Vintage Postcard Cupcake Pins

Customized Paper Napkins by Charleston Charms (South Carolina)

Customize your napkins with an adventure-inspired stamp featuring your names. These are technically listed as “baby shower napkins,” but marriage is an adventure in its own right, no?

Customized Paper Napkins

Wooden World Map Guestbook by Wood Present Studio (Ukraine)

If you’re planning to have a guestbook, this one is the perfect choice for a travel-themed wedding. The cover is made from birch wood, and the world map image is laser-cut.

UP! Guestbook Alternative by Guest Books by Victoria (Ukraine)

As an alternative to the traditional guestbook, this board is inspired by the sweetest adventure-themed love story out there – the movie UP! You can customize the colors, and it comes in different sizes depending on the number of guests you’re expecting. To top if off, it’ll be a perfect piece of décor in your home long after the wedding.

UP! Guestbook Alternative

Decorative Globe by Live Fearlessly Free (North Carolina)

No travel-themed wedding would be complete without a globe, which makes a great decoration for your guestbook table. This one is hand-lettered, and you can choose from several adventure-related quotes. Plus, it’ll look just as good on your mantle after the big day.

Guest Book Globe

Zig-Zag Bowl by Noah’s Ark International Exports (India)

Need a convenient place to collect cards from your guests? This wire bowl will work perfectly – and it’ll make an excellent fruit bowl later on. It’s handmade by metalworkers in Moradabad, India, nicknamed “The Brass City” for its longstanding tradition of brasswork.

USA Map Seating Chart by Fortu Designs (California)

This is the ideal seating chart if you’ve got guests coming from different parts of the country and want to seat them together. Or, you can theme the tables after places that are important to you and seat whoever you want at each one. Either way, finding assigned seats at a wedding can be a hassle, and this will make it more fun. This is a digital download, so you’ll have to get it printed yourself.

Luggage Tag Seating Cards by Imbue You I Do (Pennsylvania)

Show your guests which spot is theirs with these luggage tag-inspired seating cards. You can have them printed with each guest’s name, as well as the name or number of the table they’re seated at.

Personalized Burlap Table Runner by Custom Holly Davidson (Connecticut)

Silver Forest Candle Holder by Noah’s Ark International Exports (India)

If you’re looking for a bar decoration or head table centerpiece with some global flair, this elegant candleholder might be the answer. It’s made from mango tree wood and silver leaf, and handcrafted by local artisans in India . Plus, it’ll look just as good on your mantle or dining table after the wedding.

If there’s one thing all weddings need, it’s something to toast with. These silver-plated brass goblets have an incredibly intricate design and come in a satin-lined box. They’re too pricey for every guest to have one, but they’ll make great toasting glasses for the couple – and they’re perfect for using on your anniversary for years to come.

Embossed Silver-Plated Goblets

Wine Bottle Toppers by OTIC (Kenya)

We actually received these as a wedding gift from one of Jen’s friends, so we can vouch that they’re adorable! They’re hand-carved in Kenya from blue gum eucalyptus tree, an invasive species in the area, and come in both giraffe and zebra designs. They’ll be useful for covering the partial bottles you’ll be left with after your shower or wedding – and they’ll make a great reminder of your nuptials any time you need to seal a bottle of Pinot.

Bottle Toppers

Wedding Favor Candy Bag by Clementine Wedding (Washington)

These little muslin bags are perfect for passing out your travel-themed wedding favors (or just some mints). They’re a great alternative to disposable plastic bags, and guests can take them home to use for packing or storing small items.

Wedding Favor Candy Bag

Airplane Confetti by Bits and Pieces Shoppe (Tennessee)

You shouldn’t toss rice at a travel-themed wedding – you should throw planes! These one-inch planes have been hand punched from paper maps, and each pack has a hundred. They’re the perfect way for guests to send you off on your honeymoon.

Airplane Confetti

Deep Purpose Bracelet by TARA Projects (India)

This bracelet is handmade in India from brass and labradorite. If your bridesmaids are the free-spirited type, this stone is said to increase philosophical thinking and spiritual awareness – and even if they’re not, it still makes a beautiful bridesmaids gift.

Want a bridesmaids gift that says you’ll be friends forever? This silver infinity bracelet is an elegant choice, and it’s made by metalworkers in Bali, Indonesia.

Hi there! Thanks for including my cupcake wraps… fun story behind the maps used. I create them using prior year’s road atlases that are too old to be sold. We work to purchase them at a discount from local insurance agencies and save them from being simply written off and trashed. It’s always my hope they end up in a recycle bin at the end of each “big day”!

LOOOVE all these ideas, especially the suitcase ringbox! Oh my gosh I’m drooling hahaha. I love how you did your actual wedding too btw – I do feel like the giant, grand ceremonies with 100+ people are a bit much and I think the way you did it is way more special. But to each their own 🙂

Thanks, Christina! There’s SO much cute travel-related wedding stuff on Etsy, it’s way too easy to go down the rabbit hole looking at all of it. 😉

All sorts of travel-related items, such as cameras, globes, and compasses, are perfectly fine for the toppers . You may finish off the cake by decorating it with stars or anything else that resembles the shapes of the towns and countries you love. Enjoy yourself, and remember to save your favorite images to Pinterest boards.

A delicious wedding cake with a travel theme and adorable toppers in the shape of a couple who enjoys traveling together.

How To Travel With a Wedding Cake?

The cake should be refrigerated for at least a few hours before the trip , and you should also turn on the air conditioning for ten to fifteen minutes before you leave so that the car is chilly enough for the cake. To avoid melting, keep it out of direct sunlight and under a sun shield if possible.

A cake box is a must if you're going to travel with a cake . Sizes, strengths, and prices all vary, but they're really reasonable overall. They're strong enough to hold a wedding cake and cost less than two dollars. Just tape the box together, then use a knife to create a flap in one end to slide the cake in, and finally tape up the other end.

Consider utilizing insulated transportation/cool boxes and placing frozen packs around the sides of your cake box if you need to carry your cake on a very hot summer day or across a long distance.

How to Travel With a 3-tier Cake?

You can travel with a cake that has 3 tiers. It is possible to transport the separate tiers in boxes on a flat surface (like the new flooring) without the risk of breaking anything . You also have the option of transporting the two lower tiers already stacked, but the remaining tiers will need to be disassembled and stacked at the destination.

Cake stands should not be used to transport a cake. If the cake is larger than the usual cake boxes, you may need to construct your own box. You may also utilize the larger boxes sold at stores like Lowe's and Walmart. Easily slip your cake inside the box by cutting a line down the longest, highest side and taping up the ends.

Can You Bring Cakes on a Plane Trip?

The short answer is “ yes ,” and that applies both to local and international flights within the United States. On international flights coming into and leaving the USA, you can also fly with them.

There is no need to worry about bringing a cake through airport security because the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) permits cake to be brought through both carry-on and checked baggage. A cake from the market or one baked at home is both acceptable. If the cake is not already packaged, you should either wrap it in plastic or place it in a container with a tight-fitting lid.

29 Destination Wedding Favors Inspired by Travel

These unique and thematic gift ideas will help guests remember your celebration's location.

travel themed wedding idea

Destination weddings are like mini vacations for traveling guests—and don't the best vacations involve souvenirs? When it comes to faraway celebrations, guests probably have to put in extra work to attend. In turn, they deserve a reward for their troubles. Thematic, standout thank-you gifts are a great way to show your gratitude. If you're in the market for ideas, we've got the gallery for you. Whether you're marrying out-of-state, out-of-country, or out-of-continent, these destination wedding favor ideas are here to inspire.

For truly memorable favors, choose items that are related to your wedding's location, whether they were made there , represent the destination's culture or scenery, or help celebrants enjoy the locale while in town. That might mean handcrafted Mexican blankets, potted cacti for a desert wedding, or sunglasses for a beachside event —all of which are on the slides ahead. Alternatively, you can opt for goods that are related to travel more broadly. These blue luggage tags are the perfect example. The bride and groom packaged them in muslin bags tied with Froufrou Chic ribbon for their Bali event by the sea.

For more unique and useful ideas, click through the rest of our slideshow. We're here to show you exactly how to nod to your location with your goodbye ( or welcome! ) gifts. Whether you're city-hopping stateside to tie the knot or bringing your nuptials abroad, you can't go wrong with destination-themed wedding favors like these. They're bound to be the best vacation memorabilia your attendees have ever taken home.
